Forthe firsttimeinfouryears,the NewmanFootballTeamtakesahugewin overtheSt.CharlesCatholicComets!On Friday,September6,theGreeniesplayed St.CharlesCatholicathome.Thisfootball gameremainsveryimportantasSt. CharlesCatholicarerivalsofNewman, andthetwoteamswerereadyto fightfor thewin.ThispastFriday,despitethepoor weatherconditionsandchanceof cancelation,theGreeniescameoutready toplayandfoughthard.Thestudent section,dressedinthethemeofRockN’ Roll,waspackedaswellasalargesection ofNewmanparentsalltheretosupport ourGreenies.Thegamebeganand Newmanwasoff toagreatstartasCollier Villerescoredanimpressivetouchdown followedbyanotherfromCharlesWilson. Despitetheconstantrainthroughoutthe game,theGreenieskept fightingand securedahugeleadbytheendofthe fourthquarter.The finalscorebeing 24-10,securingahugevictoryfor Newman!OveralltheGreeniesfootball teamisoff toagreatstartoftheseason!

Earlierthisyear,JiyaJolly(’27)was selectedfortheUSADebateTeam, whichrepresentstheUnitedStatesat internationaldebateeventsinWorld SchoolsDebate.Twelvestudentsfrom aroundthecountrywereselectedforthe team,andonlytwoweresophomores. Thiscomesa erJiyawasrankedthe7th speakerinWorldSchoolsDebateinthe countryattheNationalSpeechand DebateTournamentlastJuneinDes Moines,Iowa(whereshecompetedon TeamLouisiana)andwasa quarterfinalistonTeamNewmanatthe UniversityofKentuckyTournamentof Championslastspring.Abouttwoweeks later,Newman’sWorldSchoolsDebate CaptainAmarWalia(’25)wasselected
fortheUSADebateDevelopment Team,whichisdesignedtofacilitate thedevelopmentofdebatersaround thecountryforinternational competitionsatthehighestlevelin WorldSchoolsDebate.Amarhas competedonTeamLouisianaatthe NationalSpeechandDebate Tournamentforthepasttwoyears andwasalsoaquarterfinalistonTeam NewmanattheUniversityof KentuckyTournamentofChampions lastspring.Thisisthe firsttimein schoolhistorythatastudenthasbeen selectedforeitherTeamUSAorthe DevelopmentTeam,soplease congratulatebothstudentsonthis honor!

Recently,theWickedMoviedroppedintheatersonNovember 22nd!Themoviereceivedgreatreviewsfrommusicaltheater fanaticsandnewviewersalike.Themainstarsincluded CynthiaErivo,whoplayedtheiconicroleofElphaba,and ArianaGrande,whoplayedGlinda.Bothstarsbroughttheir ownexperiencesanduniqueskillstoworldrenownroles, receivingalotofpraisefortheirperformances.Directedby JonM.Chu,the filmadaptationofWickedbringsthemagical worldofOztolifewithpracticaleffectsandalluringvisuals,a wonderfultakeontheBroadwayclassic.
Thisiterationofthemisunderstood“WickedWitchofthe West”allowsviewerstounderstandwhatleduptotheopening scenesoftheoriginal WizardofOz.CynthiaErivo’s performanceisbothpowerfulandcaptivating,demonstrating thecomplexityaroundElphaba’sinnerturmoil.Similarly, ArianaGrandecapturesthecharmandlightheartednessof GlindatheGoodwithvocalsthatimmediatelyimmersethe audience.Thisduoprovedtobedynamiconandoff thescreen andtheirchemistryisstrong,evidentintheirinterviews.
Nottobeoverlooked,thesupportingcastconsistsofMichele YeohasMadameMorrible,Jeff GoldblumastheWizard, JonathanBaileyasFiyero,EthanSlaterasBoq,andMarissa BodeasNessarose.Eachofthesestarsportrayedthecharacters tothefullestonthescreenfrom“DancingThroughLife”to“A SentimentalMan,”furtherdevelopingtherichnessofthe film.
Despitethepressurefromfanstocreateawonderful film adaptationofthebelovedmusical,themoviesuccessfullystays truetotheoriginal,whileincorporatingnewcinematicideas. AsCynthiaErivo’srenditionoftheiconicendingriff of “DefyingGravity”echoesthroughthetheater,itistrulya spectacle.ThissolidifiesWicked’sunderlyingthemesof resilienceandquiteliterallydefyingexpectations.Through thiswonderfulstarstuddedcastandadaptation,weare remindedthat,likeElphaba,wecanallriseupanddefywhat triestoholdusdown.

