The 2015 meeting creates a platform to raise nationwide awareness of the National GEM Consortium mission, Partners, and Fellows.

William P. Russo (Bill) Director of Operations, Manufacturing Engineering Ford Motor Company Presented by

William Russo is a Director for Ford Motor Company, with global responsibilities for Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering. Prior to this appointment, he served in roles as • Director Manufacturing Operations for Powertrain North America • Director Manufacturing Operations for Vehicle Assembly North America • Director Vehicle Operations Manufacturing Engineering.

Russo is leading Ford’s Global Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering at a critical time for new global product introductions around the world, rapid expansion in growth markets and upscaling production in North America that are critical to the company’s growth, profitability and competitiveness.

Russo, re-joined Ford in 2001 where he directed Vehicle operations Manufacturing Engineering, was involved in manufacturing processes leading the development of global Bill of Design & Bill of Process for vehicle assembly and created the Virtual Engineering Department.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Howard G. Adams, Ph.D. Dr. Howard G. Adams is Founder and President of H.G. Adams & Associates, Inc.; a Norfolk, Virginia based company that provides consulting and training in the areas of mentoring, student development, and leadership. In 1993, the Society of Engineering Education awarded him it “Centennial Medallion” for individuals who have had a lasting impact on engineering education. In 1996, Adams was named by President Clinton as one of the first recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Mentoring.

From 1978 to 1994 Adams served as Executive Director of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM). Prior to joining GEM, Adams served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Norfolk State University. Adams holds a B.Sc. from Norfolk State University, M.S. from Virginia State University Ph.D. from Syracuse University.

Terrence Buck Terrence Buck is a Principal Human Resources Representative/ Diversity Specialist for Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is responsible for recruiting, interviewing and hiring nonexempt and exempt level scientific/ professional and administrative staff. He provides career / job counseling for employees and acts as an internal consultant to Laboratory staff in providing guidance and interpretation of Human Resources policies and procedures. Mr. Buck represents Brookhaven National Laboratory at recruitment fairs and professional conferences where he actively recruits college students (undergraduate and graduate) for summer internships and Research Associate scientific staff positions.

He also administers the High School Co-op and Youth on Campus programs, and advises and mentors all students in these programs. Just recently Terrence became the AGEP-T Coordinator. This is a partnership with Stony Brook University - Center for Inclusive Education and Brookhaven National Laboratory with NSF - Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate – Transformation (AGEP-T).

Jasmine Davenport Crenshaw, Ph.D. (GEM Alum)

Sharnnia Artis, Ph.D. Dr. Sharnnia Artis is Director of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences’ Office of Access and Inclusion at the University of California, Irvine. In this role, she is responsible for programs at the pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate levels to facilitate the recruitment, retention, and overall success of students from traditionally underrepresented groups in engineering and information and computer sciences. Dr. Artis has 17 years of experience working with education and outreach programs in engineering. Prior to joining UC Irvine, she was the Education and Outreach Director for the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, Dr. Artis spent nine years at Virginia Tech providing program and student support for the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity and has four years of industry and government experience as a Human Factors Engineer. Dr. Artis holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.

Dr. Jasmine Davenport Crenshaw is an engineer, speaker, and author with over ten years of experience in research and development. She is passionate about the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). She holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from North Carolina A&T State University, Master of Science in materials science from the University of Florida, and Doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of Florida. During her tenure at the University of Florida, she was a GEM Fellow and interned with the Eastman Kodak Company. Dr. Crenshaw is the founder of Mind Over Matter Institute, where she builds competence, confidence, and collaboration for individuals in STEM. Her appointments include: Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Postdoctoral fellow, University of Richmond Department of Biology; University of Richmond Integrated Science Experience (URISE) Program Director; Department of Defense (DoD) Systems Engineer.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Shameeka Emanuel (GEM Alum) Shameeka Emanuel’s career spans almost 10 years at Intel Corporation where she has held a variety of positions. After completing her BS degree in Systems and Computer Science at Howard University and her MS in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University, Shameeka was hired into Intel’s premier one-year engineering rotation program. Upon completion of the program, Shameeka started within Intel’s Server Design group where she held various positions. During this time she worked to validate four processors in the Xeon family in various capacities (pre-silicon and post-silicon). Her most recent position in that group was on the memory controller validation team where her area of expertise was RAS features. Shameeka was involved with recruiting activities for this group for many years and just last year took on the new role as the Diversity Scholar Program Manager in the Global Talent Organization College Division.

This position is especially rewarding because Shameeka was also an Intel Scholar prior to joining the company. Shameeka is married with 3 young children. In her spare time Shameeka enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as playing the trumpet, singing and dancing.

Francisco Garcia (GEM Fellow) Francisco Garcia is a MS/PhD student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

He graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2012.

Francisco worked as a software developer for 18 months at DmgCtrl, Ltd as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania from 2011 to 2013 under the direction of Mubbasir Kapadia and Norman I. Badler.

Francisco Garcia’s research interests are Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and planning, specially, their application for autonomous robotic exploration.

Johney B. Green, Jr.,Ph.D. (GEM Alum) Dr. Johney B. Green, Jr., is the Director of the Energy and Transportation Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. ETSD develops and deploys technology that enables America to achieve energy independence and security, global economic leadership, and environmental sustainability. ETSD R&D spans a wide variety of research missions, including building technologies, sustainable industry and manufacturing; fuels, engines, and emissions, transportation analysis, and vehicle systems integration. Prior to assuming his current position, Johney was the Group Leader of the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Group, which specializes in the detailed characterization of internal combustion engines. Dr. Green joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1995, conducting automotive research focused on engine and vehicle experiments. During the course of that research, he joined a team working with the Ford Motor Company, seeking ways to extend exhaust gas recirculation limits in diesel engines to simultaneously reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions.

Michael A. Greene Michael A. Greene is Intel Vice President and General Manager of the System Technologies & Optimization Division of Intel’s Software and Services Group.

Greene leads a worldwide organization responsible for a broad range of development, enabling, architecture analysis and optimization efforts including pre-boot firmware, virtual platforms, software stack optimizations for a “Best in Class” user experience and client/server roadmap analysis and projections. Michael joined Intel in 1990, after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has managed several new product developments, research efforts, and engineering groups. He has served as Intel’s initiative owner for power efficiency, pre silicon software development, and has driven new technology benchmarking throughout his care. Michael is also the Marketing Vice President on the National GEM Consortium’s (GEM) Executive Committee. Mentoring is a very important part of Michael’s life. He is especially active in mentoring up-andcoming professionals andseasoned professionals alike in topics ranging from motivation, strategy, career-path planning, and more. Michael is also a dedicated family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. He takes great pleasure in playing basketball with his three sons, and attending their basketball games.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Sara Xayarath Hernández Sara Xayarath Hernández is the Associate Dean for Inclusion & Student Engagement for the Graduate School at Cornell University. Hernández directs the Office of Inclusion & Student Engagement (OISE), which leads the Graduate School’s efforts to recruit, retain, and support a diverse student body with a particular focus on students from groups historically underrepresented in graduate education.

OISE in partnership with Graduate School and university partners, leads comprehensive student engagement and professional development programming that fosters community and develops skills to enhance academic success, improve retention and completion rates, and prepare students to pursue academic and non-academic careers following attainment of their graduate degrees. Hernández has served as a University Member Representative to the National GEM Consortium since 2009. In 2010, GEM recognized Hernández as the University Member Representative of the Year and in 2013, she became the Standing Chair for the Operations Committee. Hernández is a first generation college student and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master of Regional Planning from Cornell University.

