A TABLE OF TRADITION

(Re: Scrumptious Sides, Issue 266)

May I respectfully correct something your food editor wrote?

We also do not eat anything with nuts until after Musaf and Tefilas Geshem on Shemini Atzeres. However, almonds are not considered nuts, and I have successfully used them in kugels and cakes in place of nuts. Walnuts, cashews, filberts, Brazil nuts and pistachios all fall under the category of nuts. The jury is still out, and there is a running, so far unresolved, debate in our family whether peanuts are also considered nuts.

I also wanted to comment that while your recipes for side dishes are lovely, I am still not ready to give up traditional potato kugel. I did find a way to satisfy everyone’s craving for the corner piece, though! I recently served, at a sheva brachos, individual kugels baked in cupcakesize foil pans. Just make sure to spray them well with cooking spray so that they pop out easily.

NOT FOR MOST OF TISHREI

(Re: Scrumptious Sides, Issue 266)

I wanted to make your readers aware that the dipping sauce recipe for the egg rolls includes vinegar, and I think most people don’t eat vinegar these days.

I remember that I made a recipe last year for knishes (Quick-Mix Dough, Issue 213) for Rosh Hashanah, and when we realized that it has

RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS:

To use these recipes in the earlier days of Tishrei, any acidity — such as lemon or lime juice — can be used in place of the vinegar.

RE: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

(Inbox, Issue 266)

In the past issue a kind reader raised awareness that tzitzis should not be given to a non-Jewish cleaners to clean. While the reader might possibly have that minhag, and the Rema (21:3) brings that shita, the Shulchan Aruch Harav and the Mishnah Berurah both write that it’s not an issue.

Thanks for your beautiful publication.

COOKING IN ADVANCE

(Re: Scrumptions Sides, Issue 266)

The gnocchi recipe you featured looks delicious! How much in advance can I make this dish? And does it freeze well? Thank you for your help.

RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS:

The gnocchi recipe freezes beautifully! It can be frozen way in advance and then defrosted by rewarming.

(Re: Setting the School Scene, Issue 264)

Thank you for your fine publication. It’s so informative, the serial is great, the recipes easy to follow, and the formatting is impressive.

In regard to your article about Bais Rochel of old Monsey, please be advised that the Baumrinds later moved to Lakewood, where they continued in their avodas hakodesh

After the petirah of Rabbi Baumrind, z”l, Mrs. Baumrind l’havdil bein chaim l’chaim) moved to Bnei Brak where two of her children live. Rabbi Baumrind’s kever is in the Monsey cemetery right near Rabbi Mordechai Schwab, zt”l. On the metzeivah it only states: ל"צז שריה יבצ ןרהא השמ 'ר

If anyone is at the beis hachaim, please say a kapitel of Tehillim at the kever, as his children don’t live here.

Again, many thanks for your fine publication.

TREATING THOSE STUBBORN STAINS

(Re: Fitting the Clothes and Filling the Closets, Issue 263)

Thank you so much for your informative article on storing clothing postseason. I would like to share a tip for removing yellow stains on clothing. It may sound weird, but smearing oven cleaner (the brown container with brush attached) on yellow stains prior to washing works wonders! (And no, it doesn’t ruin clothes!)

Much hatzlacha,

YOUR VOICE

THEIR TIME TO LEARN

I would appreciate it if someone would take the time to explain why girls in grades five through eight have so many days off. The only school day on schedule for my daughter between Yom Kippur and Sukkos is Wednesday — and only a half a day. Having off on Erev Sukkos makes sense, but I don’t understand why the off days before that are necessary. For Pesach, my daughter will be having off from Rosh Chodesh Nissan, giving her just eight days of school between Purim and Pesach.

I understand that high school girls should be home to help, since they will soon have their own homes and should be trained to run a home. However, the middle school girls truly belong in school learning about yom tov

Taking away the entire school day — especially the morning kodesh subjects — is too much. I would love for schools to implement the idea of half days of learning instead of the entire days off. This is the time for these girls to learn; it’s the foundation for when they get older. (I also find it hard to believe that girls are truly helping out at home from 9 a.m. until they go to sleep.)

It might be too late to change things for Sukkos, but not for Pesach, so I decided to broach the topic. Unless, of course, someone can write in with a compelling reason for these girls needing to help so much before yom tov

WEEK 2: ENTERING THE BEIS HAKNESSES

As we approach our beis haknesses, nearing the doors and the moment of entry into this makom tefillah, let’s hit “pause” and stop for a moment.

How does a person enter such a place? Let’s remember that we’re not dealing with a random room that conveniently works out as a predetermined meeting place. We’re talking about the home of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. How would you enter the CEO’s office? How would you walk into any important meeting?

The first halacha in this regard is one of self-inspection. Is your appearance up to par for an executive meeting? The Shulchan Aruch tells us that a person should ensure, “Shelo yehei alav v’lo al bigadav shum lichluch” — that there is nothing dirty either on himself or on his clothing. Make sure your hands are clean. Make sure your shirt doesn’t have a stain. Make sure your footwear isn’t covered in mud.

Now, there is an important point here. We are discussing the laws of beis haknesses — the physical room, not the laws of tefillah — actual prayer. It is within this body of halacha that we are given instruction regarding how to enter. In other words, the manner and mannerisms of proper respect hold true even if one has no intention of engaging in tefillah. Let’s say you keep your tefillin in shul and now need to retrieve them at 2 a.m. before catching a red-eye flight. You head on over to your shul. There’s no tefillah happening, and the place is completely deserted. Stop. You’re entering a special place. Make sure you look appropriate, and only then enter.

Truly, though, the pre-entry self-in-

spection goes much further.

Halacha tells us that as we enter our shuls, it’s not enough to focus on our physical state, ensuring we look properly presentable. Before stepping inside, we need to focus on the internal, entering with the proper frame of mind.

As described by the Mishnah Berurah:[1]

“Kodem boi’oy libeis haknesses… v’yargish v’yirsa atzmo b’hichnaso l’beis haknesses meirov pachdo v’yamtin v’yish’heh me’at v’yomer ‘v’ani b’rov chasdecha avo veisecha eshtachaveh el heichel kodshecha b’yirasecha’ v’achar kach yikanos.”

Loosely translated: Before entering, stop for a moment. Try to feel the intense reverence, the awe, of coming into such a place. Focus on this feeling, and say the words “Va’ani b’rov chasdecha avo veisecha, eshtachaveh el heichal kodshecha b’yirasecha” – By virtue of Your kindness, I am stepping into Your house. I am coming to Your dedicated place of kedusha to serve you with trepidation. Only then shall you enter.[2]

Let’s have a look at what we are saying. There are two components here. One is that of “eshtachaveh … b’yirasecha.” I am here to serve You with awe. Not with a casualness, but with the seriousness and gravity brought about by awareness of where I am and what I’m doing. This element will necessarily cause me to act differently when in the confines of this unique place, limiting my speech to that of proper value, restricting mundane activities such as eating and sleeping, and affecting the very way I carry myself.