Afternearly5yearsandmanydeadlinepushbacks,theRampart St.ClaudeStreetcarLinefinallyreopenedonMay19,2024. ByEdwinSalisbury’25

Itwasahot,sunnymorningonMay19th,2024.Iboardedthe St.CharlesStreetcarlineandsatdownonmywaytoutilize thenewlineinordertovisitalocalarcadeintheBywater.It wasmostlyuneventful,apartfromseeingthemostpolite motorcyclistsallparticipatinginamotorcade.WhenIgotto CanalStreet,Ihoppedoff theoldgreenstreetcarandwalked upCanalStreettowardstheRampartstop.Iwaitedwith anticipation,anda eronlyabout10minutes,aredstreetcar bearingtherollsignELYSIANFIELDS||RAMPART/ST CLAUDE||46turnedoff ofLoyolaAvenueandontothestop oncanalstreet.Ipaidmyfareandhoppedonboard.We waitedfortheautomaticelectricswitchtoactivate,which wouldallowustocontinueontoRampart.However,when weturnedoff ofCanalStreetontoRampart,thetrolleypole dewired.However,theoperatorquicklyhoppedoutand rewiredit,andthenwewereonourway.The firstsitewe passedwasthesiteofthecollapsewhichkilledthreepeople, exposedseriousproblemswiththecity’sbuildinginspection program,damagedtheSaengerTheatre,andle acritical pieceofinfrastructureoutofservice.Wecontinueddown theline,anditimmediatelybecameclearpeoplewere excitedaboutthestreetcarline’sreopening.Isawpeoplein barswavefranticallyandonebartenderevencheered. Therewereevensignsonalotofthestopsproclaiming “RampartisBack!”.WhenIgotoff atElysianFields,Iheaded tothelocalarcade,butitturnsoutitwasclosedduetome notcheckingthewebsite.WhenIwentbacktotheElysian Fieldsstop,itwasclearthatpeoplehadn’tthoughttheline wouldbeopenbecausetherewasasecondlinethatblocked off halfoftheline.Thestreetcararrivedatthestop,andI sawseveralcostumedaccordionplayersexit.Wehadtowait awhileforthesecondlinetoclearbeforedeparting.Because thearcadewasclosedandIstillhadplentyoftime,Idecided toridethewholelinetotheUnionPassengerTerminal.The terminalhadavendingmachine,soIdecidedtotreatmyself toasoda.Ithenboardedastreetcarboundforthe Riverfrontandgotoff atCarondeletStreettoboardtheSt. Charlesline.Isafelymadeithome.

Thetouritselfhasalsomadesomemajor changessinceitkickedoff onMarch17, 2023inGlendale,Arizona.Onthe firstUS legofthetour,“The1”replaced“Invisible String”astheopeningsongofthe Folklore eraa eronly4shows,andSwi ieanthem “LongLive”wasaddedtothe SpeakNow eratocelebratethereleaseof SpeakNow (Taylor’sVersion).Temporarychangeswere madeduringsometourdateswhen openingactsPhoebeBridgersandHAIM joinedTaylortosing“NothingNew”(from Red)and“NoBody,NoCrime”(from Evermore),respectively.
However,thebiggestchangeswere madeduringtheEuropeanlegin May,a erthereleaseof TTPD.The orderoftheeraswascompletely changed,with Folklore and Evermore beingcombinedintooneeratosave time.
Additionally,manysongswerecut: “TheArcher”fromLover,“Long Live”from SpeakNow,“TisThe DamnSeason”andfanfavorite “TolerateIt”from Evermore,and “The1”and“TheLastGreat AmericanDynasty”from Folklore.Of course,thesesixsongswerecutto makespaceforanew TTPD erawith sevensongs.
AsalwayswithTaylor,therewere multipleconspiracytheoriesleading uptotheconcerts,mostofwhich revolvedaroundTaylorpossibly announcing Reputation(Taylor’s Version) ononeofthethreenights. Unfortunately,mostofthenights wereuneventfulintermsof surprises,exceptwhenshebrought outSabrinaCarpenter.

