Emmy-award-winning news anchor, Brenda Blackmon was honored on Friday by MSU's Broadcasting Department with the 2010 Allen B. Dumont Broadcaster of the Year Award.

Celebrating her 20th year with My9, Blackmon has reported on major current events, inculding coverage of 9/11 and the 2008 Presidential inaugurations. She also reported on the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005.

Along with being heralded as a key figure in the news, Blackmon said that her other four jobs include being a mom, running a non-profit organization, teaching at Fairleigh Dickinson University and running the corporation Brenda Black Communications. She joked, “I got four jobs 'mon.' I don't have 15 but I got four.”

Though she has interviewed many well-known figures, the Columbus, Ga. native's path to fame has been anything but simple.

Often described as a pioneer in her field, Blackmon said, “When I started out on television [in 1973], there was Blackmon Continued on Page 5

were supposed to open up at 7:30 p.m.; however, they didn’t begin to let people in until about 8:30 p.m.,� said Aisha Salaam, a junior. “I waited in line for about an hour and fifteen minutes. There wasn’t a really long line while I was waiting, but I think that people were just annoyed at the fact that they weren’t allowed entry until about 8:30.�

Security at the entrance was thorough. Lieutenant Barrett said, “Security checks were extensive including bag checks and metal detector.�

The concert had a great turn out.

According to Chris Goscinski, SGA president, over 600 people attended the concert. “The second people came in, they went to the front for [DJ Kast One].

People were standing on chairs and in the aisles and never went back to their

homecoming events during the past four years.

Jasmin Harden, a senior, said, “I wouldn’t have made any changes to the concert. I think that each artist had an even amount of time to perform. Overall I would rate the concert a 9 [out of 10].�

Salaam and her friends agreed. “I believe that the concert was worth the wait. I never saw such a performance brought to Montclair like this one,� said Salaam. “I believe that this concert brought MSU to a completely different level, and for once students were posting on their social network accounts that they love their school. I believe that such events should happen more often to promote school pride, and also encourage students to stay on the weekends,� said Salaam.

Though entering the auditorium took some time, senior Alyssa DeSilva felt, "The wait was well worth [it]. I was first skeptical if Fabolous was actually going to perform because of the Nicki Manaj scam, but he really put on a good show."

DJ Kast One opened the show with many popular tracks in what DeSilva explained as a performance “that helped get the crowd ready for Fabolous' performance."

It was a really good event for homecoming weekend and MSU should continue to plan concerts for homecoming," said DeSilva.

Because Fabolous has been performing for a longer time than Minaj, Harden said, "I dont think that Nicki Minaj would have gotten the same feedback from the crowd as Fabolous did."

Promenade Project Nears Completion

Montclair State University is scheduled to complete its College Avenue Promenade project, which repaved and expanded the pedestrian walkway between Normal Avenue and the Red Hawk Deck, within the next few weeks.

“There’s been a lot of construction and updates in the last year,” said Dr. Karen Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life. “These are continual improvements. The university is over 100 years old. When things are old they need to be changed.”

The project, started on May 5, includes putting in new landscaping, lighting, road curbing, sidewalks and site utilities work.

The reconstruction of the historic quad area between Chapin, Freeman and Russ Hall is also included in the project. These are considered historic areas, since the buildings date back to the early 20th century. Russ Hall, one

of the oldest buildings on campus, was built in 1915.

“The students will be able to see a much more beautiful entrance to the campus,” said Pennington. “It’s something very welcoming and inviting. It should make the students more proud to be at MSU.” Students will also witness the return of the George Segal “people” statues that stood outside Kasser Theater.

The statues will now be located across from College Avenue next to College Hall.

A new drop off area has been added

by Panzer Gymnasium, as a way to decrease traffic congestion.

“This is a great project,” said Pennington. “The students will be very happy when it’s completed.”

"I think the completed project, as projected on the university website, will be absolutely outstanding,” said Christopher McLean, double major in political science and business finance.

“It looks great and aesthetically pleasing. Not having to take detours and step in dirt constantly when going by the Promenade is priceless."

The Promenade project will extend to Freeman Hall, Russ Hall and the Cali School of Music.

Construction on Finley Hall Gives Linguistics and Foreign Languages a New Home Peter Grabowski Staff Writer

While the complete renovation of Finley Hall has been on the University’s “to-do” list for years, construction on the new linguistics and foreign language building is underway.

Finley Hall is “undergoing a life cycle restoration/renovation of its two floors with a third floor being added” wrote Gregory Bressler, vice president of university facilities in an e-mail last Thursday.

The new Finley hall will be have 17 instruction rooms, 83 offices, as well as rooms for storage, filing and conferences. The building will be home to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) programs of linguistics and foreign languages, which will create more room in classrooms and offices in Dickson Hall where the courses are currently being taught.

The building has been under periodic construction for several years. Bressler said the addition of a third floor is the reason for the delay.

He feels that this time of the year is, “favorable [for building] in the sense of very few construction projects causing extremely competitive pricing from construction contractors and materials suppliers.”

The state of New Jersey is not providing funds for this construction project. State funding currently accounts for less than 20 percent of the operating budget, compared with the 60 percent contribution the University has received in past years, according to President Susan Cole.

The new Finley Hall will not be constructed in the same way as The Heights, which uses a pre-molded concrete for the façade. “Finley Hall will have an EFIS (exterior wall) system for its exterior facade. This is similar to the exterior facades of the addition to Chapin Hall and Sinatra Hall,” said Bressler. The architects of the project are from Environetics, and the contractors are with Century 21.

Finley Hal, originally built in 1957, held 37,000 square feet of interior space. Once the third floor is added, the building will have a total of 52,7000 square feet of interior space.

no one to teach me 'how to.' […] There weren't any colored girls to look up to, that's for sure.”

Beginning her career in television in 1973 as a wide-eyed dreamer who claims to have received a lot of “onjob training,” Blackmon made her way to the tri-state area,where she would eventually report on Ground-Zero.

This was notably one of the hardest moments of her career, second to going on air after the loss of co-worker and colleague, Reggie Harris in 2000.

“Losing a colleague and not finding out until you come into work is the hardest thing,” said Blackmon. “I told Earnie [Anastos] 'I can't do this' and he said 'Yes you can, you have to.'”

“You don't get to cry because you have to be strong for other people. As a journalist, you have to take care of your listeners, your viewers,” said Blackmon.

Broadcasting student Kendall Zoppa said, “It was inspiring hearing her story about starting out small and working her way up, learning everything as she went. [Her appearance] was important because it showed all of us hopefuls that with hard work and persistence we can be equally successful.”

Blackmon has been catering to special needs that “hit home” for her since

her daughter, Kelly, was diagnosed with Lupus in 1999. Kelly Blackmon's health deteriorated, bringing her to the cusps of death in 2007.

“I literally said 'OK God, take my life, you can let her live,'” said Blackmon. “When he let me live too I said, 'OK maybe there's got to be a reason why I'm here.'”

“God is good, and overnight she opened her eyes and made it through.

[She went from] a wheelchair, walker and cane. Now she's fine and aggravating her mother everyday,” Blackmon joked.

Since then, Blackmon has started the Kelly Fund for Lupus Inc., an organization that donates a majority of its proceeds to Alliance for Lupus Research.

Jenai Copeland, broadcasting student, said, “Initially, I was hesitant to attend the award reception so early in the morning on my only day off from classes. However, immediately I was captivated by Ms. Brenda Blackmon's pleasant demeanor and charm. She is truly an inspiration, especially to minority females like myself.”

The feeling was mutual as Blackmon said, “I love you as students, you keep me young.”

Students Participate in Anti-Bullying Panel Taking care of her listeners and viewers has been Blackmon's primary concern since the tragedy of Rutgers student, Tyler Clementi's suicide.

My9 aired a special called, “Stop The Bullying -Tyler Clementi- Never Again” this past weekend. Blackmon believes cyber bullying is becoming a major problem.

“Whenever there is an important issue, we try to bring it to the forefront. We do try to do our part,” said Blackmon.

The special included a panel discussion of students in college and high school who have experienced cyber-bullying first hand or witnessed it occurring to others.

MSU broadcasting students, August Paule and Kristin Chapman were in attendance.

A gay student who said he has

“come out of the closet,” Paule felt that the death of Clementi had “hit home,” especially because Paule is from Piscataway.

Paule explained, “a lot of people are self-conscious and [those bullying] don't understand the person on the receiving end.”

A Community Assistant, Chapman has been working hard to implement programs that raise awareness of this issue as well as open up discussion.

“It's almost easier to remove the guilt from [what you're saying],” said Chapman. “You can just type words because you're not saying it to [someone's] face. [Bullies] can just put it out there with no limits.”

The Arctic in a Warmer World

Many of us take global warming for granted. Bob Reiss will share his expertise and personal experiences on what to do about our current huge contributions to greenhouse gases that are warming the Earth and making our weather more dangerous.

Mr. Reiss is a bestselling New York based author and journalist, a former Chicago Tribune reporter and former correspondent for Outside Magazine. His work has also appeared in Washington Post Magazine, Smithsonian, Parade, Rolling Stone and other national publications. Non-fiction books written by Mr. Reiss include The Coming Storm, which warned of the possibility of extreme weather resulting from global warming, was a serious wake up call.

The Road To Extrema described the state and fate of the Amazon rainforest. Mr. Reiss has published 14 additional novels including Black Monday, The Last Spy, and The Side Effect.

Amie MacMath, program assistant for the LGBT Center, opened up the ceremony.

Before raising the flag, MacMath asked everyone to “take a moment of silence for those lost or hurt from hate” in the LGBT community. The six LGBT youth who took their lives this past month were especially remembered in the moment of silence.

MacMath gave an inspirational speech about the LGBT community not being silent in the face of adversity.

She spoke about how she wants the LGBT community to “show the world how strong and resilient” they are, and in doing so, not be silenced.

Dr. Susan A. Cole, president of Montclair State University, also attended the flag raising ceremony. Cole wants to use this week to not only to “erase misconceptions through heightening awareness” but to also “celebrate the many contributions that the LGBT community has done.”

Cole proceeded to read a proclamation that stated Oct. 11 was National Coming Out Day and asked the Montclair State campus community to join the LGBT Center and its allies in celebrating for the remainder of the week.