Bruce A. Lindvall, Ph.D Dr. Bruce A. Lindvall currently serves the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University as assistant dean for graduate studies. At Northwestern University he also chairs the Science and Engineering Committee for Multicultural Affairs (SECMA). SECMA is committed to recruiting, admitting, retaining and graduating more underrepresented minority students in the STEM fields.

Bruce has also worked for The College Board, the University of Kansas, and Purdue University in a variety of administrative roles that have revolved about admission in higher education. He is passionate in his work so that student populations are more diverse and that all students benefit from this. His educational background includes a BS in Mathematics, an MS in Guidance and Counseling, and a PhD in Educational Administration, all from Purdue University.

Michael Matthews, Ph.D.

John “Jack” Lesko, Ph.D Dr. John “Jack” Lesko is a Professor of Engineering Mechanics at Virginia Tech, currently serving as the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies and the GEM Executive Committee as the VP for Strategy & Policy – representing the universities. His work towards broadening participation have included the piloting of the GEM Associate & University Fellows Program as well as developing community and programming that promote persistence to degree.

Dr. Michael Matthews has been at the University of South Carolina for 20 years. He is currently the GEM University Representative. He has served as Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and is currently Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education. He is an affiliate of the Diversity Committee of the American Society for Engineering Education. He has published over 65 journal papers, has receive over $6M in external funding for bench research and for educational projects. He has mentored 14 PhD student, 14 Masters, and over 75 undergraduate students. In 2011 he won the ASEE/ AIChE Division Corcoran Award for Best Paper to appear in Chemical Engineering Education.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Gary S. May, Ph.D Dr. Gary S. May is the Dean of the College of Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. May was the Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. Dr. May’s field of research is computer-aided manufacturing of integrated circuits. He has authored over 200 technical publications, contributed to 15 books, and holds a patent on that topic. Dr. May created the Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering/ Science (SURE) program, SURE annually hosts minority students to perform research at Georgia Tech in the hopes that they will pursue a graduate degree. Dr. May was also the cocreator of the Facilitating Academic Careers in Engineering and Science (FACES) and University Center of Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM) programs, for which he has been granted over $17M from NSF and the Sloan Foundation to increase the number of underrepresented Ph.D. recipients produced by Georgia Tech. Dr. May received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from President Barack Obama in 2015.

Mary Jo Ondrechen, Ph.D. Dr. Mary Jo Ondrechen is Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and Principal Investigator of the Computational Biology Research Group at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned the Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Her research activities currently include development and verification of a computational method to predict the function of protein structures of unknown function, prediction and verification of spatially extended active sites in enzymes, and the design of novel agents to detect early-stage cancer. A member of Mohawk Nation, she serves currently as President of the Board of Directors of the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB) and served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque, New Mexico-based American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) from 2011 to 2013. She is presently a Board member of the Open Chemistry Collaborative in Diversity Equity (OXIDE).

Raoul Ouedraogo, Ph.D. Dr. Raoul Ouedraogo received the B.Sc. degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, in 2006, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, in 2008 and 2011 respectively. He worked at Motorola Solutions Inc., Schaumburg, IL, in 2007 and Monarch Antenna Inc., Ann Arbor, MI, from 2009-2011 as a technical consultant. He has been with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, MA, since 2011 where he works as a technical staff member. He has published dozens of papers and given technical talks focused on his areas of interest which include radars, small antennas, metamaterials, reconfigurable devices, microfluidics, and topology optimization.

Dr. Ouedraogo is currently serving as the publications chair on the IEEE International Phased Array Symposium committee and as Chair of the IEEE Antennas & Propagations Society, Boston Chapter. He is also the chair of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory African American Network.

Rhonda L. Peters Rhonda Peters currently serves as Senior Program & Engagement Marketing Manager of External Relations for Intel Corporation. In this role, she manages the overall strategic direction and tactical execution of the Stay With It™ Inspired

by Intel Program. Stay With It is an online community that delivers engaging content about engineering in the workplace, academic resources, internship information, and encouragement to engineering students so that they will stay enrolled in their engineering majors and graduate. In addition, Rhonda is the engagement account manager for various external organizations where she partners with them to deliver impactful efforts designed to increase the number of underrepresented minorities graduating with engineering/computer science degrees in the United States. Anderson D. Prewitt, Ph.D. (GEM Alum) Dr. Anderson D. Prewitt earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from the FAMUFSU College of Engineering, and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Central Florida, where his specialization was Electromagnetics. He also has a Master’s in Materials Engineering and a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Florida where his dissertation work focused on the Electronic Properties of Energy Converting Materials. Anderson is the founder of Prewitt Solutions a technology consulting firm, and he has conducted research related to various topics including Renewable Energy, Electromechanical Sensor Systems, and Applied Computational Data Analysis. Currently he’s conducting research with the WAMI Group at the University of South Florida related to advanced additive manufacturing of wireless devices via 3D printing using novel materials, methods, and modeling techniques.

Dr. John Shelton is a postodoctoral research associate working with Professor C. Fred Higgs, III in his Particle Flow and Tribology Laboratory within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Shelton was a recipient of the 2011 Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Postdoctoral Research Award. I joined the faculty at UNCChapel Hill in 2005. I received a Ph.D. and a M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and was a GEM fellow from 2001-2003. The focus of my research is atmospheric chemistry, the formation of air pollution, and the links to public health. I use high performance computers and three-dimensional simulations to model the atmosphere to try to improve our understanding about how air pollution forms.

I have also developed a biosensor technology to quantify the toxicity of air using living human cells. Through my work, I am able to provide scientific advice to policy makers who make the decisions that can improve our quality of life. I also serve on the advisory board for the Scholars’ Latino Initiative a program dedicated to providing higher education opportunities for Latino youth in North Carolina.

Pedro A. Torres-Carrasquillo, Ph.D.

Adrian Rodriguez Adrian Rodriguez is an engineer by training and real estate hobbyist. He holds degrees from the University of Miami in Computer Engineering and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Technology and Policy. While at MIT, he co-founded two tech startups and has 11 years of development and leadership experience in the tech industry. He is currently a Master Inventor and IT Specialist for Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions developing software for the retail industry and previously worked at IBM in the Systems and Technology Group.

He currently resides in Durham, North Carolina with his wife where they enjoy the outdoors and home brewing beer and wine.

One day, they wish to visit all 50 states and the 7 continents.

Dr. Pedro A. Torres-Carrasquillo joined the Information Systems Technology Group, currently Human Language Technology Group, at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in July 2002 as a technical staff member. At MIT Lincoln Laboratory, he has been involved in a number of areas related to information extraction from speech, including language, dialect and speaker recognition. His current areas of interest include automatic dialect recognition by combining multiple knowledge sources and speaker recognition in low data conditions focusing on forensic speaker recognition. Recently, he has been overseeing the development of software tools for speaker recognition. He was co-chair for the IEEE Odyssey 2006 Workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and is currently a member of the Speech and Language Technical Committee (SLTC). From March 1995 to June 1998, he was an instructor at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, where he is still an adjunct professor. Dr. Torres-Carrasquillo received the B.S. degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in 1992, the M.S. degree from Ohio State University in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University in 2002 all in electrical engineering.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Mark D. Vaughn, Ph.D. Dr. Mark D. Vaughn is Manager, Technical Talent Pipelining for Corning’s Technology Community and is the Lead for the Technology Community Office of STEM. In this role, Vaughn develops, implements and manages PK-20 science and engineering programs and initiatives in support of meeting the Technology Community’s near term and long term technical talent needs.

