2023 SEASON THE MUCK

Dear Muck Family and Friends,
Welcome to 2023.
If you were along for the ride with us in 2022 you were able to attend everything from our first ever production of an opera, to a traveling circus, to an evening with Winston Churchill. We had incredible concerts from New-to-the Muck artists like Jessica Kaczmarek, Take3, and Brooke Aston. And our gallery was honored to house the work of Bret Price, Sheinina Raj, and KAWAA.
But I will always remember 2022 as the year that we were able to raise, with your help, over a million dollars to build our new Arts Studio Classrooms. There’s a good chance while you’re reading this, that our new building is under construction. But 2023 will also be the year the Electric Company Theatre brought in “The Sound of Music”. The year the Lyric Opera of OC returned with “La Traviata”. The year the Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin performed. The year our Car Show returns to its traditional May calendar dates. The year we flew in a Swedish
pop star, presented a Korean folk tale, showed you African Drumming, and welcomed legendary puppet Lamb Chop. The year Poncho Sanchez returned and the year one of the Young Dubliners played.
It’s a daunting task to write about 2023 before it happens. We can only discuss plans and not memories. But here’s what we can know for sure. Just like every one of the years leading up to it, The Muck will make 2023 a joyful experience on our stage, a mesmerizing immersion in our gallery, an eye-opening world of wonder in our classrooms, a trailblazing adventure on our trips, and, as the LA Times called us, “a little slice of heaven” right here in your neighborhood.
I would also urge you to take a look at the page in this book that displays the names of our Board and Staff. You should get to know the names of the people who are doing all this good work for the community. In fact if you’d like to become one of us, reach out. I would love to chat about that.
Farrell Hirsch, CEO Muckenthaler Cultural CenterWith the unwavering support of our community, The Muck has raised over a million dollars to replace our outdated classroom space with a modern, multidisciplinary art studio.
Named after local philanthropists Pat and Rose Young, this new studio designed by Crane Architectural Group is set to open in Summer 2023.

The Muck mission is to spark the imagination and encourage the creativity of its community through art exhibitions, music, and community outreach, all made possible through the innovative use of the historic Muckenthaler Estate.
The Mansion itself is getting ready to celebrate an historic birthday. The estate, consisting of an 18-room mansion and the surrounding 8.5 acre grounds, was built in 1925 by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler and has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places since 1999. In 1965, Harold Muckenthaler donated the mansion to the city of Fullerton, with the request that his childhood home be used as a public cultural center.
That means the 2025 Centennial is right around the corner. In preparation we’ve hired new landscape architects who will be transforming the green spaces on our campus this year. And for the first time we’ll have all of our irrigation automated. We’ll be expanding our sculpture garden. We’ll have the new Pat and Rose Young Studio open by then.
And 2025 itself promises to be a year full of eye popping celebrations of the vision of the founding family of this organization. We always make a point of reminding you that whatever artform you use to indulge your senses, as a teacher, a student, or as a patron, you should make the Muck your artistic home.

Jac Alva graduated Summa Cum Laude honors with her MA in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism from Azusa Pacific University in 2021.
Her research focuses on modern foodoriented media in fine and commercial art, including packaging, design, and marketing. Jac’s interests in this field derive from her years of experience as a food/beverage hospitality worker.
Her exposure to unsavory aspects of the U.S. food system have compelled her to explore the relationship between popular consumption and today’s unprecedented levels of food waste as well as its impact on the environment.
Through her investigation of these issues, Jac has unearthed connections between modern art’s role in propagating overindulgence within the fields of media, representation, and food culture. Furthermore, from both an academic and creative stance, she explores the art world’s innovative solutions to reducing and reusing food waste, thereby aligning her scholastic interests with her artistic endeavors.
Jac’s portfolio includes mixed media designs, specifically, food themed trash art. In addition, as a multi-passionate creative, she has experience curating themed art exhibitions for Low Key Gallery and has built a network of opportunities for artists to share and display their artwork and brands. Currently, Jac serves as an art instructor for The Muckenthaler Cultural Center while administering her own teaching brand, Healing He(art) with Jac Alva Art.
