Barstool Brought Down Montclairfest 2012

Thousands of neon-clad partygoers mobbed downtown Montclair outside the Wellmont Theater on Thursday night in connection with Barstool Blackout, according to police reports. Billed as “the world’s biggest blacklight party,” the Wellmont had to cancel the show when excessive drinking lead to trampling

and alcohol poisoning, as well as one human bite.

Police and emergency services brought a total of 24 people to local hospitals.

Around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday night, a “mass casualty” call came over the police scanner, which refers to any incident in which emergency services must respond to several casualties at once.

Student Government Association and Student Life at Montclair will host the annual Montclairfest on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21. The event, sponsored by The Fresh Clothing, features performances by Washington D.C. rapper Wale, Compton rap-

Changes to graduation requirements and course registration have some students scrambling to adapt in order to be ready for summer and fall registration, which begins on April 9.

One important change is the renumbering of various courses in the arts and sciences, especially in the new

School of Communication and Media.

Another change is in the general education graduation requirements. The "Scientific Issues" and "National and Global Issues" requirements are being eliminated.

A Beloved Red Hawk Moves On Dean Harris retires after over forty years of dedication to the University Catherine Baxter News Editor

After over 40 years at Montclair State University, faculty and staff must say goodbye to James Harris, the associate dean of students.

Dean Harris is an MSU graduate and was a member of the National Guard for 26 years. He returned to MSU as a graduate student in 1969 and received his teaching certification.

Harris is in the Athletic Hall of Fame for indoor and outdoor track and fencing, has planned the world fair and food festival and has been the advisor for many sororities and fraternities. Harris has also served on the President's Commission on Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity for the university Harris plans to make an impact even after retirement, especially in African American and Latina communities.

“I intend to remain in very involved in the civil rights leadership,” he said. “I was just elected as president of NJNAACP for a twoyear term. I want to pay attention to getting involved in advocating some changes in values, particularly in reducing the number of unwed parents in African American and Latina community.”

Harris is most upset about leaving behind the students and faculty.

“The thing that I will miss the most is the other students and the professional colleagues,” said Harris.

“The students bring me the greatest satisfaction.”

Harris has learned a lot from his years at the university. “In my 40-plus years at the university, I’ve been involved in so many things: counseling students, new student orientation professor, coached cross country, served as ombudsman for

last five years and was a 504 compliance officer (services students with disabilities),” said Harris. “The values that I try and get across are that every student’s concern is important and the institution needs to be responsive to the students’ needs.”

Many faculty members are sad to see Harris go. “Dean Harris has been a major source of support and inspiration to many students during his 31 years at the university,”

“We were made aware of the event about 1:30 p.m. by Montclair State University EMS director Michael Ricker, who was going to be staffing extra personnel expecting an influx of intoxicated students following the event,” said Chief James Simpson.

Earlier that night, groups of MSU students could be seen leaving their residence halls decked out in highlighter colored t-shirts, white knee socks and neon body paint ready for the show.

Students who posted on Barstool Blackout’s Facebook page were asking for tickets to the sold out event up until the last minute.

According to Nicki Santana, director of Student Life at Montclair (SLAM), the programming board initially considered bringing Barstool Blackout to campus.

“I heard about the Barstool Blackout tour before it came to MSU and we were in talks with the people who are in charge of it,” said Santana. “But [we] decided to not go forward with it because it really wasn't worth the price.”

“I can say that MSU, SGA or any other orgs were not part of the Barstool Blackout,” said Santana.

While the initial buzz may have died down, Montclair State students are still talking about Barstool online.

“I know people are talking about it,” said Ryan Miller, a broadcasting student who attended the event.

“It's all over everyone’s twitter.”

“We arrived around 8:00 and the line was already down the street

and pretty reckless. Everyone was drunk. Literally everyone,” said Miller.

“Some people were absolutely belligerent,” he said. “By the time we got to the front of the line, we were getting pushed to the ground and over barricades.”

“There were crowds of people on both sides of the road for blocks,” said Miller. “People were reckless all night.”

A post that appears on Barstool’s Facebook page and on twitter reads, “MSU goes to hard I guess.”

Student groups on Facebook, including MSU’s Students for a Democratic Society have been posting links to videos of the crowds and police outside the theater, generating critical comments from viewers.

“Glad to see people banding together for a good cause...” wrote one student. “Namely binge drinking, chauvinism and probable date rape.

Hooray!”

Others posting on Barstool Blackout’s Facebook page expressed their disappointment over the canceled shows.

“Beyond angry,” commented one student. “RESCHEDULE[D] BUT NOT IN MONTCLAIR.” According to Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Karen Pennington, "Neither the University or any recognized group of the University had any part in the production or support of this show."

She said that one individual who attempted to sell t-shirts with “MSU” and “Barstool Blackout” written on them was immediately told to stop using the MSU name and logo without permission.

said Dr. Karen Pennington, vice president for student development and campus life. “His love for and dedication to the MSU community are unparalleled and he will be missed.”

Stephanie Wright, leadership coordinator for fraternities and sororities, was also sad to hear he was leaving. “He has been one of my greatest supporters,” said Wright.

“There are so many [memories I have], but every August he asks me

what I have planned for the Greeks and what changes I will make within the community that particular year. I always look forward to his challenges. When I heard about his retirement I was excited for him, but then I thought, 'Who's going to have those conversations with me each August?'”

Dean Howell, dean of students, had the best wishes for Harris.

“Dean Harris and I have worked together since I came to Montclair State in the fall 2005 semester,” said Howell. “Dean Harris is a very good mediator. He cares for students and supports them. I wish him much success in next phase of his life. I am sure that he will continue to make a positive impact on society.”

Faculty members had many things to say to Harris. “It has been a pleasure working with you and learning from you,” said Wright. “I hope that I will continue to make you proud. See you at the post office!”

Many students also felt the effect of Harris. “Dean Harris, you truly are a mentor that positively affects everyone you come in contact with,” said Tyler McKinnon, a junior communication studies major. “It has been my pleasure to have been able to work so closely with you for the last two years of your career. Your intellect, passion and genuineness has inspired me to commit to success and stop at nothing to achieve it. MSU is a better place with you and you will truly be missed.”

Harris has not yet decided what will be his last day at MSU, but it will be before July 1. However, he assures students that he "will always have a close connection to MSU and will always come back and see what’s going on.”

New Changes for the College of the Arts

After 24 years of dedicated service, the College of the Arts will be losing its dean, Dr. Geoffrey Newman. His retirement marks the end of an era defined by the expansion of the college by monumental proportions.

The College of the Arts consists of a multitude of majors, including fine arts, performing arts, film, dance, television, communication, art and design, ceramics, painting and sculpture.

Over 20 years ago, Montclair State College was looking to become more prominent in the arts. The College of the Arts was three departments with very little professional skill training. Its primary program was art education with very limited studio areas with enrollment under 800 students.

“My job as dean is to lobby and represent the constituent base in order to improve the conditions through which students and faculty work,” said Newman.

Through fundraising, community outreach and increased funding for the arts, the College of the Arts at

Montclair is ranked among the top in the nation.

Johnny Vorsteg, a dance major, is impressed with the education he has been able to receive. “The level of talent that comes here looking to teach and work is incredible. Dean Newman has had a major influence in the upward mobility of this program,” he said.

Newman has personally hired three-quarters of the faculty and staff currently employed in the college. Now, there are five departments, 62 majors, eight facilities and more graduate programs.

“Articulation agreements have expanded international activity and linkages with schools outside Montclair,” said Newman.

Within the state, there are articulation agreements with community colleges. However, Montclair is the only school in the nation with a linkage to the Moscow Conservatory of Music. Also, agreements are in place with schools in nations such as Hungary, New Zealand and Australia.

“This place has really been transformed. Our students can study anywhere in the world. My advice

to the new, incoming dean would be to learn how to function in an environment that is constantly changing,” said Newman.

