Wrench Against the Machine Mix - 0/35/85/0

Wrench Against The Machine TV series premieres on Esquire Network in November. Get your motor runnin’! Below, watch a preview of the new Wrench Against the Machine TV show, premiering on Esquire Network, Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 9:00pm ET/PT. The first season’s six hour-long episodes each follow two teams of three expert motorcycle builders competing headto-head with only three days and $3,000.00 to transform basic motorcycles into custom creations. Wrench Against the Machine features head judge, Roland Sands, founder of Roland Sands Design, and motorcycle designers, Michael Woolaway and Alan Stulberg. In the most grueling, seemingly impossible build challenge in the motorcycle world, each hour-long episode will have two teams of three expert builders battling headto-head with only three days and $3,000 to transform basic stock motorcycles into rowdy, riding, works of art. Some of the most prestigious bike builders in the country will be putting their reputations on the line in the ultimate test of creativity and craftsmanship to impress. The 72 hours of round-the-clock wrenching will take viewers deeper into the teamwork, the problem solving, and the creativity of the process that brings these bikes to life. New teams and new build challenges will be featured in each episode, as fabricators will be tasked with building café racers, choppers, bobbers, and beyond. At the end of the 3 days, the expert judges will test and evaluate the custom rides, crowning the winning team with the coveted “wrench” and the losing team’s bike. https://youtu.be/EYA9Xz3ponE

2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber Triumph’s roots may have been laid in the UK, but the British company isn’t afraid to look elsewhere for inspiration when designing new models. The 2017 Bonneville Bobber is proof. It’s also a really, really cool addition to the current Bonneville line. Inspired by the American-born bobbers that grew to popularity in the 1930s-on, the 2017 Bobber has a low stance, stripped back, and seat that’s actually adjustable between two positions—low and back, and high and forward. Bobbers have always been about light weight (that’s the reason for ditching the fenders and unnecessary body panels)

and big power, so Triumph have updated the power delivery on the Bobber, too. Its 1200cc high-torque engine is the same specs-wise, but electronic updates and a new dual airbox/filter design enables it to produce more torque and power down low, when compared to the T120. To complete the bobber look, Triumph has outfitted this Bonneville with caged swingarm, battery box with stainless steel strap, bar end mirrors, wide/flat handlebar, and rear mudguard loop. The tank is actually reshaped when compared to the T120, too; it’s smaller and more compact. Other noteworthy updates include a

shock that’s mounted underneath the seat and works on a specially designed linkage, plus updated fork that’s shorter than the T120’s, “Which we can do because there will only ever be one person on the bike,” Triumph says. Less weight means you need less travel for the same level of compliance and bump absorption. Like the rest of the bikes in the Bonneville lineup, it will come with everything from riding modes (Road and Rain) to switchable traction control, ABS, and a torque-assist clutch. Color options include Ironstone (with a matte finish), CONTINUED ON P.03

Colours, Twisties and Traffic A few weeks ago, the sun was shining bright, the leaves were starting to turn and there was a hint of fall in the air. It was the perfect day to throw a leg over my ride and take to the road. With no destination plans - which normally turn out to be the best rides by the way, I met up with a few riding friends at a local coffee establishment. After much discussion about who was going to lead the ride, we headed out, northward to explore roads I haven’t ridden in years. As you might have guessed, it was decided that I take the lead, arrgh! Lost that vote by a slim margin of just one vote, oh well so be it, anyway, the good thing is I get to go where I want, instead of being stuck at the back and saying to myself ‘we should have turned there’. The funny thing about some of the friends I ride with is that during the summer we tend to travel to the same places week after week and never really take any chances on discovering new roads. After all isn’t that what makes riding fun? Finding that perfect road with just the right amount of twisties to keep an ear to ear grin plastered on your face? If you ask me, I think it is. Now of course not every road ventured down will produce good results, every now and then I have found myself turning down some country road, only to find out that I had stumbled onto the straightest road in

Ontario. God I hate when that happens, especially when riding with a friend and you get the look at each progressive stop sign - as if to say, great choice Haas, what’s next gravel roads? or maybe even the 401 or are we gonna go back the same way? Ya win some, ya loose some. Anyway, on this most recent of rides, I choose all the right roads - rolling hills, twisties, stretches of wide open road, switch backs, they were perfect for an early fall ride of colour. For the next few hours we carved our way in a north easterly direction until we arrived at the village of Belfountain at the Forks of the Credit. After idling in bumper to bumper traffic for about a half hour or more, we needed a pit stop. The Belfountain General Store seemed a likely place to fill the void in my stomach. I don’t remember it being this slammed with congestion. Years ago, riders would run the forks from Belfountain to Hwy 10 and back again as many times as possible in a day. Now they face horrifically slow urbanlike congestion. Not to mention the police presence at every turn. Many of the roads we used have now been restricted or barricaded. Minivans and SUV’s filled with every family member, find it necessary to stop at every second tree or bend in the road to take another memorable selfie or a family portrait. All of which, back up traffic from one end of the forks to the oth-

er aggravating every rider who has travelled from great distances to ride this stretch of road. Not the best place to test your chicken strips, anymore. Ok, well maybe it’s not that bad, I am sure one can probably run this road with very little traffic on Tuesday or Wednesday around 2 o’clock during the second week of November. Despite the traffic at the Forks, the day was a great success in terms of finding great roads and enjoying the refreshing fall air (that’s how I describe riding with a windchill) and the start of the colours changing. If you are planning to continue to ride till the snow flies, remember, leaves are as slippery as ice and snow. Despite the forecast temperature, be prepared when you ride with layers to stay warm. Windchill now becomes a bone chilling factor you need to consider when you ride and don’t forget to check tire pressure, they tend to drop during colder weather and could compromise the handling of your ride. On a completely different topic, in the interest of keeping things fresh and interesting, we would like to welcome David Rusk, Kiril Lazarevski, Bill Coach and The Swans’ to our family of writers. We look forward to being entertained with what’s on your mind and the experiences you choose to share with us. Have fun and stay alive.

