I really enjoyed Power Tools. I know this wasn’t the main point of the story, but I really related to Riva’s feelings when she suddenly stopped working. I want to share my experience and perspective.

I was fortunate: My husband was in kollel, which gave me a tremendous sense of purpose in my life and gave value to my work. But with time and perspective, I eventually understood that I also kept working because I was afraid of change, and I was afraid of being “alone with myself” for so many hours every day. The fact that I was “doing so much” — working and managing my family — gave me a sense of selfworth. I was afraid that if I stopped working, I wouldn’t be worthy.

I still struggle not to link my self-worth with my actions, and to remember that my value does not change based on how busy I am.

One day, the business that employed me went bankrupt, and I suddenly found myself as a SAHM. It was a tough adjustment. I felt empty. It took me a few weeks to figure out how to plan and spend my days in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling for me. Baruch Hashem, I love my new lifestyle now.

During the years that I was working, I had five children. I was occasionally on the receiving end of comments from family and friends that smacked of judgment. They made pointed comments about my choices, based on their own life experience and values, and tried to force their choices on me.

Decisions about whether a mother should work, and how much, are personal and individual. As much as you might care about or even love someone, you will never be fully privy to their circumstances, abilities, tolerance level, or degree of outside help. Don’t judge them; be supportive and cheer them on. To all working mothers out there — in fact, all mothers — you are heroes.

I’ll miss Riva and all Power Tools characters!

Thank you so much for a wonderful magazine. I especially enjoyed Esty Heller’s Power Tools story. The emotional conflicts of the characters really resonated with me.

In her postscript, Esty Heller claims that the only way out of bullying is often to simply run away. Allow me to share a resource that might be helpful. There’s an effective school program that creates unity and eliminates bullying called My Team Magic. It was developed by a former school principal, Mrs. Malka Miller (wife of Dr. Stanley Miller) and has been successfully implemented in several Brooklyn schools.

Please pass this on to Esty Heller in case it could be of help for her friend’s child.

I want to thank The Monsey View for giving us the opportunity to share and learn from others. I read the letter you printed in Issue 414 about purchasing affordable alkaline water, and it was a huge game-changer for my family. My daughter has been suffering from heartburn for many years. She tried multiple diets, supplements and over-thecounter medications. After switching to alkaline water, she is, baruch Hashem, symptom-free and even able to eat and enjoy her favorite chocolate again. I switched to alkaline water as well, and my bone density test results also came back improved.

I want to bring awareness about something important. There are businesses in our community that are struggling. It’s up to us to support our brothers. Recently, I have been making the effort to shop in our local stores (instead of on Amazon or big box stores). I know that together, we can make a huge difference to our local store owners and their employees. When you spend your money in the community, the business owner can give jobs to members of the community and support the community’s mosdos. Those businesses and institutions can then meet their obligations, hire more people, serve more people, and grow to benefit the community. This becomes a positive cycle, and everyone benefits.

Hashem instructed Moshe to command Aharon and his sons regarding their duties and rights as kohanim. The pasuk concludes, “And Aharon and his sons did all the things Hashem commanded through Moshe” (Vayikra 8:36).

This seems like an unnecessary statement. Obviously, Aharon would do as he was commanded. Why would one think Aharon would veer from the instructions Moshe relayed from Hashem?

THE YIDDEN OF LYUBAN, Belarus, suffered inordinately at the hands of a fellow Jewish townsman. An archetypical informant, he gleefully snitched on his fellow brothers at any opportunity. Everyone knew to stay far away from him if they did not wish to be reported to the authorities for misdeeds, true or not.

Shortly before he passed away, the Yid summoned the local chevra kaddisha with a strange request. On his deathbed, he expressed his regret for his wrongdoings and his wish to rectify them before he would need to give a din v’cheshbon in the Olam Ha’emes.

“I would like to be buried in a disgraceful manner, in atonement for my sins,” he said. “Please bury me in a standing position.”

Moved by his sincerity, the people around him promised they would do as requested, and even signed to that effect in his last will and testament.

When the rav of the town, Reb Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, heard about the agreement, he expressed his opposition.

“The Shulchan Aruch states that it is forbidden to bury a Yid in an upright position, since it’s considered a disgraceful burial,” he declared. “This man is no different.”

He instructed the chevra kaddisha to disregard the agreement and bury the informant in a prone po-

sition, just like any other Yid. And that is what they did.

The following morning, police officers came to the chevra kaddisha and insisted that they open the grave. All arguments that it is forbidden to open a grave after burial fell on deaf ears. When the police threatened to expose the grave themselves, the chevra kaddisha had no choice but to acquiesce.

The grave was opened, and the police officers peered inside. Then they looked at each other and walked away.

It turned out that the informant had sent the police a letter prior to his death, in which he wrote that the Jews would bury him disgracefully in retribution for his collaboration with the authorities.

Had the community members not heeded the guidance of Reb Moshe, the entire kehillah would have been in danger!

Reb Shalom Schwadron, zt”l, once went to the Chazon Ish, zt”l, and told him that his son was suffering from shortness of breath. The Chazon Ish advised him to go boating in Park Hayarkon. He explained that the clear air and scent of eucalyptus from the trees alongside the water were healthy for the child.

Without delay, Reb Shalom took his son and rented a boat on the Yarkon.

R’ Shalom’s son repeated that every few minutes, he heard his father say, “I am fulfilling the mitzvah of listening to our chachamim.”

After half an hour on the water, the boy felt much better. “Abba!” he said happily, “Now we know the miraculous medicine! Anyone who suffers from shortness of breath should come here and be healed.”

The grave was opened, and the police officers peered inside. Then they looked at each other and walked away

He immediately went to the local authorities and asked them to document the birth of a son. “His name is Yitzchak”

Reb Shalom smiled. “Know, my son, that it isn’t the eucalyptus trees or the boat that heals. The cure is emunas chachamim! When we listen to the guidance of a rav, then we have the medicine for all illnesses in the world.”

A chassid once came to Rav Chaim of Sanz, zt”l. He and his wife had yet to be blessed with children, and he wanted a bracha. The Sanzer Rav assured him he would have a son, and the chassid left, elated.

He was so confident in the bracha he had received that he immediately went to the local authorities and asked them to document the birth of a son. “His name is Yitzchak,” he said. The officials issued a birth certificate.

Nine months later, his wife gave birth to a girl. A year later, another daughter was born, and one year after that, another daughter. After five daughters, the couple finally merited a son. Indeed, they named him Yitzchak.

Family and friends joked at the story. “What did you gain from believing in the rav?” they laughed.

But the blessed father was delighted with his daughters just as he was with the son that arrived at last.

Thirteen years later, the dreaded army draft notice arrived from the Russian military. According to their books, Yitzchak was already eighteen. Young Yitzchak appeared in the army headquarters, and when they saw that he was as short and thin as a thirteen-year-old, they thought he was unwell. They issued a deferment for him.

Yitzchak returned home and went to the beis midrash, where he was able to learn undisturbed and ultimately grow into a great talmid chacham. * * * *

There is an obligation on every Yid to listen to the words of our chachamim and to accept their words as if they were heard from Hashem.

