Introducing The Helmet Brake Light Why has no one thought of this before? HIGH-LEVEL brake lights are common on cars because they can be seen not just from the car behind but from the one behind that, too. Meanwhile motorcycle tail lights remain stubbornly below wind-screen level, only visible to the driver immediately behind, when it’s us that can least afford to be in a pile-up. So why has it taken this long for someone to think of putting one on the rider’s helmet? ‘Brake Free’ is a new wireless LED light that mounts on the back of exisiting helmets and uses sensors to detect every time you slow down as a result of engine braking, gear changes or applying the brakes. The Florida-based company behind the idea, called BrakeFree Technologies, is crowdfunding for investment and taking pre-orders.
Harley-Davidson unveils 2017 Street Rod Quote of the Month ‘In politics stupidity is not a handicap, but in riding it’s usually a death sentence.’
The 2017 Harley-Davidson Street Rod is the newest edition to the Street model family. Outfitted in Harley-Davidson Dark Custom styling, the Street Rod features a High Output Revolution X 750 engine, which produces 18 percent more horsepower and 8 percent more torque than the standard engine. “The Street Rod will put the thrill in any
urban commute,” said Mathew Weber, Harley-Davidson chief engineer for the Street Rod. “We’ve paired the potent new High Output Revolution X 750 engine with a revised chassis and up-rated suspension components to make the Street Rod quick, light-handling and easy to ride.” “We made this new bike look tough and aggressive,” said Harley-Davidson’s lead
designer Chetan Shedjale. “This aligns with the environment our riders will experience this motorcycle in. The inverted, black-anodized forks and triple clamps along with a new speed screen combine to add visual mass to the Street Rod front end. Finally, a supercharger-inspired air intake and the deeper growl of the exhaust note draw attention to the High Output Revolution X engine.” As stated, the High Output Revolution X 750 engine produces 18 percent more horsepower and 8 percent more torque than the standard Revolution X 750 engine (U.S. and Canada markets only). The new single overhead-cam V-Twin engine features a larger air box, a new dual-throat throttle body, revised four-valve cylinder heads and high-lift camshafts, and a higher-volume muffler. The compression ratio is bumped from 11.0:1 to 12.0:1, and the engine redline is increased from 8,000 to 9,000 rpm. “We’ve improved air flow and then tuned this new engine to maximize midrange torque,” said Weber. “It really delivers a punch between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm, power you can always feel and use in realworld riding situations. Liquid cooling helps maintain that performance and rider comfort in stop-and-go urban traffic.” The new Street Rod chassis is engineered to match the performance of the High Output Revolution X engine. The front end features rigid 43mm inverted forks gripped by a lightweight aluminum triple clamp. Fork rake angle is tightened from 32 to 27 degrees to quicken the steering. Coil-over rear shock absorbers have an external reservoir to increase fluid capacity and improve control. The shocks increase the rear suspension travel by 31
percent, to 4.6 inches. A new swing arm is slightly longer to accommodate the taller ride height, and has new performanceinspired styling. Lean angle is increased from 28.5 degrees left and right to 37.3 degrees right and 40.2 degrees left. The Street Rod rolls on light-weight, 17-inch front and rear Split 7 Spoke Black Cast Wheels and new Michelin Scorcher 21 radial tires. Dual 300mm-diameter front disc brakes deliver confident stopping power. AntiLock Braking (ABS) and the Harley-Davidson Smart Security System are factory-
installed options for the Street Rod. “The Street Rod is the most nimble motorcycle in the current Harley-Davidson line-up,” said Weber. “Tires, wheels, suspension and frame geometry are engineered to work together and deliver handling that’s light and precise at all speeds.” A new seat shape is designed to fit the rider’s contour, and seat height is raised by 3.7 inches, to 29.4 inches, to enhance the rider’s view forward over traffic. A flat, drag-style handlebar puts the rider in a fist-forward posture on the bike. The
Street Rod also features new forged foot controls and aluminum foot pegs that are positioned for a comfortable seating position that also makes it easy for riders to get feet down to the ground at stops. Street Rod styling highlights include a new color-matched speed screen, a short aggressive street fighter-inspired tail, and all-new LED tail lamp and turn signals with a Street Rod signature look. The Street Rod will be offered in three color options: Vivid Black, Charcoal Denim, and Olive Gold.

