Reports from the US indicate HarleyDavidson has trademarked the name “Revelation” in association with electric vehicles (not the vehicles themselves, but components, particularly drivetrain assemblies and batteries). Of course, that sounds a lot like some other famous Harley-Davidson engines: the Evolution, the Revolution and Revolution-X. We can expect to see the new HarleyDavidson electric motorcycle by 2020, according to the company’s marketeers; in last month’s flurry of MoCo news, along with the details on the company’s finances, we also saw a re-up on the promises of an electric motorcycle in the coming months. We still don’t know what the bike itself will be called when it makes it to market. Of course, the concept bike, which made the rounds in 2014-2015, was called the Livewire. It’s been a few years since that machine was visiting dealerships, though, and by 2020, we’ll likely see some changes to that original concept.

MV Agusta Recall Recall #: 2018074 • Number of Vehicles: 8 Models Involved: 2015-2016 MV Agusta F4 RR, F4 RC • Problem: On certain motorcycles, a crack within the polyphenilene sulphide (PPS) piston of the front brake master cylinder could occur. This could result in the master cylinder to not be able to generate sufficient hydraulic pressure, which could lead to a loss of braking capability of the front brake. Dealers will replace the PPS piston with one made from aluminum. Note: This recall is for the same braking components that we saw recalled in Ducati, Aprilia, Husqvarna and KTM motorcycles. For Brembo PR16 front brake master cylinders.

Triumphs’ New Speed Triple More power and tech for Triumph’s super-naked Triumph has revealed its updated Speed Triple, with a host of upgrades and more power. Two versions of the 1050cc super-naked triple, the S and RS editions, both get engine updates boosting power

from 140 to 150hp. Both get a TFT colour dash, cruise control and illuminated switchgear, while the high-spec RS edition also gains a keyless ignition and lean-angle sensitive traction control and cornering ABS. Triumph says 105 parts have been changed to make the engine higher-

revving, with peak power occurring 7% higher in the range, at 10,500rpm. Peak torque is 86.2lbft at 7,150rpm. The RS’s cornering-optimised traction control and ABS are delivered courtesy of a new inertial measurement unit which monitors chassis orientation. continued on PG. 03

It’s Still Winter Well, it’s March now and like every year, it’s the one month of the year that can go either way. Sometimes in March Mother Nature will give us a head start on spring and other times it’s her last chance to extend the miserable wintery weather. According to some fat groundhog who resides in Wiarton, he saw his shadow which loosely translates to him needing to go on a diet from over a decade of overeating and hibernation, and I’m pretty sure he hasn’t seen his dangly bits in as many years, poor Willy. I am a proud grandfather now, meaning that I am close to being considered an old fart, having said that, I find that I look back on winters as a younger fellow and recall how much fun I had outside in the worst conditions. I would spend hours with my toboggan playing in the snow, soaked through all the layers and as uncomfortable as it was, when it was time for supper, it was agony having to go home. A waterlogged snowsuit, nose running like a tap and cheeks as red as strawberries with my mittens caked with ice-balls an inch thick. I must have been a real sight for my mother, but then, it was about having fun. Those days are long gone. Did I mention ‘I hate winter’. The mere mention of winter and I begin to shiver. As we move through the month of March there will likely be days where the temps reach double digits and everyone will get spring fever to get out for a putt. There are those of you (myself included) who have spent the last few months preparing for the fist ride, but before you pull the bike out of storage take a moment to consider if you are ready? If you are

a seasoned rider then you have a pretty good idea of what it takes to get your-self ready for those first rides. For many newer riders, it’s more important, to make sure you’re as ready and prepared as your bike is. First thing to remember is that cars will not be on the lookout for you on two wheels (not that they are any other time of the year) but early spring rides are more associated with accidents than the summer months, as drivers expect to see bikes back on the road. It always takes a couple of months of conditioning by the media and the MTO to get drivers to remember to keep an eye out for us. In March, they simply just don’t expect us. So it’s more important than ever to do your shoulder checks at stops and before proceeding through intersections, make sure you see what’s approaching and keep an eye on them. What we choose to wear is another important element in keeping safe during the early spring rides. Brighter colours like safety vests over leather jackets or a brighter coloured helmet will help you be seen. As we move closer to the summer solstice, each day will get longer by two minutes. That may not seem like much, but what it does is entice riders to stay out a little longer as the spring and summer approach. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to dress in layers. Daytime temperatures may reach near bikini temps, but as the evening falls, so does the temperature. It’s not uncommon to experience below freezing temps many evenings in the spring and if you are not prepared by wearing layers, wind chills at speed can cause the onset of fatigue and impair your abil-

ity to make good safe riding choices. If you have saddle bags, be sure to include a pair chaps or thermal underclothes and an extra long sleeve t-shirt. And here is a tip given to me from an old biker — if you are limited on space — a pair of pantyhose will rollup nice and small and be able to be carried in a pocket if necessary (how sexy they are is a matter of personal choice). A quick stop at a gas station to add on an extra layer can make a big difference in your comfort level while riding on cool spring nights. Gauntlet gloves, especially ones with some insulation are a much better choice than the average leather riding gloves. They prevent wind from driving up your sleeves and cooling down your core. It won’t matter how warm your jacket is if cold air is allowed to essentially be piped directly to your torso. Another great idea is to keep your speeds down during the evenings as much as possible. With an outside temperature of just five degrees celsius travelling at a mere 50kph will result in a wind chill factor of minus one degree. Rural areas tend to cool down faster than urban areas. Buildings and brick or concrete structures tend to retain the suns heat during the day and radiate it back during the night. I’ve seen temperature fluctuations of as much as five to seven degrees between country roads and a downtown street. The best thing to remember is simply be prepared for whatever mother nature throws at you. The more prepared you are the more enjoyable your early spring rides will be. Take care, be prepared and live to ride another day.

Air Canada Motorcycle Shipping Program is back!

Air Canada is running its discount program for motorcycle shipping again in 2018, and they’ve just determined the prices. In the past few years, Air Canada has been running a promotion that allows riders to ship their motorcycles in the cargo holds of widebody jets. We’ve had several CMG readers who’ve used the service, and while there’s been some confusion over pricing in the past, most have been happy with the service and pricing. Now, Air Canada says it’s offering the program again, for its usual April 1-September 30 season. But unlike years past, which saw the airline offering flat rates through its promotional

materials, customers must now call in to get pricing on flights. And, we’ve been told that the price tag is higher this year, thanks to increases in the cost of jet fuel. Remember, Air Canada only offers this service to specific destinations. In the past, South America has been on the list, then off the list, thanks to issues with government red tape on the other end. However, flights to Europe and inside Canada should be back on as usual. For more details on how to prep your bike, where you can fly to, and how much it will cost, your best bet is to contact Air Canada after checking out their documents on the shipping process.