AeroStich Unveils AD-1 Pants The new Aerostich AD-1 is a waterproof all-weather advanced-technology protective pant suitable for all types of riding. They provide the classic jeans-cut fit, meaning the waist will fall at about the same location as the belt-line of your jeans (vs. Aerostich’s similar-looking Darien Pants which fit like khaki pants). Full-length separating side zippers help the pants go on and off fast and feature inner and outer weather flaps to keep rain and wind out. Dual waistband side-snaps provide a custom-adjustable fit for all-season comfort and the front zippered fly features a seam sealed inner gusset for enhanced water resistance. These pants also include a removable Aerostich Money Belt (#1854) and a gusseted crotch which allows greater all-day comfort for moving around in the saddle. AD-1s are available in two versions, regular and ‘light’, to better meet your exact requirements. The regular HT600D Nylon version uses a super strong and highly abrasion resistant three layer GORE-TEX® fabric (#165) which is extra-long wearing. The AD-1 Lights (#308) are lighter and slightly cooler and use a HT200D Nylon GORETEX®. These are about two thirds as abrasion resistant as the regular AD-1’s and well suited for commuting and urban riding applications. The features and fit are the same for both versions. Removable, custom-positionable oversize TF3 knee armor provides superior

impact protection, and several styles of optional hip pads available separately to mate with the provided hook and loop areas.

Large Scotchlight® reflective ankle/calf adjustment tabs increase rear-conspicuity at night and feature radial hook and loop adjustments. Both main pockets have hook and loop cover flaps so you won’t lose your change or bike keys when the pants are laid over the back of a chair. A generous verticalzippered cargo pocket is located on top of the right thigh and a horizontal opening flapped cargo pocket is on top of the left thigh for additional storage. Both versions are available in even waist sizes, 30–46, in regular and long lengths in Black, Grey or Tan. For more info aerostich.com.

Kawasaki reveal new Z1000 R Edition Kawasaki have just revealed in the UK an ‘R Edition’ version of their naked Z1000 street bruiser as a new-for-2017 model. The Z1000 R Edition gets some superbikelevel trinkets to spice it up, too. First up is the addition of a set of Brembo 310mm Brembo floating front discs, complete with lateral grooves for improved heat dissipation, which are gripped by a pair of fat Brembo M50 monobloc calipers. And feeding them fluid is a set of stainless steel braided brake lines for improved performance and consistency. Adding a little more finesse to the Zed’s suspension is the addition of a flash of gold and yellow – in the form of an Öhlins S46DR1S fully-adjustable shock, with remote preload adjuster. While the hardware is unchanged at the front, Kawasaki say they’ve introduced revised settings to ensure it matches the rear Öhlins’ action. In terms of electronics, there are revised ECU settings to deliver a smoother power curve, the addition of a digital gear position

indicator, and an adjustable shift-light that illuminates the rev counter display as the preset rpm limit is reached. The R Edition gets its own Metallic Spark Black and Metallic Graphite Grey paintscheme, with a ‘special graphic package’, seat material embossed with the Z logo and further individual touches adding to an incredible visual appearance.

Supposedly, the standard Z1000 will still be available in 2017, and is rumoured to will come in two new colours: Metallic Spark Black and Golden Blazed Green as well as Candy Burnt Orange and Flat Ebony. Pricing is due to be announced soon, while bikes are expected to arrive at UK dealers sometime January. No word as to how soon we will see it here in Canada.

BMW’s futuristic self-balancing motorcycle is like a real-life Batman’s Batpod

BMW is celebrating their 100-year anniversary in style, with futuristic vehicle concepts designed to wow and inspire. They just unveiled their BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100, a zero emissions motorcycle offering a host of fancy connectivity features. As BMW unveiled the design in movie mecca Los Angeles, their Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 reminds many of the sleek superhero motorcycles that have zoomed across the big screen.

The Motorrad is made of carbon fiber and polished aluminium. A triangular frame hearkens back to BMW motorcycles of the past, such as the company’s first motorcycle, the R32, made in 1923. The futuristic motorcycle is equipped with a self-balancing function, to boost safety and stability. The motorcycle was designed with an emphasis on balancing safety and freedom. The designers wanted riders to feel the wind without helmets or bulky protective clothing so they put a “digital companion” into the motorcycle to minimize crashes and enhance safety. The digital companion can intervene if necessary. Sensor technology built into the motorcycle provides information to ensure safety.

Instead of a helmet, Motorrad motorcyclists wear a visor that provides information from the motorcycle triggered by eye movements. If a rider looks up, they’ll see what they would see in a rearview mirror. If they look slightly down, they’ll be able to access a menu. Looking down further opens a map. If they look straight ahead, the visor clears so it doesn’t inhibit a rider’s view. Wearables also augment the freeing experience. BMW designed light clothing that includes A/C and neck support provided via air. Vibrating elements on the arms of the superhero-like outfit offer navigational signals. According to BMW, the Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 “catapults you into the 40s of the 21st century.”

Ducati recalls XDiavel motorcycles

Ducati North America has issued a recall involving certain model year 2016-2017 XDiavel motorcycles due to potentially loose fastening screws. In affected bikes, the side stand plate lower fastening screw on the affected motorcycles may not be sufficiently tightened, causing the stand to fail and the bike to fall. Additionally, during normal use on the road, the loosening of the lower screw

could cause damage to the side stand sensor switch, causing the engine to stall. If the lower stand place screw becomes loose it can cause the bike to fall, or the engine to stall, increasing the risk of injury or a crash. Ducati will notify owners, and dealers will replace the side stand pivot and side stand plate fastening screw, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 7, 2016. Contact your local dealer for info.

Changes to Ontario auto insurance How will it effect you. In an effort to comply with a provincial promise to make auto insurance premiums more affordable, auto insurance coverage changed on June 1, but along with lower-cost premiums will be cuts in coverage, warn industry experts. “Some benefits and coverage have been reduced, some options for increased coverage have been eliminated or changed, and some new options have been introduced,” warned the Financial Service Commission of Ontario. Though the new rules took effect June 1, changes won’t affect individual policy-holders until their policies come up for renewal. The most significant change will be to medical and rehabilitation care, which will be combined with attendant care as a single benefit for both catastrophic and non-catastrophic claims. The changes mean that: For non-catastrophic injuries, the current medical and rehabilitation care policy ($50,000) and attendant care ($36,000) will be combined and claimable up to $65,000 with the option of increasing the benefit to $130,000. For catastrophic injuries, the current medical and rehabilitation care ($1,000,000) and attendant care policies ($1,000,000) will be combined, and benefits up to $1,000,000 will claimable. Individuals will also have the option to increase this coverage to $2,000,000 for an extra monthly fee. That means people who are seriously injured might not have enough coverage for a lifetime of rehabilitation. In the event that you are in a catastrophic accident, we know that just in support services people would need, you’re looking at $6,000 a month. In a period of 13 years or so you’ve probably exhausted that million dollar limit. Not enough awareness Despite efforts by the province and insurance brokers to inform consumers, many drivers are unaware of the coming changes. The Financial Service Commission of Ontario recommends that when drivers receive their next policy renewal package to read the changes carefully, compare it to the previous year’s document and shop around. Not all changes are bad Some of the changes will end up saving drivers money. Those changes include a reduction in the fees insurers charge for monthly, instead of annual, insurance premiums from three per cent to 1.3 per cent. And minor collisions, like a fenderbender will no longer be considered an at-fault accident if damages are less than $2,000 and no one was hurt.