TheSeniorshadablastattheSenior Retreatthisyear!Wetraveledto Fairhope,AlabamatotheBeckwith RetreatCenterandspenttwonights there.TheRetreatCenterhas82acres oflandattachedtoalakewithmultiple piers;thefacilityalsoincludesasports area,challengecourses,apool,multiple cabins,andmeetingrooms.
WhenwearrivedatBeckwith,webegan ourretreatwithaCollegeCounseling sessionduetoapproachingdeadlines. Wewerethengivenourcabin assignmentsandbroughtourluggageto

OnOctober17th,theNewman A.C.T.I.O.N.S.VulnerableSubcommittee partneredwithTheBloodCenterto hostaverysuccessfulBloodDrive.In total,51pintsofbloodweredonated, meaning153livesweresaved!
favoritewasanactivitywiththreeplanks lying flatonthegroundandyour advisorystandingevenlyonthem.
Youthenhadtocompletemultiple challenges,whichincludedmoving planksandmovingalongthesameone. Theseactivitiesbroughtmanyadvisories closertogether,aswellasthegrade.
TheClassof2025wasalsoallowedtogo intothelake.Wewereabletochoose betweenkayaks,canoes,orpaddle boardsandhadaboutthreehoursto spendinthelake.Thereweresome
Whiletheminimumagefordonating bloodis16,thelowerschoolhadabig handintheblooddrive.Thelower schoolheldacompetitionwherethe classthatgotthemostamountof parentsorotheradultstodonatewould receiveanicecreamparty.However,the blooddriveendeduphavingsomany donationsthateverylowerschoolclass wonanicecreamparty!
Inadditiontosavinglives,donorsalso receivedsomefunrewards.TheBlood Centergaveoutshirtsandcouponsfor freeicecreamtoanyonewhodonated. Whiletheshirtsandicecreamarevery appreciated,thefanfavoriteprizewas definitelytheVIPPasstotheMortuary HauntedHouse.Thankyoutoeveryone whodonatedorwhoencouragedothers

We’veallseentheemailsaskingforextravolunteersforBreakthroughSummerAcademy.Buthaveyoueverwondered: “WhatactuallyisBreakthrough?”,“Whydoesitmatter?”,and,moreimportantly,“ShouldIdoit?”ManyNewmanstudents overtheyearshaveansweredpositivelytothatlastquestion,includingJuniorSaniyaJarrow’26,whovolunteeredatthe BreakthroughSummerAcademyin2024:

It’salwaysbeenanimportantpartofmylifebecauseIused todoitwhenIwasyounger.Ialsothinkit’sagreatwayto givebacktothecommunity,soIkindofwantedtoput thosetwothingstogetherandgivebacktothesekidswhat Breakthroughgavetome.
Whatisthedailyschedulelike?
Firstthinginthemorning,we’llsometimeshaveamorning meetingwithstudentsandfaculty.Theyhave announcementsbutthensometimesthere’sskits,whichare reallyfun.Thenwehave2or3classes,followedbycollege, whichisbasicallytheBreakthroughversionofadvisory. Next,there’s2moreclasses,andthenwehavelunch.A er lunch,wehaveBOSS,whichstandsforBlowOff Some Steam,andthatgivesthekidstimetoplay,relax,andjustbe themselves.Then,youhaveanelective,andthere’ssomany optionsforthose.Itaughtcrocheting,butyoucanalsodo differenttypesofartandotherfunactivities.Attheendof theday,wemeetinHensonagain,andthenweallgohome.
Whatwasyourfavoritepartofvolunteering?
Personally,Ireallylikedcreatingtheevents,butofcourse,I lovedparticipatingwiththekids.Ireallyenjoyedteaching themandbeingamentortothem.Igavethemlotsof adviceandhelpedpreparethemfortheirfuture,whichwas agreatexperience.
Whatisonelessonyoulearnedfromyourexperience?
ThemaintakeawayIgotfromthissummerwasdefinitely gettingbetteratteamworkwithmycoworkers.Youkindof halftobeopentoothersbecauseBreakthroughis fundamentallyaboutcreatingacommunityandcollaborating withotherpeople.Originally,itwasabitofachallengefor mebecausenormallyI’mmorereserved,butI’mreally happyitpushedmetoreallyworkwithothersbecausewhen youhavetodoit,youcanbuildreallymeaningful relationshipswiththosearoundyou.Allofthatalsotaught metoconversemoreeffectivelytogetthepointacrossand helpedmebecomemoreaccountable.
WhatwouldyoutellotherNewmanstudentswho mightbeinterestedinvolunteeringwith Breakthrough?
Ofcourse,thewholemissionofBreakthroughismakinga changeinthecommunity.Thekidsyouworkwithmightnot haveaccesstoaNewmaneducation,sobybecoming involved,youcangivethemsomethingthat’sasclosetothe realthingaspossiblewhilestillbeingenjoyableandfunfor themandyou.Ifyouwanttomakeachangeintheirlives, youshouldabsolutelyjoin,evenifyoudon’tknowmuch aboutBreakthrough.It’saveryrewardingexperience,andI encourageeveryonetovolunteer.

