elcome to the 2016 GEM Annual Board Meeting, Conference and 40th Anniversary Gala celebration, a prestigious forum for stimulating debate on bold solutions to advance graduate education. The 2016 meeting creates a platform to raise nationwide awareness of the National GEM Consortium mission, Partners, and Fellows.

The conference is designed for advocates who want to transform how the United States educates and prepares engineering and science talent for advanced leadership careers, particularly among our nation’s native born, historically underrepresented ethnic groups. We have carefully planned a program that allows all attendees to engage in topics that are of interest to them as well as receive critical information on current GEM operations and processes.

Juan E. Gilbert, PhD

(Host, Primary Sponsor) Director, MIT Lincoln Laboratory President, GEM Board of Directors Dr. Eric D. Evans was appointed Director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory in July 2006.

As Director, he is responsible for the Laboratory’s strategic direction and overall technical and administrative operations. Dr. Evans is currently the Vice Chair of the Defense Science Board (DSB). As a member of the DSB since 2009, he has served on several studies, including as co-leader of Task Forces on Improvised Explosive Devices and Cyber Security and Reliability in a Digital Cloud. He is an advisor to the U.S. Strategic Command Senior Advisory Group, a member of the Massport Security Advisory Council, and President of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science. He previously served as a member of the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Nuclear Mission Committee. Dr. Evans is a Fellow of the IEEE and an author of over 45 referenced journal articles and conference papers. In 1996, he and his co-authors received the M. Barry Carlton Award from the IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society for a paper on advanced radar signal processing. Dr. Evans holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University.

The Banks Preeminence Chair in Human-Centered Computing and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department University of Florida Dr. Juan E. Gilbert is The Banks Preeminence Chair in Human-Centered Computing and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department at the University of Florida where he leads the Human Experience Research Lab. Dr. Gilbert is the GEM Coordinator at the University of Florida. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science, National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies, an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Dr. Gilbert was recently named one of the 50 most important African-Americans in Technology.

Robert H. Bishop, PhD

Jaffus Hardrick, EdD

Dean of Engineering University of South Florida

Dr. Robert H. Bishop, P.E., dean of the College of Engineering at the University of South Florida, is a distinguished teaching professor and researcher, and a specialist in the applications of systems and control theory to modern engineering products. His current research involves development of advanced spacecraft navigation methods, He has initiated several nanosatellite projects. He is the co-author of one of the world’s leading undergraduate textbooks in control theory and authored/co-authored over 125 journal and conference papers. Prior to USF, Bishop was dean of Marquette’s engineering college after working as a professor and department chair at The University of Texas at Austin. Bishop earned his Ph.D. (1990) at Rice University in Electrical and Computer Engineering, his M.S. (1980) and B.S. (1979) in aerospace engineering at Texas A&M University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Fellow of the American Astronautical Association.

Vice Provost for Student Access and Success Florida International University Dr. Jaffus Hardrick has served in education administration, spearheading growth, innovation, and performance. He has contributed through his service on the boards of the Association of Public & Land-grant Universities, College Board, College & University Professional Association for Human Resources, Chronicle of Higher Education, Society of Human Resource Management, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, 100 Black Men organization, and more. Dr. Hardrick serves as Vice Provost, Student Access & Success as well as Vice President of Human Resources at Florida International University, the nation’s fourth largest University. He is responsible for strategic leadership impacting student success, academics, policy, governance, donor development, and community relations. Prior to FIU, Dr. Hardrick served as Assistant Vice President Human Resources and Assistant Provost Academic Affairs at Baylor University. He earned a Bachelor’s from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, a Master’s from Prairie View A&M University, and a Doctorate from Baylor University.

(Moderator) Dean of Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology Dr. Gary S. May is the Dean and Southern Company Chair of the College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His field of research is computer-aided manufacturing of integrated circuits. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1985, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988 and 1991, respectively.

Leshelle Rodriguez May Development Manager CNN - Turner Broadcasting

LeShelle May joined the CNN Internet Technology Group in 1996 as a Senior System/Software Developer. She is currently leading a team on the CNNgo launch, which is CNN’s integration of CNN TV and Web. She received her B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Boston University and M.S. in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988 and 1989 respectively.

Johney Green, Jr., PhD

Division Director Oak Ridge National Laboratory Johney Green, Jr., PhD serves as director of the Energy and Transportation Science division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, conducting automotive research focused on engine and vehicle experiments, combustion modeling, and the control of combustion instabilities.

He earned his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Barbara Whye

(Moderator) Executive Director of Global Strategy and External Alliances, Global Diversity and Inclusion Intel Corporation Barbara Whye is the Executive Director of Strategy and External Alliances in Intel’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Office. In this role, Barbara leads the strategy and execution of prioritized programs and pipeline investments to fully execute and deliver tangible results against Intel’s Diversity and Inclusion goals. She is driven to improve access to technology careers and retention by creating opportunities that allow all to feel welcomed, challenged and valued. Barbara’s portfolio has a huge emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) awareness, ecosystem development and retention in science and technology careers.

She has held various leadership and project engineering roles at Intel over the past 20 years in TMG, IT and Corp Affairs Group.

She has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, an MBA and currently pursuing a PhD in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology at Arizona State University.

Lakecia Gunter

Director of Consumer Desktop Segment Marketing Intel Corporation Lakecia Gunter is currently the Director of Desktop Partner Marketing and Engagement in the Desktop Client Platforms Group. Previously she was the Chief of Staff of Intel Labs and Technical Assistant to WenHann Wang, Director and Corporate Vice President of Intel Labs.

