The Hiring Manager is not their official title but in the hiring process they are the decision maker when it comes to you as candidates for the role they are recruiting for. They will likely be your direct line Manager but can also be more Senior than that in their position.

Why is my CV important to the Hiring Manager?

This is your chance to standout on paper to the Hiring Manager to showcase why you are a strong candidate for the role. A good CV will always get attention.

Will the Hiring Manager understand all military lingo?

In short no, whilst some clients and Hiring Managers will either be part of the Veteran community or a Veteran themselves do not assume this to be the case. Ensure that you park the Forces language and start to think about how you can translate your experiences to a Civilian counterpart role.

We are firm believers that the key to a good interview is good preparation! No matter how well qualified you are for a job, interviews can be stressful situations. However, with thorough preparation and practice you can give yourself the best chance of getting the job.

✓ RESEARCH THE ROLE Ensure you have an in-depth understanding of the role you have applied for, know the duties you will be expected to carry out and the person specification. It’s also very important to know about the organisation; their culture, their mission and their overall strategy. ✓ PREPARE EVIDENCE Think about the requirements of the specific job you are interviewing for and the key competencies that a successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate (use the job description or person specification). Then, try to come up with some real examples from your career where you have excelled in those areas and practice explaining the situations in a way which is clear, thorough, and emphasises your abilities. ✓ HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY Be honest about your attributes. If you try to convince an employer that you are something that you’re not, you would soon be caught out once you’d started the job.

✓ STAY CALM A small amount of nervousness is natural and expected before an interview. However, excess anxiety can only serve to hamper your interview performance. There are a number of ways to help with anxiety before an interview.

For example, showing up to the interview with time to spare, avoiding a late night before the day of your interview and engaging in in-depth preparation beforehand.

Don’t forget to smile! It reduces your personal anxiety and will make you and your interviewer feel more relaxed. ✓ TAKE YOUR TIME, ASK FOR CLARIFICATION Take time to think before you give your example. Don’t just rush in with one of your prepared situations if it doesn’t show that you have what they’re looking for. Be willing to ask the interviewer to clarify. If they ask you a vague question, rather than asking them “what do you mean?” you could say “do you mean such-and- such?” and show that you have at least tried to interpret what they’ve said. ✓ ASK ABOUT THE COMPANY Take time to ask the interviewer about the environment and the people. This process is as much about you evaluating their attributes as the other way round. ✓ PRACTISE THE STAR APPOACH

STAR Technique The STAR approach is a globally recognised technique designed to enable you to provide a meaningful and complete answer to questions asking for examples.

SITUATION Open with a brief description of the Situation and context of the story (who, what, where, when, how).

TASK Explain the task you had to complete highlighting any specific challenges or constraint (e.g. deadlines, costs, other issues).

ACTION Describe the specific actions that you took to complete the task. These should highlight desirable traits without needing to state them.

This is the most substantial part of any example and you need to include: • What you did • Why you did it • How you did it • What skills you used

RESULT Close with the result of your efforts. Include figures to quantify the result if possible.

TELEPHONE INTERVIEW If you are used to speaking to colleagues and clients on the telephone, undertaking a telephone interview can appear to be relatively straightforward. However, even highly capable candidates can perform poorly at this early stage.

✓ Find a place where you will not be interrupted, lay your CV / notes out in front of you so you can refer to them quickly if you need to. ✓ Have a pen and paper in case you need to make a note of anything. ✓ Answer the phone with a smile! Smiling can help you to relax and, as a result, you will come across as more confident, friendly and assertive. ✓ Talk clearly and distinctly and think about your pace; if the interviewer is asking you to repeat yourself it might be because you are talking too fast. ✓ Take time to consider your answer, if necessary, and make it clear to the interviewer that this is what you are doing, rather than just going silent. ✓ Finally express your motivation for applying for the role coherently and try to end the call on a positive note; thanking the interviewer for their time.

So be prepared to draw on your best examples, in detail, which demonstrate your capability and skills to deliver exceptional work.