The LGBT Center asked one of its allies, Dr. Bryan Terry, associate vice president for enrollment and student academic services, to speak out about his experiences and involvement with the Center. Terry stated that he “grew from meetings with LGBT students more than any other time in his career.”

“If you’re not an ally, what are you waiting for?” Terry asked. An ally is someone that supports those in the LGBT community and works with the

LGBT Center.

A project Terry is working on with the LGBT Center is to try and get a “different” choice on the Montclair State application, as opposed to just “male” and “female.” Terry stated, “I got involved in higher education to help students,” which he does directly through his work with the Center.

Dr. Raul Galoppe, associate professor of Spanish and Italian, informed the crowd about the GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) minor.

Galoppe helped start this minor about four years ago at a time when only 30 schools offered the minor.

The GLBTQ minor affirms Montclair State’s position of tolerance and respect towards LGBT students, faculty and staff. “It is very important for our community,” Galoppe stated.

Galoppe believes that offering the minor creates a comfortable learning environment and promotes more research on sexual diversity.

Sergeant Kenny Svolto of the Army and National Guard showed his support for the LGBT Center. Svolto was in the army for four years, and has been in the National Guard for the past two years. “Be who you are,” Svolto said.

The ceremony closed with words spoken by student Kory Turner. “I am a proud African American, gay Christian,” Turner said. He has been through experiences that “hurt him, but formed who he is.” Turner sang a hymn called, “I Need You to Survive.”

The ceremony came to a close after Esmilda Abreu, director of equity and diversity, made a statement. She invited everyone back to the Student Center for a movie viewing and said of LGBT students, “This is a very beautiful community.”

The LGBT Center is open to anyone who seeks its services. It is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located in the Student Center on the 4th floor, room 423.

'Proud to Be' Buttons Show Students Colors

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Center continued to be heard on the University’s campus as they hosted the “Proud to Be” table inside the Student Center on Oct. 12.

From 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The LGBT Center handed out buttons as a part of the National Coming Out Week celebration.

“The LGBT Center’s goal for the table today is to allow students, faculty and staff to be authentically who they are,” said Amie MacMath, program assistant for the LGBT Center, Equity and Diversity. “As a celebration of coming out week, these buttons are an opportunity for individuals to come out as LGBT, as an ally or simply as a person who is proud to be themselves.”

Over 200 buttons were handed out during the four hours. The buttons said “proud to be…” on them and students were able to fill in whatever they wished. Health Promotion donated the

use of their button maker to the LGBT Center for the event.

This is the first time the LGBT Center has sponsored this event.

“We are very happy with the response from the community,” said MacMath. “We hope to continue it in the future.”

The project was cosponsored by the LGBT Center, SPECTRUMS and the Office of Health Promotion.

“I was walking by and saw the proud to be pins and wanted to show that I’m proud to be as well,” said Jahkahli Johnson, business management major. “No one deserves to be segregated against, we are all individuals. The world would be a very dull place if we were all the same. My brotherhood Iota Phi Theta was created in the midst of the civil rights movement, so I know about segregation and prejudices.”

“I was sitting here for the HRLDA breast cancer walk in Newark and saw everyone making these buttons,” said Marketta McPherson, political science major. “They had a huge crowd.”

What’s in Your Makeup?

It is true in today’s society that both young women and men, of all ages, are dabbling in the art of makeup, which was the case even long ago. Every year there are different trends and styles to imitate. Whether it is emulating celebrities’ signature looks, or sporting a creative look of your own, one thing is certain: make-up has a history and a derived meaning that may never change.

This fall the top beauty magazines, such as Allure, Elle, In Style and Glamour, are instructing their followers on how to be in tune with the top beauty trends and tips.

First, let’s start with the windows to the soul: the eyes. A continuation of dark outlining of the eyes, like the Egyptians did in 3500 BCE, has reappeared. The Egyptians wore dramatic eye makeup because they believed that looking and smelling good would appease their sun god, Ra. It was also used to protect their eyes from the harsh sun. The Egyptians used black kohl, lead ore and copper to outline their eyes, creating the illusion of an almond shape.

In America we don’t have to deal with the hot desert sun, but instead we practice celebrity adoration to emulate the winged cat eye with small variations such as the smoky look and blending as instructed by beauty articles.

Another trend to look out for this fall is green eyeshadow and liner. On the runways it has been used to color the lid all the way up to the brow bone and to line under the eyes. The Assyrians also did this using green paint. Other shadows such as copper, blues and shades of purple are making their way back onto the shelves.

Right below the eyes are the next makeup spot: the apples of your cheeks.

A tip that is usually pointed out to give women a healthy and youthful appearance is to use pink blush, which coincidentally is “in” this fall. However, the origin of this step in putting on one’s “face” may make you put down that fluffy brush, and indeed blush. In the Middle Ages prostitutes were known to wear pink blush. Of course, choosing to wear blush doesn’t mean that you are a

prostitute by today’s standards.

On the other hand though, a 35-yearold Indonesian woman was arrested in 2006 because her makeup gave the impression and sufficient proof to police that she was a prostitute. That may seem outlandish, but many people still hold on to the traditional origins of why trends started, regardless of the evolution.

Makeup is used to beautify one’s self and create a fresh look, but it is also used to attract the opposite sex. This last reason was the main one why prostitutes utilized blush to create a visual fantasy, to mesmerize and seduce both married and single men. This brings us to the last part of the face, the lips.

Some colors that are promoted in lipstick this season are berry, wine, plum shades, red, red and more red! The red lip is always a strong statement that originated with the Romans, and was circulated amongst the prostitutes, initially. Red lipstick was said to indicate readiness to perform oral talents and to mirror the sexual flush that the labia has when aroused.

During the 1920s, red lipstick was a marked look to exhibit freedom and adult sexuality. Other colors, such as

wine and berry for this year are yet another style tip that we have borrowed from a creative, but fallen, civilization — the Egyptians.

They would extract red and purple pigments from seaweed in combination with bromine, to get the same effect.

Unfortunately, this led to the spread of diseases (hence the term, “the kiss of death”).

To finish off the face, powder can be lightly dusted to add a finishing touch.

Nowadays we often choose a shade that is close to our skin complexion but, in earlier times a white powder depicted wealth and status. In Europe it was used to hide illnesses. During the Victorian era, a time when makeup was not common, some would even drink vinegar to attain a pale complexion.

People would also avoid the sun. This was because dark skin was linked to

working outdoors, and so those of the lower class were often exposed to sunlight, and had darker skin.

With all this in mind, let us take into consideration that Americans contribute a little over seven billion dollars a year to the multi-billion dollar cosmetic industry. Where do we draw the line?

Makeup can be looked at as an extension of fashion, a creative expression or an illusion to conceal natural beauty.

We don’t need a magnetized compact mirror to see the large influence that previous cultures still have in current society. But what is it about makeup that makes us spend so much? If we can understand the history behind the art of illusion that is painted on the face, perhaps we may be able to realize the connection between beauty, acceptance, society and self.

Ferrofluids Take Shape at MSU Scott Buchanan Staff Writer

Imagine a mug of your morning coffee — black and greasy. Now imagine passing a magnet underneath your mug and watching the coffee transform from a predictable and stable fluid into a symmetrical array of perfectly formed convex spikes.

Sound like a scene from a bad science fiction thriller? Not to Matthew Vieira, a graduate student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Vieira studies the physical properties of ferrofluids — oil based liquids that have nanoscale (really, really small) ground-up bits of iron in suspension. Contained in a non-descript plastic bottle in Vieira’s lab, the stuff does not immediately appear exceptional in any way.

It resembles motor oil, dark and viscous. But expose a ferrofluid to a magnetic field, and its extraordinary properties jump right out at you — literally.

“It’s fascinating,” said Vieira with genuine excitement.

The small, uniform spikes that spontaneously emerge from the fluid as Vieira passes a magnet under a small sample in a plastic dish are known as normal-field instabilities, affectionately known as the “hedgehog pattern” among scientists. What is often assumed to be a state-of-theart substance to the first time observer, was actually first developed in

the 1960s for use in the space program.

And while ferrofluids have been well studied since their invention, there remain many questions as to certain properties — questions that Vieira and his colleagues in the Mathematical Sciences Department have been hard at work trying to answer.

Under the tutelage of Dr. Phil Yecko and Dr. David Trubatch, Vieira has twice traveled to Argonne National Laboratory, about 25 miles southwest

of Chicago, to study ferrofluids using the laboratory’s advanced x-ray and video equipment. By dropping tiny glass beads through a medium of ferrofluid, it is possible for Vieira to estimate (with the aid of ultra fast video equipment) the velocity at which the beads make their way through the fluid. Testing showed that as a magnetic field was applied around the ferrofluid, the viscosity (or resistance to movement) increased.

“We noticed that as we turned up the magnetic field, the balls were falling slower through the ferrofluid,” said Vieira. “We’ve since gone back to the Argonne Lab and tried to repeat the experiment, only this time changing the angle of the applied field.”

By varying the strength and direction of the magnetic field and gauging viscosity by measuring the time it takes the glass beads to drop through the frame of the camera, Vieira hopes to model the properties that the ferrofluid exhibits. Vieira hopes that advancements in understanding exactly how this rather unconventional substance works could help lead to new applications in engineering and medicine.

One theoretical use of ferrofluids is the site-specific delivery of drugs within the body. If a way can be found to bind certain medicines (e.g. antibiotics, cancer drugs) to ferrofluids, the potential may exist to direct the drugs exactly where they need to be using magnets. This could greatly increase the efficiency and effectiveness with which certain drugs are administered.

While researchers continue to describe ferrofluids and look for exciting new ways with which to use them, one thing remains certain — the unique properties they display will continue to provoke wonder in all that observe them.

How to Stay Safe on a College Campus Jade Moskovitz Staff Writer

It’s easy to hear a story on the news or from a friend and think, “Well, that’s never going to happen to me.”

But the truth is, your chances are the same as any one of those victims mentioned in the news. So how do you stay safe?

I would like to think that everyone has taken, or is planning to take, a self-defense course. But I don’t know many people who have, so that’s probably not the case.