In this role, she assists the director and his staff in setting the agenda and establishing technology priorities for both Intel Labs and the company. Prior to her current position, Lakecia was the Validation, Emulation, and FIVR manager in the Platform Validation Engineering organization of the Intel Architecture group, where she was responsible for delivering Intel’s 3rd and 4th Generation Core Processors to the marketplace. In 2012, Lakecia and her team were awarded the Intel Software Quality award for developing and delivering a high quality CPU functional validation tool, used to validate and ensure the overall quality of all microprocessor products produced by the corporation. Lakecia earned an MSEE from Georgia Institute of Technology and a BSCpE from University of South Florida.

Patricia Lopez, PhD

Senior Platform Applications Engineer Intel Corporation Dr. Patty Lopez is a Senior Platform Applications Engineer at Intel Corporation, working with customers to deliver Xeon server chip solutions that power high end data centers and mission critical applications. Prior to joining Intel in 2008, she spent 19 years as an Imaging Scientist for Hewlett Packard, creating and transferring technology in imaging into scanner, camera, and allin-one products. She has released over fifty products and holds seven imaging patents. She earned her BS (with honors), MS, and PhD in Computer Science from New Mexico State University (NMSU). Dr. Lopez received the Society of Women Engineer’s 2016 Advocating Women in Engineering Award, and the HENAAC/ Great Minds in STEM Community Service Award in 2010. Her research interests include CS education, E-textiles, and wearable computing. Her volunteer efforts are focused on building the STEM pipeline for K-16 and beyond, and creating an inclusive organizational culture in the workplace.

Joan Tafoya

Vice President, GEM Alumni Association Lead Operations, Drone Business Unit Intel Corporation Joan recently joined Intel’s New Technology Group, leading operations and capacity scaling for our new UAS (Drone) business. Joan’s previous role was in the Internet of Things business unit as a Senior Principal Engineer.

In this role, she was leading a cross-Intel team improving the user experience and defining usages and requirements for our IOT analytic software solutions that make factories, buildings, retail, transportation, and homes more efficient and intelligent.

Joan served as Senior Principal Engineer and Director of Supply Planning Operations in the Customer Fulfillment, Planning and Logistics Group. Her responsibilities included leading a team of 600 employees in 15+ countries to align Intel’s product supply with customer demand. As the director, Joan managed all of the company’s build plans for its $30B+ world-wide factory network.

Aligned with Intel’s active sponsorship, Joan is the Vice President of the Alumni Association of GEM. Joan holds a BS in Computer Science from Arizona State University and an MS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Howard G.Adams, PhD Dr. Howard G. Adams is Founder and President of H.G. Adams & Associates, Inc.; a Norfolk, VA based company that provides consulting and training in the areas of mentoring, student development, and leadership. Adams has written, lectured and consulted extensively on developing people in both academic and workplace settings.

Howard is the author or co-authored of fifteen self help guides and handbooks. In his 2002 book, Get Up With Something On Your Mind: Lessons for Navigating Life, Adams offers some essential for living a successful and productive life. In Family Wisdom, 2006, he traces his ancestral family roots from the 1700 to the present. His latest book, Career Management 101: A Primer for Career and Life Goal Planning, 2008, provides critical insight, skills, and tools for planning and managing one’s career and life. From 1978 to 1994 Adams served as Executive Director of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM). Prior to joining GEM, Adams served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Norfolk State University. Adams holds a B.Sc. from Norfolk State University, M.S. from Virginia State University Ph.D. from Syracuse University.

Marvin Andujar (GEM Fellow) Marvin Andujar is a Ph.D. candidate in Human-Centered Computing and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Florida. Marvin is also a GEM Fellow, a Generation Google and an Intel Scholar.

His research concentration is on Affective Brain-Computer Interfaces, where he focuses on the understanding of the user’s affective and cognitive state during human-machine interaction.

Catherine Amelink, PhD Dr. Catherine Amelink, serves as Director of Graduate Programs and Assessment, College of Engineering at Virginia Tech.

She is responsible for assessment and evaluation of several educational programs based in the Dean’s Office and facilitating graduate programs as it relates to recruitment and retention of graduate students. In 1997 Catherine received her B.A. in History and Secondary Education from James Madison University. She received a Master’s of Education from James Madison University in 1998 and her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2003. Catherine’s collective experience provides us with a background that includes positions that have played an active role at the college, university, and state level. Her research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Engineering Education. She is an affiliate faculty in the Higher Education program in the School of Education and the Department of Engineering Education.

Sharnnia Artis, PhD Sharnnia Artis is the Assistant Dean of Access and Inclusion for the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. In this role, she is responsible for programs at the pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate levels to facilitate the recruitment, retention, and overall success of students from traditionally underrepresented groups in engineering and information and computer sciences. Dr. Artis has 18 years of experience working with education and outreach programs in engineering. Prior to joining UC Irvine, she was the Education and Outreach Director for the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, Dr. Artis spent nine years at Virginia Tech providing program and student support for the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity and has four years of industry and government experience as a Human Factors Engineer. Dr. Artis holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Corey Baker, PhD (GEM Alum) Corey Baker, Ph.D., is a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Baker’s research interests include software defined, mobile ad hoc, and delay tolerant networks. Corey has a pending patent for his research in delay tolerant networks as the current CEO and cofounder of 1 Degree Technologies LLC. Dr. Baker was a recipient of several graduate fellowship, including the GEM Ph.D Fellowship. He received a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from San Jose State University, a M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. Corey has served on the board of directors of the National Society of Black Engineers as a two term National Treasurer and CFO. Dr. Baker is a former blogger for GEM, and wrote about topics that promoted success amongst STEM graduate students, including securing graduate school funding, navigating Ph.D. programs, and publishing.

Robin Brewer (GEM Fellow) Robin Brewer is a PhD candidate in a joint computer science and communication studies doctoral program at Northwestern University. Her research lies at the intersection of accessibility and social computing in HCI. For her dissertation research she designs voice-based interfaces for offline populations to better enable online communication and engagement. Robin has an M.S. in HumanCentered Computing from UMBC and a B.S. in Computer Science from University of Maryland, College Park. She is also a Segal Design Institute fellow, a GEM fellow, and a Google UNCF scholar.