In this vein, the Me’am Loez explains the pasuk regarding Aharon. He points out that Aharon was a navi in his own right. It would have been understandable if he were pained or insulted that Hashem did not speak with him directly, but rather chose to give over the instructions to his younger brother Moshe, despite the fact that they pertained specifically to him. Instead, Aharon and his sons followed Moshe’s instructions completely, without any deviation or any complaint.

The Torah explicitly emphasizes Aharon’s joyous acceptance and how he followed instructions exactly as told to him through Moshe. Since Moshe Rabbeinu was the manhig of Klal Yisroel, Aharon submissively listened as if he had heard it directly from Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

The most popular preordered dish during the Pesach season is the traditional brisket in gravy, followed by chicken marsala, and the amazing non-gebrokts noodle kugels. Grand & Essex’s menu includes all the familiar heimishe dishes your Bubba cooked as well as more contemporary tastes like Chinese food and vegetable gnocchi.

Deliveries go out a couple of days before Yom Tov, delivered to the (fridge) door with no stress and no sweat. The chef here is proud of his rich, heimishe golden chicken soup and the fish section boasts no less than eight varieties of salmon.

Getting Pesach Into Gear

Inside the shining kitchen of Grand & Essex, with brand new pots and a dedicated Pesach fryer, 20 workers, many of them Chassidish young men, work under a Head Chef. Knives fly through finely-diced onions and apples emerge peeled and sliced at a dizzying speed. And the smell! Fragrant fried chicken and sweet, peppery Yerushami kugel. Piquant sweet and sour salmon. You might not expect to see General Tso’s chicken or pepper steak over Pesach, but actually, they’re hot items on the menu here. While last year’s Chol Hamoed saw lines out of the door for the fresh Chinese food.

I’m talking to Yitzy Elbaum, the Director of Culinary Operations at Grand & Essex, who presides over this high-end heimishe takeout in Bergenfield, New Jersey. “Nine years ago, when I came to work here, we did 20 Pesach orders; last year we prepared over 14,000 portions of protein and 3,000 pounds of potato kugel.” Gefilte fish, too? Yitzy laughs. “Yes! A ridiculous amount of it.”

“It’s my favorite week of the year,” Yitzy says, and I’m a little envious of his sheer unflappability. Then again, he took notes and absorbed feedback last year and every year before that on how to perfect the process. He’s been planning the Pesach cooking operation for three to four months. By now, it’s running like a well-rehearsed symphony. To break it down to basics, the plan is to first cook, then spread out and refrigerate the food, freeze it, and finally pack the orders.

First, obviously, they turn over the kitchen. “We have nine or ten people working on turning over our kitchen for two days straight. This year, on Wednesday evening April 5th, we’ll pack away our chometz utensils. On Thursday and Friday our team will do the hard physical labor of cleaning, and on Sunday the mashgiach will come down to kasher, so we are all set up for Pesach by Sunday night.”

The packing stations see thousands of 9x13 pans lined up and placed in special cartons. With 170 items on the menu, workers are paying attention to the details of each customer’s order, so it’s not surprising that the customer retention rate is so high at Grand & Essex, with the clients from last year returning for another serving. Talking to Yitzy makes it clear he knows how to think like a customer. “I came up with the idea of putting each 9 x 13 pan into a box, so the customer gets something presentable, just like I’d like to receive my food.”

A Satisfying Season

Like everything Pesach-related, the season is short, but intense and meaningful. Orders start to trickle in before Purim, but turn into a crashing wave after Purim’s over, till the deadline, this year April 7. From one regular client who hosts 30 people for each Seder, to the young family preparing their own Yom Tov, so many rely on Grand & Essex. Then there are the bubbies who cook their signature main dishes but rely on Yitzy for hearty soups and satisfying sides, and the full-time working parents who need to be able to serve heimishe Pesach food but can’t spend days in the kitchen. Affordable Housing for Religious Groups Could See Zoning Exemptions Under NYS Bill

Hoping to increase the supply of affordable housing for members of New York’s faith-based communities, the New York State Legislature is considering a bill that would give religious groups the ability to sidestep local zoning and fast-track projects that meet certain criteria.

The bill was introduced in the State Senate this past December by Brooklyn State Senator Andrew Gounardes. Approximately four dozen legislators in the Senate and the Assembly have signed on the bill as sponsors.

If passed, the legislation would allow faith-based organizations outside the five boroughs to put up 30 to 50 multi-family housing units, with different density standards in place in New York City. The bill would give religious groups the ability to sidestep local development restrictions on their properties, with residents subject to specific income requirements.

Affordable housing has been a hot-button topic in the Assembly, and Governor Kathy Hochul has been a vocal proponent of boosting home construction in the state.

Not surprisingly, local elected officials have been anything but supportive of the bill.

“We are fed up with the constant attacks by Governor Kathy Hochul and her allies on home rule,” said County Executive Ed Day. “In fact, it would be refreshing to see support of existing local laws rather than constant assaults such as this.”

Those thoughts were echoed by Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, who said that he would oppose any bill that would overrule local laws and zoning codes, which would change the character of his town. Hoehmann noted that Clarkstown had already done studies and rezoned part of the town to bring affordable housing to areas that could support higher density.

“A one-size-fits-all approach never works,” said Hoehmann.

The bill could cut years off the building process for religious groups and would give them the ability to generate income from unused properties. It would also put any land used for affordable housing back onto local communities’ tax rolls.

NYS Offers Free Viewing Glasses as Eclipse Nears

The rare solar eclipse set to take place on April 8, which will have the moon appearing to block the sun for a few moments, has prompted a flurry of warnings reminding observers of the importance of wearing special viewing glasses to prevent significant eye injury.

Watching a solar eclipse involves staring directly at the sun, which can subject observers to dangerous solar ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Viewers are advised to don eclipse safety glasses, which can block nearly all the radiation associated with an eclipse, in order to prevent retinal damage that can be irreversible. Regular sunglasses and cameras do not protect the eye from injury.

New York State will be distributing ISO certified eclipse glasses at more than two dozen welcome centers and service stations along the New York State Thruway, including the Moynihan Train Hall in Manhattan, the Ardsley service area on I-87 and the Catskills Welcome Center at Woodbury Commons’ Market Hall 13. Eclipse enthusiasts are limited to two pairs of New York’s I LOVE NY glasses, which are available while supplies last. Free glasses are also being offered by eyewear giant Warby Parker as of April 1, with two pairs available per family while supplies last.

“The total solar eclipse will be a once-in-a-generation experience for our state, and it’s critical that New Yorkers have the tools and information to enjoy it safely,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “From heightening awareness of scams to providing thousands of New Yorkers with eclipse glasses, I’m focused on giving everyone the resources they need to safely experience this extraordinary event.”

While the local area is not within the eclipse’s path of totality, which will have the moon completely obscuring the sun, the partial view is still expected to be a remarkable event. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the eclipse will be at its peak in Monsey at 3:25 p.m.

Expanded Move Over Law Takes Effect

New York’s amped up Move Over Law went into effect this week, part of a years-long effort to prevent deadly highway collisions

New York first enacted its Move Over Law in 2010. This

law safeguards the operators of emergency vehicles that have pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway by requiring approaching drivers to shift out of the adjacent lane. Those who were unable to change lanes safely were legally bound to lower their speed as they passed the stopped vehicle.

