2017 is shaping up to be another great year for the fair. We will have motor cross two nights provided

by Tri-State MX and the demo derby will be back for our Saturday night prime time event. 2017 Miss Carter County Fair pageant information Eleven age divisions from 0-21 years of age will compete for the crowns of the Miss Carter County Fair pageant to be held Sunday, August 6 at 2 p.m. in the Prichard Elementary School gym.

Doors open at 1 p.m. with concessions available.

Deadline to enter is Thursday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. No late entries accepted.

Age Divisions include: Girls 0-11 months - Baby Miss 12-23 months - Wee Miss 24-25 months - Mini Miss 3-4 years - Tiny Miss 5-7 years - Little Miss 8-10 years - Junior Miss 11-12 years - Pre-Teen Miss 13-15 years - Teen Miss 16-21 years - Miss Carter County Fair Boys 0-23 months - Baby Mr. 2-4 years - Wee Mr. 2017 contestants will also compete on stage in formal wear or Sunday best attire. The 16-21 year age division Miss Carter County Fair 2017 contestants will also compete in swimwear and one on stage interview question.

Optional Photogenic and Portfolio competitions will be held in each category.

All Queens and Kings will receive a trophy, crown, sash, and free admission to the fair. 1st and 2nd runners-up will receive a trophy. Photogenic and Portfolio Winners will also receive a trophy.

Miss Carter County Fair will receive paid entry fee to the Kentucky State Fair Pageant in January after attending a minimum of three nights of the Carter County Fair with two of the three being Friday and Saturday. Miss Carter County Fair is open to all counties in Kentucky.

Contestants must compete in beauty competition to be eligible for portfolio and photogenic competitions.

2016 Miss Carter County Fair Tori Johnson and Teen Miss 2016 Elanor Ickes Beauty entry fees are $50; Photogenic $10 per photo (up to 3 photos no larger than 8x10, no frames); Portfolio $20 (6-15 photos in album no larger than 8x10).

Carter County Fair Talent Show Always a hit, the Carter County Fair Talent Show for 2017 is offering cash and prize incentives and the opportunity to see just how much talent our community has to share with the world.

If you sing, dance, tell jokes, or have any other talent we want to see you Tuesday, August 8 at 7 p.m.

Age divisions: Children 2-10 years Teens 11-17 Adults 18 and over To compete, there is an entry fee of $10 per act and contestants must present a complete registration form at the main stage from 6:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

1. ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible to participate in livestock shows, activities and sale at the Carter County Fair, District or Regional Shows or the Kentucky State Fair, a student must be a current member in good standing of the Carter County 4-H Youth Livestock Club, West Carter High School FFA, or East Carter High School FFA. 4-H: To participate, a student must comply with the 4-H membership policies.

Junior 4-H members are ages 9-13 as of January 1. Senior 4-H members are ages 14-19 (as of January 1). Junior and senior 4-H members must have earned 6 educational certification hours prior to their animal’s tag-in to participate in 4-H livestock shows. Cloverbud (or novice) youth are ages 5-8 (as of January 1).

Cloverbud members are only permitted to show goats, hogs, lambs, rabbits, and chickens.

FFA: A student who has enrolled in an agriculture class and paid the FFA dues can show his/her livestock at the fair. At any time the student does not enroll in the agriculture class while in high school, his/her membership and eligibility to participate in the livestock program ceases. Upon graduation, state and national FFA dues must be paid in order to maintain active membership.

During the shows, class distinction between 4-H and FFA will not be made.

All entries will be shown, judged, and awarded ribbons as one division.

A copy of the rules will be handed out at

tag-in and a form will be signed by the parent and 4-H youth stating they have read the rules and will comply with them.

2. TAG-IN - All members are expected to be at the tag-in with their animals. By tag-in, project animals must be in possession as outlined in the attachment entitled “Ownership, Possession, and Care Rules for Kentucky 4-H/FFA Youth Breeding and Market Livestock Projects.” Any waivers must be turned in by February 15 for market steers and by April 15 for market goats, hogs, and lambs. Steers, hogs, lambs, and goats will receive a KUIP tag and will have a DNA sample taken at a site and date determined by the Department of Agriculture.

