Streaming is next step for RoxFM says new manager J

ulian Tregenza is new in town but soon enough he will be a familiar face in the community as he takes up his job as the manager of RoxFM community radio station.

He has great knowledge of the business and has big plans for the near future – plans that include the most expected web streaming.

For two and a half years Julian was at Radio Adelaide, working on their news and current affairs show – The Wire. He has also spent two years as the foreign correspondent for a New Zealand community radio station in Auckland.

With a great background, work experience and ready for an adventure, he saw the position here in Roxby Downs and decided to apply. Although it was hard for him to leave his wife and pets at home, he is sure he will be kept busy until they relocate here at the end of January.

“I decided I was ready for an adventure and radio is my passion, especially community radio so I decided to try this job here.”

He has never been to Roxby before, although he had stayed in Andamooka for a while when he was just a little boy.

“I grew up in Central Australia so I love coming here and seeing the colour of the dirt. It reminds me of being a kid playing it in.

“I had no idea on how Roxby was so I was actually surprised. I guess I had pre-conceived notions on how a mining town is and when I got here a couple of weeks ago to have a look around, I loved it. I was surprised how beautiful the town is.”

The new station manager has big plans for the station’s near future.

“I have got plans. There are some exciting things on the horizon. I have some ideas not just for the station but also to increase the relationship between the station and the people of Roxby

Downs. But I still have to meet with the Board and discuss my ideas with them and see what they think,” he explained.

“Some of the stuff I want to do is definitely for RoxFM to go streaming. That needs to happen immediately. So web streaming is something I have started speaking to people about and if everything goes according to plan, it will be a reality soon,” Julian stated.

Internet radio (also known as web radio, net radio, streaming radio and e-radio) is an audio service transmitted via the internet. It presents listeners with a continuous stream of audio that cannot be paused or replayed.

Internet radio services are usually accessible from anywhere in the world, which for such a multicultural community like ours means that, family and friends of our international locals could listen to RoxFM and know more about our community.

Although Julian has great plans and project he wants to start, he said that he is impressed and happy with the way things had been run at RoxFM so far.

“My message for the current volunteer DJs is to keep up the great work.

“I have met some of the DJs, have listened to quite a few of the shows and I think they’re fantastic. I would like to get more people involved of course, and increase the live content but that is for later on. If the DJs keep doing what they are doing, it will be quite an easy job for me.

“In terms of professionalism, the DJs from RoxFM are as good as, or even better than the ones in big community radio stations.

Coming from Radio Adelaide where we had 500 volunteers, you only really know a tiny group of people you see everyday so I think it’s far better to be part of a smaller group that works so well together.”

RoxFM has over 20 DJs who volunteer their time to the community by presenting various radio shows and keeping the town entertained and updated with news and music.

MILO in2CRICKET comes to Roxby Downs again

With this year’s Ashes Test Match just around the corner, cricket officials are now looking towards regional South Australia to find the next generation of Australian players.

The SA Cricket Association kicked off its MILO in2CRICKET School Clinics in Roxby Downs. It was the first of nine weeks of clinics where more than 43,000 children will be introduced to cricket.

Over coming weeks SACA staff will be visiting 320 schools across South Australia to spread the word about local clubs and schools who are running the MILO in2CRICKET Program this summer.

The MILO in2CRICKET program is the national entry level program for children.

Schools and clubs running the Program receive free equipment, free coaching resources and a Coordinators Pack.

“The children who are participating also receive a MILO in2CRICKET kit including a cricket bat, ball, t-shirt, bucket hat, backpack, MILO and certificate,” coach Amy explained.

“MILO in2CRICKET is cricket’s grassroots program for girls and boys. It is a great way to learn some new skills and socialise – and it’s a lot of fun,” said MILO in2CRICKET state manager Alice Johnswood.

“If we can get young children to enjoy sport, get outside and have some fun, then that’s a great result. Cricket is a very social sport, particularly in regional communities, so it is important also to have younger players coming up through the system,” she concluded.

