After the long weekend rush, the 2024 Intramurals at Cebu Technological University - Main Campus (CTU-MC) officially commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony on November 4, 2024, held at the campus grounds.
For some students, this can be a breather after the busy weekend and a midterm clutch ride. The program started with the different colleges lining up, and their candidates for the Premier Crown held their banners high.
Various activities were laid out along the event flow. Despite the humid air and the hot
breeze, Technologists showed their support, ensuring that their yells would roar across the vast ground filled with a crowd eager to wave their respective flags.
Following the parade, Dr. Joseph Barawidan, CTU-MC’s Sports Director, delivered an opening speech, welcoming everyone and marking the beginning of this year’s Intramural festivities.
The athletes then took the traditional Oath of Sportsmanship, underscoring a commitment to fair play and respect, followed by the ceremonial sashing of the Premier King and Queen.

UNIT II DETHRONES DEFENDING WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS UNIT V IN ELIMINATION GAME
Kaesia Lapiña
Unit II’s lady spikers are inches away from tasting the champion spot as they tested their mettle against their opponent, the defending champions Unit V (CAS), dominating the court with a solid 25-22 and 25-14 respectively, at Brgy. Tinago Gymnasium on November 4, 2024.
Both teams went all out during the first set, exchanging determined attacks and kills. Unit II’s seasoned team captain’s Marjoerie, with her solid tenyear experience as a captain, soon showed dominance in the court, aiding the team’s powerful countless blocks and defenses leading to a 25-22 first set win
Unit II went on and took no leads for granted in the second set. As the pressure of the elimination round intensifies each minute, Unit II pressed on with their attacks, denying Unit V any sliver of chances to extend the set and finally securing the match point with a 25-14 second set score.
In the post-game interview, Almodiel attributes the team’s coordination and communication as the key to their success.
“[Our] Motivation was from the team, dili mi madaog without proper communication and teamwork” she quipped.
Moreover, Unit II’s coach Prof.

Ralph Rodzen Macayana noted that he expected the win of his team with a statement that says “Kusog ang Team Captaindominant sa court”. In addition, he remarked that the strong support from the team’s setter and libero helped in locking the sweet victory.
Currently, Unit II stands at 3 wins and a single loss in the tourney. Nonetheless, the team
is determined to win despite the minimal time for their practices and their teammates participating in more than one sports events.
Meanwhile, Unit V (CAS) concludes their stint in the event. Last year, they were the crowned champions of the women’s volley category after a solid win. With this, new champions will be hailed.

UNIT IV (COE) CLUTCHES IN MEN’S LAWN TENNIS FOR GOLD

In a thrilling tight match between Unit IV (COE) and Unit I (COT-Day), Brendo Jayme of Unit IV emerged victorious in the semi-finals of the Men’s Lawn Tennis competition on November 4, 2024, held at the CTU-Main Tennis Court.
The Men’s Lawn Tennis Semi-Final Game was determined by the standings of each college department in both singles and doubles categories. During the match, Jayme secured a win in the singles category, earning a 1-0 standing against Unit I. However, he faced a setback in the doubles category, leading to a tense clinching round with a 1-1 score.
Reflecting on the match, Jayme noted the pressure he felt when Unit IV’s Doubles Team lost, prompting him to step back onto
the court for a decisive match to secure his spot in the finals. “I felt nervous because of the possibility of losing my chance for gold, which was my ultimate goal,” he admitted.
Fortunately, in their clincher round, Jayme claimed victory with a final standing of 2-1 against Unit I, securing a coveted spot in the finals game. His determination and skill shone through as he fought hard to achieve this milestone.
Despite his success, Jayme expressed mixed emotions about the finals. “I’m very happy to have made it to the finals, but I felt pressured during the game because I made a lot of mistakes. I learned a lot from it by adjusting my game style until I secured the win,” he shared.
When asked what to expect in their finals match, Jayme
remarked, “Unpredictable pa man, so win or lose, happy gihapon ko kay nakaabot ko ani for the first time,” emphasizing his enthusiasm for reaching this level of competition.
His preparation for the game included a dedicated routine of praying and practicing both at home and on campus. Remarkably, Jayme has only been playing lawn tennis for three months since he started in 2022. He pioneered the sport in his family, inspiring most of his family members to take up lawn tennis at their home court.
As he heads into the finals, Jayme is determined to give his all and hopes to bring home the gold for Unit IV. His journey in lawn tennis has only just begun, and with his dedication and passion, he looks forward to more challenges and successes in the future.

