Famous motorcycles from TV/film at auction

An opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to own a slice of celebrity-riding history will soon be here with famous bikes from the likes of Led Zepplin’s drummer John Bonham and the televisions coolest guy, Happy Days - Fonzi. These and other items will be offered by Profiles in History, the world’s largest auctioneer of Hollywood memorabilia, as part of their Hollywood Auction 74. Henry Winkler’s ‘The Fonz’ Triumph Trophy TR5 motorcycle from Happy Days is up for grabs.

The Fonz became so popular Henry Winkler was eventually featured in the ending credits second only to Ron Howard. In early episodes he rode custom Harley-Davidsons, then a Triumph changing again to a BSA. Overall, the Fonz rode a variety of motorcycles including Harley Panhead, Harley Knucklehead, Harley Sportster, Triumph 500cc Twin, Trophy 650cc and a BSA. Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham’s custom Triumph “Sunset Tripper” chopper, inspired by the legendary “Captain America” chopper from Easy Rider as well as a HarleyDavidson XLCH 1000 Eagle ‘Stratocycle’ use Evel Knievel in a movie .Starring the famous motorcycle daredevil, ‘Viva Knievel!’ was a fictional action film released in 1977. Ideal Toy Company made a toy version of the Stratocycle which became the most valuable and collectable of all Evel Knievel toys.

Havoc Motorcycles Announces Company’s Launch A new motorcycle manufacturer, Havoc Motorcycles (havoc-motorcycles.com), has announced its launch, releasing details of its line-up of heavyweight motorcycles to be available for the 2016 model year. The flagship model, “Iron Flight: Mike Tyson Special Edition,” is a special edition produced under trademark license from iconic boxer and entertainer Mike Tyson. It features a 124 ci engine, and Mike Tyson’s iconic tattoo incorporated into an air-

brushed paint scheme, with matching machined wheels and accessories. It’s Not For Everyone When I decided to finally get my motorcycle license, I was told about the safety courses being offered throughout most of Ontario’s colleges and even of some independent operators in the GTA. I attended the weekend course and passed with flying colours and was upgraded to a class M2, the rest is history as they say. I am sure most of you who are reading this are familiar with the process and have similar experiences when getting licensed to ride. The course in my opinion is not difficult, however it is mentally and physically demanding. It can be challenging at times when being taught new skills one after the other all weekend long. For some, I am certain information overload can become overwhelming. Then to compound things, when it comes down to the test at the end of the course, fear of failure can sometimes overcome a person and cause them to panic during the actual testing session, which usually results in what they fear most, failure. It’s unfortunate that some fail but is there more going on here than just overwhelming fear? One of the first things my instructor told our group way back then, was that some students in our group simply would not pass this course on the first try, some may never get their license at all and that’s because some people simply cannot bring all the necessary skills together to be able to ride a motorcycle safely – some people simply cannot ride, no matter how hard they try or how much they want it.

Recently, a close friend decided it was finally time to go for his M1 license and take the safety course. After discussing his intentions, I tried to explain what the course was about and the expectations from the instructors including some tips to help him succeed during the evaluation. As fate would have it, he has yet to pass the final skills test after two unsuccessful attempts. But he told me he would give it one more try. I understand his eagerness to pass, he wants to prove to himself he can do it and I’m sure to save a little face for my sake. He doesn’t understand that there is no need to save face with me. Our friendship isn’t based on what he can or can not do. I am sure there are things that he can do that I can’t. Ya know, there is a chance he may pass this last attempt and all will be right in his world, but another thought keeps eating at me – what if he does pass and not due to confidence in his own skills and his ability to perform and rely/build on those skills in the real world, what if it’s just a fluke this time. A total of only about 16 hours riding time under his belt on a 250 cc motorcycle that weights approximately 300-400 lbs in a safe, controlled and closed environment. Riding on the road, exposed to the dangers of everyday traffic is a whole other ball game, especially on a 650 cc bike that weights approximately 600-700 lbs. I wouldn’t want a 30 year friendship to end in a statistic. Some people are just not meant to ride

and I am afraid my friend may fall into this category. It’s an unfortunate truth, especially after spending money on equipment and the course. I have said this many times when starting out to get your license - use what you have or can borrow to take your course and don’t invest in too much until after you have obtained your M2 license. If you are reading this and are contemplating going through the process of getting your motorcycle license you need to realize that there is a chance you could fall into the same category as my friend. Wanting to do something is just not enough when it comes to motorcycles. So is there a solution to this? Should I suggest he give it up? No, it’s not up to me, even as a friend. I believe the instructors of these courses have the ultimate responsibility and should sit those students down and go through an assessment process. Obviously only with the students they believe don’t have what it takes. Maybe everyone needs to have that type of conversation, getting feed back can also boost confidence in those who can ride. I also think that everyone starting out to get thier license needs to sit him/her self down and self assess. Ask questions like; ‘who am I doing this for?’, ‘why am I doing this?’, ‘what do I hope to gain from this experience?’. There is no shame in not being able to ride a motorcycle. But it would be a shame if something happened to my friend.

Club Races Electric Motorcycle in Utah “Gunga Din” Accomplishes the A University of Calgary club raced its ing so quickly.” Unthinkable homemade electric motorcycle, the ZephParrot said the club has come a long yr, to a fourth place finish at the eMotoRacing series in Tooele, Utah. Team Zeus is comprised almost entirely of engineering students and was the only university entry at the national zero-emissions competition. The race featured six teams and their electric motorcycles. President and third-year mechanical engineering student Kyle Parrot said going to the race was a great experience. He’s pleased with the team’s performance. “It’s really good considering all the other bikes were production model motorcycles,” Parrot said. The team has been working on the Zephyr for two years. Students converted a 2004 Suzuki gas bike to run on batteries. The bike doesn’t have a speedometer, but reached up to 230 km/h in tests prior to the race. The team raced the Zephyr once previously in the same race last year. “From last year to this year the change in performance of the motorcycles that were at the race was just huge,” Parrot said. “It shows the industry itself is mov-

He thinks part of the reason the club has become so popular is the increased profile of electric vehicles. “They are taking off right now. It’s such an evolving and expanding industry and people really see the value of joining our club,” Parrot said. He admitted part of the appeal comes from the unique project of the club. “The fact that it’s a motorcycle and it’s really cool and really fast — people seem to really respond to that.” Parrot said the club has also helped him get to know people in his faculty. The club is planning to work on the Zephyr for one more year and then start on a new model. “I’m thinking that we might actually go to a university race next year,” Parrot said. “That way we can see how we stack up against other universities. I imagine we’d do very well.”