Harley-Davidson announces 115th Anniversary Celebration Plans Milwaukee will be the center of the motorcycle universe Labor Day weekend when Harley-Davidson riders and fans gather for the culmination of a year-long celebration of 115 years of riding freedom and the most-iconic brand. Plans for the Harley-Davidson 115th Anniversary Milwaukee Celebration, set for August 29 – September 2, include new venues, first-ever motorcycle racing and an unmatched taste of moto-culture. “Harley-Davidson is gearing up to celebrate 115 years of the world’s best motorcycles here in Milwaukee,” said Bill Davidson, Vice President, Harley-Davidson Museum. “We’re welcoming everyone, motorcycle riders and non-riders alike from around the world, to the birthplace of HarleyDavidson to join in the celebration.” New for the 115th anniversary in Milwaukee will be motorcycle events throughout the city. Harley-Davidson will host – for the first time ever – beach motorcycle racing on Bradford Beach on the shores of Lake Michigan, as well as sponsoring “Run What You Brung” drag racing, Flat Out Friday flat-track racing and so much more. With acres of free outdoor activities all weekend long, the Harley-Davidson Museum will be the epicenter of 115th Anniversary activities in Milwaukee. The Museum will host motorcycle field games, a custom bike show, tattoo artists, live music, local food and more. “This is an anniversary like no other we have thrown before,” said Heather Malenshek, Vice President, Marketing, Harley-Davidson. “It’s one you can’t miss, so don’t wait. Come this year and experience the excitement and thrill of motorcycle culture up close in all of its roaring, revved-up glory.”

The Milwaukee 115th anniversary celebration will start thousands of miles away on Tuesday, August 21 with Harley-Davidson Rides Home. Led by Motor Company executives, the Harley-Davidson Rides Home will convoy to Milwaukee, stopping at dealerships and adding more riders along the way. “The rumble of our Milwaukee 115th Anniversary Celebration will truly be heard across the United States as Harley-Davidson Rides Home launch from the four corners of the country with rides rolling into Milwaukee from Seattle, San Diego, Ft. Lauderdale and Portland, Maine,” added Malenshek. Fans can begin celebrating the 115th Anniversary today on social media using #HD115. Harley-Davidson is launching a global movement to celebrate freedom by collecting stories from fans around the world. The authors of the best 115 stories will receive a commemorative stainless-steel rivet displayed in a place of honor on the grounds of the Harley-Davidson Museum.Additionally, one Monday in every month leading up to the anniversary in Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson will hand over the reins of its social media channels to an H-D fan. They’ll share their stories and lead the conversation at #MotorcycleMonday to help extend weekends for all freedom-loving individuals who are part of our community today and for those yet to join. A complete list of 115th Anniversary events and activities – including rides home details, Rally-Pack specifics and their exclusive benefits, motorcycle rentals, organized local rides, tour routes, street parties, as well as lodging and camping – is available at H-D.com/115.

Ducati introduced two important new liter-class motorcycles in November at EICMA, the Panigale V4 and the Scrambler 1100, both of which required major efforts on behalf of the technical staff of the Bolognese make to bring them to life—and now, production. Euro 4 emissions sounded like a death notice for any version of Ducati’s air-cooled SOHC V-twin displacing more than 800cc. But “ol’ reliable”— derived from on Dr. Fabio Taglioni’s Pantah project—still had a few trump cards hidden up its sleeve. Taglioni’s disciple, Dr. Gigi Mengoli, made brilliant use of those cards, and the renewed powerplant sports the same 1,079cc displacement of the last Monster 1100. Bore and stroke—98.0 x 71.5mm—are unchanged. The 11.0:1 compression ratio is surprisingly high for an air-cooled engine. This was adopted mainly to improve combustion chamber thermodynamic efficiency and deliver a solid torque curve that peaks at a claimed 65.2 pound-feet at just 4,750 rpm.

Peak power, 86 hp at 7,500 rpm, is less than that of the Monster 1100, and this is the toll the two-valve-per-cylinder engine paid to keep its emissions within Euro 4 limits. To this purpose, rather soft cam timing was adopted featuring only 16 degrees of overlap. In addition, this twin breathes through a single 55mm throttle body and employs twin-spark ignition and auxiliary air for clean, thorough combustion of the intake charge. The 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust has a massive central catalytic converter and dual underseat mufflers. There are three versions: Scrambler 1100, Scrambler 1100 Special, and Scrambler 1100 Sport. All share the same V-twin engine, basic frame structure, and chassis geometry—59.6-inch wheelbase, 24.5 degrees of rake, 4.4 inches of trail, and 31.9-inch seat height. While the Scrambler 1100 and the 1100 Special are separated only by graphic and finish details, the Sport features Öhlins suspension, a meaningful upgrade over the Marzocchi fork and Kayaba shock of the others. Bosch cornering ABS and traction control are standard.

Curtiss Motorcycles Unveils First Bike in 100 Years

It will also be the manufacturer’s last internal combustion motorcycle LAST YEAR Confederate Motorcycles rebranded to Curtiss Motorcycles, making the manufacturer’s newest model the first to be launched under the Curtiss badge in one hundred years. The limited edition Warhawk pays homage to the man behind America’s first VTwin motorcycle, Glenn Curtiss. Fittingly, the Warhawk will also be the last V-Twin that the company will produce as it moves from internal combustion to electric propulsion. Housed in a dramatic, brutish chrome frame is the 2,163cc 56.25º V-TWIN, which makes 150bh and 160lb-ft at 2,000 RPM. Despite its incredible power, the Warhawk is as much a showpiece as it is a motorcycle, thanks to its bespoke, intricate detail. ‘We’ve spent the past 27 years working to optimize and perfect Mr. Curtiss’s V-Twin invention,’ commented Curtiss CEO Matt Chambers. ‘Everything we know is built into this

machine. Because the Warhawk is based on our acclaimed P51 Fighter, the engine, powertrain, and chassis are as solid as a bank vault. But now, we’ve cranked it to 11. There are no more rabbits we can pull out of the proverbial hat. There’s simply no way to make a more explosive hot-rod American Vtwin than the Curtiss Warhawk.’ ‘The American V-twin is undoubtedly the most iconic and revered powertrain in motorcycle history. As we prepare to lead an allnew golden age of electrified motorcycles, this Curtiss Warhawk represents the best and final chapter in American V-Twin power and refinement. ‘We’re building a handful of these Warhawks in honor of Mr. Curtiss and as a bequeathment from the brand of yesterday to the brand of tomorrow.’ At the same time as revealing its rebranding, Confederate Motorcycles also announced a partnership with Zero Motorcycles, in order to create an all-electric cruiser named the Hercules.

