The World’s First 3DPrinted Motorcycle

AP Works, a German Airbus subsidiary, has come out with the first 3D-printed, small, electric motorcycle. The name of the model is the Light Rider. Many people would refer to it as a “motorized bicycle,” as it certainly looks like. That being said, the early, pre-1910 motorcycle manufacturers took bicycles and added engines to them. Unlike these early-era “motorcycles,” the Light Rider doesn’t have pedals, so I’ll opt to use the classification of a “motorcycle.” The hollow exoskeleton frame is based on natural structures and growth patterns. The frame is made Scalmalloy, which is a corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy and is touted as stronger than titanium. These two items make the frame very light at around 13 pounds. The motorcycle’s total weight is 77 pounds. AP Works used a six kilowatt electric motor. With the motorcycle being so light, this engine enables the motorcycle to run at a top speed of 50 mph. The 3D motorcycles are in production batches of 50. The price is $56,000, which is high, but “firsts” are often expensive. Let us know what you think.

Harley-Davidson Annouces Big News

From the LiveWire to a new ADV bike to small-displacement mills for emerging Asian markets, Harley seems to have finally figured out a new way forward Guys! GUYS! We just got some major news from Harley-Davidson that you all need to hear. We’ve been hearing rumors out of Milwaukee for a while now about a huge announcement from the Motor Company regarding its future. In an effort to get more people riding globally—on Harleys, coincidentally— and to make some lemonade out of the lemons it’s been handed recently, the MoCo has unveiled a plan called, “More Roads to Harley Davidson.” “The bold actions we are announcing

today leverage Harley-Davidson’s vast capabilities and competitive firepower— our excellence in product development and manufacturing, the global appeal of the brand and of course, our great dealer network,” said Harley’s president and CEO Matt Levatich. “Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding.” That’s some bold talk boss man, but what does it mean? Well, for starters, it means a pretty dramatic re-imagining of the Harley brand as a global force with a seriously deep product selection selling bikes that people actually want in

other markets rather than trying to sell heavy, big bore American-style cruisers to people in Thailand and Vietnam. How do they plan to do that? Check this out, straight from Harley’s press release. • Extending the company’s leadership in heavyweight motorcycles by continuing to develop improved, more technologically-advanced Touring and Cruiser motorcycles that will keep existing Harley-Davidson riders engaged and riding longer. • Introducing a new modular 500cc to 1250cc middleweight platform of motorcycles that spans three distinct product spaces and four displacements, starting continued on PG. 03 with the

thing! It’s like a Road Glide and an Africa Twin had a baby. An adorable baby! All we know about it is that it’ll have a new 1250cc mill and has a release date of 2020. Hopefully it’ll be light and sturdy enough to be an actual ADV bike and not just a poser, but I, for one, have high hopes about this thing. Remember Buell? I do, and with a lot more fondness than I reckon most people do. Looks like someone in Milwaukee remembers Buell too by the looks of this thing. It doesn’t have a name yet, but it looks like it has the 1250cc engine in it and Harley says it’ll hit the streets in 2020? Cool? Maybe. Hopefully. So there, that’s the big announcement. It really is Therapy Well, a few years back I was having some health issues, that were very concerning to my wife. She dragged me in to the doctors office, almost kicking and screaming. It turned out that my blood pressure was 180 something over 120 something, which is to say I was one McDonald’s french fry away from a massive heart attack. My doctor prescribed me blood pressure pills, which I have been taking now for a few years. Every three months I have to go in for a check up. Every time I go, my blood pressure is in the high 140 something and I always get that look. Anyway I found out that like a lot of people I have what is referred to as ‘White Coat Syndrome’. What that means is that my blood pressure is always elevated when I get it checked by my doctor because I’m nervous or anxious that it is going to be high and I will inevitably get that look. So all last year my blood pressure was really high. No matter what I did, it was up there and now I’m getting that look from my wife. You know the one, the one that

says your eating carrots, broccoli and other good stuff from now on. No more steak, no more coffee, no more salt, no more food with any real flavour. So for a while I was trying to eat a lot healthier but it wasn’t making a real difference even with exercise. A few months passed and I did my usual trek to the doctors office just befor summer, same thing as before, blood pressure way too high. This time I was a pissed off, stressed out and needed to just really shake off the week from hell that I had been having. So I decided to try another strategy. Ride my motorcycle as much as possible this summer. So now at least once a week I hop on my motorcycle and take off to be with my bike, and the open road. I will sometimes ride with friends but for the most part just riding alone. It gives me the time shake off the daily stress. I get to enjoy the ride, the road, nature and just plain be with my own thoughts. I really don’t have any place in mind that I need to go, it’s just where ever I end up and how ever

long it takes. My wife used to get concerned because I would go riding whenever we had an argument or I or she was pissed off for what ever silly reason. Now that my grand daughter is around more often, my wife doesn’t complain as much cause she has her to dote on. So it has been a few months since I was last at the doctors and it was that time again. I went in and the first thing in order was take my blood pressure. Well, didn’t I almost fall off the examination table when he told me 125 over what ever it was. It was well within the normal parameters. Woo Hoo. I went home with a smile this time, grinning from ear to ear. My wife looked at me and asked the usual question, “so what was it this time”. When I told her she almost fell over. My next words to her were, “I’m going for a motorcycle ride.” This time no crazy eyes or concerned look. All she said was enjoy your ride dear, see ya when you get home, Love you.

What Moves Your Soul?

