The Trust‟s outstanding achievement came after it beat stiff competition from its counterparts nationwide in the Healthcare, Excellence and Leadership (HEAL) Awards.

Among the highest accolades in healthcare, the HEAL Awards pay tribute to the dedicated professionals and organisations which lead the way in boosting the quality of healthcare in the UK during the last year. They were voted for by healthcare professionals, patients and the public.

Healthcare Hero of the Year 2010 Held at The Royal College of Surgeons, on Monday 25 October, and hosted by 24/7 Media Group, the event was dedicated to thanking the NHS. It was attended by more than 250 healthcare professionals from across the country, as well as celebrities Barbara Windsor, former EastEnders star; Esther Rantzen, ChildLine founder and TV presenter; and Moira Stuart, Newsreader.

The Trust was delighted to scoop two out of the eight accolades on offer. Brought home to Newham was the Greenest Hospital Award, with a double celebration occurring when Yunus Dudhwala, Head of Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services and Muslim Chaplain at the Trust, was announced as the Healthcare Hero of the Year 2010. Yunus, who was on of a shortlist of 20 health stars drawn from all aspects of the NHS across the country, won a brand new Renault Megane worth £20,000.

Yunus said: “I am extremely honoured and humbled by the support shown to me by the staff in the hospital and the community at large for me to achieve this award. This award is not only about me, it is an award that recognises the hard work of all staff in the NHS. “This is a great credit to Chaplaincy as on many occasions it is a hidden department in hospitals, but the support received from the community shows how important spiritual care is to many patients and families, especially at the time of significant news and bereavement. I want to thank everyone who voted for me and in reality everyone who works in the NHS is a hero!”

In 2003, Yunus became the first person in the UK from a minority faith to lead a Chaplaincy Department in the NHS. Yunus has helped countless patients, families and staff at very difficult and challenging times. From patients with minor to major illnesses, and especially at the time of death, Yunus has attended as Chaplain to try his best to enhance the experience, along with that of their families. Yunus has helped to devise and change policies, practices and environment in the Trust to improve the experience for patients and families. He is also Faiths Adviser to the College of Healthcare Chaplains’ National Professional Committee.

Hugh Steward, Director of Environment and Client Services, said: “I am delighted to have received the award for Greenest Hospital on behalf of my Team and the wider Trust. This accolade is a fitting testament to the hard work, dedication and vision of members of the Environment and Client Services (ECS) Team - all of whom deliver high quality and sector leading services and facilities to the people of Newham.

“As we approach the London 2012 Olympic Games in the London Borough of Newham, a bid which was founded on sustainability and legacy to the local community, I am proud that Newham University Hospital NHS Trust is complementing that agenda and leading the way on behalf of our sector.”

Brian Shepherd, Technical Support and Energy Manager, said: “I am very pleased the Trust won the Greenest Hospital Award. It shows good recognition for all the hard work being done by the ECS Team, focusing on more energy efficient plant and better control, for both existing buildings and refurbishments. Also - but as important - this shows that all Trust staff are aware of the importance of making this Hospital greener, and that the majority of staff are turning off lighting and equipment when not in use.

“The ECS Team is currently looking at the way we work and seeing where we can introduce new practices and, where possible, new technology, to reduce the energy we use thus reducing the Trust’s carbon emissions.”

The Trust’s experience and expertise in delivering key infrastructure projects has meant it has attracted substantial investment over the past few years with new buildings, access roads and many other environmental improvements. It is also ground breaking amongst NHS organisations for its approach to embracing the sustainability and carbon reduction agenda, and has won national recognition for its work in this area.

Newham University Hospital NHS Trust and the University of London are the first public sector bodies that are using a framework set up by the London Mayor and involves the retrofitting of buildings to save energy and cut carbon emissions.