“He has helped put Montclair on the map,” said David Schwartz, a musical theatre major. “This program has grown in leaps and bounds.”

Dr. Daniel Gurskis will take over as dean beginning July 1. His background is in film, and he currently is the chair of the film department at Brooklyn College. He will be taking over a musical theatre program that is ranked in the top five in the nation.

“Gurskis comes to Montclair State from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York where he is a professor and chair of the Department of Film and a special assistant to the president,” said Diane Reed, Montclair’s media consultant, in a press release. “He has overseen the creation of a new graduate school of cinema to be located at Steiner Studios, the largest film and television production facility outside of Los Angeles. Gurskis has held creative and management positions in film, television, theatre and advertis-

ing, and he has performed pro bono work in arts management.”

“Having worked in both the academy and the arts,” said Gurskis in the same press release. “I am interested in the ways that the arts and the media articulate in higher education, not only with each other, but also with the entire curriculum and ultimately the world at large. The growing reputation of the College of the Arts at Montclair State, especially in New York City, presents an extraordinarily vibrant opportunity to provide the highest quality programs for students in both the traditional and emerging disciplines.”

President Susan A. Cole also commented in the press release. “We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” said Cole. “Gurskis understands the arts, he is engaged with the world of emerging media, and he is a committed educator."

“It is a tough act to follow,” said Clay James, chair of the musical theatre department. “Dean Newman has been instrumental in making so many programs here become a reality. It has been a rewarding experience working with him.”

students sang, made speeches and recited poems. Some female members of the MSU Players Club even did dramatic readings from The Vagina Monologues. Some female students who attended the event felt that "Take Back the Night" conveyed a very important message for the women on campus.

“This night is meaningful to women because it shows them that there is someone behind them and supporting them because there are more people then you realize that have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. 'Take Back the Night' lets them know that there are people who support them, whether it’s directly or indirectly, " said Mandy Brasile, senior.

But the night wasn't just for MSU's female population. It was a night for all members of the community to come together and make a difference.

Sean Schofield, internship coordinator for the family and child studies department, stressed the fact that all members of our community need to work together in order to make a difference. “'Take Back the Night' is important for both men and women because these acts of violence against women aren’t just affecting women and I think that men need to realize that. It’s really stopping men and women from being complete human beings," Schofield said.

Perhaps the most poignant part of the event came at the end of the night when everyone joined together to rally around the Student Center Quad and let all of their voices be heard.

A few participants held banners to show others what they were protesting but everyone, male and female, ended the night by shout-

ing, "Women, unite! Take back the night!"

The event was part of Project Unity, a series of events sponsored by the Office of Residential Education and Services that promote the awareness and prevention of three different social issues relevant to modern society: discrimination, sexual abuse and suicide. The project includes "The Tunnel of Oppression," "Take Back the Night" and "To Write Love on Her Arms."

"Take Back the Night" was Project Unity's second event of the week, focusing on sexual abuse and the damaging effects it has on the women of our society.

Each year, 500,000 women are raped in the United States. "Take Back the Night" is a way for women to be heard and to take back the power they feel they have lost to their attackers.

The first "Take Back the Night" event took place in Philadelphia in 1975 in response to the murder of Susan Alexander Speeth.

Speeth was stabbed a block away from her home while she was walking. Soon after her death, groups in Europe began having their own "Take Back the Night" events under the name "Reclaim the Night."

Now, people all over the world join together to hold their own "Take Back the Night" events.

Sexual abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time; Montclair State University is no exception. Addressing the problem is the first step in finding a solution and MSU's recent "Take Back the Night" event was a step in the right direction.

Artist times will be released as the event approaches. There will be food, games, vendors, merchandise and more.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, April 5 at 8 a.m. in the Student Center Commuter Lounge. Tickets for M-Glow are $10 for MSU students with ID and $20 for non MSU students. Tickets for Montclairfest are $15 for MSU students with ID and $30 for non-MSU students.

A two-day pass that grants access to M-Glow and Montclairfest will also be offered for $20, but is only available for MSU students.

Tickets are non-refundable. Students may only purchase two tickets each and one must be an MSU ticket.

Montclair State rapper Kase shared his excitement for the events. “Montclairfest should be awesome. Both Wale and Tyga put on great shows, which has me even more excited to open up for them,” Kase said. “After six semesters of writing and recording my music in a dorm room, it feels amazing to be able to finally get my name out there on a much larger scale with such big names performing."

“I'm really excited for Montclairfest,” said Christina McCall. “It's always a great time with great performers and I can't wait to see Kase tear it up on that stage!”

Some students did not have as positive thoughts as McCall about the event.

“I’m not sure why SGA chose to have the event at 11:30 a.m. on a Saturday," said Marissa Stapelman.

“It’s too early and a lot of students aren’t on campus over the weekend.

With all these changes, some students are worried that they may not be ready to register for their required courses.

Students should check their WESS accounts regularly to stay updated; all changes are currently reflected on WESS. Those in the new School of Communication and Media are asked to meet with their advisor before their registration priority date in order to transition into the new curriculum.

The advisors promise to make the transition through the changes to registration easier.

“These advising meetings help me bond with my students,” said professor Chris McKinley, an advisor in the communication studies department. “I am excited about the new program.”

In order to prevent the changes from hindering registration for fall and summer courses, students should make their schedules in anticipation for registration by adding their selected courses into their

WESS registration cart.

On registration day, saved cart courses can be added onto schedules.

Classes fill quickly, so there is a chance that a selected course may no longer be available.

Students should register as soon as they are permitted in order to secure their courses.

Classes for the fall semester fill quickly; summer courses are a great way to earn graduation credit during the long break.

The summer program, which starts on May 14, offers nine different sessions, the time period during which a summer class takes place.

The summer semester offers more than 750 undergraduate and graduate courses.

This year the summer semester will offer more courses, including online and hybrid courses.

Students can earn up to 15 credits per year from summer courses.

Taking Back “Sluts” Take Back The Night vs. SlutWalk

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Yet, with someone being sexually assaulted every two minutes in the U.S., only three precent of rapists serving even a day in jail and survivors of assault being exponentially more likely to suffer from depression (three times), abuse drugs (26 times) and contemplate suicide (four times) than the general population, many activists are not content with just another commemorative month. With 80 precent of victims of sexual assault being under the age of 30, this is one of the most immediate issues surrounding college students.

The term “rape culture” has floated around casual feminist conversations and classrooms since the 1970s, although its connotations extend far beyond theory. Much ink has been spilt describing the reach of rape culture, but defined succinctly, it articulates the sexual climate that encourages male sexual aggression and violence against women. Within the past few decades, feminist collegiate activists have devised two unique approaches to combating the omnipresent concern of sexual violence.

Take Back the Night (TBTN) has developed quite a reputation around college campuses. A favorite for Women’s Centers and Women’s Studies Departments, TBTN is a concise manifestation of second-wave feminist ideals like Consciousness Raising, headlining speakers and marrying grassroots with mainstream. Minimal controversy surrounds these events because they are careful to balance radical protest with honorific vigils.

Those in attendance are often moved to emotion, some even moved to further activism, but it is just as easy to fall in as a silent observer. TBTN events range in effectiveness based on an individual planner’s efforts to either make the event inspiring with prolific speakers or by encouraging attendees’ involvement with

workshops, open mics or marches.

The original Take Back the Night was indeed a march in Belgium in 1976, called “Reclaim the Night.”

Women attending the International Tribunal on Crimes against Women held candles while they marched to protest violence committed against women globally; the idea stuck, and women marching to “Reclaim the Night” reappeared in Rome, West Germany and eventually San Francisco — marking its ascent into Western feminist consciousness in 1978.

By the time it hit the United States, the meaning shifted away from protesting rape and violence as a whole, but more specifically, decrying pornography and rape as intrinsically linked to women’s subordination.