August 2018, The Motorcycle Times – 6

chatterbox Soda, Motorcycle Prices Rise as Tariffs Hit Home for Consumers U.S. manufacturers are charging more to cope with rising steel, aluminum costs Consumers are starting to see higher prices for recreational vehicles, soda, beer and other goods that now cost more to make as a result of recent tariffs on metals and parts. When costs rise, manufacturers generally must chose whether to absorb bigger bills for aluminum, steel and imported components, or pass the increases along to customers. Many manufacturers in recent days, including Coca-Cola Co. and Polaris Industries Inc., have said they plan to raise prices. U.S. steel and aluminum prices are up 33% and 11%, respectively, since the start of the year, as producers and their customers begin to price in the tariffs that the Trump administration first applied on foreign-made metal in March. Tariffs on a host of additional imported products from China this month have added costs for companies that use those components to assemble their products in the U.S. “We’ve had to go to the market a bit more frequently and a bit more aggressively with some price increases as of late,” said Michael Happe, chief executive of recreational-vehicle manufacturer Winnebago Industries Inc. Winnebago wouldn’t say how much it has raised prices, and said it has made changes such as modifying RV floor plans to trim costs. The Forest City, Iowa-based company has benefited from a surge in RV sales in recent years, driven by demand from younger customers, and is spending at least $25 million to expand production. But Mr. Happe said the tariffs, broader trade tensions and rising inflation are clouding the outlook for Winnebago. “Uncertainty is never a great thing for the economy and the more noise there is there’s a risk that consumers will press pause,” he said. U.S. manufacturers have been on a tear. Factory output is up 22% since a recession low in June 2009. Industrial stocks have climbed this month as companies including 3M Co. and Honeywell International Inc. reported higher-than-expected sales and profits. Some of those companies said tariffs were less of a concern than rising labor and shipping costs, and that they would make production changes before raising prices. But other executives and investors fear rising costs as a result of the tariffs could sap customer demand and crimp profits. And some companies say they believe a strong economy will support higher prices. “We haven’t seen any pushback on the price,” Todd Bluedorn, chief exec-

utive of heating-and-cooling-systems maker Lennox International Inc., said on an investor call last week. “We’ve seen all our competitors announce similar price increases.” Consumer prices rose 2.9% in June from a year earlier, the Labor Department said, the highest rate in more than six years. Producer prices, a measure of what businesses are paid for goods and services, have also climbed to the highest level in years. The producer-price index rose 3.4% in June from a year earlier as energy and shipping costs climbed along with metal prices. Polaris is raising prices on its boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles to cover $15 million of the $40 million in tariff-related costs the Minnesota-based manufacturer expects to pay for foreign-made steel, aluminum and components from China this year. Polaris is also facing retaliatory tariffs from other countries on products it exports from the U.S., including the Indian-brand motorcycles it ships to Europe. Chief Executive Scott Wine said Polaris would accelerate plans to move production of motorcycles that it sells in Europe to Poland from Iowa to avoid rising European Union tariffs on U.S. motorcycles. Harley-Davidson Inc. announced a similar plan in June, drawing condemnation from unions representing its U.S. workers and from President Trump. Mr. Trump said Harley was undermining its Made-InAmerica legacy. Harley’s Chief Executive Matt Levatich last Tuesday said the move would keep down the cost of its motorcycles in Europe. “We made the best decision given the circumstances,” he said. Tariff costs are starting to hit consumers at the grocery store as well. Coke on Wednesday said it was taking the unusual step of raising soda prices midyear in North America because of rising costs, including freight rates as well as prices for plastic and aluminum. Executives at Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co. said they would raise prices up to 2% in the second half of the year. “At some point, increased commodity costs have to be passed through to some extent,” Chief Executive Jim Koch said on an earnings call Thursday. Manufacturers have some room to increase prices as the U.S. economy continues to grow at a robust pace, driven by strong consumer spending and exports. Gross domestic product rose at a 4.1% rate in the second quarter, the Commerce Department said Friday.

Royal Enfield updates its classic motorcycles

Royal Enfield, one of the original motorcycle brands, revitalized an iconic single-cylinder bike this year. The 2018 Royal Enfield Classic 500 descends from a 239cc motorcycle first sold in 1901. It’s not accurate to refer to the Classic 500 as “retro,” because the bike hasn’t changed all that much since its introduction for the Indian market in 2010 and even then many features continued from other, earlier models. The significant changes with the new Classic 500s are standard rear disc brakes, a dual channel antilock-braking system (ABS), a passenger pillion, and new color options. The Royal Enfield Classic 500’s air cleaner cover, toolbox, and tail light design are carryovers from previous models. Rider comfort features with historic origins include a single person saddle seat with springs, mudguards to keep riders relatively dry, and thigh pads on the back sides of the fuel tank. Purists will appreciate the standard kickstart lever on the right side of the bike, but the Classic 500 also includes an electric starter. The 2018 Classic 500 is available in seven color choices, with otherwise identical mechanical features. Note that the images in this article do not show the pillion passenger seat — no photography

was available with the seat in place. Also, the technical specifications for some of the Classic 500 color options on the Royal Enfield website had not yet been updated with the new features. All 2018 Classic 500s get their power from a 499cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that favors torque over horsepower. Royal Enfield rates the Classic 500 engine at 27.2 horsepower and 30.5 poundfeet of torque. The engine has electronic ignition and fuel injection, a five-speed transmission, and both electric and kick start. Royal Enfield’s best selling bike has telescopic front forks and twin gascharged, adjustable rear shocks. Two-piston disc brakes and a front drum brake take care of stopping the 18-inch rear and 19-inch front spoked wheels assisted by the new ABS. The bike has a relatively short 53.5inch wheelbase and a 429-pound curb weight — meaning fueled and ready to go. The narrow seat measures 31 inches from the ground unladen and sinks to 29 inches with average-weight riders, which means most people will have little problem reaching the ground with both feet at a stop.

Toronto Considers Legalizing Lane Filtering for Motorcycles at Stoplights It’s not the same as lane-splitting at speed—but it can be just as good for traffic flow and rider safety. The largest city in Canada could become a slightly safer place for motorcyclists in the near future, as the Toronto city council has reportedly voted to examine the idea of legalizing lane filtering at stoplights, according to the CBC. Not to be confused with lanesplitting, lane filtering is where motorcycles are allowed to ride between cars stopped at a traffic light and travel all the way up to the stop line, then get a jump start when the light turns green. The idea has been pushed by motorcyclists in and around the heavily-trafficked city for years, and should the council vote on approving a proposed pilot program, lane filtering would soon be allowed on Richmond and Adelaide streets in downtown Toronto—two of the busiest streets in Toronto.