However, even if you’re aware of how to defend yourself it doesn’t mean it’s going to be the answer to all your problems. You might have to use common sense in order to avoid contact with an assailant. For some tips on self defense moves, watch Miss Congeniality.

Luckily, Montclair is a safe campus that has 24-hour police patrols and well-lit areas, but you should be prepared to take things into your own hands.

It’s far easier to prevent yourself from becoming a victim than to face an offender.

One way to protect yourself is to try to stay in the company of someone you

know when walking alone at night. If you don’t have anyone with you, try to stay off your cell phone. It’s a distraction that could cost you a lot more than a missed call.

Always be aware of your surroundings. Intuition is a huge part of staying out of trouble. Sometimes we hear or see things that allow us to recognize danger before we’re a part of it. Being on your phone actually distracts you from your surroundings and causes you to be more vulnerable to attack.

Check in with a friend and let them know your plans and where you’re going to be during the day or night, so that someone is aware of your schedule.

If you are a commuter or someone who keeps your car on campus, try to park in a well-lit area so that you are more likely to be seen and helped, if someone were to attack you after returning from a night class.

After all, who would want to assault someone in a busy area that would increase their chances of getting caught? After parking your car always check that your car is locked and your dorm room as well, if you live on campus. Some things may sound like common sense, but they are often forgotten when rushing to class.

Homecoming Queen Crowned Jade Moskovitz Staff Writer

And this year’s 2010 homecoming queen is “ERIN KEENAN!” Having made a promise with runner-up Farid Oyelaja their freshman year, Keenan was destined to take home the crown.

With the desire to support and promote the Student Recreation Center, Keenan took this opportunity to show how much the center contributes to our campus. Taking the win for a second year, the queen has used her recognition as a way to thank the Student Recreation Center and Recreation Board for everything they provide and do for the student body.

As homecoming queen, Keenan was able to reach out to new faces around campus and shed light upon the organization. A senior physical education and health major, the homecoming queen title not only promotes her in a positive light but shows her qualities of leadership for future reference.

After all the help from her fans and weeks of promotion, preparation and practice, Keenan sends a “thank you,” to all of her supporters, “who not only voted for [her] but took the time to listen and vote for all the candidates involved.”

Keenan stresses how important it is to get involved on campus and is proud to be crowned Montclair State University’s 2010 homecoming queen.

The Leaves are Changing but are You? James Carpentier Staff Writer

Stop where you are. Are you outside?

Are you near a window? Look around you, MSU students, faculty and campus staff! Do you see any crimson-colored, golden yellow, spectacular scarlet or orange leaves that have fallen to the ground? Do you see any that are still on the trees, glistening in the autumn sunlight? Or are there mostly green or brown leaves from your vantage point?

Maybe those green leaves will never turn a different shade this fall and will instead be blown off trees by a gusty wind or rainstorm. And pity those brown leaves that dried out during this past summer’s scorching heat and limited rain, and never had a chance to turn a brilliant color this fall.

Well now, are you like that stubborn green leaf that refuses to turn a different shade — one who never changes to make improvements in your way of existence? It’s never too late. Or are you like the withered brown leaf that prematurely fell to the ground and gave in or waved the white flag — passively accepting your fate, afraid to change or take risks? Here are some ways to “turn a different leaf� this fall and make a difference, not only making you a better person, but also making a difference in those around you. And don’t wait until autumn is through and that last leaf has fallen! Start showing your true “colors� now and don’t be afraid to change yourself, as there’s room for advancement in everyone.

• Become a better listener — hear what the other person has to say before jumping in the middle of their sentence. You’ll make an optimal conversationalist and become more interested about others rather than using “Iâ€? and “meâ€? all the time. • Make someone happy. Hear what longtime actor Ernest Borgnine stated in the recent Oct. 10 issue of The StarLedger (he’s 93 and is appearing in an upcoming movie Red starting Oct. 15 starring Bruce Willis): “You know, my mother used to say, if you can make one person happy in the span of 24 hours, you’ve accomplished a great deal. And I’ve been trying to do that ever since, in my own little crazy way.â€? • Stop rushing, slow down. Plan ahead each day and don’t procrastinate or you’ll end up doing things at the last minute and rushing to get the job done.

Haste makes waste, as the adage goes.

This fall, stop a few minutes around the MSU campus each day and admire the changing leaves, for instance, and delightful crisp weather. Before you

know it, the colorful leaves will be off the trees and wintry weather will arrive. • Take stock in your health!

Start walking more and driving less to your on or off-campus destinations. Get your doctor’s OK to start an exercise program. Make water your primary beverage and eliminate sugary soda.

Consume more fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other foods in their natural state rather than the processed versions (i.e. cake, cookies and candy).

Make an effort to regularly get at least eight hours of sleep for peak physical and mental performance. • Don’t lose your cool! If something doesn’t go as planned, step back, take a deep breath and reassess the situation. Your blood pressure will lower as well. If you’re an MSU athlete, don’t let your teammates or coaches down by arguing or losing your temper and getting a costly penalty. And if you’re a non-athlete, be cool, calm and collected as well — “cooler heads will prevailâ€? as someone once said. • Be a giver rather than a taker.

Stop being selfish and become more altruistic. Occasionally volunteer your skills and talents rather than be a selfserver. Who was it that said “It’s better to give than receive?â€? Move over egotists and make room for you — a care giver. • Take chances and don’t be afraid of failure. Are you resting on your laurels and past success? Are you afraid or too lazy to get creative or embark on something challenging for

fear of failing or embarrassment? Then you’re just like the aforementioned green leaf that never changed color this fall and just stayed the same drab shade. Or, if you don’t take chances or get creative, you’ll be like that dried up brown leaf with the dead personality.

Think in terms of the axiom “nothing ventured, nothing gained.�

So, as the seasons change and come and go, you too can change for the better. Some of you may traditionally wait until New Year’s Day, in less than three months, to make resolutions, positive personality changes and/or a healthier lifestyle. Why wait? Get in sync with nature and make those lifestyle changes now as the leaves are changing! After all, eyes will admire those bright colorful leaves each fall over the shriveled brown ones — just as many are attracted to a “colorful� personality compared to a dull or boring one.

One Professor’s Quest to Save Breasts Amanda Balbi Feature Editor

Montclair State University Professor Fernando Uribe has been organizing Breast Cancer Awareness events for the past four years.

It all started when he volunteered at the American Cancer Society. It made him want to “generate more revenue” for the ACS, he said. Then he started walking for the cause.

Uribe walked for Breast Cancer for the past six years. He felt that it was beneficial to show support and raise awareness.

However, he realized that it wasn’t enough to just show support; he wanted to help spread the word about the devistating disease that could take women’s and men’s lives.

Men have died from breast cancer as well. The number is significantly lower than women’s deaths, however, it is possible.

“Men [constitute] a small percentage, but it has increased in recent years,” Uribe said.

His next event is taking place on Saturday Oct.16 at 8 p.m. at Bahama Mama’s in Hoboken.

Saturday will include a date auction with “beautiful ladies [who] will be available for a date to the highest bidder,” Uribe said in his email to the MSU community. It also will include a spa auction.

This year, Uribe wanted to try a different approach to get everyone’s attention. He invited over 1,500 people to his event on Saturday by using Facebook.

to his local community.

He anticipates this year will bring more donations and more patrons than years past. He said he’s had an average of 60 people in the past who have donated about $2,000 per year.

“It’s been consistant,” Uribe said, but he hopes that the date and spa auctions will attract more people.

At Bahama Mama’s, Uribe will have a table where he will hand out brochures, wristbands and other information about breast cancer.

Most of the products he will be distributing were donated by the American Cancer Society, which helped him organize the event.

There will also be a donation box, where patrons can donate any denomination of money along with the other proceeds from the auctions.

The date auction will include five women, all profiled on Uribe’s event page via Facebook. He’s also holding a spa auction, which will include spa packages from local places in Hoboken.

The greatest thing about the event is there will be drink specials and no cover charge. There will be $1, $2 and $4 drinks. A variety of beer and frozen drinks will be on the menu.

In case patrons do drink, the bar is located within walking distance of the train station. There is also a taxi service available.

So far, there are 135 people attending, according to Facebook. It will be a “beneficial evening overall,” Uribe said.

The Archbishop John J. Myers Lecture Series sponsored by the Newman Catholic Church kicked off Wednesday evening on the seventh floor of University Hall. In the spirit of Halloween, exorcist and Archbishop Vincent Lampert came to talk to the hundreds of students and staff that attended the event.

“So, do I look like an exorcist?” said Lampert to loosen up the room’s anticipation for such an interesting topic of disccusion.

He discussed how there are 24 official exorcists appointed throughout the country. Today most people are getting their information about exorcisms through the Internet and television.

Satanism and magic practices that go along with this belief, such as fortune telling and witchcraft often consume a person so they believe they are surrounded by evil. However, Lampert said that 50 percent of people who believe they are haunted by some spiritual force are actually suffering from a mental illness instead.

Lampert’s goal is for young people to become fascinated with God instead of being caught up in the “evil” presented in life. People inside and outside of churches doubt if exorcisms are still needed in order to dispel bad spirits. Lampert said, “There are realities that we cannot precieve,”and continues his notion with explaining how demon spirits were created from angels that “fell from the earth.”

Evil spirits possess human bodies in order to bring out emotions in us such as despair, lust and anguish. They each have their own specialties they carry out on their targets and attack the individual when they are at their weakest point.

So what is Lampert’s advice on how to be protected by evil forces? “Stand right with God,” he said.

Lampert revealed that at least one of these qualities must be displayed in order for a person to be considered possessed.

1. The ability to understand and speak languages previously unknown to the individual.

2. The ability to exhibit extraordinary strength.

3. The individual gains elevated perception with knowledge unknown to them prior.

4. Has a strong resistance against divine influences such as Holy water.

Lampert further answers the big question: Why do we become possessed?

“The devil wants to mimic God by taking on human form,” said Lampert. He explained how there are three levels of possessed individuals: 1. Oppression- Physical attacks and markings that appear on the body.

2. Obsession- Mind is possessed and causes an inability to focus because their thoughts are not their own.

3. Possession- Demon takes temporary control of the person’s body, putting them into a “trance-like” state. From there, the “evil” will begin to manifest from the individual.

