ABOUT GEM Celebrating Over 40 Years of Linking Exceptional Talent to Extraordinary Careers Founded in 1976 at the University of Notre Dame, we have operated quietly and steadily to graduate nearly 4,000 under-represented minority students who have earned Master’s and PhD degrees in the physical sciences, applied sciences, and engineering, including over 500 men and women with doctorates.

GEM VISION We envision a U.S. STEM workforce, where all are valued and empowered to realize their fullest potential through parity of access to senior levels, leading to scientific advancement that drives global innovation and maximizes social and economic impact.

GEM MISSION The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.

GEM FELLOWSHIPS GEM’s fellowship programs span the entire recruitment, retention, and professional development spectrum. GEM’s principal activity is the provision of graduate fellowships at the MS and PhD levels coupled with paid summer internships. GEM is devoted to increasing access and success in engineering and science graduate education and practice.

GEM PROGRAMS GEM offers best in class programming to encourage under-represented students who are thinking about pursing a STEM graduate program, current graduate students to ensure successful graduation, and networking opportunities for technical professionals who have gone through the GEM programming.

GEM ANNUAL BOARD MEETING AND CONFERENCE The GEM Board of Directors (representatives from member institutions) meets once a year for a formal meeting to vote on the forward strategies of the organization. University and Employer Representatives convene for a day and a half of workshops and student recruiting events before the formal roll call.

Events held at the annual conference include Plenary Sessions, Workshops and our Graduate Resource Fair. Saturday’s student-focused programming targets prospective graduate student and current GEM Fellows, and includes the GEM GRAD Lab, FFP Symposium, and the Annual GEM Technical Presentation Competition and Poster Session Finals.

GEM FELLOWSHIPS Being recognized as a GEM Fellow is a tremendous honor and distinction. Annually, less than 10% of all applicants become GEM Fellows. GEM’s target audience is underrepresented minorities (URM’s) matriculating in graduate-level engineering and applied science disciplines. GEM defines URM’s as Black/African-Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, and Native American/American Indian.

GEM’s fellowship programs span the entire recruitment, retention, and professional development spectrum. GEM’s principal activity is the provision of graduate fellowships at the MS and PhD levels coupled with paid summer internships. GEM is devoted to increasing access and success in engineering and science graduate education and practice.

MS Engineering Fellowship Program The objective of this program is to promote the benefits of a master’s degree within industry. GEM Fellows are provided practical engineering summer work experiences through an employer sponsor and a portable academic year fellowship of tuition, fees, and a stipend which may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted.

PhD Engineering / PhD Science Fellowships The objective of the PhD Engineering/Science program is to offer doctoral fellowships to underrepresented minority students who have either completed, are currently enrolled in a master’s in engineering program, or received admittance into a PhD program directly from a bachelor’s degree program.

Fellowships may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted.

GEM Full Fellowships GEM Employers sponsor highly qualified fellowship applicants to matriculate in a STEM graduate program by providing a contribution of $22,500 per student and paid internships.

GEM Associate Fellowships GEM Universities can name eligible applicants GEM Associate Fellows by providing a minimum of $16,000 in stipend plus full tuition and fees.

Industry Sponsored GEM Full Fellowship $22,500 University Sponsored GEM Associate Fellowship $16,000 Annual GEM Judging Meeting $10,000

GEM ANNUAL JUDGING MEETING The independent, judging panel is GEM’s competitive advantage. Annually, a distinguished group of PhD’s and industry leaders determine the eligibility of new GEM Fellows. Every qualified, completed GEM Fellowship application receives a review by two judges who represent faculty, industry and partner research experts.

This stellar group of judges convenes for two days to evaluate candidates. Sponsoring this meeting gives your institution the benefit of garnering collaborative research opportunities while providing philanthropic support of GEM’s mission.

The GEM GRAD Lab (Getting Ready for Advanced Degrees Laboratory) is a portable undergraduate program designed for hosting at GEM Member University campuses or GEM partners’ national conference to give under-represented STEM undergraduates information on the benefit of pursuing a graduate degree to gain access to high level research and technology careers in a highly interactive one-day event.

Fall GRAD Labs are held late September – November, and Spring GRAD Labs may be held in late March – April of each year on GEM Member universities campus as sole sponsorship events, or as regional collaborations of GEM University Members and GEM Employers.

Our largest, signature GRAD Lab will take place September 2017 during our Annual Board Meeting and Conference in New York City.

The Future Faculty and Professionals Symposium is GEM’s signature career development program for future faculty members and industry professionals. The goal of the FFP Symposium is to provide graduate students with improved research and career competitiveness, tools and metrics for greater control in career planning, and to gain access to a powerful network of peers and mentors.