“Stuck in traffic on a motorcycle, it’s a pretty scary place,” Councilman Anthony Perruzza of Toronto’s Ward 8, who also brought the motion for the pilot program before the council, said to the CBC, “Especially when you look in your mirror and the person behind you is on their phone or completely distracted.” Getting the word out to Toronto motorists is an important part of the plan so they know what’s going on when they see motorcycles going between lanes. “There would have to be a bit of an educational campaign connected to that,” Perruzza said, “so that people in cars and people on bicycles and pedestrians understand what filtering is.” Lane filtering could be a step towards lane-splitting which isn’t currently legal anywhere in Canada. Lane-splitting is common in Europe and California recently became the first U.S. state to legalize the maneuver.

Chinese Inventor Develops Working Drone Motorcycle

+

For the past two years, a 40-yearold Chinese drone technician has been working on a flying motorcycle. A 40-year-old Chinese drone technician in the Guangdong province has been developing a flying motorcycle for the past two years and has already completed 1,564 test flights, according to The Sunday Times. Zhao Deli’s engineering skills have resulted in a manned aerial motorbike that can reach speeds up to 43 miles per hour, leaving comparable efforts in Russia and Dubai in the dust. Deli’s “Jindouyun,” which translates to “somersault cloud” and describes the Monkey King’s aerial feat in the Chinese novel, Journey to the West, has seen its fair share of disastrous iterations over the past couple of years. The very first test flight, for † instance, saw the drone’s batteries catch fire. A whole year later, another test flight concluded in a crash landing. Now, 1,546 test flights later, † Deli’s motorcycle drone seems to be thoroughly refined and ready for action; at least, Deli thinks so as he’s reportedly eager to take his creation on a 3,400-mile expedition along China’s Yellow River. The photographs above, courte‡ † sy of China Daily, seem to indicate †† that this vehicle is capable of cruis† †† ing along at an altitude of around † 10 to 15 feet. The drone’s 30-minute maximum use is likely Deli’s current focus if he ever wants to go on that aerial road trip without stopping to recharge the batteries once an hour. On the other hand, the Chinese engineer says this project isn’t just about personal satisfaction † or vanity, and that he hopes the Jin†† douyun will eventually see agricultural implementation such as aerial ©2018 Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. Your Next Motorcycle Just Might Be An Electric Bike

Many people are wondering why electric motorcycles aren’t more dominant. A large part of the explanation is from the Innovator’s Dilemma, Christensen and Raynor’s key work which is explanatory of so much in this rapidly evolving time. It is also possible that people are simply looking at the wrong segment of the market – at motorcycle manufacturers instead of electric bike manufacturers.

5

thing top of the line. Recently, manufacturers have been trying to bring millennials into the fold with naked bikes, but with limited success. Naked bikes are cheap, with a price point under $5,000 USD. At that price point, it is difficult for manufacturers such as Harley Davidson and BMW to make money on as their businesses are optimized for prices in the $20k+ range. Naked bikes have no fairings, simple seats, no luggage, etc. They have relatively small displacements of 500-650 cc which makes them well-suited for getting around town and short road trips. They have lower end components that make them suitable for two passenger riding only for short, occasional trips. Electric bicycles, on the other hand, are currently following the bottom slanting line on the Innovator’s Dilemma graph. They have evolved to the equivalent

utility of naked bikes about 80% of the time and they are far cheaper than naked bikes. When classified as an ebike, they typically having a lower purchase price and have no license or insurance requirements. They are restricted in speed by regulations in many geographies, but the restrictions still allow them to travel faster than the speed of bicycles and at or above the average speed of urban traffic. The naked bike market currently overlaps with the electric bicycle market and electric bicycles continue to evolve to greater and greater performance, with some offering the ability to switch off regulation mode for a little illicit fun. There are multiple vendors offering electric bikes capable of hitting 50 mph | 80 kph. That’s pretty fast for something that doesn’t require licenses or insurance, although these beasts are intended for off CONTINUED TO PG. 13 road use,

9 – The Motorcycle Times, August 2018

Motorcycles, in my argument, are represented on the top line of this graph. They have evolved to have anti-lock brakes, cruise control, stereos, cup holders, luggage for extended touring and a lot of bling at the top end. On the performance side of the equation, they have evolved to be incredibly fierce race machines that just happen to be street legal. Up in the hills, motorcycles are hypercompetent off-road machines with amazing amounts of horsepower and torque. My last motorcycle, a BMW F800ST, was able to go 0–60 in 3.5 seconds but was still comfortable enough for extended touring. At the time, it was hard to find a bike that wasn’t 1200 cc and well over 500 pounds or 230 kg. The bikes that most Europeans and North Americans have been buying are those top end bikes. When people are buying a motorcycle explicitly, they are expecting some-

Organizers estimate more than 200,000 came to town to enjoy the sunshine and to celebrate two-wheel freedom By Peter Bailey The wildly popular “Friday the 13th” event in Port Dover -- the first time it has occurred in a summer month since 2014 -- was a huge success that organizers say attracted more than 200,000 bikers and spectators to the tiny town of 6,100. The July weather was spectacular for the 55th event, now in its 37th year, and the streets were filled with motorbikes and pedestrians. Outsiders who did not live in town had to park their cars in a nearby field and come in by shuttle bus. But no one seemed to mind the slight inconvenience and the mood was one of quiet anticipation. Organizers reported no acts of violence and only few incidents of public intoxication. The irregular get-together (depending upon how many times Friday falls on the 13th during the year) was started by Chris Simons and a dozen or so companions in the former Commercial Ho-

tel, then known locally as “The Zoo.” It is now called Angelo’s, and owned by Louie De Bono, who also owns South Side Louie’s. “Years ago, when I was on the town’s board of trade we had 600 to 800 riders come to an event,” says Simons. “At the time I told them this could grow to 100,000, but they didn’t believe me. Some of them didn’t even want it.” But grow it did, through word of mouth, and organizers agree a town couldn’t nurture an event like this through any other means. Although attracting more than 200,000 on a beautiful July day is an accomplishment, Simons believes the number will settle down to a maximum of 150,000 in future, as bikers grow older and stop riding. Although the main event is only one day, many people come to the town and stay as long as a week. The hotels are full from Brantford to Hamilton and within the town. Some people who don’t like the noise and fumes from the thousands of exhausts leave town and rent out their homes. It’s easy to get $2,000 to $2,500 for a week’s accommodation. One veteran rider who did not attend this year is Scott MacDonald. “I’ve been a half-dozen times, but I don’t like big crowds,” he said during the week prior to the event. “When I went, it was to see the rides that people had and what they did to their machines. It’s now so commercialized that it takes the fun out of it for me. Once you’ve seen it, it’s done. It doesn’t change a lot.”