Homecoming “Success?”

F

rom Nicki Minaj, to Fabolous and Miguel, this year’s homecoming was the most renowned in recent MSU history (music news sources such as MTV and Billboard reported the scam).

With all the buzz leading up to this year’s homecoming concert, all of us here at The Montclarion wonder if the saying rings true: Is any publicity truly

good publicity?

Let’s take a look at ticket sales.

The capacity for Memorial Auditorium (where the concert took place, just in case you didn’t know… which is probably the case) is about 900.

When the Nicki Minaj concert tickets went on sale, students scrambled for tickets.

They were sold out by the next day.

For the Fabolous concert, the SGA was unable to provide an accurate headcount of attendees as of press time.

We do know the concert was not a sell-out, our sources tell us the auditorium was a little more than half full.

A rough estimate suggests that 500-600 people attended the concert.

The concert’s attendance dropped by almost half, and on top of that, the SGA ulti-

mately paid double what they were supposed to because of the phony agency.

To call this a complete success, frankly, would be false.

The drop in attendance was not necessarily caused by the different acts booked.

Fabolous did generate a lot of chatter and excitement among the student body.

We believe a major factor was the students’ reluctance about purchasing another ticket.

If you were on the line for Minaj tickets all night long, we’re sure you know what we’re talking about.

These students waited and paid for tickets, only to get let down.

Who is going to blame them for not waiting on line a second time?

When refunds were being offered, many students took their money and ran, and rightfully so.

For other students it was the bother of going on line and waiting for tickets yet again.

The homecoming performance become more of a hassle than an object of excitement.

Once that trust is broken between the establishment and consumer, there are certain consequences.

And although the SGA got the job done very quickly in booking a new act, they suffered the consequence; the students’ interest simply faded.

After all, Fabolous is not on the same level of notoriety as Nicki Minaj is.

But the concert wasn’t the only event this homecoming weekend.

The annual homecoming football game is the most attended sporting event every year on campus.

During this year’s homecoming, Sports Information had the headcount at about

6,100, down from last year’s 6,337.

It’s not much of a difference, plus our opponent this year was TCNJ, whose fans have to travel all the way from Ewing.

Last year, MSU faced William Paterson, a much more convenient trip for fans that travel with the team.

This may explain the small decrease.

Although the homecoming festivities would have benefited from a higher attendance, we are still Montclair State University, a commuter school whose residents are mostly suitcase students.

Regardless, most of the student body comes to campus for classes, and then goes straight home.

Eliciting a big crowd for anything is a difficult task and we have learned to keep our expectations to a minimum.

Nevertheless, the SGA had their sold out concert, then lost it.

The people that went to homecoming enjoyed themselves; there just wasn’t as big a turn out as expected.

We are left wondering if any publicity is good publicity.

Our verdict? No, we really don’t think that is always true. At least not in this case, anyway.

So remember Montclair students, be sure to enjoy your time here on campus, but keep in mind that your time is limited, and when something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Freeman Caught in a Dining Equilibrium Student Highlights the Circular Reasoning Behind Freeman’s Dining Services

reeman Dining Hall isn’t open as much as Blanton Dining Hall because not as many students eat at Freeman. Not as many people eat at Freeman Katie Winters because there Copy Editor isn’t anything special there.

There isn’t anything special at Freeman because not as many people eat there. Not as many people eat there because it’s never open.

Freeman isn’t open because not as many students eat there. Not many students eat there because it is farther away from most of the dorms.

The students that live in Freeman and Russ go to Blanton because it is open more and has more of a selection. Blanton dining hall has more selection because more students go there. More students go there because it is closer, and because it is open more often. Blanton is open more often because more students go there.

Freeman is closed early on the weekends

because fewer students eat at Freeman.

Fewer students eat at Freeman because it has a history of having lower-quality food.

The food is low-quality because not many students eat there. Not many students eat there because the food isn’t good and it’s always closed.

Freeman closes early on the weekend because fewer students utilize it. Do you see the cycle?

We can’t just keep saying that Freeman Dining Hall shouldn’t be open as much as Blanton because there is a “low demand” for it to be open, because of the simple fact that it isn’t and has never been, at least over the last four years, open as long as Blanton creates this “low demand.”

Furthermore, this supposed “low demand” influences what is offered at Freeman, and it isn’t anything special and there is certainly less of a selection.

While obviously there is less space in Freeman to offer more food or cool features, this does make students prefer Blanton.

Overall, we’ve given all the cards to Blanton and left Freeman nothing to offer students except proximity to a smaller group of students.

There is no reason for the students who live in Bohn, Blanton, Webster or Stone to come eat at Freeman.

For that matter, there isn’t much reason for residents of the Village, Hawk Crossings

or Sinatra to eat at Freeman either. And there isn’t too much reason commuters would want to eat at Freeman.

Furthermore, students who live in Freeman and Russ seem to be encouraged to go home on the weekends because the dining hall closes so early on the weekends.

Why stay on campus when you can’t get food? Closing on the weekends, an old practice, has told these students that they aren’t wanted here on the weekends and might as well just go home.

So when the dining hall is open, no one is there because either they are still asleep or at home.

To be honest, I don’t really eat at Freeman that often, but I eat at Blanton less often.

Really, I just don’t eat at the dining halls (or most of the other eating establishments on campus) because my freshman year I got used to the idea that there was never food available when I was both free and hungry.

I try my best to avoid starving, but sometimes it’s a bit more of a battle than I would like.

Thank God the dining halls are open between meal times now. Honestly, that was what kept me from eating in them for the most part my freshman year, but we could do more.

If we want more students to eat at Freeman, which I certainly do, we need to offer them some incentive.

Or we need to just keep Freeman open and realize that a change isn’t going to occur overnight.

A new wave of students needs to come to change the behavior of those who live closest to Freeman.

If Freeman had always been open on the weekends, many wouldn’t have created the Saturday dinner at Blanton or the habit of going home every weekend.

Or maybe it was just that students were sleeping or slow to get out of bed on a weekend and didn’t rush down for breakfast/ lunch before 1 p.m..

We are talking about college students here — quite a few of us are late to wake up on the weekends.

It’s easy for the administration to hide behind the reasoning that students don’t really eat at Freeman, so it isn’t worth paying employees to be there in the evenings on weekends.

But closing it only encourages and reinforces that Blanton is really the dining hall that residents should be eating at. And if that’s the message administrators want to send, why even bother having a dining hall in the Freeman annex at all?

e live in a community that adheres to the views, opinions, tastes and demands of its everchanging youth.

It is social darwinism, the survival of the fittest business model.

While some companies and corporations are more reluctant to change than others, these companies die out and those that conform to our needs and wants are the ones that prevail.

Vegetarianism is a perfect example of how this is applied to our lives.

While it is a more health conscious and humane lifestyle, it may be considered somewhat of a trend as well.

That would mean that it falls under the category of factors affecting food establish-

Besides, you would be surprised at how many different cows contribute their meat to a single hamburger, or the amount of steroids the average chicken is injected with.

One benefit of vegetarianism, for example, is a lower risk of coronary disease. It is also the easiest and most convenient way to protect animal rights.

You don’t need to picket large meat monopolies to get your point across, nor do you have to impede it upon the people you are close to.

Vegetarianism is a subtle and pacifistic way to stand up for what you believe in.

It can also be a gateway to a healthier lifestyle, and relative to one’s dependency on meat products. It isn’t very difficult.

Though the less that food establishments acknowledge these changes and adhere to its demands, the more difficult a meat-free lifestyle becomes.

In the end, however, it is not the vegetarians who will suffer.

It is because of a steep incline in vegetarianism that places like Cafe´ Diem will not prevail, and a healthier and more humane lifestyle will.

A Day at Dodge

Weekend Poetry Festival in Newark Mark Gould Arts & Entertainment Editor

Hosted once every two years, the Dodge Poetry Festival is the largest poetic event in North America. This year’s festival took place the weekend of Oct 7-10, and featured over 50 poets, both widely acclaimed and relatively unknown. Among some of the most famous were former U.S. Poets Laureate Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Kay Ryan and Mark Strand.

The Dodge Poetry Festival is considered a Woodstock of poetry, “wordstock” as some fans have cleverly proclaimed.

The event started off Thursday night with brief readings from nearly two dozen poets; a taste of what’s to come. The following three days contain poetry readings, discussions about poetry pertaining to various crafts and styles and towards the end of the evening, a big display of top name poets reading their best work.

I arrived at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark early Sunday morning, ready for everything I was about to witness. Upon looking at the day’s event, I quickly realized that I could never see everything I had planned; much like Disney World or the Van’s Warped Tour, but with poetry.

I spotted Amiri Baraka, listed for one of the first readings. Baraka was a big part of the Beat Generation until he shifted into politics and became a leader of the Black Arts movement. When it was Baraka’s turn to read, I saw him quietly stand up from his seat, and slowly walk towards the stage. There was no introduction, no preamble of sorts.

The crowd knew exactly who he was. Despite now being 76 years old and far from his hey-

day, Baraka still delivered a powerful performance. He didn’t read many poems from his past, such as the popular “Black Arts,” but managed to deliver newer poems more relevant to today’s standards. He has recently been writing more poems in regard to President Obama. Baraka entertained the crowd as he filled the room with his powerful, yet still Black Arts empowered, words.

Afterwards, I headed over to a contemporary art gallery, where the next poetry reading I chose to attend was taking place. There were several ballrooms, stages and small houses, all containing different poets. As much as I wanted to shake hands with Sha-

ron Olds, I decided to see my old poetry teacher, Laura McCullough, read. McCullough was joined by Rutgers professor, Tara Betts, and Tyehimba Jess, who performed at Montclair State University last semester. McCullough read some of her newer poems, which often provide disturbing contrasts in themes. Her work often ranges from the erotic to tales of youth suicide.

Jess came in with a burst of energy, as he surprised the audience by playing blues harmonica to start and end one of his works.

One of the best parts about the Dodge Poetry Festival is the freedom to choose your own path. Attendees have the

freedom to see any poet they choose. Rather than cramping everyone in a large room with a pre-determined schedule, the Dodge Poetry Festival encourages people to explore the vast world around them.