But there is yet another component, and it comes before the element of yirah, awe. “Va’ani b’rov chasdecha avo veisecha.” I look to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and say, “I’m coming into Your home, and I’m truly aware that it is only in Your great kindness that You are letting me in.” Hashem very much wants us to be here, but at the end of the day, it’s a tremendous gift He’s granting us. Think of parents offering their children an invitation to come for Pesach. Yes, every parent wants their child home and cherishes the time spent together. Yet, it would take a completely unappreciative and rather clueless child to simply barge into his parents’ home without a thought, as if all is owed to him. At the very least, basic decency would require that a child act in a way his parents will appreciate, avoiding trampling on the way they run their household.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu loves us tremendously, and wants nothing more than for us to draw close to Him. Yet it would be foolish to simply take that for granted and not stop to realize what He is gifting us: a chance to walk into His home, day

IN SUMMATION:

after day. Certainly, it would at least obligate us to act appropriately while in His home.

Of these two components, our thought process tends to gravitate toward the yirah element. We generally focus on and seek to improve in this regard. Our commitments often involve refraining from speech during tefillah, avoiding dealing in business matters in shul and the like. Focusing on the gratitude, the “I’m so glad to be here. Thank You for the opportunity!” aspect? Not so much. And indeed, this is quite understandable. After all, it’s hard not to take something for granted when you’ve had it your entire life.

Now, after dealing with months of our shuls being shuttered, I do believe we’ve gained a level of appreciation in this regard. We had our minyanim — in yards, driveways, porches or other. We had our minyanim, but no beis haknesses. As much as we wanted to return, Hakadosh Baruch Hu was telling us no. It’s not something automatic. And now that He’s reopened the doors to let us in, we realize the favor we had been receiving all along.

Many people have been looking to accept upon themselves something tangible, a concrete improvement in their lifestyle, as a way to show Hakadosh Baruch Hu that we are taking the messages of the last few months seriously. We understand that He wants us to improve, and would like to take a positive step forward to answer the call. Perhaps this would be something small yet significant, easy enough to be practically doable yet meaningful enough to effect real change. Before walking into shul, stop. It takes only a few seconds. Stop and say the words, “Va’ani b’rov chasdecha avo veisecha, eshtachaveh el heichal kodshecha b’yirasecha.” Stop and think how fortunate you are that He is opening the doors and inviting you in. Think back to the emotion you felt the first time you walked through the doors of your reopened shul

Then, with a feeling of gratitude, step into His home, ready for a meaningful conversation with Him.

[2] As the poskim place this halacha in siman 46, with Birchas Hashachar, as opposed to in siman 151 when discussing the laws of beis haknesses, it seems evident that these words need only be said upon entry for Tefillas Shacharis, but not upon subsequent entries throughout the day.

1. Before entering a beis haknesses — be it at the time of tefillah or at another time — one should take care to make certain that both his person and clothing are free of dirt, stains or anything unbefitting.

2. As you arrive each morning for Shacharis, stop before you enter and reflect on the awesomeness of the place you are about to enter. Say the words, “ Va’ani b’rov chasdecha avo veisecha, eshtachaveh el heichal kodshecha b’yirasecha,” with gratitude, in appreciation that we are being invited to return.

With COVID-19 Rates Rising, Officials Focus on Yom Tov Safety

With Ramapo’s coronavirus infections continuing to rise alarmingly, state and local officials are working with community leaders to prevent a widespread resurgence of the virus, which could have potentially disastrous results.

The Journal News reported that infection rates in Rockland were at 3.5%, more than triple average statewide levels. As of last Friday, 56 new cases had been reported in just two days, and of the country’s 351 cases, 206 came from residents in the 10952 and 10977 zip codes. In a statement released by Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, he said that the town was working closely with community leaders, providing them with regular updates and reinstituting a COVID-19 hotline in English and Yiddish. Specht emphasized the importance of ensuring that health and safety guidelines are being followed, particularly in local shuls, and noted that letters are being circulated by local doctors emphasizing the need for social distancing and masks, which are being distributed at several local supermarkets.

A four-page document issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker addressed similar issues in light of the ongoing yomim tovim, reminding members of New York’s Jewish community that:

• Occupancy in shuls should be limited to either 33% of capacity or the amount of people who can fit in the room while allowing for safe social distancing, whichever number is smaller.

The recommended six-foot social distancing guidelines are extended to twelve feet in all instances where there will

be any singing or chanting, both in shuls and in congregational sukkahs

• Face masks should be worn in shul and in congregational sukkahs when people are standing, singing or chanting.

• Any food served at congregational events should be individually wrapped.

Staggered minyanim are recommended to reduce the number of people present at any one time, and the guidelines also called for people to avoid hand-shaking, limit yom tov meals to family members, wash their hands frequently, and to clean and disinfect frequently used and high-contact areas often.

With Simchas Torah posing even greater risks because of the large number of people gathering for extended periods of time, the state called on residents to avoid hand-holding, dancing in large groups and without social distancing, and distributing unwrapped treats to children.

Border Standoff Ends with Disappointed Uman-Hopefuls Heading Home Hours Before Rosh Hashana

After days of camping out on a roadway at the Ukrainian border, more than 2,000 people who had hoped to be in Uman for Rosh Hashanah instead found themselves spending the final day of 5780 making other arrangements for yom tov

While Ukraine closed its borders several weeks ago to travelers in an effort to curtail the spread of the coronavirus, Belarus was still allowing foreigners to enter, and thousands took advantage of what they hoped was a back door to Uman. But Ukrainian officials refused to let them in, sparking a days-long standoff that had the Ukrainian and Belarusian governments sniping at each other.

According to YNet News, the standoff began last Monday night at the Novi Yarylovychi border crossing between Belarus and northern Ukraine, blocking all traffic through the area. One traveler, who identified himself only as Benjamin, said that he spent the night sleeping on the bus, while others slept on the roadway and gathered twigs and sticks to build fires for warmth.

More than 100 police officers and members of the National Guard were on site by Tuesday afternoon, setting up tents and bringing food and water to the men and boys stuck in the neutral zone between the two countries as negotiations to allow them to continue traveling to Uman, approximately 266 miles to the south continued.

Ukraine accused Belarus of misleading travelers, according to Haaretz, giving them hope that they would be allowed to cross the border shared by the two countries. Belarusian officials fired back, charging Ukraine with inhumane treatment of the Uman-hopefuls, whom they offered to drive to Uman for Rosh Hashanah and back into Belarus.