- Any sexually intact male animal will not be allowed to be tagged-in (except rabbits). All animals must be visibly castrated or the youth must have a letter from the veterinarian stating the date the animal has been taken care of.

- All sheep and goats must have a scrapie tag prior to the KUIP tag-in.

Scrapie tags are available from the original producer or the KDA (www.kyagr.com).

- An exhibitor may tag-in up to 4 steers, 6 feeder calves, 10 lambs, 10 hogs and 10 market goats. * Market goats will follow the KY District Goat Show rules (same as State Fair).

Tipped is defined as the end of the horn should be squared off to ½” or larger.

(Any goat shown with horns is strictly at owners’ risk). * All market goats must be born after August 15 of current project year. Animals are subject to be mouthed to check age. * Market kids must be castrated. * All goats will be identified by KUIP ear tag. (Scrapie tags must be in market goats at time of first tag-in). *Feeder calves may be heifer or steer and must be born after January 1.They must be halter broken. A tag-in will be held for feeder calves in the summer. All calves must be vaccinated prior to tag-in.

The Feeder Calf must be in the possession of the youth at the summer tag-in. *Rabbits: Exhibitor may tattoo up to six animals, but will show a pen of three of the same breed, age, and color. They should be of a recognized meat breed, but do not have to be pure bred. Rabbits will be tattooed at a summer tag-in.

Rabbits may be either does or bucks. * Poultry: Exhibitor may tag-in up to six animals, but will show a pen of three of the same breed, age, and color.

They should be of a recognized meat breed, but do not have to be pure bred.

Chickens will receive leg bands at a summer tag-in.

3. BREEDING CLASSES Each species of livestock, with the exception of poultry and rabbits may have a breeding class. * Heifers must be shown as a breeding heifer OR a feeder calf, NOT both. * All breeding animals must have health papers. * All breeding animals must have a tag or tattoo. Farm tags with appropriate identification marks will be accepted as well as scrapie tags. * Classes will be divided by age.

Decision on class breaks will be made by the show committee. * All breeding animals must be shown by the 4-H or FFA exhibitor whose project it is. * Breeding animals cannot be entered in a market class, too.

4. REPLACEMENT No animal can be replaced after tag-in without prior approval of the Livestock Committee. Replacement animals are not eligible for Grand or Reserve Champion.

NOTE: The Livestock Committee will not be responsible for the loss of an animal due to sickness or death during Fairweek.

5. HEALTH PAPERS All animals (except rabbits and chickens) shall be accompanied by valid health papers issued by a veterinarian for the course of the fair. The State Vet’s Office can still disqualify any animal from showing and selling if conditions warrant, (Warts, Ringworm, Pinkeye or any other infectious or communicable disease that should develop after receiving health

papers). The State Vet’s decision is final and no one can over-rule the decision of the State Vet. 6. FAIR ETHICS AND ANIMAL CARE Everyone associated with livestock, be it on the farm or in the show ring, has a responsibility to the well-being of the animals. All youth must learn to properly care for their projects and develop acceptable livestock husbandry skills.

Exhibitors are expected to treat their animals in a manner consistent with good animal husbandry and display proper sportsmanship at all times.

The following guidelines will be used for student participation in the livestock program. Failure to comply may result in disqualification of the exhibitor by the Livestock Committee or the Judge. All exhibitors, parents/ guardians, family members, and guests are required to abide by the National Show Ring Code of Ethics. * The Show is a blow & go show only no use of adhesives, dyes or other coloring agents to camouflage the natural coloring of an animal, or the use of false tailheads or switches will be prohibited. Animals may be disqualified at the discretion of the judge or the rules committee. * Unethical fitting of an animal (such as injection of gas, solid or liquid or application of artificial hair, etc.) to alter the normal conformation will be just cause for the 4-H/FFA advisors and Youth Livestock Committee to disqualify the animal from competition and will not be allowed to show or sell. This also includes the use of any illegal drug to aid in the showing of an animal.