“Gunga Din”, the 1947 Vincent Motorcycle Factory Test Bike and Racer, has captured one of the most esteemed of the big automobile awards at the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance. “Gunga Din”, the Star of the Bar Hodgson Collection, was awarded the prestigious Margaret Dunning “Spirit of Driving” Special Award on Sunday, September 13th. Owner Bar Hodgson stated, “I am very proud of Gunga Din’s accomplishment, certainly a most difficult feat for a motorcycle to achieve over many of the finest automobiles in North America.” “Gunga Din” was the Vincent Works test mule and development bike for all this British factory’s experimental parts and performance modifications, and contributed directly to the development of the legendary Black Shadow and the Black Lightning factory race bikes. In 1948 a motorcycle journalist, while test riding this motorcycle, found himself too fear-

ful to go to its top speed and rolled off the throttle at 118mph (190km/h). During the written road test, he quoted from the famous Rudyard Kipling poem - “You are a better man than I am, Gunga Din” – and the name stuck. Raced by factory rider and development tester George Brown, it dominated all forms of British motorcycle racing from 1947 to 1951. The bike set numerous land speed records at 143 mph (230 km/h), notably in Ireland and Belgium, and held many British and world speed records. The world class Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which took place on Sunday, September 13th at the posh Cobble Beach Golf Resort just north of Owen Sound, Ontario, is a true showcase of elegant and rarely seen vehicles from Brass Era antiques to the Exotics. A panel of 45 international judges covered the difficult task of determining the winners.

Indian Motorcycle Annouces its Zero Motorcycles Release 2016 Models 2016 Lineup Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today revealed that the company’s 2016 line of motorcycles and accessories will be unveiled October 15-18th at the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) in Orlando, Florida. An exclusive media presentation will be given on Thursday, October 15th, at 2:30pm EDT in the AIMExpo Media Hub. “In addition to great features, we have some new things in store that are

the direct result of customer feedback,” said Scot Harden, Zero Motorcycles VP of Global Marketing. “After a record year in 2015, there is no doubt that we will bring many new riders on board in 2016.” Zero invites motorcycle dealers, media and enthusiasts to visit at AIMExpo booth #1249. Demo rides will be available at AIMExpo Outdoors! on Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18.

Motorcyclists deliver money for park to honour slain Alberta toddler, dad BLAIRMORE, Alta. -- Hundreds of motorcycles rumbled along a southern Alberta highway to honour two-year-old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette and her father. Saturday’s event on Highway 3 delivered donations that will be used to improve a playground in Blairmore where Terry Blanchette and Hailey spent time together. Nearly 300 motorcyclists took part.

At the end, the riders gathered at the Pure Country Saloon in Frank, Alberta, where Blanchette worked. Police continue to investigate the double murder of the father and daughter in Blairmore on Monday. Ride organizer Troy Carlson says the participants all have kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews and that the tragedy really hits home.

Moving quickly from startup to contender, Indian Motorcycle has announced its motorcycle lineup for 2016. In case you missed it, here’s a brief refresher on the iconic American brand: The original Indian Motocycle (the “r” came later) began producing bikes in 1901, and battled rival Harley-Davidson for primacy and owner loyalty throughout the teens, twenties and thirties. Production shifts during World War II put Indian under severe strain. Even though some of its best bikes were produced during the Post War period, the original Indian went under in 1953. Multiple attempts to keep the name alive and to revive the brand followed over the next six decades, including some very close calls in the early 2000s. Enter Polaris, the Minnesota-based powersports giant, in 2011. Polaris bought Indian Motorcycle Company from Stellican, Ltd., a private equity company that was manufacturing bikes in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and moved production to Sprit Lake, Iowa. The first all-new Indian bikes debuted at the 2013 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as 2014 models. At the time, there were three models: The Chief Vintage, Chief Classic and