Dr. Vaughn began his 27 year career with Corning in 1988 as a Research Technician. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Alfred University, a Master of Science degree in Optics from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to his current role, Dr. Vaughn was a Research Associate in Modeling and Simulation where he was a noted expert in Optical Network Traffic Demand Modeling and Access Network Cost Modeling.

William G. Vizuete, Ph.D. (GEM Alum) Dr. William G. Vizuete joined the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2005. Victor Williamson (GEM Alum) Victor Williamson is currently a PhD student in computer science at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a particular focus on integrating black culture into computer science via multimedia on the Web. He graduated from MIT with a Master’s degree in Computer Science as a GEM fellow in 2010 with a focus on Network security and Web interfaces. He traveled to Ibadan, Nigerian in the summer of 2014 to study the Yoruba language of West Africa and is interested in multi-disciplinary approaches to promote and preserve African and African American heritage..

Sossena Wood (GEM Fellow) Sossena Wood, is a PhD Candidate in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s of Science in electrical engineering. As a K. Leroy Irvis, GEM Fellow, and Pitt’s Rising African American Leaders awardee, she currently works to develop one of the first anatomically detailed human head phantoms and electromagnetic simulations for ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Fulfilling the mission of NSBE is Sossena’s lifestyle. Once a student athlete as well as a Dean’s and Honors List recipient, Sossena has been determined to help fulfill the vision of NSBE -growing and developing the network of global minority technical professionals.

Future Faculty and Professionals (FFP) The Future Faculty and Professionals (FFP) Symposium is GEM’s signature career development program for junior and future faculty members as well as industry professionals. Whether a graduate or undergraduate student, a participant in a research experience or on an internship, various roles and responsibilities are part of the territory. Often we must perform well academically while working as an intern or perhaps while working as a researcher in a lab. This workshop focuses on how do we deal with life’s setbacks and come out on top. What happens when you have a bad semester as an undergrad or grad student? What do you do when you get a bad start to a research experience or the first half of your internship doesn’t go so well? This workshop will give participants the chance to learn and develop strategies to overcome these types of setbacks and “finish strong” even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Purchasing a Starter Home as an Investment

Purchasing a home is a complex and time consuming transaction. Knowing that a property could be converted into an income property could alleviate some concerns and eliminate delay in purchasing a first home. Purchasing such a property allows for flexibility to stay, lease or sell. Financially, being able to continue living on a student budget after college can support efforts to save for a down payment quickly. Access to real estate listings, estimated home values and recent sales is ubiquitous. Becoming familiar with an area over time, learning home prices and getting to know potential neighbors leads to informed decisions. Speaking to real estate professionals and attending open houses will lower the learning curve to begin making offers to purchase. Real Estate investment could be a hobby, profession or retirement plan. Eventually, that starter home will transition to the first property of a rental portfolio.

Emotional Intelligence: Why IQ +EQ + The Right Stuff In the world of science and engineering, there’s no arguing that a high IQ and strong technical abilities are the currency that often get you job. Or at least they used to be. In the 21st century, employers and institutions have become increasingly interested in a skill set that goes beyond the “threshold capabilities” that traditionally amount to entry-level requirements. Often referred to as “soft skills”, these are behaviors that have come to be strongly correlated with leadership and in the reality of agile innovation that we all live in. Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, is arguably the single most important indicator of leadership. This workshop will focus on the Five Components of Emotional Intelligence at Work, based on the seminal work of Daniel Goleman. Development of Speaker Recognition Systems Recent gains in the performance of automatic speaker recognition systems have been obtained by new methods in subspace modeling. This talk presents the development of speaker recognition systems ranging from traditional approaches, such as Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM) to novel state-of-the-art systems employing subspace techniques, such as factor analysis and iVector methods. This seminar also covers research on the means to exploit high-level information. For example, idiosyncratic word usage and speaker-dependent pronunciation are high-level features for recognizing speakers. These high-level features can be combined with conventional features for increased accuracy. The seminar presents new methods to increase robustness and improve calibration of speaker recognition systems by addressing common factors in the forensic domain that degrade recognition performance. We describe MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s VOCALINC system and its application to automated voice comparison of speech samples for law enforcement investigation and forensic applications. The talk concludes with appropriate uses of this technology, especially cautions regarding forensic-style applications, and a look at this technology’s future directions.

Insight into Atmospheric Chemistry The UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health is unique because it houses a department of engineering. Having engineers working closely with other traditional Public Health departments provides our graduate students with novel opportunities for exciting interdisciplinary research in air quality, human health effects, and sustainable water resources. In our department our graduate students have the opportunity to interact with faculty who has a large array of expertise from the physical and life sciences to engineering. These students tackle society’s largest environmental problems from the availability of clean water in developing countries to climate change. The first segment is designed to introduce the audience to the world of radar through live demos that explore the principles of Doppler, ranging, and tracking (audience participation is highly encouraged). The second segment provides a brief overview of the history of radar, the important role it played during the Second World War and its evolution up to date. The third segment reviews select topics of current and future research such as radar miniaturization for integration on small platforms, advanced signal processing, and cyber warfare.

Loss of African History and Culture

One challenge facing the African diasporas in the midst of Westernization and modernization is loss of African history and culture. The strategy employed herein is to integrate history, African languages, folklore and multimedia to find new and engaging ways for people of African descent to tell their own stories and to make original contributions to the arts and sciences. Particularly of interest is documentation of African languages, history, folklore and proverbs. These include integrating African language orthography on the Web, documenting lullabies and nursery rhymes and representing story lines within cartoons that introduce science and technology within an African context, while equally portraying the beauty of black heritage. Current research centers around a Web platform to document the Yoruba and Igbo languages of West Africa, and providing Web interfaces that support reading and writing in African languages and that crowd source content for African stories, proverbs, songs, histories and culture.

We reached new heights for Fall 2015 with 23.5% of our domestic PhD population being URM PhD students. The overwhelming majority of the credit goes to recruiting from the GEM Fellowship database. Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers for Natives in STEM “Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers for Natives in STEM” is a bold and innovative project to address the persistent underrepresentation of Indigenous people in STEM faculty positions at U.S. colleges and universities.

This five-year pilot project, funded by the National Science Foundation, serves undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in the biological sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, geosciences, computer and information science, and engineering. The first cohort of 30 students, recruited through the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) from 27 institutions across the country, began in the fall of 2014.

Currently 15 STEM faculty members, most of whom are Native American, serve as mentors to the student participants and each student is assigned to a faculty mentor. Through regular conversations one-on-one with mentors and through webinars and conferences, students receive guidance and encouragement in career development, including participation in summer research internships and writing graduate/postdoctoral fellowship applications. Frequent face-to-face and virtual meetings expose participants to topics such as balancing life and career, effective study habits, overcoming geographic and cultural isolation, graduate school and career preparation, strategies for success as a STEM major, integration of traditional culture with an academic career, and writing successful fellowship and grant applications. Short-term goals of the project are to help students to persist and succeed in their chosen fields and to continue on to the next step in the journey to a faculty position. The long-term goal is to increase the number of Native faculty members in STEM fields in higher education.