Dawn Beale Evans, a retired nurse who has lived in Port Dover with her husband for more than six years, says having so many visitors is no trouble, although “it sounds like a hive of bees. But you get used to it.” The craziest thing she has seen is a fellow the townsfolk call “Thong Man.” He rides around the streets wearing little more than a colourful thong. Unfortunately, this year Thong Man was involved in a traffic mishap and was injured. He sent his apologies and says he’ll do his best to be there next year. It is remarkable that a group of people so large, drinking and in search of a good time, is so peaceful. “It’s largely a well-behaved crowd,” says South Side Louie’s manager Tracy Gutcher. “People do drink. But public intoxication is a big no-no.” Port Dover’s economy depends heavily on the popularity of three big events in July: The Canada Day parade on the first of the month is the longest-running parade of its kind in Canada. The Friday the 13th gathering is the largest of its kind in the country. And the annual “Pottahawk Pissup” (Pottahawk 2018) attracts up to 10,000 boaters, who sail and motor to Pottahawk Island in Lake Erie and return the same evening to eat and party in town. As with the motorcyclists, sailors are heavily monitored by O.P.P. on the water to prevent abuse of alcohol. A heavy police presence helps to maintain order in Port Dover, says Norfolk O.P.P. Const. Ed Sanchuk. “It’s very

peaceful. People forge friendships and they keep coming back,” he says. “I’ve seen people drive here from Pennsylvania even in the winter,” he adds. “I’ve seen people come here from all over the world.” One of those people was Nikola Zrakic of Croatia. “When I heard about this, I just had to come here,” Zrakic said, while waiting to have some patches sewn on his jacket at the Harley-Davidson display area. “I have a fiancé who lives here in Ontario,” he said. “So now I want to stay here. But I also really want to go to Sturgis in August.” Visitors from a little closer were two couples who rode down from Joliette, Que. Anouchka Chayer, Francois Leclerc, Nancy Corbeil and Dan Sutton took a break from the hot streets to cool down on the beach, with its beautiful breeze. They played briefly in the water and then relaxed in the shade. Along the streets of the town were thousands of private bikes, many of them beautifully maintained and painted. Pedestrians along Main Street regularly stopped to laugh and photograph a small wooden Harley-Davidson rocking horse bike parked between some monster hogs. Up the street, the manufacturer had a display area beside Clare’s Harley-Davidson. In it, spectators could ride stationary bikes with their engines going full tilt. They could also grab a bite to eat from the barbecue, get their hair cut for free, buy patches and pins and hang out

with other Harley fans. That’s where I, a novice, got a burn on my right calf from sitting astride a bike that had been running for an hour or so. The skin is slowly healing, and I’ve learned my lesson. I also got a slight trim from barber Stephanie Al, who works at the Nite Owl barber shop in Etobicoke, Ont. Harley-Davidson dealer Randy Clare says he’s really happy with the huge turnout and the response he got from the crowd. “We hope to continue to have people coming here,” he says. “We’ve been doing this for 65 years now, and we have a nice group of people who come out.” His company has outlets in Port Dover, Fenwick, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and on

Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. It has sold Harley-Davidson since the mid-1970s. What keeps him going? “It’s a family tradition,” he says. “I keep going to see what will happen the next day.” Adam Veri of the town’s board of trade says the one-day event was a huge success, not only in terms of what it did for local business, but also for local service clubs and charities, funding events that will go on throughout the year. “We not only want people to come into town,” he says, “we want them to come back.” Maintaining the peace has been the key, he says. “The police aren’t looking for trouble, and the Hells Angels aren’t interested in trouble.” Veri adds the personalities of the town,

A woman rider waves goodbye as she starts up her pink Lowboy prior to heading home

and the event itself, have been key to the gathering’s success. “It’s the vibe of the town. We’re very tolerant. Very Canadian. We’ve even had transvestite conventions here,” he explains. “Nearly all the buildings downtown have landlords who live here. They’re committed to the town. They’re involved, and they care.” Because the various service clubs and local businesses all work together, and because knowledge of the event spread by word of mouth, the crowds that came every year grew gradually and any problems were solved as the years went along. There were no major surprises. And as a result of the money raised by the town, it has funds to spend on hockey, baseball, flower pots on the streets

and Sunday concerts in Powell Park. Other communities in the area have tried to launch their own annual attractions and have failed because they haven’t followed Port Dover’s model, he says. Others didn’t even try to emulate its success. “We’re looking forward to September 2019,” he says, referring to the next Friday the 13th. He points proudly to the sterling work the town’s clean-up crews did, beginning in the Saturday early morning hours. “They worked through the night, from 1 a.m.,” he says. “By Saturday noon, you would have no idea such a huge event had ever taken place. Everything was cleaned up and back to normal. “It was actually a little eerie.”

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

A Rose By Any Other Name

We had a group of friends over for dinner a couple of weekends ago and, as result of an article in one of our national newspapers, the topic of pornography came up. ‘Pornography’, as defined by Wikipedia, “is the representation of the human body form or human sexual behaviour with the goal of sexual arousal”. The idea of consenting adults engaging in pornography met with varying degrees of acceptance in our group. However the article in question was about child pornography, so the discussion was quite short. No one at our table supported the exploitation of children. And although, for many people, there is nothing humorous about the idea of pornography, it did remind me of an amusing incident in our household. ‘My Beloved’ and I purchased our first computer, a VIC20, sometime in the late 1980s. We thought we were very clever naming it ‘Hal’. (HAL 9000 – Heuristically programmed ALgorithm computer - was a fictional character and the primary antagonist in Arthur C. Clark’s novel, Space Odyssey. By the 1990s – with a Commodore 64 and more in our household - we were excited about connecting to the worldwide web. We lived in a more rural part of Lambton County, so we had very few options for accessing the internet. In fact, we only had one. Dial-up. This was not because it was the only option we could afford; it was the only option available. After a couple of years of envying our in-town friends who had hi-speed, even lo-speed access, I recall the day I spied the cable company running lines past our house. I was thrilled we were finally going to have “speedy” access. (It was slow relative to today’s rate of connection, but it was far quicker than dial-up.) It happened to be a beautiful day, so I stepped out of my home office and walked outside to thank the technicians for finally running the lines to our house. “Not so fast,” the installers told me. “These lines are only for running hi-speed access from Sarnia to Bright’s Grove – not to the sparsely-populated area between those two places.” I almost cried when they told me it would be several more years before we had more than dial-up access. For anyone not familiar with dial-up access, it uses a ‘public-switched telephone network’ (PSTN) to make the connection to an ‘Internet service provider’ (ISP). It does this by using the telephone number that is already assigned to a customer of the telephone system. The computer is attached to a modem that translates and sends information between the computer, the servers and the internet. Without an established telephone system, there can be no access to the internet. Although dial-up internet access can usually be very low cost or free, it does take several seconds to establish a connection. Additional time, which I used to use to pay bills, was required to configure the protocols before accessing the data. Unbelievable by today’s standards, dial-up access could take five minutes to make a connection.