Chieftain, each using the same Thunderstroke 111 engine. For 2016, the Indian lineup has expanded to encompass three categories of motorcycle: Cruisers, Baggers and Tour. There are six models now, and a second engine, the V-Twin. For many motorcyclists this is their favourite time of the year. Shorter days, longer shadows, cooler temperatures…..it’s autumn. Fall offers some great reasons to get out and ride: It’s a great time to check out the scenery – Fall provides an amazing palette with the turning leaves. Some of the best roads to ride are often in areas where there are a lot of hills and trees that are the perfect canvas for autumn colors. Nature’s artwork is often best viewed from a motorcycle. You can take advantage of the cooler temperatures – Cool, crisp air is very refreshing this time of year. Riding temperatures can be so much more comfortable than in the summer heat. There is something about the smell of the falling leaves that makes it so inviting to be outdoors. You can truly justify wearing leather – Leather looks cool. And milder temperatures make it much more comfortable to wear. So strap on the chaps, pull on the leather gloves, and don your toughest-looking leather jacket. You’ll be comfortable and look sharp. And of course, not to mention the added safety benefits of wearing leather. With the Laurentian mountains and their swathes of maple trees across the river in Mattawa, the Temiskaming Loop in Northeastern Ontario has some of the most stunning reds we know of. Combine that with the quiet roads, good eats along the way, and more than a few great accommodations, this is a perfect long weekend trip for riders coming from the south and east. Half the loop is in Quebec, so it’s also a great loop for Francophone riders! Southwood Rd. 13 northwest off of Hwy 11 north of Severn Bridge into the heart of Bala. Up through Bala, Port Carling, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst, an area that is alive with the fall colours. A trip through Lake Baptiste into Bancroft, then Whitney and back through the Algonquin Park to Huntsville and down through Muskoka Falls. A personal favourite is the area around Cambridge and Paris. The roads are paved and scenery is spectacular. The Tim Hortons at 151 Dundas Street East in Paris is a popular gathering spot for caffeine-deprived bikers. The scenic countryside in around the Town of Mono, north of Orangeville runs about 45 minutes from Toronto. Head up Highway 10. Also try Buckhorn Road-Highway 507, and Peterson Road — Maynooth to Harcourt north of Bancroft. Forks of the Credit remains ever popular. Watch out for the noise police in Belfountain, or even try Hwy, 504 east of Apsley, then south on 46 to Havelock. Exit Hwy. 401 on Mill St, south of Newcastle and head to Lake Ontario. Follow Lakeshore Rd. to Port Hope, where it connects with Hwy. 2 beginning your trek towards Picton. Take Hwy 33 south from Trenton to Picton and on towards Lake on the Mountain where you take a ferry and continue along the shoreline to Kingston. Kitchener-Waterloo, the home of

Oktoberfest, offers some great motorcycling rides any time of the year, but no more so than the fall. Try the Homer Watson-Huron Rd. route and end up near the lovely little village of Shakespeare. While the ride around the big lake should never be entered into lightly, we’re hoping to inspire a few hardy riders who have their jacket liners and thicker gloves ready for some late season riding. If you’ve got the wherewithal, we guarantee you’ll be rewarded by a totally unique version of this bucketlist tour. The section between Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie should have some killer reds, and the views of the water make this totally different than any other ride in Ontario. It’s also probably a week long affair - we’re looking at you, you lucky retired riders! Algoma is the embodiment of fall, there’s no two ways about it. No other region or route bursts with as many of the fiery reds that so many of us associate with the quintessential Canadian fall. The Grand Algoma takes riders on a magnificent combination of long sweeping roads and mind-blowing colour up the Missinabi River Valley on Highway 129, and down what is perhaps Ontario’s most scenic highway; the Trans Canada between Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie. This is doable in a long weekend, and if you know what’s good for you, it’s the ride you’ll be doing this fall. If peace and tranquility are high on your list (and likely some of the clearest night skies and a chance to see the Northern Lights) then the Norwester Loop is a great choice. This area is heavily treed with boreal forests, for quiet twisty roads, and a sense of the fullness of nature before winter. If there was an award for most twisties per square mile, Ontario’s Highlands would win. The recently launched Ride the Highlands routes does a pretty bang-up job of putting all these curves into a semblance of order, with motorcycle-friendly places to sleep, eat and see cool stuff. They also have some very cool kickstand pads for riders. Since this area is south of Algonquin Park, we expect the colour to be quite vibrant here. No matter where you head out, have fun and ride safe. Tips for Fall Riding: 1) Check the weather forecast – the weather can turn quickly. 2) Appropriate clothing – to stay warm and comfortable and dry. 3) Watch for wet leaves – wet leaves are slippery so be cautious. 4) Wildlife can be more active in the autumn – always be on the lookout.

Pampas to the Andes Quite the Motorcycle Journey

“You’re on your own now. You are about to see more of my continent than I ever have. Be aware of the dangers, and enjoy the experience. We will hear all your stories soon!” The local Buenos Aires family gave us all hugs, and looked slightly skeptical about our ambitions. Should I have been more worried given our limited Spanish abilities motorbiking for two weeks through Argentina and Chile? As the locals drove off with farewell waves, the three of us looked towards the endless highway ahead and the rental motorcycles we would rely upon. The family had kindly escorted us through the maze of city toll-roads and traffic, and we were truly on our own now. The idea had originated several years before but never really taken shape until recently. Riding dual-sport motorcycles through the dramatic landscapes of Patagonia and the Andes had remained a hopeful dream. And then we decided to make it happen. Before I knew it, bikes and plane tickets were booked and I was on my way to Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Buenos Aires. The three of us had gone through flight training together years earlier and discovered a common bond in motorcycles and adventure travel. Marty happened to have family in Buenos Aires so that became our launching point, and gave us the added experience of staying with locals. He had arrived the week before to spend some extra time with his family, and Travis was flying from Florida the following day. Travis

did not have the luxury of acclimatizing to the city, for we whisked him straight from the airport to the rental shop. Whatever doubts I had about the trip evaporated immediately by the warmth and vitality of the family’s greeting, a common thread in my experience throughout Argentina and Chile. For a short time I was like a member of their family, despite being a distant friend of a distant relative. Motocare was a great rental shop full of BMW GS bikes, but we opted for the more economical Honda Transalp 700s. We loaded the panniers with camping gear and clothes, and rode a quick lap around the block to get accustomed to the bikes. Papers regarding ownership and rental contracts were provided for the upcoming border crossing into Chile. Buenos Aires is not a launching point for the faint of heart. Our three bikes struggled to remain together as we weaved through a maze of traffic, tolls and exhaust. At the outskirts of the city, with anxious farewells, our hosts wished us a safe return for the celebratory and much anticipated asado, a traditional Argentine BBQ. The open road beckoned. The three bikes rolled westward and the cityscape opened up to the vast Pampas, with riders and bikes angled into the wind, our constant companion. The urban traffic had slowly become only the occasional transport truck, with drivers waving, honking, and giving eager thumbsup. The excitement that others openly displayed for our journey only motivated us further for Ruta 40, the infamous gravel highway which would lead us south to Patagonia.

