“

BASE Camp has two meanings; first it is an acronym for Believe, Achieve, Support and Educate. The second meaning is symbolic of the encampments found at the BASE of a mountainside where climbers can stop for rest, first aid, nourishment and encouragement along their journey up the mountainside. We at BASE Camp believe CANCER is a similar journey in the life of a child, and serve as the encampment where they and their family can come for help throughout that journey.

FOOD PANTRY

BASE Camp collects non-perishable groceries, so that we can provide food for our families. You can help by donating food.

BASE CAMP

BASE Camp overnight camp is a ONE night monthly “camp” for children five to fifteen (5 to 15). We often combine an activity that the whole family is invited to attend - ALL AGES!! BASE Camp monthly OVERNIGHT CAMP is our main program, and our namesake.

HOSPITAL MEALS

BASE Camp delivers meals every WEEKDAY to one of the two local hospitals, or one of the three outpatient clinics serving pediatric cancer patients.

SECOND WISHES

Hundreds of children each year have a re-occurrence of cancer. Sadly, they are not eligible for another once-in-a-lifetime wish. BASE Camp created a program for those children called 2nd Wishes.

MILESTONE PARTIES

Milestone parties are requested by child-life or hospital/clinic staff to help children and families celebrate important MILESTONES along this journey. BASE Camp brings the dessert and balloons!

PARENT SUPPORT GROUP

BASE Camp coordinates Parent support groups in the hospitals, clinics, and local restaurants to help parents cope through treatment and with the loss of a child.

MEET THE MURRAY AND DUNN FAMILIES

It’s hard to envision this kind of life when you’re growing up and living in the city.

With all of the growth and change in the Lake Nona area, it’s hard to find a place that offers a respite from the concrete jungle. Lake Whippoorwill offers exactly that, and that is precisely what Kathy and Mike Dunn love about their community. They love the space and the seclusion, as well as the small-town, “downhome” feel provided. For Kathy, however, it did take some getting used to. She and Mike lived in the downtown Orlando area prior to moving to Lake Whippoorwill; she thought the move would be too far out of the way. Lake Eola and a Starbucks within walking distance were must haves.Even with the stark contrast, the family didn’t take long to embrace their new surroundings. Mike’s mother and sister live right next door to the Dunns and the close-knit family, and community, made it hard for Kathy to fathom living anywhere else. Twice a year, the community comes together for a picnic. At Christmas time there’s a parade with decorated bicycles and golf carts. It’s a lovely tradition, even if it doesn’t share the same amount of spectators as some holiday parades. “There’s probably only a couple people watching because the whole community is involved in walking in the parade,” says Kathy. There is plenty of fun for the whole family as well. Their son, Ethan, loves to fish and dreams of hauling in the legendary 80-lb bass that inhabits the lake. Madeline, their daughter, loves jumping on the trampoline and riding bikes with her friends, and with all of the space these activities usually take place in the Dunn’s yard. Kathy says they could fit a soccer field in the front yard, and another in the back. Both of the kids are involved in the Robotics club at the synapse center in Eagle Creek. It’s not all about technology for the Dunns. Twice a week the kids go next door to their grandmother’s house to play board games and card games. “There’s not a plug or a tablet in site,” says Kathy, “it’s a nice change.” Having family so close to them has made their time in the community truly priceless. Most often, the Dunn family can be found working around the house with their dog, Buddy, or enjoying Mike’s barbeque skills from his trusty Weber grill. It’s a lifestyle and an area the family says that they wouldn’t change for anything. “It’s hard to envision this kind of life when you’re growing up and living in the city,” says Kathy, “but now that we’re here I don’t think I could picture it any other way.”

The Dunns aren’t the only family that thrives in the small-town feel of Lake Whippoorwill. Shaun and Kerri Murray have called the area home for nearly 20 years. If Shaun’s name sounds familiar, there’s a good reason. He’s a legend and pioneer in the sport of wakeboarding and a four-time World Champion. Originally from Southern California, Shaun settled in the Lake Whippoorwill area after completing college at Florida Southern. He looked for a lot of places in Central Florida before finding exactly what he wanted in Lake Whippoorwill. “For my profession, it’s so nice to be close to the water,” says Shaun, “it’s just one of the nice things about this area.” He likes being close to the airport as well as his career allows him to travel the world, evidenced by his recent trip to Australia. He’s still very involved in the sport in the design aspect. Shaun now works with Nautique to help develop new boats and other products endemic in the sport of wakeboarding. These days, it’s a different kind of competition that’s got his time and attention.

doesn’t have to go very far to train, he’s built a training course in his backyard. He enjoys swinging around the obstacles much more than training at a regular gym. As for the competition, he likes competing against other athletes, but says that he really loves competing against the Ninja Warrior course. “It’s always different, so you never know what to expect,” says Shaun.

Since then, things have moved rapidly and the hope is to open a physical location somewhere in the Lake Nona area. Kerri says that a lot of their business comes from Instagram and other social media sites, which isn’t always an easy process. They have to shoot the pictures, edit them and upload them online. Fortunately, they love doing it and they’re always looking for models to help showcase their clothing.

A different member of the Murray family is doing big things in the community as well. Kerri and a friend recently opened an online clothing boutique, LoveThee Boutique. The shop was started after they weren’t able to find styles that they loved in the local area. The pair decided to start their own store, but didn’t know whether to start a brick and mortar location or sell their clothes online. They decided to start online and test how quickly business would grow.

When Shaun and Kerri aren’t training or running businesses, they love to spend time with their three daughters, Hayden, 9, Presley, 8, and Liv, 3, riding bikes or enjoying the local restaurants. What is your occupation? Arisara Lynch: Program Planner at an Aerospace Company Brian Lynch: Software Engineer at an Aerospace Company How did you land in Orlando? Arisara Lynch: Finished her MBA and MS degree and was currently employed at Northrop Grumman in Chicagoland area and landed a job at Lockheed Marin and moved here solo in late 2007. Brian Lynch: Graduated High School and got accepted and attended University of Central Florida for his undergrad BS and then MS in Computer Science starting in 2004. Both have lived in Orlando since. Favorite Local Hangout? In Lake Nona, we love having date nights at Chroma, or Nona Blue. We shop at the Sam’s Club and Walmart weekly. Favorite family activities? Going to Moss Park with the kids. Our favorite part about living in our neighborhood is how many of our neighbors are young professionals like ourselves. Most have young children or no children yet so our little ones (Evan, 5 and Natalia, 3) have many kids to interact, meet, play, and grow-up with. The people who live here are genuine and we all get along well. We have neighborhood activities for the adults and children. It is truly a wonderful place to raise a family!