“Ok, trust me on this.” Mike flashed a moment of seriousness from inside his Shoei. “When we turn onto my road you can’t wheelie, there’s not enough room to get it back down and you’ll never make my driveway.” Laugh lines tattled on the devious smile behind the chin bar, a veil over his own failed attempts. I glanced at Mark and with almost imperceptible gestures of readiness we snicked into first gear and began. Destine for Mikes home in Bailieboro we left Port Hope and the Great Lake behind and after a few kilometers on the multi lane 401 we escaped to the swooping single track of county road 10. I was in some dam fast company and felt at ease as our trio maintained a tidy flight on the fast but sometimes bumpy road. Many years on the street and enough closed course laps to know the secret I rode with confidence but these regular cohorts of mine were well beyond my station. Mike is decisive, fast and calculating, a fixture at the front whether on a track or the road. Mark, a new member to our group back then quietly and confidently let us know he was fast on a national level and would go on to prove it, winning the Parts Canada amateur 600 championship a few years later. Whether you’re a neophyte, a 1 percenter, a racer or found somewhere between, trust is the foundation we all depend on and perhaps it’s the threat of death that regulates how deep our bonds run. Later that day I would explore this theory as I balanced on the edge of catastrophe, quite literally. Speed combined with close proximity is always a risk but the level of trust and skill among participants will naturally determine how close, is close. I settled into the second position with Mark close enough behind I could hear his big Gixxer and I knew Mike, only a few meters ahead, was equally aware. Fast? Oh yes, we rode fast but a steady fast because the cut and thrust that we knew from the race track has no place on the street. Of course there is great trust among racers but move that level of riding onto the unpredictable street and it all falls apart. Its not just what you think of the other rider, its what you think of everything. At race pace we must know and trust every detail in our world and that is an impossibility on the street. A moment after Mike slid from right to left cheek off the R1’s seat I followed suit and behind I knew Mark would mimic the change a tick after as we flowed together as one. Three riders with three individual minds sliced through the exact same space moments apart with centimeters measuring the

Trust

differences and even less between our thoughts. It must begin within us because without trust, disaster is assured. Our six wheeled express banked into the fast uphill left rapidly closing on the lone car. I saw the line adjustment needed as Mike chose it and a moment later Mark made the perfect push on the Suzuki’s left bar to follow suit. Effortlessly and safely we corrected our path and zoomed past the cager. Directly linked to our survival instinct its no wonder that it can be so elusive and painfully immediate when lost. Our lives are dictated by the pleasure and the pain that is trust and our world has hardened us. Throttles blipped and almost in unison hands and feet slow danced with the controls containing the fury, we were there. Down to first gear as I watched Mike accelerate away towards his house and as I turned to follow I broke the trust that was forged in our friendship. Arrogance and the lure of an RC 51’s torque tricked me into disregarding my warning and as the big v twin swept passed 4000 rpm my id stomped on a cowering ego and with a twist, I balanced on a vertical bike. The detail in a blink of time never fails to amaze me and as I played with the tipping point I saw that Mike was 20 meters in front and abreast of his driveway. I watched him turn his head to the right, towards his house but what registered was him turning around to look directly at me and I saw regret in his eyes. “ I told you Dave, you cant wheelie! Now please, don’t hurt me too bad when I turn into your path, my wife is watching.” Before I chopped the throttle I saw the accident. The underside of my bike smashes Mikes shoulder and how the front tire touches his helmet and grabs hold. I heard the surprised grunt as his head was wrenched by the spinning Dunlop. I saw two friends broken by stupidity. “STOP” and as the front contacted the road I tried my best. Muscle memory started the progressive squeeze and a huge wheelie transitioned into an equally impressive stoppie as the brake loaded the front. As I modulated lever pressure to not endo I remember thinking “Well, can’t stop any faster then this” and I glided past Mike with the ‘51’s rear axle level with his eyes. Turns out Mike had suspected my idiocy and that turn of the helmet was him watching me in the R1’s mirror. We laugh about it today but I saw the glint of disappointment in your eyes Mike and I know that I can never replace that bit of lost respect. A twisted positive though, high speed stoppies are much easier then I thought.

roadtrip Riding on Top of the Rainbow

By Rick Z Wang Life is about creating beautiful, lasting memories. A motorcycle trip on the island of Maui is a memory that is hard to beat. It all started when a friend mentioned “Maui” and “Bikes” in the same sentence. Before you can say “Humuhumunukunukuapua’a” (which is a local fish in Hawaii) we were on our way to the famous island with a motorcycle booked under our names. Leaving the Canadian winter we were greeted with warm tropical breeze as soon as we landed. It took a couple of days to climatize and get rid of our jet lag. When our hearts were ready for the vibration of the four stroke we walked over to the bike rental shop. At the shop, Mark the rental clerk nonchalantly said: “We don’t have the bike you booked so we upgraded you.” I booked a Suzuki Boulevard S40 and they wanted to give me a Honda Shadow 750. That’s almost 100 more cc’s than I was expecting, and twice as powerful as my bike at home. So of course I threw cautions into the tropical breeze and signed my life away on the intake forms. Under Mark’s watchful eyes I rode

away from the parking lot without a hitch, but every hair on my neck was standing up to say “We hope you know what you are doing.” Maui is a small island with mostly good roads. The speed limit is 15 mi/ hr to 55 mi/hr. The road signs are very good and there are no highways. Most importantly, there are no Bay Street lawyers talking on their cellphones while trying to merge onto the expressway. As bikers, our life expectancies are surprisingly high here. And that is a good thing. After cruising for a day and half near the small, amazing beach town of Kihei my wife and I were ready to check out other parts of the island. We set our sight on Lahaina, the old capital of Hawaii. As we pulled around the island we noticed 20-30 wind turbines lining the side of the mountain. Soon we found out why! High speed wind gusts hit us from all directions as I negotiated the tight turns on ocean cliffs. Thanking Honda for making me sit so low, I opened up the throttle to get out of the exposed areas as swiftly as I could. That’s when I heard my wife yell: “ Whales! 9 O’clock! ” Not wanting to take my eyes of the road I yell back: “YOU watch them for me honey!” Lahaina is a charming old port town built in the missionary style (the architectural trend not the sex position). It is a touristy locale with many options for