Since that time, the Move Over Law has been broadened several times, with motorists also required to change lanes for stopped hazard vehicles, tow trucks and trucks used by highway workers. But with 37 people killed outside disabled vehicles on state highways from 2016 to 2020, New York chose to beef up its Move Over Law, and as of March 27, it applies to any vehicle that is stopped on the side of the road.

“The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “If you see that you are approaching a disabled vehicle, slow down and move over as best as you can to give them some space.”

According to the National Highway Transportation Administration, all 50 states have Move Over laws in place, yet a third of all Americans are unaware of them.

“You never know when you may need to pull over, but when you do, we want to make sure you can do so without putting yourself or others in harm’s way,” said Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Mark Schroeder. “Each of us is responsible for doing our part to prevent tragedies on our roadways, so please follow the law. Slow down and move over when you see another vehicle stopped.”

Despite Cold Snap, Allergy Season Arrives Early

If your spring allergies seem to be kicking in ahead of schedule, know that you aren’t alone.

Despite seeing temperatures as low as the twenties last week, pollen levels are higher than typical for the season, according to a report released by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Thankfully, there are no places in New York or even New Jersey in the AAFA’s annual list of

top 20 worst cities for allergy sufferers. Wichita, Kansas, holds the number one spot in that list, with New York City coming in at 87, a ranking that categorizes it as being better than average for allergy sufferers.

Approximately one out of four adults and one out of five children suffer from seasonal allergies, also known as allergic rhinitis. Those who have allergies are advised to schedule outdoor activities for days when pollen counts are lower, to keep their windows closed, and to use air conditioners or cleaners to remove pollen from their home environments. Changing clothing after being outdoors, taking shoes off outside, and showering before bedtime are all recommended to keep indoor pollen levels at an absolute minimum.

“This season has been so nuts,” Chicago allergist Dr. Rachna Shah told the Associated Press

Dr. Shah had been surprised to see tree pollen rising as far back as mid-February, well ahead of schedule.

“Granted, it was a pretty mild winter, but I didn’t expect it to be so early,” said Dr. Shah.

Shell Pivoting Toward Electric, Shutting 1,000 Gas Stations

With more and more people trading in their gas-powered vehicles for electric models and potential state and federal mandates looming, Shell Plc is changing its business model to accommodate the expected need.

Shell expects its current number of 54,000 electric vehicle public chargers to hit 200,000 by 2030. The company will also shut down 500 retail locations in both 2024 and 2025.

“We are upgrading our retail network, with expanded vehicle charging and convenience offers, in response to changing customer needs,” said Shell in a transition strategy statement.

Shell did not elaborate on which retail sites might be shuttered, but did say that it plans to roll out its new charging stations in China and Europe in response to consumer demand for electric vehicles.

Recap: Barry, Yoel’s lawyer, posts bail and gets Yoel out of jail. Kristina, Russy’s seamstress, catches sight of Yoel and Barry when they return.

Chavi woke up to a very gray and very cold day. The minute she opened her eyes in the morning, the shame came rushing back in overwhelming waves.

There was only half an hour to the first bus. It was the perfect morning to really yell. To bellow commands. To shoo kids off to school with missing snacks and skipped breakfasts. She didn’t care if her children were tired and she’d promised to let them go late to school today. Every child would go to school and playgroup on time.

But first, the doorbell. Glenda, the cleaning help, was standing there and Google-translating an entire jumbled message about Chavi’s mother not an-

swering the door. Chavi resignedly let her into her house.

Ah. The pleasure of having a cleaning lady underfoot.

After she sent the kids off, she would call her mother and straighten it all out. It wasn’t like her mother to linger in bed. She probably overslept after the siyum because she, like Chavi, couldn’t fall asleep after what Zevi had done.

That same Zevi was now bouncing up and down on his bed, still in pajamas, while teasing Ruchelle about the hole in her tights. The familiar overwhelming helplessness compounded her morning stress.

And now, with Glenda around, she couldn’t even yell. She switched to her sweet, icy voice instead.

By the time the miracle happened and Sori was off to playgroup, Chavi felt as if she’d lived through a full, gru-

eling week.

She did the cowardly thing and headed straight back to bed. Glenda would take care of the house, there was leftover siyum food for supper. Bless Shloimy for having had the presence of mind to take home some foil-covered pans when all she’d wanted to do was disappear.

She’d call her mother later.

Under her covers, she stretched her legs the way her personal trainer always taught her to do when her calf muscles were tight. Then she turned to the right and allowed her thoughts to wander until they weren’t no longer coherent.

“Hello Mrs. Havi!” she said as soon as Chavi opened the door.

“Hi,” Chavi said coldly. “Do I have an appointment with you today?”

Kristina nodded, a wicked glint in her eye, enjoying every moment of the guessing game. That’s when Chavi remembered Glenda’s early morning appearance.

“Is my mother alive? Did she have an accident? A robbery?”

“Honestly, I don’t know,” Kristina said. “Just so many papers and books messed up in the house.” She dropped her voice. “To me it seemed like there was an investigation. But you didn’t hear it from me.”

“Listen,” Kristina said, clearly delighted at Chavi’s interest. She leaned forward. “I need you to know something without me telling you”

Kristina peered above her aqua colored glasses directly at Chavi. “Are you okay?” She didn’t wait for an answer, but gently nudged Chavi toward the kitchen.

“What happened, Mrs. Havi? Tell me.”

“Nothing happened. We had a big party yesterday, and I’m just tired.”

“Interesting,” Kristina paused. “What happened to your family at that party? First your mother, then your father, then you.”

“My father?”

Kristina smacked her lips.

“Listen,” she said, clearly delighted at Chavi’s interest. She leaned forward until the smell of smoke was a physical presence in the air. “I need you to know something without me telling you.”

Definitely not design a dress. And anyway, from Kristina’s detailed explanation — which, of course, never happened — all of her sewing materials were stuck at her mother’s house.

The phone rang. Was it her mother?

Instead, her caller ID started singing, “Call from Yeshivath Toras Mayim.”

Not more bad news today, please. But what else would a call from Zevi’s cheder be?

It was Rabbi Mandelbaum, the menahel. “Mrs. Schon?”

“Yes?” She could hear a commotion in the background.

“Hatzolah is here, and Zevi has a rusty nail in his foot. I think you should come get him.”

“A nail?” Chavi asked. “Where did he get hold of a nail?”

“We have the same question, Mrs. Schon. And I’m afraid Zevi knows the answer.”

Chavi’s breathing quickened. Kristina looked on with interest from her

perch on the island. “Okay. I’ll come get him,” she said.

“Good,” the principal said, but he wasn’t done. “And I want to add, Zevi won’t be allowed back to cheder until we come up with a plan.”

Yoel didn’t talk much. He followed Barry meekly to the living room and looked around, dazed.

“Yoel,” Russy whispered. Her voice was hoarse and timid. He didn’t hear her.

“Yoel!” she repeated a bit louder.

“Yes?” he said, annoyed.

“Uh, do you want something to eat?” She picked up a safety pin from Kristina’s pile on the table and opened and closed it.

“No.”

“A drink?”

He shook his head, not meeting her

family to — uh…”

Barry chuckled. “Your wife is right. Go take a shower.”