After several days of flatlands, the humid crops gradually gave way to dry plains. The dramatic peaks of the Andes emerged, and teased of impending trials and tribulations. We arrived in Mendoza, a beautiful city in the heart of wine country and a suitable place to rest. The winery and olive oil tours, great accommodations, and sidewalk beer gardens tempted a longer stay, but further adventures called. Rather than continue across the Andes we had spent so long pursuing, a left turn southward ensured they would remain by our side. The pavement ended and we knew we had arrived at Ruta 40. The gravel presented new challenges such as the need to ride in a standing position. After long hours of riding the scarcity of gas stations became apparent, with vehicles queued for several blocks with faint hopes of fueling before the pumps ran dry. Usually enough fuel could be spared to keep our engines turning, but flexibility with our itinerary became an essential traveler’s trait. Marty’s conversational knowledge of Spanish proved immensely helpful with securing accommodations, fuel, and meals. Argentine steaks and Malbec wine were a treat after a long day of riding, and a break from the usual gas station empanadas. As we neared Patagonia the relentless winds increased and the vastness of the land was only shared with the occasional flocks of sheep stretched along the remote stretch of highway. Camping on the gravelly banks of a meandering stream, with nighttime leading to campfires and eternal starry skies reminded me why we had embarked on this journey. Seeing a cave upon

the face of a nearby mountain, Travis and I climbed the steep slope and discovered a religious shine. Gazing out over the valley, our miniscule tent and bikes were the only sign of human life. Further southward and San Carlos de Bariloche greeted us with picture perfect views of towering mountains and glimmering jewels of lakes. This small ski town and chocolate capital provided the perfect respite after many miles of riding. A daily gathering of St. Bernard dogs and owners in the central plaza greeted us each morning, and the Cerro Catedral Ski Resort proved a great day-trip by bike without the heavy gear. As with many motorcycle enthusiasts, the “Motorcycle Diaries” of Ernesto “Che” Guevara partially inspired our trip. Although lacking the time to travel as far in scope as Che and his companion Alberto Granado (they took nine months), we wished to ride part of the same route. This reasoning led us to San Carlos de Bariloche, and to the nearby border crossing with Chile where Che had pretended to be a qualified leprosy expert. There were worker strikes occurring at the border with resulting long lines. The border soon opened however, and after a quick search of the bikes we were through. The volcanic activity of Chile became apparent as we headed back north, with a thin layer of ash covering the road. We headed for the coast and celebrated our arrival at the Pacific Ocean. “We crossed the continent!” Marty exclaimed. “It may not have been the widest part of the continent, but we crossed it.” After looking in vain for a suitable campsite, we stayed

in a B&B near the coast. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and offered to drive us to the beach so we could enjoy some Chilean beers in the setting sun. The draw of seeing a volcano closer up led us to the town of Pucón, a tourist destination for adventure travelers. The town is close to hot springs, hiking, horseback riding and many other outdoor pursuits, but we stayed on the bikes and attempted to ride as far up Volcán Villarrica as possible. As the narrow dirt road got steeper it also got softer with the layers of ash, and Marty’s bike eventually came to a halt with the wheels half-buried in ash. “I guess that’s the problem with motorbiking up active volcanos! I’m going to need your help boys!” he laughed, and it took three pairs of hands to get his bike turned around. Further up the coast Pichilemu was a memorable stop, mainly for the open coastline and surfing opportunities. We found a condo right on the beach, although there were several surf hostels in town, but at this point in the trip we wanted our own space. Travis and I found a small surfshop and rented some equipment for the day. After watching the experts carve up the waves on specialty boards, we headed for the tamer whitewash with our foam boards. After a while, Travis emerged from the waves with two pieces of surfboard in his hand. “I may be a beginner, but I don’t think this is supposed to happen! Am I on the hook for this?” Our journey took us through Santiago and to the colourful, quirky city of Valparaiso. It was artsy but also a rough port city, with the colorfully painted houses built onto impossibly steep hillside. We encountered an outdoor escalator, and a bustling market, but longed for our second Andes crossing back into Argentina. Chile Ruta 60 turned out to be some of the best riding of the entire trip. We climbed high into the Andes Mountains and changed from the hot temperatures of sea level to the cool alpine climate. Our carbureted bikes responded to the thin air by providing a noticeable lack of power, as we navigated tunnels, endless switchbacks, climbs and descents. We emerged back in Argentina and proceeded to make our way back to Buenos Aires. On our last night before arriving back on the east coast, Travis and I went to a local bar in Córdoba. The old men at the bar questioned who we were, and due to my lack of Spanish I pointed to a picture of a motorcycle and rider on my t-shirt. The shirt also said “Race to Dakar” on it, which the men immediately took to mean that we were riders in the Dakar race. Unable to suitably correct them, the free beers began to flow as they celebrated these daring racers. “I am only wearing the t-shirt!” I tried to exclaim. “We are riding bikes but have nothing to do with the race!” But we were misunderstood, intentionally or not, and the celebration continued. To conclude the trip we met back up with Marty’s family, and they treated us to an enormous BBQ the likes of which does not occur in Canada. Although from modest means, the father pulled out a large bottle of champagne with a proud grin and said “A toast to your safe return and to the adventurous spirit!” After all the scenery of Patagonia, the Andes, the coast, and the pampas, it is the warmth of the people that will remain with me.