Amy has played cricket since she was only six years old so she definitely understands how introducing a sport to a child can later become their career path. She now plays professionally for the Australian Women’s Cricket Team, Scorpions, and is happy to share her skills and passion with children throughout Australia.

“This program is for children from reception to year 2 and we help them get a feel of the game and try every aspect of it like bowling and batting.

“I love teaching new things to the kids and hopefully they can really enjoy it now and keep playing in the future, professionally or not,” she told The Monitor.

The MILO in2CRICKET program caters for boys and girls, introducing them to cricket and its skills in a fun, safe and healthy environment.

MILO in2CRICKET runs in two age groups – MILO in2CRICKET - Have-A-Go for 5-7 year olds (or first time participants), giving young children a fun way to learn new skills. For children in the 7-10 age group (or second/third time participants), MILO in-

he children from the Roxby Downs Kindergarten have extra reasons to enjoy the arrival of spring, as SGIC provided them with a $2,000 grant to create an interactive garden bed.

“We have used this money to grow a vegetable garden and the children are learning about plant lifecycles, caring for a garden, how to use garden tools, compost, etc,” said Anna Daly, who works at the Kindy.

Also according to her, the children have also enjoyed growing potatoes and have been fascinated at how the potatoes grow under the ground.

“The children have learnt some interesting facts, such as growing marigolds with tomatoes helps reduce aphids and other insects from eating tomatoes.

“We have also planted miniature fruit trees – oranges, nectarines, mandarins, lemons, and a passionfruit vine.

And now we are now looking forward to harvesting our garden produce and using it for cooking.

“The garden has provided the children with another outdoor environmental learning area, with the bonus of being edible,” Anna said.

Numerous studies show that the outdoors remains the healthiest environment for children and adults.

Gardening with children is one of the easiest ways to reap the benefits nature offers. Children with access to green outdoor spaces play more creatively and score higher on tests of self-discipline, according to a University of Illinois study.

The study shows that nature and gardening are the best stress relievers. Recent studies by the American Dietetic Association found that children who garden eat more fruits and vegetables.

So, not only the children of our local kindergarten are having a very enjoyable time looking after their very own garden, but they are also learning to become healthier people.

Roxby volunteers graduate

By Millie Thomas Let’s take a second, and ponder where we would be without our Ambulance volunteers.

What would happen to the little boys who break their legs, the revellers on a Saturday night who drink too much, the victims of a house fire?

Seventy-five per cent of regional South Australia is monitored by volunteer ambulance officers. These are people like you and I, who give up their personal time to be on call in the case of an emergency.

Whether it be 3am or 3pm, the ambos are there to look after us.

Last Monday, September 6, nine ambulance volunteer recruits graduated from the first part of their studies, receiving Certificate II in Emergency Medical Service 1st Response. The recipients of this certificate, Kathy Barnes, Theresa Boulton, Zara Daniel, Peter Dospisil, Cameron Griggs, Brian Harris, Debbie Tabay, Magriet van Neikerk and Peter Walters.

“It’s the start. We like to think of the volunteers having a career, it’s a second career for them. It’s the first qualification they can get (Cert II in EMS first response) and it takes no more normally than six months. Upon completing that they are then a member of a team of two, who can go out as ambulance officers and support the community,” said Mr Sutton.

“This Certificate II completion ceremony is the first in Roxby. Nine recruits got the certificate. It is good because the other ambulance volunteers who had previously completed their Cert IV, it actually took them three years before they were able to go out as a second member on a crew.

“These guys are already half way through their certificate IV, which is as far as they need to go.

“We need lots of people to volunteer for the ambulance service, and all we ask is that they do their training, that they give us two or three, three or four rosters a month, (so about a 12 hour stint). You will be at home, or at work until you are needed as a volunteer, that’s the sort of commitment we’re after.”

There are a number of opportunities that are associated with ambulance officer volunteering. Whether it be furthering your career as an ambo or furthering study in your paid occupation, the SA Ambulance Service is there to support the aspirations of volunteer ambulance officers.

“The pathways program has been designed to allow people to have that second degree. So once they’ve

done that Certificate II or Certificate IV they can then specialise and have a look at what they want to be.