“I can’t,” he said. “Learning hour with my kids now.”

Barry took the opportunity to back away.

Russy gawked as Yoel straightened his back, went to his study and picked the Gemara from the shelf and sat down at his desk. “New masechta today,” he said to Russy.

She nodded. At least he was talking to her. He picked up the phone just as the front door burst open.

“Hello, Tatty!” Chuni called. He was followed by Yosef Yehuda.

“A new masechta today!” Chuni sang. They entered the study holding their Gemaras. “A new masechta has to be started right!”

“Yes!” Yoel said. “Great.”

They brushed past Russy — “Hi Ma, good to see you” — and settled around the desk.

“Hatzolah is here, and Zevi has a rusty nail in his foot. I think you should come get him”

“A shower?” she tried again. She snapped the pin open and closed, open and closed, more and more quickly.

“I can take care of myself,” he mut-

Barry cleared his throat, presumably to remind them of his presence. “Joel, I’ll be going now. You need a good night’s sleep, and tomorrow we’ll get cracking.”

“You can’t go!” Yoel came alive. “We have to start now.”

Russy could see the sheer terror in his eyes. She was also terrified of Barry leaving.

Barry looked Yoel in the eye. “Joel, we won’t accomplish anything after such a long day. Don’t worry. You have our entire team on board. We have a great case, and I have clout with the courts. We’ll get this over and done with by…” He checked his phone calendar. “I think we can be done by spring.”

“Spring?” Yoel said. “This place is full of snow! I have a business to run, a

And just like that, they started the new masechta. She stood at the doorway, watching her husband field questions and take compliments for yesterday’s siyum as if he’d spent the entire day in the office or tanning in the sun.

After a few minutes she slipped away. She knew Yoel would be furious if her kids saw the living room.

On autopilot, she collected the plaques, put the documents in a pile, and hid it in a drawer. She straightened the armchairs and headed to the kitchen to boil water for tea.

And once she was done, she could simply disappear and no one would care.

1 lb. chicken cutlets, cut into strips

Wondermills flour, for dredging

2 eggs

2–3 T. barbecue sauce

2 (7 oz.) bags Bissli, crushed (I used pizza and barbecue)

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375°.

2. Coat chicken strips in flour.

3. Combine eggs with barbecue sauce

4. Coat the chicken in egg mixture, then in Bissli crumbs

5. Place on a lined metal sheet pan, and bake for 20 minutes.

BARBECUE DIPPING SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

½ cup mayonnaise

3 T. barbecue sauce

1 T. yellow mustard

1 T. honey

DIRECTIONS

Mix to combine.

MAPLE PRETZEL CHICKEN

These phone calls are all in a day’s work for those matching up cleaning help with local Yiddishe women — a job that isn’t for the faint of heart.

In honor of the pre-Pesach race to clean our homes, The Monsey View spoke with three women in the tristate area who have taken upon themselves the position of matchmaker extraordinaire.

HADASSAH STEINMAN

BY THE BOOK

While some agencies keep track of all the moving parts on a spreadsheet or calendar, Baila Schoenfeld, a one-woman agency who does this work as a chesed, uses good old pen and paper to keep track of the cleaning ladies whose schedules she manages. She divides a few letter-size sheets of papers into four, with each quarter page listing a different lady’s schedule, slips the sheets into sheet protectors, and voila! A shadchan is born.

“I get calls all the time from people looking for cleaning help,” says Rechy Freund, another woman running an agency, “and once I can fill up a half-week’s worth of work, I hire a cleaning lady to fill those hours. Sooner or later, the rest of the slots get filled, and then she’s fully employed.”

Most agencies will want all arrangements or changes of schedule to go through them.

“Women should know,” says Toby Davidson, another cleaning help matchmaker, “that when they ask their cleaning help to stay on longer, they are probably cutting into the hours of another woman waiting for the cleaning lady’s help. I know most of them don’t intend for that to happen, but these things happen by mistake.”

SPLITTING THE WATER BUCKET SEA

“I see Hashem’s hand every single day,” says Rechy. “Sometimes I look at a half-filled schedule and say, ‘Hashem, please help me out here and fill this lady’s schedule so we can gain from her services,’ and somehow, He always does. It’s a puzzle of preferences and needs that somehow always works out.”

The agencies all have dozens of stories to prove this point. As one example, a woman once called Rechy, desperate for help that very minute. There was no one available at the time — why would there be, smack in the middle of the day, when all of Rechy’s cleaning ladies were fully employed? — but a few minutes later, a woman who had a cleaning lady in her home that very minute called.

When they ask their cleaning help to stay on longer, they are probably cutting into the hours of another woman waiting for the cleaning lady’s help

Do agencies provide training for their cleaning ladies, or do they only match them up with employers?

“I only do the shidduchim,” says Baila. “If I hear from a few women that a cleaning lady really has no idea how to clean, I advise her to get trained and ask her to come back to me when she knows how to do a better job.”

The streets are flooded with immigrants looking for work these days. Does that mean that there’s less of a need for agencies to do the work?

Rechy is emphatic. “Absolutely not. Our community has exploded, ka”h, so the demand is up as well. Also, people like to know that someone is arranging their cleaning help, and that they don’t have to worry about chasing down cleaning ladies who may or may not be available.”

“Myra is being so annoying today!” she said, irritated. “I don’t know why she’s suddenly getting under my skin. Please, just get her out of the way! Can we do that right now?”

Well, normally they couldn’t, Rechy says, not in the middle of the workday. In this case, however, they made an exception. The woman in whose house Myra was in wished her good-bye, and Myra went straight to the house where the homemaker had been desperate enough to beg for cleaning help for that very minute.

“I feel like I just start making basic arrangements, and then the rest falls into place,” Rechy says. “I have these stories every day; the hashgacha is so clear. I could never manage this puzzle on my own.”

Recently, someone called Toby and asked for a specific

cleaning lady, Lily, on Monday mornings. Of course, Toby told her that it wasn’t possible; Lily was a top cleaning lady and fully employed, and Toby wasn’t going to take her away from others.

However, a day or so passed, and the woman who employed Lily Monday mornings decided from one minute to the next that she doesn’t want Mondays anymore, and could Toby please find her someone for Wednesday. Of course, Toby matched her up with someone, and the following Monday, Lily went straight to the first caller.

The punchline to this story is that the woman who suddenly decided to switch to Wednesday changed her mind a few weeks later and switched back to Mondays. Obviously,

the first caller was meant to get Lily, even if her neighbor had to change her mind twice to make that happen.

“I’ve also had such stories,” Baila says. “Someone once called to tell me that she gave her cleaning lady extra hours on Thursday evening and wanted to cancel for Friday — something that hardly ever happens. Ten minutes later, a random woman called me and asked for cleaning help for that Friday.”

In an opposite story, someone once called her to say that she’d like more hours than usual on Friday. Then her partner, the woman with whom she shared the cleaning lady’s hours on Friday, called Baila to say that she was going out of town, so she didn’t need the cleaning lady that Friday at all.

“Now you tell me,” says Rechy. “Isn’t it obvious that Hashem takes care of us? It says in the Gemara that Hashem spends his time making shidduchim. It must mean these shidduchim as well — this one needs less, the other will need more; the first will want later, the second will want earlier. The hashgacha pratis is so clear.”