The world’s most inspired has become even more desired.

designed KYB piggyback rear shock, Yamaha’s D-Mode system, aluminum fuel tank, slimmer magnesium rear subframe, and optional Quick Shift System The 2017 YZF-R6 takes heavy styling cues from the YZF-R1 with a race-ready front fairing with LED headlights, slim LED position lights, and new rear tail section. BMW K 1600 B premieres in LA

LA, the final stop during its Vision 100 presentations, aside from looking to the future, BMW has a some more immediate vehicles to show off as well. One of the most eye catching is its new K 1600 B. Inspired by the idea of a motorcycle being driven down an endless highway, the K1600B looks to emulate the bagger style of motorcycles that are popular. The motorcycle features a 6-cylinder inline engine that sports an output of 160 horsepower at 7,750 RPM with a maximum torque of 175 nm at 5,250 RPM. That bagger influence can be seen in the lower rear frame, dropped passenger seat, along with the fixed side cases, integrated lights, and a shorter windshield that offers electric adjustment. BMW has also outfitted the K 1600 B with chromeplated parallel silencers and a folding rear mudguard that looks to make wheel removal easier. The BMW K 1600 B certainly looks like a sleek bike, but that isn’t all BMW has planned for this event. So stay tuned.

Imagine a car that is also two motorcycles

You know you have been there. Stuck on the freeway or the boulevard during rush hour, inching along, listening to the traffic report, drumming your fingers on the steering wheel, when out of your peripheral vision you spy someone zipping by. The motorcycle, or scooter, or moped (if they are kicking it old skool) darts ahead of you, glides and weaves, doing the one thing that you are not doing: moving. It is easy to imagine the freedom, the efficiency, but cars are a useful evil. They transport things and other people. It is a problem. What if there was a car that was also two motorcycles? Austin, Texas-based Argo Design does not think this is impossible. They call their design the Lane Splitter. It would be equipped with six tires, and built on two chassis that could either function separately as two three-wheeled motorcycles, or locked together to form one four-wheeled, two-seater vehicle.

1290 Super Duke R Special Edition RAW, PURE AND BEYOND REASON King of the jungle, beating its chest with a hair-raising rumble. Wild on the face of it, but just as refined as the original within. And packing a knockout PowerParts punch. The result is lightweight and tailor-made, with an Akrapovič silencer howling for more and an exclusive paint job screaming for attention. From you, the boss.

Visit an Authorized Dealer for more details In an unusual design move, each motorcycle is asymmetrical, rounded on one side, and flat on the other. The two motorcycles are mirror images of each other that lock together on their respective flat sides to form the two-seater. The sleek design features a lid that opens and closes vertically, which encapsulates drivers and passengers, though apparently the windows would open as well. As conceived, the body could be made using a 3D printer, which also offers the possibility of making it in any color. Drive partway to work with your sweetie. Use the motorcycle to run a quick errand, or loan one out to a friend. Shorten your commute. Don’t get too excited yet; as of now, the Lane Splitter is merely an idea on a very advanced drawing board. There is no word yet how the vehicle(s) would be powered, what they might cost, or how safe they would be. Keep an eye out. You might spy a prototype on the road someday, cruising right on by you. Then what would you be thinking.

Now in Guatemala we had our eyes open to see the changes of the new country. Like much of Mexico, the small town was alive with activity, but also contradictions. The buildings were colourful but faded, the streets vibrant yet grimy, and the life seemed simple while terribly chaotic. The change in landscape was subtle yet profound. We rode along the bottom of near-vertical valley walls bordering a thin river that continued to carve out the rock beneath its rapids. The roads were complete with all of Mexico’s disorder but somehow more. Yes there were still families crammed into the back of pickups, but there were now teenagers clinging to the top of busses, their body weight helping to hold down loosely packed cargo. We spent a night in Huehuetenango before an adventurous day climbing higher and higher into the mountains. Before long the pavement was buckled in areas, folded like an accordion, and completely washed out in others leaving only a crust of asphalt above the plummeting valleys below. Soon the road was all but gone. Deep ruts, continuous bumps, and big rocks leaped out at our front tires, punching them to one side or another to dictate the route we would take up the continuously steep, tight corners. Somehow trucks of all shapes and

The Alaskentina Motorcycle Team

sizes were coming towards us, adding to the excitement. Eventually we were back on the pavement and spent the night in Los Amates despite a local’s dire warnings of danger and crime. Crossing into Honduras was an adventure to say the least. After completing part of the process, we were sent a few kilometres past the border, down a sandy road to find a pharmacy in order to get the required photocopies. The old scanner was slow and as you might expect, it broke about 10 pages into the 45-page job. Finally we doubled back to the passport office, only to re-enter Honduras, this time being stopped at the border to show our documents. Crossing over many bridges that spanned clear creeks and muddy rivers, descending off the eastern slopes of the jungle hills, we watched cattle drink from the running water and passed old concrete pillars, long having since been required to support a bridge, stand moss-covered disrupting the flow of water that trickled towards the Caribbean Sea. As we ate breakfast by the sea, the greyblue water had only the slightest bit of movement, the small waves only frothing at the shore’s edge leaving the infinite remainder with the dented waxy finish that only gently disrupted water can offer, the sun glinting quickly and often off the surface. We passed through the Amrican-

ized city of San Pedro Sula and the dirty Capital of Teguciga before stopping for what would be our only night in Honduras just outside Siguatepque at the Hotel Americanito. It was cheap, run down and rough around the edges – a perfect Alaskentina spot. The next day, we made our way to the Nicaraguan border, riding a few hours along wide, sweeping turns up gentle slopes up and down the hills. The border crossing included fumigation, passports, fees, motorcycle importation, insurance and a toll were all taken care of along a circuitous path between different buildings and shacks. At one point our temperature was even taken! Maybe for Zika we thought… Our progress was going well, and we were feeling better and better about making it to Panama in time for our sailboat so we decided to have an early night and spend a few days in Nicaragua. Esteli was the first town we came across, and we found a nice hostel with a courtyard big enough for our bikes. We spent the night wandering the town and chatting to some fellow travellers with whom we shared the hostel. The next stop was the beautiful colonial town of Granada. On the way we drove though flat plains that made for beautiful farmland. More free-range chickens, and more locally grown pigs wandered the roadside. More horses tethered by homemade bridles to tree trunks and fence posts with long lengths of twiney rope through the long thick grass. More cows with long drooping ears pinned to twisted pointed horns, following each other in lines along the ditch with sombrero-clad men whipping and prodding the big beasts with long knotted sticks. We were never too far from a town or settlement, and at one point came across a young kid riding a bike, clutching to the back of a big truck for a free ride. After the truck had to make a funny manoeuvre, he had to let go. Dom tried to pick him up but it didn’t quite work. Tym and Ben each had a turn pulling the youngster for about 15km, at one point reaching 70kph when our unorthodox passenger indicated he’d like to pass the truck that was slowing usdown! We continued to pass roadside vendors, wooden crates spilling over