“Later on down the track at about the fifth year mark, we’ll start to take civilian courses, and allow the volunteers to sign themselves up to civilian courses at our expense and give something back to them. So if they’re working in the front office, and they want to be the manager, and do a Certificate IV in business administration, or it might be some sort of an engineering certificate, anything that will focus them to their career and add value to their other career that’s what we want to be able to try and do for them,” said Mr Sutton.

By Millie Thomas It must be hard being a Kiwi. Ellen Parker, who was on exchange with SA Ambulance Service for two weeks, was at the receiving end of a variety of jokes when she visited Roxby last week, but graciously, took it all in good humour.

Mrs Parker visited Roxby and a number of different locations across northern South Australia, with SAAS and was impressed with the hospitality and plateau skyline we so often dismiss.

She told The Monitor exclusively of her trip.

“The exchange program has been going for about five years now I think. We started off by going to the Volunteers for Central Regions conference in Adelaide and were shown to numerous different places of interest,” said Mrs Parker.

“I was then hosted by Lee (Dale, far northern guide for Ellen). He is based in Whyalla. We went down the Eyre Peninsula visiting all of the volunteer ambulance stations en route which was just fantastic.

“One of the things I have really enjoyed is staying with the volunteers and getting to know them on a more personal basis. I’m very impressed with the fact that despite the distances you guys have to cover here, there’s never a stand down, there’s always somebody available to go on the road in an emergency.

“I was then treated to a trip up the Nullarbor. We went to all of the little places of interest on the way, the settlements and down to the coast to see the rugged cliffs; I was very impressed with everything that has to offer.

“I did a training session at the Cummins Station and that was very interesting. I feel that your training is of a better calibre than what we use in New Zealand and there’s more support, it’s more structured, it’s well coordinated and it’s standardised.

“I’ve also been all the way up to Coober Pedy! It’s absolutely fascinating! I’ve never seen a place like it in my entire life. We went to some of the underground places of interest; we were treated to a little tour of the town by Tracey the volunteer up there.

“The country side is mostly flat, but there’s a lot to be seen, it’s amazing actually,” said Mrs Parker.

Kristina Meredith - A worthy recipient of Community Person of the Month

By Millie Thomas If you don’t know who Kristina Meredith is, you must have been living under a rock. She has graced our airways every week as the Manager of RoxFM since 2008 and is a prominent member of a number of boards and committees around town.

So obviously community minded, Kristina is leaving Roxby in the coming weeks (as previously reported in The Monitor) but that doesn’t mean we as a town will neglect to acknowledge her initiative and commitment towards the community.

“Yes very, it is a huge honour,” Ms Meredith said of winning Big Sky’s Community Person of the Month for August.

“I’ve been involved in various aspects of the community since moving to Roxby in 2007.

“I’ve been involved with the Environment Forum as a member since 2007, and took on the role of chairperson in 2009. I’ve been involved with the Arts and Culture forum on and off over the years and was involved in the 2009 Red Earth Festival (I held workshops and coordinated PR).

“I’ve been working at RoxFM since 2008 and have contributed many hours of volunteer time to the station, both on air and behind the scenes. And finally, I initially got involved with Arid Recovery in 2007 and have loved every minute of it. I’ve done animal tracking, trapping, supplementary feeding and tours.

“I’ve really enjoyed putting time and energy to different aspects of the community. It has been an opportunity for me to pursue various interests and passions, and share these experiences with others in the

process.

“I’ve also really enjoyed getting people involved in projects I’ve been working on as this really fosters the concept of community spirit.

Ms Meredith, who is leaving with her fiancée Greg Latham, to be married in Adelaide and finally reside in Melbourne, has mixed feeling about leaving Roxby.

“I’m really humbled by this nomination, but am grateful for the opportunity to raise the profile of volunteering opportunities in the community,” she said.

“I have loved my time here in Roxby and the friendships that have grown as a result, and I am fortunate enough to be able to take many fond memories of the Roxby - and volunteering - experience with me wherever I go.”

