$100,000 for RFDS By Vanessa Switala
T
he Royal Flying Doctors Service held its annual Roxby Downs Auxiliary Giant Auction and Golf Day on Saturday, September 17.
BIG DONATION: Kelli-Jo Kovac handing over the funds raised in the past 12 months to Debbie Adams.
Many local businesses and contractors contributed with auction items or a monetary donation for the successful event. Event Organiser, Kelli-Jo Kovac said, “It is important for the local community to get behind this event to support the RFDS which is a vital service to our community and to all Australians.” The day began with a nine hole Ambrose Golf Competition followed by the auction which commenced at 1pm. Item donations included toys, wooden walking sticks, accommodation packages, beer, sporting memorabilia, baby items and much more. Cherie Gaskin, RFDS Roxby Downs Auxiliary Publicity Officer, said that every donation, no matter how big or small were all outstanding. “In this day and age, for anyone to make a donation to us, is all very much appreciated. Without all of these donations, we would not be able to run this day, and we have been running it annually for over
20 years,” she said. On the night, event organisers handed over a cheque for $100,000 to RFDS Adelaide for all proceeds that have been raised in the last twelve months, including last years annual auction and golf day. Mrs Gaskin said it is important for the Roxby Downs community to support the event to “Keep the Flying Doctor Flying”. “As the RFDS lands in Olympic Dam roughly every three days, we, as a community, rely heavily on them, and in return, we need to support them. The support from the local community has been outstanding. None of us ever want to have to use the RFDS, but it is very comforting to know that they are there if we ever do need them,” she added. The highest bidder of the day was Brendan Dowd purchasing a pizza oven for $1,000. The event has been held for over 20 years with approximately $35,000 raised at this year’s auction. The RFDS made 137 landings in Olympic Dam last year alone, landing approximately three times a week to assist someone within our community.
BHP Billiton to the rescue with childcare relief By Vanessa Switala
T
he Roxby Early Learning Community Group and BHP Billiton announced on Friday night that they would team together in order to meet the childcare shortage in Roxby Downs. The Roxby Early Learning Community Group approached BHP Billiton for support to assist in providing a solution to the current childcare shortage since the closure of child care centre Little Rascals on June 24 this year. The local, incorporated not-for profit organisation, the Roxby Early Learning Community Group has been operating since 2009 to provide specialised educational classes for three year olds. Stefan Buys, Olympic Dam Asset President, said, “We were thrilled to receive the proposal from the Roxby Early Learning Community Group which shows they are a professional organisation committed to
developing and caring for the children within our community. “Our partnership will see the Roxby Early Learning Community Group operate from the former Little Rascals site in Roxby Downs and provide long day care for children between the ages of three months – five years old, Monday to Friday, along with expanded educational classes for two, three and four year olds. “BHP Billiton, as the primary funder, is pleased to partner with a local community organisation to meet this community need, and we look forward to seeing the RELCG up and running in their new location soon.” The centre will start recruiting a full team including a Director, Qualified, Unqualified and Administrative staff, immediately with a potential start date of November 14 pending the approval process with DECS (Department of Education and Children’s Services), DEEWR (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations) and other relevant authorities.
RELCG Chairperson, Sally Bryant, said, “We are very excited to be able to partner with BHP Billiton and provide an expanded quality service to the children and parents in the Roxby Downs area.” “We will continue to operate under our philosophy of providing a caring, encouraging environment with opportunities for young children to explore, create and have fun, maximising their enjoyment and development in their early years,” she added. “Initially, we will have 32 long day care places per day as well as 30 specialised class spaces per day for two to four year olds. The centre will be open from 7am – 6pm daily and operate 50 weeks of the year.” “I would like to thank our hard working committee for all the preparation and planning work that has got us to this stage, and to BHP Billiton for their financial assistance in our expanded venture,” Mrs Bryant said. Enrolments can be made by contacting the Roxby Early Learning Community Group at 0439 683 609 or roxbyelcg@gmail.com.