Honda unveils 3 new concepts Only weeks from the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese manufacturer has unveiled a number of attractive new concept motorcycles that include a light and sporty twowheel and a spectacular three-wheel. The “Light Weight Super Sports Concept” has been introduced as the prototype for the brand’s future generation of sporty motorbikes with an aggressive esthetic and feather-light weight. However, there’s no in-

dication yet from Honda on the engine type or performance. Honda is also presenting a small electric scooter, the EV-Cube Concept, made to look decidedly retro, in line with the spirit of the brand’s older productions. The battery has been placed as far down as possible in order to lower the scooter’s center of gravity, guaranteeing the best balance possible. On the Honda stand, the Neowing will

be unmissable. The futuristic three-wheeler should provoke the same on-the-road sensations as a powerful motorcycle in sharp turns, all while remaining extremely stable at low speeds. The hybrid scooter will be equipped with a four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The Japanese brand will officially reveal the production-ready version of its long-awaited mass-market hydrogen-fuel cell vehicle at

the Tokyo Motor Show, a major rendez-vous for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Based on the FCV Concept, shown in various states of development at motor shows since 2013, it can cover a distance of up to 700km between hydrogen refuelings. The new model will be going on sale initially in Japan in March but Honda has plans to roll the car out globally. The 44th Tokyo Motor Show starts from October 30 to November 8.

A guy’s shop is the place in which everything happens. Be it a machine shop, woodworking shop or a home motorcycle shop, it is a guy’s refuge. Now, that’s not to say that girls can’t have their own version of a shop but, right now, I’m talking my shop. It’s the place where I can go to not be disturbed. It is my castle, in a sense, my kingdom. Each person has their own preference as to what happens in their shop, what purpose, if any, is achieved there but, as stated earlier, it is their kingdom. It only follows that, if it is your kingdom, you get to make the rules there. I mean what good is it being the king or queen of your own domain if you can’t make the laws of the land, or, at least, the room. As usual, I’m rambling a little so, let’s start at the beginning. When I got back into working on bikes, I was relegated to the back yard at first. This was fine but it does get a little difficult to locate dropped nuts and screws when they land in the long grass that remains uncut because you are too busy working on motorcycles. Then, you can’t cut the grass because there is a very important bolt that could be lost or ruined by the lawnmower. Now that I think of it, I should have kept using the back yard. At any rate, we do have a back cabin that has electricity. It started as a storage thing for the now neglected lawn mower and snow blower as well as various and sundry yard implements and toys. It has a step up of about 8 inches, that’s about 20 cm for you younger people, so with my advanced carpentry skills, I threw together a little ramp to run the bikes up. It wasn’t easy getting in though because the door was only about 28 inches wide and handle bars with mirrors attached tend to be about 34 inches across. It required a bit of twisting to gain access . It was too tough to push the bikes up and then do the afore mentioned twisting while getting my body through the door

board and hung my tools neatly on the wall, made oil puddles on the floor, oops, and found an old sound system to groove while tuning. Well, in truth it was mainly to at least muffle some of the curses emanating from my new abode. I spent the summer in there working, singing and cursing. It was heaven. Oh oh, we don’t have very long summers here in Cana-

kids’ bedrooms. I moved into the garage for the winter. It was uninsulated but warmer than the cabin. There was a heat vent going out there so it was only cold in there and not freakin cold like the cabin. I worked the winter in the unfriendly climes of the garage and without any loss of digits due to frostbite . There were a few problems with cleaners and paints through that first winter as far as odours in the house but it ended out with everyone still talking to each other around our house so I guess you could call that a success. The main thing was that I had established a beach head. All that was needed now were a few well- placed subtle hints and a few wishes. I started the next spring and summer in the cabin again but, my long suffering wife had come up with the idea, completely on her own of course, to make the garage into my new shop. Out to the local lumberyard we went and returned with a large load of 2 x 4’s and cheap chip board panels. Let’s not talk about my framing and hammering skills beyond the fact that the concrete floors were not level and each pre-assembled 8 foot framing section beyond that first one that I had measured for, had to be cut down to fit against the ceiling. Together we framed the walls, insulated them, this was my job because she knew of the pitfalls of fibreglass insulation and the resultant incessant itching, and finally panelled and painted them a soothing light yellow. I moved the peg board for the tools in, made a couple shelf units and was ready to get organized. You may remember from previous writings that I am not a particularly organized person. I remember seeing a poster once saying that an organized office was the sign of a sick mind. Therefore, you could say with complete confidence that I am not the possessor of a sick mind. You may have quite a problem getting that one past my wife though. The peg board is still immaculate and

I arrived home from work one day and my long suffering wife had the back yard full of junk from the cabin. She had torn down the dividing wall, painted the plywood floor and I now looked at the whole interior of the cabin. Still, I did have to share the space with the lawn mower and snow blower and a few, well, very many empty beer cases. Did I say that I am very lax at returning empties? That’s another story. I never claimed to be perfect. Here I was, my very own shop to work to my heart’s content on

each tool mounted on it is always in its correct position when not in use. This much is organized. The rest of the place looks like it has been hit by a tornado. I do have a shelf unit which has a few unlabelled bins containing parts. Of course, the parts are not itemized and, in order to find a specific one, I must rely on my less than perfect memory. There is a chemical section which has a variety of spray cans, tubes and bottles which is fairly easy to find anything in. I have a plastic container piled high with carbs and carb parts and another with carb guts like springs, slides and my custom-made pilot jet screwdriver. I do have a number of boxes on the top shelf labelled in magic marker with my hoard of Kawasaki H1 electrical parts. In the rest lie the remnants and the aftermath of the tornado. Parts boxes are piled every which way. Old rags litter the floor and extension cords of various colours crisscross to make intricate patterns worthy of a spider’s web. We had put down some indoor outdoor carpet which had been the aisle for our outdoor wedding many years before. The purpose had been to make my life warmer and more comfortable in the cool winter months. The reality here is that those carpets don’t do much for soaking up oil spills and are hard to vacuum off when covered in time aged grime from barn find motorcycles. Things that I often need such as a superbike stand and a hydraulic bike jack are skillfully placed along the wall. Yes, but just try to pull them along the floor over the web of extension cords. I now have a nice Bose unit for my ipod that can blast music to cover my curses of encouragement to the jack as I try to pull it to where it is needed. I can play only the music that I like. I don’t have to put up with hours of Neil Young and Cowboy Junkies, and again, no offence to those who love to be depressed beyond belief by their music. Every so often when there is a particularly extended period of heated discussion with a non-conforming nut or bolt, my wife will come to the closed door of the shop, push it open and stand on the threshold and say, “ Is there something wrong?” .She will not set foot inside because “ the floor is gross.” Yes Dear, I do like getting dirty. Yes, I will take my shoes off before coming into the house. Yes, and every so often I do try to clean the place up. I stand and look and then move stuff around but it never seems to result in the neatening of the place in any way. It simply re-arranges the chaos. Once a year, usually in the spring, I vacuum up the mess created by the buffing wheel. This thing creates a pile of crud inches deep and runs from the bench all the way up the wall and on to the floor in front. Hmm, bright idea, this could be the base for another column. Much to her surprise, I can find everything there. I can walk to a seemingly unorganized pile, reach in and extract the tool that she has asked for. I also know, usually , where any part is and can find it in the organized confusion of the shop. Yes, I could be neater. Yes, I could do a lot more cleaning. Yes, I could be more careful about what goes on to the floor and what leaks out of old bikes constantly. But heck, this is my shop. I am the ruler of my domain, my kingdom. She said I could be. See, I’m not sick. I am a King. I am just eccentric.

