The weekend celebrations were an enormous success, also coinciding with the annual BHP Billiton Service Awards which this year included 31 ‘25 Year Service’ awardees. The colossal street celebration included a huge number of food and community stalls, kid’s activities and historic exhibition plus world-class entertainment by Australian rock royalty Jon Stevens and South Australian party band Chunky Custard.

Sunday Mail columnist and ABC Radio presenter Peter Goers hosted the event recognising the amazing contribution Roxby Downs makes to the state. “Roxby is unique in that it is so young, yet it has achieved so much in its quarter century,” Mr Goers said. “And it has so far to go – and benefits the entire nation,” he said. Town Administrator Bill Boehm told the hundreds of spectators it was a thrill to be part of the town’s quarter century celebrations. “And I think everyone here should be very proud of themselves,” he said. “Everyone here has made a fantastic contribution to what is a terrific town.” He said Roxby was fast becoming a mining town of choice in Australia.

CHUNKY CUSTARD “Certainly this is a world class community,” he said. “And you are all a part of it. “It’s not often that you can look back and recognise what we have been able to achieve, and look forward to what we will be able to achieve in the future,” Mr Boehm said. “That vision and energy is what sets this place apart …we look forward to another 25 years ... plus going forward.” BHP Billiton Asset President Darryl Cuzzubbo said anniversaries always provide the best opportunities to look back and recognise the characters, the trials and the tribulations and the collective contributions that have shaped our community. “It’s also our opportunity to celebrate the unique spirit of this town,” he said.

“Roxby is unique in so many ways. “As a community, time and time again you all pull together with incredible generosity. “Above all it’s a community that knows how to have fun.” He acknowledged the relationship between the mine and the Roxby Downs community and said their two destinies were intertwined “At OD we are determined to create the mine and the processing plant of the 21st century … we know that our future is in our hands. “It’s a privilege to be part of the community and to call Roxby home.”