with lemons and limes and bounties of other melons and fruit until we reached Granada. Another early day! We had time to have a beer by the small pool and speak with a handful of Montrealers who ran the place. We wandered the streets, finding a nice restaurant which lost power minutes after we sat down. It didn’t stop them from cooking a delicious meal that we ate, sharing a few bites with the street kids selling bracelets and necklaces. We spent the next few days exploring the bustling surf town of San Juan Del Sur and the volcanic island called Ometepe which sits in Lago Nicaragua in the southwest corner of the country. We wanted to see the Waterfall of San Ramón on Volcán Maderas, and when we got there we opted to ride our bikes up the first two kilometres of the four kilometre path, not knowing what it held in store for us. In hindsight we should have expected the hugely steep, single track, rutted out path, but we didn’t even think about it. As we got closer to the dark clouds that dared us upwards with a light rain, we navigated banked corners paved with thin flat stones that were slippery with the light coat of water. Feathering the clutch up this path, it was a constant battle between maintaining speed in second gear, and avoiding obstacles in first. We parked under the cover of leafy apricot trees that protected us slightly from the rain but created their own hazard, namely falling apricots that Tym discovered with his head. The waterfall was breathtaking, and though it offers only a whisper of sound despite the 50m drop it is full of splendour as the stream trickles and mists overtop of the cliff, cascading down the vertical green-dotted wall on which vines and ferns are washed in the fresh water fed by the lagoon sitting atop the volcano. Our time in Nicaragua had come to an end, and in an attempt to catch the 7:30 ferry we showed up to the port in decent time at about 7:15. However, after some confusion as to why the ticket office wasn’t open until 8, it became clear that we were at the wrong port and had to backtrack about 15 minutes. The race was on. It was us against the cattle and the pigs, the chickens and the dogs, the speed bumps and the beestings. We got to the town, turned down the first street and got to the bottom. Good

news: ferry is still here. Bad news: it’s way over there! Back up the bumpy street and down the next one. The few workers onboard were in the final stages of organizing their ropes and checking their knots but the rope barrier at the ramp was down so on we rode. It wasn’t smooth, but it worked. We squirmed into place scraping our mirrors against an immovable truck on one side, brushing our luggage against mopeds on the other side. Two of us had our bikes tied into place but Tym, inaccessible to the crew, was asked to sit on his bike for the duration of the

hour-long ride. We sputtered back to the mainland and upon disembarking we were soon on our way south once again, and in less than an hour we were crossing into Costa Rica. After a passport stamp, exit documents for the bikes, and a small exit tax we were cleared to leave Nicaragua and began the process of entering Costa Rica: a long maze of photocopies, offices, waiting rooms and line ups. Our efforts to reach Puntarenas were stymied by a long line of heavy traffic, and we weaved in and out of the lurching vehicles and relished the

rare and short-lived stretches of open road between log jams. The Costa Rican ranches seemed more prosperous than we had seen in Nicaragua - the buildings seemed less likely to fall over and the fences more likely to stay standing. Of course there were still a lot of poverty-stricken areas, where patched-together sheet metal wall encircled dark rooms as innocent children still laughed and played, living in the present, blissfully unaware of their difficult futures. As our first and only afternoon in Costa Rica came to a close we were treated to distant hills of green so pure and so

alive that even under the dying light, black clouds, and thick mist they held on to their colour and allure. The following morning we were on the road early, the hard rubber of our tires whirring down the pavement towards Panama, and our final border crossing north of the Darien Gap. The thick Costa Rican forest was interrupted occasionally by encounters with the sea, the heavy ocean air carrying smells of fish, seaweed and salt right off the water and into our helmets. We rode past short animated hills that were full of texture colour; CONTINUED ON PG.13 leafy greens

As I write this article I am sitting in a plane on my way to Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest. I always love this event, it’s a quiet departure from it’s big brother, Bike Week, and for us northerners is a nice last hurrah before we put our bikes away for the long winters that sometimes plague us here at home. The recent hurricane that swept up the Atlantic coast of the southern states left some uncertainty as to whether this event would still go on. Although it seems it’s a go, it will be interesting to see how the turn out is compared to other years. The weather in the south over the past week has got me thinking of a common question that I often get. “What about water?” Water is often a concern of riders, whether it be for our comfort navigating the roads, picking what we will pack for our trip or our worry of our electronics that are exposed to the elements. We typically try to avoid water, most of us anyway. When it comes to electronics and knowing if they are waterproof or water resistant, there is often a cloud of confusion that surrounds the subject. These two terms are often interchanged and used when describing the ability of a device to hold up against water however they are not interchangeable terms and understanding the difference will be very helpful. The main difference between waterproof and water resistant is this. Water resistant will refer to the items ability not to shrivel up and die at the mere thought of water coming in contact with it. Often splashes of water, higher moisture and even moderate direct contact will not destroy the component. It will not however withstand long exposure to, or being completely submerged in water. In most cases a product being water resistant will be just fine on the bike. Waterproof on the other hand will be much more reliable when it comes to water exposure. Water proof will refer to the devices ability to be completely submerged in water and operate for a certain period of time. This “waterproof” rating will typically carry some type of IPX rating with it. An IPX rating, meaning “Ingress Protection,” is provided by a third party that will test a particular devices ability to withstand water immersion for a predetermined amount of time. The higher the IP number the better it will be at resisting water. As an example

an item with an IPX6 rating will withstand a greater amount of water for a longer period of time compared to an item rated at IPX4. Personally I am one to argue that if your speakers on your bike are submerged you have bigger problems then your speaker not working! Although we may not set out to ride in the rain we will inevitably get caught in it at some point while riding. Even if the simple possibility of rain two days before the thought of a ride keeps you inside you may still need to wash the dust off that bike some day. These events will put your electronics in the line of fire when it comes to possible water damage. I believe that caution is the best way to prevent damage. Even if your electronics are “waterproof” it is not a bad idea to limit their use when being subjected to water. This of course is not possible with all electronics, it’s not like I can turn off my headlight or my gauges when the rain starts. When washing my bike, I will always try and avoid spraying water directly at areas that contain any electronics, my fairing especially. A light misting is fine but water should never be directed at gauges, radios, speakers etc. If it’s not painfully clear already high pressure should never ever be directed at any electrical connection of any kind as it will have the ability to by pass seals or other protection and short out connected circuits. With all of this said what is the best product to put on our bikes? I would start with looking at how a manufacture states their product can be used. If having a speaker or an amp that is truly waterproof is important to you, find out what the IPX rating is. If there is not one I would be cautious and at the very least treat it as water resistant. Secondly seek out manufactures that are producing application specific products. Products designed around use on a motorcycle will likely have environmental factors in mind. Lastly how will a manufacture stand behind their product should it become damaged from water. If they tell you that water damage is not covered on their waterproof electronics you may want to reconsider! As always we welcome your questions. Please submit questions to: readers@themotorcycletimes.ca Until next month, Ride Safe and have fun out there!

