Thefts on Campus Make Community Question Security Katie Winters Copy Editor
Thousands of dollars worth of equipment necessary to the education of Montclair State students was stolen this summer. Before classes even began, Calcia Hall suffered a large number of thefts including equipment from the photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry making studios as well as over $35,000 of equipment from the film department. All of these thefts are still under investigation. "There are a number of leads,” said Lieutenant Barrett regarding these thefts, which are under “full investigation.” The incidents in Calcia Hall are being treated as isolated because they were reported separately. However Lt. Barrett explained that this

Shock and heartache were felt throughout the campus of MSU last week as John Greco, head coach of the men’s lacrosse team, suddenly passed away. He was pronounced dead on Thursday, Nov. 4 due to a heart attack. Greco was 33 years old and leaves behind his wife, Karen. Mike Scala, director of Sports Information, was stunned to hear about the passing of Greco. It took him by surprise as he didn’t expect to hear it at all. “I was speechless,” said Scala. “It was difficult to comprehend. We [the program] had a very good relationship with him. I remembered how much effort he put into the program.

does not mean the crimes are not considered alongside each other. All of the incidents are being analyzed separately and together to find any patterns that may exist. The bigger question that these thefts raise is the caliber of security on campus. Besides Calcia Hall, offices in Morehead Hall were burglarized this summer and construction materials were stolen. To complicate the possible problem of security, most academic buildings are left open 24/7, with no cameras and nothing but locks on the door to deter possible thieves. While some buildings have alarm systems, automatically locking doors or cameras, Calcia is left unlocked. “I pay just as much as people in other departments and honestly I expect the same measure of security here as in

Student organizations observed The Great American Smokeout yesterday and provided the campus community with a poster contest and personal one-on-one quitting consultations. The event challenged smokers to go one day without smoking and offered a support system through various organizations. This year students volunteered to wear t-shirts that read, “1200 People Die Each Day From Tobacco.” Large paper cigarettes and chalk figures with statistics were seen throughout campus. Despite the efforts of Campus Recreation, Center for Student Involvement, Center for Nonviolence, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Promotion, LGBT Center, MSU Marketing Association, Relay for Life of MSU, Residential Education and Servic-