Bikers Against Abuse

I picked up a pamphlet for a group called B.A.C.A. at the 2015 Lucan Baconfest in July. This one really caught my eye. “Baconfest was a huge success for us,” says Bowzer, President of the B.A.C.A. London chapter (Bikers Against Child Abuse). “So much positive feedback.” B.A.C.A. had set up a custom motorcycle for parents to take pictures of thier children on - it was so popular, in fact, that some of the parents even wanted their picture with the bike but this was just for the children. “They were so incredibly excited that we were here in Canada,” he says. “Overall the experience that we had at Baconfest was overwhelming and it just exceeded all our expectations. We actually had some people request to be new members,” he said, with lots of handshakes and hugs all around. B.A.C.A. exists to create a safer environment for abused children, mainly by empowering kids to not feel afraid of the world in which we live. They accept the child into the club and give that child a sense of belonging and safety. This also sends a message to any alleged abuser. While B.A.C.A. doesn’t condone violence, they do make it clear they are willing to defend themselves. ASSESSING THE NEED Bowzer’s chapter started in July 2014. He disclosed his name to me but doesn’t want it printed for two reasons. One is security - so that some of the alleged perpetrators of abuse can’t try to turn the tables on the group and the other is simply because the kids love the road names. He says there are four Ontario chapters of B.A.C.A. - London, Niagara, Ottawa and Simcoe and there are more than a dozen more across Canada. In fact the group is global - with chapters across the United States and in nine countries. Bowzer says B.A.C.A. got started back in the mid 1980s in the U.S. and came to Saskatoon about 10 years ago. The Saskatoon president was the one who helped the London chapter get off the ground. “It has exploded over the last several years,” he says. And what happens if they run out of kids to help? “That would be the best day ever,” Bowzer says. “It’s a positive thing that we are here to help, but it’s an unfortunate situation that we are here to help.” BACKGROUND CHECK The chapter is in the process of undergoing a rigorous training program and when these guys say you need to prospect they mean it. The deal includes an extensive background check, fingerprints, and a year to 18-month training period - just to make sure you are serious about what you are getting into and in it for all the right reasons. “It’s not like you

just throw on a vest.” “I’d been in a riding group before,” says Bowzer. “When you get into the biker community you get to know other bikers.” And then this opportunity came along. He works as a private investigator (‘semi-retired’) and rides an all-black Harley-Davidson softail Night Train 100th Anniversary edition. He got his first taste of motorcycles about 15 years ago on a Honda Rebel 250 and was heavily into snowmobiling as well. B.A.C.A. has been involved in a support role for a number of local charities including Toys for Tots and another ‘ice cream challenge’ for children with autism and next season will hold its inaugural ‘100 Mile Ride’ - which other B.A.C.A. chapters do as well - to raise funds and awareness plus they are working on doing something to assist the cause of murdered child Tori Stafford. Bowzer says the biker and wider community have had nothing but open arms for the group and applaud their dedication and sacrifice. MAKING A DIFFERENCE Bowzer relates the story once where some members of BACA London were at a Timmies and were welcomed with open arms. “It was almost like we were rock stars,” Bowzer laughs. He’s also proud to note they are the only club allowed to wear their vests into the courthouse in London. Bowzer shared a few poignant anecdotes to me including one where a teen approached him, shook his hand and simply said he wished they were around when he needed them for a friend. Another concerned an attempted child abduction near Parry Sound which his group helped foil along with police and frantic parents after a few hours of searching. The vests and ‘biker’ look give B.A.C.A. power in the eyes of the children. They go through a ceremony where each member of the chapter hugs a toy bear to ‘empower’ it and then they give it personally to the child - with the promise that whenever it needed more powering up to just contact B.A.C.A. You don’t have to be a biker or member to contact B.A.C.A. for help - they are there for everyone. The abuse is often physical or sexual but sometimes mental, Bowzer says, and they qualify each call through contacting a parent or guardian. “A child is a child in our point of view so we help them all,” says Bowzer. Tough Return to the United States for Szoke 10 time Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike Champ had his sights set high while his Mopar Express Lane/BMW Motorrad backed rig was pointed south for the final event of the Moto America series held at New Jersey Motorsports Park just outside of Millville NJ, United States. With huge success up north, Szoke was confident his return to American competition, during Moto America’s introductory season, would be fortunate. Unfortunately the latter would be victorious. Plagued with mechanical problems throughout the weekend, Szoke had trouble getting the speed he desired as quickly as he required despite this being his first visit to the 2.25 mile 12 turn road course. Szoke qualified 13th on the grid for the Two-Race finale held both on Sunday afternoon. Weather tormented the weekend with spattering of rain throughout Race One causing the race to be red flagged and restarted. “ I rolled out of it a bit after it started to rain, I was there to have fun, and didn’t want to take too many chances when it was slippery and bring my bike (or myself) home in pieces.” said Szoke. Jordan’s Canadian spec BMW was competing in the Superstock class and finished 9th in his class, 15th overall, during Race One. “We just couldn’t get over the hump in timing.” said a frustrated Szoke. “Once we finally found the problem we were having after the first race on Sunday we were really pumped to have some dry