In one final story, a woman reached out to Rechy frantically, saying that she was heading to Connecticut for an

While we should all treat our cleaning help with respect and kindness, we would do well to remember that we’re letting strangers into our homes.

“Sometimes the temptation is too great,” says Toby. “We once found a top cleaning lady stealing. Hetty was the fastest, the friendliest, the most responsible cleaning lady, and everyone wanted her. Then, at some point, people were finding things missing. One was missing $100, the other one was finding that her husband’s socks were slowly disappearing. A third one was sure that Hetty had helped herself to cash from a wallet.”

Eventually, one woman after another canceled, until Hetty realized that Toby had no work for her anymore, and that was that.

In short, don’t leave cash or valuables lying around. It just invites trouble.

“The same with leaving your cleaning lady alone in your house,” Rechy adds. “It’s a serious shailah, one you should ask your rav. As amazing as your cleaning lady may be, you can’t be sure that she won’t use your kosher microwave when you’re out of the house.”

There are many stories out there, involving even the most devoted cleaning ladies. Be kind, but be careful.

“The problem here was that this woman had her cleaning lady in the middle of the day, so it wasn’t like the cleaning lady could simply end her day early,” Rechy explains. “This really put me in a pickle. How would I fill her day? Of course, a few minutes later someone called to request cleaning help for exactly those hours, and once again, the puzzle was complete.”

THE HUMAN FACTOR

When we invite a cleaning lady into our homes, Toby says, the most important thing is to remember to treat her like a fellow human being, and to make a kiddush Hashem

“It’s pretty sad that I need to say this,” she says, “but please REMEMBER TO SPEAK NICELY to your cleaning lady. You shouldn’t raise your voice at anyone, and certainly not at her.”

If you aren’t happy with your cleaning help, you can always tell her not to come back; you didn’t sign a contract of any sort when hiring her. But whatever you do, treat her like a fellow human being.

Rechy always tells women to REMEMBER TO OFFER FOOD TO THEIR CLEANING LADIES. While you might find yourself forgetting to eat on busy days, there should be no such thing as forgetting that the cleaning lady has to eat.

“Of course,” she adds, “this doesn’t mean that you should begin the morning with a full meal. Your cleaning lady shouldn’t be expecting to receive breakfast from you; she should be eating that at home. But if it’s a cold morning, after she gets started on the house, offer her a hot coffee. She needs it.”

And if she stuffs whatever food you give her into her bag, Baila says wryly, well, there’s no need to keep that up either. No need to empty your pantry to fill hers.

Also, HAVE EXACT CHANGE READY

Women often complain about this,” Toby says. “‘Ugh, she doesn’t have change.’ But your Hilda might be afraid to walk around with money on her. So please, be ready with exact change, and don’t get annoyed when she can’t break your hundred dollar bill.”

Baila mentions another point: BE CONSIDERATE OF HER TIME.

“And a few cookies or a little cereal doesn’t quite cut it,” she adds. “For those who claim they don’t have food in the house, would you rather she bring along treif food?”

Make sure to have frozen pizza in the house, or noodle soup, and give your cleaning lady a few quiet minutes to eat. She’s a human being who needs sustenance, and you’re the one who will benefit.

On the same note, Baila says that if you’re doing some cooking, be a mensch and offer her some of it. Imagine work-

“Someone once called me to tell me that her cleaning lady was fifteen minutes late. When I called her partner, who had the cleaning lady first, she told me, ‘Oh, Sonia must be waiting for her taxi.’ This meant that Sonia just lost a halfhour of paid time. We’re not here to throw Yiddish gelt at them, but we shouldn’t begrudge them their dollar either.”

This translates into making sure that their ride is ready and waiting as soon as their work is done so they don’t lose time waiting. Baila tries to provide work for her cleaning

ladies in the area where they’re already working so they don’t have to cross town to get to their next job.

The next directive, shared by Toby, will benefit the employer as much as — or even more than — the cleaning lady involved: BE SPECIFIC IN YOUR INSTRUCTIONS.

One woman may get annoyed when the cleaning lady doesn’t wipe down the moldings every week, while her neighbor just wants her cleaning help to run through her entire house before Shabbos, and not worry about the moldings or light fixtures until Pesach.

“I once had someone complain that her cleaning lady doesn’t put pajamas in the hamper when she makes the beds,” Toby shares. “Well, her cleaning lady’s other employer may not want her to make the beds in the first place; she might just want the sinks cleared, the playroom tidied up, and the bathrooms cleaned. How was the cleaning lady supposed to know to do things differently in this house if she wasn’t told?”

You can’t blame a cleaning lady for doing the wrong thing if you aren’t clear about what you’d like. Show her around and explain what you’d like her to do. Best yet, work alongside her; this will get you double mileage, Rechy says.

Especially now before Pesach, explain what you want and why. Your cleaning lady has no idea why she’s suddenly expected to empty kitchen cabinets and wipe them out — what about the laundry and bathrooms? Be specific, and be patient. This may be her first encounter with Pesach cleaning; make it the smoothest experience it could possibly be.

By way of quick recap, Sweet Motherhood ran in this space as a series of articles last winter, garnering lots of positive feedback.

As a motherhood coach and a super-busy mother of children ranging from ages one to fourteen, Faigy K. has implemented basic systems and procedures in her house that reflect her genius methods and practicality. She tackled topics ranging from Friday schedules to nighttime routines — struggles that most of us, busy Yiddishe mothers, deal with all the time.

In the throes of the hectic Purim and Pesach season, it’s hard to imagine sunny skies and a sparkling swimming pool. But it did happen to me back in August. On one such glorious Friday morning at the pool, a woman said, “You know, I would never have imagined that I could join a swimming group on Friday mornings. Fridays were so tough, but now my Fridays are relaxed, and it’s actually a good day for me to get out.”

A chorus of “me too” echoed, and was soon followed by animated conversation about Sweet Motherhood’s Friday afternoon schedule. One woman had set up little piggy banks on a shelf, and when the kids finished their Shabbos jobs, they filled their banks with coins, which were later spent at the ice cream store. A different mother allowed her children to choose bakery treats, and one of them baked special Friday danishes for her crew.

“My kids actually like their jobs,” one woman said. “They know what they have to do, and they’re so proud to cross items off their to-do list.

So you see, ladies, these methods work! I can’t wait to meet you Erev Pesach in the supermarket looking calm and serene as you purchase yet another roll of paper towel and another case of yogurt pouches.

When the panic sets in, don’t worry. Let me remind you that we had an entire extra month to tackle the closets. (Kidding!)

Okay, so now I’m convinced. If they lend a hand, my kids will feel accomplished, will get great training, and will have the opportunity to do mitzvos. So worth it.

But how do I get them to help?

The answer doesn’t lie in how to get them to help; instead, make them want to help. Follow me for some amazing tips on how to get your kids interested in helping. These ideas work for children ages seven and up.

An Erev Pesach checklist for cleaning a drawer would look like this:

Empty drawer contents onto bed.

Vacuum the corners of the drawer.

Open each pair of tights, check for holes, and place torn tights off to the side.

Fold all tights that are still in good condition.

On the pile of “holy” tights, put anything else you didn’t wear all year, and place complete pile on the laundry room counter (for Mommy to inspect).

