THE CULTURAL CENTER OF JAZZ EDUCATION & PERFORMANCE IN ARIZONA

Jazz is recognized around the world for its rich cultural heritage rooted in the African-American experience and is widely considered to be the first original American art form. Yet, most Americans graduate from high school with little knowledge of the history or importance of jazz.

Jazz serves as a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration. It brings together musicians from different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities, promoting diversity and fostering understanding among people.

Jazz embraces musical fusion and transcends barriers, creating a shared language that connects individuals from various walks of life. Jazz connects us as a community.

The Nash is the only dedicated jazz education and performance venue in the fifth largest city in America. We are embarking on an ambitious journey to enhance our impact on the community, expand our multi-generational audiences and meet the exciting increased demand of students for education in jazz.

With your support, we will bring the newly created Nash Center for Jazz Education to life and expand The Nash venue to support our jazz community.

“OUR NATION’S GREATEST INJUSTICE GAVE BIRTH TO OUR NATION’S GREATEST CULTURAL ACHIEVEMENT. THE NASH IS A PLACE TO CONTINUE OUR EXPRESSION OF FREEDOM THROUGH JAZZ, AND ESPECIALLY TO CULTIVATE YOUNG MUSICIANS AND AUDIENCES.” HERB ELY, CO- FOUNDER, THE NASH

WHY THE “NASH”?

A“Son of South Phoenix,” Grammy-Award winning Lewis Nash is one of jazz’s most recorded musicians, appearing on more than 500 recordings. Lewis has the distinction of being the only musician in jazz history to win Grammies in both the “Best Jazz Vocal” and “Best Jazz Instrumental” categories in two separate years: in 2004 with Nancy Wilson and McCoy Tyner; and in 2010 with Dee Dee Bridgewater and James Moody.

Lewis moved to New York City in 1981 and gained international recognition as a member of vocalist Betty Carter’s trio. As he traveled the world for nearly four years with Carter, Lewis met many of his musical peers and predecessors. Subsequently, Lewis became highly sought after, resulting in his touring,

recording and performing with a “who’s who” of jazz royalty, including Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, JJ Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Tommy Flanagan, Sonny Stitt, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, Benny Golson, Art Farmer, Gerry Mulligan, Hank Jones, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Heath, Randy Weston, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Lewis Nash’s 1989 debut recording, entitled “Rhythm Is My Business” signified his professionalism and why he has earned “legend status” over four swinging decades.

In addition to his performance career, Lewis Nash is a reputed jazz educator. He was a member of the first jazz studies faculty at The Juilliard School in 2001, and the faculty of the annual Vail Jazz Workshop for the past 20 years.

“THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER IN JAZZ!” MODERN

In 2017, Nash joined the jazz studies faculty at Arizona State University, where a Scholarship Endowment in his honor was created for annual award to a deserving ASU jazz performance student. Lewis interacts regularly with students throughout the educational programs at The Nash, providing them with an unparalleled level of authenticity and inspiration.

Indicative of Lewis’s respect in the jazz world and his impact on establishing The Nash’s credibility, Lincoln Center Jazz founder Wynton Marsalis drove pro bono from New York City to open The Nash in 2012! The Nash has been the focal point of jazz activity in Phoenix ever since, and it has been named by Downbeat Magazine as a “Great Jazz Venue in The World” every year (except during the pandemic) since 2014.

WHY IS JAZZ EDUCATION IMPORTANT?

PRESERVATION OF A RICH MUSICAL HERITAGE

The Nash’s exclusive focus on jazz fills music education gaps in our community.

ENHANCING MUSICALITY AND TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY

Jazz emphasizes strong instrumental and vocal skills, musicianship, improvisation and listening ability.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

By promoting jazz education, we celebrate diversity and help bridge cultural gaps, foster inclusion, and promote appreciation for diverse perspectives in the arts and in life.

DEVELOPING MUSICAL CREATIVITY AND IMPROVISATION SKILLS

Jazz inspires creativity, innovation, and individual expression through the art of improvisation.

COLLABORATIVE AND ENSEMBLE SKILLS

Learning in a safe and supportive space for musical exploration through group improvisation inspires students to find creative solutions to problems while working in a teamwork environment.

PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

Jazz education challenges students’ abilities in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills which promote intellectual growth and a lifelong love of learning.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

We prepare students for further music education after high school, including college auditions, to help ensure students are prepared for their futures. The students at The Nash further their social networks and create new groups of life-long friends as they study with other students from across the valley.

“THROUGH IMPROVISING WE LEARN TO VALUE OUR OWN CREATIVITY; THROUGH SWING WE COORDINATE OUR COMMUNICATION WITH OTHERS; AND THROUGH THE BLUES WE LEARN TO FIND AND CELEBRATE ‘MEANING’ IN THE TRAGIC AND ABSURD PARTS OF LIFE THAT AFFLICT EVERY COMMUNITY.” WYNTON MARSALIS “JAZZ IS LIFE MUSIC”

4

OUR VISION

We strive to provide the highest quality of jazz education to all students and provide a safe, engaging learning environment that provides students with the tools to enrich their lives as they pursue whichever discipline they choose. The Nash envisions an inclusive ever-expanding community that experiences, learns about and supports the art of jazz. In pursuit of this vision, The Nash will:

ACQUIRE the education center as a community anchor for jazz education.

IMPROVE UPON providing year-round education programs to all ages and develop new programs that better serve our community.

ENHANCE our community outreach programs through school visits, clinics, pop-up concerts and interface with other arts organizations throughout the valley.

BETTER ATTRACT and serve students in the Greater Phoenix Valley who may not have equal access to music education.

STRENGTHEN our leadership among Arizona’s statewide music education organizations.

SPREAD THE WORD and celebrate America’s rich traditions and values through teaching about its greatest musical art form, jazz!