Roads of Beauty and Chaos building up towards sharp ridges and slipping into steep valleys which held pockets of wispy white clouds only visible early in the morning through the day’s first streaks of sun that cast wavering shadows on the road ahead. In contrast to the previous day, the distant hills struggled to hold on to their colour under darkening clouds and thickening sea air. Another blur of paperwork saw us out of Costa Rica and into Panama next to a mass of refugees stuck waiting at the border. Seeing their faces that held onto looks of boredom and helplessness put our border battles into perspective and all things considered it was a breeze. Upon entering Panama we were pleased that the rumours of the two-lane divided highway were true and our pace and morale were boosted as we approached the long awaited and much anticipated sail boat. Continuing to tempt fate against the capricious weather we wore only t-shirts, our jackets strapped on to the top of our luggage to hold down a growing number of loose items. We faced some light rain which stings against bare skin at 110 kph, but the drops never materialized into anything substantial. As luck would have it, Panamanian

infrastructure officials had decided to time the year’s major roadwork projects to coincide with the Alaskentina Adventure and our two-lanes quickly became one and we were directed back and forth between alternating sides of the highway, shared with the oncoming traffic. The minor irritation wasn’t cause for concern and we clipped along the Pan-American watching the varying views with absolute satisfaction. The Panamanian mountains run more or less East-West along the country, paralleling our travels. Near the Costa Rican border, the Cordillera de Talamaca range stands tall above the jungle. Void of any light, the spiny ridge lay dark against the bright overcast sky that held tightly on to the afternoon light. Loosely constituted clouds refused to leave the black slopes throughout the afternoon, but their light nature was easily pierced by the mighty rock summits. This wonderful distant view was at times enhanced by a bright green foreground in the form of pristine pastures dotted with hungry livestock. We met a curious character at one of our stops along the way. An American man, 58 years old, with a sleeveless

view of mountaineous Panama’s spine as browns penetrated the sea of green. As planned, we reached Panama City a couple of nights before the scheduled Stahlratte departure date: enough time for oil changes and other miscellaneous maintenance, laundry and errands. Considering the exploded engine in Puebla only a couple of weeks earlier, we were feeling good about having reached Panama City in time for our journey across the gap. By spreading the word about our trip and our cause, you can help us reach our goal of raising $22,000 for Free The Children’s Adopt-A-Village program. The organization works to break the cycle of poverty in developing countries and all money raised will be directed to the existing programs in Ecuador and Nicaragua. Your average motorcycle pilot probably wouldn’t think that riding around Toronto is much fun, never mind being a good destination for a motorcycle adventure. It’s difficult to get even half way through the gears, as you start and stop from light to light. There are however, lots of places to stop and things to check out. Parking a bike downtown is also a whole lot easier than parking your car. It’s also a whole lot cheaper. There’s always somewhere to squeeze two wheels into. Toronto is of course, a huge city made up of smaller towns and villages and districts hidden and gobbled up over the years by skyscappers of glass and cement, each having their own sights, sounds and smells. My partner and I sometimes make a goal of pointing the front wheel toward a part of TO that we may have never been, or only overheard in passing conversations. That was the case on a recent Sunday.

Waking up, we thought brunch somewhere new might be a good idea. It seemed like an especially brilliant idea, when we decided to get my other girl out of the garage, and to ride to wherever that “somewhere” might be. Dovercourt, a bit on the west side of downtown Toronto, definitely fit the bill as somewhere we hadn’t spent much time. You might think 10 am on a Sunday, traffic couldn’t be that bad – you’d be wrong. It seemed construction was occurring all over. We would try to scoot around one place by getting off the street under construction, only to run into a different mess. But at least we were working up an appetite. Dovercourt is not in the touristy part of TO. In fact, parts of it are said to contain some of the ugliest streets in Toronto. Large old factories and warehouses from the past are a pretty common sight. Railroad lines are also in abundance. Potholes and cracked pavement abound. All part of the adventure. We found a nice little place where the sign read,

“Mediterranean” and were able to park right by the patio. After finding a table on the outside, with umbrella coverage, we sat down and ordered a locally made brew. While sipping a Steamwhistle, we perused the menu. Not the sort of fare you might find at your local Denny’s. When we set out in the morning, shakshuka was not something I was thinking about for brunch. But that’s exactly what we ate. Lamb and beef, in a thick tomato sauce, with plenty of herbs and spinach, topped with a couple of fried eggs and accompanied with some warm pita bread. That’s a great brunch! Firing up the Guzzi, we only got a few blocks, when we spied a couple of bikes parked on the street in front of a garage. Performing a quick Uturn had us parked on the north side of DuPont, next to an older Harley with a sky high sissy bar straight out of the 60’s. It appeared we were in front of a small auto repair joint, but this was actually the home of Moto Revere. Owned and run by Andrea Lothrop and Peter Redford, Moto

Revere is a motorcycle do-it-yourself repair shop. It is based on members paying a monthly fee for the right to take their ride in for maintenance and repair whenever needed. After the Harley and its rider roared off, we sat down and had a coffee with Andrea, who explained how things worked. The shop is apparently geared toward helping new riders understand their machine a bit better; but is also a facility for the rider who lives in an apartment or townhouse and needs somewhere to work on their ride. Looking around, it is also apparent that other more serious motorcycle wrenches use the place as well. More than one older Honda CB, and an Italian Harley were in the process of being brought back to life. No full on restorations, but something you could ride with pride and not worry about getting a scratch. While I was there, member Chad Sutherland, was executing some respectable custom work on his 250 Honda. In addition to monthly members, the place also has “drop ins”; individuals who might