I decided that I needed to check out a poetry discussion rather than attend the readings all day. I stumbled upon a group talk of the four former poets laureate, and watched the audience fill up. This was clearly the big selling point of the day. Billy Collins started off and talked about how a poet laureate doesn’t really have any clue what he or she is doing. Collins, as always, was sly and humorous with every sentence. Kay Ryan also provided a few witty oneliners, but kept serious in her claims that she believes in the lasting power of poetry. Rita Dove gave a lot of information about all her efforts to promote poetry during her time as laureate. Mark Strand, being an older gentleman, saved

his thoughts for the most part, until unleashing a few, often hilarious, stories. One in particular involved creating a poet memorial graveyard composed of life sized statues that would read poems at the touch of a button.

Attending the festival is crucial for anyone interested in poetry because you can not only see talented, accomplished poets, but you are also able to learn a lot from them.

Having so many poets in one place is a daunting task for a lowly fan trying to see as much as possible. However, with so many fruitful options, there was no wrong decision.

I would have loved to attend the Dodge Poetry Festival all weekend, but I was more than happy with one beneficial day.

I encourage anyone interested in poetry to keep your eyes out for 2012’s festival.

Just make sure you give yourself enough time to see it all.

Let’s Get Physical

Kasser Presents Film on Janney’s Physical Music Monica Winston Assistant A&E Editor

When a moderator suddenly falls ill and cannot attend the public discussion, one assumes panic would ensue.

However, this was not the case with Physical Music: A Public Discussion with Christopher Janney.

After an introduction by Jedediah Wheeler, executive director of Arts and Cultural Programming, the ever-charismatic Janney opened Physical Music with a brief timeline of what inspired him as an architect and musician. He covered everything from Pythagoras’ contributions to the fields of music and design to Italian water organs, from his father’s taste in jazz music, which became his own, to the rock and light shows he attended in his teenage years during the 1960s. It’s through this depiction of both the cerebral, aesthetic exposures and personal, emotional experiences that we learn about Janney’s perspective. This lays the framework for his film What is a Heart?, which chronicles the inspiration, creation and evolution of what may be his most compelling and emotional piece, Heartbeat.

What is a Heart? opens with Janney describing the passing of his father, Frederick,

as the result of a heart attack in 1979. He then skips ahead to 1981, where he is a Research Fellow at MIT, playing around with the idea of using a wireless telemetry device, which monitors a patient’s heart rate and rhythm, to amplify the sound of the heartbeat. Janney, a life-long music lover and drummer, envisions applying the heart monitor to a dancer, using his or her heartbeat as a percussive instrument and the backbone of a choreographed performance.

Janney relates this as fitting into his signature motif of physical music (making music more visual and architecture more spontaneous and alive) by having a dancer perform inside the architecture of her own heartbeat.

This film portrays vignettes of the creative process and a performance of one of the iterations of Heartbeat.

Janney touched on the collaborative aspect of the creative process, saying that collaboration in art never made much sense to him: “You usually have one guy’s idea and everyone else tries to work what’s signature to them into that idea. For true collaboration, you need to have like minds.”

Janney found just that in choreographer/dancer Sara Rudner, the principal dancer for Twyla Tharp, and the a

cappella group The Persuasions. Though Heartbeat embodies Janney’s creative vision, he attests that it would not have been the same without Rudner and The Persuasions.

In What is a Heart?, the performance of Heartbeat features Emily Coates dancing Rudner’s choreography. Heartbeat begins with just Coates’ own heartbeat, then she begins to dance and move; jazz, ballet, hip hop, theatrical gesture and tai chi all come together in a study of movement and the sound of the human heart.

Then, Janney reads what sounds like an explanation of medical terminology but he insists it doesn’t mean anything; the terminology is there to create a mental image. He then intones, whispers and scats number combinations, another allusion to the scientific realm from which this performance was developed. It’s in The Persuasions’ performance of a song Janney wrote, “What is a Heart?” for which the film is named, that we feel the

emotion of the piece as well as the emotional impetus that inspired Janney. I couldn’t help but overhear crowd members behind me humming, tapping and scatting along. At the conclusion of Heartbeat, several people were taken over by the emotion and began to clap, but then realized the film was not over yet. Janney concludes the film by talking about his own developing heart problems and showing footage of his son Freddy’s band performing “Y Luv,” which the emerging musician wrote. The audience sees now at its conclusion that a poignant story about the paternal bond is at the heart of

this film.

As the house lights come up, Janney directs the applause he’s receiving to select audience members, Emily Coates and The Persuasions, who were the hummers and tappers I overheard during the performance. Janney’s approachable and charismatic nature made it easy for audience members to ask him questions both in the discussion session and after the show in Kasser’s lobby, where he was signing copies of his book, Architecture of the Air: The Sound and Light Environments of Christopher Janney.

Mark’s New Music Roundup Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s is no stranger to reinvention. Originally composed of eight members, six remain, and the end result is proof. There is nothing too flashy or theatrical about Buzzard. In fact, the band has come a long way from being described as “chamber pop,” or “delicate indie.” The sound is now a simple rock band formula done better than most any other album released so far this year. Buzzard manages to write a new page in the band’s already impressive catalogue.

Even without former lead singer Craig Owens, Chiodos still manages to hold on to their unique blend of hardcore alternative rock. However, Illuminaudio is still not quite what most fans are looking for.

After the first few tracks, the album begins to sound like one long excessive block of noise.

The uniqueness that composed many of the band’s earlier work seems to have left with Owens. The sound is still loud, and the vocals are still uniquely raw, but fans looking for a similar sound to 2005’s All’s Well That Ends Well are only heading for disappointment.

Ryan Reynolds Stars In Unique Mystery Thriller

Buried Provides Crafty Directing, Suspense Ken Macri Staff Writer

Buried is a bold psychological thriller that is thought provoking and suspenseful. The film is carried out well by Rodrigo Cortes, an ambitious director who relies on the performance of only one major actor, Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a U.S. truck driver who is attacked by a group of Iraqi insurgents. He wakes up to find himself buried alive in a deep underground coffin. With only 90 minutes of oxygen, a lighter and a cell phone, Conroy must piece together clues in order to help reveal his location. He has poor reception and limited time, so the film becomes a hellish struggle of survival. The film takes place entirely within the coffin, and provides different camera views that really give the

audience the claustrophobic feeling that Conroy is experiencing. I noticed that the coffin is larger than a usual coffin, and I’m assuming that it was built to fit the camera within its structure to provide the brilliant camera views on Reynolds that Cortes desired. I really can’t go into detail about the plot without spoiling the film, but I will say that it will keep you at the edge of your seat, guessing what will happen next.

The different pieces of the story provided to the viewer via the conversations Conroy has on the phone, ultimately come together in a clever way. At points during the film, I almost felt as if I was in the coffin with Con-

roy, trying to piece together clues while struggling for survival.

If someone said that a film was going to use one actor and take place entirely within a coffin, I would have thought it to be a sure disaster. Buried somehow takes a simple, and seemingly meaningless, plot and turns it into a solid thriller with countless twists and turns. Reynolds gives the performance of his life in Buried, which was important because it seemed as if nothing less than his best would have succeeded. Buried was a risky concept, that was unrealistic at times, but

in the end the plot came together and the film was a definite success for the mystery thriller genre.

Sara Bareilles Returns with TV Worth Watching: Kaleidoscope Heart It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Lindsey Hresko Staff Writer

Sara Bareilles’s new CD, Kaleidoscope Heart, hit shelves last month.

Remember her? A presumed one-hit wonder with her poppy vocals and energetic piano melodies, Bareilles had the nation unconsciously singing, “I’m not gonna write you a love song,” for months.

Much to the approval of female singer/songwriter fans, Bareilles is back with new music. Her new album, Kaleidoscope Heart, comes after a three year hiatus from music. However, the new songs leave something to be desired. Bareilles can undoubtedly sing, and though many of her songs are piano melodies on repeat (such as her new single, “King of Anything”), it turns out she’s a halfway decent pianist as well.

The beauty of Bareilles’ previous work, Little Voice, is lost here. Most Bareilles listeners are partial to her “stick it to the man” attitude, the rea-

son her singles “King of Anything” and “Love Song” are so popular. Though “King of Anything” is an unarguably fun and upbeat song, it stands alone in likeability on this disc.

Kaleidoscope Heart’s somber tone adds 12 melancholy tracks to her collection. A far cry from the confident tone of Little Voice, Kaleidoscope Heart portrays Bareilles as insecure and selfdoubting. Many of the tracks became indistinguishable. By the time track seven rolled around, they had all started to blend together.

Bareilles has found success in the genre, as her album debuted at number one in the U.S. Still, lacking the versatility and witty lyrics of her last CD, Kaleidoscope Heart leaves Bareilles teetering dangerously on the verge of a sophomore slump. Bareilles is currently on tour through the U.S. and Canada for the remainder of the year and will go overseas to the United Kingdom with Maroon 5 in February 2011.

If you’re not watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then you’re missing out on one of the funniest shows of the past decade. Hailed as “Seinfeld on crack”, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the misadventures of a group of friends who own Paddy’s Pub, a run-down bar in south Philadelphia.

The show often portrays realistic scenarios pushed to absurd extremes. The episodes are often spoofs of political topics such as the mortage crisis, the rise in gas prices and the treatment of soldiers.

The new season features contraversial topics such as gay marriage and divorce, and will also will incorporate actress Kaitlin Olson’s real life pregnancy. So far, the episodes have the same comedic intensity as past seasons, which is a delight given season five’s arguably weaker plots.

What gives the show a devoted following is the brilliantly oblivious characters. The show follows a lot of classic sitcom standards, but the characters will often get into such bizarre disagreements and troubles that laughter is the only plausible result. The show is more than willing to go where no sitcom has before, containing a lot of vulgarity and decisions that would defy most social norms.

After season one, Danny Devito joined the cast as Dennis and Dee’s father, launching the show to even further heights in popularity. Most episodes are written by the three lead males: Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day. Fred Savage has directed many episodes, but the duties have lately been handled by Randall Einhorn.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia airs every Thursday night at 10pm on FX. The show is currently in its sixth season.