Helen Duong Helen Duong is currently the Recruitment, Outreach and Admissions Coordinator for Graduate School at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. Duong has over ten years experience in the field of higher education and is especially passionate about making higher education accessible to everyone.

Shameeka Emanuel (GEM Alum) Shameeka Emanuel’s career spans almost 10 years at Intel Corporation where she has held a variety of positions. After completing her BS degree in Systems and Computer Science at Howard University and her MS in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University where she was selected as an Intel MS GEM Fellow, Shameeka was hired into Intel’s premier one-year engineering rotation program. Upon completion of the program, Shameeka started within Intel’s Server Design group where she held various positions. During this time she worked to validate four processors in the Xeon family in various capacities (pre-silicon and post-silicon). Her most recent position in that group was on the memory controller validation team where her area of expertise was RAS features. Shameeka was involved with recruiting activities for this group for many years and just last year took on the new role as the Diversity Scholar Program Manager in the Global Talent Organization College Division.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Christan Grant, PhD Christan Grant, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. His research interests include the development and use of databases along with text analytics to create novel systems for answering difficult questions. His work has been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship award in the area of “Database Information Retrieval and Web Search”. He was also awarded the Florida Georgia LSAMP Bridge to Doctorate Fellowship and a diversity award from the College of Engineering. Christan has served as an external editor reviewer for ACM SIGMOD, ACM VLDB, ACM CIKM, and IEEE ICDE conferences. He holds several publications and patents from internships at IBM Almaden Research Center.

He completed his Bachelors of Science, Masters of Science, and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Florida where he was a member of the Data Science Research lab.

Shanise Kent Shanise Kent is the director of Diversity Programs and Initiatives in the Thomas J Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University.

She serves as the chief diversity officer for the Watson School, tasked with increasing the number of female and historically underrepresented minority students, faculty and staff.

Her duties include serving as the director of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), co-PI of LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate, and co-PI of the Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP). Dr. Kent originally joined the Binghamton University campus in 2007 as coordinator of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. She earned her bachelor of arts in political science, master of business administration, and juris doctor degrees from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Johney Green, Jr., PhD (GEM Alum) Johney Green, Jr., PhD serves as director of the Energy and Transportation Science division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dr. Green joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1995 conducting automotive research focused on engine and vehicle experiments, combustion modeling, and the control of combustion instabilities. During the course of that research, he joined a team working with the Ford Motor Company seeking ways to extend exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) limits in diesel engines to simultaneously reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. The following year, he continued this research collaboration, working on-site at Ford’s Scientific Research Laboratory on modeling and experimental research for advanced diesel engines designed for light-duty vehicles. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 2015, Johney was elected fellow of SAE International, the professional society of mobility engineers. He has received several awards during his career and holds two U.S. patents in combustion science.

John “Jack” Lesko, PhD As the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering Dr. Lesko provides guidance and leadership to the College’s programs in graduate research and education.

His office provides support to faculty in developing research efforts by helping them to identify possible funding agencies, by coordinating faculty groups for multidisciplinary research proposals, by negotiating cost sharing for proposals when necessary, and by coordinating negotiations for research contracts between the college and outside agencies. He oversees budgetary review of internal funding programs such as the SCHEV Equipment Trust Fund, ASPIRES, Instructional Fee Scholarships, and the Dean’s Fellowships. For the graduate program, his responsibilities include recommendations for new graduate degree programs, coordinating approval of new graduate courses and recommending approval for issues affecting individual graduate students. Lesko holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

He brings a track record of success in complex program management, global systems/application migration, process transformation and financial management in the General Business, Automotive, Health and Learning industries. Mr. Mingo’s technical and executive experiences span applications management services and services practice leadership; mainframe and PC hardware systems development, test, release to manufacturing and field support and web-based integrated e-commerce solution development and global deployment/ maintenance. Mr. Mingo is currently Vice President, Application Services in IBM’s Global Business Services Division. He is the North America Delivery Leader for the IBM Account; IBM’s internal application development team supporting the Chief Information Officer. Alan leads a global team of approximately 4000 resources in 21 countries worldwide supporting over 2600 applications.

Mr. Mingo received Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Computer Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1984 and 1985 respectively.

La’Tonia Stiner-Jones, PhD As Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs at The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering, Dr. Stiner-Jones’ responsibilities include oversight of graduate education and issues affecting graduate students at the college level.

She develops and manages partnerships and agreements with external engineering programs and organizations. She serves as the primary liaison to intra-and inter-university colleges and units. She oversees the strategic recruitment of graduate students with a focus on increasing diversity. She is also responsible for the development and implementation of professional development opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. She works to identify and pursue external funds to support fellowships and graduate student support services and allocates and awards fellowships. Dr. Stiner-Jones received her Bachelor’s and PhD. degrees from Wright State University in Dayton, OH and her MBA from Capital University. After completing her PhD in Biomedical Sciences, she went on to complete her first postdoctoral research position in the field of neuroimmunology at The Ohio State University.

Anderson D. Prewitt, PhD (GEM Alum) Dr. Anderson D. Prewitt earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Central Florida, where his specialization was Electromagnetics. He also has a Master’s in Materials Engineering and a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Florida where his dissertation work focused on the Electronic Properties of Energy Converting Materials.

Anderson is the founder of Prewitt Solutions a technology consulting firm, and he has conducted research related to various topics including Renewable Energy, Electromechanical Sensor Systems, and Applied Computational Data Analysis. Currently he’s conducting research with the WAMI Group at the University of South Florida related to advanced additive manufacturing of wireless devices via 3D printing using novel materials, methods, and modeling techniques..