As the days went by, those who were stranded at the border did whatever they could to convince guards to let them into Ukraine. While some tried explaining the importance of making the annual pilgrimage to Rebbi Nachman’s tzion, others put on traditional Ukranian attire and sang the national anthem in an effort to prove their sincerity and allegiance to the country. But by Friday afternoon, the border standoff had resolved mostly on its own, with nearly all of those who had been stranded there leaving on their own accord and returning to Belarus, reported The New York Times.

“It was very hard,” admitted Rabbi Avraham Klatzky. “We hoped until the very last second they would open the border.”

COVID-19 precautions were in effect in Uman for the approximately 3,000 people who had arrived before the borders closed several weeks ago. Of the 460 travelers, 10 tested positive for the coronavirus, and pictures taken at Rabbi Nachman’s tzion show masked visitors and floors marked with social distancing circles and directional arrows to keep people apart.

This year of all years, coming to Uman was a higher priority than ever, said Yechiel Stern of Israel, one of those who managed to get into the Ukraine.

“We pray not just for ourselves,” said Stern. “We connect the whole world. This year with the pandemic it’s particularly important, and this is why we didn’t give up.”

CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE

Recap: Gustav writes a long letter to Elisheva and her father, explaining all that he did and begging them to try to understand why he did it.

Elisheva had deliberated what to write on the nameplate — on the new door that had appeared just a few feet away from their front door — and in the end, her excitement over the name “Ludmir” had tipped the scale.

The children loved dropping in on their grandfather “for just a few minutes.” They enjoyed walking out the front door and going down the hall to knock at the door with the pretty carved wooden nameplate, even though they could have easily knocked at the inner door that connected them to Zeidy’s new apartment unit. Yisroel Benzion had finally bid farewell to the senior citizens’ home and had moved in with his family permanently.

* * * * *

Yisroel returned from Mincha together with his grandson Meir, and found his daughter standing at the door, scraping at the remnants of the glue from the nameplate. “Is everything all right?” he asked.

She turned. “Everything is fine, baruch Hashem. Just…”

“Are you expecting guests?” He looked at her, and when she blushed, he smiled and opened the door. Meir walked inside with him, and helped his grandfather hang his jacket on the hook. Elisheva turned around and walked back into her own home.

A few minutes later, she appeared in the room again, through the other door. “I

brought you a cup of tea and your pill that you take before eating.”

“Tell me, Elisheva. Is Gustav coming to Eretz Yisroel?” he asked directly.

She blushed again. “Yes. You know me well, Tatty.”

“When?”

“He called today to let me know that he’s landed.” She paused. “And he’s staying with a nephew in Bnei Brak, the only chareidi in his family. They don’t know anything about… his part in this, as you requested of him.”

“They don’t know? Good.”

“And I must tell you that Gustav himself was very happy with your request not to tell the extended Ludmir family that it was an intentional mistake. He wrote to us that you are such a wonderful, noble person, and I agree with every word.” Only a month had passed since they had received the fax from Australia, and they were all still gripped by the lack of clarity. Her father hardly spoke about the subject, but did make the effort to ask that if they would be updating the Ludmir family about the new information, they should present it as a regretful error that had been a result of those tumultuous times.

Now, Gustav had informed them that he was in Eretz Yisroel and that the Ludmirs were very excited by the news and could not wait to meet their new cousin.

But before that, he wanted to meet his young friend, Edo.

“I wonder if he’s embarrassed,” she mur-

mured. “For me, it’s so exciting… Are you excited, Tatty?”

He nodded. “You can imagine,” he said, after a moment.

“Suddenly you have a name and a family and a background, and so do I.” She sat down on the armchair. “We’ll finally be able to know who your parents are, from which families, and what happened to them… The Ludmirs probably know lots of details. But I don’t think it will be good for you to meet the whole family at once. It will be too much for you.” She glanced at her father, who was folding his blanket with slow, deliberate motions.

“First you should meet your Gustav,” she said. “You need to decide together, in detail, what we’re saying about this... mistake. Because without the real story, it comes out a bit muddled, and I hope the Ludmirs don’t think that we are swindlers trying to take over Joe’s fortune with made-up stories about the past.”

“B’ezras Hashem it will be fine, Elisheva,” her father said gently. “The Eibeshter has never left me, and He won’t do so now either. Especially when all I want is to do a chesed for another Yid.”

“Mommy!” Meir’s voice cut her off from inside the house. “Someone’s at the door! He needs either my mother or my father to sign something!”

“I’m coming!” She scurried off toward the front door. A stranger — likely a courier — was standing there. “Is this the Potolsky, Bentzion or Ludmir family?” he asked impatiently. “There are three names on this package, and two doors with names on them… Who’s all mixed up here, the sender or you?!”

A package?

Only then did Elisheva notice the tall, slim package leaning on the wall, wrapped in brown paper. She wasn’t sure how, but it was clear to her that she knew who the sender was — and more than that, she was almost one hundred percent sure that she knew what was in the package.

And she was right.

After the courier left, she and Meir carefully carried the package into the house and tore off the paper. Soon enough, everyone who was home was standing in front of their familiar old cuckoo clock.

Its hands moved slowly and steadily, as if they had never stopped. The little door was closed, but according to the clock, it should open any minute. “And if not, I can always help it with my ball,” Meir

“Is this the Potolsky, Bentzion or Ludmir family? There are three names on this package.”

offered generously.

“No way!” his mother scolded.

Yisroel gazed at the tall, elegant clock. “What’s in the envelope, Elisheva?” he asked.

“A letter, I guess,” she said, noticing the bright yellow envelope for the first time. “What could it be?” She peeled the envelope off the brown paper that lay crumpled on the couch and handed it to her father. As he opened it, the door to the clock popped open, and the cuckoo bird emerged.

“Cuckoo! Cuckoo!” it announced. “Cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo!” And for some reason, the sound brought tears to Elisheva’s eyes.

“Is it from him?” she asked, staring at the now-shut door.

“Probably,” he affirmed, glancing at the page.

“Probably?”

“There’s no signature on this letter. It’s just a photocopied picture of birds. Looks like it could be from an encyclopedia.”

“But there’s something written on the back!” Esti exclaimed, and drew closer to the paper.

Her grandfather flipped over the page: “I’ll come on Sunday, if you agree,” he read out loud, hoarsely.

Elisheva looked at him. “And

what does the first side say?” she asked quietly.

He handed her the page silently. A large picture of a bird, in black and white, gazed back at her from the top of the page.

Underneath the picture, the following was written: It is known that the cuckoo bird does not build itself a nest. Rather, it chases other birds away from their nests and then lays its egg there, so that the other birds can brood over it.

Sometimes, the cuckoo mother will even push away an egg from the nest to make room for its own egg. When the time comes, the cuckoo chick hatches in the nest where its mother placed it, and then throws down all the native chicks from their nest, so that it can get all the attention of its “adoptive parents.” Bird researchers who have studied this behavior…”

And here, the text was cut off. *

“I don’t know what the bird researchers found,” Edo-Yisroel-Yosef Ludmir said quietly, his eyes fixed on the large clock in his daughter’s dining room. “But it is clear to me what they did not discover — a cuckoo bird that came to ask forgiveness from the birds that it had chased away.”