Live to Ride I don’t know about you but I have been watching the weather channel like a drug addict on heroin who cant seem to ever get that satisfying fix, I just cant seem to get enough. I have even begun to consider the Weather Networks weekend meteorologist Chris St.Clair a friend and I have never met the fellow. He always seems to be in a good mood, with a trace of hope in his voice as he delivers the upcoming long range forecast and that helps get me through the week without choking someone. I listen carefully to the daily forecasts and the three day outlook. I am mesmerized to see the changes to the jet stream and everyday I see it track further and further north, where it should be. Finally allowing the warm air trapped just south of Virginia make its way to the shores of Lake Ontario and northward to parts of the province that have had to deal with way too much cold and snow. Unfortunately, for the past month, here in the Golden Horseshoe, Mother Nature has been up to her tricks by teasing us with a day here and there of double digit temperatures, only to drop the following day to near sub-zero conditions. Sometimes, late at night, when its really quiet, I swear I can hear just the faintest sound of laughter off in the distance just before I drift off to sleep. I know the warm weather is coming, it always
does, but this year for some reason, it just seems to be taking longer than it should. And what’s worse is that every day that we have had double digit temps, I inevitably will get a text message from my riding buddy asking me if I want to go for a putt. I have been forced to decline due to either work commitments or household projects. This past winter my wife and I have taken on two renovation projects which have both taken much too long. With my ride still in it’s cozy winter spot I still have a list of to do’s to get my bike ready and finding the time to spend with my two wheel sweetheart has been a challenge. One reason I’m looking forward to this season is I am hoping to finally begin to check off some things on my bucket list. For a long time I have wanted to do a long riding trip. I have contemplated riding to the Keys or perhaps the Maritimes and ride the Cabot Trail. I have experienced both on 4 wheels, but never on two wheels. Last summer I had the opportunity to chat with two fellows while stopped at a local coffee shop which is a common occurrence we have all experienced as riders. But this conversation was different, these guys had plans for a once in a lifetime experience and they were going to fulfill that plan. Riding all-terrain motorcycles, like those you see on the Dakar rally, the plan was to take
about six months to ride with another friend from Alaska south to Argentina. We (the Motorcycle Times) have been fortunate to have had the privilege of printing their journals and experiences as they did travelled south. Personally for me, I was inspired, I made a promise to myself to finally take the time to do at least one of my bucket list trips, and this summer I hope I will be able to check one more off my list. I will keep you posted. Last but not least, April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Just my opinion, but there is too much technology built into cars today, and all it’s doing is making more people lazy inattentive drivers. Drivers are relying on the technology to pay attention for them. There is this great invention, its been around since the beginning of time, it’s called your ‘NECK’ . It has this great ability to allow your eyes to see over 180º and if you move the body a little you can even see further than that. Technology has been moving faster than society knows how to deal with it. It reminds me of the Disney movie ‘WALL-E where everyone is so distracted by technology that they have all become lazy, unaware and unsociable slobs - don’t get all bent out of shape regarding my choice of a word, you know it’s accurate. So keep your head on a swivel. Stay safe this season, distracted drivers are everywhere.

Limited Edition Canada’s Oldest Harley Dealer Celebrates a Century Motorcycles gone in 10 minutes Two American icons partnered to create a new limited-edition V-Twin motorcycle — and it sold out in mere minutes. On Monday, orders started being taken for the 2017 Jack Daniel’s Limited Edition Indian Chieftain, which has a starting price of $35,000. US On Thursday, Indian Motorcycles reported it received pre-order deposits for all 100 units that will be produced within just 10 minutes. Last year, 150 units were spoken for in just eight hours. In 2016, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Jack Daniel’s, 150 Limited Edition Indian Chieftain Vintage and Indian Springfield motorcycles sold quickly, according to the company. The first of the 2016 bikes that was built, unit No. 001, was auctioned for $150,000. The auction proceeds went to Operation Ride Home. As they did last year, the two companies worked with Klock Werks Kustom Cycles in designing the limited-edition Chieftain. Unique features include a 19inch, 10-spoke contrast-cut front wheel and open fender, a white and black crystal paint job with Jack Daniel’s-inspired accents, and a pure silver horn cover badge from Montana Silversmiths. In addition to a custom embossed tank console with the bike’s build number, a leather tank pouch, and billet driver and passenger floorboards will have Jack Daniel’s design elements including the company’s “Bottles and Throttles Don’t Mix” mantra and “Old No. 7.” The engine will have unique cam, primary, and air intake covers, and the bike with be outfitted with a 200-watt audio system including a premium saddlebag audio setup. Other rider amenities include a power windshield and a 7-inch Ride Command infotainment screen. Each Jack Daniel’s Limited Edition Indian Chieftain will come with a commemorative American flag handmade from Jack Daniel’s barrel wood and a wooden plaque with the owner’s name, motorcycle number (No. 001-No. 100), and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). The Chieftain model ordinarily starts at $24,000, so the $11,00 premium isn’t that great a reach — particularly since many riders option up their rides to personalize them.
KTM 1290 Super Duke GT Recall
KTM 1290 Super Duke GT owners should expect a recall notification in the coming weeks, as the Austrian brand has determined that there is an issue with the sport-tourer’s fuel hose. The recall affects both 2016 and 2017 models, and centers around the possibility that the installed fuel hose may develop small holes or cracks, which could lead to fuel leaking from the fuel hose. As such, it needs to be replaced by a certified KTM dealer.
Beginning as a small bicycle shop in 1912, Trev Deeley Motorcycles in Vancouver now boasts a 45,000-square-foot. The influence of Vancouver’s Deeley family on what we’ve driven over the past century started in a small store, called Fred Deeley – The Cycle Man, at 1075 Granville Street in the heart of the city’s main retail district. Fred Deeley had been selling bicycles in his native Birmingham, England, since 1902. He emigrated to Vancouver in 1912 and went into business two years later; soon, Deeley was augmenting his bicycle sales by importing BSA motorcycles from Birmingham. In 1917, Deeley became a distributor for a little-known motorcycle company from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, founded in 1903 by William S. Harley and brothers William, Arthur and Walter Davidson. Deeley became Canada’s first Harley-Davidson dealer. Over the next century, the small Vancouver shop grew into an iconic business, establishing a legacy of motorizing a nation as the Canadian distributor for HarleyDavidson motorcycles. The dealership also oversaw the sale of 40,000 Austin vehicles across Canada from the 1930s through to the 1960s, along with numerous other brands of imported cars and motorcycles. With his growing success, the astute businessman expanded the motorcycle business into a separate venture in 1925 with his son, Fred Deeley Jr., taking over motorcycle operations. By 1929, the bicycle and motorcycle shops were located along West Broadway and things was booming. In 1935, Trev Deeley joined his father’s motorcycle business as an apprentice mechanic, setting the stage for an unparalleled career as flat track racer and HarleyDavidson sponsored competitor, racing on the international circuit. The businesses would weather difficult times during the Depression and throughout the war years. Returning war veterans brought with them the love of HarleyDavidson motorcycles and, in many cases, brought home the motorcycles themselves. They began to customize their machines into “choppers,” and Deeley’s parts and service business took off. Trev Deeley argued so strongly that the sale and service of motorcycles should be run as a separate business, he threatened to quit. His father eventually acquiesced, and Trev Deeley Motorcycles opened its iconic location at 606 East Broadway in 1950. Being close with a dollar, Fred Deeley figured out how to change the massive red-lettered “Fred Deeley” neon sign at the business by only replacing the “F” and the
“D” to read “Trev Deeley Motorcycles.” Trev was the first in Canada to understand the impact lightweight and sturdy Japanese motorcycles would have in the marketplace, and he became the Canadian distributor for Honda in 1957; he subsequently took on distribution of Yamaha motorcycles. Both companies eventually took back distribution in Canada. In 1973, Fred Deeley Imports Ltd. was awarded the exclusive rights to distribute Harley-Davidson motorcycles and accessories in Canada, which the company retained until 2015. Trev Deeley Motorcycles general manager Darwin Osarchuk removed the red neon sign and quietly began the restoration of each letter; it is now displayed in the company’s 45,000-square-foot showroom as part of the 100-year anniversary celebrations. The building at 1875 Boundary Road includes the Deeley Motorcycle Museum, featuring approximately 250 rare machines dating back over a century, collected by Trev Deeley. Among them is his favourite: a 1936 Harley-Davidson knucklehead that epitomized modernization, with an overhead valve engine, art deco graphics and available pastel colours. “Trev was a very astute businessman who was okay with someone making a mistake as long as it didn’t happen twice,” says Osarchuk who rose from delivery truck driver in 1987 to general manager four years later. When the Harley-Davidson research and development team embarked upon its top-secret Nova project in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s as an answer to the high tech motorcycles imported by competitors, Trev Deeley was asked to fly to Milwaukee to review the revolutionary product. The Nova was powered by a liquid cooled V4 engine that could produce a bone chilling 145 horsepower in a product that was more boxy looking than traditional Harleys. The Nova project was shelved but the new Evolution engine was introduced mid-year in 1984 . “That engine began a new era and revitalized Harley-Davidson. It restored faith in the brand for existing customers and brought in new customers,” he says. One of five Nova prototypes in existence is displayed in the Deeley Motorcycle Museum. Trev Deeley passed away in April 2002 at the age of 82, but the business continues on, operated by long-time partners Don James, who started at Deeley’s in 1967, and Malcolm Hunter, who has been with the company since 1976.