TBTN has reappeared on college campuses around the United States and the world, and the event is often an annual staple to campus life.

This year marks the first in a few that MSU has held a TBTN event, sponsored by Residential Education.

Typically, these are large-scale events with multiple co-sponsors from academic departments and campus life programs alike. The atmosphere is reverent and somber, looking more like an intimate healing space than a raucous protest.

In 2011, a very third-wave response culminated to the secondwave efforts of TBTN. SlutWalks, when they originated in Toronto last April, created international and internal feminist waves for its radical approach to the familiar issue.

Both spawned from similar insults: TBTN retaliated against statistics of rape and assault, SlutWalks against a police officer’s comment to college students that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Both also draw strength from bringing masses of (predominantly) women to publicly march in protest. TBTN worked to reclaim the night, and the danger associated with being a woman roaming after hours, by marching with candles to light their way through the dark. SlutWalkers, however, boldly march through busy streets during peak hours of the day. Both movements strive to reclaim unsafe space, but SlutWalk does so to achieve not just safety but attention.

On one hand, SlutWalks may just be what a “post-feminist” society demands. An article on Minding the Campus: Reforming Our Universities cited only 70 students in attendance at a Take Back the Night rally.

The SlutWalk in New York City last October, meanwhile, boasted about a thousand marchers. Not only does SlutWalk attract a crowd, but it can also draw a mob — perhaps equally crucial in garnering mainstream attention. TBTN has been called “tame” by feminist and non-feminist journalists alike; not only has it made campuses and streets safer but it, as a movement, is safe. SlutWalks, however, are an aggressive affront to many, who then incite dialogue about the meaning of “slut.”

For a fledgling movement founded by a small group of college

students, SlutWalk has been receiving wrath around the world by a plethora of critics. Older generations of feminists, including some college students, have taken issue with SlutWalk’s brashness. Forcing a “slut” label on its marchers, some argue, is damaging to all women. Defenders of SW retort that this fear of reclaiming “slut” is itself “slut-bashing” and “victim blaming.” Because the founders of SW were white, middle-class, college women, arguments have been made that it caters to a limited, privileged few. While white college students may have the leisure to march around in provocative clothing, women of color have different connotations of sexual objectification.

They argue that the majority of SlutWalkers are limited in the understanding of “sluttiness” that Black or Latina women in particular face, for their sexuality from a Eurocentric, male gaze. The sex trade, linked to slavery, is a painful connection many women may make to the term “slut.” Reclaiming a derogatory term that refers to sexual subservience and ownership is far from empowering.

Certainly SlutWalk is imperfect, but Take Back the Night has been able to age to a point of reverence and respectability due to its trials and errors. With TBTN tamed by decades in media spotlight, to the point of irrelevance to many and appearing more like our mothers’ college days than our own reality of party culture and slutbashing, SlutWalk does represent an exciting advance in feminist collegiate activism. Perhaps it is unfair to dismantle a movement barely old enough to walk for its short-sighted feminist incongruence. With its oneyear anniversary coming up, it can still use a reworking, but one that allows for growth rather than demolition.

Dive in to Great Savings in the Sunshine State

Florida is a popular destination for college students. With a variety of things to do and the warm sunny weather, it seems as if they flock to the sunshine state. Although this warm weather state may be popular, doesn’t mean it is exactly in the budget.

Many things come to mind when you think of Florida: Disney, Miami, the beach, warm weather and swimming with dolphins. Tourists want to get the most out of their money and see and do the most they possibly can.

Sure you can spend a ton of money swimming with dolphins in a pool or you can save money

and swim with manatees in their natural habitat! I have gone on a manatee swim, which included a three hour trip through Crystal River in which we swam/snorkeled with manatees throughout the three hours. Swimming with manatees cost anywhere from $35-$99 per person, often in the $40 range. The tour was amazing and we had ample opportunity to swim with the manatees. It truly was a unique and amazing experience.

About two hours away is Discovery Cove, a popular destination for vacationers in the Orlando area. I personally have not been to Discovery Cove, so I cannot share you any personal stories.

For a half an hour dolphin experience, which includes wading with dolphins in a pool for most of the duration and going into the deep end for the dolphin to push you back in or grab on to the dolphin’s fin to be pulled in, you’ll pay anywhere from $300-$400+. The dolphin experience also includes admission into the park.

I know the idea of gas comes to mind. I bet you are thinking well, I’m staying near Discovery Cove in Orlando, what about gas? Don’t worry, I have that all figured out.

For a round trip excursion, with gas prices where they are, it should cost less than $50 for the average vehicle.

So, let’s do the math; your tour and gas is under $100! You can save up

to $300! I don’t know about you, but I would like to keep an extra $300 in my pocket.

Next time you and your friends are planning a trip to Florida, think twice before booking your dolphin experience, your wallet will thank you for it.

Hooked on Pinning The Pinterest Craze

I stumbled upon Pinterest (literally… or figuratively? I found it through StumbleUpon.com) in the spring of 2011. There weren’t many people on it; however, after only a few minutes of exploring the site, I was obsessed. I had been looking for ideas on the web for arts and crafts, and do-it-yourself projects — soon I realized Pinterest was not only a haven for that but also things like recipes of all kinds, fashion and style inspiration, interior design, travel and much more.

The premise of the site is pretty self-explanatory: to pin your interest.

As the site describes it, it’s a place to “organize and share beautiful things you find on the web.” The site asks you to make “Boards,” which I like to think of as folders, or filing cabinets, and you label them based on what you will be pinning on to them. At first, you are given default boards that they label, for example, “Favorite Places And Spaces” or “Books Worth Reading” to get you started.

The next step is to set up the site’s feature called “Pin It,” which you add to your Internet browser’s bookmarks so while surfing the web you find something you’d like to file (“pin”), or share, you simply click “Pin It,” select a picture to represent it, and Pinterest then adds it to your chosen board.

Over several months, Pinterest has reached an impressive 10 million users, and that’s had quite an effect on the site. In its description, Pinterest lists its “Pin Etiquette.” I loved this because usually I am within the first people to sign up to the newest social media sites, and I have watched Tumblr, Instagram and even Twitter drift from their original functions and become somewhat ruined by people using them for obnoxious publicity, virus scams, plaguing it with inappropriate content and online bullying. I was thrilled to find “Pin Etiquette” asking users to be authentic, to respect other users and their opinions and to

site their sources.

As lovely as this all sounds, nothing is that simple, and since the site gained its current popularity, there has been increased criticism about users pinning content belonging to a third party. If you are a Pinterest member, and check your e-mail, you know that they recently changed their Terms of Service.

Originally, Pinterest said that by pinning, users are assuming the rights to the content and the site reserves the rights to sell it. There was a lot of black lash from pinners in the form of mass pinning a picture that read “Pinterest please change your terms or I’m leaving.”

Personally, I re-pinned the picture and then stopped pinning for a while, mostly from fear rather than rebellion. However, Pinterest listened and they removed the word “sell” and any intention of it from their Terms and Conditions all together.

While pinning content from third parties is still risky, Pinterest is going strong and urges users to cite the sources of their content and not to re-pin anything that does not have a source.

If you haven’t given in to the craze, I strongly recommend it.

But if you’re anything like me and are prone to wasting embarrassing amounts of hours surfing the Internet, be forewarned! The site is a compilation of the best of the best on the web. Find inspiration for anything from weight loss and fitness goals, to following your wildest dreams, never-ending fashion ideas, decorating tips, home remedies, cars and motorcycles, technology; it is a haven of topics that are sure to peak anybody’s interest. As co-founder Paul Sciarra said of why he believes the site became such a success, “[The] best Internet services aren’t just ways for people to escape their everyday lives. Instead, those services with longevity — with real legs — enhance folks’ day-to-day experiences, deepen their relationships, and show them things about themselves they didn’t know before.”