“And it is clear to me that if that cuckoo bird would have done it,” Gustav’s voice trembled a bit, “they would not have forgiven it so easily.”

“It’s not easy.” Elisheva’s father did not look at him. “But it’s possible. It’s possible.”

The older man was silent, his fingers hugging the cup of hot water Elisheva had served him, as per his request. Aside from that, he did not touch any of the delectable refreshments that they had prepared for the historic visit. None of the children were home; they had all been invited for supper to Tzippy to clear the house out for Zeidy’s important guest.

“I feel…” Gustav’s wrinkled fingers were white as he pressed them to the glass. “I just have no words. I don’t understand how I even dare

to sit here, across from you, and to look at the family you have raised all these years without knowing anything.” He paused. “I’ll check how much I still owe you. Financially, I mean. I have tried to help your daughter, and I hope I was able to compensate you a bit as well, by making it possible for you to come live here so you can enjoy the nachas.”

Elisheva’s father had much less of a way with words, which is why he seemed to have trouble finding the right response. “Yes,” he said finally. “I’m really happy to see nachas Baruch Hashem.”

No one in the room made any comparisons out loud, although they each did so mentally.

Then they spoke a bit about Australia and the economy there, the weather, health insurance for the golden years, and the difficulty of air travel at this age. Eliyahu moderated the conversation, asking the questions and getting answers out of his father-in-law. It took some time, but eventually, they chatted smoothly, and the atmosphere was undoubtedly convivial.

“I wanted to tell him something,” Elisheva’s father said quietly. “But I didn’t, because it would have offended him.” He took a deep breath. “When I try to think what would have happened if he would have told me the truth, and I would have gone to Magdiel instead of him, and lived at the uncles instead of him, and grown up there instead of him…” He stopped again. “No. No, I would not have wanted that,” he concluded with finality.

His daughter gaped at him. “Of course,” she said, after a moment. “Growing up there, in the Sharon, without Rav Kahaneman, without Batei Avot, without the yeshivah in Bnei Brak and the yeshivah in Yerushalayim… So, Tatty… Are you saying that you’re actually happy about the switcharound?”

Elisheva looked at her father’s pure, expressionless face, and thought that there was no one in the world who could suspect him of being a swindler.

They stood up to part, but for some reason, had trouble doing so.

“Keep in touch,” Edo said.

“We’ll be happy to,” Eliyahu added warmly.

“Yes, yes, I hope so,” Gustav murmured. “And meet your relatives, Edo. They are waiting anxiously.”

None of them spoke about the story that they would or would not tell the Ludmirs. Suddenly, it didn’t really matter to anyone. Elisheva looked at her father’s pure, expressionless face, and thought that there was no one in the world who could suspect him of being a swindler. And if there was — then let that person get tangled up in his own thoughts. It was not her job to come up with explanations and excuses.

Finally, Gustav left.

“It doesn’t sound right like that.” He looked pensively out the window. “But I’m happy that I came, in my way, to different places than he did. How did Yosef Hatzaddik put it? Elokim chashavah l’tovah — Hashem thought it for the good… I got to different places.”

“Totally different,” Elisheva said. Gustav’s face flashed in her mind. Yes, he was the man who had taken so much from her father. But without knowing it, he had also given him so much more.

“But I’m happy now to know who we are,” she added, in a whisper.

“So am I.” He smiled and reached out, as if to pinch her cheek. “And it’s not a contradiction. Maybe when you get older you’ll understand.”

Was it only her imagination that the cuckoo bird that popped out but mere seconds later was chuckling with laughter along with Elisheva?

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Passes Away

THE PULSE: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away in Washington, D.C., at the age of 87. Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court and was considered a strong advocate for women’s issues. She was a leader of the liberal wing of the court. Her death and the ensuing supreme vacancy is creating a tempest in this hyperpartisan election season.

JEWISH ISSUES: Ginsburg was born in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. She attended James Madison High School, which is also the alma mater of Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Bernie Sanders, and former Republican Senator and current Republican Jewish Coali-

tion Chairman Norm Coleman. While sitting on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, Ginsburg issued two decisions of direct importance to the Jewish community. In Goldman v. Weinberger, Ginsburg authored the dissenting opinion. She argued in favor of Jewish Air Force Officer Simcha Goldman’s right to wear a yarmulke while on duty. Ginsburg argued that the Air Force commander’s attempt to ban Goldman from wearing his yarmulke was a “callous indifference to Goldman’s religious faith,” which “runs counter to the best of our traditions.” In United States v. Pollard, Ginsburg and conservative Reagan appointee Laurence Silberman affirmed the life sentence accorded to Pollard and upheld a lower court’s decision to deny Jonathan Pollard the right to withdraw his guilty plea. Ginsburg was not religious, but she had a mezuzah affixed to her chambers at the Supreme Court. In 2003 the Supreme Court delayed its opening arguments out of deference to Ginsburg and

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 23, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Justice Stephen Breyer so that both could attend Yom Kippur services.

JUDICIAL POSITIONS: Ginsburg’s most notable opinion was in the 1996 case of United States v. Virginia. She authored the majority opinion in the 7-1 decision, striking down state funding for a male-only college on the basis that its admission process violated the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. Ginsburg believed in a living constitution. She wrote that “U.S. jurists honor the Framers’ intent ‘to create a more perfect Union,’ if they read the Constitution as belonging to a global 21st century, not as fixed forever by 18th century understandings.” She took liberal positions on social issues and women’s rights, and liberal activists lauded many of her decisions. However, Justice Ginsburg was also a close personal friend of the conservative icon, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The two families would hold annual get-togethers. Justice Scalia once said that Ginsburg “will take a lawyer who is making a ridiculous argument and just shake him like a dog with a bone.” In a touching tribute to Justice Ginsburg, Eugene Scalia, the son of the late Antonin Scalia, wrote, “What we can learn from the justices, though — beyond how to be a friend — is how to welcome debate and differences. The two justices had central roles in addressing some of the most divisive issues of the day, including who would be president. Not for a moment did one think the other should be condemned or ostracized. More than that, they believed that what they were doing — arriving at their own opinions thoughtfully and advancing them vigorously — was essential to the national good. With less debate, their friendship would have been diminished, and so, they believed, would our democracy.”

POLITICAL STORM: President Trump announced that he intends to nominate a candidate to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy created by Ginsburg’s death. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel said that he would bring the

nominee to the Senate floor for a confirmation vote. Democrats responded with outrage.