No animal may have their natural color altered. * Direct criticism or interference with the judge, fair or livestock show management, other exhibitors, breed representatives, or show officials before, during, or after the competitive event is prohibited.

In the furtherance of their official duty, all judges, fair and livestock show management, or other show officials shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation and respect and no person shall direct abusive or threatening conduct toward them. * If it is determined during Fair week an exhibitor is NOT caring for his/her animal properly (i.e., feeding, watering and cleaning stall), the youth will be given a verbal warning. If a second warning is necessary, the exhibitor and the project animal will be required to leave the fairgrounds, foregoing any further competitions during fair week. Eligibility to participate in a livestock project the following year will be determined by the Livestock Committee and 4-H or FFA advisor. * Any action by participants, guardians or parents not in the best interest of the show, auction, or banquet will result in automatic disqualification from the show

and auction.This can include (but is not limited to) the following: verbal or physical abuse to any Livestock Committee member, volunteer, 4-H/FFA exhibitor, or auction sponsor or supporter; illegal substances; or unethical treatment of animals.

7. SHOW AND SELL * A member may show as many animals as they would like. * A member may show in each category (beef, lamb, goat, swine, rabbit, and poultry) in showmanship. The animal must be their own project animal unless the youth is showing a non-project species. * The Youth Livestock Committee is responsible for providing ringmen to help in the ring during each show. No other adult may enter the show ring while classes are being judged unless the exhibitor is physically impaired. The rule does not apply to Cloverbud classes. * At the Fair weigh-in, the youth will designate which animal he/she plans to sell. * The member must be present and participate in the market classes and the livestock auction to sell his/her animal. Hardship cases will be decided by the Youth Livestock Committee and must be requested prior to the show unless an emergency situation. * All Grand and Reserve Champion animals must be sold at the Youth Livestock Auction. Exhibitors may sale 1 animal per species and up to 2 species of animal total (unless they have more that are champions). Exhibitors can sell either rabbits or chickens, but not both. * Beef and hogs will sell by the pound; goats and lambs will sell by the head; and rabbits and chickens* by the pen. *The chicken sale will be dependent upon KDA regulations. In the event that chickens cannot be sold, a premium auction will be held for the chicken exhibitors.

8. HARDSHIP CASES Hardship cases will be decided by the Youth Livestock Committee. These are circumstances beyond the youth’s control such as: * Medical emergencies * Death of an immediate family member * Natural disaster (floods, fire, etc.)

The circumstances need to be presented to the Youth Livestock Committee at the earliest possible time. Each case will be heard by the committee and will be decided separately. The concerned participant may present their case and then will be asked to leave while the committee deliberates. Hardship cases apply to the 4-H/FFA member ONLY not their livestock project.

9. ANIMAL WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS Animals must be properly tagged and have proper health papers in order to

participate in the showmanship class and judging competitions. Animals must meet the following weight requirements.

A. STEERS weigh between 900-1300 lbs.

B. HOGS weight between 220-285 lbs.

C. LAMBS weight between 90-140 lbs.

D. GOATS weigh between 40 & 120 lbs.

E. POULTRY EACH CHICKEN should have an ideal weight of 6-10 lbs.

F. RABBITS EACH RABBIT should have an ideal weight of 4-8 lbs.

Animals not meeting the above weight requirements will not be eligible for Grand or Reserve Champion.

2. 10. CLASS SIZE Class sizes will be determined by the number of entries in each category.

Animals will be shown by weight only and not breed. Classes will be divided by weight. Decision on weight for class breaks will be made by the Livestock Committee.

SHOWMANSHIP IS MANDATORY FOR EVERYONE EXHIBITING IN COUNTY ANIMNALS. EXHIBITORS SHOWING OUT OF COUNTY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO ENTER SHOWMANSHIP. Showmanship classes will be broken by age of the child.