In our case, where there were no other options, dial-up was certainly better than no access to the internet, but there were two primary downfalls. Access was slow and sometimes non-existent. More importantly the line could be hijacked and used to make long-distance calls. Although we no longer have dial-up, it is still used in remote parts of the world. Dialer software can be downloaded unknowingly to a computer while the user is surfing certain websites, dropping the dial-up connection and reconnecting through a new number. Software dialers use the user’s modem surreptitiously to dial long distance telephone numbers, racking up enormous charges on the user’s phone bill. Others infect the computer with the dialer software while the user is away, dialing numbers after the system sits idle for long periods of time. Occasionally, we would read stories in the news of dial-up users receiving bills (primarily from Bell Canada and/or Cogeco) for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars for calls made by someone that had hacked their lines. Often the hackers were from far away countries and many phone and/or cable customers had no choice but to pay the bills. One cold February morning, I went out to the end of our driveway to pick up the mail. In the stack of bills was one from Bell Canada. By the time I had hiked back to the house, I had opened several invoices from companies wanting money. As I walked into the house, I tore the Bell envelope open and scanned the bill. It was higher than what I was expecting – not outrageous – but higher than usual. A cursory review of the items showed that “we” had made a call to Africa on Christmas Day. We had spent that day at home, and ‘My Beloved’ had been on the computer, but I was pretty sure he had not called anyone in Africa. Just to be certain, I checked with him. He hadn’t made the call, of course. Then I called Bell and explained that I thought our line had been hijacked. The guy on the other end of the line said, “Your husband was probably watching porn. That’s what a lot of these charges turn out to be.” “Not likely,” I snapped back. “Oh, he probably was,” the Bell rep insisted. “First of all, I don’t really care if he was watching porn online, but secondly I know my husband and I am willing to bet he was not checking out porn.” “It’ll take a few minutes, but I can check the number, if you’d like,” the rep challenged me. “I can wait.” He was right. It did take a few minutes. About ten. When the Bell rep got back to my call, he said, “It seems your line was hijacked but . . . uhh . . .it turns out the phone number your husband called on Christmas Day was for a BMW parts source in Union City, Georgia.” In return I said, “Then there is no need to apologize. For ‘My Beloved’ BMW parts ARE porn.”

Your Next Motorcycle Just Might Be An Electric Bike something the makers and buyers appear to be able to say with a straight face. One thing electric bikes share with motorcycles, but at a greater level is that gratifying acceleration. Electric torque can’t be beat, and when paired with an electric bike that weighs under 50 kg, it can be incredibly addictive, not to mention better than the motorcycle sitting next to you. A few manufacturers are even putting out explicitly retro motorcycle-styled electric bikes which look like 1930s racers or vintage cruisers to give a cheap and virtuous aesthetic kick to them. They are blurring the line with motorcycle history intentionally. The Kosynier retro bicycle pictured

has a top speed on non-public roads of 50 kpm | 30 mph, similar to motorcycles in the early 20th century that were raced in banked velodromes. It has a regulated mode limiting it to 25 kph for public roads, which I’m sure everyone will adhere to. It’s much cheaper to innovate around a bicycle framework. Many manufacturers have already moved to fat tires for improved traction and comfort. Many have decent suspension based on the hyper-competent bicycle suspensions from downhill racing. They even have ABS now. There are two person electric bikes like those offered by Riese & Müller. They obviously don’t need radiators, mufflers and many other components of traditional internal combustion motorcycles. One of the limitations that electric motorcycle manufacturers have faced is a combination of rider’s expectations for top end components with the inability to get those components from OEMs due to low volumes. It has taken Zero Motorcycles years of track time and negotiations to get decent brakes and suspension on their bikes, with only the past couple of

years’ models getting nods in reviews for those components. For electric bicycles, the rider expectation is much lower and the accessibility of relatively inexpensive but excellent components tuned from downhill racing and the like is much higher. Electric bikes are rapidly evolving to meet 80% of the use cases of the bottom end of the motorcycle market. The trend

is clear. The next generation of motorcycle manufacturers will be the current generation of electric bicycle manufacturers unless the majors get their houses in order. Zero will likely be around and possibly Energica, but electric bicycles will continue to improve as per Innovator’s Dilemma’s incredibly well-supported observations. Your next motorcycle will be a bicycle.

By Dawn Edmonds “He had the most kissable lips,” Eleanor gushed. “Everyone thought I had a crush on him ]because of his motorcycle, but really, it was those kissable lips. Soft and gentle but determined. Whenever I hear the name ‘Jack’, I think of those kissable lips.” Eleanor and I had been attending a conference about childhood trauma. And by Day 2 we were spending less time listening and more time passing notes. When she found out I rode a motorcycle, Eleanor launched into her own bike story. “It was 1964,” she began. “I’d had my eye on Jack for a few weeks. He was so dreamy. A shock of black hair, baby blue eyes and those kissable lips. “Our home town,” Eleanor continued, “was situated where County Road 2 crossed Highway 24. Whoever founded the town must have wanted to keep it small, ‘cause there was a crazy bend in the road almost as soon as you turned off the highway at the north end of town. We called it ‘Dead Man’s Curve’. We lived on

a farm located just past the south end of town. “There was always lots of work to do on the farm, but as we kids got older, we would sneak down the back staircase Saturday nights and go into town; being careful to avoid step number 3 and 7. They both squeaked really loud. We begged Papa to fix those stairs but he refused. Said they were his burglar alarms. Ha! Why would anyone burgle our place? There was nothing to steal. We knew he was trying to keep track of who was sneaking out of the house. “I had just turned sixteen and was madly in love with Jack. He was nineteen. Papa didn’t realize how serious it was between me and Jack but Papa didn’t like him anyway; first of all he was a boy and secondly, he was a lot older.” “Dads, eh?” I laughed. “Jack had graduated from high school and was working at the gas station. He’d had a part-time job there throughout high school. Eventually, he began working on cars and became indispensable to Mr Carruthers, the owner. “When my older sister and I had our parents’ permission we would walk into town around 8:00 on Saturday nights. I’d