In 2016, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away. President Obama appointed Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy. Garland was considered a highly qualified candidate and would have won Senate confirmation if his nomination would have been brought to a floor vote. However, McConnell refused to allow the vote to go ahead, ostensibly due to the fact that it was an election year and that voters should have a say as to who gets appointed to the court. McConnell said, “Given that we are in the midst of the presidential election process, we believe that the American people should seize the opportunity to weigh in on whom they trust to nominate the next person for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.” McConnell attempted to explain his change of logic on the grounds that Republicans now control the presidency and the upper chamber. However, two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), announced their opposition to filling this vacancy before the upcoming election. Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate. McConnell’s plans will be stymied if four members defect and refuse to vote on a potential nominee. Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Mitt Romney (R-UT) are considered potential defectors. Democrats threatened that should Republicans push through a nominee before the election it will be no holds barred after the election should they prove to be victorious. Some options being floated are placing an eighteen-year limit on Supreme Court terms, adding two new justices to the Supreme Court, granting statehood to D.C. and Puerto Rico, and possibly doing away with the Senate filibuster. Many Democrats argue that the Electoral College, the equal representation of the Senate, and the Supreme Court’s composition give power to the minority at the majority’s expense. Republicans won two recent presidential elections with a minority of the popular vote. The Senate’s control is in the hands of a minority of the country as each state has an equal amount of representation, and nominees to the Su-

preme Court are appointed and confirmed by the decisions of those two bodies. Adding D.C. and Puerto Rico as states would add four new seats to the Senate from areas that tend to vote Democratic. This would result in increased Democratic representation in the Senate. Joe Biden appealed directly to Republican senators to wait on the vote until after the election. He implored them to “Let the people speak,” and to “Cool the flames that have engulfed our country.”

THE IMPACT: The political impact is enormous. Republicans will attempt to rally their base with the nomination of a new conservative justice. The fight for the Supreme Court helped energize the Republican base in 2016. Democrats will respond in kind. Democrats will also seek to portray this as a fight over Obamacare. Currently, the administration is seeking to have the Supreme Court overturn the Affordable Care Act. Conservative justices are more likely to side with the administration’s arguments. Democrats believe that they have the upper hand on health care issues and will use this Supreme Court battle as a lightning rod for making health care front and center in the election debate. Republicans are also cognizant that Democrats achieved impressive midterm turnout and gains in the aftermath of the last Supreme Court battle over the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. In a sign of the brewing political storm, the DNC raised $100 million in small donations in the 28 hours after Ginsburg’s death.

Problem Solvers Caucus Unveils “Search for Common Ground” Proposal

THE PULSE: Democratic and Republican leadership are locked in a stalemate over additional funding for assistance to Americans due to the coronavirus pandemic. Republican senators voted in favor of a $500 billion “skinny” stimulus bill, which did not include direct assistance for individuals and families. Democrats in the House refuse to budge on their demands for a much larger bill of $2.2 trillion in aid. President Trump attempted to pressure Republicans to go higher than $500 billion and to include direct payments to individuals and families. To bridge the divide, the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus unveiled its “Search for Common Ground” proposal, which is in the range of $1.5 trillion. Funding would increase or decrease based on future needs and COVID-19 infection rates.

THE IMPACT: Democratic leaders in the House shot down the proposal, but White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows expressed openness to the idea. Some are hopeful that even if the proposal is ultimately rejected, it will create ample pressure on party leadership to get to a compromise bill. The Problem Solvers Caucus is chaired by Tom Reed (R-NY) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ). It consists of 50 members, half of which are Republican and half are Democrat. The caucus is committed to working together in a bipartisan fashion to benefit the country.

CinnamonMaple Napoleons

A chilly night in the sukkah calls for napoleons with a hot cup of tea. It’s practically tradition! This take on the classic dessert brings fall flavors and a fresh, new deliciousness. Puff pastry is best baked the day it will be served, and stored at room temperature.

INGREDIENTS

3-inch puff pastry squares

Oil spray Prima Cinnamon sugar (or cinnamon and sugar)

1 (16 oz.) carton whip topping, cold ½ carton vanilla pudding

GLAZE

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

¼ cup maple syrup

½ tsp. vanilla sugar

¼ tsp. cinnamon

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 375°.

2. Thaw the puff pastry squares.

3. Spray a pan with oil, and arrange the puff-pastry squares on it; then sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar.

4. Bake for 20 minutes.

5. Whip the topping with the vanilla pudding until stiff peaks form.

6. Mix together all the glaze ingredients until a smooth mixture forms.

7. Create stacks with two or three layers of puff pastry and cream, starting and ending with puff pastry. Top with glaze. Alternatively, you can assemble these as you would regular napoleons, making a “sandwich” of puff pastry squares, filling it with cream, and topping it with glaze.

Chocolate Tart With Candied Pears

Make a statement that’s elegant, memorable and decadent. This tart uses a no-fuss dough that you just throw together and press into tart pans. It is quite delicate, so handle only once it’s fully cooled. Yield: 8 mini tarts

CRUST

1 stick margarine, softened

1 cup plus 1 T. flour

⅓ cup brown sugar

2 T. cocoa

¼ tsp. salt

CHOCOLATE FILLING

¾ cup whip topping (unwhipped)

5 oz. good-quality dark chocolate, chopped

1 T. sugar

⅛ tsp. salt

½ T. bourbon

1 egg, at room temperature

WHIPPED TOPPING

1 (16 oz.) carton whip topping

½ carton vanilla pudding

CANDIED PEARS

2 pears

2 cups water

2 cups sugar

Food coloring of choice

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350°.

2. Mix together all the crust ingredients to form a smooth dough.

3. Press into mini tart pans and bake for twenty minutes. Then allow to cool.

CHOCOLATE FILLING

1. Heat the whip in a pot until it simmers slightly at the edges. Remove from heat.

2. Add the chocolate and mix until smooth.

3. Add sugar and salt, and stir to combine.

4. Add the bourbon and egg. Mix.

5. Pour the filling into cooled tart shells. Bake for 20 minutes.

WHIP

1. Whip together the whip topping and vanilla pudding until the mixture is stiff.

2. When the tarts have cooled, top them with whip.

CANDIED PEARS

1. Cut the pears into ¼-inch slices.

2. Bring the water and sugar to a boil.

3. Add a few drops of food coloring. (You can add additional drops of food coloring to subsequent batches to create an ombre effect.)

4. Add the pear slices and simmer for five minutes.

5. Remove the pears from the pot and arrange them so they don’t touch one another on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

6. Bake at 275° for one hour, then raise the temperature to 350° for ten minutes. If the pears still seem too moist, leave them in the oven for a couple more minutes, being very careful that they don’t burn.

7. When making in advance, store the candied pears in an airtight container. They will keep for at least a month. When serving the tarts, stand a toothpick behind each pear for support.

More than 3,300 years ago, at the Chanukas HaMishkan, Aharon Hakohen lifted his hands and uttered the eternal words, “Yevarechecha Hashem v’yishmerecha… v’yasem lecha shalom .”