Yamaha Three Cylinder Motorcycle Recall Multiple three-cylinder motorcycle models from Yamaha are about to be recalled for a safety issue. The recall concerns the lower handlebar, which may have been improperly painted, and as a result the stud bolt threads may not have had enough thread-locking agent applied. This means that if the handlebar is struck hard enough, the paint on the handlebar holder might be damaged, which in-turn could cause there to be enough of a clearance difference on the stud bolt to allow it to loosen itself from engine vibration. Since this could cause the handlebar to come loose (or off) while riding, it poses a safety hazard to the rider, and Yamaha intends to recall the affected models, which includes the 2015-2017 Yamaha FJ-09, 2014-2017 Yamaha FZ09, and 2016-2017 Yamaha XSR900. The remedy for affected machines is to install a new handlebar lower. So keep an eye out for the notice in the next few weeks.
Polaris paid $132M in recall related warranty costs in 2016
Polaris Industries, Inc. reportedly paid $132 million in recall-related warranty costs in 2016, which it disclosed in its annual report for shareholders. In addition to the amount paid, the company has also increased its warranty reserves by another $194 million in 2016, according to an article in the Star Tribune. "Analysts said they expect Polaris to give investors updated warranty cost estimates for 2017 when the company reports first-quarter earnings results," the article said. Polaris' Q1 call will take place at 9 a.m. CST on Tuesday, April 25.

Zero Motorcycles Inc. has issued a recall on certain 2017 S, DS and FXS motorcycles. In the affected models, the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) may have the wrong vehicle model information, possibly causing the ABS to function improperly. If the ABS does not function properly in a braking event, there is an increased risk of a crash or injury. This recall affects approximately 61 units. Zero will notify owners and dealers will reconfigure the HCU, or replace it as needed, free of charge. The recall began on March 20, 2017. Owners may contact Zero customer service at 1/888-841-8085. Turning to face the simmering officer. “There is no excuse sir, no reason worth it.” My shame genuine and blatant the cop cooled down but he still handed me a huge ticket and 6 month suspension with mandatory classroom time. My selfish and dangerous choice was appropriately rewarded. Here’s some advice. When your on reserve and stop to fill up, remember to turn the petcock back to main or you may run out of fuel with a full tank at a most inopportune moment. I am shocked and dismayed every single excursion made onto our roads. Seriously, how is it possible that so many of us are abhorrent freaks so full of anger and selfishness. You would think after 26 years as a professional driver I would have become jaded long ago but the opposite is true. A guesstimate works out to just shy of 3 million miles in heavy trucks and it has taught me something. There are a lot of dangerously indignant drivers who seem to have no regard for the law, which by the way only works if we uphold its values. Believing the law is right and living within it even when unsupervised is the only way our system will work because without rule of law mayhem and anarchy take over. My opening memory serves a purpose to all this. As I raced through the empty streets that morning grievously breaking the law, my mind screamed to slow down and my conscience adamant that something horrible would happen. Police, accident, or simply knowing that through my actions I was painting every motorcyclist with a black a-hole brush. I think this is the disconnect in so many people. They simply don’t feel like they are doing anything wrong or live in a delusion where their self importance superseeds everyone else’s. All of them wound tight in a ‘ME’ first mentality that in their off side mind, places them outside the law. Do these seemingly insane drivers go home and treat their loved ones with the same disregard?, I find that hard to believe. Here’s what I think but before that I need to paint myself in for you. If you are following my words here in TMT and I do hope to gather a following,
then you are understanding my affliction for sport bikes and control. How I crave this craft that we call motorcycling. This space is named very aptly, for I Am An Addict. I’ve did some seriously stupid things on bikes, dumbassery at its finest and shame ridden actions no one will ever know of at its worst. From a youth filled with two stroke haze trailing behind what must have looked like a crazed maniac on a death run to precise and methodical speed always aware of the proper place and time. All of it such a risk and I always knew it was wrong, always knew at any second I could pay for my choices. I should add that eventually I turned to the race track and since my street riding has slowed tremendously. If your like me, please take your addiction to a closed course. You will realize the freedom and speed, the lean angles and aggression are unattainable on the street and you’ll stop trying. Sorry, off on a bit of a tangent there. I think all this craziness we see on the roads, the anger and self righteousness are a product of today’s society. To quote David Bowie we are all “Under Pressure” and some of us are able to keep it in check and some well, some let go and act insane. My grandfather told me once “If you don’t know about it, you wont miss it.” Born into a simpler time of home made crystal radios and ice deliveries he was right but today his words seem an impossibility. Within seconds we can access the world from the palm of our hands, a million streams instantly pushed at us. We get angry when the internet takes two seconds too long and blame Google if its magic voice fails to tell us traffic is slow ahead. A woman crippled from age tries her best in the crosswalk. She innocently helped build this new age we live in and yet someone blares a car horn and slings profanity at her like mud. For so many of us life is this loud and frightening race. A race to get somewhere, to get ahead and in our way is everyone else, desperate to get there before we do. And where is there exactly. To work? Home? Maybe to pick the kids up? How about the real end, dirt. Let this modern supercharged race of life grab you and the finish line gets moved closer. Stress related heart attack or stupid rage on the roads, this never before seen orgy of selfish anger and entitlement is blind to your plight. Its you who can see the calm water and hear the tree frogs sing to the summer evening. Or with no regard for law or life, floor it on up to a buck seventy and curse all those in your precious way until that swelling vessel bursts. At least I’ll be on guard and watch in horror and sadness as you careen off the 401 already dead from an aneurysm.