18 STUDENTS RESCUED FROM ST ELEVATOR AMID INTRAMURALS
Eighteen Technologists were rescued after being trapped in the Science and Technology (ST) Building elevator amidst the Intramurals 2024 opening program on Monday evening, November 4.
According to the operations manager of the CTU-Quick Response Team, they received a report at their station that 18
students were stranded on the ground floor elevator around 7:30 p.m.
Exceeding the maximum capacity of 10 people, the weight of the students reportedly caused the elevator to malfunction and descend to the first floor.
The operations manager said the students were taking an exam on the fifth floor, which they requested, before entering the elevator.
In circulated video footage, students were seen being rescued from the ground floor by Bureau of Fire Protection personnel.
The students were declared safe after their vital signs were taken, with no injuries. As of writing, the elevator remained non-functional after the incident.

NAVIGATING THE SUBTLE WONDERS BEYOND SPORTS
AsI traversed the paths of overwhelmingly vivid colors of stalls, heart-racing beats of sound from huge speaker systems, and the constant chatter from people that allures me into their kiosks, I found myself in subtle displease, or to an extent, bored.
This is the most anticipated season of the entire academic year for all Technologists—the Intramurals. The surge of anticipation for the series of events has taken me beyond mere enthusiasm, looking forward to the administration’s novel themes and dynamic highlights being prepared. While sports hold a little appeal to me, I find myself drawn to an experience that piques creativity and curiosity.
As I weaved my way to decorated stalls, clichéd booths piled up on the stream, with each having their own gimmicks. While I indeed value the dedication and efforts undertaken, it dwindles to capture the subtleties of the booths I seek, a booth that goes beyond just eye-catching displays. However, after navigating each stall like a renowned chef in search of its finest ingredient to put into his pot, one booth captivates my attention.
From handcrafted bracelets, digitally made stickers, and even well thought-out pin and
keychain designs, there is more to it than just the state-ofthe-art crafts made. It connotes the subtle message of the entire facade, depending on the perception it entails to the beholder. It is from the booth of the Graphics Artist Organization’s (GAO) Secret GAOrden.
Moreover, other than its visual representation featuring cottagecore with a touch of fictional creatures, the welcoming spirit of those who are stationed at their booth protrudes a warm reception to those nearby visitors, thus entails a good image of the entirety. More to that side is their sense of professionalism in their field. Crafting beyond the ordinary, from its miniscule to the macroscopic efforts put in each piece, is something that I take highly on.
Ever since I built up my interest in the arts, I have explored several art styles in various media. From charcoal, paint, and digital art, everything sailed smoothly; however, it lived on as an ephemeral hobby. It never came to a point where I set myself committed to the field. Despite that, whenever I came to places such as art museums and archives, an evident excitement goggled in my eyes, appreciating the beauty of every masterpiece.
Turning my gaze at the booth, my innate inquisitiveness could not hold its questions in mind and queried one of the booth

owners, “What is the inspiration behind all these? What led you to create such mythical creations?”
Rodgen Mary Pancho, GAO’s Event Designer, answered, “So we decided to merge the idea of Spiderwick and Tinker Bell kay mao man ang tan-aw namo nga unique so why not we implement it sa amoang booth design.”
As I continue my journey towards the center of the crowd, I find myself enticed again by another booth’s enchantment.

“Step right up and enter a world where laughter reigns and childhood dreams come alive!” This was what the Wicked Good Time Carnival’s booth was speaking right through my heart. Each step I took closer, the echoes calling me became louder.
Organized by the Future Early Childhood Education (FECEC) organization, the booth, with its red tent canopy together with black, purple and orange tones added an intense, hue, signs like skulls, spider webs and haunted cutouts gave a festive, eerie look, aligning with the Halloween season in the

The Carnival offered a myriad of pocket friendly snacks like fishball and tempura together with interactive activities like Pitch Boo, Wheel of Fortune, Tiny Logo Puzzle and Flip the Picture being the crowd’s favourite that brought enthusiasm to most of their student participants beside me.