Developing Successful Mentoring Relationships Effective mentor/ protégé relationships are those built on principles like flexibility, commitment, trust and mutual respect. An effective mentoring relationship requires both the mentor and protégé to agree on specific goals and to work on ways of achieving them. A good mentoring relationship is one in which protégé can be independent, but knows there is a source of effective advice and constructive feedback. In this workshop, participants and presenter will interactively examine the role of mentoring and how mentoring relationships can be developed in graduate school and extended beyond. The presenter will identify effective mentor traits, how to select one or more mentors, and how to foster a dynamic and productive relationship between mentor and protégé.

Eric Chaidez 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Texas A&M University, MIT Lincoln Laboratory Modeling Wireless Communication Network Applications through the use of MATLAB and Simulink In modeling a wireless communication system MATLAB and Simulink have been proven to serve as reliable software tools to simulate theoretical network models. In looking at the communications architecture of a network, these tools can be used to model accurate representations of a transmitting and receiving signal. Through a combination of hard-coding language scripting and the block diagram features of Simulink, the complex computation of mathematical models required to understand a network system will be simplified. Additionally, in checking the reliability of such modeled systems, the simulation programs will also be used to calculate error rates based on successfully received data. The overall purpose of this ideal network model will facilitate the process of adding further variable factors to this framework in future extensions.

Caris Moses 2014 GEM Master’s Fellow, Northeastern University, Draper Laboratory Belief Space Hierarchical Planning in the Now for UAVs Long duration mission planning for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in unstructured environments involves managing a myriad of tasks such as sensing for targets; avoiding threats as they are encountered; and path planning. As mission time horizons increase, the overall planning problem can quickly become intractable in the geometric space. Hierarchical Planning in the Now (HPN) provides a method for turning an intractable problem into a tractable one, and for handling unstructured environments.

This paper aims to explore the possibility of applying HPN to a UAV domain as opposed to the usual manipulation domain. By “planning in the now”, UAVs are able to spend most of their computational power planning for the immediate future, while also generating abstract plans to execute farther into the future. This talk will address how HPN in belief space works and give example missions which exemplify the range of problems HPN is equipped to handle.

The ‘QUBE-Rube: Servomotor controlled Rube Goldberg machine’, will amuse both students and professionals alike, utilizing complex engineering principles yet still having a user friendly interface. This project was sponsored by the University of New Mexico and Quanser, a Canadian based company developing mechatronic systems.

Christine Allen-Blanchette 2012 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Pennsylvania, Adobe Systems Incorporated Motion Interpolation in SIM(3) In this paper, we explore the exponential map and its inverse, the logarithm map, for the group SIM(n) of similarity transformations in Rn which are the composition of a rotation, a translation and a uniform scaling. We give a formula for the exponential map and we prove that it is surjective. We give an explicit formula for the case of n = 3 and show how to efficiently compute the logarithmic map. As an application, we use these algorithms to perform motion interpolation. Given a sequence of similarity transformations, we compute a sequence of logarithms, then fit a cubic spline that interpolates the logarithms and finally, we compute the interpolating curve in SIM(3).

The main area of focus is on the development of automation and analysis tools to increase engineering efficiency of NAND and Emerging Memory Technology products. These tools were designed to gather and analyze data from wafer sort production runs and engineering experiments to guarantee component specifications and performance. There are two tools that will be presented: trim register comparison and analysis, and trim database setup. The goal of these tools is to automate the collection and analysis of probe datalog.

Ariel S Anders 2014 GEM PhD Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Intel Corporation Policy Search for Multi-Robot Coordination Under Uncertainty We introduce a principled method for multi-robot coordination based on a generic model (termed a MacDec-POMDP) of multi-robot cooperative planning in the presence of stochasticity, uncertain sensing and communication limitations. We present a new MacDec-POMDP planning algorithm that searches over policies represented as finite-state controllers, rather than the existing policy tree representation. Finite-state controllers can be much more concise than trees, are much easier to interpret, and can operate over an infinite horizon. The resulting policy search algorithm requires a substantially simpler simulator that models only the outcomes of executing a given set of motor controllers, not the details of the executions

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Presentation Location: Hancock Sara Brown PhD Student, Northeastern University, Draper Laboratory Machine Learning for PTSD Diagnosis via Virtual Reality Current diagnostic methods for mental pathologies, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), involve a clinician-coded interview, which can be subjective. In pursuit of an automated physiology-based diagnostic scoring method, we use data collected in a proof of concept experimental set-up that elicits a peripheral physiological response using virtual reality videos. By taking a model-based approach to unify the experimental data and expert insight to produce a new score, we arrive at a novel formulation, Sparse Combined Regression-Classification (SCRC). Our approach, SCRC learns an interpretable scoring function, reveals the salient physiological features for diagnosis and is resilient to cases where the clinical score is noninformative for training. We demonstrate SCRC performs better than generic learning approaches with respect to three sets of criteria chosen to reflect design goals for a physiological PTSD diagnosis score: parsimony and context of selected features, diagnostic score validity, and learning generalizability.

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Presentation Location: Hancock Maya Carrasquillo 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of South Florida, Intel Corporation Optimization of Intel Corporation’s Concentrated Metal Waste (CMW) Treatment System Intel Corporation’s Concentrated Metal Waste (CMW) Treatment system is designed to treat heavy metal waste, in particular copper, to achieve the company’s goal of 0% landfill waste. The system uses lime for neutralization, and a polymer that forms coagulants to produce a low amount of Cu in the liquid effluent, and increasing the amount of Cu that is adsorbed to the solid lime waste. The primary areas to address to optimize the system are as follows: (1) minimize the copper effluent concentration, (2) maximize the solids copper content for reclamation and recycling, and (3) improve the system’s automation features to reduce the manual intervention for system operation. A series of experimental tests were conducted varying the type of lime, the type of polymer, and also lime concentration to obtain optimal standards at a lower cost for operation.

Tenell Rhodes, Jr 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Drexel University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Hardware Exploration for Photometric Stereo based 3D Scanning This project explores the technique of Example-Based Photometric Stereo for desktop 3D scanning. The end to end scanning solution computes the surface normals of a target object from images. This approach assumes a fixed camera position combined with varying lighting scenarios during a capture sequence. A preselected reference object(s) and target object are imaged separately using the same lighting conditions to calculate the surface normals of the target object. The methodology requires minimal calibration of the camera and lighting environment prior to completing a scan, making 3D scanning possible in virtually any desktop setting.

Daniel Thompson 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Indiana University, Adobe Systems Incorporated SharePoint Site Design and Development My summer project required me to design and build a document repository for my team. After Adobe discontinued their support for the previous document repository, eRoom, my team was required to use SharePoint as an alternative solution. However, the migration of data from the eRoom repository to SharePoint was not efficient, and the learning curve for effectively using the platform was very high, so it could not be used to its full potential. My job was to redesign and rebuild their SharePoint repository based on each member’s individual requirements, and minimize the platform’s learning curve.