When the Beis Hamikdash stood in its full glory, part of the avodah of the Kohanim was saying these timeless words before throngs of Yidden waiting to be blessed. After the morning korbanos, the Kohanim would ascend a duchan — a platform; hence the Yiddish term for Birchas Kohanim: duchening.

And, to this very day, the Kohanim continue to shower Klal Yisroel with blessings, using this power inherited from Aharon Hakohen.

WHEN?

The brachos of the Kohanim must be transmitted joyously. In chutz la’aretz, we receive the brachos at peak times of simchah — on yom tov. This includes Yom Kippur, when we are granted this privilege. On this holiest of days, our hearts should overflow with joy at the opportunity for a complete kapparah. Sefardim throughout the world, along with Ashkenazim throughout Eretz Yisroel, are fortunate to receive these blessings daily. Every morning during Shacharis and every time Tefillas Mussaf is recited, the Kohanim approach the front of the shul, turn to face the mispallelim and utter the holy words.

In other places in Eretz Yisroel, such as much of Tzfas, Birchas Kohanim is generally recited each Shabbos, but not daily.

Tzaddikim tell us that as the heart of the world, Eretz Yisroel serves as the conduit for all bracha. The blessings shared by the Kohanim every day flow throughout the entire world,

www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484 September 23, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 149

showering bracha on Yidden, wherever they may be.

In truth, as one of the 613 mitzvos, one would think that Birchas Kohanim should be done every day, everywhere. Alas, it seems that aside from the technical reasons that affect Ashkenazim in chutz la’aretz duchening only on yom tov, there seem to be mysterious obstacles, too.

The blessings shared by the Kohanim every day flow throughout the entire world, showering bracha on Yidden, wherever they may be.

The Vilna Gaon had a great desire for the Kohanim to confer their brachos daily in his hometown. One day it was announced that the following morning, the Kohanim would duchen. That very afternoon, though, the Gaon was arrested by government authorities. It seems that in Shamayim, he was prevented from enacting his holy desire.

Later, his talmid Rav Chaim of Volozhin also wished to institute Birchas Kohanim as a daily treasure and issued instructions for the bracha to be recited the next day. A fire broke out in the middle of that night, burning down the shul — and so that was also prevented.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT BIRCHAS KOHANIM?

The letters of Aharon Hakohen’s name (ןרהא) can be reshuffled to create the word “nirah” (הארנ), meaning “to be seen.” This embodies the power of Birchas Kohanim: The positive results are visible for all to see.

The Shechinah is present in shul when the brachos are given. That is why it is customary for everyone in shul

to stand during these uplifting moments, and for the crowd to cover their faces rather than observe the Kohanim.

As the Kohanim advance toward the aron kodesh, the entire assembly prepares for a Divine “hug.” What a tremendous opportunity it is to stand face-to-face with the Kohanim as they relay wishes for protection, chein and shalom from Hashem!

AHAVAH

The Kohanim begin with a bracha, affirming that they were conferred with the kedusha of Aharon and were commanded to bentch Klal Yisroel b’ahavah. It is the love of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and the love of the Kohanim that are noted during these holy moments. Much like the keruvim facing each other atop the Aron in the Kodesh Hakodashim, the Kohanim stand face to face with the rest of Klal Yisroel in a complete demonstration of ahavah.

In fact, this ahavah is a prerequisite for the bracha that follows. If a tzibbur is not satisfied with the Kohen — or if the Kohen is not at peace with the tzibbur — the Kohen is not allowed to duchen, but should leave shul. Saying the

Chassidim approached the Baal Hatanya and complained about their insufficient parnassah. The Rebbe told them that the keys to bounty lie within ahavah and achvah. He counseled them to refrain from jealousy or badmouthing other Yidden. “The proof,” the Rebbe said, “is from the Kohanim. They were commanded to bentch Bnei Yisroel b’ahavah. In 1979, excavations at the site of the ancient caves in Ketef Hinnom, on the outskirts of Yerushalayim, turned up an amazing discovery. Among some thousand artifacts uncovered were two tiny silver scrolls, each no bigger than an inch long. They were so fragile that it took three years to figure out a way to safely unroll them without causing them to disintegrate.

Rav Avigdor Miller commented that if a person shows his cheerful countenance to others, Hashem will surely show a “cheery face” to us as well: “ya’er Hashem Panav eilecha.”

THE FORMATION

Birchas Kohanim is divided in three parts, as if a triplerung climb. It begins with brachos for material abundance and protection, continues with chein and the ability to give meaning to His creation, and concludes with a complete close connection between Hakadosh Baruch Hu and us.

The first verse has three words, correlating to the three Avos. The second contains five, drawing a parallel to the five Chumashim. The third has seven words, indicating a relationship with the seven heavens from where Hashem showers His brachos upon us.

The last word of each verse carries a potency of its own.

In the first verse, we are blessed with sustenance and health. Once attained, it can

easily be taken for granted or abused. Thus, we end with “veyishmerecha — may Hashem protect us” and help us treat these gifts with care.

One understanding of the second bracha is that our minds be illuminated by the Torah. It ends with the word “viyechune-

The Gemara (Sotah 38b) implies that even a Yid who cannot be present in shul is gebentched with the words of Birchas Kohanim. In fact, all of Klal Yisroel benefit from the holy words. This certainly includes those hospitalized and women at home with their children.

cha — Hashem should help us find favor” in His eyes and the eyes of others. Without this aspect, our Torah learning is limited. Possessing wisdom but being unable to share it with others makes our learning incomplete.

The third bracha wishes compassion and mechillah, and ends with the word “shalom.” Without peace, all else has little value.

SHALOM

The Kohanim conclude with the words, “v’yasem lecha shalom.” It is puzzling that the bracha of peace specifically, which usually refers to interpersonal relationships, is wished upon the individual – “lecha.” It would seem more logical to wish peace onto Klal Yisroel as a whole.

Yet this wording imparts a profound message. It symbolizes the constant tug-of-war between the guf and the neshamah. In nearly all areas of life, these two parts of the human existence desire polar opposites.

Through this bracha of shalom, or shleimus, we acquire an inner sense of harmony and completeness. The personal peace we gain through these words is the essential way for the body to find and enjoy ruchnius delight.

A Holocaust survivor who served as a baal tefillah in a large kehillah during the Yamim Nora’im would have tears in his eyes each year when he emotionally shared his memories of the postwar days. “Some sixty years ago,” he would say, “it was time for duchening, but there was no Kohen around! We went outside onto the streets to search… Maybe we’d be able to find a Kohen and beg him to come inside to duchen for us!

“Today,” he’d continue, “I stand at the amud and call out, ‘Kohanim!’ and so many Kohanim, young and old, run up. There can be more Kohanim than comfortably fit before the aron kodesh.”

Yes, how times have changed! Still, we yearn to merit receiving the brachos from myriads of Kohanim in the Beis Hamikdash, every single day.