11. ANIMAL CONTROL Animals that cannot be properly controlled by the exhibitor will not be allowed to be shown or sold at the County Fair. This decision will be made by the Judge or Youth Livestock Committee.

12. SHOW AND SALE ORDER & TIME A market animal sale will be held on a date chosen by Fair Board, beginning with the Sale of Champions. All Grand Champion animals will sell first, followed by all Reserve Champion animals. The other market animals will sell by species.

13. DRESS CODE Exhibitors are expected to dress appropriately for the show ring. When Judges need to decide between two really good showmanship exhibitors, they will often look at appropriate attire as their final consideration to determine the winner.

Attire should include: * Clean jeans or slacks with a belt * A button up shirt, appropriately buttoned and tucked in. * Boots or other safety shoes. Flip flops and tennis shoes are not appropriate.

14. COMMISSION A three percent (3%) commission will be charged to sell all market animals to help cover show expenses, awards, and the banquet. A banquet will be held in the fall after all money is collected.

15. Any volunteers who are working directly with the youth must undergo a background check administered by the Cooperative Extension office.

16. Questions on rules or decisions will be referred to the Livestock Committee and/or Fair Board. Their decision is final.

A protest must be made prior to show.

Protesters must pay a $100 nonrefundable fee.

Motocross and Demo Derby take spotlight in motor events Once again the sound of roaring engines and whine of motorcycles will be featured during this year’s Carter County Fair.

Tri State MX will provide the action, and the payouts for two nights, Tuesday, Aug. 8 and Friday, Aug. 11, during the fair.

Practice starts promptly at 6:00pm followed by racing at 7:30p.m. An entry fee is required with money and trophies going to winners.

2. Must remove glass and plastic from cars 3. You can run any tire 4. You can weld factory rear ends.

5. Wire doors, trunk,and hood in 6 spots. 3 strands at each point.

Or bolt the hood and trunk in 4 spots with 1/2" bolts only!

6. Gas tank and battery can be moved into the floor boards but have to be secured!

7. NO CREASING THE BODY OR FRAME!! Pre ran cars can

hammer the body only back into shape.

8. Frame can be notched. No welding on frame unless specified and no cutting off frame rails front or back. No adding anything.

No protectors of any kind!!

9. All cars can have any 1980 or newer car bumper!!

10 Bumpers can be welded on.

Single pass weld only! Factory shocks or none!

17. If you have a square body car it can be carbureted. If it's a bubble top car it has to stay factory injected.

Top Dog Promotion/NDDA 2017 Mini Car Stock Class - Freedom Hall Fresh Car Only!!

1. Wheelbase must not exceed 109".on front wheel drives or 105” on rear wheel drives cars.

2. No shortening “stubbing” of frames- front or back. No moving of axles to shorten wheelbase.

3. Must be 4 or 6 cylinder engines. NO V8s.

4. NO LEAFING MINI CARS- ex.

(No adding of extra leafs to existing leafs. Must run Factory leafs to the car you are running. No coil to leaf spring conversions).

Leaf Sprung cars have to run leafs on factory side of rear end and NO straight leafs! All components must stay factory!

Coil spring can be changed.

Front wheel drives can weld strut for height only. No added metal or anything to add strength.

No althread shocks or chained suspensions.

No 4 wheel drive vehicles.

5. NO AMC'S OF ANY KIND AND NO FULL FRAMED CARS!!

6. Stock gas tank Can be removed. Gas tanks must be relocated behind driver’s seat, securely fastened and covered.

Any visible leaking fuel will result in automatic disqualification.

7. All glass, chrome molding, hood latches, gas tanks, and rear

seats must be removed before cars arrive at the fairgrounds. NO GLASS!!

8. Stock type hood must be used.

Hoods must be open for inspection. Hoods can be secured in 6 places with wire only 3 strand each spot. You may use 3/4” all thread only in core support with 3” max spacer, but this will count as 2 of your 6 places! The factory rubber bushing between the sub-frame and frame must remain!