Our highways are not the place to test the limits of your skills, if you really want to test them - the track is the place. You have a surface that is constructed, maintained, groomed and monitored for safety. You have proper attire and protection, medical personnel and equipment available. Your performance is observed and you get feedback. If you’re logging enough time at the track to consider buying a dedicated bike, the philosophy among experienced road racers is that you’ll go faster on an old bike than on a new one, because you’ll push yourself harder on something you’re not worried about breaking. You’re going to want to buy a used bike for your first track racer, because accidents are going to happen and swag counts for nothing when it’s busted into pieces. When buying used, you have two options - converting a street legal bike to a tracker, or buying an already converted bike. While a converted bike will already be prepped to track standards, the downside is that it may have already been thrashed, bashed and crashed by another amateur. Likewise, many amateur track bikes begin their lives when their street worthiness ends - either due to insurance write-off, auction or high-mileage – so there’s a good chance it was a lemon to begin with. Converting a street bike costs more initially, but you’ll be investing in the set-up you want, with a bike whose providence isn’t a blinking question mark. Also, resist the temptation to fulfill your Moto GP daydreams and stay away from esoteric European brands. Though sexy, these bikes have
reputations for quirky design features, high maintenance engines and parts that can be expensive or hard to find. The Top 5 recommended bikes that make perfect choices for a track racer:
Yamaha R6
Have you heard the term “horses for courses?” This is the horse for any course. If you know anything at all about road racing, you know that the R6 is legend and the rationale for buying one speaks for itself. The R6 is the training bike of choice for track schools everywhere because it offers a friendly, snappy powerband and lightweight flickability that is fun and confidence inspiring. In addition to their smooth powerbands and sharp handling chassis’, R6’s are renowned for their reliability, comfort and bulletproof engines. I’ve personally owned one and loved it more than any other motorcycle I’ve ever ridden, finally selling it after 103,000 Klm - that is not a typo - one hundred and three thousand kilometers. I sold it at a rock-bottom price to a grateful rider who turned into his first track racer. The R6 has proven itself in the field for so long that resale bikes, parts and aftermarket race conversion kits are abundant. You simply cannot go wrong choosing an R6 as a your race bike for casual or serious track riders.
Suzuki SV650
If the idea of starting out on a full Super Sport bike is a bit too daunting and you don’t want the hassles of upgrading from the lightweight class in a year, then look no further than Suzuki’s SV650. Often called the most popular beginner street bike on
the planet, the SV650 has also found many fans as a first track racer. In production since 1999 there is a metric tonnage of resale inventory in just about any North American market. Like the Ninja 300, don’t be surprised if you come across low mileage bikes with several owners in their past, as many riders buy this as their first street bike and then move into something new after a season or two. There’s also an abundance of lady-driven SV650’s out there, as its light weight and approachable nature makes it very popular with female riders. You can also be fairly confident that a used SV650 hasn’t been thrashed within an inch of its life the way many used Super Sports have been, as it’s just not the kind of bike that appeals to mohawked, tatted squids who spend their time doing burnouts and wheelies in front of the local DQ. That doesn’t mean this bike is tame. Making 73 horsepower at 8,880 RPM, the magic of the SV is its powerband, which is broad, useable and confidence inspiring, with power to spare. The SV650 is so capable on the race course it’s spawned its own class at the Isle of Mann TT, setting a lap record just 5KM short of the overall lap record set by a 750 Yamaha OW01. Aftermarket options and parts not only super-abundant, they’re also cheap. All of these attributes make the SV650 the kind of bike people refer to as a “smart, practical choice.” It doesn’t have the kind of sex appeal that’s going to pump your tires, but it is going to be a ton of fun and forgive your mistakes to keep you progressing confidently within your skill limits.
Kawasaki Ninja 250/300
Joining the Lightweight class at your local track is a cheap, fun way to get into the racing game and build your skills at a low cost of entry. Lightweight class bikes are a popular choice among beginner riders who sell them after a season, so you’re guaranteed to find a bargain with lots of life still left in it. Don’t be surprised to come across low mileage Ninjas that have had several owners in a short lifetime. Some
new riders are so impatient that they trade-up halfway through the season. If you do decide to go this route, resist the temptation to spend a ton of money blinging-out the bike with aftermarket parts. Think of your first Lightweight class bike as a disposable stepping-stone to larger displacement classes, then take the money you save on parts and accessories and put it towards your next ride.
BMW S1000RR
If you’re considering racing litre bikes then you likely have mad skills and money to burn. It takes confidence and ability to manage a litre bike around the track and as with most things in life; things get more expensive as they get bigger. From maintenance to replacement panels and parts, racing a litre bike will be more costly than other classes. If you’re prepared for that kind of commitment, you might as well choose the fastest production bike ever made - BMW’s S1000RR. Since its 2011 introduction, this bike has not only maintained its reputation for being face meltingly fast, BMW’s engineers have also made it lighter and more agile every year. If a 199hp motor that redlines at 14,000 RPM doesn’t blow your hair back, then may I suggest a T-65 X-Wing Starfighter, perhaps? I know where you can pick one up cheap on the desert planet Tatooine. The real charm of the S1000R is that it’s a genuinely fun bike to ride, for all skill levels. Renowned as much for its intuitive handling and safety features as much as for its mind-bending available power, the BMW S1000RR comes with multiple riding modes that drop horsepower and enhance rideability for different skills and track condition. Their use as instructional bikes at road racing schools proves everyday that these attributes aren’t just a marketing spin. If you’re going to go big, you might as well go all the way. If you can afford it, you won’t be disappointed with S1000RR.