Rethinking Daily Consumerism Katherine Oakes Staff Writer

I kid you not, as I proceeded to begin writing an article on more effective ways to consume less — using less plastic being number one — I realized that I had just bought a bag of pretzels from the vending machine. Staring at my purchase in horror, I came to the conclusion that I had no business writing that article until I reassessed my own consumer habits. There were a million reasons I used to justify that purchase: I was hungry, I was short on time, I was short on cash, I really wanted those honey mustard pretzel nuggets, etc.

All these things are avoidable in my and my dad’s book, as they relate to saving time and money, yet it happened anyway. It also reminded me of something Jillian Michaels, from the television show The Biggest Loser, had said once that was painfully applicable to my rather embarrassing situation. She said, “If you really want to lose weight, you will find time,” replace “lose weight” with “consume less on a daily basis,” and you have the perfect mantra.

A better scenario would have looked something like me pulling out a reusable Tupperware container with a real utensil, healthy, organic snacks and water in a reusable water bottle. That sounded like a snore-fest in comparison to those honey mustard pretzels I had been craving all day, and that is the simple truth: that sometimes your appetite and a tight class schedule take precedence over the environment. As condemnable and horrifyingly selfish as that may be, it’s very much a natural part of life. All the environmental facts in the world plus wild horses could not keep me away from those pretzels because life gets crazy, time seems like it is totally NOT on my side and in that moment I was only thinking of myself.

So, that is where we stand now, readers, at the corner where reality and environmental awareness meet.

I have to say, it’s not always my favorite corner to be on, but I seem

to be there quite often. Being 100 percent eco-friendly 100 percent of the time is not possible for those of us living in urban areas, with hectic schedules and tight budgets. You have to learn how to compromise.

Sit down with yourself, have a nice chat, draw a few charts, make a list or two and try to discern what you are capable of doing 75 percent of the time.

For me, I learned that packing meals and driving less were two things I could most definitely do on the reg. Not all of us have the time, resources or ability to plant plentiful gardens with an abundance of fresh, organic vegetables for salads or a nice healthy smoothie. Perhaps, someday you can get there, but that’s not the reality of the situation, so it’s best to focus on what you can do, however small it may be. And, hey, if you want to go buy honey mustard pretzels from a vending machine, I won’t judge you for a second.

Shape Up for Summer Spring conditioning tips

Spring is a great time of year to lose those unwanted pounds and added body fat. A walking and bodyweight strength training program combined with healthy food choices, increased daily water intake and an added effort to get at least seven to nine hours nightly sleep will help you build lean muscle and shape up for summer. Translation: Walk more each day, strengthen upper and lower body muscles a few times a week, opt for natural rather than processed foods and beverages, make water your main drink and make sleep a priority. Start following these tips below for a new you by summer: 1. Walk, walk, walk. Start by aiming for 15 minutes of non-stop walking around the MSU campus each day.

After two weeks, try for 20 minutes.

After a month, do 30 minutes of walking daily. The walk does not have to be all at once — it could be done in 10-minute increments morning, afternoon and early evening, for example.

2. Every other day, do 15 body weight squats followed with a 30 to 60 second hold on the last rep to

strengthen the lower body muscles.

Then do 15 wall push-ups (beginners), 15 kneeling push-ups (intermediate exercisers) and 15 regular floor push-ups knees off floor (experienced individuals) — and on the last rep, hold for 30 to 60 seconds in the push-up position to strengthen upper body muscles.

Tips to get in shape for summer 1. Walk, walk, walk!

2. Strength training.

3. Drink lots of water and eat smaller portions more frequently.

4. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep nightly!

3. Keep an eye on nutrition! Health and fitness professionals suggest making water your choice beverage and consuming more foods in their natural state such as fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and protein sources such as eggs, lean meats and fish, yogurt and cheese. Eat smaller and more frequent meals containing protein and complex carbohydrates every few hours rather than two or three large meals spread out across the day to optimize metabolism and stabilize blood sugar.

4. Get those seven to nine hours of sleep nightly. Sleep researchers note that individuals who regularly sleep less than seven hours tend to accumulate more body fat, while getting eight hours of regular sleep each night helps reduce body fat.

Wellmont Blacks Out

Whoever thought selling 2,500 tickets to a venue that can only hold between 1,000 to 1,500 for a concert that is billed as “an orgy of sound and lights for all your senses” that “leaves nothing but a path of destruction in its wake” deserves a pat on the back.

But only if that pat is followed by a slap upside the head and a “nyuck nyuck nyuck” in classic Stooge style.

The Barstool Blackout Tour runs on a lethal combination of hard drugs, hard liquor and hard-ons that would even make Charlie Sheen think twice (though he would probably still show up), so it came as no surprise to find out that the show

was over before it even really began.

Barstool U, a website designed for young men by young men to share photos of their biceps, glorify their academic mediocrity and flaunt their most recent hookups, sponsors the nation-wide tour which seems like a good idea from the 80s that just finally came to realization and has quickly earned a reputation for police intervention.

Montclair was no different. Twodozen counts of alcohol poisoning and one human bite later, police from seven different towns had to be called in to herd the horny, druggedup college students and forcibly remove them from the premises.

This predictably resulted in 2,500 disoriented people with little to no regard of their surroundings running rampant through the quiet streets of Montclair on a Thursday night.

We have nothing against black light parties, we have nothing against drinking and we have nothing against the combination of the two, but when the objective is to lose all control at the sacrifice of your reputation (online and offline), it just doesn’t sound quite so appealing anymore.

The entire Barstool Blackout concept revolves around exploiting young college students who are enjoying their first taste of parental

freedom and inviting them to drink, roll and grind themselves into a state of artificial ecstasy (no pun intended) with little no regard of the consequences for the attendees.

With the amount of damage to both people and property that this tour “leaves in its wake,” shouldn’t someone be held responsible for the resulting carnage?

The idea of booking this Blackout tour at your venue is perplexing as it seems to just be inviting mayhem and destruction into your town regardless of whether you are foolish enough to over-book or not.

Supreme Court Passes Pat-Downs for Patriots Ruling allows strip-searches without reasonable suspicion

T

ake them to a private place, ask them to remove their clothes and then inspect each garment.

Once naked, proceed from Jacob Mercer-Pontier top to bottom and front to opinion editor back.

First, tell them to run their hands vigorously through their own hair, to show there’s nothing hidden on their scalp, then tell them to pull their ears forward and turn their head to show there’s nothing tucked behind them.

Next, tell them to tilt back their head to reveal the nostrils and to roll their tongue around in their mouth. You might also ask them to pull their lips away from their gums, and lift their arms to show there’s nothing in their armpits. Then, on to the torso and lower body...

No, this wasn’t ripped from the pages of

a modern-day romance novel.

This is the official procedure agreed upon by United States Supreme Court Justices who ruled on Monday that officers may strip-search people arrested for any offense, however minor, before admitting them to jails even if the officials have no reason to suspect the presence of contraband.

Though the controversial ruling, passed with a 5-to-4 vote, does not say that strip-searches of every new arrestee are required, it means that a strip-search can be conducted without question after being arrested for driving with a noisy muffler, failing to use a turn signal, failing to keep your dog leashed, failure to pay child support, smoking within 25 feet from a Montclair State University building or riding a bicycle without an audible bell.

This ruling comes on the coattails of a civil-rights lawsuit by New Jersey resident Albert W. Florence who was wrongfully arrested based on a warrant for a supposedly unpaid fine.

Florence was held in a Burlington county jail where he was strip-searched before being moved to an Essex county jail where

he was strip-searched again. He spent a total of eight days as a holdover inmate before he was released.

Here we have a classic example of rewarding bad behavior. Instead of remedying the ever-increasing problem of dishonest officers and violating procedures, the Supreme Court instead ruled in a contrary notion, simply smudging the offending literature from the books.

