AT A GLANCE
Celebrating our twentieth anniversary was cause for celebration and a chance to reflect on just how far we’ve come. In twenty years, we have developed 60 new Canadian musicals, employed over 1500 Canadian artists, trained over 600 young people at no cost to them, and paid over $5 million in fees to our artists.
In everything that we do, artists are at the centre. This season they once again held the gargantuan task of distilling the human experience into song, story, and dance; striking to our very hearts with these most primal art forms. They make the ineffable real, tangible, and digestible - touching our hearts, and revealing deep emotions. In the 23/24 Season their creativity inspired us, their skill amazed us, and their work brought us closer together.
Our work would not be possible without the herculean efforts of our staff, artisans, tradespeople, donors and volunteers, who buttress our work with their unwavering support, sharing in a unified vision for the

company as the place for musicals to be conceived, developed and premiered through a distinctly Canadian lens today and for years to come. Special thanks to our Board of Directors for the dedication, passion and deep care with which they steward this organization.
To say we’ve changed would be an understatement; to imply that we’ve arrived at any kind of destination would be false. We’re forever evolving, changing direction. No two years look the same, but they’re all driven by the desire to foster new and exciting musical theatre, to support our contingent of artists, and to facilitate groundbreaking work that excites audiences and puts Canadian musical theatre on the map.
The 23/24 Season was exceptional. Join us in this report as we reflect on a season of artistic triumph and record-breaking achievements.

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR

Dear Supporters and Friends of The Musical Stage Company,
As we reflect on our 20th anniversary season at The Musical Stage Company, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the journey we have traveled together. This milestone year has been a testament to our unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, community engagement, and the transformative power of musical theatre.
Throughout this season, we celebrated the smashing success of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, our partnership with Crow’s Theatre with its numerous extensions, 4 Dora Awards and ultimately picked-up for Mirvish’s 2025/26 season. Our annual gala concert UNCOVERED brought packed audiences to their feet with the music of Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. Our commitment to new work development and bringing the Canadian musical theatre community together led to the inaugural Canadian Festival of New Musicals, which created electric buzz and inspiring connections amongst artists, composers and producers from across North America. Our performances have captivated audiences, transported them to new worlds, and inspired countless individuals of all ages. Behind each production was a dedicated team of artists, volunteers, and staff whose passion and creativity brought our stage to life. We are so proud of this incredible community that The Musical Stage Company has been able to bring together over our 20 years.
None of this would have been possible without the steadfast support of our donors, sponsors, patrons, and volunteers. Your generosity and commitment have sustained us through two decades of growth and transformation, enabling us to expand our vision, tell important stories through musical storytelling, and reach broader audiences than ever before.
Looking ahead, as we embark on the next chapter of our journey, we are energized by the possibilities that lie ahead. With your continued support, we are confident that The Musical Stage Company will continue to thrive as a beacon of innovationcreativity, community, and cultural enrichment for many years to come.
Thank you for being part of our 20-year story. Together, let us build upon our successes and create even more unforgettable moments on and off the stage.
Warm regards,

Megan Deeks Board Chair
A LOOK BACK ON
Our 2023/24 season marked 20 years of making it better with music. From our inaugural production of TICK, TICK...BOOM! in 2005 all the way to this season’s production of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, the most successful show in company history, The Musical Stage Company has always been one of the leading institutions at the forefront of the Canadian musical theatre movement.
UNCOVERED: FLEETWOOD MAC & THE EAGLES
Our 17th annual UNCOVERED concert returned last November with Kevin Wong taking over as creative visionary, spotlighting the music of two of the most influential bands of the past 50 years, Fleetwood Mac & The Eagles.
Over 3,200 patrons attended this year’s 4 performances of UNCOVERED, nearly selling out the run at the illustrious Koerner Hall.
“I have been a fan of and have worked behind-the-scenes on UNCOVERED for years. I am thrilled to be picking up from where the incomparable Reza Jacobs left off to carry this beautiful concert series forward. Fleetwood Mac is one of the few bands that has remained culturally relevant more than 50 years after they formed, and The Eagles are one of the most influential bands in rock history. Their back catalogues provide a rich body of work to explore with complex narratives”
– Kevin Wong, Arranger, Orchestrator, & Music Co-Supervisor

AN ICONIC SEASON
“Musical Theatre at its finest” – The Toronto Star
“An
exhilarating work of choatic beauty” – Next Magazine
“Hailey Gillis and Evan Buliung are the celestial phenomena you can’t tear your eyes or ears away from”
– The Globe and Mail
The longest running show in the company’s history with 8 extensions and a total of 16 weeks of over 100 sold out shows.
We were thrilled to partner with Crow’s Theatre to present the long-awaited Canadian premiere of the Broadway phenomenon NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 by Dave Malloy.
This 12-time Tony-nominated musical delivered a radically contemporary and moving take on Tolstoy’s War and Peace with its audacious storytelling and groundbreaking score that mixes indie rock, pop, folk, electronic dance, and classic Broadway music.
The show will go on to captivate even more Toronto audiences next summer in Mirvish Productions’ highly anticipated 2025/26 Main Subscription Season. This enhanced presentation will see an expanded ensemble and orchestra as well as a heightened take on the show’s spectacular production design.
We can’t wait to give audiences another once in a lifetime musical experience next year and to bring all of this show’s beautiful chaos, magic, and world class talent to the Royal Alexandra stage, running July and August 2025.

