LETTER FROM OUR CEO
Dear Muck Friends and Family,
Thank you for celebrating this Year of Many Milestones with us. We’ve been talking quite a bit about how 2025 marks 100 years since the building of the Mansion. But it’s also 50 years since the Muckenthaler Family donated the property to be used to “enrich the human spirit through the arts,” 30 Years since our first Car Show, and this will be the 20th Annual Jazz Festival.
How do we put into words, or numbers, the impact The Muck has had on the community in the past century? More than 1000 performances have taken place on our stage, hundreds of artists have had their work in our gallery, over 5000 locals have gotten married here, 2000 cars have registered for our car show and close to 10,000 school kids have come through on tours, or seen a show, or had their graduations here. We know of families where SIX generations have taken classes here.
That’s why when people call The Muck “a hidden gem” we always take a step back. We’re not hidden at all. We are the embedded, ingrained, cherished, valued, forward-thinking leader of arts and education in this region. And at the same time, we are you.
We’re thrilled to have you celebrate with us during this milestone year. Whether that means you join us on our trip to Switzerland, Austria, and Germany to visit where the Muckenthalers originated, whether you send your kids to summer camp, bring your family to an ECT show celebrating the Centennial this fall, or attend the art gallery exhibit of work by our founding Board Member Florence Arnold, we’re glad you’re on this journey with us.
Now, I have some ideas about our second century. Let’s talk.
Farrell Hirsch, CEO
WE ARE A CELEBRATION OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT THROUGH THE ARTS
The Muck’s mission is to spark the imagination and encourage the creativity of its community through art exhibitions, music, and community outreach, all made possible through the innovative use of the historic Muckenthaler Estate.
The Mansion itself is getting ready to celebrate an historic birthday. The estate, consisting of an 18-room mansion and the surrounding 8.5 acre grounds, was built in 1925 by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler and has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places since 1999. In 1965, Harold Muckenthaler donated the mansion to the city of Fullerton, with the stipulation that his childhood home be used as a public cultural center.
That means the 2025 Centennial is right around the corner. In preparation we’ve hired new landscape architects who will be transforming the green spaces on our campus this year. And for the first time we’ll have all of our irrigation automated. We will be expanding our sculpture garden and the new Pat and Rose Young Art Studio will have been open for over a year.
And 2025 itself promises to be a year full of eye popping celebrations of the vision of the founding family of this organization. We always make a point of reminding you that whatever artform you use to indulge your senses, as a teacher, a student, or as a patron, you should make the Muck your artistic home.

THE SECRET WORKS OF DR. SEUSS
Illustrator by day, surrealist by night, Dr. Seuss created a body of irrepressible work that redefines this American icon as an iconographic American artist. The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss often shows a side of the artist that most readers, familiar with him through his classic children’s books, have never seen. These “Midnight Paintings,” along with significant drawings and sculpture, were often created by Dr. Seuss at night for his own personal enjoyment and were rarely, if ever, exhibited during his lifetime.

He also directed at outside theater companies, which often enabled him to invite current Fullerton College students to join him in the world of professional theater. One of his most large-scale productions was Fullerton College’s “85th Anniversary Celebration and Presidential Inauguration” in 1997, which featured a cast of 500 singers, dancers, and musicians.