9. Seat belt, helmet and eye protection must be worn at all times.

10. Radiators must stay in original location and can be wired on all four corners. You may run electric fan. Factory condensers only and they may be wired in, not welded. NO added protectors of any kind.

11. Batteries must be moved to the passenger’s side floor board.

The battery box cannot strengthen the car in any way.

NO more than 2 batteries 12. No welding on frames or body seams. This will be checked. No plated frames. FRAMES CAN NOT BE SHAPED OR HAMMERED IN ANY WAY!!

13. Cutting the ends off bumpers and fenders for clearance is permitted.

14. All cars must sit level within 5” with no car sitting lowers than

16” from the bottom of the bumpers or higher than 21” from the bottom of the bumpers.

15. Sunroofs must be covered, no exceptions.

16. 4" x 4" Floating cage is permitted! It can not touch the tunnel or floor. The back bar can't be any further back than 12" from drivers seat. NO kickers of any kind off the cage to anything.

Cage is for SAFETY and NOT for strength of car. Gas tank holder can touch sheet metal by 2"x 2" tubing only. No flat plate or Wide C channel. It can't be welded or bolted to anything on the back side. More for safety than strength. Must conform to tank.

Or the holder can touch the window bar. Not both!! I say it that way because some front wheel drives may want the second choice. Questions please ask first.

17. Motor swaps and rear end swaps are allowed. (no bracing) rear end itself can have a brace...(NO BRACING)FROM REAREND. Which keeps suspension stock. MY FAULT but I am sharing this. Below says NO Prot. at all. Slip shafts are allowed.

18. No protectors at all. Engine cradle only!! NO other protectors!!!! *Front pulley protector only. Can't add any other strength or will be cut!

19. You can use aftermarket steering column, Factory tie rods.

Front sway bar cannot be welded or used for strength in anyway.

20. Transmission coolers or oil coolers are allowed. No transmission protectors at all.

21. Any year factory bumpers which can be welded are allowed.

Loaded factory bumpers are ok.

Must be inside bumper only!!

If it's a homemade bumper it CANNOT have a sharp point!

Anything that more than a 6 inch point over a 30" span. If we think the bumper is too much or unsafe it will not run!!! It's always Safer to call first!!!

Bumper shocks not to exceed 8 inches, they will be measured from back of bumper where the shocks are mounted/bolted/welded! NO YOU CAN NOT USE A SHOCK THAT IS NOT FACTORY TO THAT CAR. YOU CAN USE A PIECE OF 2"x 2" PIPE OR TUBING!!

EVEN ON FACTORY SHOCKS THEY CAN ONLY BE WELDED THE FIRST 8" NO EXCEPTIONS AND NO YOU CANT BOLT THEM EITHER. YOU CAN MAKE THE BUMPER SHOCKS SHORTER BUT NOT LONGER!!

22. Doors and trunk can be welded 6" on and 6" off all the way around. You can run a back window bar that connects to the roof of car 6" on the roof and first 6" of the trunk only. No larger than 2"x 2" Material. The body of the car can be creased but the rear quarter panels have to stay upright and trunk needs to have a 12" inspection hole.

2017 Carter County Fair rules and regulations 4-H EXHIBITS 1. Open to all Carter County 4-H members.

2. One entry per class per exhibitor.

3. Danish system is used in judging (Blue, Red, White).

4. Exhibits must have been completed since September 1, 2016.

5. Exhibits will be accepted from 2:30-5:00 on Sunday, August 6th.

6. Premiums will be $3.00 for blue, $2.00 for red, and $1.00 for white.

7. Junior division includes ages 9-13; Senior division includes ages 14-18; Cloverbud division includes ages 5-8.

All items must be family friendly.

(Examples could include but not limited to: porch swing, chaise lounge, picnic table, lawn chair, large planters, etc.) This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) the item and 2) a folder containing photographic documentation of the steps taken in order to complete this exhibit.