10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Presentation Location: Exeter Syndney Jenkins 2014 GEM Master’s Fellow, Louisiana State University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Challenges with Microscopic Traffic Simulation of Large Networks Microscopic traffic simulation of large networks presents challenges to researchers. Both network construction and calibration are cumbersome due to the level of detail required to customize intersection configurations and verify the accuracy of the model. This research focused on finding a solution to deal with these issues. The capabilities of SUMO simulation software were evaluated and compared to that of the PTV Vissim software, to determine whether the former was better equipped to handle large-scale microscopic traffic simulation.

10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Presentation Location: Exeter Jon Gonzales 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of California - Berkeley, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Optimal Control and Design of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) Systems for Electric Vehicle Applications The field of wireless power transfer (WPT) has drawn much interest and investment from the public and private sectors recently. Automotive WPT systems are well known as a safe, convenient, flexible, and autonomous means of charging that has the potential to completely displace today’s conductive charging (i.e. plug-in charging). The wireless charging of electric vehicles (EVs) represents a significant step in the context of connected vehicle, wireless communications, and autonomous vehicle operation.

Recent challenges with this technology, however, are optimizing the design and control of the WPT system to attain higher power transfer and greater efficiency. For this project, I present an analysis to design the capacitors and battery optimally, and then present a strategy to control the primary coil optimally. These methodologies are adaptable to WPT systems of different architectures.

Technical Proceedings Thursday, August 6 Loretta Cheeks 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, Arizona State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated News Frames and Migration over Water Insecurity Issue in the Southwest Region The purpose of this study is to identify and detect the discourse around drought (insecurity) and water in the Southwestern United States over time using online news sources. Framing is a type of media coverage that can influence audience’s attitudes toward a specific issue. Though framing is widely known in communication, this concept does not exist in computer science. Online news media content coupled with computer science advances allows for researchers to gain a deeper understanding of online behavior patterns, migration paths, and social influence. This talk explains the approach taken to address framing in computer science that includes a) first, identifying and detecting what the discourse frame is, b) second, we explore how the discourse is being produced by constructing an issues network for analyzing social structures, and c) finally, we will measure the discourse frame, affectivity, and key agencies over time for understanding the migration path.

10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Presentation Location: Hancock Alexandra Cote 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Molecular Dynamics of Water Confined in Nanoporous Silica: A Quasielastic Neutron Scattering Study Knowledge of the structural and dynamical properties of confined water under a wide range of conditions is of great importance as such water is ubiquitous in systems spanning from the natural to the synthetic. This study attempts to examine the effect of pore size on the diffusion of water confined to folded sheet mesoporous silica (FSM), a material relevant to many biological systems as a result of its similar confinement scale.

Quasielastic neutron scattering is used to investigate hydrated FSM-12 (16 Å pore diameter) and FSM-22 (39 Å pore diameter) at 245 K, 260K, and 270 K. Results indicate slower dynamics arising from decreasing pore size and lower temperatures. Examination of the strictly confined water using a universal scaling law provides further insight into its application to additional systems.

This study centers on a community of African American and Latina teenage girls as they began to form self-conceptions with computing and dance during the MoveLab. We found that supporting diverse roles of participation, creating a trusting and engaging social environment, having leaders model behaviors, and uncovering preconceived ideas were important characteristics for supporting self-conception formation around computing and dance.

The key challenge is how to capture the meaning of the input English query and match it against the ontology of the database. We propose an approach in which both English text and SQL queries are mapped to the same vector space, and Englishto-SQL matching is carried out by nearest neighbor search of the input English vector against a set of candidate SQL vectors that are generated on the fly.

Denae Ford 2014 GEM PhD Fellow, North Carolina State, MIT Lincoln Laboratory EICL: Pupillometry and Pattern Recognition Eye movement studies, specifically in pupillometry, have demonstrated a connection between cognitive load tasks and pupil diameter. However, many studies have not explored the alternative implications of this connection. We conducted a pilot study using a clustered, pattern recognition task and object rotational task to explore the effects of eye movement. Results from the study demonstrate a high correlation between the duration of the two cognitive tasks for participants. These findings provide the foundation to creating a system that demonstrate the ability to predict the adaptability and learning style of users.

Technical Proceedings Thursday, August 6 Michael Gonzales 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Notre Dame, Adobe System Incorporated Using Collaborative Health Technology to Support Acute Care Resuscitation Delivery Preventable medical errors are a severe problem in healthcare. Acute care settings, in particular, suffer from the highest error rates due to low situational awareness among clinical teams. Researchers have applied several means for attacking the issue, including checklists and technology interventions, but none have achieved widespread adoption. One potential reason is our lack of understanding of clinical workflow, the workplace environment, and the variety of interdepartmental and institutional differences between hospitals. To understand some of these problems, we conducted a multi-faceted qualitative study at three regional hospitals across the US. This poster presents our findings from this study, as well as our collaborative design efforts with clinicians from these institutions to develop a multimodal, collaborative cognitive aid for acute care resuscitation, aimed at reducing errors.

Jermaine Marshall 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Notre Dame, Adobe Systems Incorporated Development of a Test Automation Framework with Jenkins Plug-in in the Workplace Test Automation has become a significant area of investment for tech companies. Test automation is essentially the process of using software tools to execute scripted tests on software before it is released into production.

For this particular project, I chose the android programming environment.

In the workplace, it would be useful to know if these test cases can be used in conjunction with the Jenkins plugin for maximum efficiency and for use of HTML test reports. For my project, I experimented with test automation usage on an Adobe Android Mobile Application. The purpose was to implement these tests in an automated manner using the Mac OS X command line and explore the possibilities of implementing them with a Jenkins plugin.

ANSYS Workbench tools were used for CAD and mesh generation. A C++-based file converter was developed and used with the Exodus II model to convert from the Abaqus ASCII file format to the Exodus II binary format. Example case models were utilized and compared to previous studies. The protocol outputs consistently formatted data files for use in the loosely-coupled multiphysics models.

Provided this open source code, users may further develop novel battery cell, pouch, and module geometries for experimentation.

Derek Novo 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Columbia University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Adding Visualization to Media Attribution Model In the recent decade, online advertisements have become ubiquitous across the Internet. Unlike previous marketing strategies, online advertising gives marketing organizations access to valuable models and metrics that aid in tracking the impact of a particular ad. Of these models and metrics is a multi-channel digital media attribution model, which assesses the influence of the touch points (channels) leading up to the final conversion.

The model results are usually of many dimensions -- channels, campaigns, geography, etc. -- making it difficult to capture a clear and concise picture of the data through a spreadsheet. Here we discuss incorporating visualization features that better illustrate these statistics in an intuitive way, giving the user a clearer picture of how each multi-channel path attributes to a final conversion.

Parker 2015 GEM PhD Associate Fellow, University of Iowa Steroid Hormone Sulfation Catalyzed by Human Sulfotransferases is Inhibited by Metabolites of Commonly Occurring Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental toxins that are associated with multiple adverse health effects. Sulfation is a biological process that results in the normal cellular inactivation of steroid hormones, such as androgens and estrogens, to maintain hormone homeostasis.