Fold everything neatly.

Put everything back into the drawer.

Great job! Grab a square of chocolate.

Children dislike endless jobs, and breaking it down to a doable checklist will work wonders for most children. In fact, it can work wonders for adults, too, because we all know that satisfying feeling of checking something off a list, even if it’s as simple as “call the dentist.”

WHO KNOWS LAUNDRY?

Mundane, everyday tasks don’t fade away when the potato cases arrive. Kids don’t miraculously get bathed, and the younger ones don’t get supervised by little elves.

But all the older ones want to be where the action is, namely the turned-over kitchen or Pesach kitchen. They want to flip crepes, get those egg whites to stiffen and blend the sorbets.

Faigy has a simple yet effective solution: Work in twohour shifts. In the morning, each child selects which two hours they’ll be spending in the kitchen, and which two hours they’ll be entertaining the kids or running errands.

REWARDING TEAM PLAYERS

No one remains a team player if it’s all drudgery. You’re asking them to pitch in like adults — treat them as such.

Ask for their opinions on desserts, dishes or clothing. Include them in those late-night adult suppers with turkey sandwiches, sushi, slush or burgers. (Because freezer-burnt holoptches just won’t do, sorry. Same goes for the gluten-free breaded cutlets you made when you were in the gluten-free mode.)

THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE

How does one deal with a child who is less inclined toward housework? Ask them which jobs they prefer. Showing empathy goes a long way toward building a team. In the same vein, ask them which rewards, treats or privileges they’d like to earn.

Do give them a mix of jobs because, as we’ve established, they’re mommies-in-training, but try to keep the jobs they dislike to a minimum.

The first time I spent Shabbos with my in-laws after my wedding, I was hit by a pleasant and surprising smell: Mr. Clean.

How? I wondered. How did her house smell so good on Shabbos afternoon?

The answer was in a bucket in the bathtub.

“I leave some Mr. Clean in there before Shabbos,” my mother-in-law revealed. “That way the house smells fresh and clean the whole Shabbos.”

With children soon filling up our home, this wasn’t a safe habit for me to adopt. Still, I was charmed by the idea. Smells are strongly linked with memories, and until today, the smell of Mr. Clean makes me nostalgic for the shana rishonah era of my life. The popular cleaning products in

my house come along with different associations. St. Moritz reminds me of my first attempt at Yerushalmi kugel, when I got a little over-eager with the sugar browning. Windex reminds me of the four-section mirrored medicine chest in my childhood home. Murphy Oil Soap reminds me of Francis, our cleaning help for nearly two decades. And Fantastik makes dusty memories of stapled wires come out of the woodwork, literally. With Pesach upon us, take a glimpse at the perks and quirks of our tried and trusted cleaning products.

Mr. Clean

He’s the most welcome figure in our homes, but is he a real person?

This famous mascot was modeled on a real person, Robert House Peters Jr., who appeared in Mr. Clean ads beginning in 1958.

The mascot’s look says it all: muscular arms folded across his chest to show his robust power, bald pate to represent the smooth, shiny surfaces that the product is meant to create, and a single earring for a magical touch. In a New York Times obituary for Richard Black, the original illustrator, the product Mr. Clean was referenced as the “genie in a bottle.”

Balabustas the world over certainly agree. This fluorescent liquid has a tendency to magically appear just when it’s needed.

Clorox

A necessary evil — that’s what I call the bottle of bleach that I keep out of reach of children at all times.

Truthfully, I should be keeping it out of reach from myself, too, after suffering too many bleach-related accidents.

But nothing disinfects like old-fashioned bleach does, so on a schmatte and a prayer, I allow the chemicals to do their work.

Clorox goes back a long way. The Electro-Alkaline Company was founded in 1913, manufacturing Clorox, the first commercial-scale liquid bleach in the United States. In 1957, Clorox was purchased by Procter & Gamble. The original brand packaging featured a diamondshaped logo, which has been used in one form or another in Clorox branding ever since.

The name Clorox was coined as a portmanteau of its two main ingredients, chlorine and sodium hydroxide. During World War II, government rationing of chlorine gas forced many bleach manufacturers to reduce the concentration of sodium hypochlorite in their products. Clorox, however, declined to follow suit and instead elected to sell fewer units of full-strength bleach, establishing a reputation for uncompromised quality.

Growing up, Tide was always the first item on our Costco shopping list. When I went to camp, the smell of this laundry detergent was a delightful reminder of home.

Tide’s popularity definitely wasn’t born of hype. In 1946, Procter & Gamble introduced Tide to test markets as the “new washday miracle.” Within weeks, Tide outsold every other brand, forcing storeowners to limit the number of boxes each customer could buy. Over the next 21 years, Procter & Gamble improved the Tide formula 22 times.

Tide dominates the liquid-detergent market with more than twice the number of sales as the second-most-popular brand, Gain, despite its inflated cost.

In some areas, Tide has become such a hot commodity that criminals steal it from stores to resell. Police call the detergent “liquid gold” on the black market, and it has been known to be traded or sold for illegal drugs.

In a 2009 survey, consumers ranked Tide among the three brands they would least likely give up during the Great Recession.

Goddard’s

There’s nothing as beautiful as gleaming Shabbos silver — and nothing as off-putting as a badly tarnished candelabra.

It may not be my most desirable chore, but I find myself reaching for Goddard’s silver polish on many Motzei Shabbosos.

Established in 1839, the brand is named for its founder, Joseph Goddard, a chemist who lived in Leicester, England. Goddard developed a deep appreciation for beautiful silver and was frequently called upon to appraise fine silver owned by England’s wealthy families. His career was challenged when electroplated silver pieces became more popular and more affordable to the average person. Polishes at that time performed poorly. After many attempts, Goddard perfected a silver polish that would safely remove tarnish from any silver piece. His products won six gold medals for excellence at the 1885 American Exposition.

When using Goddard’s silver polish, it’s best to allow the polish to dry before wiping it off with a clean, soft cloth.

When it comes to more ornate pieces, rinse with water and dry it well.

Windex

Back in the day, housewives used vinegar water and crumpled newspaper to clean their windows. Today Windex is like an extension to my arm. I reach for it multiple times a day to wipe down my glass dinette table or to remove fingerprints from windows.

Philip Drackett introduced Windex Glass Cleaner in 1936 as an automobile windshield cleaner. In 1992, SC Johnson acquired The Drackett Company, bringing the Windex brand into the SC Johnson family of brands — and into every family’s home, as far as I know.

Like seltzer, Windex was originally sold in glass containers. (I’m imagining the ammonia smell that permeated homes when that bottle cracked.) The glass cleaner’s original color was yellow. Today Windex is available in sunshine lemon, citrus orange, but is probably most popular in the ocean fresh blue.

Well Done — St. Moritz

I hate the smell, and I hate what it does to my hands if they accidentally come in contact with this fire of a detergent. Yet nothing removes grease from stoves or burnt residue from pots the way this degreaser does. Well Done Kft. is a Hungarian company (why am I not shocked?) that manufactures household detergents. Their factory was established in the city of Komárom in 1996. The company’s belief is that a good detergent cleans effectively without any elbow grease.