food and drinks. With the Honda Shadow it is easy to squeeze into a parking spot along the main stretch. At the centre of town is a grandfather of a tree that covers an entire city block. Local artists gather in the shade to sell their crafts. If you are into museums there are a couple of good ones here. For us we were back on the road to a place called The Blow Hole (get your minds out of the gutter!) It is a naturally formed water jet that shoots 40 to 50 feet high. The road to the Blow Hole is less windy but more winding (I always wanted to say that). The wife got nauseous from all the turns on the road. I was a cowboy on a mad bronco, too busy to feel sick. Arriving at the Blow Hole we noticed many memorial crosses. Apparently people die every year when they get too close to the edge. The natural tall water jet was very nice but it makes you want to pee. There is no Porta Potty’s

around so we did our part in watering some endangered plant species. A biking trip to Maui is incomplete without going to the famous Road to Hana. When my wife heard about this dangerous road she proudly said: “Hana? Why that’s my middle name.” It actually is. The tagline for this road is “53 miles, 617 curves, 56 bridges, discover paradise.” We hope the Paradise

is only a figure of speech. Our trip started on a cloudy day which soon turned into a torrential downpour. We turned back to our starting point - Paia to dry up and attempted again. The rain kept on and off all afternoon but we kept going. Rainbows were popping up everywhere around us. It was like being in a Skittles commercial without the calories. On wet roads I ride very conservatively. I let many Jeeps pull ahead by move aside onto the shoulders. Some curves ask you to reduce your speed to 10 miles/hr and honk your horns. If you see the bends you will understand why. All the bridges are shared single lane so you need to honk and yield to oncoming traffic. If you obey the signs and drive like you want to live everything will be just dandy. The attractions along the Road to Hana range from waterfalls to swimming holes; from lookouts to arboretums; from food stands to trees that look like rainbows. Again motorcycles make parking easy. Just make sure people know you are pulling in or out. At the

eyeglasses. Pack some snacks and water for the ride. The weather condition here is unpredictable so plan ahead and have fun. The locals say Maui does not need a rollercoaster ride because they have the Road to Hana. Another beautiful section of the island is Kula. It is miles and miles of paved roads going up the mountain so the air is a lot Kula (sorry about the pun). At the summit is a dormant volcano called Haleakala. You can watch the sunrise there and you can camp right inside the crater. Just make sure you book online because it is a state park with limited access. We did not make it to the top due to time constraints but from what we hear it is an unforgettable journey as well. The biking tour on Maui combines technical rides with amazing views. It challenges every bone in the body and pumps the veins full of adrenaline. When asked to describe the entire experience, both my wife and I shouted out ‘Freedom’ so loudly that even Mel Gibson would have been proud. If your cabin fever is making you long for perfect curves on tropical beaches; if your stiff lower back craves for some four stroke action on pacific open roads then the goddess of Maui is calling you to ride here. Take it easy and hang loose my friends. Side note: There are at least two bike rental companies on Maui. We used Eagleriders. Mark and Donovan are great guys who stored our luggage when we went riding. Just tell them Rick from Canada sent ya.

Tired and hungry riders should consider stay in Hana for the night and head back fresh and rested in the morning. The Road to Hana is definitely the most technical ride I’ve ever done. Clad in a robe, I ventured out onto our back deck this morning, a cup of freshlyground coffee in my hand. The thermometer in the kitchen window indicated it was already 10 degrees celsius and, as long as I stayed in the sunshine and out of the wind, I was toasty. Sarnia, unbeknownst to many Canadians, lies on the same latitude as northern California. That, plus the influence of Lake Huron, provides us with hot, humid summers and mild winters. This winter has been an exception. It has been stinkin’ cold with lots of snow. This morning, lulled by the warmth of the sun on my face, I jumped when my beloved hollered from the garage, “wanna go for a ride?” February 25th and we were thinking about going for our first ride of the season. Our inaugural ride is most often in May. Although it is not my beloved’s favourite ride, I insist on taking the river road from Sarnia to Wallaceburg. It is not just the river that attracts me. It is also the smell of the river. My Beloved says it’s dead fish. For me, it is reminiscent of summer. It takes me back to a place I can’t identify but feel nostalgic about. Today’s ride did not take that route. Not because I didn’t get my way this year, but because it is only the end of February and we knew the wind off the river would be biting. We chose instead to head towards friends who live just out of town. The second reason it felt like the first time was because of the bike I was riding. About 16 years ago, I hopped on the back on my beloved’s Honda 750. It took me about 10 seconds to realize I would love riding and another two seconds to realize I would not be riding two-up. Who wants to look at the back of someone else’s helmet? Granted, I have some control issues. I’m not even a good car passenger because someone else is driving. For the past ten years, I have been riding a black Yamaha 1100 V-Star Classic/ With ghost flames. It fit me well; the floorboards were far more comfortable on long trips than pegs; and the tank timed out just about the same time my legs and back needed stretching. It was going to be my last bike. And then...well then a couple of things happened. The first was a call from my doctor nine months ago. “I’m sorry,” he said. “It’s cancer.” I had had a bit of bleeding and made an appointment after having talked myself into believing I had diverticulitis. My doctor humoured me but sent me for a colonoscopy – just in case I was wrong. And I was wrong. ‘Three-polyps-and-alarge-mass-at-the-bottom-of-my-colon’ kind of wrong. I had a great surgeon who removed everything laparoscopically and the pathologist reported that nothing had spread into my lymph nodes. A few weeks ago, I had my first six-month check-up. It’s all good. So what does colon cancer have to do with another bike? In the five weeks between having surgery and getting the

okay to resume my life, I had a lot of time to think. Many years earlier I had read an article that suggested most people have all their new experiences by the time they are 10 years old. They have tasted all the flavours they will taste; they have heard all the different sounds they are likely to hear; and they will have experienced most of the sensations they will feel. By the age of ten! Whether the information was accurate or not, doesn’t matter. That ‘warning’ had stuck with me. It’s one of the reasons I rock climbed; why I am eager to try new foods; why I hopped on the back of my beloved’s bike; and why I love to travel. In those five weeks I spent pondering my life, I realized – despite having made a huge downsize a few years ago – I still was not spending the majority of time doing the things I really wanted to be doing. The transition from my Yamaha V-Star to my new bike was the result of the time I spend fearing that last summer would, in fact, be my last summer. I promised myself I wouldn’t let another opportunity pass by just because I didn’t ‘need’ it. So I bought a white winter coat. It’s washable, but it’s white. And I began setting aside a couple of hours every day in order to write. And I opted to consider a new bike. When my beloved came home with ‘that look’ on his face a few months back, I was not surprised to hear he had found himself a new ride. It didn’t even surprise me that he had found two new rides. What floored me was these two bikes were matching black Suzuki Bandit 1250s. My Beloved is an amazing man and I am lucky to have him. He has a lot of great qualities but ‘cute’ is not one of them. If, for instance, he were to come downstairs wearing jeans and a white t-shirt and found me dressed in jeans and a white t-shirt, he would go back upstairs and change. ‘We are not that couple,’ he says. After we had been married for about five years, I asked him if he still loved me. His response? ‘I told you the day we got married that I loved you, if anything changes, I’ll let you know.” Despite his disinclination for cuteness, my beloved had been trying to get me onto a sport-tourer for years. And now we would ride matching bikes. I should have listened to him a long time ago. Today, February 25th, was our first ride of the 2018 season. It was the first ride since I worried I may never ride again and it was my first ride on the Bandit 1250. As I downshifted into the first curve, I knew I had found my new love. Quiet but not silent. Responsive but not twitchy. And in return, I was respectful of its potential but not afraid. Today was the first ride of the season on my first sport-tourer on the first day of the rest of my life. It will not be the last. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Just get screened! If you don’t like the idea of a tiny tube in your colon, imagine how you will feel with a scalpel there instead.