That “smudged” literature is a bit of modern-day fiction by best-selling political theorist John Adams: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

This delightful piece of prose, often referred to as the Fourth Amendment, was penned by Adams in the late-1700s during a simpler time when strip-searches were an unnecessary procedure because you could recognize a threatening individual simply by the color of his coat (that color

being red).

In those good old days, one would have to travel to Europe to enjoy the licentious pleasures of an involuntary strip-tease but now you can probably just idle your car for too long or honk in New York City.

It seems more apparent with each passing year that privacy is going to have to be redefined not as “the freedom from interference or intrusion” but the superhuman ability to bury aspects of your personal life so deep that Facebook, Twitter, Google and even YouTube’s ever-watching viral eyes can’t find it. Private vs. public is becoming a matter of subjection and that is the first step towards dystopia.

This, of course, is in the name of safety and security for all so that we can sleep a little better a night knowing our children are protected because somewhere, someone who made an illegal U-turn is having their genitalia inspected for weapons.

A Broad in Florence: Classical Europe My Personal Journey Back to the Enlightenment Era

ntering my apartment I tossed my keys across the wooden table in the kitchen and grabbed my laptop.

Sitting down, I opened the screen and Lori Wieczorek instinctively Foreign typed in “facecorrespondent book.com.”

My original intention was to send my professor an email but apparently habit seems to dictate my actions. Scrolling across nonsensical status updates and event invitations I heard something that made me pause.

Music. No, it wasn’t rock or pop, nor was it even the alternative music that I have grown so fond of. There is just one genre of music that can really make me drop what I am doing and close my eyes to really listen, classical music.

Last month there was a handful of nights where, if the apartment was silent and my windows were open, I could hear someone practicing flute. I would smile and go over to my window, peaking my head out and frantically trying to find the source of such a beautiful sound. My roommates would laugh and brush it off as just another noise.

But today, I experienced something that I have never experienced before. I literally stopped what I was doing and walked over to my window. Pressing my elbows against the brick ledge I stuck the top of my body completely out of the window.

Was it a recording? I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t care.

It wasn’t until I heard the applause that I knew that someone, very close to my apartment building, was performing the most beautiful classical piece I have ever heard.

At this point, I opened both windows and stared into the alleyway. The temperature was perfect outside and on this particular day, the breeze carried little white puffs across the entirety of Florence.

It looked like it was snowing, but instead

of snow falling to the ground these flowers were rising up. At that moment, listening to that beautiful music and looking at the rising white spores, I was the happiest I have ever been in my life.

I desperately wanted to share this experience with someone, so I grabbed my phone and was met with the familiar sight of ‘No Service.’ Tossing my phone aside I realized that perhaps the reason why this moment was so perfect was because there was no technology. Maybe the most significant moments are ones that you experience alone.

This thought has been sitting at the edge of my mind for the last two months.

Technology is neither convenient nor accessible in Italy.

I have not watched T.V. since my arrival, my time on the Internet is limited due to the bad connection and I hardly ever check my phone because I either don’t have service or simply walk the few minutes to my friend’s apartment.

My time away from technology has taught me to appreciate the small things.

It may seem cliché, but I wouldn’t have nearly been as happy if I was watching

some reality television BS, excuse my language. It seems tragic that other young adults can not tear themselves away from their computers long enough to realize that there are other things in life.

You may not be in Italy, but you aren’t locked in a cellar. Take a vacation from technology, read a book, take a walk, appreciate life for what it truly is, a great compilation of moments.

It actually took a considerable amount of digging to find a couple of individuals who knew enough to formulate an opinion on the matter.

Many declined to be interviewed because they just weren’t informed enough on the subject to talk about it, which is disheartening, to say the least, considering these are the very people who will be affected by these laws in the scope of a few years.

The subject of healthcare was brought

to light by the recent debates held in the Supreme Court over some particulars that the coined “Obamacare” would implement. One, specifically, was a mandate for every adult in the United States to own healthcare by the year 2015 or receive a penalty paid through taxes.

The question that was asked in the court was: does this mean the introduction of a new tax? This is definitely a detail that college students should be familiarizing themselves with, since young adults are only able to stay on their parent’s plan until they are 26.

That means that not too long after graduation, many of your and my peers will be shopping around for a healthcare plan if it is not provided by an employer.

Once upon a time, the age for independence from our parents plan was younger, but we can thank Obamacare for a few extra years to help get emerging graduates and real world novices on their feet.

Another portion reviewed by the Justices in Court had to do with funding to Medicaid. The deal is that states are able to receive large quantities of funding for Medicaid if the state to state programs are up to federal standards, basically transforming a state run program into a federally run program. States can choose to pull

out of this, but they will ultimately receive no federal funding for their Medicaid programs.

Federal government argues the justification of Medicaid being a federal matter lies in this nation’s dependency on the program. It seems to be so vital to such a large group of people, nationwide, that the sensical move would be the conversion of the program from state run to federally run.

Twenty-six states, primarily conservative ones, have argued vehemently against these specificities of Obama’s health care plan and actually filed a lawsuit against it. They claim that transforming Medicaid into a federally run program undermines the role of states and the relationship of the state to the individual in the context of health care.

They also dispute with the moot point of government playing too major a role in the lifestyle of the individual with these kinds of laws. That not everyone should have to buy health care, and the government making this assertion is one pit stop on the road to a socialist hootenanny.

But health care is different, and could be considered the loophole for a country that prides itself on being happily democratic.

and everyone will need it at one point or another. In an ideal world, the only people who need medical attention are the people who have healthcare insurance.

But we do not live in that world, and there are approximately 50 million people in the United States who do not own insurance. Every person who is uninsured has just as much of a chance of needing medical attention as the insured ones.

And health insurance providers with partisan conditions under which they will accept individuals leaves those who are the sickest and in greatest need of health insurance absolutely helpless. Obamacare is a chance for our nation to distribute healthcare fairly and finally to everyone who deserves it.

The Declaration of Independence identifies the inalienable rights of man to be life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Well, how is man supposed to pursue happiness if man gets sick and can’t see the doctor because he (or she) isn’t insured?

Yes, the 3D experience does sound like a new thing for all the kids that have a Nintendo DS. Many famous artists such as Skrillex and Deadmau5 will have their music featured in the new installment.

Also, many characters such as Red, Mario, Yoshi and Samus Aran are featured in the game, while others such as Link, Zelda and Pit are M.I.A. This is kind of disappointing because the only thing funnier than seeing Samus do the robot would be Link popping and locking.

Yes, it builds nostalgia but with a twist, a twist which can be compared to an M. Night Shyamalan movie. The controls and gameplay are also very simple; the top screen would have Nintendo characters dancing to the beat while the bottom screen utilizes rhythmic touch movements.

Speaking of games, have you heard about Google’s new idea to make Google Maps on the NES?

Google is creating a cartridge that can plug into your NES, then on the top left hand corner of the cartridge there is a small slot where you plug in an Ethernet cable so you can have Internet connectivity. Then you are transported into the game. The world’s display in 8-bit graphics, and there you can search for a destination like the regular Google Maps.

When you search for directions, a character based on the first Dragon Quest appears and marches out your route on the map. The use of classic video games with a real-life Maps system will sure be popular with gamers everywhere.

The most nostalgic thing I had the pleasure of experiencing this past April Fools was the return of Toonami. Cartoon Network decided to broadcast some of the best Toonami shows such as: Trigun, Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing and many more.

This brought old Cartoon Network fans joy, even if only for a few hours. The 90s kids of America that did not watch were deeply saddened by the fact that Toonami aired for that night only.

Spindrift’s New Album is out of this world Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 Emilia D’Albero Staff Writer

It’s always cool when bands write songs to be featured in movies, and it’s even cooler when said songs are included on one of the band’s albums. But Los Angeles psychedelic rock band Spindrift takes this concept to a whole new level — their latest release, Classic Soundtracks Volume 1, is an entire album made up of songs set to different genres of film.