Those Kissable Lips

be at the service station by 8:30 when Jack closed up. We would ride his motorcycle – a 1960 Scarlet Red Honda C71 Dream Touring model - over to the drive-in and hang out with the rest of the kids in town. Then we’d hop back on Jack’s bike and go find a secluded place to neck. “Papa didn’t say too much about me and Jack until I came home with a muffler burn on the inside of my right calf. I tried denying it but he knew better. He knew better because he’d burnt his own leg on a buddy’s muffler during the war. “And he went crazy when he found out which bike Jack was riding. One Saturday night in the summer of 1960, two teenaged boys were racing around Dead Man’s Curve on their motorcycles. The lead guy was hit and killed by a drunk driver. The guy in second place owned the Honda C71. He lost control of his bike and ended up in the ditch, but was not badly hurt. His dad – fearing for his son’s life – had taken the damaged Honda to the service station and asked Mr Carruthers to get rid of it. It was still sitting there, unfixed, when Jack started working at the station. He puttered away at fixing it and eventually Mr Carruthers just kind of gave it to him. “Our Papa laid down the law and said

none of his girls were going to ride motorcycles as long as they lived under his roof. We tried to argue with him but he held firm. We had no choice but to sneak rides behind his back.” Eleanor grinned and continued. “It was the middle of August. The beans and the corn were beginning to dry off. There’s always work to be done on a farm, of course, but this part of August was mostly about waiting for harvest. T h e other girls and I came running in from the orchard, giggling about our plans for Saturday night. Jack and I had decided to skip our usual stop at the drive-in and head straight from the service station to the lake north of the highway. I had decided to let Jack touch my boobs. I’d let him touch me through my bra the week before and was ready for the next step. The other girls and I flew into the kitchen just as Papa was sitting down at the table for lunch. Our conversations ended abruptly although we continued to squeal as we washed our hands for lunch. “The afternoon seemed to drag on forever. All I could think about was snuggling on a blanket near the lake with Jack. I almost fainted thinking about it! “I kept as busy as I could for the rest of

the day, helping serve dinner and cleaning up afterwards. Around 8:00 pm, I told everyone I was tired and going to bed. Papa and a couple of his buddies were drinking and playing cards in the dining room. Ma was heading to bed, too. “I didn’t go to sleep, of course. I looted my older sister’s underwear drawer and found her newest and prettiest bra. It was a bit big, but it looked so grown-up, I grabbed it. After dressing, I scooted down the back steps towards the kitchen thinking too much about Jack and not enough about the step number. As I touched down on step number 7, I realized my mistake and winced. I waited for what seemed like an hour and then tiptoed onto the bottom steps. I stood at the bottom of the stairs waiting for a howl of laughter from the dining room and then crept out the back door. “Running most of the way to the service station, I was breathless by the time I got there. Jack had already closed up the station. When I reached him, he kissed my mouth and ran his lips over my ear and down my neck. ‘Oh, baby,’ he whispered, ‘I can’t wait to get to the lake.’ Me, either, I squealed back. “Jack and I hopped on his bike. Over the sound of him kick-starting the motor I heard, “Eleanor Jean Pritchard! You get in this truck right his minute!” My stomach lurched and my heart dropped. “Go!”, I urged Jack. “Go! Please!” “I can’t, baby. It’s your dad.” “Eleanor Jean!” Papa hollered again. “I sobbed into the back of Jack’s jacket, but he helped me off his bike. I trudged over to Papa’s truck looking back only once. As I got into the passenger’s seat, I noticed Jack’s buddy, Mack, crossing the street towards the service station.” “Papa’s silent fury took up more room in the truck cab than his alcohol-laced breath. I knew I was in for a whipping, so when he pulled the truck into the drive shed, I walked into the house and headed straight to the basement. The howls of laughter from the men in the dining room only added to my humiliation. “The next morning, I stayed in bed past breakfast - still too sulky to face anyone. Around 9:30, I heard the phone ring and Papa talking. When he hung up the phone, he called up the backstairs, ‘Eleanor, come down to the kitchen. Your Ma and I need to talk to you.’ ‘Oh, great,’ I thought as I trudged down the stairs, ‘another lecture.’ “Ma was crying when I reached the kitchen. My brothers and sisters were looking down at the table and Papa had a very strange look on his face. ‘That was Jack’s dad on the phone,’ he said. ‘Jack and Mack were hit by a drunk driver last night. They both died.’ ‘No,’ I said shaking my head. ‘Jack can’t be gone. I saw him last night. I was on his bike with him.’ The reality of it hit me a moment later and I crumpled to the kitchen floor. Ma and the girls stayed with me while I sobbed; Papa and the boys used tractor repairs as their grounds for escape. “Jack’s parents were very kind to me. They included me in his visitation, funeral and the luncheon. They called me for a few months after Jack died, trying to keep in touch . . . but I was only sixteen. Jack’s death was a shock, but the rawness of it faded quickly. And I admit I was more beguiled by the notoriety than actually missing Jack. By December, I was madly in love with another boy. I can’t recall his name, but I do know he didn’t ride a motorcycle. He also didn’t have lips like Jack’s. In fact, no one since Jack has had those kissable lips.”