New forum to begin - Women’s focus

For the first time in the Community Board’s 5 year history a new forum is to be established. In May of this year the Board approved the establishment of a new forum, tentatively called the Women’s Network, as a subcommittee.

This approval is in response to the success of the International Women’s Day function on 8 March and subsequent events and functions that have brought women together and raised funds at the same time. The Women’s network will have the same status as a forum and will be run by an executive committee that will include a Community Board representative and the Executive Officer. The membership base will be developed and members will have the opportunity to get involved in organising events and participate in other volunteering opportunities. The Women’s network will be used to promote job vacancies, deliver professional networking and development opportunities and create social functions that encourage all women from across the community to join in and participate.

A database that was developed following International Women’s day is already being used to promote job opportunities and events. Connecting to the Community Board is a way to formalise the network, provide insurance coverage and governance support and the ability to attract grants, sponsorship and distribute funds.

“Mallee To The Valley”- Car 812 Goes The Distance In The 2010 Variety Bash

By Andrew Winterfield and Kate Hobbs Car 812 has recently returned from the 2010 Variety Bash. Entitled “Mallee to the Valley”, the 2500 km Bash was tackled by 80 cars over eight days starting in Murray Bridge (Mallee) and concluding in Clare (Valley).

Roxby locals Andrew Winterfield and Kate Hobbs, along with Barossa locals Janine Walker and Lyn Hobbs gave Car 812 a “kids” theme by dressing up as Sesame Street characters for the Bash. Cookie Monster, Super Grover, Bert and Ernie definitely brought smiles to many children’s’ faces along the Bash tracks.

A cold and drizzly day met the Bashers at the start line in Murray Bridge on Day 1. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the Bashers, or the locals who turned out in droves to meet the many colourful characters and cars of the Bash and farewell them on the 8 day trek. Music from a local school and a hearty breakfast sizzling on the BBQ prepared the group for departure. Following a speech from the local Mayor, Variety were proud to be able to present a brand new mini bus to a disadvantaged children’s’ support group in Murray Bridge to allow them to travel to sport and functions around the area.

With the presentations done, the engines were warmed as the top 10 fundraising cars were announced over the start line. The top 10 fundraising cars within the Bash each receive a gold door panel and, with the generous support of the Roxby and Barossa communities, Car 812 was able to achieve a gold door panel as the 8th highest fundraiser.

Over the next 8 days, the Bash travelled through

South Australia, Victoria and up into New South Wales stopping for nights in Loveday, Lake Cullulleraine, Mildura, Bindara Station, White Cliffs, Broken Hill, Hawker and finishing in Clare. “Its for the kids”, a phrase commonly used amongst Bashers when asked why they do what they do, resonated strongly with the group for the entire week as they dropped into remote schools and communities along the way.

A highlight of the Bash was a half day stop at Bindara Station. The lawns of the station overlooking the Darling River were turned into a raceday meet complete with jockeys, wine tents, food, bookies and fashions on the field. Kate Hobbs traded her Cookie Monster outfit for a French themed costume to compete with a fellow Basher for fashions on the field while the rest of the members of Car 812 competed in the hotly contested “Camp Oven Cook Off ”.

The real highlights of the Bash though were the chances to stop and make a difference in the lives of children who need it. Along the way Variety presented a number of grants including a customised bike for a disabled child who couldn’t ride a conventional bike and a grant for air conditioning on the house of a child whose condition prevented them sleeping well in summer. The true spirit of Variety shone on these occasions as many Bashers admitted that the smiles on the children’s faces and the appreciation of the parents is why they

keep coming back year after year.

A big part of the Bash is the car themes with an award being presented to the best theme on the final night in Clare. Fairies, Pirates, Mad Maxes and A Bug’s Life were all Bash favourites and there was a hot contest between the “furry” themes of Kung Fu Pandas, Penguins and of course Sesame Street. However the honour was taken by a pair of company directors from Adelaide dressed as the “Bananas in Pyjamas”. National Science week. Although held nationally from 16 – 20 August, was celebrated last week for RDAS students.