Suzuki GSX1400R thought to be coming next year There is hope for motorcyclists mourning the imminent demise of the mighty Hayabusa, the one-time undisputed monarch of straight lines. Suzuki is working on a 1440cc replacement for 2019 according to reports in Japanese motorcycle magazines – which are usually accurate with their predictions – as well as Italian site Insella. The ‘GSX1400R’ Hayabusa is expected to have a new chassis with semiactive suspension and cornering ABS, and debut around the 20th anniversary of the arrival of the original 1340cc iteration, which went on sale in 1999. Suzuki made an unusually low-key showing at last autumn’s motorcycle exhibitions, with no new models expect the SV650X, a restyled version of the existing SV650. It followed a major Suzuki launch in 2018, of the new GSXR1000. Without more model debuts soon, it won’t just mean fewer new bikes from

Suzuki but a smaller line-up altogether. Several high-performance models, notably the GSX-R600, GSX-R750 and Hayabusa, have yet to be updated to meet emission limits that were introduced for new models at the beginning of 2017. All three remain listed on Suzuki’s UK website but sales will be from existing stock. Suzuki sources in the UK have long maintained that the Japanese factory would not allow such a brand-defining model as the Hayabusa to go to the wall, making a replacement a certainty. As long ago as 2015, Suzuki hinted that a new Hayabusa could be in the pipeline with the unveiling of the weirdlooking ‘Concept GSX’ pictured here. A capacity hike would take Suzuki in the opposite direction to Kawasaki, which has squeazed 200hp out of 1000cc by supercharging its latest sports-tourer, the just launched Ninja H2 SX.

Getting to it A Wrench in the Works

By David Heron Ok, so we have the “new” yet very old Honda home and it’s time to get down to it. It is always a quandary as to where to start when I am confronted with a seemingly impossible path to having a nice looking and rideable bike. Case in point is this 1964 Honda 305 Super Hawk that I had the demented idea to restore to its former glory. I told you before that my older brother had purchased one new in 1966 and my younger brother still has that bike. I am trying my best to recapture bits of my distant past and decided that this bike would be a good way to do just that. This thing has been sitting in a barn for way too many years but, in truth, is not really in bad shape. We are missing a seat, the air filters and the shift mechanism. Of course, I thought that those minor things were not too much to find and replace. One major problem is that I have been specializing in Kawasaki Triples for so long that I have a fairly wide number of sources to go to for parts. Hondas, not so much. So, it is necessary to spend hours searching the web for old Honda specialists where I can get parts. I did find a couple good sources in the US and, of course, there is always the sometimes evil ebay where people with rare parts prey on unsuspecting marks like me. So, I played on the computer for as long as possible compiling a list of what I thought I would need and finding sources for the list. I couldn’t avoid it any longer and went into the shop to

start. Of course, my memory is a little on the weak side but I convinced myself that I could remember most of the stuff on this kind of bike that I last worked on about 47 years ago. What problem could happen? My mind is still sharp as a tack. I got at it and stripped off the headlight, forks, wheels electrics and wiring harness. I have to say that most of the stuff was in reasonably good shape considering the history of it being hidden in a barn for years. I took a few pictures to finely hone my sharp-as-a-tack memory and bagged and marked parts from each section I took apart. Not that I needed that but, better safe than sorry. I was left with a kind of chameleon type frame. On top was a really crappy blue spray job. Underneath that was a black layer of paint. Underneath that was a green layer of paint and finally, under that was the original Honda crimson red. There was enough paint layers to add close to 20 pounds to the overall weight. Now, I can’t really blame any of the former owners for these different paints. Back in the day, no one knew or even dreamed that people would want original ‘60s motorcycles. They were a dime a dozen. Everyone wanted to customize their bike to make it stand out from the others. My older brother was a firm believer in chrome so our original Hawk, which my younger brother won’t surrender thus bringing about this latest project, had a chrome gas tank, fenders, body side covers, headlight and swingarm. Very shiny. Since they are not on the bike now when I go to visit it, I would guess that my younger bro is hoarding them somewhere in his garage. I must also admit that since we are being honest here that I

painted the old bike’s frame and forks in a very sexy purple metalflake finish and did the engine in black. The coolest, if I say so myself. Younger bro must have had fun getting that paint off. Not that I’m vindictive but, it serves him right to not let me have that bike anyway. It was Christmas and I was off the whole time from a little before Christmas until after New Year so I got out the sandblaster, taped off some parts of the frame and moved outside in the driveway to blast away the aforementioned 4 layers of paint. We are lucky enough to have 2 driveways, one in front and one in back. We park in the one at the back so the front is open. We keep the front one clear so my Wife, LSW can go out for her walks. It also seems to be a great place for strangers to pull in to turn around. In summer, they don’t even bother turning in and backing out, they just drive over the yard and pull a U turn around the big oak tree. I won’t get in to what I think of this. I promised to keep my blood pressure down. Anyway, the LSW doesn’t like sand on her pristine snow so I have to put down a tarp to collect the sand that I have blasted out. She won’t accept the obvious advantage that no one will slip in her driveway with all that sand down. I must admit that this is a pretty good idea because I can pour the sand back into the bag from the tarp and use it again. A penny saved,… I promised not to get back to using all those dumb clichés. But, besides being cold, it went very well. The frame was reasonably smooth and it sure beats the heck out of hand sanding. I have mentioned that the LSW can smell chemicals from a good 12 to 14