Effective mentor/ protégé relationships are those built on principles like flexibility, commitment, trust and mutual respect.

An effective mentoring relationship requires both the mentor and protégé to agree on specific goals and to work on ways of achieving them. A good mentoring relationship is one in which protégé can be independent, but knows there is a source of effective advice and constructive feedback. In this workshop, participants and presenter will interactively examine the role of mentoring and how mentoring relationships can be developed in graduate school and extended beyond. The presenter will identify effective mentor traits, how to select one or more mentors, and how to foster a dynamic and productive relationship between mentor and protégé.

GRAD Lab GRAD Lab is GEM’s signature programmatic offering for undergraduates! Launched at the 30th Anniversary Conference in June 2006 to outstanding participant reviews, GRAD Lab offers underrepresented students exposure to the benefits of research and technology careers in a highly interactive one day event. In 2016, we celebrate 10 Years of engaging underrepresented students in STEM graduate degree opportunities through GRAD Lab participation on GEM Member University campus and at diversity partner national conferences.

Speakers may range from current graduate students to senior managers to faculty and senior administrators. They are selected from diverse communities and disciplines to present on the following topics: “Why Graduate School” “How to Prepare for Graduate School” “How to Fund Graduate School”, and “Voices From the Field: Real Life Research and Internship Experiences” GRAD Lab encourages young people of color to consider graduate engineering or science education and applying for the GEM fellowship. Future Faculty and Professionals (FFP) The Future Faculty and Professionals (FFP) Symposium is GEM’s signature career development program for junior and future faculty members as well as industry professionals. Designed to create self-supporting networks FFP brings together senior faculty, managers, and researchers to network and mentor underrepresented students making vital decisions about the remainder of the graduate school experience and post-graduation careers. Particular emphasis is placed on current doctoral students interested in pursuing faculty careers at colleges and universities.

The goal of the FFP Symposium is to provide graduate students and junior faculty with: Improved research and career competitiveness, tools and metrics for greater control in career planning, a powerful network of peers, and greater confidence in mentoring all students, especially members of underserved populations.

Technical Presentation Competition & Poster Session The National GEM Consortium hosts an annual technical presentation competition to provide an opportunity for students to add a formal presentation to their curriculum vitas and to showcase the research and level of technical internships of our GEM Fellows and students conducting research at GEM Member Universities. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professionals, like all professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. This competition is designed to emphasize the value of an ability to conduct research, engage in a high level of technology and to deliver oral presentations. Student also have the option to present their research via a poster display presentation.

How to Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks as a Student Scholar Students have a number of roles. Whether a graduate or undergraduate student, a participant in a research experience or on an internship, various roles and responsibilities are part of the territory. Often we must perform well academically while working as an intern or perhaps while working as a researcher in a lab.

Generally in life there are often setbacks that we must overcome or deal with. This workshop focuses on how do we deal with life’s setbacks and come out on top. What happens when you have a bad semester as an undergrad or grad student? What do you do when you get a bad start to a research experience or the first half of your internship doesn’t go so well? This workshop will give participants the chance to learn and develop strategies to overcome these types of setbacks and “finish strong” even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Participants will gain knowledge, get real world advice, and will participate in case studies. Next Exit…Graduate School: A GPS for How to Apply to Graduate School Preparation for graduate school can begin as early as your freshmen year or as late as your senior year or after you graduate.

How to Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks as a Student Scholar Students have a number of roles. Whether a graduate or undergraduate student, a participant in a research experience or on an internship, various roles and responsibilities are part of the territory. Often we must perform well academically while working as an intern or perhaps while working as a researcher in a lab.

Generally in life there are often setbacks that we must overcome or deal with. This workshop focuses on how do we deal with life’s setbacks and come out on top. What happens when you have a bad semester as an undergrad or grad student? What do you do when you get a bad start to a research experience or the first half of your internship doesn’t go so well? This workshop will give participants the chance to learn and develop strategies to overcome these types of setbacks and “finish strong” even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Participants will gain knowledge, get real world advice, and will participate in case studies. Specific topics will include personal stories and unique experiences on how to “bounce back” from: -Academic Struggles - Having a bad semester (or year) and developing a plan to finish strong -Work/ Internship Problems - Recovering from a bad first impression and “adding value” -Research Troubles - When your research doesn’t go how you planned (Hint: It NEVER Does!)

When Faculty Say X, But They Mean Y This workshop will be a discussion on interpreting the unspoken rules of being a PhD student. This is a workshop targeted towards first and second year graduate students. Marvin Andujar (PhD Candidate and previous Intel GEM Fellow) and I (previous Adobe GEM Fellow), both senior-level PhD candidates, will co-lead the workshop and will first present on a few of our experiences in interpreting feedback from our advisors and other faculty members. We will then open the discussion for others to ask questions and share their experiences. This workshop will serve as a safe environment for students to ask questions, provide comments, and learn how to navigate the first few years of graduate school. It is an adaption of a panel hosted at UMBC each year (http://my.umbc.edu/groups/gsa/posts/41460) but will be presented from the perspective of graduate students.

The Importance of Mentoring

Effective mentor/ protégé relationships are those built on principles like flexibility, commitment, trust and mutual respect.

An effective mentoring relationship requires both the mentor and protégé to agree on specific goals and to work on ways of achieving them. A good mentoring relationship is one in which protégé can be independent, but knows there is a source of effective advice and constructive feedback. In this workshop, participants and presenter will interactively examine the role of mentoring and how mentoring relationships can be developed in graduate school and extended beyond. The presenter will identify effective mentor traits, how to select one or more mentors, and how to foster a dynamic and productive relationship between mentor and protégé.