4-H ENTOMOLOGY CLASSES 1. Specifications for exhibits: a. 9” x 13” folding cardboard insectcollection boxes available through UK College of Agriculture, Department of Entomology, should be used. Homemade or purchased wooden exhibit boxes may be used instead. They must be approximately 18" x 24" and not more than 3 1/2" thick with Plexiglas or glass covers and cellotex pinning bottoms (or plastazote or polyethylene pinning bottoms available from entomology supply stores such as Bioquip.com).

Boxes must be easily opened (for instance; if a screw is used to secure Plexiglas tops, use a thumbscrew fastener instead of a fastener that requires a tool). b. Specimens are to be arranged so the box can be exhibited horizontally. 4-H'ers may attach wires to the back of wooden boxes to help make them easier to display. c. Identification labels available from your County Extension Office must be used. Instructions for pinning and labeling are included in your project literature. d. One half of the specimens may be from the previous year's collection or from anywhere in the United States; one half or more must be Kentucky insects collected since the last Kentucky State Fair. e. For the first through fifth year projects, a display collection catalog must be in an envelope attached to the back of the display box. Envelopes should be attached to permit their being opened easily to remove catalogue from them without moving the exhibit. f. Most specimens in the display cases should be pinned, and the use of vials is discouraged. If vials are used, they may account for no more than 2% of a collection. Vials must be securely wired or pinned to the pinning bottoms. g. The inclusion of non-insect specimens (spiders, e.g.) is encouraged, but because this is primarily an insect collection, and because non-insects do not preserve well on insect pins, points will be deducted if there are more than one specimen from each non-insect class.

3. Each exhibit must be secured with a lock. Attach a key to box with your name and county firmly attached to key. Keep another key in case this key is misplaced.

4. Hinges and Locks should be flush or mounted on sides or top of boxes, so boxes will sit level.

5. If fabric is used, use a fabric glue to adhere entire piece of fabric to box.

Suggested fabrics are felt or velveteen.

6. Rocks, minerals, and fossils should be firmly attached to the box, and should be numbered to correspond the number on the Geology Identification Labels.

7. Boxes will be displayed on their side, not flat. Therefore, larger specimens must be attached near the lower portion of the box.

HORTICULTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITIONS Horticulture is the science, art, technology and business concerned with intensively cultivated plants that are used by people for food, for medicinal purposes, and for aesthetic gratification. Horticulture is divided into two categories: The cultivation of plants for food (pomology and olericulture): Pomology deals with fruit and nut crops. (not included in photography classes) Olericulture deals with herbaceous plants for the kitchen, including, for example, carrots (edible root), asparagus (edible stem), lettuce (edible leaf), cauliflower (edible flower), tomatoes (edible fruit), and peas (edible seed). (included in photography classes) Plants for ornament (floriculture and landscape horticulture).

Floriculture deals with the production of flowers and ornamental plants; generally, cut flowers, potted plants, and greenery. (included in photography classes) Landscape horticulture is a broad category that includes plants for the landscape, including lawn turf, but particularly nursery crops such as shrubs, trees, and climbers. (not included in photography classes) For the purposes of the Kentucky 4Horticulture Photography Contest, only photographs representing the areas of Olericulture and Floriculture will be accepted.

Items may be made from purchased kits that meet the individual project guidelines.

The sizes mentioned in the classes below (such as 5” X 7”) relate to the amount of stitching, not the size of the fabric, frame, or finished item.

829 Knitted project focused on Texture: Exhibit one item or pair of items using charted designs or design your own.

Charted designs must include multiple pattern stitches such as Aran Isle knitting or

lace knitting. Knitting with beads is also acceptable. Original designs must include a copy of directions, notes, and any diagrams used to create the item. LACEWORK -- TATTING Item to which the tatting is attached may be purchased, made by member or by someone else. Judging is based on tatting and quality of workmanship in attaching it to the item.

830 One thread tatting: Tatted item or item embellished with tatted edging or tatted motifs using a tatting needle or shuttle and single thread. Item should include rings with picots and double stitches only.