The trick with using St. Moritz is to give it time. Spray up your stove, oven or pot, go away (as in, leave the kitchen along with the rest of the family and leave the windows open), and return to find that the most stubborn grease has practically slid off.

There’s a bottle resting on the counter next to each sink; I rarely have a chance to put it away. Palmolive is a dishwashing soap that does its job, no questions asked.

The Palmolive brand grew from one product: Palmolive bar soap. Made of coconut palm and olive oils — hence the name — Palmolive bar soap was introduced in 1898. By the turn of the 20th century, Palmolive bar soap was the world’s best-selling soap.

Palmolive became very popular through extensive marketing campaigns. The company boasted that their product was the best and cheapest soap on the market at ten cents a bar, money back guaranteed. One ad promoted the product as the type of soap that would have been favored in ancient Egypt by the Pharaohs and especially by “the Pharaoh’s daughter.” Hmm, talk about a far-reaching arm.

Short of sending agents to houses to wash their dishes, they’ve done everything right. Their success turned the corner when they merged with Peet Brothers Soap Company in 1926, and with Colgate Co. in 1928. As of February 22, 2024, Colgate-Palmolive Company has a market cap of $70.22 billion.

It causes your heart rate to accelerate. Your throat constricts, and your breathing becomes shallow and labored.

No, it is not a heart attack you are experiencing, but rather something that has become somewhat of an epidemic among Jewish women. It is the mere thought of Pesach cleaning.

You thought you’re the only one who panics, huh? It may seem as if all of your sisters-in-law and neighbors have it under control, but under many a Jewish mother’s perfect veneer lies the monster named pre-Pesach anxiety. Thinking about those tiny crumbs can get the most placid of us women worked up.

Is there a way to get through this momentous

task without experiencing brain freeze? Is it possible to stay sane? It absolutely is.

Before I start dispensing some essential tips on “How to hack your way through Pesach cleaning,” let’s get one thing straight: Most of the cleaning we do is not Pesach cleaning! Dust isn’t chometz Halacha mandates that one wash their floors and checks all pockets and corners for crumbs. (And maybe some more, but not much more.) You knew that, didn’t you? But you need to hear it again. I know because I need to read this again myself.

So if you want to be proper, this article is more of a “spring cleaning guide.”

Now that that’s out of the way, we can get started.

The first order of business is to sit down with a calendar. No, we’re not shaking it free of crumbs. This calendar is to become your trusty guide to prioritizing and staying on track. Flip to the week of Pesach, and mark the day you would like to kasher or open your Pesach kitchen. Then, working backward, follow the basic outline below, and fill in what you are planning to clean each day in order of importance or viability to clean (e.g., kitchen cabinets, fridge, ovens) until you reach today’s date.

If you’ve managed to include “clean the storage boxes and garage” and other tasks we won’t be covering in this guide, you know you have time for these extras. If these items didn’t realistically fit into your plan, be smart and skip them right now!

Here’s the breakdown of how we’ll be cleaning your lovely abode over the next four weeks:

This week’s tasks won’t yet be taking you into true chometz zones, so breathe easy!

Walls

Remember how your science teacher asked, “What is the biggest organ of your body?” and you were stumped? The correct answer was your epidermis, your skin.

Well, let’s try this in the homemaker’s version:. “What is the biggest and largest thing you have to clean?”

Hmmm?

Not your fridge, not your closets, nor is it the giant walk-in closet in your bedroom. It is… the walls and doors of your home!

Refer to the following instructions in future installments of this cleaning series. As you attack each room, remember to wash down the walls.

To give your walls a general refresh, wrap a wet shmatte with a dash of Mr. Clean or Murphy around the base of a miracle mop and “mop” your walls, gliding the up and down the walls and doors. If your walls are especially dirty, add dish soap to your Mr. Clean mixture. This cleansing solution will be way sudsier and will result in gleaming walls! Don’t forget dusty corners, and even your dusty light fixtures if you’re feeling particularly intrepid.

Use a magic sponge for tougher spots. (Try this first on a small area to make sure it doesn’t rub off your paint finish.)

Fill another basin with clean water, and dip a rag into that. Wring and place on your cleaning stick, and wipe away the soapy mixture. No need to be perfect in your motions; streaks won’t stay.

BONUS TIP: Put a couple of drops of essential oil into your cleansing solution before you start for a great-smelling room.

Once your wall moldings are dry, rub a dryer sheet on them to repel future dirt and dust.

For window and door screens, run a lint roller up and down the screen to catch all the stuck fibers.

Master Bedroom

Let’s start with the closets. Since you don’t serve dinner in your bedroom, these spaces generally don’t require more than a customary wipe to eliminate dust. There’s no need for heavy-duty bleach-dipped rags; a wipe of Windex or any other cleanser spray will do. I prefer Windex (which contains ammonia, a really good cleaning agent) over a wet rag dipped in soapy water, as the latter requires you to wait for the surface to air dry before returning the items to the shelves and wastes precious time. We want to clean as quickly and efficiently as possible.

However, if your wooden furniture won’t do well with Windex, try white vinegar instead. Nothing beats white vinegar to remove stains and impurities from varnished wood. It instantly dissolves all dirt and brings the wood back to life. Combine white vinegar with a bit of water in an empty spray bottle, and use as you would Windex. We’ll use this to continue wiping down the rest of the bedroom furniture. Spray, wipe, done.

In your closets, remove the clothes from the shelves, give the shelf a quick spritz, wipe it down, and put the clothes back.

If your nightstand drawer is full of stuff, take ten minutes to organize the accumulated jumble (think phone chargers and Tylenol) by dividing the contents into small lidless organizing containers.

Get your trusty vacuum cleaner out to clean your mattresses. Suction the dust out, flip to the underside and repeat. If your mattresses rest on wooden bed frames, continue with the vacuum cleaner and use it to refresh all those dusty spaces. Alternatively, if you’ve got metal frames, a wet rag should do the job.

Do some of your dresser drawers or closet space double as a home office? Time to sort that out. Tax papers need not be kept for more than 22 months. If you’re self-employed, the number rises to five years. If you own a proper business, the tax papers should be in the business office, not your home!

As for bank statements, trash them all! These days, your bank graciously stores your files digitally without taking up an inch of space anywhere. Just sign up for paperless statements, and if you ever need to refer back to a fiscal period, all it requires is a simple request for the PDF. As for those statements from the times before digital files, it’s time to stop chewing over your grocery bill from 27 years ago. Bread has gone up since.

Kids’ Bedrooms

Though you change your children’s linen often, their mattresses probably require a deep clean. Fill an empty spice bottle with baking soda (add a few drops of essential oil if you have some on hand) and sprinkle over the bare mattress. Allow it to sit for an hour, and then vacuum it all up. Yes, one of the key ingredients in your chometz cakes will make the mattresses clean for Pesach by eliminating odors and removing dirt, dust and skin cells. For tougher stains, combine equal amounts of white vinegar and water with a bit of dish soap. Spray the solution onto the stain and let it sit for five to ten minutes before dabbing with a dry cloth. Once the mattress is fully air-dried, cover it with a waterproof protector to avoid having to spot clean it in the years to come.