Attendees find themselves immersed in an encouraging atmosphere that attracts other students to join in. With the organizers having to offer positive banter even if participants don’t succeed at first,
it ensured students would not feel discouraged in winning the games. This approach promoted a sense of community among participants, transforming casual visitors into enthusiastic players.
Despite unexpected rain, FECEC adjusted their recyclable spooky designs to maintain an inviting, positive atmosphere. Their commitment to a “wicked good time” ensures
each visitor leaves with a fun memory.
The Carnival’s success is evident as visitors eagerly join in the festivities. Laughter and joyful exclamations like “This was fun!” fill the space, echoing the organizers’ efforts.
Ultimately, this booth doesn’t just offer entertainment; it rekindles the joy of childhood, fostering connections and creating lasting memories. As the FECEC organization proudly states, “Nagbanaag ang kalipay sa among pinalanggang Technologists,” it’s a celebration of the happiness and camaraderie that define the essence of this year’s intramurals.
Each booth draws from its own inspiration, but one thing made this intramural extra special was the unity forged through shared vision.
For you Technologist, what is your favorite booth on Day 1?

Each college roared with pride, fueling an electric atmosphere as students gathered to cheer on their representatives.
A showcase of talent followed, featuring spirited dance performances from each college. The passion and creativity of the performers energized the crowd, bringing everyone together. When the hosts invited the audience to join in, the spirit of In-
tramurals truly came alive, filling the air with cheers and laughter.
The ceremony continued with a speech from SSG President Hon. Marjorie Kate Quizon, who officially declared the Intramurals open. Fireworks soon lit up the night sky, capturing the awe of Technologists and marking the season’s start with a dazzling display.
To conclude the night, a lively jam session led by the CTU Sensations had the crowd dancing and singing along, fully embracing the energy that will carry them through the week’s competitions and events. With this vibrant kickoff, CTU-MC’s Intramurals 2024 is off to a thrilling start, promising many more memorable and exciting moments ahead.

THE FIRSTS OF FUTURE DREAMS

How does a first make waves and ripples across a life? It drops across a surface, and washes out the wrinkles. Life unravels with untouched experiences, filled with moments resting on the quiet corners. The significance of new memories can mold a singular life, unseen details falling into place.
For the first-time candidates from Unit V (CAS) of the DanceSport Competition, this chance was a debut that would be permanently etched into their histories. Under the glow of a spotlight, they stepped into their dancing shoes like newborn children learning their first steps. As freshmen, they made their inaugural appearance, carrying the banner of their college onto the center stage.
Having secured gold in her very first competition, Maria Lourdes Cabueñas was grateful for an endeavor that blossomed through turbulence and triumphs. It is the attainment born from the numerous opportunities that she held onto, as
well as the irrepressible ones that slipped through her fingers.
“Sauna pa lang, Grade 7 to 8, niapil nako og training sa dancesport, but unfortunately, wala jud koy lalaki nga partner. So, ang choice nako kay muundang since wala man koy pair. Pag Grade 11 ug 12, I was given a chance nga mo-participate unta, pero nawagtangan ko og gana ato kay wala koy training, so sa kani nga opportunity, makaingon ko sa akoang sauna nga self nga ganahan jud mag dancesport, ‘naa najud, finally! First compete nako, nya champion pa jud.”
With this opportunity that launches the platform of their dreams, heartfelt sacrifices were made, and efforts were exerted during their preparations. Evidently, as torchbearers of their college, immense pressure to deliver a winning performance was the couple’s principal incentive.
“It’s so pressure talaga,” Adrian Agujero, a BS Statistics freshman, remarked in his interview. “We practiced for one
week ra, and di pa na one week kay naay times na holiday. But it’s so worth it. It’s worth the risk,”
When asked about what message he would like to deliver to his younger self that aspired him to be in this position, he expressed, “You dreamt about dancing on the floor and dancing in this genre. And now, I’m so proud kasi you made it. You made it, Adi.”
There lies a leap of faith in every endeavor that we take on. With every new beginning, it gives birth to a new experience that we bring onto our next path. For the winning pair from Unit V, this feat is the first of many achievements yet to unfold.
Embarking on journeys that venture into the unknown, it has taken considerable courage for them to take the first strides despite challenges and unfamiliarity. However, they show that determination perseveres above setbacks. Their first try molded the successes that they now hold and built the foundation of what’s to come.