Quilting or tacking should be done by hand or with the use of a conventional sewing machine.

The message written in the card or letter is more important than the decorations. Write your name and county on the back of each card/letter and place each card/letter in a plastic sheet protector. (For the fair, it is best to use a fictitious address and contact information on the invitation or thank you.)

Unit III: Where I Live 897 Accessory for the home created by the 4-H member - This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) the accessory and 2) a sheet or folder of documentation. Documentation is to include: a sketch or photo to show how the accessory is used in the home and a description of how the design and colors fit in with the other furnishings and color used in the home. Examples: stitchery or appliqué wall hanging, latch hook items, pillow with applied design (stitchery, appliqué or other media), rug, picture in appropriate frame and ready to hang.

898 Individual place (table) setting: This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) one individual place setting appropriate to a theme or event chosen by the 4-H member and 2) a color photo or diagram of the place setting showing how it should be arranged. Include plate, beverage container(s), placemat, and napkin.

Additional decorative item(s) are optional.

All items that make up the place setting are to fit on the surface of the placemat.

Flatware (knife, fork and spoon) must be included in the photo/diagram showing how all the items are arranged. To insure that all pieces get returned to the member, write the name and county of the exhibitor on tape and place it on every part of the table setting in a location hidden to the public.

903 Purchased article selected by 4-H member to solve a home decorating problem – This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) the purchased article and 2) a folder of documentation. Documentation is to include a description of the problem to be solved, alternatives considered in the solution of the problem, how the plan was carried out, resources used (time, money) and member's evaluation of the results (satisfaction with purchased article, how article is used in the home), and photos illustrating the before and after effect. Examples include wall decoration, lamp, vase, storage item, desk accessories, bedspread, rug, table linens, pillow, and draperies.

904 A cloth article made by the 4-H'er showing a major home improvement – This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) the cloth article and 2) a folder of documentation. Self- Directed ADVANCED PROJECT –the intent of the following classes is to give members an opportunity to put everything they have learned in Units I-IV of the home environment projects into practice.

905 Furniture Experience—Furniture which has been refinished, reupholstered, recovered, recycled, reused or remodeled Exhibit is to be made up of two pieces: 1) the piece of furniture and 2) a folder describing the original condition of the furniture (include a picture if possible), work required in completing project, time and cost involved, and how item is used in the home. DO NOT INCLUDE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED FURNITURE. 906 Design Experience - Create a plan for or actually complete a design experience.

The exhibit is to be made up of two pieces: 1) a home furnishing item which is representative of the design experience (item may be made by the member or purchased) and 2) a folder or notebook describing the plan. Examples of project ideas: a plan for redecorating a room; creation of an accessory item using an original design of 4-H member; notebook with pictures and descriptions of architectural styles used in Kentucky homes.

907 Heritage Experience - Complete a heritage project. The exhibit is to be made up of two pieces: 1) an item representative of the heritage experience and 2) a folder or notebook describing the overall experience, the significance of the project to your

family. Examples of project ideas: Restoration of a family heirloom (could include caning, reseating, etc.) including who it belonged to and the significance to the family; study of furniture styles including pictures and history; study of old buildings in the community including photos and descriptions of the architectural significance, period of history, uses of the buildings; create an item after learning a heritage or craft skill...especially from an older family member or friend and describe how skill was learned, how interest was stimulated and how you will use item and skill.

908 Major Home Improvement Experience - Complete a major home improvement project. The exhibit is to be made up of a notebook which describes the project, tell whether project was an individual project or a group or family project, describe the do-it-yourself skills learned time and cost involved. Include before, during, and after photographs, if possible.

Examples: improve storage areas in the house or garage; paint the house; wallpaper and decorate a room; remodel the basement.

4-H LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT 1. Exhibits MUST correspond to a project or activity from the Leadership and/or Communications project books.

2. Only pages relevant to project are needed. Additional pages are allowed but will not be judged.

This means the fair judges have the privilege of opening all jars in the classes. Jars must be sealed or cannot be entered with classes.