miles away so there was no way I was going to be allowed to paint the frame in my shop. I had taken a headlight tab to Canadian Tire and gone over the colour match auto paint section. I found a decent match so was armed with spray paint and the home painter’s secret weapon, filler primer. This stuff goes on thick and covers up wavy parts that guys like me are too lazy to hand sand. This stuff works, believe me. My friend who owns the local garage got my next call. He doesn’t work on the weekend so I am free to go in and stink his shop up with my paint. I put down a drop sheet and have the weekend to create my masterpiece. You have to be really happy with the new spray paint too. Put down a thin coat, wait 10 minutes and put down another one. I had the primer done in the first afternoon and the red the next day early. Then I had to bring the whole business home and then back to the shop again because I had missed a couple spots. All in all, it looks good. I did the fork lowers, headlight ears and front fork covers in the same way the next weekend. It certainly is red. Now I have to bring up a bottle of Thank you rye and the LSW says to say it is from her for saving her having to smell the paint in her house for days after. Since I am being so darn honest, I will give a little advice. It is better to look at the parts drawings to see how something goes together, or comes apart rather than hacking away. I got the forks apart. One took some coaxing with a hammer, gently coaxing though and went about taking out the fork seals . There was a lot of goop in there and I tried tapping out the seal with no results. I pounded

and cursed and pounded some more. I finally gave up on the first one and went to the second one instead. This one did not contain so much goop and I saw the seal retainer clip. I sprung it out and the seal was easily tapped out. After kicking myself a few times, I managed to get the completely mangled clip out of the one I had pounded on for an hour and that seal popped right out too. Now I am looking for one of these clips which seem about as rare as hen’s teeth. I have one from a Kawasaki which I am sure I can get in place but remember, look at what you are going at first and save yourself hours of cursing followed by a period of self loathing. Here I am with a painted frame, forks apart and not too much to do. I ordered some parts for the engine from Honda restoration site who specializes in these 305 Hondas. I went to ebay and ordered fork seals. Unfortunately, I was paying more attention to the price and not enough to where they were coming from. The fork seals are coming by snail mail from Poland. I am almost ready to bite the bullet and buy others from somewhere close, like Australia. So I can get to work on the forks. I still have all the fork parts lying on the floor. As usual, I thought that they would only be there for a short time. I can’t wait to go looking for the little thing that I have likely kicked across the floor in the dark in the time I have been waiting. I also thought that a new wiring harness would be a great idea. It was mainly because it seemed to disintegrate whenever I touched it and it took super-human strength to pull apart some of the connectors. Of course, this is coming from Taiwan on a slow boat. When I have ordered Kawasaki parts from Taiwan before, they actually arrived in a shorter time than many shipments from the US. But not this time. When I trace the shipment, I get reports like, “ shipped”, “Loaded on a container”, “loaded on vessel”. Two months delivery is guaranteed. No wonder they were cheap. I will start working on the engine soon. I have ordered a piston set and a gasket set. I found points, and a condenser and clutch plates. The crankshaft is in good shape with no play in the connecting rods. There are no funny noises when I spin it. The tappets and their individual shafts came in a bag on top of the engine. There is no play in them on their shafts so I put them in. The valves seem to sit nicely. I have cleaned the combustion chambers and everything is a go when the pistons come and my machine shop guy has bored the cylinders. It would be nice just once to find that one of my engines does not have to be re-bored. I feel that I am making somebody at Wiseco a rich man. So now, it’s hurry up and wait while parts are being shipped. I do have some work to do on my Kawasakis too but right now I am too excited about the Honda. This is much to the chagrin of my Kawasaki friends who have labelled me a turn coat. Oh yeah, I went to a little Astorville Trippers’ get together over the Holidays. The Harley guys are all over me about 3 different brands now. Triumph, Kawasaki and now Honda.. Lots of fuel for ridicule. Good fun... I guess that I am cannon fodder for them.

not the actual man in the story

It had been a long day, quite cold with only a smattering of sun to warm us. I had been so cold when we left in the morning that, at our first gas stop, I bought the thickest newspaper I could find and stuffed it down the front of my jacket to block the wind and provide a bit of insulation. Now that the ‘vacation’ part of our motorcycle trip was over, my husband and my girlfriend, Kat, and I were putting in long days to get back home. It was around 2:30 in the afternoon when we finally stopped for lunch. Tens of miles of highway billboards had been advertising Wayne’s Family Restaurant in Oconto, Wisconsin. We almost felt obliged to eat there just to help defray the cost of those road signs. We pulled into the parking lot — mostly empty due to the hour. Inside the restaurant we were seated quickly and settled into a booth by the window. Ordering our first course was not difficult; the restaurant offered regular fare. What posed a challenge was dessert; choosing among 36 award-winning homemade pies. So good were those pies, the baker had beaten 3000 other contestants and had been awarded Blue Ribbons by the American Pie Council seven times. There was no mistaking those pies. They were melt-in-our-mouths delicious. Apple, blueberry, cherry, chocolate, coconut cream, key lime, lemon, peach, raspberry, strawberry; some with custard layers, some without; pastry crusts, graham crusts; plain tops, and streusel tops. But the luscious taste of those pies was no match for that godawful, synthetic, unnaturally white glop shimmering atop each slice. Directing the waitress’s attention to the blob on my piece of pie, I whispered, “What the hell?” “I know,” she groaned, rolling her eyes. “The new owner’s trying to save money.” “But,” I stated the obvious, “Wisconsin is America’s Dairyland State not the Land of Edible Oil Product .” “I know,” she repeated. “I’m going to write a letter to Wisconsin’s Dairy Council.” “Please do,” she begged. “We hate that stuff and are embarrassed about serving it.” “What an insult to the baker of these

pies!” I continued. “I know,” came her long-suffering refrain. My husband is not what you would call a gourmet, in fact, he has no interest in food. He ate his pie — white stuff and all. Kat and I did our best to scrape off the white gunk and devoured what really was amazing pie. When we finished, we did our usual after-meal routine: checked our phones, visited the washrooms and did a final visual sweep to ensure we had all our stuff. My husband went outside to take a look at the sky and get a sense of the weather. He does that. Just before the cheque is scheduled to arrive, he sidles over to the washroom and then heads directly outside assuming I’m going to pay his bill. I always do. He always checks the oil and tire pressure on my bike. I guess it’s a fair trade. I was standing by the cash register, fishing through my pockets for a few more coins to pay our bill. I had on my leather jacket and boots; my tank bag was on the floor kicking around my feet. Standing next to the counter — appearing to be more of a fixture than a customer — was an old man. He was wearing faded jeans, scuffed boots and a threadbare, brown plaid jacket. His creviced face and hands were tanned brown. Farmer, I thought. I used to play the organ at a church in a small town located in a farming community. I took this man for one of those old guys — ‘worn’ but not ‘out’ — that sat in the back row of every funeral in town whether he knew the deceased or not — just for the egg salad sandwiches and icebox pickles. “Well, there, young lady,” he said, “you and your husband ridin’ a motorcycle?” I usually bristle at this suggestion; good grief — it’s 2015. I am still amazed at the number of times people — both men and women — comment on me riding a bike. ‘Wow. Girls ride motorcycles?’ or ‘Your husband lets you ride a motorcycle?’ or — this is the worst — ‘Aren’t you a good wife — washing your husband’s motorcycle?’ This time, for some reason, I grinned. “Actually,” I said, “I ride my own bike.” “Oh, good for you,” he chuckled softly. “Used to ride myself.” After more than two decades in the counselling business, I recognize that look people have when they’re about to tell me their life stories, but I’m a sucker for sweet old men, so I smiled and said, “Oh, yeah?” He nodded his head. “Grew up real poor. But I always knew there was a