Organizer’s Hack

When cleaning and sorting your children’s coloring and activity supplies, store them in a hanging shoe organizer that has clear pockets. Hang the shoe organizer on a hook inside your toy closet door, whether it’s in their bedroom or playroom. Place all crayons in one pocket, markers in the next, packs of stickers in another, and do the same for glue sticks, pens and small scissors. This makes it easy for the kids to access their supplies and put them away on their own. And it looks so neat!

As for the seforim room, I only have one piece of advice to offer: Leave it to the men. You don’t want to mess with the sense of “order” going on there. I will never forget the time I decided to take matters into my own hands and sorted the overwhelming stack of papers stashed on the bookshelves. Calendars from 2016, 2017 and 2018? Those surely deserved to be binned, I thought. Until my husband asked me if I had perhaps seen his calendar from 2016. The last page contained his bank account verification code, and without that, he was locked out of his account. How efficient do you think I felt right then?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE NATURAL CLEANING HACK?

IF WAX DRIPS ONTO CLOTHING, PLACE A PAPER BAG ON TOP OF THE WAX AND IRON IT. THE WAX WILL STICK TO THE PAPER BAG AND LEAVE THE FABRIC PERFECTLY CLEAN.

I MIX VINEGAR AND WATER AND USE INSTEAD OF WINDEX.

Whenever my stainless steel pots or pans are very dirty (and I’m too lazy to scrub really hard), I put in a generous scoop of baking soda with water and boil it for a couple of minutes. The stuck-on food will soon be floating in the water. You’ll be able to clean the pot easily, and it will gleam like new.

I clean my microwave with lemon juice. Heat it up, let it sit for a few minutes to steam the interior, and then use the warm juice and a sponge to wipe down the machine.

Add some vinegar to every load of laundry – it gets rid of germs. And if you want to clean the machine itself, run an empty load with hot water and an entire bottle of lemon juice.

I like natural stuff until it comes to cleaning. To get things really clean

I need the harsher cleaning agents like St. Moritz.

My favorite natural cleaning hack is washing the floor with just water and a few drops of Woolzie’s lemon and vanilla essential oils.

The lemon oil cleans the floor and the vanilla adds a wonderful scent!

BEFORE THE MOP

As much as we don’t love mopping, what would we do without a mop? Think of all the generations before us, where balabustes had to scrub without mops.

Floors made of earth were swept with primitive makeshift brooms, a bundle of horsehair or straw tied to a stick. But for stone or marble floors, there was no way out. They needed to be mopped. Except there were no mops yet. Historians assume that people utilized bundles of rags or yarn tied to a wooden stick.

During the 1700s, mopsticks were popular with British housewives. They consisted of a simple wooden stick with a cloth or sponge attached at the end.

MOPPING IN THE MIKDASH

As you mop your mikdash me’at, did you ever wonder how the Kohanim kept the Bais Hamikdash pristine, especially with the many karbanos?

It is known that there was a river running adjacent to the Bais Hamikdash. A special dam was constructed so the river would rise high. The dam would be opened when it was time to clean the Bais Hamikdash. The river would overflow, and the cleansing waters would flow through the Bais Hamikdash, leaving it spotless and sparkling. Interestingly, the cleaning method they used involved sticks with either sponges or cloths, somewhat comparable to sponja

MEET THE MOP

In 1876 an American inventor named Charles Wheeler created the mop and bucket. The “mop” was a stick with strings attached, and he added a bucket to hold the soapy water. Dip the mop into the bucket and scrub!

Like many great inventions, this one was innovated by a disgruntled man, who wasn’t too impressed with the options available. Poor Samuel Fuller, in Cape Cod, got sick of dipping and scrubbing. So, in 1896 he came up with an innovation: attaching a sponge to a stick. Just a couple years earlier, in 1893, Thomas Stewart, one of the first African-American inventors to hold a patent, patented two improvements to the mop: He made the mop head removable so it could be washed, and he added a lever to squeeze the water out easily. (It’s not surprising that two inventors on different sides of the country were devoting their great minds to improving the mop. We all know just how much we rely on our trusty mops.)

After World War II, when the plastics industry was booming, Peter Vosbikian developed an automatic sponge mop; it used a lever to squeeze the mop dry, so it didn’t have to be wrung out by hand.

• Clean as you go by wearing deluxe mop slippers, which scrub the floor with every step you take.

• Better yet, dress your baby in the haute couture of stretchies, adorned with microfiber applique, to clean as he crawls.

• Mop from your couch with a remote-controlled mop. Just don’t lose the remote or let mischievous kids find it.

• For those really attached to their mops, mop-top pens come in all styles and colors!

DROP THE MOP

Is sponja a mop? Is it not? A subject of endless debate.

MIND YOUR MOP!

• Out of Mr. Clean? In a pinch, add a capful of mouthwash to a gallon of water, and wash away.

• Mop for an hour, burn 100 calories! (You knew scrubbing is a workout.)

• Microfiber cloths don’t just sweep, they actually attract and trap the dust.

• The term mop can be traced back to the late 1400s, originally spelled mappe in Old English.

• This is not a fun fact, it’s serious. Mop heads are removable; wash them often to kill stubborn germs!

Devastation in Baltimore as Major Bridge Collapses in Entirety

A cargo ship that had apparently lost all power crashed into a Baltimore bridge in the predawn hours on March 26, with the nearly 50-year-old span collapsing into the icy waters below in a matter of seconds.

Six construction workers who were filling potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge were presumed dead as of Tuesday afternoon, reported the Associated Press. The Dali, a 985-foot-long cargo ship that was headed for Sri Lanka, had issued a Mayday call just moments before it struck one of the span’s support columns at approximately 1:30 a.m. That call saved lives, giving officials time to close the bridge to all vehicular traffic. Footage shows cars traveling across the bridge just seconds before the fatal crash occurred.

Two construction workers were rescued from the waters of the Patapsco River, which had a reported temperature of 47 degrees at the time of the bridge collapse. Several vehicles tumbled into the water as

the span came down, but none were believed to be occupied at the time. None of the crew members of the Dali, which is believed to have been moving at nine miles per hour at the time of the crash, were injured.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was inspected last June, and while it was found to be in fair condition, it did not have adequate pier protection to withstand a crash. Roberto Leon, professor of engineering at Virginia Tech, noted that the weight of the Dali, which was loaded with containers, had it striking the bridge with significant force.

“If a bridge pier without adequate protection is hit by a ship of this size, there is very little that the bridge can do,” said Leon. More than 30,000 vehicles travel across the Francis Scott Key Bridge each day, making the fact that the collapse occurred in the middle of the night a true miracle. The bridge is part of the Baltimore Beltway, a ring road that circles the city, and vehicles have been rerouted to the I-95 and I-895 indefinitely. Trucks, which are too large to travel through the tunnels on both of these roadways, will have to take a longer route to get through the area. The impact on roadways alone is expected to affect tens of thousands of people on a daily basis.

The collapse will also create a logistical nightmare for the heavily used Port of Baltimore, a major shipping hub, with cargo ships using the port to travel to the Chesapeake Bay and then out to the Atlantic Ocean.

While Baltimore isn’t a big destination for container vessels, it is heavily used for other shipping purposes. According to Bloomberg, Baltimore is the country’s largest port for cars as well as a major destination for farming equipment. Having a significant port closed indefinitely is expected to create significant economic fallout to those industries.