SpiritWeekwasablast!Thisyear,theGreenieswentto Broadway.TheyspentMondaymorningintheirPJs,dressedin theirhallwaythemeonTuesday,correspondedwiththeirgrade levelsoundtrackforWednesday,andforthelastdayoftheweek, dressedinclassicgreenandwhiteattiretosupportthefootball gameandHomecoming!Throughouttheentireweek,students participatedinfunactivities,suchasdecoratingtheirhallway, beingapartoftheirgrade-leveldance(whilehavingfunintheir costumes),andcheeringontheirpeersfortheVolleyballGame. StudentswereabletogetintothefamiliarGreeniespirittokick theschoolyearintoanawesomestart!
Forthehallways,eachgradedidthethemejusticewiththeir outstandingportrayalofpopularmoviemusicals.TheFreshmen had MammaMia,theSophomoreshad TeenBeachMovie,the Juniorshad IntoTheWoods,andtheSeniorshad TheGreatest Showman.TheFreshmendidverywellfortheir firstspiritweekas they filledtheLemle2ndFloorhallwaywithblueandwhite, alongwithstreamersattheentrancetotheirlockers.The Sophomoresbroughtthebeachtoourschool,asthe1stFloor Lemlehallwaywas filledwithbluefromtheceilingtothe walls—includinglemonadeandothersweettreats.TheJuniors steppeduptheirgameandcreatedamagicalwonderland—filled with flowers—withmanyreferencestobelovedfairytalefablesin the1stFloorJollyentrance.TheSeniorstookabigleapfromthe otherswiththeircarnivaldecorationsintheKrohnFoyer,and theyusedahugetent filledwithanimals(stuffedanimalsof course)andevenhadapopcornmachine!Eachgradeputforth anamazingeffortfortheirhallways.Ultimately,theSeniorClass of2025tookhometheSpiritStick—forthesecondyearinarow! A eralong,eventfulweekwasthemuch-awaitedSpiritWeek assembly,wherestudentsgottoengageincompetitionsand watchthePepRally.


EachgradegottoshowtheirGreeniespiritthroughtheir dancesandthevolleyballgame.First,thefreshman dancedalongto“ICameHereforLove,”showingoff theiruniquedancemovesandspirit.Next,the Sophomores’fullyembracedthe TeenBeachMovie theme intheirdancewithtropicalattirepairedwithsongsfrom themusical.Then,theJuniorsgethypeand“Crankthat SouljaBoy!”withchoreographyandcostumescentered aroundtheinfamoussong.Finally,theSeniorscameout withtheirbasketballjerseysandblazersinafun, interactivedancethatfeaturedsongsfrom HighSchool Musical toShakira.Greenieswereastonishedwhen Seniorscameridinginonscootersandscootedaround thePalestra!TheSeniorclasswasthrilledastheywere announcedasthegrade-leveldancewinners—forthe thirdyearinarow!
Attheendoftheday,a erthegradeleveldances,the additionofmiddleschoolersjoiningtheassemblyadded totheexcitementforthebigvolleyballgame.The first gamewasSeniorsversusFreshman.TheFreshmanput upagood fight,buttheSeniorswereabletotakethewin. Next,forJuniorsvsSophomores,theJuniorsalmostlost, buttheywereabletowinbyonepoint.Forthe finale, Seniorswontheentiretournamentandwereundefeated intheroundswiththeJuniorandFacultyteams. Everyonehadacompetitivespiritthatwasevidently shownduringthegame!Thestudentshadagreattime participatinginvariousactivitiesthisweekfromdressing upforthethemestogoingtoseethefootballgame Fridaynight.WhatagreatweektobeaGreenie!