Year R- 2 Science teacher Renae Methofer and year 3 - 6 Science teacher Georgina Arthur celebrated the week with numerous activities planned for the children, including a visit from Helen Crisp of Arid Recovery, to teach the children a little more about biodiversity in their backyard.

“As part of science week we have organised class challenges, we have daily ‘What am I’ animals and plants challenges for classes, we’ve got an A – Z of biodiversity around Roxby Downs,” said Ms Methofer.

“We’re also doing poster competitions about caring for our desert ecosystem and a colouring in competition and just different activities as part of our science week that promotes the biodiversity of our arid region ecosystem.

“I organised for Helen (Crisp) to come out to two of our classes today to talk about Arid Recovery, our local ecosystem and how we can look after the plants and animals within it. That’s been our focus this year for science week!” she said.

Helen was excited to be speaking to students, once again promoting the work Arid Recovery do and also creating awareness about the important projects on hand.

“I guess the main thing is to make them aware of the unique environment that we live in and how it’s a great environment, with different plants and animals. A lot of people don’t realise that,” said Ms Crisp.

“I’m also here to give the students some information about Arid Recovery and how we’re trying to help the

Jim McCarthy is a member of the Hornridge Football Club but he is certainly known by the players of all football teams that play in Roxby Downs.

For the whole year he follows the games on Saturdays, but he does a little bit more than those who are just there to have a good time. Jimmy, as he is known locally, has collected cans around the footy oval throughout the season and then sold them.

He raised $1,000 with this activity and donated the money to the Roxby Downs Junior Football Association (RDJFA).

The Association president Matthew Daddow welcomed the donation with

open arms and said to be very proud of this action.

“Jimmy has done a great job by collecting all the cans and not only keeping the oval clean, but now making the donation of the money raised to the Junior Football Association. He is doing this for the community.

“Hornridge members have always been great supporters of the RDJFA and many of their great players have been part of the juniors,” he said.

Jim also coached the Bulldogs this year, which were the winners of the Junior Colts this season.

There’s nothing like someone who joins his love for the sport with support to the community.

Farmers may struggle despite rain

The much maligned man on the land could have been excused for thinking this was the year they had the best opportunity to make some serious money and peg back the debt of surviving years of doubt.

With great rains and plenty of sub soil moisture, most crops will reach their full potential and at a time when world grain prices are high. It is not often farmers in Australia and particularly South Australia have all the ducks in a row for a good year, and when they do they have to make the most of it.

Enter the locusts!

With the expected locust plague about to hatch over the next couple of weeks farmers are diligently watching the hatchings in

their big backyards. These hoppers can be controlled to an extent while they are on the ground, but once on the wing they will go from crop to crop devastating what should be the year of years on the land.

Governments have put aside millions for spraying the pests, but at best it will only control the situation, not eradicate them.

We should all spare a thought for the farmers who will struggle to get these potentially record crops off without contaminating their grain with spray residue and/or locusts.

While we may complain about locusts choking the raidators of our cars, or splattering all over the windscreen, it’s nothing compared to what our farmers face.

What news we have this week!

We have had two arrested over ecstasy and cannabis in a shoe, police targetting drink/drug driving on rural roads in the far north and Whyalla regions (such operations have been done in the Riverland, Adelaide Hills, Murraylands and Fleurieu Peninsula areas) and just days later a report from the Australian Medical Journal said that nearly 20 percent of meth and ecstasy users who arrived in the emergency room, showed signs of brain damage, and most had concentration and mood problems.

Meanwhile, the Corrections Minister said Port Augusta will take on young offenders in a highly disciplined program (media dubbed Boot Camp) with drug testing concurrent to help them become rehabilitated. No doubt alchol and drugs play a major role, if not dominating role in youth crime. And the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council announced handling homelessness would not work

without greater address to alchol and drug prevention.

All eyes turn to this subject and my group, Drug Free Ambassadors Australia has been working hard on this since 1993.