It’s no secret that vintage is all the rage in motorcycling right now and the

same goes for road racing. If vintage is your thing, then focus your search on Japanese bikes from the 1980’s in the 500cc range. While anything before 1980 is becoming rare and overpriced as they’re snapped-up by hipsters looking to do a cafe racer mod before the next Distinguished Gentlemen’s ride, 1980’s bikes are still plentiful and cheap. It was also a reliable period for bike manufactures, as quality management principles saw early adoption by the Japanese (hands -up if you
remember the word ‘Kaizen”). Since you won’t be worrying about fairings and racing kits, a new suspension, new tires and a different set of handlebars are pretty much the only mods you’ll need. One vintage bike I consider an absolute steal is Honda’s FT500, also known in later iterations as the VT500FT. Honda made this shaft drive model as a track-inspired version of its venerable CB450/550. “FT” actually stands for flat-track and you can see the racing inspiration in the nar-
row chassis, side plate, V-twin engine and exhaust. It doesn’t take much imagination to envision a stripped down VT, with low handlebars and a number plate, and the internet is full of old bikes that have found new life converted for track use. VT’s have a friendly powerband and easy handling that will inspire confidence and build skills at the track. Unfortunately, this model wasn’t popular, so it does require a little more searching. The good news is that unpopularity translates into

Ebike - Rules, what Rules?
For the record, these things aren’t my favourite my choice of ride either. They zip in and out of traffic, jumping between sidewalks and streets; sometimes they ignore traffic rules and signs, and can be driven unlicensed and unregistered. As someone who does not ride an E-bike, I unfortunately have a number of misinformed ideas about E-bikes. What does it takes to ride one? What rules do E-bikes have to follow? And how safe are they anyways? I took the time to inform myself a little about these bikes with no lanes and thought I would share this with you fine folks. All the regulations that I talk about are Ontario based, but the safety portion is pretty standard. First off, what counts as an E-bike in Ontario? According to the MTO, an Ebike must have pedals, cap off at a top speed of 32 km/h and weigh less than 120 pounds. The pedal thing is pretty standard for most small engines, since they’re classified as power assisted bicycles and require a secondary means of generating power. The idea is, if your engine gives out in the middle of the road, you can pedal your sorry self over to the curb. Also, you’ll need a bike helmet and be at least 16 years old to ride an E-bike. So now that you’ve got your E-bike to spec, had your sweet sixteen and found a sick new bike helmet where can you ride? Instead of answering the question of where you can you ride your E-bike, the MTO gives us a list of where you can’t ride: highways, bike paths, bike trails, sidewalks, and municipal roads. This last one is a little strange, it’s basically saying that Ebikes are not allowed to ride on city roads, yet I still see them everywhere. So what’s the deal with that? The idea is that each municipality has freedom to make their own rules regarding E-bikes. Some cities let E-bikes ride in the bike lane, some don’t, some limit them to low speed roads, some allow them on streets. You’ll have to check your municipality for more specific rules. As far as road rules are concerned, Ebikes should be following all the rules that a cyclist does, but they are not allowed to take up a driving lane the way a moped or motorcycle does. Next thing I always wonder when I see an E-bike is: do they have a license for that thing? Do they need one? This is
a little up in the air too. Technically, you don’t need a license to ride an E-bike, but if your license has been suspended under the criminal act of Canada, then you can’t ride one. Getting a DUI is considered part of the criminal act of Canada, so don’t believe people who tell you E-bikers are stuck driving those things because they got a DUI, legally they might as well be driving a Ducati if they get stopped by a cop. If your license suspension is not part of the criminal act of Canada, say unpaid fines, then you are within your legal rights to ride an E-bike. But if this is a real life case for you, please get legitimate legal council, don’t quote a motorcycle magazine column to the judge. Now, if you don’t have a license you’re in the clear, ride your E-bike to your heart’s content and within the legal framework of your city. You also don’t need insurance for an E-bike, or to register them and pay for license plates/stickers. With all the legal stuff out of the way, the next thing I always wonder is how safe are those things? Because E-bikes are somewhere between a bicycle and motor vehicle, people on both sides have their own reasons to question the safety of E-bikes. Cyclists find them too fast and quiet, riders find them too slow and quiet, and many more seem to have a consensus that they drive carelessly and hardly follow any road rules. These points are just as valid as the counter points. To the cyclists that say E-bikes are too quiet and slow, they should take a look at their own vehicles and how quiet and fast they can be. Motorists who complain about how slow E-bikes go should also be reminded that they are legally required to share the road with Mopeds, which don’t go that much faster than Ebikes anyways. To this last point of safety, I think it’s a question of respect among drivers in all forms of transportation to follow the rules of the road. There are countless car drivers who cut off bikes and cause accidents, plenty of bikes that weave into traffic haphazardly, cyclists who cut pedestrians off, E-bikes that go on sidewalks and mopeds that take up bike lanes. The point here is that we’re all responsible for following the rules and maintaining a safe driving environment on our roads, and E-bikes shouldn’t be singled out in this conversation.
If you are a fan of 1980’s style TV drama with a sprinkle of comedy and all-you-can-eat, fast-paced motorcycle action, look no further than classic TV series CHiPs. Made famous in the late 1970s and early 80s. Originally starring Erik Estrada (Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello) and Larry Wilcox (Officer Jonathan Baker), the series regularly featured over-thetop motorway pileups and high speed chases, quickly making it a favourite among motorcycle heads of all ages. The show featured a number of motorcycles typical of the CHP at the time, in particular late 1970’s Kawasaki muscle bikes. Running for six seasons, the original show last aired in 1983, with a small revival in 1999 in the form of a 90-minute TV movie. Some 40 years after the airing of the first episode, CHiPs returns with a brand new feature film. Due to be released on March 24, the film stars comedian Dax Shepard (Officer Baker) and actor Michael Pena (Ponch). In light of the return of this motoring classic to our screens, we take a look at some of the special bikes of everyone’s favourite motorcycle cops, as well as the newest. Have you ever dreamed of one day owning something that seemed out of reach? Sure, I guess we all have. To dream the impossible dream. I think some old crooner did a song about that or maybe it was a Broadway show. We read about knights in armour setting out on their Quests to find the Holy Grail or slay mean dragons. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. It’s something that I am sure we all do. Mine was to own a 1969 Kawasaki H1 500 triple. This was my Holy Grail. There were only about 6300 made in the world and many were crashed so that kind of pared down the remaining number. These bikes, because they were the first year and took the motorcycle world by storm, are extremely sought after by people with a lot more money than me. Rusted barn finds were going for up to $8000 US on ebay. If anyone had one they seemed to think