SixtyyearsbeforeHomecoming2024, Newman’sArchivistMrs.GenieEverett McCloskey’65wascrownedHomecoming Queenin1964,markingaspecial milestoneforanintegralmemberof Newman’sfaculty.Infact,Homecomingat Newmanhasevolvedsinceitbeganin 1941,andMrs.McCloskeyhasbeenkeyin preservingthisspecialpartofNewman history.
Mrs.GenieEverettMcCloskey’65asHomecoming Queenin1964
Whenthe firsthomecomingbeganin Novemberof1941,seniorfootballplayers chosetheladiesofthecourt.Tochoosethe Queen,ticketsweresoldinthenameof eachoftheladiesonthecourt.
Thatyear,EvelynHodges’42was crownedHomecomingQueen,and theNewmanfootballteamwontheir firstevergameplayedatnight.The nextyear,thetraditionofthe Homecomingdancewasintroduced, andtheQueenandhermaids(the othermembersofthecourt) presidedoverthefestivities.Bythis year,theQueenwaselectedbythe studentbody,andthattraditionhas continuedtothisday.
Bythe1960s,theCourtladies (juniorandseniorgirls)werestill chosenbyseniorfootballplayers, whiletheUpperSchoolelectedthe QueenandMaidofHonor.The ladiesonthecourtwouldasksenior boys(non-footballplayers)toescort themduringthehal ime presentationatFridaynight’sgame. OnSaturdaynight,thesenior footballplayersescortedthequeens andmaidsduringtheformal presentationofthecourtonthe HensonAuditoriumstagebeforethe HomecomingDanceinthefoyer.At thispresentation,thegraduatequeen fromthepreviousyearcrownedthe newqueen.
Inthe1970s,theSeniorClassbegan toelectbothmaleandfemale membersofthecourt,andmembers oftheUpperSchoolcontinuedto choosetheQueenandMaidof Honorfromthemembersofthe court.Theywereescortedbymale alumniduringthehal ime presentationatthefootballgame.
In1985,theHomecomingfootballgame andCourtpresentationoccurredon Newman’scampusforthe firsttime:on thenewMichaelLupinFootballField. Twoyearslater,thefathersoftheladies ontheCourtbeganescortingtheir daughtersduringthehal ime presentation.
By1993,thetraditionoftheseniorclass selectingtheQueenandMaidofHonor began.NewmanUSScienceTeacherMs. RebeccaWeatherall’97describedher Homecomingexperienceasastudentat Newmaninthe90s:
“Ihavegreatmemoriesofhomecoming duringmyyearsasastudentatNewman. Therewassomuchexcitementamongthe studentbodyfortheFridaynightfootball gameandthepresentationofthecourt. Threeyearslater,in1996,the HomecomingSpiritStickwasintroduced forthe firsttimeattheHomecoming Assembly,createdbyMrs.McCloskey. TheSpiritStickhasenoughoneinch squarebrassplatestodenotetheclass winnersthrough2058.
Everyyear,Mrs.McCloskeyhastheclass yearandgradelevelofthewinningclass engravedononeofthespiritstick’sbrass platesfortheyeartheywon.Sofar, freshmenhavewonittwice,sophomores havewonitonce,andjuniorsandseniors aretied,eachwinningit13times.The Classof2005holdstherecordforwinning thespiritstickatotalofthreetimes:their freshmen,sophomore,andsenioryears. WhiletheUpperSchoolparticipatesin spirit-buildingactivitiesthroughoutthe week,theSpiritStickisawardedsolely basedonhallwaydecorations,decidedby apanelofalumnijudges.
Nineyearsago,in2015,the first HomecomingKingwaschosenbythe seniorclassalongwiththeHomecoming Queen.TherewasnolongeraMaidof Honor.
FastforwardtoFriday,October4th, whentheUpperSchoolgatheredin theHensonAuditoriumforthe HomecomingCourtAssembly, whereeachmemberwaspresented totheupperschoolwithashortbio. Thegirlsonthisyear’sHomecoming Courtincluded:ElizaPilant,Ella Aucoin,ClaireCarpentier, GwendolynGray,MayaHarris,Aria Jolly,CatherineLapayre,Isabelle Wanek,LucynaWojcik,and AdrianneZura.Theboysincluded: AmarWalia,DreDavis,Alexander Dulitz,EliFriend,PJFoster,Maslen L’Esperance,GeorgePipes,Nick Rezza,JustinWells,andNicholas White.Thatevening,eachcourt memberwalkeddownLupinField withtheirparentsduringhal imeof thefootballgame,whereSenior ClassPresidentJacobValentino crownedHomecomingKingAmar WaliaandHomecomingQueenEliza Pilant.