15 – The Motorcycle Times, November 2016

need a place to wrench on their motorcycle on a one time basis. Moto Revere opened in May of 2016 as a resource for the new rider, and even the older rider who just never had the opportunity to learn much about their machine and how to look after it. Andrea noted, that “not everyone in the city has a buddy with a garage full of tools.” To those who do, it may seem kind of humourous that someone wouldn’t know that you have to change the oil in a motorcycle, or where the battery is located, but it’s a fact that some new riders just don’t know. And she’s spot on when she states that, “it can’t be a bad thing to be able to effect a little curbside repair when things go badly”. The owners are both fairly new to riding but have a previous life in bicycle repair and running a co-operative. The building itself has a cool layout, a counter with bar stools and a coffee maker. Several large skylights allow in plenty of natural light – a good thing for the eyes of those of us with a few years of experience in the saddle. The shop provides basic tools and motorcycle lifts. There also a few fabrication machines such as grinders and a drill press. With others around working on their projects, it’s easy to get a pair of extra hands when needed. The same goes for advice. Professional advice is also available, and a certified mechanic is available, should you “get in too deep”. Moto Revere provides both on and offsite winter storage. So if you’re the kinda guy that winterizes his bike in November, but wants it accessible should a warm day surprise you – please note that I am that kinda guy - then the onsite storage might be something for you. Starting this fall they will be offering Lucas oil products for sale, but Andrea points out that “they are not looking to compete with the “normal” motorcycle shop”. Moto Revere presently, also orders other basic items like tires, and will call around to locate other parts on your behalf. Then have them delivered to the shop; awaiting you to come and practice “the art” of motorcycle maintenance. While sitting at the “bar” I pick up a flyer which advertises a swap meet, a Saturday mornings meetup and maintenance workshops. Andrea volunteers that they also hold the odd BBQ. Makes me wish that my local motorcycle dealer did some of these things. Makes it seem more like a community. Something that’s really lacking in some stores. Andrea went on to explain that Moto Revere is very “supportive of women rides, who make up a significant part of the membership.” She then went on and tried to explain to my partner how she should really get a motorcycle of her own. Before we left Andrea let me know that a few of them were riding down to Brooklyn, New York the coming weekend. I wished her good luck and a safe ride, and that all goes well. But even if it doesn’t, I know they will be able to effect any curbside repairs that might prove necessary.

Heading North to Battle Cancer So many aspects of motorcycling come down to luck, serendipity or happenstance. It’s then perhaps not entirely coincidental that I found myself talking with the founder of a proposed new biker event to raise funds to fight cancer on the same day I buried one of my aunts who passed away from the disease. In fact, even as I talked with a bartender after the funeral he, too, said he had a friend who had passed away from cancer. Everyone, it seems, has been touched by this illness. Bikers Battling Cancer was formed after the closure of a popular annual event in New Liskeard, Ontario, and is a federally incorporated non-profit charitable organization. The two are not directly related beyond their desire to fight cancer. BBC’s goal is to found a new 3-day motorcycle rally on the Canada Day long weekend, June 30-July 2, in 2017, but located in North Bay, which has the same feel as the New Liskeard event (which has ceased). BBC hopes to have live performers, live music, vendors, a possible ‘celebrity guest’ plus a showcase of local biker arts and entertainment including on-site camping. Don Smith, who is the director/chairman of Bikers Battling Cancer, says some misunderstandings arose in the biker community when an article was published without even talking to them, Smith says. “It kind of ruffled some feathers,” says Smith. “So I had to call and straighten it all out.” “In the beginning there was a misconstrue of words,” but Smith says it’s not an issue as far as he’s concerned any longer. The focus for the North Bay Bikers Rally 2017 is to raise funds for the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation cancer and the Wheels of Hope programs. They are looking at hosting the event at the North Bay Memorial Gardens and Thompson Park. The main ride will feature a stop at the North Bay Hospital. It’s billed as a familyfriendly event for solo riders, organizations and groups. A Personal Fight Smith, in his mid-50s, says he’s been riding since he was 22 - his first bike was a Yamaha RD350 - and he’s been riding off and on since then. Right now he rides a Honda 2001 custom 750 Spirit with a Harley-Davidson rear wheel and rear brakes, 883 carburetor, custom brake, bar, grips, paint scheme. It’s a bobber more or less and he has a lot of fun on it. He says it’s a one-of-a-kind. He’s not affiliated with any clubs or groups but goes by the nickname ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and hangs out with a loose collection of bikers in the Ottawa area. Smith drives a tractor-trailer for a living by day mostly in the Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton area. “Fishing, cottage life, sittin’ by the wa-

ter - all the good stuff,” Smith says, are his hobbies outside of motorcycling. “The outdoors, cool cars, real nice Peterbilts.” “There’s a bit of a personal side to it. Bikers Battling Cancer was basically born out of the closure of the event in New Liskeard - I liked what they were doing down there,” he says. “And then when I heard that it closed, we got to talking and Bikers Battling Cancer was birthed. I picked North Bay as the spot, it’s just a perfect spot.” His grandfather died of cancer and his older brother died of diabetes. His mother had cervical cancer and beat it - she is still with us. “We’re all getting older, right,” he says, “So you start thinking about things that are more important. I basically wanted to do something to help out.” So Smith founded Bikers Battling Cancer but says that it’s a new organization so they are still putting together the team. “I want to put a team together, an organizational team together, that’s qualified. I just don’t want somebody saying ‘I want to help’ and put them in charge of something that they have no experience in,” he says. “You have to think about logistics and the closure of New Liskeard,” Smith says. “So when you look at what’s going on around other places in Ontario - on the Canada Day long weekend, and you look at where North Bay is situated, the population - the biker community and it’s only three hours from Toronto - It’s just perfect. It’s the ideal location,” Smith says. Every bike event is dependent on the weather - which doesn’t trouble Smith. “That’s the beautiful thing about this,” Smith says. He says Memorial Gardens can hold about 5,500 people. Events can be held inside and out. “So if it rains we still have the indoor facilities, if it’s really, really hot we have air conditioned facilities.” From an event perspective he considers it perfect. The Proposal “I’ve already gone in front of city council in North Bay with our proposal and we’re still working on that,” he says. “And yes, I will be asking the city for an ‘in kind’ contribution. You can’t do any of these types of big events without the city on board - the funding just isn’t there.” As for the reaction - Smith says he was very encouraged with a few councillors thinking it was a fantastic idea. He didn’t think there were any large sticking points but council and staff just want to take a closer look in general. He thinks the questions and concerns are normal. They have a few sponsors already: the ROC-HD out of Sudbury, Carlson Sports and North Bay Cycle & Sports. His dream event would be full capacity for the venue and camping, raising of funds for fighting cancer, and about 25,000 participants in three days. You can get the most up-to-date information at www.bikersbattlingcancer.ca or you can also find them on Facebook.

Sepang 2015 - Marquez crashes out of the lead!