THE GAME AGAINST THE HEAT
Banaag 2024 kicks off its first day on Monday morning, November 4, 2024. As the games commenced, intense matches between players were anticipated by spectators. Players head-to-head, spectators eye to target.
Beyond everyone’s awareness, players strived to serve under the sun’s glare. The first game of the day was set to begin at 8:00 a.m., where outdoor activities experienced direct contact with the morning heat. Athletes had to endure being outside to compete and accomplish the game as scheduled. Hot and sweaty, they strove hard for victory.
A game calls for water breaks as players change courts to prevent dehydration during the Women’s Lawn Tennis match. The Men’s Lawn Tennis, set to be inaugurated in the morning alongside the women’s matches, was postponed to the afternoon due to midday heat, by tournament manager Mr. Eleazar V. Opura.
The games were divided into women’s in the morning and men’s in the afternoon. The Men’s Lawn Tennis was inaugurated at 3:00 p.m. at the CTUMain Tennis Court. The game commenced with fair weather, allowing players to showcase their skills and agility.
Mr. Opura’s decision to push the game later helped keep players away from harsh sun rays, aiding their physical well-being. Despite the delay, the athletes competed and finished within the scheduled time.
As the head of the sports, Mr. Opura bears the responsibility of achieving the tournament’s goals while prioritizing athletes’ welfare. The health of everyone involved is paramount. Big decisions carry significant responsibilities, especially in crucial tasks.
Never take anything for granted, especially when others’ well-being is at risk. Neglecting one’s decisions could have detrimental effects on those involved and the general public.

THE WEIGHT OF A JOURNLIST’S LENS
The recurring stereotype of photojournalists that remains unnoticed by many students holds a degrading weight that undermines the purpose of journalism.
The seemingly repetitive issue that arises during the peak of Intramurals week has made us, journalists, feel increasingly burdened. We have many responsibilities, but we bear them with the principle of serving the student body. Because of this, our work feels more fulfilling than tiring. Unfortunately, many students fail to understand the purpose of our work.
On November 3, a Facebook page known as “CTU Confessions” posted a statement from an anonymous sender searching for someone who allegedly took their photos, wanting to claim them, or what is commonly known as ‘pitik.’ Attached to this post was a photo of a photojournalist from The
Modern Fisher CTU–Daanbantayan Campus Press. Not only did they create humiliation toward this person, but they also mocked his work as a photojournalist.
This morning, November 4, the first day of the Intramurals season at CebuTech Main, brought yet another instance of disregard. Two of our well-trained student journalists on coverage duty approached an athlete to ask for game details. The conversation took a swift turn when the athlete asked them about their photos, which were not posted on the page, claiming it was a waste of effort for a ‘mamitikay’ to take photos and not post them. The athlete added, “Mga Pinoy raba ta, excited pirmi. Samot na og naay pitik,” [We’re Filipinos, so we are always excited. Especially when there’s a “pitik”].
We say it over and over—we are not ‘mamitikay’ and certainly not personal photographers.
We are journalists, serving the student body by highlighting coverage and telling stories using our pens and lenses. The photos we take undergo a thorough process of selecting, editing, and enhancing—efforts that are not wasted but painfully unrecognized.
Most students still do not recognize the true purpose of journalism. This issue repeats year after year, despite all the articles published each time it happens. While we understand the excitement that Intramurals bring, we cannot stand idly by, accepting these degrading statements from those we serve.
Reasons such as “Pinoy raba ta” should not validate entitlement. It’s time to grow out of this egotistical mindset. While journalism has its own ethics, remember that the people it serves have just as much etiquette to display. Our commitment to professionalism deserves acknowledgment and respect.