Apatira, Damilola 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Georgia Institute of Technology, Intel Corporation Proof of Concept: Automating Parametrized Circuit Layout Generation using Python Industry recognized analog circuit layout design remains largely an art form, requiring lengthy immersion time (years) to become proficient. Depending on the complexity of the design, in reference to board layers/routing and analog components constraints, the analog layout design turnaround time is unbounded. The objective of this API prototype is to demonstrate and explore reduction of design effort with respect to design complexity and construction time for the circuit layout design stage. This proof of concept explores creation of an application program interface (API) capable of intermediating with an existing schematic generator, parametrizing the schematic’s specifications from the generator and lastly presenting a visual representation of the retrieved specifications. Using the programming language Python, an intermediary API prototype is built to emulate a layout generator that automates component placement for a printed circuit board layout and achieve a visual render of the parameterized coordinates of the schematic specifications.

Parallelizing finite state algorithms on graphics processing units (GPUs) would benefit many areas of NLP. We introduce a GPU implementation of automata algorithms achieving significant speedups over the current baselines.

Block 3: 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM | 1:50 PM | Presentation | Star Astorga, Angello 2016 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, Adobe Systems Incorporated Optimizing the PatchMatch Algorithm in the Halide Image Processing just like You Imagined it Image processing pipelines are typically data intensive programs composed of sophisticated dependencies and computations. It is crucial to optimize these pipelines for acceptable performance on various platforms that make heavy use of images. However, this is a difficult task that requires extensive domain knowledge of the target platform and code optimization techniques. The Halide image processing language has proven to be effective at generating high-performing image processing pipelines. It also allows for portability of the implementation without compromising performance as Halide includes an optimizing compiler that synthesizes implementations of an image processing pipeline for different hardware architectures. In the context of images editing tools such as Adobe’s Photoshop, the performance and portability of implementations of algorithms behind the content-aware fill feature is especially important.

The goal of this research is to produce a halide implementation that closely 26 |

estimates the PatchMatch algorithm that is used in Photoshop’s contentaware fill feature.

Block 3: 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM | 1:50 PM | Presentation | La Gorce Azocar, Alejandro 2015 GEM Ph.D. Fellow, Northwestern University Preliminary Psychophysical Analysis of Ankle Interaction Stiffness Many assistive technologies, including exoskeletons and powered orthoses, are being developed using engineering principles that closely mimic human biomechanics. Joint impedance, which represents the behavior of a joint as a stiffness, damping, and inertia, is often used to describe these biomechanics. Currently, the appropriate joint stiffness for assistive technologies is unknown, and it is unclear how errors in joint stiffness applied by these technologies can be perceived. The purpose of this work is to determine the minimum detectable change in interaction stiffness that can be perceived with the human ankle. The intent of this work is to provide a target for the accuracy required by ankle exoskeletons that actively vary these properties.

One way of authenticating a device through hardware is to use the fabrication anomalies, which are random and unclonable. This mechanism is called a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF). PUF is a concept that gained popularity since the past decade, when researchers started taking advantage of the randomness of electrical signals in order to build a unique authentication block. This survey will show the state-of-the-art devices that are currently investigated as PUFs. The different technologies are compared by taking into account reproducibility, uniqueness, randomness, area, scalability, and compatibility with CMOS. Bednar, Dominic 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, University of Michigan, Oak Ridge National Laboratory The Intersection of Energy and Justice: Exploring the Spatial, Racial and Socioeconomic Patterns of Residential Heating Affordability, Consumption and Efficiency in Wayne County, Michigan Within the Detroit metropolitan area, some residents are crippled by the surmounting utility costs making it an arduous endeavor to adequately regulate temperatures in their homes for a reasonable cost given their income. Disparities in household income and energy affordability have been well studied; however, research on differences in the relationship between race, place and energy is lacking. This research explores these relationships using data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS). Regression models were developed to predict annual heating energy consumption and energy use intensity (EUI). From these models, data from the U.S. Census Bureau were used to create small area estimates of mean annual heating energy consumption and EUI at the census block group level. Results were mapped using geographic information systems (GIS) to identify spatial patterns of energy burden, consumption and efficiency in Wayne County, Michigan.

Dates, Robert 2016 GEM Master’s Fellow, North Carolina State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Automatic Speech Recognition for Adobe Mobile Applications The use of automatic speech recognition is gradually gaining adoption across mobile applications. Direct spoken voice commands have the potential to greatly increase the productivity of designers using Adobe mobile applications. Our goal is to make voice interaction available to Adobe customers without the use of a commercial speech API. In this project, using the open-source Kaldi/CMU Sphinx speech server technology, we develop a mobile application that communicates with a custom Adobe speech server. We then integrate this technology into the existing Photoshop Fix mobile application for selected use cases. Bio: Robert Dates is a masters’ student in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University and an Adobe GEM Fellow.

He obtained his dual bachelor’s degree at North Carolina State University in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He is focusing on mobile development.

Loretta Cheeks 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, Arizona State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Discovering News Frames: Exploring Text, Content, and Concepts in Online News Sources to Address Water Insecurity in the Southwest Region The Internet is a major source of online news content. Current efforts to evaluate online news content, including text, story line and sources is limited by the use of small-scale manual techniques that are time consuming and dependent on human judgments. This article explores the use of machine learning algorithms and mathematical techniques for Internet-scale data mining and semantic discovery of news content that will enable researchers to mine, analyze and visualize large-scale datasets.

This research has the potential to inform the integration and application of data mining to address real-world socio-environmental issues, including water insecurity in the Southwestern United States. This paper establishes a formal definition of framing and proposes an approach for the discovery of distinct patterns that characterize prominent frames. Our experimental evaluation shows that the proposed process is an effective and efficient semi-supervised machine learning method to inform data mining for inferring classification.

With this project we want to measure the predictive impact of any feature on any specific metric across all offers. For example, if the state of residency is the driving variable in user conversion we would like to know which state is actually the driving variable and so on. The second part of the project plans on learning which segment of the population has the most significant impact on a given metric.