There was such a time when Levis wasn’t only associated with that flattering pair of blues that fit you so well, but also to motorcycles. From 1911 to 1941, the name Levis Motorcycles was associated with British two-stroke engines. As it is the case for many manufacturers, the war years delivered a blow Levis was not able to recover from, finally closing shop in 1946.

still had a large enough engine and sufficient enough power to carry a passenger without pedaling. Next, they were designed well so they were reliable, required a comparatively low amount of maintenance, and were easy enough for a novice to operate. Two-strokes In 1916 the 211 cc vertical two-stroke engine produced 3 hp (2.2 kW). An enclosed chain from the crankshaft drove the Fellows magneto and drive to the rear wheel was by Pedley ‘Vee’ belt. The machine weighed approximately 120 lb (54 kg). Their first racing success was in the Lightweight 250 class within the 1920 Isle of Man TT Junior race with a 247 cc

Levis motorcycles, manufactured by Butterfields Ltd of Birmingham, England were for many years one of England’s leading marques of two-stroke motorcycle. Levis built two-stroke machines from 1911, adding a line of four-strokes in 1928, which ran to 1941 when production ceased. The first Levis was made in the Norton works by designer Howard (Bob) Newey, but James Norton turned it down. Newey then joined with the Butterfields, Arthur and Billy, and sister Daisy, to set up a motorcycle company (Newey

machine, repeated in the 1922 TT Lightweight race. They then adopted the slogan, “The Master Two Stroke”. Levis built 211 cc and 246 cc threeport single-cylinder machines, including sporting versions. Most had 67 mm (2.6 in) bore with a 70 mm (2.8 in) stroke, and there was also a six port model. Four-strokes From 1928 onward Levis produced 247 cc (67 mm (2.6 in) bore x 70 mm (2.8 in) stroke) and 346 cc (70 mm bore x 90 mm stroke) four-stroke ohv machines and later added 498 cc and 600 cc ohv four-

later married Daisy). Their first model had a capacity of 211 cc. The word Levis comes from a latin word meaning light. The manufacturer found solid success in the lightweight class of motorcycles. The Levis became popular for a number of reasons. First, they were light enough so they were manageable, but

strokes. For a brief period a 346 cc side valve single, and also a 247 cc sohc single with chain-driven overhead camshaft were available. The company ceased production of motorcycles in 1940 to concentrate on development of Competition Competition By 1920, the company had dialed in the motorcycles’ performance to win in

ers, won many races including the 1922 Lightweight TT, while the four strokes excelled off road. Percy Hunt rode a 346 cc model successfully in races, and just before World War II Bob Foster gained many wins on a Levis ohv 598 cc bike in trials and moto cross. After these wins the company adopted the slogan, “The Master Two-Stroke.”

Then in 2016, entrepreneur Phil Bevan gave the brand a second chance at life and the first concept is out. Bevan had an idea and needed an out-

sical sense of the terms: the bike looks everything but retro. With its half-moon frame, metal-and-red color scheme, and dramatic body shape, the V6 looks more

ing some of the parts, the company built its own gearbox to ensure it teams up with the engine perfectly. Levis also plans on producing a limit-

let for it; he wanted to build a motorcycle based on a 2.0-litre V10 engine initially developed for the Connaught Type D GT car in 2004. So he bought the Levis Motorcycles name, hired designer Steve Kirk, and got working on his a motorcycle inspired by the V10 compact block. The result is the V6 Cafe Racer. Its looks don’t scream cafe racer in the clas-

futuristic than historical. The company confirms that buyers will have a choice of finish and colors for a customized look. The components are made of stainless steel and aluminum. The engine is a 1200cc V6 with an output estimated at 120 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. Firing order has been set to a linear 1 through 6 which, according to the maker, creates a very smooth run and eliminates the need for a balancing shaft. Despite outsourc-

ed-edition supercharged version of the engine and plans on launching it in 2020 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Levis’ first victory at the Isle of Man TT, in 1920. Levis Motorcycles will be showing the finished V6 Cafe Racer alongside the Urban Roadster (which we guess is another model in the works) at the Goodwood Revival event in September 2018. Pricing has been set at about US$132,000.

Calgary Mechanic Wins Yamaha Canadian Tech GP By Graeme Jones It took four attempts spanning eight years, but persistence paid off for Calgary’s Brett Hart when he was crowned champion of the 2018 Canadian Technician Grand Prix, held at Yamaha Motor Canada’s head offices in Toronto on Tuesday, July 24. For Hart, a finalist at the previous three Canadian Tech GP events in 2012, 2014 and 2016, it was a dream come true to hear his name announced at the awards ceremony in front of fellow competitors, Yamaha management, judges and staff.

Representatives from Yamaha Motor Company head office in Japan were even in attendance. “I am absolutely honoured,” said the master mechanic at Blackfoot Motorsports (Calgary, AB). “It’s such an achievement, and I’m so happy right now.” The 2018 Canadian Technician GP comprised nine different labs that challenged the technicians’ skillsets, from mechanical to electronic to customer service. Each lab tested the knowledge, patience and attention to detail of Canada’s top techs, reflecting the talent required to provide the ultimate service experience to Yamaha customers. Hart came out with the top overall average, earning high score in four different labs. “It was very challenging,” admitted

Hart, who will go on to represent Canada at the World Technician Grand Prix in Iwata, Japan in October. “The organizers do a very good job of trying to weed us out. These are the top eight technicians in Canada, so there’s a lot of competition. The labs were very tough, and that’s how they separate us.” “A huge part of Brett’s success was building on what he learned during previous Tech GP competitions, staying focused and understanding what the judges would be evaluating,” said Jeff Waite, Yamaha Motor Canada National Manager, Service. “Brett assessed all nine lab stations before starting and evaluated all resources available to him. The devil is always in the details, and this gruelling competition was no exception.”