The album, which eight different directors helped create, is a masterful blend of many different types of film. The mental image that one would get from listening to Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 can only be described as a coming-of-age spaghettiwestern Bollywood space epic, complete with Native American tribal sounds. If that’s too confusing, just imagine John Wayne playing the lead role in an outer-space version of Slumdog Millionaire that was directed by both David Fincher and James Cameron, written by Christopher Nolan and takes place in the Valley of Gwangi.

But surprisingly, Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 is not too complex to take in all in one sitting. The album glides smoothly from one track to the next, almost as if each track is its own small film in which the conflict is resolved just as the song ends, and leaves nothing to be desired from the listener… that is, until the next track plays.

Spindrift’s new album is like something out of a dream.

flute melodies but transitions straight into “Space Vixens Theme,” which combines futuristic synth with tribal sounds and paints a vivid image of, well, bellydancing space vixens in cowboy boots, for lack of a better phrase. Later in the album, “Theme from Confusion Range” inches its way into the spotlight with too-cool-for-school basslines and chord progressions, and sounds like a song one would listen to while playing hooky and wearing Ray-Bans.

Spindrift showcases their vast musical ability on

“Theme from Ghost Patrol,” an otherworldly dance track that is reminiscent of Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia” and this song includes bouncing guitar riffs, strong percussion and what sounds like distant male choral vocals. Closing out the middle section of the album is the short but sweet “Devil with a Gun”, which sets the Devil-Went-Downto-Georgia vibe for the last few songs on the album.

“Theme from Amboy,” “Roundup” and “Showdown” all embrace the country-western influence that runs so strongly throughout

the entire album, but Spindrift suddenly switches it up with “Theme from Drifter’s Pass,” which ends up sounding more classic rock than anything — but who’s complaining? Certainly not me.

The final track, “Red Reflection,” is a slow-paced track that reinforces Spindrift’s psychedelic label with entrancing female vocals and the Native American flutes once again, bringing the album full-circle and leaving the listener with a sense of fulfillment. This can only come from either watching ten movies of different genres

or listening to Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 all the way through. But when it comes down to it, the latter is definitely the better decision, both time-wise and content-wise.

What I’m Reading this Week A Comical Adventure Alan Vallee Arts Editor

Sometimes it’s worth it to wake up early in the morning and go to your local comic shop. This is one of those weeks. Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s Wolverine and the X-Men 8 is excellent as always, with Aaron delivering a solid yet adventurous script that focuses on everyone’s favorite furry science nerd, The Beast, with Bachalo’s art more charismatic and detailed than the last issue, proving that he can only get better with time. And as a bonus for readers, Broo gets put in charge of the letter column.

Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible 90 reveals the big secret hinted at in previous issues and further demonstrates how truly fabulous a character Dinosaurus is. Really, it’s all in the name.

Ottley’s art has remained consistent throughout his entire run and as always it feels fun and exciting to look at, evoking superheroes in their prime squeaky-cleanness even in the darkest, grimmest parts of the story.

Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth concludes the Unnatural Habits storyline with a few shocking twists and some expected and unexpected

deaths. As always, Lemire builds the characters of Gus and Jepperd in surprising ways, giving Jepperd a new

friend in the form of a former hockey player, Jimmy Jacobs.

Lemire’s signature style continues to be both strange

and somehow comforting.

Garth Ennis’ The Boys 65 concludes the storyline “Over the Hill with the

Swords of A Thousand Men,” wherein the truth behind the entirety of Butcher’s misery and The Homelander’s mania is revealed.

While the initial readthrough of the comic makes the revelation shocking and paints the series in a darker light, the scenes lose impact on subsequent readings and ultimately just fizzle.

The art in this issue is split by Russ Braun, John McCrea and Keith Burns, who do a fantastic job showcasing Ennis’s patented ultraviolence in a way that does not demean the audience for reading it.

Rounding off the week is Mark Waid’s Daredevil 10.1. With art by Khoi Pham, Daredevil has rarely looked better and brighter, a fantastic change of events in this volume.

From the heartbreaking Daredevil volume 2, which seemingly had as its goal to showcase how twisted the minds of the writers were, we get this new volume of Daredevil which is Mark Waid’s love letter to the swashbuckling spirit of early Daredevil and his exploration of what a man filled with nothing but tragedy and heartbreak does after reaching the breaking point.

Is the World Ready for Out Artists?

Progressive rapper Will Sheridan made a major splash on the web when the former Villanova starter came out of the closet. This gutsy move was followed by an even riskier one.

After he was done dominating the basketball court, Sheridan decided to set his sights on recording music.

Sheridan is now producing fastpaced dance tracks like “Welcome to the Jungle” and even some hardcore hip hop tracks like “302,” which can be downloaded on iTunes.

On April 3, Sheridan headlined a concert at Fat Baby in the Lower East Side of New York with a slew of other out performers. These performers are defying the odds by making music that spans across various genres while staying true to themselves.

The show was two hours of pop, rock and hip hop music from fresh faces and showed that the future of music may have to make room for openly gay artists.

The lineup included Swaggjesty, a pint-sized rapper that packs a major punch. His flow, which he laid over upbeat instrumentals, kept the crowd swaying from side to side of the dimly lit bar. His content ranged from overly vulgar to full on narcissistic, and the crowd loved every minute of it. He definitely lived up to the swag in his name as he confidently tugged at the brim of his snap back hat while he danced to his own tracks.

The host, house singer SAMN, added his own flair of dance music to the showcase. He performed two tracks off his latest project, Synthetic Hearts. His humorous way with words kept the crowd, of about 25 people, entertained between each set.

Will Sheridan isn’t letting his sexuality stop his flow.

The crowd was enchanted by the vocal performance of drag queen superstar Sir Honey Davenport.

With her face illuminated thanks to an amazing spotlight, she twirled and sashayed across the stage. A slight malfunction occurred when she lost her wig, but like a true performer she recovered quickly.

Will Sheridan’s set was like an offBroadway production and definitely delivered an amazing show. His use of elaborate props and intense backup dancers prevented any onlooker from looking away as he performed his new single “Here Comes the Sun.” The show quickly turned into a full on party since the crowd couldn’t contain their energy! The show was a huge success thanks to the inti-

mate setting and the endless energy of the acts. Everyone seemed to enjoy the music as well as each other’s company as they danced till the DJ said it was time to leave.

MSU wins Five of Last Six for 7-3 Record

Women’s lacrosse currently in 3-1 in Skyline play Steve Ricci Staff Writer

The Montclair State University women’s lacrosse team was coming off an odd loss in the Skyline Conference to Farmingdale State College when they headed up to Mahwah, N.J. to take on Ramapo College in another Skyline Conference game on Wednesday, March 28. It seemed the girls were playing with an edge to their game. Nine players recorded at least one point in the 19-7 win.

Junior Kailee Beal scored five goals while senior Cora Delfini added four goals and two assists as Montclair tallied the first nine goals of the contest, improving to 6-3 overall, 2-1 in the Skyline and 2-0 in the NJAC. Beal put the Red Hawks on the board just 1:12 into the game, scoring unassisted. Delfini helped in the next four goals for MSU while she assisted with Maggie Fallon’s goal and set up Beal for her second of the game.

With 25 minutes still remaining in the game, the Hawks already had a 3-0 lead and that would only increase as Delfini scored the next two goals with Fallon recording her second of the match giving Montclair a 6-0 lead.

In the span of 12 minutes, MSU managed to score three more goals

Ramapo would score three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 10-3. However, the Red Hawks posted the final four scores of the half, including two more

Montclair scored five more goals in the second half for a final goal tally of 19. Schoneveld finished with three

goals and seven draws while Fallon registered three goals and two assists.

Freshman Brittany Dilger forced a team-best four turnovers and Junior goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson stopped seven shots.

The Red Hawks traveled up to Troy, N.Y. to give Sage College a little taste of what it means to be a Red Hawk.