Sulfation is catalyzed by sulfotransferases (SULTs). We hypothesize that inhibition of the catalytic activity of these enzymes by hydroxylated and sulfated metabolites of commonly encountered airborne PCBs will inhibit the catalytic activity of these sulfotransferases with steroid hormones. Our preliminary studies have shown that certain hydroxylated PCB metabolites inhibit these enzymes, while the sulfated PCB metabolites are much less effective at this inhibition. Such interactions may have implications for altering steroid hormone signaling. Future studies will focus on determining the intracellular effects of this inhibition of SULT1E1 by metabolites of airborne PCBs and understanding the potential effects of this inhibition on adipogenesis. Location: Mezzanine Railing Claudia Rangel 2015 GEM PhD Associate Fellow, University of California-Los Angeles Validating Traditional Consolidation Testing and Interpretation Methods on Peat from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta levee system is built upon highly compressible organic soil known as peat. Rise in sea level, land subsidence, and seismic ground motion all threaten the reliability of the levee system and safety of the Delta. The Delta is the main source of water for agricultural and domestic use throughout California and is fundamental to the survival of the state and its 37 million residents. Failure of the levees would halt water distribution in California for its citizens and for an agricultural industry that provides millions in revenue to the state economy.

The goal of this research investigation is to determine whether traditional consolidation testing and data interpretation methods can reliably be used to measure peat properties. Primary focus of the project will be characterization of the transition from primary consolidation to secondary compression in peat to provide insight into its settlement behavior and stress history. Knowledge gained from these studies on the nature of consolidation of peat can aid in the implementation of changes to the levee system that may protect the Delta from natural disasters and prevent a national crisis.

The end to end scanning solution computes the surface normals of a target object from images. This approach assumes a fixed camera position combined with varying lighting scenarios during a capture sequence. A preselected reference object(s) and target object are imaged separately using the same lighting conditions to calculate the surface normals of the target object. The methodology requires minimal calibration of the camera and lighting environment prior to completing a scan, making 3D scanning possible in virtually any desktop setting.

After Adobe discontinued their support for the previous document repository, eRoom, my team was required to use SharePoint as an alternative solution. However, the migration of data from the eRoom repository to SharePoint was not efficient, and the learning curve for effectively using the platform was very high, so it could not be used to its full potential. My job was to redesign and rebuild their SharePoint repository based on each member’s individual requirements, and minimize the platform’s learning curve.

12:15 PM -1:45 PM Poster Location: Mezzanine Railing Nicholas Hines 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Georgia Institute of Technology, Corning Incorporated System Design for Inducing Transients and Analyzing the Resulting Stress in Glass Thermal and mechanical design of an experimental apparatus was executed to be used for the study of mechanical stress in glass. This process included the use of theoretical calculations and finite element analysis to model the apparatus, coordination of the manufacturing of assembly components, and collaboration with electrical and computer engineers to engineer electrical hardware, control systems, and graphic user interface software to manipulate the experimental apparatus. The results of the design process and experimentation were presented to the direct supervisor to be used toward further design efforts and process improvements.

2:00 PM– 3:00 PM Presentation Location: Hancock Rosalind McCullough 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Alabama - Huntsville, Adobe Systems Incorporated Getting More from NOC Alerts The Adobe Network Operations Center (NOC) is responsible for responding to network issues (e.g. outages) in a timely manner. As such, network alerts are sent to the NOC for monitoring and/or action. In its current state, the tool used by the NOC does not automatically associate an alert with all of the device services upon which it can occur; nor does it differentiate between different device services when triage tasks for a particular alert are assigned (i.e. every device service receives the same triage tasks for a particular type of alert). In addition, there is no direct association between alerts, device services, and devices. To rectify this situation, alert triage tasks were standardized and housed in a relational database. Then a data warehouse was linked to the database.

This architecture promotes continued maintenance of standardized alert phrasing, batch CRUD operations, alert analysis, and improved reporting.

2:00 PM– 3:00 PM Presentation Location: Hancock Komi Messan 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, Arizona State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated A two patch prey-predator model with dispersal in predators driven by the strength of predation Dispersal plays an important role in the dynamics of prey-predator interactions, which also can be considered as mechanisms that contributes to self-organization behavior. In nature, there are many examples of preypredator interactions where prey is immobile while predator disperses between patches through different factors such as its population density and the strength of predation at that patch. In this work, we propose a Rosenzweig-MacArthur prey-predator two patch model with the following assumptions: 1. No dispersal in prey; 2. Predator’s dispersal is driven by the strength of predation. We provide basic dynamical properties of this two-patch model; the local/global dynamics and dynamical patterns when the patch model has one dispersal strategy; and compare how this strategy differs from the classical dispersal that is driven by local population density of predator. We briefly discuss our on-going and future work.

Today, parking is characterized by a lack of information for both drivers and parking operators. ParkiT’s goal is to create a parking technology to facilitate information collection and sharing.

We developed an array of computer vision based-algorithms to detect open spots in outdoor environments and built a networking system that connects cameras, central server, and user interface. First, we collect camera images of parking lots and securely transmit that data to a storage server and a computer. Then, using a combination of Support Vector Machine learning techniques, we detect open spaces. Finally, the results are displayed on a user interface for parking operators to visualize the lot’s status. In 2015, we

3:10 PM– 4:10 PM Presentation Location: Hancock Victor O Santos Uceta 2014 GEM PhD Fellow, Purdue University, Adobe Systems Incorporated JSpeed.io: A Javascript Powered Distributed System for High Performance Computing As the era of big data becomes main stream, the need to process large datasets and intensive calculations in a batch and streaming fashion becomes a necessity. We present a new distributed system that offers trivial setup, simple still powerful programming model, and high level of abstraction without sacrificing performance, maintainability, and scalability. We expose how emerging technologies such as Node.js helped us to implementation sandboxing techniques in private, and crowd sourced execution points with high levels of abstraction. Our system has its specific programming model, which involves the implementation of distributed algorithms as finite state machines that switch states asynchronously at each internal or external event. This event-driven automaton programming model makes it possible to create high performance/non-blocking distributed algorithms without the need of any concurrent primitive such as locks, semaphores, and mutexes, and therefore simplifying the implementation and maintainability.

Abdiel Quetz 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Southern Illinois University*, Brookhaven National Laboratory Study of Reactive Ion Etching for Kinoform Lenses The growing worldwide availability of high-brightness synchrotron radiation in the hard x-ray regime has increased the demand for high resolution focusing optics.Kinoforms offer achievable focusing efficiencies of over 90. In this project, we developed the Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) process at the CFN Center for functional Nanomaterials (CFN) for kinoform lenses, thus increasing the available supply of locally produced refractive lenses, for the CHX beamline, and other NSLS-II beamlines.

The RIE was performed on silicon material, the RIE process was optimize achieving an etch dept of 100 microns in the making of the x-ray lenses .

Leopoldo Torres 2014 GEM PhD University Fellow, University of Maryland-College Park Colorimetric Response of Hydrogel Nanocomposite via Enzymatic Cleavage of Chemical Bonds Hydrogels with structural color can be tailored to sense target chemicals or proteins and respond via a colorimetric shift. This is made possible by the change in spacing between nanostructures, normally due to a swelling or collapsing event. We developed a hydrogel with readily cleavable crosslinks, composed of dicysteine peptides specific to the enzyme chymotrypsin, which can produce a red to blue color shift through this structural color phenomena. The fundamentals of this work will ultimately translate to the development of responsive polymers that could be utilized as “litmus test” diagnostics for single or multiplex systems, designed as small or large “sticker” sheets. Sensors of this kind would provide first responders, or even personnel with limited training in a limited resource setting, with a reliable method to detect pathogens and prevent disease.