OPINION
The truth is, it is not all about tents. It is about reliability, respect, and the weight of commitment.
Isiah Jade Ligas Circulation Manager - External
FRUSTRATIONS IN THE OPEN AIR
AsIntramurals season unfolds, students are abuzz with excitement for the lineup of activities, intensified by the camaraderie among peers, and the surge of school spirit that defines this annual celebration. Anticipation has been building for weeks, with both students and organizations preparing to showcase their talents, cheer on their teams, and participate in friendly competitions that created unity and pride.
The “TechnoMerkado” was an eagerly anticipated portion of this week-long event, with each organization expecting individual tents as promised by the student council, essential for providing space, organization, and protection from the sun and rain. This commitment was not just a passing remark, it was a core assurance given to each organization, and was one of the primary reasons to put due effort into their booths.
However, reality has fallen far short. These tents, meant to accommodate each organization’s displays, lacked in both
number and functionality. The reality of the event revealed a glaring gap between planning and execution. The council’s failure to secure adequate and functional tents left organizations scrambling, exposed not only to the elements, but also to a sense of neglect.
As Intramurals kicked off, it became painfully clear that this promise was more than empty words. Organizations were forced to manage with setups that were far from what they envisioned. It is beyond disappointing—a letdown by the student council.
This is not just a matter of logistical error. It is a blatant display of the student council’s failure to follow through. What was the point of all their grand promises if they could not even manage the essentials of a successful event? Students trusted them to make Intramurals an event worth remembering, but instead, the council’s lack of preparation has turned it into a chaotic mess, leaving organizations and students down,
wondering why they bothered getting their hopes up.
The truth is, it is not all about tents. It is about reliability, respect, and the weight of commitment. As leaders, the student council must recognize that words without action are meaningless, and promises made to the student body should be upheld, not unfulfilled. The organizations that pour time and energy into these events deserve better, and it is time the council takes responsibility, showing that their role is to serve, not disappoint.
What we need is not more speeches, empty assurances, or vague apologies. We need leaders who understand that true leadership is about actions that back up their promises, fostering a culture of follow-through and respect for commitments.
Let this serve as a lesson for the future, so that every Intramurals event can bring fulfillment, unity, and genuine excitement rather than frustration.

A PARADE OF OPPOSITE DIRECTION
Intramurals 2024 is one of the most anticipated and largest annual events here in our university, with events planned ahead of time to ensure a celebration that is truly one for the books. This year’s Intramurals, entitled “Banaag,” kicked off its opening ceremony in a unique departure from the “first-thingin-the-morning” programs we’re used to. Instead, the event opted for an evening start, adding an exciting change of pace and allowing for a parade that flowed in an unexpected direction.
The opening program is always one of the most crowded segments of the entire week-long event. With that in mind, the pressure to match the high expectations and hype from students and athletes was significant. However, even with extensive planning, small gaps in the parade organization and participant flow were evident as attendees began to gather.
Just minutes before the parade, an air of confusion surrounded the crowd regarding the start time and the sequence
of departments and organizations. For large events like this, coordination and clear communication are essential to ensure that each group has its moment to shine, and so students can recognize the different organizations in the university. Clearer direction helps streamline the process and prevents unnecessary delays or misunderstandings.
Despite a few initial setbacks, the opening ceremony was a success, featuring various presentations that showcased students’ dedication and effort. Spectators filled the venue, cheering and fully engaged with each performance. Although there is room for improvement, the positive energy and vibrant atmosphere reflect the hard work of all those involved.
Looking to future events, creating a clearer communication framework for organizing teams and participants will be essential. While last-minute adjustments are inevitable, clear updates from both ends can provide direction
and minimize confusion, ensuring a smoother experience for everyone who attends.
The start of this year’s Intramurals paints a lively display against the evening sky. The vibrant colors, lively performances, and palpable excitement among students foster a sense of community and school spirit. Though some setbacks emerged, it’s a reminder that every event offers a chance to refine, grow, and ultimately find the best path forward.
Through these experiences, we strengthen our bonds and cultivate a spirit of togetherness that will resonate throughout the university. The memories created during Intramurals last a lifetime, as students forge friendships and celebrate each other’s achievements, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, teamwork, and support. As we move forward, let’s embrace the lessons learned and work together to ensure future events are even more successful and memorable for everyone involved.