MSU posted its first shutout of the season in a 17-0 victory over the Gators. Montclair improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The women only allowed three total shots on goal and only one in the first half of play where they built up a 13-0 lead at the half.

Conlon registered six points with two goals and four assists, Beal collected five points with four goals and one assist, Delfini finished with three goals, Vanessa Ray added a goal and two assists, Kelcie Wavra scored twice, and Fallon got on the board with two goals and an assist.

The Red Hawks are now off until next Tuesday, when they play host to the second-ranked team in the NJAC, The College of New Jersey, at Sprague Field at 7:00 p.m.

The Montclair State men’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three and improved to 4-5 with a road victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Mariners on Saturday by a score of 13-9.

Senior attack Tyler Meth had his fifth four-goal game of the season, leading the Red Hawks to victory.

Jack Skeels was another offensive force, scoring two goals and two assists. Defensemen Kiel Dietrich and Mike Lade stepped up to lead the defensive effort in the win. Dietrich forced three turnovers and picked up five ground balls while Lade forced two turnovers and picked up three ground balls. However, the big story from this game was the outstanding efforts from junior midfielder Kenneth Bogert, who set a new MSU single-game record with 11 ground balls while also scoring a goal and winning 15 face-offs.

The Red Hawks drew first blood by scoring their first two goals in the span of seven seconds. Freshman attack Michael Schreck netted the first goal just over two minutes into the game. Bogert won the ensuing face-off and took it to the cage for the game’s second goal. Skeels made it 3-0 three minutes later and senior midfielder Thomas Ring continued the opening run with an unassisted goal with six minutes left in the first quarter. Meth then tallied two more goals to cap the Red Hawks’ opening run at six. They would go into the second quarter leading 6-1.

The men’s lacrosse team fought back from a horrifying 0-4 start to increase their record to 4-5 with their recent three-game win streak. and managed to put three goals on the board to make the halftime score 8-4.

The Red Hawks came out flying in the third, scoring three of the first four goals in the quarter coming from Meth, Skeels and Joel Van Der Wal. The Mariners refused to relent as they rallied back to within three goals to go into the fourth quarter trailing 11-8. However, the Red Hawks were not to be denied, putting up two insurance goals in the

fourth while holding the Mariners to just one goal to hold on for a 13-9 win.

The Red Hawks outshot the Mariners 37-27 and dominated the face-off dot, winning 16 of 26 face-offs.

They remained strong while playing a man down, holding the Mariners to just three manup goals on eight opportunities.

Meth was named Skyline Conference player of the week for the second time this season. His

13 goals in the last three games have helped the Red Hawks build a three- game winning streak.

He is currently second in the Skyline in goals per game with 2.78 and third in points per game with 3.67.

He is currently tied for fourth on the all-time MSU goal-scoring list with 143 goals and ranks eighth on the list in points with 188. Coach Kivlen has been very vocal about the leadership of Meth and his seniors all season long.

MLB Regular Season Preview

American League predicted to win World Series in 2012 Jay Hrina Assistant Sports Editor

If the American League doesn’t win the World Series this year, something went horribly wrong. Arguably, the top five teams in Major League Baseball all belong in the American League.

The title for the best team on paper can be awarded to either the Detroit Tigers or the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. For the first time in a long time, it isn’t going to the New York Yankees. Detroit signed first baseman Prince Fielder to a nineyear, $214 million contract and the Angels went on a shopping spree, signing first baseman Albert Pujols to a ten-year, $250 million contract and starting pitcher C.J. Wilson to a five-year, $77.5 million contract.

The Yankees, whose biggest move was trading star prospect catcher Jesus Montero to Seattle for star prospect pitcher Michael Pineda.

Though they didn’t spend or improve much, the Yankees are still a powerful team guaranteed to make a serious run at the World Series.

The Mets, on the other hand, still look like they belong in The Sandlot, or maybe a more professional version of The Bad News Bears without all the beer throwing (that would be the Boston Red Sox).

The Mets aren’t the only National League team that looks weak; just about every team does.

The only teams worthy of being considered for the top ten overall are the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies. With Ryan Howard and Chase Utley out for an extended period of time and with aging Jimmy Rollins, the only thing keeping the Phillies afloat for this sea-

It is hard to discount a team when they have three and a half aces in their five-man rotation. The Giants are simply a solid team. Buster Posey returns for a full year and the Giants are hoping they can resurrect Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval. If things swing right, the Giants should be the top team (with the best record) at the end of the regular season.

The American League is where all the drama is going to take place. The American League East is stacked, again, with the Yankees, Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.

All of these teams have question marks: the Yankees with Alex Rodriguez and their pitching staff (as well as an aging lineup); the Red Sox are missing their closer and ace for an extended period of time and

have holes at shortstop, catcher and the outfield and the Rays have some flaws with a relatively weak batting lineup, but make up for it with an excellent, young pitching staff.

The American League Central and American League West will be the Tigers and Angels to lose, respectively.

Neither of these teams should be challenged much by division opponents. The only team that seems to be a pest are the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central. But with Joe Mauer returning from an injured season and Justin Morneau still experiencing concussion-like symptoms, it isn’t likely to see the Twins pestering anyone this season.

With all of that said, what is predicted to happen this season?

With another wildcard team added to this year’s playoff mix, two teams

will be competing in a one-game playoff; the winner of that game will represent their league in the playoffs as the wildcard team, the other team will have an early offseason. The four teams that will probably be playing for these are the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves in the National League and the Red Sox and Rays in the American League. Other teams that may squeak in are the Cleveland Indians or Kansas City Royals, though both teams are unlikely to be a threat.

Division leaders will be the Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Giants in the National League and the Yankees, Tigers and Angels in the American League.

From here, the potential World Series champion turns into a lottery, as any of these teams (specifically in the American League) have a chance at winning their conference.

Wildcats Win NCAA Tournament

Kentucky dominates Kansas in finals Corey Aron Staff Writer

The Kentucky Wildcats were in a league of their own throughout the entire National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. Kentucky is not only the most talented team in the nation, but also the one of the youngest, led by three freshman in their starting five lineup that included six-foot-ten-inches Associated Press Player of the Year, Anthony Davis.

He is only the second freshman to ever win the award, the other being Kevin Durant on the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the first ever player to win this award while playing for Kentucky.

Although Davis only made one field goal throughout the entire game, he still managed to compile 16 boards off the glass while also swatting six blocks, his strongest attribute towards his game. Did I mention he was also the game’s Most Valuable Player? I’m sure there will be talks of him possibly entering this year’s NBA draft.

Kentucky and Kansas happen to be the two winningest programs in college basketball and, surprisingly, this was the first time these two teams have met up to play in a national championship.

However, this wasn’t the first time that head coach Bill Self of the Kansas Jayhawks went face-toface competing for a national title against Kentucky’s head coach, John Calipari. On April 7, 2008, Calipari was coaching the Memphis Tigers for the time being and was defeated by Self’s Jayhawks in an overtime thriller with a score of 75-68.

The Kentucky Wildcats, lead by all-star freshman Anthony Davis, defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 67-59 on Monday night.

This go around went much differently while playing at a packed Mercedes-Benz SuperDome in New Orleans. Kentucky dominated the first half while leading by 14. Although Kansas happened to be down by 13 at the end of the first half during their Final Four game against Ohio State, they weren’t able to achieve another comeback.

Kansas, led by First Team AllAmerican Thomas Robinson, who had 18 points and 17 rebounds, helped managed to lead his team and go onto a 13-3 run, narrowing Kentucky’s margin to five points

with 1:37 remaining, but their efforts came up short, falling 67-59.

Kentucky now has eight national championships to add to their prestigious history. This was their first national championship win since 1998.

John Calipari never has to hear about the possibility of not winning in the big game because, after Monday’s game, he can finally say that he and his team got to cut down the net. Calipari states, “It’s not about me; it’s about these guys who went out to win this championship.” Lexington, Ky. will be rightfully celebrating this victory for days to come.