that they could retire on the proceeds and much to my personal chagrin, other people were shelling out this kind of ridiculous money. So, as I said earlier, I thought that my dream would remain just that, a pipe dream. I tried on a few different occasions to get one but ended up failing miserably as the bids went into the stratosphere. I would just shake my head and say I tried. Sometimes I would wonder why I wasn’t born rich. I had more or less conceded that I would have to be satisfied with some of the other model years such as the orange H1B, the chick magnet in Kawasaki circles. Demented circles mind you. I would scour ebay and Kijiji looking, and hoping, that I could sneak in and snare one. Of course, to no avail. Well, a little while ago another 69 came up on ebay. I watched and expected that,

as usual, the bidding would rapidly climb and I would be left shaking my head and feeling sorry for myself. The bike went about 4 days with no action what so ever and finally someone placed the opening bid. I watched until there was one day left and still, no more bids. I got thinking, maybe just maybe… The night before the bidding was to end I brought my plan into action. My plan involved red wine, lots of red wine, not for me. The LSW loves red wine. I know what you’re thinking, that’s cheating. That’s sneaky and under-handed. Sure, of course it is. Well after a few nice glasses, for her that is, I was drinking light beer so I could have my wits about me to carry out my nefarious plan. I gently broached the subject of a certain 69 H1 on ebay that no one was bidding on. I was thinking of bidding but I was certain, and I really was certain, that someone with money would bid at the last minute and I would walk away empty handed again. As I filled her glass again, she said to go ahead and place a bid. There was some talk of how hard I work and my dreams and other stuff like that too. I really don’t remember because I was looking down from Cloud 9. Because I was the author of the aforementioned sneaky plan, I decided to try and make sure that I would snag my Holy Grail. chimes in with scant seconds remaining in the listing and places a higher bid. I downloaded it just before the bidding got down to the last while. The listing was down to 1 minute left and SNIPE had done nothing. I didn’t trust it to work so, I placed a bid on my own. With about 5 seconds left, SNIPE hit and outbid me. I had beaten myself and put the bidding up by $100. I have to tell myself that it was the best $100 I have ever spent. I was the owner of a 69 Kawasaki H1! I was happy. No, I mean I was really happy. Truthfully, I may have even shed a tear. So, now you think the story is over. The guy fulfills his dream and they all live happily ever after. Not so fast, crap happens. We do a lot of shipping out to Western Canada at work so I contacted our shipping company for a better rate. The Toronto office for the shipper said “no problem, we’ll do it just give us the address.” The seller crated the bike for a nominal fee, I paid him by email transfer and we were ready to go. I gave the shipper the address in Winnipeg and I was told the pick up would be the next Friday. The poor seller waited all day for them and they didn’t show. I was at a Kawasaki rally in Paris and had my phone in my pocket all day. At 6:20 it rang and a very irate seller talked to me about waiting all day for nothing and peppered his statement with a couple expletives. I couldn’t blame him and I apologized profusely on