When asked about what he expects from the competition in Japan, Hart was matter-of-fact. “I expect a big challenge. I have lots of homework ahead of me.” Rounding out the top three in this year’s Canadian competition were second-place Scott Szollos from Snow City Cycle & Marine (Toronto, ON) and thirdplace Patrick Gibson of Cycle Works Motorsports (Red Deer, AB). Gibson also won the Top Rookie award, while Alan Piuze of SM Sport (Quebec City, QC) won the Customer Delivery Award. The Yamaha Technician Grand Prix is organized as part of the Yamaha Motor Corporation Ltd.’s global service education plan. The goal of the Yamaha Tech GP is to raise awareness and increase competency of Yamaha’s technicians.

justright

Midlife KXF Crisis By Jeff Cowey After my harrowing experience on a un-named little dirt bike, returning to motocross riding seemed like not such a good idea. Being committed to riding with my daughter, quitting was not a option. The search was on for a more suitable ride and Kawasaki has always been my brand of choice. Spending the better part of the winter searching sites, ex-race bikes were all that was out there. Covered in fancy decals, modified to the “T” and no doubt raced to the end of their life. These war machines are not for me. Searching the net late one night, a 2015 KX250F with less than 2 hours on it appeared at Rockland Wheels Dealership. Just a little above my budget range, but this was my bike. Calling first thing in the morning and putting an over the phone deposit down, the bike is mine for half the price of new! Getting up at 2 am to start the 6 hour journey in the middle of a January ice storm was exciting…until I left the driveway. White knuckle is an understatement to describe my experience on the 401. There is the hour around sunrise when vertigo sets in, its time to get off the road. Making good time, a hot rod pick-up passed me on a ice covered bridge in Ottawa and lost it! Did a few 360’s bouncing off the cement medians with parts flying. Giving the drivers bug eye’s a wave while driving over his front bumper woke me up a little. Arriving at Rockland Wheels at 8am sharp armed with a dozen doughnuts for the employees, a young lad was wheeling the KXF off the showroom floor. Politely asking if he could help me in some way? my reply was “ Take these doughnuts for your comrades and put that bike in my

van!” Very helpful the crew went over the bike with me and loaded it up for the trek home. Making it as far a Peterborough and exhaustion setting in, we spent the night with my sister. Once home with my new toy and going over the manual, the realization set in that this was a hi-tec race bike. Interchangeable pc chips for different track conditions, umpteen suspension settings, 13.8 to 1 compression, liquid cooled, fuel injection, twin cam 4 valve and launch control are all things that never existed in my early years of riding dirt bikes. Now I’m scared! The first ride in early March on muddy trails was exciting. Not getting out of first gear we made the maiden voyage with the pipe barking and mud flying! Blipping the throttle was the only way to stay upright, full on wide open was not a option at this point. With some time before riding season begins a few up-grades were in order. Trail Teck kick stand provides support when no trees to lean the bike against are available. Carbon Fibre hand guards will save the knuckles when that sapling jumps out. A tiny Earth X Lithium Ion battery placed above the air filter provides power for the LED head lamp when on back roads or the after dark ride home. A bicycle tail lamp mounted to the underside of the rear fender helps to make the bike visible from the rear. A headlight is essential on the trails not only to warn oncoming traffic, but for the split second shoulder check to make sure your riding partner is still there. A bright light is easily recognized and taking your eyes off the trail for any length of time can get you into trouble real quick. Inverted forks create air pressure when pounded from jumps and constant rough terrain. Mini air bleeders were installed to relieve positive pressure from the forks after each ride. Having the head pipe ceramic coated will ensure nothing will stick inside or out. Launch control when engaged, adjusts engine timing to control wheel spin

off the line and disengages after shifting out of third gear. With no intention of ever holding the throttle wide open and dumping the clutch from a dead start, that little button will never be pushed. As far as the 3 map system goes the intermediate chip will be just fine to get started. Having over 20 settings for front and rear suspension, this was the most confusing part of set-up. With absolutely no knowledge, guessing the middle setting for each should do. A small adjustment was made to the rear so the suspension compressed evenly from front to rear with my full weight on the pegs. Out on the trails for the first time was exciting. A full blown race bike may be a little over kill for trail riding, however the feeling of control and power combined encourages limit pushing. Having no experience on a modern day MX bike gives a definite respect for the machine when the clutch is let go! Love that roll on wheelie torque that caught me off guard the first time the throttle was twisted past half way. This turned out to be a great feature when a puddle appears on the trail. A simple wrist twist is all that is needed to clear the front wheel no matter what gear its in. Navigating through tight trails and sharp corners is effortless as the terrain changes from mud to sand or hard packed with loose stone. The KXF is a light bike at only 230 pounds and can easily be manipulated around obstacles or humping over a log on the trail. Finding the bike very forgiving when a mistake is made like loosing the front end on a tight loose corner. Its sheer size and wide handle bars make recovery possible with a snap of the bars and a blip of the throttle. Going over jumps was a lot of fun in my youth. However landing was at best…harsh. Often bottoming out the suspension and almost loosing it was the norm. Anxious to get some air under the wheels, a small 3 foot high exit was the perfect spot to give it a try. The approach is downhill on a corner then a short stretch of straight so second gear

was my threshold. WOW! Getting big air and sticking the landing, a huge fluffy pillow came to mind. The suspension collapsed and rebounded making for a painless landing. Going over that little ramp another 10 times winded me but it was so much fun. Getting 4 or 5 feet of air is good enough for me, not going to attempt a 50 footer at my age. After a week of heavy rain it was a perfect opportunity to test the bike out in the mud. This not being one of my favourite conditions to ride in as it takes a lot of effort to stay upright and can take the fun out of riding. Choosing the white map chip for slippery track conditions we were armed and ready. It took some time to warm up and find my groove in the mud. Finding that a loose arm grip on the bars and trying to keep my centre of gravity now thats wehre the fun began. Gradually bumping up my speed and keeping momentum the mud was flying. Looking over my shoulder to see how high the rooster tail went almost planted me in the trees! Just for fun the map chip was swapped out to see if it made a difference. The change was very noticeable as engine timing created less traction in the rear wheel making acceleration more difficult. After each ride the KXF is hosed down and spit polished everywhere my fingers will fit. Don’t like the sight of dirt on my dirt bike when it’s sitting in the garage… the trails yes! A little tire polish may be going a bit far but it looks nice. Keeping it clean and well maintained will help hold its value but there are no plans to give my baby up just yet. Getting a new to me dirt bike for my 50th was the best present ever…to myself. Getting back on the trails with my Daughter has been so much fun and a great time to grow and bond together. After 2 full seasons and just over 10 hours on the KXF, it hasn’t bucked me off yet! With hopes that my Daughter never gives up trail riding so Dad can get out and be a big kid again, the next ride can’t come soon enough!