big world out there and I wanted to see some of it. Me and my younger brother, Danny, and my buddy, Mac – we found this frame of a motorbike in a shed and spent a few months juryriggin’ it together.” “Kept you off the streets and out of trouble?” I kidded. “Oh, not much trouble to get into ‘round these parts”. “Everybody was real poor. But that motorbike gave us the adventure bug. We decided we wanted to go somewhere, so we saved up a bit of money and thought we’d take a train out west. Boy, did we get a big surprise when we seen how much the train was gonna cost. We couldn’t of saved that much money in a month of Sundays. But we did get away.” “How? Not on that bike?” “No,” he grinned impishly. “We stole a truck.” “You what?” “We stole a truck. Mac’d been doin’ a bit of work for the old farmer down the road when the old guy got sick and had to go to the hospital in the city. Mac knew the old guy had a pick-up in the barn and we figgered he wouldn’t be usin’ it for a while. So we grabbed a few clothes, snuck some food and hoofed it down to the old man’s barn. It was November, November 1959. It was real cold — way below zero.” “November?” I snorted. “Uh...not the best travellin’ weather, but it’s when we could get the truck.” I shrugged. “When we left, we were headin’ for New Mexico.” “New Mexico? Kind of ambitious for a first trip.” “Ya... but Mac really wanted to go there.” He stopped speaking and frowned slightly. “Uh huh,” I said quietly. “Well... Mac’s brother... really... Mac’s daddy was... a bit...” he hesitated again and looked down at the wooden floor. He stood quietly, then cleared his throat and began again. “Mac’s daddy was a bit of a drinker. Real bad temper too. I think he may’ve went after Mac’s older brother once too often. Lester – that’s Mac’s older brother — he and his daddy got into it one Saturday afternoon. Next thing Mac seen was Lester hightailin’ it down the road. Mac said they figgered he’d be back by the next morning, but Lester never showed. Bit of a sorry thing for his family, but no one blamed Lester. That boy couldn’t do nothin’ right as far as his daddy was concerned. Left the other kids alone

19 – The Motorcycle Times, March 2018

but he never let up on Lester. Even Mac didn’t know why.” “That family stuff can be pretty tough sometimes,” I offered. “Yep, ya it can. Anyways one Sunday mornin’ when their daddy was in the barn, doesn’t Mac’s momma get a telephone call from Lester. Said he missed everyone but wouldn’t be comin’ back. Said he was followin’ the rodeo circuit and doin’ pretty good”. “So Mac knew Lester was gonna be in New Mexico with the rodeo ‘round the middle of November. When the old farmer got sick, Mac decided to use his pick-up to drive down to New Mexico. He missed his brother somethin’ fierce. Told us he was goin’ whether we went with him or not.” “You had to go,” I stated. He nodded and smiled, “Yep... ya we did. Not much of a heater in that truck, as I recall, but we managed to keep our feet from freezin’. I was 17, Mac was 16 and my brother, Danny, was 15.” “So you were the only one with a driver’s licence,” I said. He snorted. “None of us had drivers’ licences! We all lived on farms. We’d been drivin’ tractors and trucks since our feet could touch the pedals, but none of us had licences. And besides we were drivin’ a stolen truck. We had to stay on the back roads anyways.” I shook my head and laughed. He told me about a couple of their adventures and then turned serious. “We were small town boys out on a big adventure. Things changed after that trip. Mac dropped out of school and disappeared a few months after we got back. Never seen him again. Years later I heard he’d been found hangin’ in a tree”. “My brother, Danny... well... we lost him in Vietnam. The kicker was – he volunteered. My folks kinda died then, too. Real tough losin’ your youngest son. Makes you wonder what the Lord’s thinkin’. Never figgered that one out”. “And me? I stayed right here. Never moved. Never married.” His eyes drifted off to those memories. When they refocused, he continued, “We were in Kansas in 1959. November ‘59. Near Holcomb.” He paused long enough to make me think he was trying to tell me something. And he had a slightly expectant look on his face. I knew I would only have been five years old in 1959 and . . . and then I felt a little flutter in my brain. “Are you talking about TrumanCapote’s-In-Cold-Blood Holcomb, Kansas?” I asked. He nodded his head slowly. “Yep. November 15, 1959.” “Oh, my god.” “We were there,” he said softly. “In Holcomb?” “No,” he said. “There.” Looking back, I know there were a few other customers in the restaurant that afternoon. I also know Kat was paying for her meal. And one of the wait staff would have been using the cash register, so it could not have been as quiet as I imagine it now. But at the moment, I felt like the world suddenly went still. No noise; no movement; nothing. Nothing except the ticking of the big clock on the wall. “There.” I repeated quietly. “Yep. continued on PG. 20

We were drivin’ by the Clutter farm when... well... when those poor folks... we heard a bang and saw a flash of light in the upstairs windows, but... we didn’t know what had happened until we heard about the murders the next day. But, yep... that’s where we were.” I was stunned. “As I recall from the book and the movie, it took a while for the police to get any leads. You didn’t report what you saw?” “We couldn’t,” he reminded me. “None of us had licences and we were drivin’ a stolen truck. We were afraid we’d get thrown in jail. We heard a few people reported seein’ a strange truck thereabouts, so we figgered they’d think we’d killed the family.” “Hmmm. I do remember the book mentioned a couple of people had seen an unfamiliar vehicle - but it didn’t turn out to be the stolen car Dick Hickock and Perry Smith had been driving”. “But... the murders happened in the middle of the night. What were you doing driving around then?” “It was Mac,” he said. “We only had a day or so to catch up with Lester. And we’d had a bit of engine trouble when we were drivin’ through Missouri. We’d lost a day’s drive. Mac was gettin’ real uneasy. It was the end of the rodeo season and he was afraid if we missed Lester in New Mexico, he’d never see him again.” “And Lester didn’t know you were coming,” I said slowly. “That’s right. He only called home when he could find a telephone booth. And it had to be on a Sunday morning when his momma was at home and his daddy was in the barn. Mac couldn’t telephone Lester to let him know he was comin’. We had to fill up the gas tank and jerrycans so we could drive all night. And we ended up drivin’... “ “Right past the Clutter farm,” I said. “Yep.” We stood quietly in the lobby. “It pained me for a long time,” he said. “I thought about them poor folks for years. Even if we’d known what was goin’ on, I don’t figger we coulda done nothin’ — probably woulda got ourselves killed, but...” There wasn’t much else to say. And as is the nature of our marital dance, my husband came back into the restaurant at that moment knowing he’d find me talking with someone. He was anxious to get moving; he said it looked like a cloud bank was rolling in. I offered my hand to the old man and thanked him. “Holcomb, Kansas,” I said. “There,” was all he said.