WEEK 4:

Causes of mold found on outside house siding include Water related problems. Mold will thrive if the ground next to the house is constantly wet. You must correct problems such as poor rainwater runoff, poor drainage, dripping gutters and leaky outdoor faucets and hoses. Another cause of outside mold on your house siding is Excessive Shade. While shade keeps your house cooler, it blocks the sun from drying off your siding. That makes it susceptible to mold, particularly in damp climates. A third cause of mold found on outside house siding are Soffits, which are not exposed to direct sunlight, thus attracting mold. Yet another cause of mold outside is Inadequate Air Circulation. Besides the sun, air circulation can dry off siding. If you have densely planted bushes next to your home, rain-slicked siding will not dry out. Mold likes dark and damp places.

There’s just something about the kapparos experience that sears itself into the memory. Perhaps it's the fact that the nose knows when kapparos is on the way before the crates full of birds even come into view. Or maybe it’s the interaction between humans and animals that makes these moments memorable: the big-eyed toddlers who stare, enchanted and also a bit afraid of the clucking creatures in front of them; the girls who come equipped with rain bonnets, cringing as the birds circle above them; the furrow-browed adults trying to maintain the proper kavanah while making sure they are saying the appropriate paragraph as birds are hoisted above their heads… Whatever it is, kapparos is one of those experiences that’s utterly memorable for most people.

Chickens are not anatomically designed to be picked up by their wings. Holding them in such a manner puts a disproportionate amount of stress on the wings, with their body weight hanging unnaturally below them.

For the rare few who have chickens pecking about in their yards,

CARING FOR THE KAPPAROS

Are you one of the head honchos running a kapparos site? Ask yourself: Is there any way I can make the chickens more comfortable while under my care? Of course, not everything will be under your control, but are there steps you can take to make things better for the birds?

Take the time to train your staff/volunteers how to properly hold the chickens, and enforce the training as a rule! Then ask yourself:

• How long has it been since the birds were last fed and watered? Can I find some way to provide them with these necessities of life?

• Is it very hot outside? Can large fans be positioned all around the birds to provide them relief from the heat?

Are the crates stacked one on top of another? Can they be single-stacked, preventing one bird’s waste from falling onto another?

THE CORRECT WAY TO HOLD A CHICKEN

These guys got it right!

the novelty of being near these animals is assuredly less than for those of us who see the live versions but once a year.

In times gone by, the situation was reversed: Back in the shtetl, chickens were a common sight, whether they were roaming on one’s own property as egg layers, or purchased live and taken to the shochet lichvod Shabbos kodesh. Nowadays, we see only the end result, the sanitized version of parts in plastic wrapping, often forgetting that a living being was once behind our supper. When it comes to kapparos, that distance and lack of familiarity may be somewhat detrimental to the animals in our care, simply because we don’t understand them through day-to-day interactions. The truth is that nobody wants to harm a living creature due to ignorance, but that sometimes does happen — especially when children are helping out at a kapparos site.

Most people don’t speak Chickenese, making it hard for the average person to know when our fowly friends are content, scared, tired, playful or in pain. To the once-a-year chicken-holder, in fact, these birds can even seem rather uninspiringly dull and perhaps even devoid of feeling. But they’re not; they have emotions and react to stimuli just as other living beings do.

In fact, the Gemara in Bava Metzia (85a) teaches us to be

especially sensitive to animals headed for shechitah. There it is related that there was once a calf who resisted being led to slaughter. Escaping, it ran to Rabi Yehudah Hanasi who was sitting nearby. The frightened calf hid its head in his garments, crying in the language of cows.

“Go, for you were created for this purpose,” Rabi Yehudah Hanasi told the young cow.

The Gemara then relates that because he hadn’t been compassionate enough toward that scared calf that sought refuge with him, inflictions were decreed upon him. For many years Rabi Yehudah Hanasi suffered terribly from illness, but eventually, when he later demonstrated a heightened level of compassion for animals, the afflictions were lifted.

Yidden are rachmanim bnei rachmanim, and we clearly don’t want to cause undue suffering to the “kapparos” under our care. Of course, there are many animal-rights activists who would consider shechting an animal as “causing undue suffering.” However, as Yidden, we understand that slaughter is permitted when the Divinely ordained laws of shechitah are followed. Furthermore, one of the world’s foremost experts on preventing suffering during the slaughtering process has proclaimed that when done by an expert, shechitah appears to cause no suffering to an animal. Dr. Temple Grandin wrote

164 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 23, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

that when she observed cattle who were appropriate manner — by a highly qualified using the uniquely Jewish knife, the amazed to see that they appeared to not even be aware of the cut.

Activists also point out the flaws in the prewelfare of the chickens, which is understandable; there truly are numerous areas in which the broiler industry that hatches, raises and ships these birds can improve. Activists even suggest doing away with using birds com pletely. But a minhag is never to be taken lightly — after all, “minhag Yisroel Torah.” And though some use money or fish for kapparos, many others have the time-honored minhag to use a live chicken for the ritual.

Surely there are improvements that those running the kapparos sites might consider making, but we as individuals can also enhance the cusing on how to make it less stressful for the chickens involved. One of the ways is to focus on the manner in which the bird is held.

Chickens are not anatomically designed to be picked up by their wings, although that sometimes takes place. Holding them in such a manner puts a disproportionate amount of stress on the wings, with their body weight hanging unnaturally below them.

Holding them upside-down by the feet isn’t much better. In both actions, there is risk of painful bone dis location and damage to the chicken’s muscles — and it probably feels just plain awful! The upside-down meth od also causes respiratory distress and can result in death within a few short moments.

So how do you hold a chicken correctly?

STEP 1:

Place one hand on the bird’s back and the other in the front of its chest to prevent it from moving away from you.

STEP 2:

Gently move your hands to the two sides to secure the wings against the chicken’s body. If possible, try to keep your fingers in a position that also supports the chicken’s chest.

IMPORTANT:

Do not squeeze! Hold the chicken securely but not too tightly; you don’t want to harm it while trying to prevent pain… That would defeat the purpose.

Here’s another brilliant and under-utilized way to hold a chicken: Put the bird in a box and gently circle it over the head. When I saw a squeamish girls, I was astounded at the simple genius of the idea. It reduces uncomfortable feelings for everyone!

So, now that you know, which method will you choose for your chicken?

The tichel on my head was white, so white. I hovered over the brandnew candlesticks my husband had prepared for me, and the solemnity of the moment struck me with an intensity that was as startlingly new as this candle-lighting was. For the very first time, it was up to me to usher in the holiest day of the year.

The clock was ticking, and I thought fast. Was it Shabbos or yom tov? Well, it was yom tov. Of course it was yom tov. So bracha — or brachos — first.