Thiswasalsoamonumentalyearfor Newman’sUpperSchool:A er18years, theHomecomingDanceofficially returned!A erhearinginterestfrom studentsaboutbringingbackthedance, theExecutiveCommitteesentouta surveytostudentstocollectdatato presenttotheadministration.A erover 80%ofstudentsexpressedinterest,the administrationgavetheplanagreen light,andthePEPandStudentActivities Committeesbeganpreparingforthe event.
Upperschoolstudentsgatheredinthe TuohyGymnasiumonSaturday,October 5thindressyattireandsneakers,andthey hadagreattimesocializingandshowing off theirmovesonthedance floor. Overall,thereturnoftheHomecoming Dancewasasuccess!Itwasagreat experiencetobringtheUpperSchool communitytogetherandcelebrateour achievementssofarthisschoolyear. AsvoicedbytheJuniorClass,Science andEnglishIIIaretheirmostdifficult classes.Tobespecific,forthemajority ofthestudentswhosaidthebroader Sciencesubjectwastheirmostdifficult coresubject,thatclassisAPChemistry. Inordertostaycalmwithupcoming assessments,theyrecommendwatching insightfulvideosandrememberingto alsonotstayuptoolate.
OurJuniorsareespeciallybusy,as mostarebalancingsports,clubs, sociallife,andmoreontopoftheir academics.Regardless,manystill manageto findtimetostudy,with over50%ofpeoplespending2-3 hoursstudyingeachweekand38%of peoplespendingover5hours studying.Formost,thismeans rewritingnotes,reviewing flashcards, practicingproblems,andwatching reviewvideos.SiteslikeKnowt, Quizlet,KhanAcademy,and—lastbut notleast—CollegeBoardarepopular resourcesamongstudentsfor studying.

MostdifficultclassesvotedbytheJunior class
Stayinguptoolateonaschoolnight willcausestudentstobeextremely tiredandgivethemanabundanceof stressoverhavingtocompletetheir assignmentsthefollowingday. Additionally,stayingupforalongtime doesnothelpwithunderstanding informationbecauseoftheinduced exhaustion.Therecommendedamount ofsleepforteenagersis8-10hours,but mostJuniors(about42%)get5-7hours ofsleepeachnight.Infact,about25%of Juniorshavelessthan5hoursofsleep. Studentswhounderstandclasseslike EnglishIIIHonorsare,understandably, usedtostrivingforsuccess.Tohelp withworkbuildup,theyrecommended tousetheirscheduledfreeperiods wiselyandtonotprocrastinate.Holding off workisfuninthebeginning, however,theworkloadeventually buildsupandcouldinclinestudentsto resorttomethodsnotinalignmentwith ourcorevalues!
Harderclassesleadtomoreworkload, andkeepingupwiththesecourses meansspendingmoretimestudying anddoinghomework.Approximately, 38%ofpeoplespend2-3hourson homeworkeachnightand38%spend 3-4hoursonhomeworkeachnight. Toreducestress-filledstudysessions, Juniorstudentsadvisepeopletobe mindfuloftheamountofeffortand workrigorouscoursestake,andthey suggesttakingadvantageofextrahelp opportunitiesandseekingaidfrom teachers.