Marquez: “I’m curious about the track surface” All new asphalt at Sepang to greet the 2016 MotoGP World Champ

Reigning Mopar CSBK Champion Jordan Szoke, left, was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in Toronto, presented by Fiat Chrysler Canada/Mopar’s Jim Kiritsis, right. [Photo: Colin Fraser]

Szoke inducted into Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame Jordan Szoke was inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame at their 22nd Gala Induction Ceremony at the Glenn Gould Studio Theatre at the CBC Building in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Saturday evening, October 22. Born in Bradford, ON., and recently moved to Lynden, ON., Szoke has won the Canadian National Pro Superbike crown a record 11 times, as well as further success in numerous pavement support categories and off-road activities. Reigning Mopar CSBK Champion Szoke, riding for Express Lane/BMW Motorrad Canada aboard a S100RR, has also managed three perfect seasons on the National tour, unbeaten in 2010 with Honda and 2015 and 2016 for BMW. The 37-year-old won his rst career Superbike Feature National at Race City in Calgary, Albert in 1998, taking the title for Kawasaki at the end of the same season. Since then, Szoke has built a record total of National Superbike events, with a running total of 59 successes, including 14 consecutive wins heading into the 2017 season. Szoke went on to ride for Honda Canada several times, satellite teams in the USA for Ducati, Suzuki and Harley-Davidson,

Suzuki Canada, a long and successful stint with Kawasaki, and the current Szoke-BMW era on the Canadian tour. Szoke was presented to the Hall of Fame Gala audience by Fiat Chrysler/ Mopar Executive Jim Kiritsis, one of the key supporters for Szoke’s Waznie Racing squad. “When you start racing, you think about the next race, maybe the next win, the next Championship, the next season,” explained Szoke from handsome CBC stage. “Then you get to a certain point, and you consider what you have achieved, how far you have come – and it makes you feel old!” “I think that most people know that with motorcycle racing, the wear and tear is a major issue with your career’s span, with the amount of time you can compete at a top level having so much to do with injuries, recovery, and all those factors. “I am very fortunate, that things have gone very well for me over all the years at all the tracks in all the series,” smiled Szoke. “I might limp a little when I get up in the morning, but by the afternoon everything is working ne! I want to race as long as I can be competitive at a high level, at least for a few more years.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was off the leash for the rst time in Australia – and the newly-crowned World Champion sadly took a slide through the gravel and suffered his rst DNF of the year. With the title already wrapped up and no injuries, however, Marquez is ready for the next challenge after taking the positives. After a pitstop in Indonesia for a promotional event, the new World Champion is now ready for Sepang: a track that proved a turning point in 2015. This year, the track has been fully resurfaced for better drainage and grip, and some kerbs and cambers have changed. With the work having been carried out after the pre-season test at the venue, the race weekend will prove a clean slate for everyone – and Marquez is curious to see how the changes have affected the modern classic of a venue.

Marc Marquez: “In Australia we tried to do a great race, but although we ultimately weren’t successful, we always look at the positives. In this case, I once again learned something and I’ll be more careful in similar situations in the future. When you feel good and are really enjoying the riding, the extra condence you feel isn’t easy to control, but we’ll try. Now we are in Sepang, a track where we always test in February and therefore we know very well. Anyway, when we came here for the winter test, we were still struggling to nd our direction with bike set-up. Moreover, soon after that test, they completely resurfaced the track. Therefore, we must wait and see how we will be able to manage this weekend. I’m very curious about the track, to see how much smoother the surface is now and how much faster it will allow us to lap.”

Rossi: “Malaysia is very physically demanding”

9-time World Champion looking ahead to the challenge of Sepang

Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) comes into the Malaysian GP from a stunning ride from fteenth on the grid in Australia to get onto the podium – moving clear of teammate Jorge Lorenzo in the ght for P2 in the title after Lorenzo had a tough race. Sepang International Circuit is now a different kind of challenge, with

incredibly high track and ambient temperatures – pushing man and machine to the limit. The ‘Doctor’ is the most successful rider at the track with six premier class wins – the last of which coming in 2010. 2016 sees Rossi aiming squarely at another podium result. Valentino Rossi: “Sepang is one of my favourite tracks. I like it a lot, but it‘s also one of the most difcult races of the season due to the weather. It is always very hot and you must always be very careful with what you eat and drink. The weekend in Malaysia is very physically demanding, but I‘m in good shape. The weekend on Phillip Island was very complicated but in the end we did a good race and I‘m happy for that. I hope that in Malaysia we can be able to work well again from the rst practice. I would like to make it a good race and get on the podium another time.”

Sepang: pushing the limits of man and machine A new track surface and a new World Champion – but the same spectacular venue

Sepang International Circuit is a worldleading facility. With the main grandstand sandwiched between the main and back straights, fans are bombarded with the sound of MotoGP™ from two sides as the riders hit some spectacular speeds. A little south of capital metropolis Kuala Lumpur, Sepang’s 5.5km of freshly surfaced asphalt tests everything a bike has to offer, with the highest ambient temperatures of the season pushing riders to their physical limits. Used in pre-season as a test venue, the track is the ultimate combination of long straights and varying corners, and in 2016 the grid return to a new track surface – as well as some modications. Run offs have been adjusted to provide a better compromise for racing on two wheels and four, kerbs replaced – and the asphalt changed. With Malaysian rain often seeing the skies open quickly at Sepang, the new track surface is designed to give better grip in the wet, as well as redirecting streams of water off the racing line. The camber of some corners has therefore changed, too – the key one being Turn 15, which is now adverse camber and has different ways to attack it whilst setting the same laptime. Last year’s winner in Malaysia will sadly not be lining up to try and do it again, injured and replaced by Hiroshi Aoyama. Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) broke his collarbone in a crash on Friday in Motegi, and is sitting out the Malaysian GP as he recovers. Having completely dominated the race in 2015, Pedrosa’s performance will be a tough act to follow – as will the entire race weekend. Pivotal, exciting and controversial, Sepang 2015 changed the headlines again in a season of incredible motorcycle racing. As the title ght hit boiling point between Movistar Yamaha teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, Sepang saw a turning point that changed the colour of the season nale. This year, the landscape is very different as the paddock heads to the Malaysian GP – but memories are often not short.