Here I describe the fundamental idea behind the Finite Pointset Theory as well as how this method is useful for glass tube manufacturing. Using this model, I will show the deformation of the catenary in the glass tubing process and validate the model with experimental records. This work is done under Corning Incorporated Science & Technology division.

Crawford, Chris S 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Florida, Intel Corporation Using a Visual Programing Language to Interact with Visualizations of Electroencephalogram Signals As jobs begin to seek hybrid skill sets from employees more frequently, interdisciplinary learning will become more important. This work presents a tool, which provides a novel interdisciplinary learning approach that merges math, computer science, and physiology that could create engaging experiences for learners. The presented tool obtains neurophysiological measurements of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using a BrainComputer Interface (BCI). This data can be used to understand the cognitive and affective states such as fatigue, cognitive workload, engagement, and others. Using an interface equipped with a visual programing language (VPL) enables users to interact with and visualize

Fields, Francisco 2016 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Notre Dame, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Detecting threats to biofuels: Quantifying Septoria infection in Populus Populus exhibits many advantageous biological qualities that make it attractive as a biofuel feedstock. Unfortunately, the fungus Septoria musiva, or Sphaerulina musiva, causes leaf spots and stem cankers on infected Populus. The infection threatens the life of the tree and the production of biofuel. Current research hopes to use resistant trees in an effort to prevent plantation failure. In order examine the relationship between Septoria burden and resistance profile, qPCR was used to quantify Septoria colonization in Populus deltoides and Populus trichocarpa in the early stages of infection. Preliminary data hints at a deeper relationship between Septoria burden and the mechanisms of resistance between Populus species. This study will aid in the selection of Populus genotypes that resist Septoria colonization for the establishment of successful biofuel feedstock plantations.

Block 2: 11:10 AM - 12:00 PM |11:25 AM | Presentation | Star Garcia, Francisco 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Massachusetts - Amherst, Adobe Systems Incorporated Body Dynamics Optimization by Self-Demonstration Humans are particularly efficient at acquiring new skills. Many of those, such as grabbing or pushing an object, can be achieved by carefully controlled movements. There are some skills, however, in which making efficient use of the dynamics of the body becomes crucial for completing a task. An example of this would be jumping or hitting a groundstroke in tennis. In this work, we present a framework for combining these ideas to autonomously learn dynamically efficient policies. Our approach relies on learning from self-demonstration; by learning how to sequence existing controllers via the Control Basis (CB), the robot is able to provide a demonstration to itself, which is then optimized by a parameterized policy representation using Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs). We present two experiments on a box-throwing domain, in which the performance of the task is highly dependent on effective use of the system dynamics. Our experiments show that given an appropriate objective function to optimize, our framework for learning from self-demonstration is significantly more efficient than those obtained by using either CB or DMPs alone.

Block 3: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | 2:35 PM | Presentation | La Gorce Gonzalez-Santini, Nomar 2016 GEM PhD Fellow, Michigan State University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Optimum DC-Link Capacitor Size for Electric Vehicle Wireless Chargers In this study, an equation for the dc-link capacitor in a wireless power transfer system for electric vehicle battery charging is derived. Based on this equation, the optimum capacitance for any wireless charger topology can be obtained. This study expanded the design guideline not only for the system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, but for anyone working in the area of electric vehicle’s wireless chargers.

Block 4: 2:45 PM - 4:35 PM | 4:20 PM | Presentation | Star Grady, Michael 2010 GEM PhD Fellow, University of South Florida, Corning Incorporated Towards the Realization of Human Core Body Temperature Extraction using a Standalone Microwave Radiometric Model This presentation overviews the technical advances made toward the realization of a wireless thermometer able to non-invasively, wirelessly, and accurately predict sub-skin human core body temperature with an accuracy of 0.1°C. A standalone microwave radiometric model, used to resolve subsurface temperature, is experimentally validated. The extracted sub-skin temperature of a human body tissue phantom experimental setup is predicted with a 0.3% difference from measured temperature probes 28 |

positioned within the phantom setup. The modeled versus measured data agreement suggests that the presented modelling approach is indeed a viable method for accurate subsurface human core body temperature extraction.

Technical contributions are achieved for the antenna design, the modelling of the radiative transfer within the body, and also for the tissue phantom development.

1:40 PM - 2:40 PM | Poster | Ocean I Foyer Holguin, Stefany Y Current PhD Student Laser-activated carbon nanoparticles for intracellular drug delivery Targeting of drugs into cells is essential for the advancement of drug delivery, and more broadly for improved healthcare. When carbon black nanoparticles (CBNP) in suspension with cancer cells and extracellular molecules are irradiated by nanosecond-pulsed laser light, high uptake and cell viability are observed1,2. Laser-irradiated carbon catalyzes short-range thermal & mechanical effects and long-range acoustic stresses, phenomena called transient nanoparticle energy transduction (TNET). Long-range effects were investigated via acoustic and in vitro evaluation of CBNP, multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes. Results indicate that since bioeffects do not correlate with acoustic behavior, acoustical phenomena are not the primary TNET mechanism. Short-range effects were studied by altering CBNP-cell spacing via CBNP concentration in vitro. Initial results indicate that bioeffects saturate at all concentrations tested, and that there is a small CBNP-cell spacing threshold necessary for delivery. These results suggest that short-range stresses are fundamental to TNET. Block 3: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | 2:35 PM | Presentation | Star Iaia, Vito 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of California – Los Angeles, MIT Lincoln Laboratory Superconducting Quantum Bits and Resonators Quantum computing is an emerging concept in advanced computing that utilizes the rules of quantum mechanics to outperform classical algorithms. Quantum bits, or ‘qubits’, are the basic logical elements that play a role analogous to the transistor in these systems. Qubits made up of superconducting elements have been used to demonstrate simple quantum computations, but the performance limitations of such circuits are still unknown. Superconducting resonators can be used to probe the material limitations of quantum coherence in these systems through analysis of device quality factor. We utilize measurements of superconducting resonator ensembles to study superconducting circuit fabrication and design considerations with the goal of increasing qubit coherence times.