weather and a sound set up for the Race Two in the afternoon.” Ohlins suspension guru Jon Cornwell discovered Szoke’s fork to have a broken o-ring causing no compression dampening and heaps of front end problems. Race Two came to an abrupt end as Szoke ended up in the gravel trap as his chances for redemption came to a screeching halt. “I got a great start and was right up there with the lead Superstock pack until my bike was blown right out from under me. I got hit so hard from behind I was flying through the air. I was really lucky not to get run over. Now I’m bruised up, hurt my elbow, wrecked my leathers and made a mess of my beautiful motorcycle.” said a disappointed Szoke enroute home on the I-95. “This was one of my worst AMA Nationals ever, my first crash since I fell in a Q session in Canada back in 2012! But that’s racing and that’s the way it goes sometimes.” “BMW Motorrad helped us get down to compete in the final weekend for Moto America, so a huge thanks to them for giving me this opportunity. I truly hope we can do it again in 2016.” finishes Szoke. Jordan is still leading the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy with an advantage of 40 points. With his season completed there will be no opportunity for him to collect any more points in the championship. With the championship closing Nov 22nd, let’s hope a Perfect Season was enough to claim the world’s most innovative motorcycle racing series.

Movistar Yamaha claims first team title since 2010 Movistar Yamaha’s eighth double podium of the season at Aragon meant they lifted the MotoGP™ Team World Championship title. Jorge Lorenzo’s 60th GP victory and his teammate Valentino Rossi’s 209th premier class podium ensured that the Movistar Yamaha team got their hands on the Team World Championship with four races still to go. It was the first time that had lifted the title since 2010 and in the process they brought an end to the dominance of the Repsol Honda team who have won it for the last four seasons. Lorenzo has six victories to his name while Rossi has four, meaning that the team have won 10 of the 14 races so far this season in a year that has seen the Yamaha M1 become a force to be reckoned with once more. The two Movistar Yamaha riders sit on top of the MotoGP™ World Championship standings with Rossi leading Lorenzo by just 14 points after the Gran Premio Movis-

tar de Aragón. Jorge Lorenzo: “I‘m very proud of the team and very proud of the work that everyone from Yamaha did in Japan. They worked on all aspects but especially on corner entry. That was our main weakness over the previous years. This Team World Championship title, that we secured already four races before the end of the season, means a lot to us. It‘s been an unbelievable year from the results to the performance of the bike and we are very happy.” Valentino Rossi: “The Team World Title is a great achievement for everybody, because all the team, all the engineers were able to improve the M1 and gave us a great bike. We did a great step compared to last year and compared to Honda also, especially. It is also a great achievement for the riders, because we always care about this and this year me and Jorge were able to win a lot of points and arrived in front a lot of the time. So everybody in the team is very happy.”

Viñales: “The machine has more potential” A difficult start to the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon limited the MotoGP™ rookie’s progress in the race, ending 11th. Starting down in 12th, Maverick Viñales was ready for a hard fight in Aragon, but found the early laps difficult as several riders around him had opted for softer tyre, allowing them to start strong. The Team Suzuki Ecstar rider found himself floundering outside the points in 17th at mid race distance before his tyres and solid race

pace began to come into effect. Slowly but surely, Viñales picked his way through the field to a steady 11th, where he would remain till he crossed the line. It was an overall positive race for Suzuki as Viñales’ teammate Aleix Espargaro ended the day in sixth. This positive upward swing for both Suzuki riders has the entire team filled with confidence for the final four rounds of the 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship.

Riedmann Makes Bol D’Or Debut in France this Weekend Reigning and two time Hindle Pro Sport Bike CSBK National Champion Kenny Riedmann will compete aboard an Atomic Motorsport Suzuki GSXR1000 this weekend in the Superstock class at the famed 24 Hour Bol D’Or event at Circuit Paul Ricard in the south of France. Riedmann’s best lap in the second qualifying session put his team 21st overall, and 11th in class, for the start of the race on Saturday, September 19. His effort is considered a strong debut since Riedmann is new to this type of racing, as well as the bike, team and venue. Riedmann is expected to be the “clean up hitter”, riding third in the three man rotation, usually with worn tires. Each stint is expected to last in the 45 minute

range, with fuel mileage poor at Circuit Paul Ricard thanks to the mandated 24 litre gas tank and very high speed straightaway. Regular Riedmann Tuner Scott Cameron is on hand from Canada to assist with the Atomic Suzuki program. Riedmann indicated through his father, former racer Roland, that the bike is detuned compared to his regular Mopar CSBK Superbike Kawasaki, no surprise given the demanding nature of the day and night event. The two time Hindle Pro Sport Bike Champ for Triumph also had to adjust to starting each session with the machine fully loaded with fuel. This year’s event marks the 79th running of the French classic, returning to the Mediterranean coast near Le Castellet. Originally held at Le Mans, the

event moved to Circuit Paul Richard in the 1970s, then more recent to Mangy Cours. This is the first time the Bol has run at its most famous host venue, Paul Richard, in 15 years. The venue is 5.861 kms in length, including a famously long Mistral straight than covers 1.3 km and allows the big bikes to run on full throttle for 13 seconds. The track is famous for warm weather and a crazy party atmosphere. Riedmann’s team, listed on the score sheets as “Atomic 68,” includes regular FIM Endurance World Championship competitors Stephane Egea and Giovanni Bussei. In Qualifying, the three turned best laps within a few tenths of each other: Riedmann at 2:02.6, Egea at 2:02.9 and Bussei with a lap at 2:03 flat.