We arrived in New York City at around 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. You could smell the geekiness in the air as we joined a gaggle of cosplayers, people who come dressed as their favorite characters, and headed west to 11th Ave., and eventually the Jacob Javits center. As we neared our final dorky destination, the herds of nerds grew thicker. We were greeted outside the entrance by Boba Fett playing an accordion. It wasn’t until 30 minutes after that we realized he was playing the theme to Star Trek and not Star

Wars. Not to say that we were disappointed!

This year’s convention was the largest yet (due, in part to the combination of the Comic Convention and New York Anime Festival), filling almost the entire Javits center.

With three individual show floors and well over 10 panel rooms, there was practically an endless amount of things to see and enjoy. So much, in fact, that in this article, we just scratch the surface of everything they had to offer. After a brief wait to obtain glorious press passes, that with a mere utterance of the word “PRESS!” and a flash of the thing, would get one into anywhere except for the dark, inner workings of the Javits center, we hit the floor.

James: Being a huge Lego fan, my eyes were instantly drawn to the seemingly out of place sculptures at the end of the floor. I immediately recognized the iconic sculpture Yellow (a life-size torso ripping itself open, as Lego bricks pour out of the hole) and saw some other sculptures that I wasn’t as familiar with. Once at the booth, I saw a tall, younger looking man with slightly curly hair. My excitement mounted as I realized that he wasn’t just running the booth, but he was Nathan Sawaya, the critically acclaimed Brick Artist.

What made it difficult to believe was how friendly and approachable he was.

I found myself almost as giddy as I have been on Christmases past when I would unwrap Legos when Sawaya agreed to an interview with me. I asked him how he got started working with Lego bricks.

He said, “I originally started with traditional sculpting medium, then I tried sculpting with candy, it’s kind of like sculpting with Lego, since it’s additive sculpture. I wanted to challenge myself, so I decided to see what I could make with this childhood toy, and I began to make full size sculptures out of Legos.” Making these sculptures takes a lot of bricks. “I currently have 1.5 million bricks in my studio, and a couple million stored offsite just in case. A life-size human form is going to take probably 15 to 20 thousand Lego bricks and two to three weeks to complete,” Sawaya said.

Finally, I had to know why was he here with all the freaks and geeks.

Sawaya said, “Comic Con is really a celebration of all pop culture in all sorts of art forms. For me, this is my pop culture art, in Lego bricks. I thought it

would fit.”

The first panel that I had the pleasure of attending was the Robot Chicken panel (or as the cast later called it, a meeting of the “Silly Hats Club”) with Matt Senreich, Seth Green, Clare Grant and surprise guest, Macaulay Culkin. It might not have been the highlight panel of the day for the convention, however, it was the highlight of my day. We were shown a hilarious 30 second promo of their upcoming season five, which will begin in January. They discussed some of the sketches viewers can look forward to this season, including two Twilight parodies. One, titled, “Twilight: The Video Game” and a social commentary on the age of Edward in relation to Bella.

A God of War parody featuring Brian Austin Green was also promised to the fans and should be looked for in the upcoming season.

Green said, “If you don’t think that Brian Austin Green would make a good Kratos, then he’s about to prove you wrong.” They then promoed the first ever holiday special made by the show, which will be debuting this year on Dec. 12 with some clips that starred Macaulay in a Home Alone parody.

The panel then gave us another set of clips for the third Star Wars parody Robot Chicken is doing. However, instead of sticking to the typical 15 minute run time, they decided to make it a full hour. This is incredible news for the fans, however, an immense amount of work for the animators and writers of the show. Stop motion is not a quick method for creating footage.

Now, I have been a fan of what many would call “Disney magic” for most of my life. Disney, like Lego, was a part of my childhood that made me laugh, cry

and run screaming in terror when my dad took me to see Aladdin when I was just a tad too young for the movie. Now because of this I was extremely excited to go see the panel on Disney’s newest video game. I will admit that Disney games are not what they were in the days of The Lion King for the SEGA Genesis. I was calmed though when I saw that the two people at the head of the panel were none other then Warren Spector, creator of Deus EX (which won countless game of the year awards, which he tabulated as 35), and the head of the game Disney was showing here today, Epic Mickey. I was also excited to see Peter David, who is head writer on the project and known for his work on comics and television shows like Battle Star Galatica, Doctor Who, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, just to name a few. They were able to put my fears to rest as they talked about the game.

They spoke a lot about game design mechanics and then moved on to their main focus of the game, reintroducing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald was

Walt Disney’s first ever cartoon, done under the direction of Universal. Walt lost Oswald in a contract dispute with Universal along with his job. The turmoil caused Walt to start his own company and create the iconic mouse we know today.

Warren said, “Think about how far games have come, that Disney asked us to reintroduce the world to an icon that the world has not seen in about 70 years. I think that says a lot” On Sunday, we had the privilege of going to a panel on AMC’s The Walking Dead, an adaptation of a landmark comic book into a television series. The panel consisted of the writer of the comic (Robert Kirkman), the director (Frank Darabont), producer (Denise M. Huth) and actors of the main ensemble.

During the panel, the packed theater was given a six minute preview of the second episode, which received deafening applause. The panel discussed both creative and technical issues that went into the production of the series, such continued on page 21

From what we saw, the episodes will be nothing but amazing. They truly try to capture what it means to be a zombie film. I know I said “film” but that’s what the directors said they were aiming for. Which is great, because they have cinema quality, without the constraints of a two hour time slot. Episodes can convey all the poignancy and emotion without having to fit a formula for time.

The Walking Dead will premiere on Halloween night at 10 p.m.

Next year’s New York Comic Con will take place Oct. 14-16. Hope to see you there.

Being a convention “n00b” I was completely unprepared for my first step onto the main floor. My view was predominated by the Intel booth. In essence, it was a two floor tech-demo.

Multiple stations were set up, each running a different game. I saw Star Craft 2, Unreal Tournament 3, Star Trek and Civilization V. Each of these games were being run on computers that would make The Flash look slow, and the $3.75 water bottles look cheap.

Being a first person shooter fan and a player of Unreal Tournament 2004, I was anxious to get a look into UT3.

Comic Con was apparently running a tournament, but I couldn’t get my hands on a controller. However, I was able to get a good look at the graphics and I was extremely impressed. When I heard that the Unreal engine had been overhauled, I was a skeptic. I know the computers were probably charging on all cylinders, but the game looked visually pleasing.

After the lack of a first-hand gaming experience at the Intel booth, I was dying to get my hands on at least one game. I was walking by the IGN booth, which was running an Xbox 360 with the new Kinect system. The guy promoting the game, BJ, saw the press pass and gave me a devilish smile that made me know I was in for an experience. He promised James and me an “exclusive demo” of the technology and gameplay. Not knowing what we were in for, we agreed (by “we agreed” I mean James took the camera, gave me the mic, pushed me in front of the setup and then agreed).

BJ showed me how the Kinect uses an infrared light source and a 3D camera to map the players standing in front of it. There is also a normal camera used to capture pictures of the players during climactic moments ingame. After showing me the technology, BJ offered to let me play a game they weren’t letting the average joe play. The games I had seen demoed were a dodgeball type game and a gross misrepresentation of river rafting. BJ went into the menu and pulled up a file named “DANCE. XEX.” My gut reaction was fear (mostly because I know that I am incapable of anything even resembling dance), however, James was still furiously nodding “yes,” so I had to play.

Kinect removes the controller from your hands entirely and then makes your whole body the controller. The best way I can describe the game that I played was as a horrible combination of Dance Dance Revolution and public humiliation. As BJ gathered a crowd to watch me play, I had to navigate through the menus with my body. I think this is a novel concept, however, Kinect got immensely confused whenever my right hand moved even slightly in front of my torso. This is a problem, seeing as how my right hand was supposed to be the controller, and I had to move in the menus.

When the selection system did work, however, it felt like I was in some scifi movie where everything is controlled by your hands, but you don’t have to touch a thing (sounds quite a bit like the movie I wrote, which I’m still looking to sell, title “Germaphobes... in Space!” Contact me if you’re interested, but only if you’re Clint Eastwood and you’re looking to direct). Once I had picked a character that somewhat resembled what I envision my cooler alter-ego to look like, I had the opportunity to choose from two songs.

New York’s Comic Con 2010 resulted in a huge turn out of fans

Either I would dance along to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” or to some unknown track. Seeing that I had an adoring fan base so generously supplied by BJ, I decided to put it to a vote and then went for the Gaga anyway. The next three and a half minutes were blurs of shame, fits of laughter and trying to follow an animated character’s on-screen movements. If I thought I was bad at dancing before, then this game only reaffirmed my fears. It wasn’t terribly difficult (that might have something to do with it being set to “easy”) but the huddled mass of onlookers somehow messed me up.

I finished the song and saw that the game had decided that I scored three out of five stars, and was pleased that the Xbox 360 didn’t leave midway through, like most of the audience BJ had gathered. Overall, it was a fun experience. However, I don’t know about the longevity of Kinect. I don’t think I could play games on it without messing up during a critical moment in a boss fight and getting so frustrated that I throw the controller (my body) across the room. If you’re looking to play some games similar to Nintendo Wii’s style

on your 360 for giggles, then go for it. If you’re a hardcore gamer looking to get the next big thing, this might not be it, at least not yet.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like crowds.

Not. One. Bit. Friday was pretty busy for me. I thought the convention center was full, but I thought wrong. Saturday brought a fully sold-out Con, and a sense of claustrophobia in a mass of living flesh that I’ll not soon forget. Eager to get away from the sweaty mass, I retreated into a panel about one of my favorite shows on Comedy Central, Ugly Americans. The panel was run by Randy Pearlstein, the voice of Leonard Powers, and featured Aaron Augenblick, the supervising producer; Matt Oberg, the voice of Mark Lilly and Larry Murphy, the voice of Lt. Grimes.

It was apparent that the group had great chemistry together, and got along extremely well. A promotional clip for season two was shown and then commented on by the cast and crew. They also described the process behind getting some of Randall’s funniest lines.

Overall, the panel made for a great respite from the crowded Comic Con.