It all started with a mysterious desire to ride. Not even sure what sparked it. All I knew was that I wanted something mean, that looked classic - olde school if you will and handled well. Armed with a lack; of knowledge, confidence and money, I set out to find my perfect ride, isn’t that how we all start out. The endless array of choices was overwhelming. Throwing my leg over countless motorcycles, thinking, day dreaming and comparing, but still not quite ready to make a commitment. This was around the time I ran into an old buddy that rides. We started talking bikes, but slowly the conversation turned to mopeds. I’d never seriously thought about mopeds before, but I was intrigued. My biggest worry with a bike was not knowing how to fix it, that and the lack of green backs for what I thought would be there perfect ride for me. My friend suggested a moped as a sort of mechanic’s crash course. If you can make a moped run, you can make a bike run, he joked. It didn’t sound completely ridiculous, so I decided to go for it. Finding a beauty on Kijiji was pretty quick and by the end of the week I was in my garage with the moped dismembered on the floor. Panic struck, I slowly got the it cleaned and tuned until it was running just right. And added a few mods of my own. I got a plate, insurance and even a sticker, and at each step ran into people who were both surprised and curious about someone wanting to ride a moped. People wanted to know, Why ride a moped? And, I didn’t really have an answer. I had to do all the normal paper work as for any other vehicle in Canada, even had to get my motorcycle license, so it wasn’t because it was easier. But somehow the novelty was appealing enough for me, plus now I felt like a competent mechanic. So with all that work behind me, now the only thing left was for me to take it for a spin. It was late evening in the early days of summer, traffic in my neighbourhood was slow and most people were in their backyards. I pulled the moped out of the garage, propped it on the stand and kicked the pedal once and it started right up. Right

away, I heard and smelled the howling of my two stroke. I started doing laps around my neighbourhood, manically laughing like a psycho. It worked! It worked, and even at such low speeds, the rush of being on two wheels was impossible to ignore, just as impossible as the laughter that kept spewing out my mouth. I must have sounded insane. It was time to take it back to the garage, I decided that the next day I would take it on a longer trip. Early the next day, I had a coffee and headed straight to the garage. There she was perched up all pretty like, the smell of gas and oil filled my nostrils, I was excited. First things first I said, check for any over night leaks, tire pressure, gas, etc, then filled a backpack up with some emergency tools (just incase), and grabbed my helmet. It started without a problem and soon I was slowly leaving my neighbourhood in search of a country road. I felt like I was a roaring banshee, but probably looked more like a moth struggling against the wind. Either way, it was pure joy. Normally a trip like this would take an hour or so with a car, but at 30klm/hr, I fully expected it to take me most of the day. Quickly I noticed how slow I was travelling, cars passed me without the slightest effort, and the only things I passed were parked. But I didn’t mind the slow pace, I was heading out to find the perfect country road and was enjoying every minute of it. Fields of grass, wheat and corn waved me welcome as they swayed in the breeze. The sleepy country neighbourhoods were woken up by my thundering exhaust, booming down the road. Even if I didn’t look fast, I could at least sound it. Riding along side the creek, glowing gold from the sun, the twisties flowed easy as they followed the waters edge. This was that feeling I always heard riders talk about, the feeling of freedom. Like wings grew from my back, suddenly the possibility to go anywhere, anytime, was real, regardless of how slow I got there. After all, it’s about the ride, not so much the destination, right!. Looping around the country side I headed back to the city, stopped off at my place first for a couple of quick touch ups, checked the gas again and was off. My plan was to take the city back roads, avoid streets that were busy and full of traffic,

30%K

All it took was 50cc

and eventually make my way to the far end of town where I would meet up with a friend to show it off my new ride. Driving on city roads was completely different. I was intimidated by the speeds of passing vehicles, but stuck to what I knew: guard your space, be considerate of others and always look around...always look around. A few people tried to squeeze me out of lanes, some didn’t even see me when they were changing lanes, and others were just plane horrible and tried to tailgate. Eventually a line up of cars started to grow behind me as no one could find an opening to pass, they eventually found a way around me. But it wasn’t all bad, people walking by loved it. I tried to focus on the road, but couldn’t help nodding at the people giving me thumbs up and eagerly pointing at my ride. It felt nice to know there are others that appreciated this simplicity of my ride. Everything was going great. I had gotten deep into the city without a single problem, and was getting more comfortable on the road. Thinking to myself, this thing was invincible. It was well after lunch when I got to my friends house, we chatted for a bit, showed off my moped, then I decided to hit the road again. This time I wanted to drive along the river and take the long way home. I hadn’t gone but a couple of blocks, when I started to hear something scratching, scraping. Looking down, I couldn’t see any problems, so I stopped to have a better look. The chain was starting to ride the guard, but I nudged it back into place and continued to ride. The noise came back after another block or two and before I knew it, the chain slipped off and mangled the guard. My new paint job was wrecked, the chain had left grind marks along the rear axle as well. This was a serious bummer. I checked my tool bag and realized that I only had one wrench and would need two to take the wheel off and fix this mess. There I was on the side of the road, trying to get my moped running again. I tried with what I had to coax the chain back on, and it worked, for about a minute. The rear axle was loose now and it gave the chain plenty of room to slip off whenever it felt like it. Who could I call, I didn’t know anybody with a truck or even a hatchback, and there was no way I was abandoning the

moped. So down the road we went, even slower then before, pushing my beloved ride. We were both a mess, so I stopped at a pizza place to grab some napkins and clean up a little. It’s now almost 3pm and I knew it would take me until dark to get home, so we continued onward. For fun I tried to hitchhike, but all I got were honks. A few people on the street asked me about the moped and gave me compliments, but still no ride. I took short cuts and side streets and started to discover a part of the city I had never known. I drive through this place so often that all the cracks in between were invisible. In a strange way, walking my moped through town made me see the city in a whole new light, like I was walking through it for the first time. There were neighbourhoods I’d never noticed, parks I didn’t know about, and ghostly abandoned lots that everyone seemed to have forgotten. If I didn’t get a chance to explore this part of my city on my moped, I at least got to do it with my moped, and somehow that’s the part of riding this thing that stuck with me. Going fast is fun and exciting, but going slow gave me this whole new view of my city. I had spent most of my life here and I thought I knew it like the back of my hand, but couldn’t believe how little I recognized when I was forced to walk through it. When I was back on main roads, lots of people saw the back of my hand and thumb as I tried a last ditch attempt to get picked up and salvage a few hours from my day. But really, part of me didn’t care. The breakdown, the walk, smelling like two stroke oil and gasoline, it was all part of the fun. A trip that turned into a kind of adventure through a city I thought I already knew. Eventually I did get picked up by a truck, that was only 10 minutes away from the house. Either way, I was pumped and thankful that they picked me up. We hauled my moped into the bed and I sat back there with her as the truck drove us home. It felt nice to be riding in the back with the open air, I started to think about that question people kept asking me, why a moped? Somehow I felt like me being hauled home in the back of a truck was a good enough answer, like anything could happen and everything is possible on this thing, my moped.
