Mission

OUR PURPOSE & COMMITMENT

We are a school of inquiry, innovation, and impact. Grounded in Christian values, we prepare all students to be college-ready, globally competitive, and engaged citizen leaders. We commit to creating and sustaining a school culture where all members feel valued, seen, and heard so we may design a better world…together.

Approach

LEARNING THAT LASTS: COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION AT MOUNT VERNON

At Mount Vernon, learning is defined by what students truly know, understand, and can do. Through Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and Competency-Based Education (CBE), we ensure every learner masters the literacies, skills, and attributes they need to thrive in college, in careers, and in life.

Instead of averaging scores or moving on before concepts are understood, CBE is designed for mastery. Through real-world projects, hands-on problem-solving, and authentic assessments that mirror the complexity of today’s world, students demonstrate true understanding.

Our teachers are designers of learning experiences, empowering students to tackle complex challenges, make meaningful connections, and take ownership of their unique journey.

• Project-based learning units ensure lasting context and integrated learning across subjects.

• Design thinking encourages learners to ask bold questions, uncover meaningful insights, and design solutions that matter.

• Competency-based assessments provide explicit, meaningful, and timely feedback specific to learning outcomes in each subject area. Our assessment philosophy is built on communicating learning intentions and collecting evidence of understanding.

Whether leading a design sprint, presenting at an Impact Summit, or collaborating across grade levels, Mount Vernon learners gain the confidence to think critically, navigate ambiguity, and innovate boldly.

Competency-Based Education explained by Kristy

PERSONALIZED PATHWAYS Along a Student's Journey of Purpose

At Mount Vernon, personalized pathways begin as early as age 2 in Preschool, where students embrace the Mantra, "Start with questions." This early exploration and play fosters curiosity and lays a foundation for deeper knowledge. As students transition to Lower School, they engage in classes, clubs, and activities that expand their choices. In Grade 5, the first "Impact Summit" showcases their self-leadership and agency through personally meaningful projects.

In Middle School, learning is amplified through purpose statements and experiences like the Impact Design Lab (IDL), culminating in the Grade 8 Impact Summit. By the time students reach Upper School, they can choose from diverse pathways such as iProject, Innovation Diploma, Global Impact Diploma, Interim trips, and internships. These experiences prepare Mount Vernon graduates to be college-ready, globally competitive, and engaged citizen leaders.
