Dear Muck Family and Friends, The transformative news for 2024 is literally three decades in the making. For those of you who used to pull into our parking lot and your first image of the Muck was a trailer housing our art classes, I hope you share our joy and wonder at the new Pat and Rose Young Art Studio that now stands majestically welcoming you to the magical nine acres where we “enrich the human spirit through the arts.” Its 30-foot high vaulted wood beam ceiling, supported by ornate trusses, was designed by Crane Architecture to be both a cathedral to learning, and and to serve as the headquarters for our Education Department. If you were with us in 2023, I hope you got a chance to see the legendary Poncho Sanchez headline our Jazz Festival -- just two days before headlining the Hollywood Bowl. I hope you got to see Ilya Yakushev playing our Steinway -- just two days before playing the Steinway at Carnegie Hall. I hope you got to see Sean Oliu on our stage fresh off his debut at The Grand Ole Opry.

4 | 2024 Season

The world’s greatest artists appear on our stages and on the walls of our gallery. We’ve got a Salvador Dali show in the gallery this year. We’ve got The Electric Company Theatre returning with Fiddler on the Roof, Robin Hood, and Much Ado About Nothing. We’ve got the band Second Moon flying from Korea to launch their US Tour here, and Mozart’s Opera, “The Impresario” from Lyric Opera Orange County. And we’ve got the 19th Annual Jazz Fest, and our Gala, and our community festivals. All at the place the LA Times called “a little slice of heaven.” Kudos and thank you to our staff, our board, our sponsors, donors, visitors and friends. If you’d like to become one of us, reach out. I would love to chat about that. Farrell Hirsch, CEO Muckenthaler Cultural Center

The Muck’s mission is to spark the imagination and encourage the creativity of its community through art exhibitions, music, and community outreach, all made possible through the innovative use of the historic Muckenthaler Estate. The Mansion itself is getting ready to celebrate an historic birthday. The estate, consisting of an 18-room mansion and the surrounding 8.5 acre grounds, was built in 1925 by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler and has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places since 1999. In 1965, Harold Muckenthaler donated the mansion to the city of Fullerton, with the stipulation that his childhood home be used as a public cultural center.

6 | 2024 Season

That means the 2025 Centennial is right around the corner. In preparation we’ve hired new landscape architects who will be transforming the green spaces on our campus this year. And for the first time we’ll have all of our irrigation automated. We will be expanding our sculpture garden and the new Pat and Rose Young Art Studio will have been open for over a year. And 2025 itself promises to be a year full of eye popping celebrations of the vision of the founding family of this organization. We always make a point of reminding you that whatever artform you use to indulge your senses, as a teacher, a student, or as a patron, you should make the Muck your artistic home.

Jac Alva Curates “Unsavory” Jul 11 - Sept 1 Throughout the history of art, food has been depicted via imagery of culinary delights, as well as social gatherings, sumptuous feasts, and mouthwatering still life representations. Nonetheless, these charming and innocuous displays of materiality often fail to address the troubling narratives regarding the manner in which food has been cultivated, exchanged, processed, distributed, and consumed. In contrast, Unsavory will unveil the many destructive aspects–both to humans and the environment–brought about by the production/ingestion of food and beverage.

Shattered Hearts Illuminated Minds: Visions of Clarity Sept 12 - Nov 10

This group show features eight glass artists: Tina Arroyo, Margaret Garcia, Cat Morales, Ron Garcia, Magda Audifred, Zara Gomez, Leigh Adams, and Evan Chambers. The exhibit is inspired by the fragility and functionality of glass and the artist’s ability to push design boundaries in the studio.

2024 Muck Artist-in-Residence

LAUREN NICOLE Lauren Nicole (LN) is a neurodivergent, Indigenous, Southern California-based artist, focusing on painting and beadwork. Her expressively vibrant and exaggerated portrait style, with its play on perspective, immerses viewers into the sensations of having sensory-processing differences. Drawing strength from her neurodiverse traits, like synesthesia, Lauren’s palette contains a hidden language of traits behind each work. Her work is also a commentary on the silencing of emotions, what is considered appropriate, and the onslaught of infantilization and predatory sexualization when one is perceived as weak or having less inherent value by societal standards. Combining elements of her Indigenous heritage (Tongva, Chumash), beadwork and Native plant relatives are commonly incorporated into her work. Her work has been shown across the United States and Canada. Most recently, Lauren was awarded the California Creative Corps ‘23-’24 Artist Grant from the Arts Council for Long Beach and the California Arts Council. Her work with local art nonprofits includes leading sensory-safe open studio sessions for neurodiverse and/or disabled artists beginning in 2024. 38 | 2024 Season