– Skye Rogers
“Musical Stage Company’s Apprentice Program is unique in that the Apprentices are not an add-on or a siloed part of the MSC programming, but made an integral part of the company for the year.”
– Bryn Kennedy
The RBC Apprentice Program offered 7 emerging artists mentorship with The Musical Stage Company, learning from established artists and receiving showcase opportunities to help build a foundation for their careers through custom-tailored training and professional development.

The Musical Stage Company is thrilled to announce that the next Crescendo artist is Kevin Wong .
Launched in 2017, The Crescendo Series is an unprecedented career breakthrough to a composer of musical theatre in Canada through the multi-year residency and commitment to produce multiple original musicals by the artist. In addition to a production commitment, Crescendo Series artists also receive an annual bursary, dramaturgical support, and international advocacy and promotion.
This season, audiences got a sneak peek of Kevin’s musical IN REAL LIFE as part of our Canadian Festival of New Musicals; Kevin is also currently developing the musical SOFT
MAGICAL TOFU BOYS with The Musical Stage Company as well.
The inaugural Crescendo Series artist was Britta Johnson, who saw musicals LIFE AFTER, DR. SILVER: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE, and KELLY v. KELLY produced by The Musical Stage Company. LIFE AFTER has since gone on to have critically acclaimed runs at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego and at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.
Anton Lipovetsky was added to the program in 2020 and his musical BLACKOUT was produced in the summer of 2021. Toronto audiences also got a sneak peek of Anton’s current musical in development, COWBOY TEMPEST CABARET at the Canadian Festival of New Musical this past May.
“The Musical Stage Company embraced me wholeheartedly, fostering my training as a young composer, lyricist, dramaturge, and arts administrator. It is a beautiful culmination to now be the incoming Crescendo artist at this theatre company that I artistically ‘grew up’ with.” – Kevin Wong, Crescendo Artist

CRESCENDO ARTIST: KEVIN WONG

ACCESSIBILITY
The Musical Stage Company believes that everyone deserves to be able to experience the power of musical storytelling. This season, our programming featured accessibility initiatives aimed at removing barriers, fostering community, and strengthening the connection between art, artists, and the audience. Every production includes at least one thoughtfully integrated accessibility initiative. In 2023-24, we offered audio descriptions, affordable ticketing options, and the integration of ASL interpretation in the rehearsal room.
AUDIO DESCRIPTION
Audio description translates in real time, the visual elements of our productions to patrons who are blind, low-vision, and partially sighted. In 2023/24, we offered audio descriptions at our UnCovered concerts and throughout the run of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, where we had record breaking attendance for this accessibility measure.
AFFORDABLE TICKETING OPTIONS
We recognize that not all barriers to attending the theatre are physical. This season, we offered accessible ticketing options, including subsidized tickets and pay-whatyou-wish prices for each of our mainstage productions.
ASL INTERPRETATION
Through the vehicle of our Canadian Festival of New Musicals, we explored integrating ASL into the development process of COWBOY TEMPEST CABARET by bringing on a Director of Artistic Sign Language (DASL), a position that has rapidly evolved in our industry over the past decade.
The creative team wished to use this funding in an exploratory and educational capacity throughout the workshop/rehearsal weeks leading up to the festival. As a result of the DASL’s valuable input, the team has big dreams of future iterations of this project.
We are constantly in pursuit of new best practices in our accessibility efforts, and from this project we have a solid foundation with which to work from so we can better serve audiences who would benefit from ASL in Musical Theatre performance.

NEW WAYS TO GIVE
This season marked the launch of our newest giving program: the Fermata Circle!
In music, a fermata is used to indicate a note that is held for an indefinite period of time. Musicians often refer to notes with fermata markings as “lasting forever”. This makes a Fermata the perfect symbol to represent our newest legacy giving program, honouring donors who have made a gift in their will or bequest to continue their legacy to Canadian musical theatre.
Our Fermata donors strike a chord that will last forever, generously continuing the legacy to The Musical Stage Company, and ensuring that Canadian musicals will continue to reach stages across the country and around the world for generations to come.
YOUNG DONORS CLUB
The Young Donors Club (YDC) is a brand new initiative designed to create an exciting and affordable philanthropic experience for donors 40 and Under. For as little as $10/month ($120/year), YDC members are a community of like minded peers who believe in the importance of musical theatre in Canada, helping us develop original works, support emerging artists, and change the way that Canadians hear musical theatre - one show at a time.
Some highlights from this year’s YDC events include exclusive intermission receptions at UNCOVERED: Fleetwood Mac & The Eagles, a Waitress viewing party

Want to learn more about the Fermata Circle, or how you can join YDC? Reach out to Colette Richardson, Development Associate at coletterichardson@ musicalstagecompany.com.