behalf of the shipping company. It seems that the driver did not have a bill of lading so he would not go to pick it up. I was told it was a minor miscommunication by the shippers. We made up a bill of lading and sent it to the seller so as not to have the same problem again. He said that it may be easier for him to deliver the crated bike to their yard rather than the seller wait around his house all day for a truck to possibly show up. Off across Winnipeg he went merrily after loading a 600 lb crate into his pick up truck . Now I tend to believe the seller but I really don’t know but the shipping company claims that he did not have a bill of lading so they refused the crate. So, once again and, not so merrily, he went back across Winnipeg and unloaded a 600 lb crate off his pick up. Happy , happy. Guess what? I received another phone call from the seller and once again heard that he thought that the shipping company’s employees were not born of married parents and that was the good part of the conversation. There were a few extra expletives. After another long-winded conversation with the shipping company’s Toronto office, we decided that we would send the bill of lading directly to them so the local Winnipegian driver would be loaded with the appropriate paper work from the beginning. Remarkably, all went off without a hitch, finally, and the bike in its crate was on board and on its way. The seller sent me a picture of the crate on the truck and commented on how much stronger he felt after man handling a 600 lb. crate a few times. We’re here to please. That wasn’t the end. You would think that having the crate on a transport and on its way would be the end of the story and they all live happily after. Again reality rears its ugly head. The 2 day ride from Winnipeg took two weeks. Ok, being generous, we can allow a day at each end of the trip for loading and handling and then the obvious 2 day drive from Winnipeg to Toronto. I had to have it sent to my office because there is no tailgate delivery to my rural home. Again, that’s OK. I work for a European Company and we import product by the container load. I was told that I had to have the crate in and out before 2 containers were due and by figuring on about a week for delivery, once again because I am the generous type , I thought that I had lots of time. I had taken a couple holidays to spend with the LSW. Well, the shipment was a week late and the containers were due in on a Wednesday. I had taken off the Monday and Tuesday of that week so I had to tell her that I had to get to Toronto to get the Grail before Wednesday. She was a little disappointed to be deprived of my smiling face and razor – sharp wit for a day but understood. Of course, then the call from work came saying that the containers had arrived early and my crate was boxed in, so to speak. I hitched up the trailer and off I went. I arrived at our warehouse to find just what they had told me. The bike crate was hemmed in by 20 large crates. Luck was with me and I had access to one end of the crate. I have to give credit where credit is due, the seller had built a crate like a castle with wood and lots of nails. It was a struggle but I finally got it apart. The top had one surviving nail that I couldn’t get out so I was pulling on the top and it slammed back down catching my hand in a pinch

worthy of a wrestler in WWE. It’s ok though, scars add character. I manhandled it out of the crate. Both tires were flat making the pushing a little harder than push starting a full sized car. I snaked it through a maze of skids and crates from the container shipments and out the door to my trailer. I had already put the ramp on and I finally managed to get it up the ramp and onto the trailer on pancake - like tires. I have developed a trailer technique because I always prefer to be self sufficient rather than bugging people for their help. My technique is to run the bike up to the end of the channel on the trailer, put it on it’s side stand and put a tie down strap loosely on the left and then go around to the right and put on the right strap and tighten it. As the right strap tightens the left does too as the bike levels out. My 70 Kawasaki has a bent side stand and tilts much more so I put a thin board under the stand to level the bike more. Well this stand was more erect and I guess I didn’t need the board because after I had loosely put on the left strap and as I walked to the right side the bike fell over and landed upside down beside the trailer. After pushing my heart back down from my throat to my chest, I found only a small dent in the top of the gas tank. So it was only a matter of wrestling it backwards on flat tires, after righting it that is, pushing it back up the ramp, taking out the board and quickly tying it down. Surprisingly enough, I had an uneventful drive home with it remaining on the trailer the whole time and the new baby arrived home. Now, I could see the occasional other motorist looking at the guy with the POS bike on a trailer going up Highway 400. The looks seemed to be sure that I was going to a dump to donate landfill. Regardless, it was home. Of course, the LSW had to come and see the new addition to the ever-growing family. Of course, she also had to tell me in no uncertain words what she thought about the condition of the dream that I had just purchased and fulfilled. I think that she called it closer to a nightmare. As a matter of fact, I am certain of that. I once again had to use my well-rehearsed lines such as “ diamond in the rough.,” “what these things are going for,” and “eye of the beholder.” They are my most common phrases used while talking to her. I must also say that since she has heard them all before, that they don’t seem to affect her opinion too much anymore. No surprise there. There were more surprises to come but I think that I will tell you about those later. I have only one question now. What do you dream about and strive for when you have just realized your dream? What did those knights of old do when they returned successfully from their quests? It kind of makes you wonder doesn’t it?

Mopar CSBK Confirms 2017 Canadian National Road Racing Tour
The Mopar CSBK Canadian National motorcycle road racing series will include five weekends in 2017, at four established venues and one new track: Grand Bend Motorplex in a resort area on Lake Huron, Ontario. While the second round at Grand Bend‚ Technical Layout on June 8-11 will mark a debut for the Mopar CSBK tour, Shannonville Motorsport Park will host the 53rd National races held at the track, a record for the series. More often that not, the CSBK tour, launched in 1980, has opened at Shannonville. In eleven of the past 15 years, the Pro racer who has won that SMP opener has gone on the clinch the overall number one plate and Canada Cup.

Vinales Records Top Spot at 2017 Qatar MotoGP Maverick Vinales hailed an “incredible feeling” as he claimed victory on his Yamaha debut at the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix. Vinales, quickest throughout pre-season testing, lined up on pole position after a 45-minute delay, caused by a brief shower at Losail, but dropped to fifth on the opening lap. Vinales moved up to third in the wake of crashes for Johann Zarco and Andrea Iannone, before passing Marc Marquez, setting up a duel with Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso. Vinales repeatedly forced his way past Dovizioso through the flowing section at the back end of the circuit, only for the Italian
to utilise his superior straight-line speed to move ahead. Vinales eventually exerted his authority on the penultimate lap, pulling sufficiently clear of Dovizioso prior to the pit straight, and crossed the line with a half-second lead to record his second MotoGP win.