Dovizioso: “I am pleased and not pleased” Andrea Dovizioso left wanting more from the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon, fifth in the race proving there’s still areas to improve. A solid fifth place greeted Andrea Dovizioso at the end of the Aragon GP, over 24 seconds behind race winner Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha). This came after an incredibly disappointing 13th place start, the Italian battling hard on the opening laps to claw his way to seventh. Within the opening four laps the rider from Forli, Italy had made his way to fifth where he would remain for the remainder of the race, the leaders having escaped. The top five result was important as Dovizioso was able to gain several points back on Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), who finished the race down in eighth, as they battle for fifth in the MotoGP™ World Championship. Despite this, the Ducati Team rider was left wanting more and is eager to continue improving his GP15 Ducati, especially under braking. Dovizioso knows there is more speed in both himself and the bike and is eager to end 2015 on a high note and return to the podium in the dry once again. Andrea Dovizioso: “Let’s say that I am pleased and not pleased at the same time. With the race pace that I had, I think I managed to bring home the best possible result, but this doesn’t make me happy. For sure we have to work to improve the bike, because I am unable to brake and ride the way I want, and as a result I am not as fast as I would like to be. If I look at today’s race however, considering that I was starting from thirteenth on the grid, finishing fifth is a good result.”

Espargaro: “My gear didn’t engage and I was in neutral” Gearbox issues plague Pol Espargaro at the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon, but he remains positive of further success. The 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship season has not gone to plan for Pol Espargaro, four DNFs and a multitude of issues have left him with just 88 points in the World Championship standings. But, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider remains upbeat and is continuing to take each race as it comes.

Bikers on Bond - What a Blast For those who attended, all would say that Bikes on Bond was a great way to spend their day.

On Saturday August 8th 2015, at 2 pm the motorcycles started to roll in. Some were destined for the Show and Shine while others were lining the streets. The owners welcomed the locals with their many questions about the various motorcycles they were seeing, happy to share their love for riding.

Many motorcycle enthusiasts got up in the morning and went for a nice leisurely ride ending up in Oshawa at Bikes on Bond. From vintage motorcycles, to custom orders and everything in between, we had it all at this event. Everyone had such a great time, people have already been asking when we Bikes on Bond will be in 2016. With so much enthusiasm for this event, we have already selected the date. This free event had live music by some great local bands, motorcycle vendors as well as an opportunity to meet up with old and meet new friends.

Come out and join us for Bikes on Bond 2016 on Saturday 13 August, rainout date is Sunday 14 August.

911 Ride - A Roaring Success

Each year, the Canada 911 Foundation holds an annual motorcycle ride, Canada’s 911 Ride. This amazing twoday ride took place a few weeks ago and went amazingly well with lots of fun, tears, and roaring noise. The event’s route went through Niagara Falls, Niagara-On-The-Lake, Grimsby and wine country. The ride was very picturesque with lots of winding roads which was great for the bikers. The best part was the police escort along the Don Valley, Gardener Expressway, QEW, and the 407. It was quite the sight!

The Mikey Network donated 4 MIKEY AEDs along the way. The first went to The Central Community Church in St. Catharines. The second was donated in memory of fallen officer Joseph Mellen from Niagara Region. The third and fourth went to the Niagara Parks Commission for placement in the Niagara Region. All recipients were very grateful to receive their MIKEYS. They now have peace of mind that should a sudden cardiac arrest event occur among one of their community members, help is close at hand for a second chance at life. In the eight years we have participated in the Canada’s 911 Ride, we have been able to provide close to 100 MIKEY AEDs through donations totaling almost $200,000. Canada’s 911 ride said they greatly appreciate all that we have done for them over the years. The 911 Ride has grown substantially since they started. They now have an East Coast ride through New Brunswick and next year the ride will be in Halifax. They are even talking about organizing a ride in Edmonton in two years. See you again next year!

My first thoughts were of my family and then I thought… this can’t be happening now, the “Ride for MS” is in September! Well, life throws those curves at you to see how you handle them. Fortunately I am blessed with the best Volunteers anyone could ask for. They ALL came forward and told me to step back as they would take care of the “Ride for MS” this year and for however long is needed. So, I stepped back and saw the event from a different perspective! This year there were 75 bikes and 159 for dinner which brings the unofficial funds raised in 2015 to $12,520…. bringing the 7 year to date total to over $55,000! All funds raised stay local to be specifically used to help subsidize the purchase of mobility equipment and repairs to same, if needed. Last year $10,000 was raised and these funds were reported, by Past Chair David Bishop, to be used to help purchase 3 wheelchairs, extra batteries and to help with ongoing maintenance to other wheelchair mobility devices. This year the route started out at the Leaf in Windsor where registration took place as well. Then off to Crabby Joe’s in Essex, then on to Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville. Heading back now, the next stop was at Mr. Biggs in Belle River then onto The Sandbar in Puce. With all stops visited, time to head out to the Columbus Center in South Windsor for Dinner and FUN! Dinner was excellent and everyone did have fun winning the 94 auction prizes and 64 door prizes, all donated by businesses in our community! A BIG Thank you to those who donated prizes, made pledges, our Sponsors, the participants in the ride, those that joined us for dinner and last but certainly not least… the Volunteers. I learned this year that any event is only as good as their Volunteers! This year I was able to attend the event but had to wear a protective mask. Oh, that was fun! Then I thought I wanted a group picture of my Volunteers but with a hitch. THEY would have to wear masks so I could take mine off! They all were more than happy to accommodate! The “Ride for MS” formally had its name changed to “Shar’s Ride for MS” which was agreed to by everyone at the dinner so from this point forward, a new logo will be made soon and the event will be called “Shar’s Ride for MS” being held on the 3rd Sunday in September annually.