Units of currency called bitcoins are used to store and transmit value among participants in the bitcoin network. Bitcoin users communicate with each other using the bitcoin protocol primarily via the Internet, although other transport networks can also be used.”

One challenge inhibiting bitcoin from becoming more widely used is the difficult learning curve. The purpose of this project was to create a desktop application that would serve as a bitcoin wallet. The goal was to incorporate user-centered design techniques to create an application that would help users feel more comfortable using the cutting edge technology. Various user research methods were used to determine the key features needed for the application that would not overwhelm a novice user, while still being of user to a more advanced user.

Unlike role based access control, which is commonly used today, ABAC supports access decisions based on the attributes about the user, resources to which access is being requested, and environmental context of an access request (such as time of day or geographic location). Functionalities were integrated into the build in order to provide better privacy and security than traditional access control methods.

Nuclear warhead stockpiles have a dynamic life cycle and both procedural and technological approaches are necessary to design an effective monitoring regime. The goal of this research was to design and develop a warhead monitoring simulation to verify agreements to limit and reduce strategic warhead stockpiles. The simulation outputted metrics about treaty accountable items (TAIs) and compared different concepts of operations to be used to design an optimal monitoring regime.

Block 4: 2:45 PM - 4:05 PM | 3:05 PM | Presentation | Star Lowery, Adam 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, Brookhaven National Laboratory Cryofixation of Hydrated, Biological Samples for Correlative Imaging The Submicron Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy beamline (SRX) at the National Synchrotron Light Source-II allows for the use of X-ray fluorescence microscopy to qualify and quantify trace metals located within hydrated, biological samples. However, the ionizing radiation from a synchrotron beamline is detrimental to the characterization of the metals. Cryofixation is a common way to mitigate the damaging effect of the radiation, however if ice crystals form within a frozen sample their rigid structures could destroy the sample as well. In this presentation, I will outline how we retrofitted a commercial plunge freezer to enable us to vitrify our hydrated, biological samples so that we could keep them protected within a synchrotron beamline. Changes to the plunge freezer included designing a magnetic sample mount and a cryostat transfer apparatus. With the alterations made to the setup, our samples are maintained within their metabolic state, which permitted correlative imaging of the samples.

Marshall, Jermaine 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Notre Dame, Adobe Systems Incorporated Emotional-Aware Truth Discovery in Social Sensing Applications Social sensing has emerged as a new application paradigm of cyber-physical systems where a large crowd of social sensors (humans or devices on their behalf ) spontaneously report observations about the physical environment.

A problem in social sensing applications lies in ascertaining the correctness of the reported observations. We refer to this problem as truth discovery.

While significant efforts have been made to address the truth discovery problem, an important aspect of the problem has not been fully explored: how to deal with emotional claims. A common assumption made in the previous works is that all claims are assumed to be either true or false).

However, unlike physical sensors, humans are more likely to incorporate personal emotions and sentiments in the reported observations, which can lead to inaccurate results. The evaluation results showed that our new scheme outperforms all compared baselines and improves the truth discovery accuracy in social sensing applications.

Block 4: 2:45 PM - 4:05 PM | 3:35 PM | Presentation | La Gorce Martinez, Julio 2016 GEM PhD Fellow, Stanford University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Offline Evaluation of Recommendation Systems Providing “good” recommendations are the ultimate goal of a Recommender System (RS), however, to date, the most widespread use of RSs rely on the accuracy of predicted user ratings. Consequently, the recommendations made are the highest rated items. The implicit assumption that the user is always interested in the highest rated items may affect the quality of the recommendation list. Incorporating goals that consider the novelty, utility, and diversity could considerably improve the quality of the RS. Moreover, characteristics of items such as trends and popularity can be derived from the data and factored into the ratings. The goal of this project is to produce recommendations by using evaluation metrics for RSs which incorporate the aforementioned evaluation goals. We are currently exploring methods to have different ranked lists based on the above. These lists will serve as input to a voting algorithm to arrive at a final ranking.

Block 4: 2:45 PM - 4:05 PM | 3:20 PM | Presentation | La Gorce Messan, Komi 2013 GEM PhD Fellow, Arizona State University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Dispersal effect on honey bee colonies under infestation by varroa mites The abrupt decline of honeybee worldwide is often associated with the varroa destructor. Regularly, bees are prone to rob other colonies for resources especially during dearth when nectar shortage occur. Mites could hence attach to honeybee foragers robbing high infested colonies. In this research, we propose a two patch honeybee-mite model that take into account the parasitic interaction between honeybee and mite and also the foraging of bees between the two patches. The findings resulting from our studies include: (a) Large value of dispersal may destabilize the dynamics leading to extinction of species. (b) Intermediate dispersal rate may have stabilizing effect. (c) An increase in dispersal rate yield a growth of the varroa population which in return have a negative feedback on honeybee population. Our results may provide a great insight into the effect of foraging and the link between the Colony Collapse Disorder and mite infestation.