News in brief Mineral exploration rebounds in June quarter Minister for Mineral Resources Development Paul Holloway said total expenditure on mineral exploration in South Australia rebounded in the June quarter to the highest level in nine months.

Mr Holloway says Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show expenditure on mineral exploration in the June quarter rose 41.5% quarter on quarter to $47.7 million compared with the previous three-month period.

Mineral exploration for new deposits comprised $32.4 million, or 67.9% of total June quarter spending, the highest quarterly spending on frontier and greenfields regions in more than two years.

Lower Lakes to be reconnected Minister for the River Murray Paul Caica said the Lower Lakes will be reconnected for the first time in more than two years, with the partial removal of the Narrung Bund.

Mr Caica said a 100m section of the embankment will be removed from early next week to allow water to flow naturally from Lake Alexandrina into Lake Albert for the first time since April 2008.

Mr Caica said this is excellent news for both the communities and environment around Lake Albert, which have been greatly impacted by years of low water levels caused by low River Murray inflows.

“Increased flows into the River Murray system have rapidly increased the water levels in Lake Alexandrina to about 45cm above sea level,’’ he said.

Floods unearth 20km stretch of locust eggs The Australian Plague Locust Commission says egg beds up to nearly 20 kilometres long have been exposed in north-western Victoria after the recent flooding.

Commission director Chris Adriaansen says heavy rain has washed away top soil and revealed the extent of egg-laying in those regions.He says it is unlikely the water will destroy many of the eggs.

“The majority of those eggs, even those that are just below the surface are still likely to survive and hatch, but progressively we will see some of those eggs hatching a little earlier than would normally be expected because of that exposure to the accumulation of heat,” he said.

The locusts are expected to devastate crops in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia when they hatch.

t has been stated in recent weeks that Roxby is ‘full’.

It was insinuated that there were extremely limited houses left in Roxby to be rented or bought, so basically, don’t bother. The Monitor investigated these statements, and found this is not the case for most realtors in town.

Anne Clampet is the O wner / Manager of Austwide Property Services. Her company holds a number of leases throughout town, and she disagreed with this comment.

“No definitely not!” said Ms Clampet. “Roxby is nowhere near the town it was only a couple of years ago. I am sure any of the shop owners and tradies around town would back that. Roxby has had a huge exodus in the last 18 months, especially since the problems with the shaft and insecurity regarding the EIS. “Certainly the time towards the end of last year when there were about 100 vacant properties has gone and rental prices are starting to increase again, but there are also “hidden” vacancies with the number of company houses which are empty and not on the net, she said.

“The number of people in the street, and at functions and venues such as The Tav and Club on Friday and Saturday nights is indicative of the decrease in general numbers.

“Also the number of properties on the market, and once again the number which have been on the market for some time, is also indicative that the town is certainly not full.”

Ms Clampet said, “The general feeling and vibe around the place is certainly less alive and vibrant than it was and I believe this is due to the number of people who have left town, the insecurity of jobs and the high turn over of staff as people are finding other mining towns which offer greater job security at the moment.

“I strongly believe Roxby will bounce back - it is the nature of mining towns to either be in “boom” or “bust”. This seems to be a natural cycle in remote towns, and this is what is happening here.

“I do think rents will rise and vacancies will decrease, although not to the previous levels. It is very difficult to put a time frame on these things as they are subject to many influences, such as the global economy, Government decisions and indeed at this stage even which

She said that if everything falls into place for Roxby - mining taxes, Govt decisions, the shaft, desalination, EIS, GFC etc - that in 12 months time there will be very few rentals available and the prices will have risen by about $50- $70 per week.

Lorraine Aubrey, a sales consultant from Lin Andrews is in agreeance with Ms Clampet. “No I don’t agree with it (the statement that Roxby is full).

It is close though. We’ve still got some properties available. Some of the properties available are leases that are coming up, so they’re not going to stay on the market long.

I guess it depends what you’re after. If you’re after four bedrooms, no they’re not available,” she said.

“It comes under supply and demand with rentals.

If there’s a low supply, the rent goes up because the demand is high, that’s just the catalyst of it, that’s just the way it works.