I murmured the brachos, struck the match, and leaned forward to light the candles. The first wick gave a tiny gasp as the candle turned to flame. Then the other one. But as I waved the match to snuff it of its light, something felt wrong. Very wrong. Because if it was indeed yom tov, why was I waving that match? Why wasn’t I using a candle?

I laid the charred match on the silver tray, and a feeling of unease crept up my hands. Wasn’t that match muktzah?

And even more discomfiting was the suspicion that Yom Kippur was not like every other yom tov. There was no cooking on Yom Kippur, for one. Then, presumably, the halacha was like Shabbos? So the match would have been okay, if only I’d recited the bracha after!

A wave of terror hit my gut. It was Yom Kippur! And I had so very nonchalantly desecrated the most heilige day of the year. I’d struck a match — on Yom Kippur. And then lit two candles. And if all this wasn’t enough, I then extinguished the match.

Deep, dark dread spread throughout my being and gripped my heart. Gripped my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Looking at those candles, I felt hot. Cold. Horribly, horribly, awfully wrong.

Why hadn’t I thought this through properly before lighting? And why, oh why, hadn’t I checked with my mother to make sure I knew what I was doing?!

And like air consumed by fire, the entirety of my night was robbed of any sort of regular Yom Kippur thoughts or kavanos. My davening was all about regret so tremendous that I was being swallowed whole, with no room left to breathe, to be, to think.

Shame is something else. I tried so hard to be a good person, a good wife. And to tell this story was so humiliating, so painfully humbling.

He tried to assure me that it was an honest mistake, and that the halachos and brachos of tzinding licht are very often confusing, and that Hakadosh Baruch Hu surely knew how badly I wanted to undo that quiet whisper of something that was supposed to be a mitzvah, and hopefully still was — at least somewhat, somewhere...

But I wasn’t one to be easily consoled — until my husband promised that he’ll speak to our Rebbe about what happened. Surely a Rebbe, with such a deep connection to On High, would know what to tell me, how to direct me.

I don’t remember the rest of that Yom Kippur. I must have gone to shul, I suppose. Must have davened. Fasted. But I do remember what came after Yom Kippur.

A day or so after yom tov, my husband came home with the news that he’d just been to see the Rebbe. The Rebbe, my husband said, listened to his tale and then advised that I say the entire Sefer Tehillim that day as a teshuvah for my error — but then he paused and said that, no, I could complete Tehillim over the course of five days.

A wave of terror hit my gut. It was Yom Kippur! And I had so very nonchalantly desecrated the most heilige day of the year.

My husband came home that Yom Kippur night to find his wife sobbing in bed, overwrought and plainly incapable of stringing more than a few words together at a time. He’d never seen me like that, and the image of him standing in that lamp-lit room, still wrapped in his white kittel and tallis with concern scrawled all over his being, is a memory I won’t forget so fast.

Soon he managed to coax the entire story out of me. They say pain shared is a pain halved, but shame…

When I heard that, my anguish and doubts disappeared. Because the Rebbe, with unparalleled wisdom, had somehow known what I was and what I wasn’t capable of doing. I was agreeable to — nay, pleased to — stretch out of my comfort zone to do what I needed, but completing Sefer Tehillim in one day, for me, would have been tantamount to telling me to fly halfway across the world in two hours; completing Tehillim over five days would be difficult enough.

And so it was that I spent that day, and the following day, and the following one, with my nose buried in a Sefer Tehillim. And the first night of Sukkos found us at my in-law’s home, and again, I was sitting with my Tehillim, completing my allotted kapitlach for the day.

Finally came the poignant moment when I reached the very last kapital in the sefer. And when I kissed that Tehillim closed, I felt gloriously and completely cleansed. Finally I felt what the rest of the world knew on Motzei Yom Kippur: It was time for a new beginning, a new page, and I was ready and waiting.

The world is full of chickens. Seriously. Chickens are right behind rats in being the most populous land-living animals with vertebrae. They number right around the 20 billion mark! Unlike rats, most of them are domesticated and not roaming the city streets…

“Bird-brained” might not be such an insult after all. Seems chickens can do simple math, are aware that just because an object is hidden from sight doesn’t mean it’s gone, have around 30 different vocalizations they use for communication, and have the ability to recognize and remember over 100 different individual people and animals — even when they haven’t seen them for a long time. They may not be brilliant by human standards, but the cogs are turning in their little heads.

There’s a huge trend now to purchase chickens as backyard pets, and while a chicken might make a fine friend, they come with the risk of transmitting salmonella. It’s important to always wash your hands after handling them. And, just like with COVID-19, don’t touch your face before washing!

Mother hens are really busy. Even before their little ones hatch, they keep themselves occupied turning their eggs in the nest — for a total of about 50 times per day!

Unlike your hard fingernails, chicken’s hard beaks are extremely sensitive to touch. They’re full of nerve endings, which help them find food and drink.

Chickens like to be clean — they just have very different hygiene rituals than we do. To cut down on the oils on their feathers, chickens bathe in dust instead of water!

Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant-based foods and meat, such as insects. Certain foods, however, are dangerous for them. Citrus fruit, salt, dried beans and onions are some of the foods that can be poisonous for our feathered friends.

How do you know if your chicken’s running a fever?

Not by comparing its temperature to yours! Chicken’s bodies normally run at around 104°.

Some chickens snore.

A spaghetti meal in the chicken world is grass. They slurp it down like “lange lokshen.”

Chickens have great vision — better than humans! We humans have three cones in our eyes that enable us to see colors, but chickens were created with five, which allows them to see violet and ultraviolet lights, as well. This enables them to see the sun’s rising rays well before a human can.

Ever heard of a “pecking order”? Chickens have an entire system of hierarchy that determines which bird gets the most respect. The leader eats first, followed by the chicken version of the vice president, and so on.

There’s a good reason birds must have a mesorah to be kosher. While those of us not in the know might consider “chicken” to be kosher, “chicken” is actually a very broad term for a species that encompasses many breeds — more than 500! And only a few of those qualify for kosher consumption. In recent years there was a huge tumult in the world of kashrus over the Braekel chicken. At the end of the day, although some rabbanim would still permit the breed, Rav Landau, zt”l, Rav Sternbuch, shlit”a. Rav Aharon Teitelbaum, shlit”a, and other leading poskim consider it completely non-kosher.

The Ayam Cemani breed of chicken is black inside and out. Almost everything — from its bones to its organs to its feathers and beaks — is black!

For a vegan version of chicken, try the Laetiporus mushroom, which is touted to taste nearly the same as fried chicken.

The only legal way to eat fried chicken in Gainesville, Florida, is with your hands.

In Europe, eggs are usually sold unwashed and unrefrigerated, whereas in America, we do exactly the opposite. Both methods are employed in order to combat bacteria. An unwashed European egg has a natural, thin protective layer that prevents bacteria from entering it, while a sanitized American egg relies on the washing and cold to protect it.