Jordan Szokes to defend title under Mopar Express Lane Banner Eleven-time Canadian Superbike Champion Jordan Szoke is launching his Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship title defense under the banner of Mopar Express Lane. Szoke is the most decorated athlete in the series, earning the BMW Motorrad World Trophy alongside his Canadian title in 2016. Szoke was also recently inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame. Szoke is rolling into 2017 with a perfect previous season and undefeated in the Series since Atlantic Motorsport Park in the summer of 2014. The 50’s were a different time in Japan. With WWII over, the whole country was in recovering and re-adjusting to the new state of the country. With the dissolution of imperial Japan and the literal rebuilding of cities, there was a shift in the culture toward something more modern and western. Some people worried with rapid modernization and re-building, that there might also be the risk of losing what was inherently Japanese. This was felt most among the young and lower class members of Japan’s new modern society. Many went to regular jobs and worked at offices, but there were a loud few that chose to voice their suspicion of this wave of modernization. They created a unique subculture that mixed the tenants of feudal japan with the modern mechanization of industry. From the ashes of WWII a new subculture was born on the shores of Japan: The Bosozoku. A unique cultural phenomena, the Bosozoku is an interesting mix. They are part bike gang, part fashion movement, a dash of youthful protest and an attempt at preserving the traditional Japanese reverence for elders and ancestors. The name has a couple of loose translations: Thunder tribe, Speed tribe, Reckless tribe, but essentially they were a force of havoc and disorder. There are some parallels to the greaser culture of North America and Europe, but where they draw an obvious distinction is their choice of bikes. Unlike their western bike subculture counterparts, Bosozoku riders had no use for American and British models. Not only was there little money for expensive imported bikes, but at the time

the Japanese market was flooding with affordable models. Honda CB’s, Suzuki GS’s and Kawasaki’s were all put to use in Bosozoku circles and modded in some of the most memorable ways seen yet. Where western youth were obsessed with small, compact, light, cheap and inconspicuous bikes, the Bosozoku built their custom machines large and loud. The bikes were not only large and loud, but so were their numbers. Although most of the members were youth, generally under the age of 20, their numbers ballooned in a few short decades. They reached their peak membership in the 80’s with around 42,000 members. These numbers were split up among the different Bosozoku gangs, but it wouldn’t be uncommon for a gang to have a gathering of over 1000 riders in a night. They gathered around a common cause, to annoy the piss out of the neighborhood. They would spend their nights street racing, rhythmically revving their engines, disturbing the peace, waving Japanese imperial flags, starting fights and generally wreaking havoc in neighborhoods and streets at night. The gangs all had their own territories and would use guerrilla tactics to defend their turf, using everything from Molotov cocktails to hidden ropes, pulled to trip rival gang bikers. The attitude that “there’s no tomorrow” was important to the organization and encouraged members to act reckless and bravely. Fighting was central to the gang’s activities, giving members a sense that they were the embodying spirit of Samurai, by risking their selves and bodies in acts that they saw as courageous. The image of the Samurai was important for the members as an archetype, it provided both an ideal
character traits to strive for and a moral code to follow. They also styled some of their dress to match the Samurai. They wore long robes and propped flags on their bikes, mimicking the Samurai charging into battle. Some strived to be a Koha figure, a “man of character”, with self discipline and tact. They were concerned with traditional characters of masculinity; bravery, stoicism, and violence. Not only was this an outlet for youth to rebel and take out frustrations against a culture they found no place in, one they saw as bland and unappealing, but it also gave them a sense of community that most members seemed to be missing. All these ingredients mixed together created the perfect training ground for other, more dangerous gangs. At the height of the phenomenon, ranks of the Yakuza were even conscripted from these Bosozoku hooligans. But, the most memorable part of the Bosozoku are the bikes. These mid-priced, Japanese motorcycles are customized to the extreme. The look is large, bright and obnoxious and an obvious attention grabber, customized to rattle your brains and burn out your pupils. They sport giant exhausts that roar through the street, and massive fairings, tapered like a missile’s payload, with headlights that light up the night. The backrests usually jut out in the sky like a shark on the prowl and giant waving flags hang from the back. Sometimes riders would wave imperial rising sun flags, other times they would wave the giant black flags of their gang. The handlebars are bent down and inward, making it easier for the rider to weave through traffic and the license plates are bent up to avoid anyone seeing them.
In the 90’s a series of road laws were passed that made Bosozoku gatherings nearly impossible in their traditional numbers. Harsher fines, strict penalties, increased arrestes intimidated many members out of the practice, and the membership started to plummet. From their peak at around 42,000 members in the 80’s, the numbers continued to drop as younger generations could no longer relate to the lifestyle and mythology of the Bosozoku. Estimates of current membership are around 7000-6000. Most recently, the last Bosozoku tuning and lifestyle magazine has announced that they will suspend their publication, the last issue just came out in November 2016 and marks the end of an era in the subculture. Although most male riders have left the group there is a growing number of female riders who are identifying as Bosozoku. Where the original beliefs of the gang centered around masculine ideals, these new riders are using it as a way to challenge traditional female roles in Japanese culture. Instead of succumbing to domestic lifestyles, these women break away from Japanese gender stereotypes and prove that a woman can do what they like, be in a gang, ride a motorcycle or smash your windows in with a bat. This is also creating a shift in the style. The colors of the bikes are changing, there are more stickers and decals too. But the riders also present themselves in an ironically feminine way, long wavy hair, glossy lips, pointed nails, and pink and purple everywhere. Iin a strange way, the real survival of Bosozoku culture is in its appeal to all disenfranchised groups, giving those without a voice something loud and colorful to blast into the streets.