Loyalty Doesn’t Exist By Mark Canton What’s black and white and black and white and black and blue all over? Answer: a nun falling down the stairs. This joke had us groaning as elementary school kids way back when. Looking at the situation as “adults,” we might see something different. This “joke” is about the risk of falling down, and the results. We play with risk, or should I say, with risk assessment, every time that we ride. In order to ride a motorcycle on public roads, we are required by law to purchase a minimum amount of insurance to cover us financially if we cause an incident that harms someone else, or their property. Most of us mutter, when having to pay for insurance, and wonder how the insurance companies are “allowed” to charge so much. We all say the same thing, “It’s too [insert expletive) expensive.” What is insurance, and how can we keep those costs down? Home and auto insurance is known in the industry as “general” insurance, and it is sold by insurance companies that specialize in those products. There are other kinds of insurance companies, such as “life companies, but those companies sell different products and are governed under different rules and regulations. The difference between insurers is similar to the differences between your local car and tractor manufacturers. Both make vehicles that have wheels, and a drivetrain, but both are for different uses and for different markets. On-road motorcycles are required to be insured using policies sold by general insurers in provinces such as Ontario, and distributed by government-registered “general” insurance agents. Some provinces, such as B.C., have government-administered insurance programs. Insurance is set up to provide “financial” protection to the rider and to the owner of a vehicle. Insurance is used to offset your financial risk only. However, it is only one method of mitigating risk, especially the risk of riding. Other methods are refraining from stunting, taking training when learning to ride, and refresher courses later, riding on good rubber, riding with proper riding gear, and always riding totally aware (no drugs or alcohol, get lots of sleep, and ride without distractions). These are ways to mitigate risks that we riders can choose to take. Some riders take risks because they think that they are “allowed” to do so, or because they are “not required” by law to do otherwise. In the parlance, they are not “risk adverse.” Years ago, one could ride in Ontario without insurance, subject to paying $25.00 at the license bureau for that choice. Today, riding without insurance will cost a fine of a minimum of $6,250 including the surcharge. The only option is to only ride off-road, on private land,

where you have permission to do so. Generally, riding on private property is not covered under the Highway Traffic Act, and proof of insurance is, therefore, not required. Why do we pay so much in insurance premiums? Well, the truth of the matter, in my opinion, is this. We are required by law to purchase insurance to protect others. End of story. There are no rules stating that the insurance has to be affordable, or even made available. Witness what happened a few years ago when Ontario insurers took a stand (since rescinded) that they would not insure any bike over 25 years old. There is a rule that says we have to purchase insurance. However, where are the rules restricting insurer retention levels, or profit levels? Insurance companies are in the business to make a profit, or as Nobel prize-winning economist Milton Friedman once said, and I paraphrase, ‘The only purpose of a business is to maximize profits to shareholders.’ So, for the business of insurance, its purpose is to make as much money as possible by whatever methods are allowed by law. An insurer’s profit is often stated as a percentage of the premium dollar; the higher the premium, the higher the profit. That being said, and on the other hand, there is no way of guaranteeing that an insurance company will actually make a profit, and hence can stay in that line of business. Insurers are not required to offer policies for motorcycles, and they will not, if they do not think that they can make “sufficient” profit on doing so. Insurer “retention” is a fancy insurance lingo word meaning the portion of your premium dollar that is used to pay for administration, claims payment, taxes, contingency/profit charges, commissions, and required reserves. If rules or laws are lacking that state what insurers can charge for each portion of the retention (other than taxes), then the incentive is lost for the insurer to keep these charges to a minimum. Are there requirements for insurers to keep accurate data on types of incidents (so ATV incidents can be grouped in with powered two-wheeler incidents), to keep claims payment and administration charges to a certain percentage, or to provide proof, not otherwise hidden in reserve funds, that actual claim payouts have risen? Hmmm …. Where are the rules requiring insurers to investigate insurance scammers? According to a report by KPMG for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, , people in Ontario pay 5% of their disposable income, on average, on auto insurance, and 18% of that is to pay for fraud. Whose job

is it to crack down? The police, the insurance industry, or is it our job as riders and drivers? Do we need incentives to uphold the laws against fraud? Reduce Your Premiums Of course there are ways to reduce insurance premiums. Each method of reducing premium means taking on a bit more of the risk yourself. 1. Ask for the highest deductible possible; perhaps going from $500 to $1,000 or even $1,500 per incident – meaning that you are responsible for that amount of the claim. 2. Consider dropping some of the coverage on your older model bikes. Does a bike worth $2,500 warrant having collision insurance (that pays out if you damage the bike yourself), or fire and theft coverage, or the mostly all-inclusive “allperils” coverage. 3. Buy an older model bike on which to learn. It’s almost a guarantee that your bike will fall over in some manner during your first year or two of riding and used replacement parts are a lot less than new parts. 4. Install engine and fairing guards. 5. Ride within your abilities. 6. Take rider training and refresher courses; some insurers give you a break on prices if you take approved courses. 7. Don’t go fast where you don’t know. 8. Smaller displacement bikes are less costly to repair and insure. 9. Use bike locks, antitheft alarms and GPS tracking units. 10. Ride ‘naked’ bikes – plastic bodywork is expensive to replace and insure. 11. Check insurance rates and availability before you purchase; some companies will not insure certain makes and models of due to their claims history. 12. Shop for insurance every two years at a minimum; forget loyalty – it is non-existent. Talking about insurance is one of the surest ways that I know to drive people away from you at any type of party. Governments also shy away from the topic at every opportunity. It’s really because the subject is complex, has its own accounting rules and regulations, and its own jargon. I would like to see much more clarity provided on this subject by both the industry, and by the government. I don’t mind seeing companies make a profit so that they can continue to stay in business and to provide a necessary service, but like the nun falling down the stairs, I want to make sure that my risks are known, and that I don’t end up black and blue financially from paying too much in premiums at the beginning, or at the end, of my ride.