Ocampo Giraldo 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Pennsylvania State University, Brookhaven National Laboratory Refining Spatial Resolution in Pixelated CZT Detectors Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) crystal defects are a major problem for radiation detectors causing response non-uniformity across the detector.

To address this challenge, position-sensitive detectors have been designed by subdividing the detectors area into small pixels. However, charge signal induced on each pixel is greatly reduced. This research focuses on creating a novel method to correctly measure the amplitude of the pixel signals so that these can be measured dynamically and accurately to regain the correct signal magnitude. This will refine CZT spatial resolution and allow the usage of crystals with defects for making detectors with sub-percent energy resolution.

In looking at the communications architecture of a network, these tools can be used to model accurate representations of a transmitting and receiving signal.

Through a combination of hard-coding language scripting and the block diagram features of Simulink, the complex computation of mathematical models required to understand a network system will be simplified.

Additionally, in checking the reliability of such modeled systems, the simulation programs will also be used to calculate error rates based on successfully received data. The overall purpose of this ideal network model will facilitate the process of adding further variable factors to this framework in future extensions.

The ‘QUBE-Rube: Servomotor controlled Rube Goldberg machine’, will amuse both students and professionals alike, utilizing complex engineering principles yet still having a user friendly interface. This project was sponsored by the University of New Mexico and Quanser, a Canadian based company developing mechatronic systems.

The main area of focus is on the development of automation and analysis tools to increase engineering efficiency of NAND and Emerging Memory Technology products. These tools were designed to gather and analyze data from wafer sort production runs and engineering experiments to guarantee component specifications and performance. There are two tools that will be presented: trim register comparison and analysis, and trim database setup. The goal of these tools is to automate the collection and analysis of probe datalog.

9:45 AM – 10:45 AM Location: Exeter Caris Moses 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Northeastern University, Draper Laboratory Belief Space Hierarchical Planning in the Now for UAVs Long duration mission planning for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in unstructured environments involves managing a myriad of tasks such as sensing for targets; avoiding threats as they are encountered; and path planning. As mission time horizons increase, the overall planning problem can quickly become intractable in the geometric space. Hierarchical Planning in the Now (HPN) provides a method for

turning an intractable problem into a tractable one, and for handling unstructured environments. This paper aims to explore the possibility of applying HPN to a UAV domain as opposed to the usual manipulation domain. By “planning in the now”, UAVs are able to spend most of their computational power planning for the immediate future, while also generating abstract plans to execute farther into the future. This talk will address how HPN in belief space works and give example missions which exemplify the range of problems HPN is equipped to handle.

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Location: Hancock Christine Allen-Blanchette 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Pennsylvania, Adobe Systems Incorporated Motion Interpolation in SIM(3) In this paper, we explore the exponential map and its inverse, the logarithm map, for the group SIM(n) of similarity transformations in Rn which are the composition of a rotation, a translation and a uniform scaling. We give a formula for the exponential map and we prove that it is surjective. We give an explicit formula for the case of n = 3 and show how to efficiently compute the logarithmic map. As an application, we use these algorithms to perform motion interpolation. Given a sequence of similarity transformations, we compute a sequence of logarithms, then fit a cubic spline that interpolates the logarithms and finally, we compute the interpolating curve in SIM(3).

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Location: Hancock Ariel S Anders 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Intel Corporation Policy Search for Multi-Robot Coordination Under Uncertainty We introduce a principled method for multi-robot coordination based on a generic model (termed a MacDec-POMDP) of multi-robot cooperative planning in the presence of stochasticity, uncertain sensing and communication limitations. We present a new MacDec-POMDP planning algorithm that searches over policies represented as finite-state controllers, rather than the existing policy tree representation. Finitestate controllers can be much more concise than trees, are much easier to interpret, and can operate over an infinite horizon. The resulting policy search algorithm requires a substantially simpler simulator that models only the outcomes of executing a given set of motor controllers, not the details of the executions themselves and can to solve significantly larger problems than existing MacDec-POMDP planners. We demonstrate significantly improved performance over previous methods and application to a cooperative multi-robot bartending task, showing that our method can be used for actual multi-robot systems.

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Location: Hancock Sara Brown 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Northeastern University, Draper Laboratory Machine Learning for PTSD Diagnosis via Virtual Reality Current diagnostic methods for mental pathologies, such as PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), involve a clinician-coded interview, which can be subjective. In pursuit of an automated physiology-based diagnostic scoring method, we use data collected in a proof of concept experimental set-up that elicits a peripheral physiological response using virtual reality videos. By taking a model-based approach to unify the experimental data and expert insight to produce a new score, we arrive at a novel formulation, Sparse Combined Regression-Classification (SCRC).

9:45 AM - 10:45AM Location: Hancock Carrasquillo, Maya 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of South Florida, Intel Corporation Optimization of Intel Corporation’s Concentrated Metal Waste (CMW) Treatment System Intel Corporation’s Concentrated Metal Waste (CMW) Treatment system is designed to treat heavy metal waste, in particular copper, to achieve the company’s goal of 0% landfill waste. The system uses lime for neutralization, and a polymer that forms coagulants to produce a low amount of Cu in the liquid effluent, and increasing the amount of Cu that is adsorbed to the solid lime waste. The primary areas to address to optimize the system are as follows: (1) minimize the copper effluent concentration, (2) maximize the solids copper content for reclamation and recycling, and (3) improve the system’s automation features to reduce the manual intervention for system operation. A series of experimental tests were conducted varying the type of lime, the type of polymer, and also lime concentration to obtain optimal standards at a lower cost for operation.

Both network construction and calibration are cumbersome due to the level of detail required to customize intersection configurations and verify the accuracy of the model. This research focused on finding a solution to deal with these issues. The capabilities of SUMO simulation software were evaluated and compared to that of the PTV Vissim software, to determine whether the former was better equipped to handle large-scale microscopic traffic simulation.

10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Location: Hancock Jon Gonzales 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of California - Berkeley, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Optimal Control and Design of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) Systems for Electric Vehicle Applications The field of wireless power transfer (WPT) has drawn much interest and investment from the public and private sectors recently. Automotive WPT systems are well known as a safe, convenient, flexible, and autonomous means of charging that has the potential to completely displace today’s conductive charging (i.e. plug-in charging). The wireless charging of electric vehicles (EVs) represents a significant step in the context of connected vehicle, wireless communications, and autonomous vehicle operation. Recent challenges with this technology, however, are optimizing the design and control of the WPT system to attain higher power transfer and greater efficiency. For this project, I present an analysis to design the capacitors and battery optimally, and then present a strategy to control the primary coil optimally. These methodologies are adaptable to WPT systems of different architectures.

Framing is a type of media coverage that can influence audience’s attitudes toward a specific issue. Though framing is widely known in communication, this concept does not exist in computer science. Online news media content coupled with computer science advances allows for researchers to gain a deeper understanding of online behavior patterns, migration paths, and social influence. This talk explains the approach taken to address framing in computer science that includes a) first, identifying and detecting what the discourse frame is, b) second, we explore how the discourse is being produced by constructing an issues network for analyzing social structures, and c) finally, we will measure the discourse frame, affectivity, and key agencies over time for understanding the migration path.