Volleyball Sweeps Match with RU-Newark

The struggling Montclair State Volleyball team (3-21, 2-3 NJAC) can rest easy after Thursday’s dominant victory over Rutgers-Newark, winning three sets to none.

This win snaps a nine-game losing streak in which their overall set record was 3-27. They faced a similarly strug-

gling Scarlet Raptors squad whose current record stands at 6-11 (1-5 NJAC).

The key player and centerpiece of Thursday’s shutout victory was freshman and NJAC Defensive Player of the Week Kaitlyn Irwin. The first-year defensive specialist continued her stalwart play with an impressive team-high 19 digs.

This is nothing new to MSU’s NJAC rivals, as Irwin is also the conference leader in total digs and digs per game with 77 and 5.79, respectively. Her leaguehigh 77 digs is 11 more than runner-up Christine Astarita’s 66 of Stockton. She

also contributed on offense with a gamehigh four service aces.

Sophomore captain Alyssa Batiste demonstrated her talented ball-handling skills against the Scarlet Raptors.

Ranked 10th in assists in the conference, Batiste continued to rack up her numbers with 11 more, bringing her total to 181 for the season. She also gave Irwin some “assist”tance on defense, contributing with nine digs, second on the team.

The standout freshman duo, composed of outside hitters Megan Cockcroft and Marta Topor, padded their decent num-

bers in Thursday’s victory. They combined for 14 of MSU’s 27 kills and three of the team’s 10 service aces. Topor’s seven points brings her total to a teamhigh 200.5 for the season, good enough to be the 13th in the NJAC. Cockcroft continues to improve offensively, leading the team in the shutout with 10.5 points.

The Red Hawks have yet to win two games in a row this season. There is a good chance this will change on Thursday, Oct. 14 as they face New Jersey City, who is 0-4 in the conference. Come show your support at 7 p.m. at Panzer Gym.

Fantasy Football Start ‘Em/Sit ‘Em: Week Six Brandon Gincel Staff Writer

START ‘EM QB – Michael Vick/Kevin Kolb– Fantasy owners beware, you need to pay attention to the injury reports this week to find out if Michael Vick is good to go.

If he is not, then you can slide Kevin Kolb right in to your starting lineup. Both of these guys are interchangeable playing at home against a weak Atlanta secondary.

RB – Ahmad Bradshaw – The Giants have the privilege of playing the Lions at home this week. Detroit is a bottom tier defense in terms of giving up fantasy points to running backs. Bradshaw should be able to eclipse 100 yards of total offense and get a score this weekend.

WR – Percy Harvin – The Vikings face the Cowboys at home this week in a must win game. With the acquisition of Randy Moss to the offense in Minnesota, Harvin should start to receive more and more targets each week as defenses try to plan for Moss and Peterson. The benefits of the Moss trade have already begun as Harvin had 95 yards and two touchdowns versus a top defense last week in the New York Jets.

SIT ‘EM QB – Shaun Hill – Hill’s hot streak should come to an end this week on the road as the Lions travel to New Meadowlands Stadium to play a hot New York Giants defense. The Giants’ front line has been making a habit of getting to the opposing quarterback early and often, disrupting their rhythms, and against Chicago they knocked two quarterbacks out of the game. Hill should not be considered this week as a starter or bye week option.

RB – Joseph Addai – Addai had to come out of the game last week against Kansas City after suffering a shoulder injury in

workload with Mike Hart, the man who scored the game clinching touchdown for the Colts last week.

WR – Braylon Edwards – The Jets face Denver this weekend, which makes Edwards a risky play. On top of the

Jets being a primarily run heavy team, Santonio Holmes fresh off his suspension will be taking targets away from Edwards. That is, any targets that one of the league’s best cornerbacks, Champ Bailey, won’t have already taken away.

This Week Around the NJAC: Field Hockey MSU-Rowan Game on Saturday Will Help Mold NJAC Race Mike Monostra Sports Editor

The race for the NJAC in field hockey is about to heat up this weekend when the MSU Red Hawks and Rowan Profs do battle at Sprague Field on Saturday night. Along with the TCNJ Lions, Montclair State and Rowan are the only undefeated teams left in the NJAC. In field hockey, the NJAC champion is determined by regular season standings, similar to football. There is no postseason conference tournament. That makes every regular season game critical and one loss can end a team’s title hopes.

Montclair, Rowan and TCNJ are the only realistic contenders in the NJAC, with TCNJ and Rowan as the front-runners. They are ranked 11th and 13th in the nation respectively, and they finished one-two in the conference last season.

TCNJ and Rowan are also the only two programs to win the NJAC title since the conference began sponsoring field hockey in 1982. This leaves the Red Hawks as the dark horse among the three teams.

History has not been too kind to the Red Hawks. MSU has had a solid program for years, but they have struggled to win critical match-ups against both Rowan and TCNJ. Montclair State has lost their last five matches against Rowan and their last four against TCNJ. However, if the Red Hawks want to have any chance at winning the conference, they are going to have to beat at least one of these teams, if not both.

Beating Rowan on Saturday and TCNJ the following Saturday, Oct. 23, will put them in the driver’s seat of the NJAC. From there, they will only have to beat two struggling teams in William Paterson and Richard Stockton as well as complete a suspended game against Kean, where the Red Hawks already lead 3-0. However, this is much easier said than done.

If Montclair goes 1-1 against these teams, then the focus will shift over to the Rowan-TCNJ game, which will be played on Friday, Nov. 5. For example, if MSU beats Rowan, but loses to TCNJ, they can stay in the title hunt if Rowan beats TCNJ in the final game of the season. As long as the other four in the conference doesn’t upset these three teams, it’ll create a three-way tie for the conference championship.

When it comes to Rowan and TCNJ, the Lions are nationally ranked just two spots higher than the Profs. The Lions historically have the advantage over Rowan, but in recent years Rowan’s program has caught up to TCNJ in terms of prominence. This season, both teams have won and lost to different top-25 teams in non-conference games,

Senior Deana Hagel and the Red Hawks fell to Rowan 2-1 on the road last season. They will look to avenge that loss when the two teams meet on Saturday. so it’s tough to tell which team would be favored in that game.

For the Red Hawks, they will be hosting a Rowan team on Saturday that defeated the nation’s former number one team, Salisbury, last week. The win propelled Rowan to 13th in the polls and also earned them a first place vote this week. Rowan also defeated Kean 3-2 on

Saturday, boosting their NJAC record to 3-0.

The best-case scenario for the Red Hawks would be to pull off back-to-back upsets over the Profs and Lions. It’s the only way MSU can control their own destiny, otherwise, they will be watching the scoreboard through the final two weeks of the season.

Right now, the team’s focus will be on the Profs. Rowan is on a three game winning streak that started with a win over RPI, in a game that was actually played at Sprague Field. Hagel’s Big Night Pushes Field Hockey Past New Paltz Mike Monostra Sports Editor

MSU Field Hockey opened up the 2010 Homecoming weekend with a bang Friday night, defeating the SUNY-New Paltz Hawks by a score of 3-1.

The Red Hawks controlled the action for most of the game, especially during the first half. MSU outshot New Paltz 7-3 in the opening period and scored two goals that really allowed them to settle down in the second half.

MSU’s first goal came in the game’s 15th minute, when senior forward Deana Hagel’s shot was saved by New Paltz goalie Antonija Pjetri. The ball shot right back to Hagel, who’s second shot found its way past Pjetri and into the cage, giving MSU a 1-0 lead.

The Red Hawks scored again ten minutes later off of a penalty corner. Hagel would feed the corner to senior defender Jessica Murphy, who blasted a hard shot from the edge of the scoring circle and into the cage for a goal. That made the score 2-0 in favor of MSU heading into halftime.

A rough first half for New Paltz left them with a sense of urgency, and they put more offensive pressure on the Red Hawks in the second half. The Red Hawks were able to score early in the period as

senior forward Melissa Flaherty deflected a shot from Hagel into the cage to give the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead.

However, that was all MSU would do the rest of the night offensively. The Red Hawks only out-shot New Paltz 6-5 in the second half and managed five penalty corners, one of which led to New Paltz’s only goal, a score by senior Sarah Schloss.

Despite the pressure, the Red Hawks’ defense held tough through a late barrage from New Paltz. Coach Beth Gottung called a timeout shortly after the New Paltz goal, a move that seemed to settle down the team and allow them to buckle down. New Paltz had just two shots after the timeout, both of which came in the last three minutes, when a MSU win was all but inevitable.

After a rough previous week, when MSU lost two straight games, the Red Hawks are back on a two game winning streak, as they looked focused in their wins over Ramapo last Tuesday and New Paltz on Friday.

They will need that focus to carry over this weekend, as the Red Hawks face a huge NJAC game against the Rowan Profs on Saturday night. Both the Red Hawks and Profs are undefeated in the NJAC. Rowan is also ranked 13th in the nation heading into this weekend’s game.

The game will be at Sprague Field starting at 6 p.m.

Montclair’s defense made sure they did not score as they kicked the ball away from the net, not giving Kean any chances. With one minute left, Kean’s Teghan Pecherski’s beat Montclair’s defense and scored to the far left of the cage.

The teams entered half time with a score of 0-1, with favor to Kean. That score did not last long as Montclair came flying out and scored right over Kean’s goalie in the top right by Alyssa Diacheysn with an assist by Rachel Senyszyn. Kean fought back in this tie game as they charged for Montclair’s net.

Zayac came out of the net again to grab the ball but then Kean got in another shot. Senior Katie Hazzard was there

at the right time as she stopped the ball from going in and kicked it upfield.

“She definitely saved the game, if that goal were to happen the game would have been over,” Zayac said.

The game remained tied for 20 minutes. As everyone got anxious about who was going to win this game, Kean’s players started fighting with the referee causing Lauren Small to get red carded and thrown out of the game. Kean continued the game with one player down.

Regular time ended and the teams entered the first period of overtime. “We just wanted the golden goal.” Zayac said, “We wanted to get a goal quick because we put too much effort into this game to have no outcome.”

Kean’s Danielle Esposito started overtime with a breakaway but lost control.

As both teams battled to win the game, the first period of overtime soon ended with no further score. Kean’s coaches were angry with the calls the referees had been making all night and called their attention. The referees gave the two coaches yellow cards.