“We’ve been fine. Not as strong as we have been in the past, but we have still rented out properties in that (slow) time and we still sold properties in that time, but over that period of time, especially with sales, the investors went very shy,” she said.

And finally, Craig Sumsion, Director of Raine and Horne explained that his previous comments were specific to Raine

and Horne. “After the initial flurry, the rental market has settled down a little and the town is basically full, we currently only have two houses available in Roxby Downs, these should not take long to fill,” he said.

“It is hard to predict how rents will rise over the next 6 to 12 months, but I believe we will now see a steady rise. Rentals over the past 18 months to two years fell by up to 25% and they will not shoot up by that amount straight away.

If we keep a steady demand for rental property it will slowly rise, but it will take quite some time to return

to previous levels.

“Sales prices fell over the last two years and the number of sales for the towns was down quite dramatically, I am now seeing far more people inquiring about buying property in the town and the number of sales starting to increase but it has a long way to go while there is still so many properties on the market, but we will start to see that decrease over the next few months.

“Now is a great time to buy there is still choice and the prices have not yet started to rise but they will,” concluded Mr Sumsion.

NZ quake brings back bad memories

Heather Hounslow experienced what it is like to be in New Zealand during an earthquake and talked exclusively to The Monitor about the horror she went through in her earlier years at New Zealand’s biggest earthquake in 1968 - Inangahua was rocked by a magnitude of 7.1.

In the year of the Earthquake, Heather along with some friends was spending 12 months in New Zealand on a working holiday. They were working on tobacco farms.

“All of a sudden we get woken up, at a similar time to the Christchurch Earthquake, we were thrown out of our beds, onto the concrete floor – I was

New Zealand’s second-largest city, Christchurch, has had an estimated NZ$2 billion ($1.44 billion) of damage caused by recent magnitude 7.0 earthquake.

Christchurch, city of about 348,000 people, was placed under a state of emergency after the quake struck at 4:35 a.m. local time on September 4, cutting power, damaging roads, rupturing sewer lines and water pipes and ripping facades off buildings.

The news has brought back horror memories for an Andamooka resident, Heather Hounslow.

“Diane was screaming but we couldn’t get to her.

All we could do was to yell for her to get out and come under the kitchen table, where we were. That was the worst part, not being able to reach her. We couldn’t stand up!” Heather said.

According to Heather, watching the damage on TV afterwards was also horrifying.

“There were eight people killed in that earthquake and it on the news that roads just completely broke up and one man was driving along and the road disappeared and he disappeared too. I keep seeing that in my mind all the time.

“The noise is deafening and you don’t realise for a few minutes what happened. And the aftershocks keep going on for days and days.”

Heather acknowledges that she and her friends were lucky to survive but the memories and the horror of an earthquake cannot be forgotten, even after all these years.

Liberals defer decision on Arkaroola mining The South Australian Liberal Party has deferred a decision on whether to support a ban on mining at Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges.

The Greens are trying to legislate to ban mining in the outback wilderness sanctuary.

A Liberal Party conference at Port Lincoln has discussed the issue, but Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond says a decision is yet to be made be-

Woomera... Meet Tom Kruse!

In early June of this year, the University of Melbourne troop returned to Woomera once again.

On their last tour of 2008 they were interested in observing relics of the Cold War. Their aim was to design a stage set for the dramatisation of Sidney Courtier’s epic 1967 novel See Who’s Dying.

Courtier, an Australian crime fiction writer, had written a James Bondish kind of plot in which Woomera was implicated in a Communist China plot to develop an underground missile facility in the Australian desert. ‘What next?’ I hear the good people of Woomera ask. ‘Tom Kruse??’

In 2010 our mission drew inspiration from legends in the history of Australian overland travel.

These included people such as Len Beadell, Reg Sprigg, The Leyland Brothers and even stories of Australia’s Muslim cameleers. But the most significant inspiration of all was Tom Kruse, the outback mailman who repeatedly made the epic mail run between Marree and Birdsville in a 1936 Leyland Badger. The multi award winning 1954 film The Back Of Beyond, a docudrama written and directed by John Heyer, became a guiding star for the group. So important was the film that in conjunction with the Woomera Board and Marcus Jones we ordered the film in from the Australian Film and Sound Archive in Canberra and staged its screening as a free event for the Village.