Technical Proceedings Thursday, August 6 10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Location: Hancock Cote, Alexandra 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Molecular Dynamics of Water Confined in Nanoporous Silica: A Quasielastic Neutron Scattering Study Knowledge of the structural and dynamical properties of confined water under a wide range of conditions is of great importance as such water is ubiquitous in systems spanning from the natural to the synthetic. This study attempts to examine the effect of pore size on the diffusion of water confined to folded sheet mesoporous silica (FSM), a material relevant to many biological systems as a result of its similar confinement scale.

Quasielastic neutron scattering is used to investigate hydrated FSM-12 (16 Å pore diameter) and FSM-22 (39 Å pore diameter) at 245 K, 260K, and 270 K. Results indicate slower dynamics arising from decreasing pore size and lower temperatures. Examination of the strictly confined water using a universal scaling law provides further insight into its application to additional systems.

2:00 PM– 3:00 PM Location: Hancock Rosalind McCullough 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Alabama - Huntsville, Adobe Systems Incorporated Getting More from NOC Alerts The Adobe Network Operations Center (NOC) is responsible for responding to network issues (e.g. outages) in a timely manner. As such, network alerts are sent to the NOC for monitoring and/or action. In its current state, the tool used by the NOC does not automatically associate an alert with all of the device services upon which it can occur; nor does it differentiate between different device services when triage tasks for a particular alert are assigned (i.e. every device service receives the same triage tasks for a particular type of alert). In addition, there is no direct association between alerts, device services, and devices. To rectify this situation, alert triage tasks were standardized and housed in a relational database. Then a data warehouse was linked to the database.

This architecture promotes continued maintenance of standardized alert phrasing, batch CRUD operations, alert analysis, and improved reporting.

10:55 AM– 11:55 AM Location: Hancock Kayla DesPortes 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Georgia Institute of Technology, Adobe Systems Incorporated The MoveLab: Supporting Diversity through Self- Conceptions Individuals within underrepresented populations in computing often do not perceive the identity of a computer scientist as aligning with their interests or value system. In many cases this leads to rejection of opportunities to participate within the discipline. To engage a diversity of individuals in computing, we need to better understand how to support students in forming positive and meaningful identities with computing.

This study centers on a community of African American and Latina teenage girls as they began to form self-conceptions with computing and dance during the MoveLab. We found that supporting diverse roles of participation, creating a trusting and engaging social environment, having leaders model behaviors, and uncovering preconceived ideas were important characteristics for supporting self-conception formation around computing and dance.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Presentation Exeter Bryan A Hall 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Iowa State University Game Development from Legacy Code In the professional realm of software development, engineers will often encounter Legacy Code in their projects. In this presentation, I will show you how my team extended the professor’s Legacy Code to create a new video game.

2:00 PM– 3:00 PM Location: Hancock Nicholas Hines 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Georgia Institute of Technology, Corning Incorporated System Design for Inducing Transients and Analyzing the Resulting Stress in Glass Thermal and mechanical design of an experimental apparatus was executed to be used for the study of mechanical stress in glass. This process included the use of theoretical calculations and finite element analysis to model the apparatus, coordination of the manufacturing of assembly components, and collaboration with electrical and computer engineers to engineer electrical hardware, control systems, and graphic user interface software to manipulate the experimental apparatus. The results of the design process and experimentation were presented to the direct supervisor to be used toward further design efforts and process improvements.

2:00 PM– 3:00 PM Location: Hancock Komi Messan 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Arizona State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated A two patch prey-predator model with dispersal in predators driven by the strength of predation Dispersal plays an important role in the dynamics of prey-predator interactions, which also can be considered as mechanisms that contributes to self-organization behavior. In nature, there are many examples of preypredator interactions where prey is immobile while predator disperses between patches through different factors such as its population density and the strength of predation at that patch. In this work, we propose a Rosenzweig-MacArthur prey-predator two patch model with the following assumptions: 1. No dispersal in prey; 2. Predator’s dispersal is driven by the strength of predation. We provide basic dynamical properties of this two-patch model; the local/global dynamics and dynamical patterns when the patch model has one dispersal strategy; and compare how this strategy differs from the classical dispersal that is driven by local population density of predator. We briefly discuss our on-going and future work.

3:10 PM– 4:10 PM Location: Hancock John-Paul Milton 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Tennessee-Knoxville Finite element mesh generation techniques and a conversion tool for the Virtual Integrated Battery Environment To promote the enhancement and collaboration in lithium-ion battery research, a finite element preprocessing protocol was developed to streamline the variety of available open source and proprietary meshing tools to a singular data file format, Exodus II. This presentation introduces a process for finite element mesh preprocessing for battery simulations within the Virtual Integrated Battery Environment, developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. ANSYS Workbench tools were used for CAD and mesh generation. A C++-based file converter was developed and used with the Exodus II model to convert from the Abaqus ASCII file format to the Exodus II binary format. Example case models were utilized and compared to previous studies. The protocol outputs consistently formatted

3:10 PM– 4:10 PM Location: Hancock Leopoldo Torres 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Maryland-College Park Colorimetric Response of Hydrogel Nanocomposite via Enzymatic Cleavage of Chemical Bonds Hydrogels with structural color can be tailored to sense target chemicals or proteins and respond via a colorimetric shift. This is made possible by the change in spacing between nanostructures, normally due to a swelling or collapsing event. We developed a hydrogel with readily cleavable crosslinks, composed of dicysteine peptides specific to the enzyme chymotrypsin, which can produce a red to blue color shift through this structural color phenomena. The fundamentals of this work will ultimately translate to the development of responsive polymers that could be utilized as “litmus test” diagnostics for single or multiplex systems, designed as small or large “sticker” sheets. Sensors of this kind would provide first responders, or even personnel with limited training in a limited resource setting, with a reliable method to detect pathogens and prevent disease.

3:10 PM– 4:10 PM Location: Hancock Sean Peters 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Stanford University Computer Vision Based Open Parking Spot Detection It’s something we’ve all faced: circling around a parking lot, desperately searching for an open space. Today, parking is characterized by a lack of information for both drivers and parking operators. ParkiT’s goal is to create a parking technology to facilitate information collection and sharing.

We developed an array of computer vision based-algorithms to detect open spots in outdoor environments and built a networking system that connects cameras, central server, and user interface. First, we collect camera images of parking lots and securely transmit that data to a storage server and a computer. Then, using a combination of Support Vector Machine learning techniques, we detect open spaces. Finally, the results are displayed on a user interface for parking operators to visualize the lot’s status. In 2015, we tested the ParkiT system in Rice University parking lots, achieving up to 99% accuracy for open and occupied space detection for 64 spaces.

3:10 PM– 4:10 PM Location: Hancock Victor O Santos Uceta 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Purdue University, Adobe Systems Incorporated JSpeed.io: A Javascript Powered Distributed System for High Performance Computing As the era of big data becomes main stream, the need to process large datasets and intensive calculations in a batch and streaming fashion becomes a necessity. We present a new distributed system that offers trivial setup, simple still powerful programming model, and high level of abstraction without sacrificing performance, maintainability, and scalability. We expose how emerging technologies such as Node.js helped us to implementation sandboxing techniques in private, and crowd sourced execution points with high levels of abstraction. Our system has its specific programming model, which involves the implementation of distributed algorithms as finite state machines that switch states asynchronously at each internal or external event. This event-driven automaton programming model makes it possible to create high performance/non-blocking distributed algorithms without the need of any concurrent primitive such as locks, semaphores, and mutexes, and therefore simplifying the implementation and maintainability.