I also want to take the opportunity to commend the women’s basketball Oklahoma State team for ending a tragic season by winning the NIT Championship.

Their former head coach, Kurt Budke, along with three other members on the staff, died in a horrific plane crush four months ago that stunned the entire nation and deeply hurt the campus at Oklahoma State.

The fact that this team went on to play out the rest of their season and ended on a high note speaks volumes. This will forever be a truly remarkable story.

Should players be forced to play in college before turning pro?

I think it depends on the sport. A football player coming out of high school would need to go to college where he can get bigger and faster. A football player’s career can end on any play. Therefore, a college degree would mean much more to an NFL player. However, we have seen many basketball players forego college to have great careers, such as Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. We have also seen many soccer players, such as Freddy Adu and Wayne Rooney, turn pro and score their first goals at ages 14 and 16, respectively.

For sports like baseball where you don’t have to be in peak athletic form, by all means, go straight to the pros. That’s what the minor leagues are for, anyway. With football, you definitely have to attend college first so you can bulk up. An 18-year-old going straight to the pros will get injured in a heartbeat. For basketball, I feel that at least two years of college should be required so players can prove that they have what it takes. An education is obviously the most important, just in case one’s pro career doesn’t work out.

If a high school athlete chooses to go to go straight to the pros, they should be allowed to. The best decision they can (probably) make is to get a college degree because if professional sports don’t work out, they will have something to fall back on. Schools shouldn’t be handing out scholarship money to people who aren’t interested in getting an education, though these same people are generating tons of money for the university, so it seems justified from a business standpoint. Regardless, let the person do what he wants.

MSU on Fire, Winning Six Straight As the weather gets hotter, so do the Red Hawks Jeff Onorato Staff Writer

Montclair baseball took on Moravian College, played two games at Rutgers-Camden in their first New Jersey Athletic Conference games and welcomed Eastern Connecticut in their home opener—and they have plenty to cheer about.

It was neck-and-neck throughout the game when junior outfielder Anthony Bowens delivered a clutch two-RBI double in the top of the ninth in Montclair’s 8-7 victory over Moravian College last Thursday.

The Red Hawks posted a run in the first inning, but this lead would not be protected so easily.

Montclair put up a run in the second, fourth and fifth innings, two coming from the bat of catcher Jayson Stolz, only for the Moravian offense to match them.

The Greyhounds tied the game up at four in the sixth, but the Red Hawks regained their lead the next inning with a solo homer from third baseman Stephen Nappe. Moravian scored two more runs in the seventh, but their only lead in the game lasted until the eighth, when Montclair tied it 6-6.

Bowens entered the game at right field in the eighth, and his go-ahead double with runners on first and second was enough to win it for Montclair. Freshman Anthony Altieri retired the last three batters in a game started by Dylan Papa, who went five innings, allowing four runs.

MSU entered the double-header at Rutgers-Camden with a 9-7 record having won three straight and they couldn’t have asked for a better performance in their last game before their home opener.

In the first of the two-game set, pitcher Sean Hille was sent to the mound, giving up four runs in seven innings for his fourth win.

The Red Hawks were down 3-2 in the fifth before Kevin Bond, Nappe and Bowens each contributed RBI singles. The go-ahead run was Nappe’s second RBI of the game. Senior Jack McDonough threw two hitless innings to get the save in the 6-4 game.

With a 7-0 lead in the fifth, Montclair State had no thoughts about a tenth inning as game two against RutgersCamden turned out to be a closer one than anybody had thought. Nappe continued his impressive offense with a three-run blast in the third, and Cody Pace drove in three with a double for his first of two hits in the game.

The Red Hawk offense was absent in the sixth and seventh, but the Scarlet Raptors took the opportunity to score two runs in both, ultimately taking an 8-7 lead after a three-run eighth inning. Faced with their first deficit in the ninth, MSU made use of patience at the plate to avoid an upset.

Down to their last out, Nappe was walked intentionally after Bond doubled to put runners on first and second. Stolz worked a walk to load the bases for pinch hitter Lou Martini, who also watched four balls pitched out of the strike zone, tying the game 8-8. Another bases-loaded walk and a passed ball gave Montclair a 10-8 lead.

The two-run cushion was not soft enough as Rutgers-Camden responded with two runs to make the long day even longer.

The Red Hawk tenth saw their third bases-loaded walk and a twoRBI single from Martini to put them on top 13-10. Montclair’s bullpen was able to hold the lead in the tenth to cap off the double-header sweep.

Riding on a five-game win streak, the Red Hawks were looking better than ever going into the home opener against Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday. Papa started the game and retired the side in the first. Mickey McGraw led off the game with a single up the middle, but it would amount to no runs for Montclair.

The Red Hawks are currently on a six-game win streak, outscoring their opponents 50-28. gether a four-run second inning, but MSU kept it close, answering with three runs in the bottom half.

Catcher Scott Glozzy, Martini and Bowens crossed home on a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly by Pace and a base hit from Bond. A pair of double plays was of no help to the Red Hawks, who were unable to score again until late in the game.

With one out in the eighth, Martini and senior Sam Politan hit backto-back singles. With runners on first and second, Bowens cracked a double to left center field, sending both runners home. After a pitching change, Bowens scored on a double from Pace, giving Montclair a 6-4 lead going into the ninth.

pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn his third win.

The comeback victory extended the winning streak and improved the Red Hawks to 12-7 on the season.

MSU got off to a shaky start this season, but they are not looking back.

Bowens, who played a big part in the team’s recent success, said that practicing has really allowed them to “gel as a team.” Bowens and his teammates see the winning streak as a strong confidence builder to “keep the momentum going” as they move further into conference play.

Montclair takes on Ramapo College Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in their first match-up this season. The twogame set continues on Friday, when the Red Hawks host the Roadrunners at Yogi Berra Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

Softball Continues to Dominate NJAC

The Red Hawks continue to dominate their opposition with little worry. Montclair State University extended their win streak to eight games with 8-0 and 3-1 victories of New Jersey City University last week.

Their win streak started with 11-1 and 7-3 wins over Staten Island.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Hill increased her personal pitching record to 10-0 with seven strikeouts while allowing only three hits in four innings.

On offense, sophomore Dana Amato helped bring in three runs on two hits and fellow sophomore Katie Muglia recorded three runs on one hit. The key to MSU’s win over Staten Island was an outstanding nine-run, second inning. Junior pitcher Jamie Miller

increased her record to 7-1 when she held Staten Island to three points in the second game of the double-header.

The Red Hawks struggled against Richard Stockton, winning both games of the double-header 3-2 and 4-3. Hill became 11-0 with six strikeouts on four hits in the first game and then went 12-0 in the second game with another six strikeouts after Miller started the game with two strikeouts.

The Red Hawks were back in full form against NJCU thanks to a dominant offense and another superb pitching by Hill.

Amato went three-for-three on the day and sent in four runs while Hill drove in two and senior Shannon Mozek and junior Jamie Paulino both recorded one RBI. Once again, Hill owned the mound with another double-digit strikeout performance, retiring 11 batters while only allowing three hits.

In their 3-1 win, Miller was awarded her eighth win of the season by allowing one run on four hits. Amato, Hill, and sophomore Alisha Cumberton all drove in one run.

The Red Hawks are about halfway through the season and are performing better than they have in recent years. Currently 22-1 and tied for first place in the NJAC, the Red Hawks have easily proven that they are the team to beat. With excellent pitching and and explosive offense, there is not a single weak link in the MSU softball team.

The Red Hawks are scheduled to play The College of New Jersey on Friday at 3 pm and 4:30 pm. TCNJ is the other team in the NJAC that the Red Hawks are tied with so those two games will be very crucial to the NJAC standings. If either team can get the two-game sweep, they will gain a lot of momentum in the conference.
