I said nothing, completing my work in the neatest manner possible. Then I took a rag from the pocket of my chalat, and started cleaning the mess I’d created. “That’s okay,” the woman said. “I’ll clean it up.” But I continued removing the big piles of white. How could I leave her with my debris? Then Rachamim brought out a roll of wire, and showed me how to thread it.

I jumped down from the truck, grabbing his shoulders to calm him. But he shook me off and laid his hands on mine instead, steering me toward the street.

The woman continued to look on as I learned. I found myself self-consciously scrutinizing my every move along with her. I nearly tripped on the counter from being so absorbed in my own movements. “Why don’t we nail the wire to the wall?” I asked. Rachamim peered up from where he was kneeling, rubbing his yarmulke and scrunching his nose.