AsfellowJuniorsourselves,wetook thisadviceanddecidedtointerview someteacherstolearnfurtherabout theirrole,asmembersofthefaculty andashelpfulresourcesinstudents’ livestocopewithstress.Oneofour intervieweesansweredthequestion: Whataresomestrategiesastudent candoinordertoreducetheir stress-levels,furthermorehowcan theymanagetheirtime?” Dr. Hermann,whoisapartofthescience department,gavesomeinsightful advicefortheJuniorClass;hestates:
Healsointroducedustotheideathat NewmanhasgiventheJuniorclasstimesof relieffromstressbyhavingAdvisory.The AdvisorsfortheJuniorclassarehelpful resourcesforthestudentstolooktofor helpandtohaveaconnectionwith teachers.Additionally,hetoldusabouthow theCounselorisawonderfulfaculty membertohelpkeepstresslevelsstable. Wedecidedtoaskourschoolcounselor, anotheroptionforhelpconcerningstress andschool,onherperspectiveregarding themanagementofstressandconcernfor students.Ms.Corcorangaveinsightful answerstoeachquestion,onebeing:“Asa facultymember,whataresomestrategies you’verecommendedforastudent(when theyarestressedout,etc.)?” Ms.Corcoran talkedaboutacknowledgingyourfeelings insteadofpushingthemdownandletting thembuildup.Shegaveananalogyabout repressingtheseemotions:“Yourfeelings arelikeagardenhoseandasyoustandon itthehosepressurethenbuildsandbuilds oritshootsoutallatonceandcauses damage.”
Whenaskedthequestion:“Howdoyou thinkschoolandexamsaffectstudent’s mentalhealthandhowshouldstudents accommodatethis?” Shediscussesthe pressureofJunioryearasstudentsare thinkingaboutcollegeandwanttohave goodgrades,butalsohighlightsthe importanceofmaintainingrelationships. Participatinginactivitieslikerunning, painting,watchingtelevision,oranother activityisagreatwaytoclearyourmind. Shealsorecognizesthesefeelingsare natural,whiletheymayseemscary,they willprepareyoulaterinlife.However,if theseemotionsappeartoostrongthenshe recommendsyoumeetwithatrustedadult toexpressthem.

Formoststudents,theyare first introducedtoS.E.Hinton’snovelin7th Grade(shoutouttoMs.Chase!).The Outsiders,basedonthenovel,isa coming-of-ageplaythatexploresthe livesoftworivalgroupsin1960s America:theGreasersandtheSocs. TheGreasers–fromthepoorersideof town–strugglewithsocietalchallenges andfamilialissues,whiletheSocs–the wealthykids–representprivilegeand socialpower.Thestoryistoldthrough theeyesofPonyboyCurtis(Onyx Kukuy‘27),aGreaserwhograppleswith hisidentityandtheviolence surroundinghim.Whena confrontationbetweenthetwogroups escalatesintoviolence,Ponyboyandhis friendsareforcedtodealwiththe consequencesandconfrontthedeep socialdividethatkeepstheSocsand Greasersapart.

ThiswasMr.Spitz’sthirdyeardirecting theFallShow,anditwasanincredibly emotionalshow.Projectingemotions ontotheaudiencewithoutusing dialoguewasapowerfulchoice,asit indicatedtheimportanceofmemory andrelationships.
Incontrasttolastyear’stakeonGrease, thisproductioncombinessoundcues, backgroundmusic,projection, multicolorlighting,andLEDlightbars todeliveratechnologicallyimpressive andimmersiveexperience.There’sno
rotatingturntablebutit’scleartheset hadsomele overinspirationfromthe minimaliststyleasitusesplaincurves andsweepingshapestohelpconveythe setting.ThissetdesignbuiltbyMr. Cramerandhistechtheaterclasswasa fantasticwayofshowingdifferent settingsinaplaythatdidnothave scenechangeswrittenintoit.

Thankyoutothecast,thecrew,and everyaudiencememberwhocametosee theshow.SeeyouallinHadestown…” Forme,thisshowwasveryspecial becauseitwasmy firsttimestage managing.BecauseIwasAssistantStage Managerinahandfulofshowsinthe past,Iknewthepremiseofwhattodo, butitwasstillveryexcitingtohavethe roleofStageManager.Ilovedworkingon theheadsetandbeingabletotalktoMr. Cramer,Zolia,Charlotte(inthebooth), andWilliam(managingprojectionsinthe winginfrontofme)todirectcues.Even thoughwedidn’tneedahugeon-stage cueduetotheshow’slackofscene changesandquickchanges,westillhada greatpre-showcrewthathelpedussetup thesetandgetthepropsready beforehand.It’ssuchatalentedcastwho worksowelltogether.Iamalwaysinawe whenIseeEvie,Sara,andOnyxonstage together.Theycanconveysomany emotionsandactoff eachother,it’struly beautiful.TheFallShowissoamazingin thatitallowssomanytalentedpeopleto expressthemselvesthroughtheir characterandI’msohonoredtobeapart ofit.