Odukomaiya, Adewale 2013 GEM Master Fellow/PhD Graduate Student, Georgia Institute of Technology, Oak Ridge National Laboratory THERMAL ANALYSIS OF NEAR-ISOTHERMAL COMPRESSED GAS ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM Due to the increasing generation capacity of intermittent renewable electricity sources and an electrical grid ill-equipped to handle the mismatch between electricity generation and use, the need for advanced energy storage technologies will continue to grow. Currently, pumped-storage hydroelectricity and compressed air energy storage are used for grid-scale energy storage, and batteries are used at smaller scales. However, prospects for expansion of these technologies suffer from geographic limitations (pumped-storage hydroelectricity and compressed air energy storage), low roundtrip efficiency (compressed air energy storage), and high cost (batteries). Furthermore, pumped-storage hydroelectricity and compressed air energy storage are challenging to scale-down, while batteries are challenging to scale-up. In 2015, a novel compressed gas energy storage prototype system was developed at ORNL. This presentation will introduce the novel storage concept, discuss system design and critical parameters, and provide an overview of system performance as determined by physics based simulation and experimentation.

Block 4: 2:45 PM - 4:05 PM | 3:35 PM | Presentation | Star Rhodes Jr, Tenell 2015 GEM Master’s Fellow, Drexel University, Adobe Systems Incorporated MatCap – A rapid planar material capture device In this project, we would like to reduce the time it takes to capture a measured BRDF for a spatially varying planar material at high resolution.

We plan on augmenting an off-the-shelf x-y gantry system with a camera and LED array. The software will automate the process for calibration and BRDF acquisition. The capture station will move a planar array of LEDs, with aligned camera, over a planar target, capturing both view-dependent and lighting dependent appearance. The intention is to capture a data-set that could be used to fit an analytic BRDF model such as the PBR shading model.

Block 3: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | 2:05 PM | Presentation | La Gorce Roberts, Claudia V. 2016 GEM Master’s Fellow, Princeton University, Adobe Systems Incorporated Neural Network Evaluations on iOS Many of Adobe’s internally developed technologies, used in a wide variety of Adobe products, depend on Deep Learning during execution. These technologies include image similarity, image tagging, face recognition, and image aesthetics. Currently, these technologies execute the Deep Learning portion of their computations either on desktop or server hardware, making it either impossible to use them in mobile applications, or requiring the applications to connect to Adobe hosted servers. Implementing Adobe’s internal Deep Learning execution environment, Deepnet, on mobile, will allow Adobe’s mobile products to directly perform these AI algorithms entirely on the mobile device, including phones, tablets, and cameras, thus helping to enable a “mobile first” strategy.

An ontology is a set of formal names and definitions of the properties, types and relationships of entities that exist within a given domain. For this project, the challenge was to design, build and understand the process of creating an ontology for Photoshop that can effectively categorize all of its online help documentation as well as answer any questions a user may have about any task or concept related to using the tool.

Wood, Sossena 2012 GEM PhD Fellow, University of Pittsburgh, National Society of Black Engineers Evaluation of an Anthropomorphic Heterogeneous Head Phantom Using B1 Mapping for MRI MR (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Phantoms are MR instrumentation used to evaluate MR experiments to optimize and improve patient MR imaging. Basic head phantoms are spherical shaped with a diameter that is similar to the length of the human brain and filled with soluble, homogenous solutions. Basic phantoms used during experimental studies lack the ability to allow researchers to investigate the true behavior of the interaction of the RF field and human anatomy at higher electromagnetic frequencies. The purpose of this work, therefore, is to evaluate the performance of an 8-compartment, physical anthropomorphic heterogeneous head phantom through numerical and experimental studies performing B1 mapping— an electromagnetic application that measures the magnetic field. The designed phantom’s results are compared to a basic spherical and anthropomorphic homogeneous head phantom filled with water. Results indicate that a multi-compartment head phantom with mimicked tissue properties is more accurate than a basic spherical or homogenous anthropomorphic phantom.

Wilkins, Branford 2016 GEM Master’s Fellow, Texas A&M University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Characterization of Abiogenic and Biogenic ZnS Nanoparticles In order to determine the formation pathway of mercury sulfide particles found in the banks of the East Fork Poplar Creek located in Oak Ridge, TN, analogous zinc sulfide nanoparticles (formed either biogenically or abiogenically) were obtained in order to conduct structural and isotopic measurements that would allow their formation pathways to be elucidated.

The measurements focused on during this summer work were Atomic Force Microscopy measurements that were aimed at getting accurate heights of individual nanoparticles. It is proposed that if the planned suite of measurements (AFM, TEM, TOF-SIMS, STM, etc.) can be used to identify structural and/or isotopic differences among the differing zinc sulfide nanoparticle samples, these techniques can be carried over to study the mercury sulfide particles from the creek and determine their formation pathway.

Block 2: 11:10 AM - 12:00 PM | 11:55 AM | Presentation | Star Williams, Troi 2015 GEM PhD Fellow, University of South Florida, Cisco Systems Using Neural Networks for Autonomous Obstacle Avoidance in Outdoor Environments Small, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) require onboard sensors to autonomously navigate and detect obstacles within complex environments such as wooded areas, which are locations that contain many trees and other vegetation. However, small UASs, which are one meter or less in diameter, have limited carrying capacity, which restricts the number of sensors they can carry. Also, since outdoor navigation may require long endurance flights and small UASs have limited battery life, using power-hungry sensors such as laser range finders is not feasible. Thus, small UASs are usually limited to an onboard RGB camera. This research proposes a neural network-based, obstacle avoidance system that imitates the actions a pilot would perform in order to avoid an oncoming obstacle (such as a tree) based on images from the UAS’s onboard camera. This work also presents the predictive accuracy of the neural network in diverse outdoor locations.

Alina Machado Alina Machado joined the NBC 6 investigative team as a consumer reporter in May of 2016, after traveling the country as a network correspondent for CNN. She has been a witness to some of the biggest national stories in recent years, including the church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina and the George Zimmerman trial. Prior to joining CNN, Alina spent a decade working at local TV stations in Atlanta; Raleigh, North Carolina; Milwaukee and Chicago. Machado graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University with a master’s degree. She was also valedictorian at Miami Coral Park Senior High.
