2024 VALEDICTORIANS SHARE THEIR ASPIRATIONS MEET THE TSC TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

CATCH

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

Ellie Minogue

Elementary Teacher of the Year

It’s Friday in Ellie Minogue’s fourth and fifth grade highability class at Klondike Elementary School. It’s time for ketchup, mustard or pickles — sort of.

“Ketchup is for catching up on assignments; mustard is for things you must do; and pickles is anything you want,” says fourth grade student Lukas Gajdzik. “For pickles, I usually do computer coding or watch a Weekly Wonder video.”

Lukas and his classmates never know what each day will bring, only that Mrs. Minogue will challenge them to be their best. She approaches each day as an opportunity to help students unlock their potential gifts to become world-changing citizens.

Minogue is a Purdue University graduate with more than 12 years of experience teaching. Outside the classroom, Minogue is active in school, professional and community organizations. She is an advisor to Student Council and a member of the Tippecanoe County Extension Board and the Indiana Association for the Gifted.

“I hope my students leave my class with absolute joy for learning. I hope they remember that making mistakes and believing in yourself is a super important part of the learning process,” says Minogue. “I hope they remember all the silly digressions and times I said yes, and how much I loved them.”

Jolie McCartney

Secondary Teacher of the Year

“Dame cinco” says a very pleased Jolie McCartney as she returns a well-done assignment to sophomore Melia Hendon in Spanish II class. Melia smiles and stretches her arm up to get the high five McCartney asked for.

Melia says she looks forward to Spanish every day because of the welcoming, encouraging environment McCartney creates in her classroom.

“There’s never a dull moment. She is there to make you laugh, smile and work hard,” says Melia. “She stays late to help students and truly cares for her students and peers.”

Since earning a bachelor’s degree from Hanover College and a master’s degree from Ball State University, McCartney has spent 31 years teaching. In addition to teaching, she oversees the Raider Clothing Closet, sponsors the World Language Quiz Bowl and leads evening classes for educators who want to learn Spanish.

McCartney wants her students to feel welcomed, challenged and inspired: “I expect a lot from my students and give them even more in return. I want my students to look back on me as a teacher who genuinely cares and truly loves what she is doing.”

Register your student for the new school year

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 13. Information on registering your student for the new school year can be found at tscschools.com/enroll or by scanning the QR code.

Important student health information

According to Indiana law, when a student enrolls for the first time in a school corporation, a parent or guardian must submit a statement of the student’s immunizations to the school. This record must show the student has received the minimum number of immunizations at the required intervals for the student’s age. Please review the required immunizations at tscschools.com under Departments/ Health Services. Students may not attend school until required immunizations are up to date.

The TSC has partnered with the Cooke Center for Human Connection to access ParentGuidance.org, which provides free resources and coaching to help parents help their child. This resource can provide answers regarding your child’s mental health, child development, or your own needs. Topics include anxiety, building your child’s confidence and effects of screen time.

Families can access the resources on the Parents page at tscschools.com. Parent resources