The second overtime started, and everyone was on their feet to see who would win this game. The teams fought for their NJAC superiority. Kean’s forward was going straight for the left net as she beat four defenders and took a shot but the ball spun off just to the left of the net, leaving the game tied as the players left the field.

Tatro’s Three Goals Boosts Men’s Soccer Kofi Biney Staff Writer

Over the course of a season, a team will have to deal with various kinds of adversity. In the case of Montclair State’s men’s soccer team, it was a bruising 4-1 defeat to arch-rival William Paterson on Wednesday evening. In reality, there was only one way that MSU was going to come back from such a deflating loss: win. And on Homecoming Saturday, they did just that, with a comprehensive 9-1 thrashing of the City College of New York Beavers at MSU Soccer Park.

However, this game did not start out well for the Red Hawks. At 11:11, junior forward Muhammad Zakari capitalized on a great pass from Mozaffirou Afoda to score from inside 10 yards, giving CCNY a surprise 1-0 lead. Even after the goal, when Montclair State brought on the offensive pressure, CCNY goalie Tayfun Kucuk made sure to stop whatever came his way. The game’s first official timeout would come a few minutes later, and with it went any sort of momentum CCNY had.

“The coaches were a little disappointed after the CCNY goal, yet they told us to play easy and play simple,” said sophomore defender Will O’Connor after the game.

The Red Hawks came back after the timeout a different team, scoring three goals in the span of five minutes, all by senior forward Chris Tatro.

Two of his three goals were almost identical in location (five yards out on the right side), with assists coming from Kevin Zalewski and Dan Mendoza at 18:38 and 19:11, respectively. Tatro’s third goal was a header, which rounded off the hat-trick and extended Tatro’s goal tally to five in the season. Goals from Thomas Benack and Jay Fartura made it 5-1 at intermission.

The second half started out in the same way as the first ended, with a Montclair State goal. Substitute Jon Christensen made it 6-1 with a header off a Sean Paulus’ cross at 46:50.

Sasha Dobrijevic and men’s soccer headed their way past CCNY this weekend with a 9-1 victory. four minutes later with a shot from 12 yards out. Jay Fartura made the score 8-1 MSU with a great goal, slipping past CCNY’s substitute goalie David Criollo, with a nifty move after Criollo came out to stop him.

The match, for all intents and purposes, turned into a training scrimmage after the eighth goal, with both teams engaging in what could only be described as an older, more composed version, of a kick-about one would see at a youth soccer game. The overall play, for 28 minutes or so, consisted of a lot of kicking

and running with very little action and very few opportunities being formulated by both teams. However, a breakthrough came at 78:27. Kevin Reinhart scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Matt Sommer to make it 9-1 Montclair State, effectively putting the game out of reach (if it had not blatantly been the case already).

For everyone involved, this result was a crucial one. “We were looking for a big win after last game and we got that,” said Tatro after the match.

In regards to winning an unprecedent-

ed fifth NJAC conference title, this game was important in terms of making sure that goal stayed intact.

“We control our own destiny,” said Head Coach Brian Sentowski.

Concerning another conference title, Will O’Connor also had this to say: “We’ve said all year that the sky’s the limit. If we just keep coming out and playing hard, it will be very difficult for other teams to beat us.”

The Red Hawks continue their 2010 season on Wednesday evening at Kean University, game time is 7:30 p.m.

Too Many Sponsors, Not Enough Action in Sports

Yankee Stadium’s outfield scoreboard is littered with numerous ads from companies that try to attract the fan’s attention away from the game.

The first line of this column is brought to you by Chuck’s Bar and Grill. The second line is accepting offers for a sponsor at this moment. Advertising is found all through sports, from the back of baseball players helmets, to the top of the backboard in basketball.

The 15th batter of a recent baseball game was sponsored by Geico.

Sponsorship is so important that Head and Shoulders took out a one million dollar insurance policy on Troy Polamalu’s hair to keep it intact. The only thing we’re missing is Petco’s sponsorship of Michael Vick’s Pet Adoption Clinic, or Budweiser sponsoring a Mothers Against Drunk Drivers special event with guest star Braylon Edwards. Stations can even

fit in a political advertisement to support children’s rights with Lawrence Taylor as the spokesman.

Interviews are “brought to you by” electronic stores, television segments are “sponsored by” restaurants, even the car dealership that sponsored the opening monologue to a radio show was sponsored by a charity that’s asking for people’s used cars.

Ads are placed everywhere anyone might see it. Camera angles that are shown once a game have logos placed perfectly for that one time that obscure angle is used.

It’s understandable to have sponsorships. A show can be sponsored by any company willing to pay, but we’re looking at four or five sponsors per inning now. There are official ice cream sponsors, hardware sponsors, the Yankees even have an official roofing and window

sponsor. Concession stands in nearby stadiums have sponsors, and seats in some of these places even have sponsors.

The weather report I’m listening to was sponsored by Goodyear tires. It took the reporter longer to talk about the sponsor and say the tagline than it did to say the five day forecast. Advil is now sponsoring the halftime injury report.

There are tons of ads in movies, video games and even on the seatbelts of racecars. Are we supposed to be able to read those little stickers on the bottom of the cars, or is it a form of legal subliminal messaging? The small paper cups athletes drink from have a clear, noticeable Gatorade symbol. Every jersey or hat the pros wear has a visible Reebok, Nike or Addidas symbol.

There are so many advertisements and so little time. Football games have television time outs for extended commercials

and pitchers have extra time to warm up when they switch innings. Baseball commissioner, Bud Selig, wants the umpires to speed up the pace of the game, arguing that the audience gets bored when the games take too long. The speed at which the game is played hasn’t changed since it first originated, if anything the games progress faster. I’m not sure that the game play is the reason why they take three hours to be completed.

Advertising has become so big that people watch the Super Bowl just to see the commercials. I want to see the games, hear the announcers discuss the game, watch the highlights without each play being so important that Mountain Dew has to Amp it up. Swim Team Looking to Make Big Splash in 2010-11 Season Jon Fazio Staff Writer

The Montclair State Swimming and Diving teams are gearing up for their upcoming season that runs from midOctober to late February. The team has been training at captain’s practices and participating in team runs to stay in shape.

Senior Laura Spadoni, breaststroker for the women’s swim team, feels like she’s lived in the Panzer gym since school started.

“We have been in and out [of Panzer] before the sun rises and after the sun

sets,” says Spadoni. “It’s basically a full time job, but it’s absolutely worth it.”

Thomas Long, sophomore and freestyler for the men’s team, expects the team to improve from last year because of the depth from incoming freshmen.

“We have new breaststrokers and butterflyers,” says Long. “We really didn’t really lose much in those departments.

Even more freestylers joined this season so we know that our free events will be tough to beat.”

The team is always looking for areas of improvement to cut down on times during matches, and Long believes that the team needs to work on starts and turns in the pool.

“We don’t work on those as much as we should,” says Long. “I think we can really improve our times if we focus on those.”

Laura Spadoni thinks the team needs more support from the student body as the season moves forward when they compete against other schools during competitions.

“It would definitely be great to not shock the people I meet on campus with the news that ‘MSU actually has a swim team,’” says Spadoni.

the defensive attack with 15 tackles and 3.5 sacks on the afternoon. His efforts earned him the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week Award.

“We just had to tackle better,” Avento said. “They had a couple runs that we didn’t wrap up, and we just needed better tackling.”

Despite the defensive efforts, the Red Hawk offense was not yet in sync, as the two teams traded punts for the entire third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, MSU was able to re-take the lead as Fischer found

wide receiver Joe LaSala in the corner of the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown.

The real turning point, though, came on the Lions’ following possession, when MSU cornerback Gary Knoeppel picked off quarterback James Donoghue.

Knoeppel returned the interception 41 yards for a touchdown, increasing the Red Hawk lead 24-14. While the MSU lead was only at 10, the score greatly deflated the Lions.

“Our whole defense was trying to make a play,” Knoeppel said. “Someone had to make a play, so that’s what it came down

to.”

MSU’s defense kept the Lions at bay the rest of the afternoon, keeping them deep in their own territory and not allowing them to move the ball. Jimenez added a touchdown run later in the fourth quarter as the homecoming crowd celebrated a fifth straight Red Hawk victory.

Fourth Quarter Warriors Red Hawks Recover From 14-10 Deficit To Win Homecoming

Montclair State went into halftime of the homecoming game against the TCNJ Lions down 14-10. While the Red Hawks were in the locker room trying to make adjustments for the second half, on the field the undefeated 1960 football team was being honored for their outstanding achievements, reminding fans what it takes to build a winning team.

The 2010 Red Hawks then came out for the second half channelling that winning spirit, dominating the Lions en route to a 30-14 come-from-behind win in front of 6,178 fans at Sprague Field.

“We never gave up,” said freshman linebacker Dan Avento. “We made some adjust-

ments [at halftime] and we knew we were OK. We just have to play better.”

The road to the win was a rough one, as MSU seemed to hit a slump after going up 10-0 early in the first half. Tom Fischer threw a touchdown pass to Byron Lewin on the Red Hawks’ opening drive to give them a 7-0 lead. After a TCNJ interception on the ensuing possession, MSU added a 25-yard field goal from Jake Delvento for a 10-0 lead.

The rest of the first half was all about the Lions, as they pounded the ball with the run game, taking time off the clock and tiring the Red Hawk defense.

Running backs Justin Doniloski and Joe Falco helped TCNJ gain over 120 yards on the ground in the first half. Falco would also run for two second quarter

touchdowns, pushing the Lions to a 14-10 halftime lead.

The offense did not help matters after two quick scores in the first quarter. With senior running back Chris D’Andrea out with a foot injury, MSU turned to senior Matt Jimenez and freshman A.J. Scoppa to run the ball. They struggled to move the ball early, when the Red Hawks put together a drive late in the first half, Scoppa lost a fumble in Lions territory.

The second half, however, saw MSU make adjustments defensively that shut down the Lions’ attack. TCNJ failed to gain a single yard of offense in the second half, forcing them to constantly punt to MSU. Senior linebacker Ed Kirschenbaum led Homecoming Continued on Page 27