The Trust is also eagerly waiting to discover if it has won two other national awards. It is shortlisted in the Accident and Emergency Nursing category of the Nursing Times 2010 Awards. Winners will be announced on 3 November, at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, in London. The trailblazing Trust is also just one of three contenders shortlisted nationwide in the Guardian Public Service Award in the category of Diversity and Equality, for its lifechanging Newham Doc scheme which helps local students who would not otherwise be able to do so, to fulfil their dream to become Doctors. Winners will be announced on 23 November, at a ceremony in Old Billingsgate, London.

He finished the memorization of the whole Qur'an at the age of ten and graduated from Al-Azhar University with BA Honours in Islamic studies in English. He has also quoted by many magazines including the Economist and Time Out. · Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari – The Next Generation Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-kawthari is a scholar and author of Islamic books and translator of several Arabic works to the English language. He has studied in different parts of the world. He started learning about Islam from a very young age and memorized the entire Qur‟an at a very tender age of nine. He underwent a one year course of specialization in the science of issuing religious verdicts (Fatwa) and has graduated from Dar al-Uloom. Presently, he resides in Leicester, UK, where he is a teacher of various traditional Islamic sciences at Jamiah Uloom al-Qur‟an, and Director and researcher at the Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence. He is also a Shari‟ah Advisor for Habib Bank AG Zurich, UK - Islamic Banking department.

What is Homegroup?

Homegroup is a unique initiative aimed at empowering parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively address the modern challenges that parents face. Parents in the western world encounter unique challenges that require careful and measured consideration to ensure their children grow up firmly grounded in the values essential to our faith. Too often are our children left to be raised by the prevailing norms of society, this is something that we need to change.

We aspire to promote good character, tolerance and social responsibility amongst our children. We also want to encourage a greater awareness of the effects of inter-spousal relationships on a child‟s development. We strongly believe that these measures will greatly contribute towards building a stronger and more cohesive society.

We will work with communities, produce and disseminate literature and deliver short-courses to raise awareness about the importance of good parenting and the duties that parents have towards their children. We will also equip parents with the knowledge and skills required to effectively execute these roles.

Welcome to the London Borough of Newham, a place where people apparently choose to “live, work and stay”, but in reality are more likely to 'stray'.

Amidst all of this "multi-balti" mix, the previous Government awarded nearly £2 million of hard earned public money under the PVE (Prevent) or CONTEST agenda to tackle “violent extremism”. So where did it all go?

Has the community been consulted? Are Newham's Muslims so lazy and stupid that they were too pre-occupied with the Olympics property bubble? In other areas where Muslims make up a significant proportion of the population, community discussions about PVE have been relatively open.

However, in Newham, despite numerous Freedom of Information Act requests by different groups as well as individuals, Newham Council continues to be silent, evasive and simply unconcerned, as Labour's “Fatcats” couldn't really get much fatter.

All “gravy trains” must come to an end - thankfully the good nature of the hard working British public can no longer accept the status quo. There is now growing evidence from individual public investigations of rampant corruption within the Council and their wonderfully transparent and accountable decision makers. Examples of excellent usage of money to prevent acts of terrorism include: * Employing relatives of councillors to attend "English language classes". * So-called "Advisory" Consultancy payments for former spooks and Met Police officers which bill into the thousands. * Instead of English and Maths, we have undue patronising focus on "GCSE Islamic Studies".

All Pakistan Nurses Association (APNA)UK All Pakistan Nurses Association (APNA)UK held a Thalassaemia awareness event in collaboration with Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Centre (KITCC), Pakistan in Barking Community Centre, Barking. Thalassaemia is an inherited disease and can be caused if both parents are Thalassaemia minor. There are three hundred thousand patients of Thalassaemia in Pakistan. APNA UK is trying to make people aware of this inherited disease so that they can make informed decisions when arranging marriages of their children.

Local Councillors, Cllr. L. Butt, Cllr. M. Hussain, and Cllr. A. Aziz spared their time to attend the event and they gave their valuable comments.

Mr. Muhammad Iqbal chairman (KITCC) provided important information about his work in South Asia especially Pakistan where he is successfully running 14 Thalassaemia centres in Pakistan.