Our evening at the Woomera Theatre on 3 June was one of the highlights for our trip. Marcus Jones gave us a tour of the projector room prior to screening and we experienced the old Thea-

tre’s heart come to life. To watch The Back Of Beyond in the Woomera Theatre was indeed a special treat. At the end of the film, Nadia Jansen van Vuuren gave an impromptu speech and it was then that we learnt that a descendent of Tom Kruse was actually in the cinema and a resident of Woomera. Upon Nadia’s request, Ashley Williams stood up and the audience applauded. The ‘Tom Kruse’ connections didn’t end there. Later we learnt that Mrs Gwen Bannerman (nee Oldfield) from Pimba grew up on ‘Cowarie Station’, a stop along Kruse’s mail route. She knew Tom well. We also learnt that Charlie Payne, who for some time grew up in Marree, had once ridden on the back of Kruse’s truck! It was then that we realised despite the vast distances that epitomise the South Australian outback there is often a strong sense of connectedness and lineage. This has the potential to bind outback communities together.

It was with these stories of outback travel in our minds that we set off on our own journey. On previous trips to Woomera we have been inspired to paint its many varied landscapes and we’d done 5am start watercolour sessions in and around Woomera. Stories of these painting events have become somewhat legendary around the University so on this trip we decided to make painting our chief activity and to put in a solid two weeks painting the desert. From Melbourne we sought the advice of artists such as John Wolseley, Jack Absalom and Alex Mendelssohn, all of who are well-known landscape painters with international reputations. Alex works out of Andamooka where he’s lived since 1959. He taught painting to TAFE students in Woomera between 1979 and 1981 giving classes on Saturdays over several months of each year. At that stage there were about three

and a half thousand people in Woomera and his students comprised many Americans as well as Australian students. Upon hearing of our plans Alex was very generous in offering his time for tuition when we finally arrived in Andamooka.

The defining feature of our painting trip was the construction of a mobile studio or classroom.

Watching The Back of Beyond and reading stories of Len Beadell it became blatantly obvious that if we were going to paint landscapes for two weeks then we would need a good rig as back-up. We were also struck by an anecdote from Beadell in one of his books, where he talked about survival and that often something as simple as a piece of rusty wire could mean the difference between life and death in outback travel. We decided to buy an old steel 6x4 trailer and upon that trailer to construct a box that could store our easels, paints and paper, but would also be a unit from which we could cook, drink, and carry a range of other possibly useful paraphernalia. The trailer took six weeks to build. Some of this gear barely saw the light of day because (thankfully) our trip went so smoothly. The trailer accompanied us on almost every trip out and it became a real conversation-starter.

The most pleasant encounters occurred when we ventured beyond the Traveller’s Village and met some of the real legends of Woomera Village.

Such people never ceased to inspire the student group and we are thankful for the help and advice people gave so willingly. Notably, we got to know the Pimba mob and spent time exploring the Pimba township. We already knew the Hancocks but this trip we also met the Bannerman family and spent time exploring their amazing yard. The Starkey brothers fixed us up with some

roo for a stew and shared some good tales. Charlie and his crew helped us by repairing our trailer.

Paula Mackenzie, Nadia, and Amber Budden from the Woomera Board helped us on more than one occasion and the Observatory crew gave us a fantastic night out at the Woomera Observatory.

We met so many people in and around Woomera and we were struck by their friendliness. Some of our students even made a guest appearance on Woomera radio waves with Mick Ingold. We are indebted to the good people we met at the RSL, the Woomera Sports Club, Spuds Roadhouse and the Kingoonya Hotel all of who welcomed us so warmly.

A combination of events – the rains prior to our arrival and the staging of activities out on the Range – meant that some of our plans were cancelled. We departed Woomera early to move on to Andamooka before heading back to Melbourne.

Back in Melbourne we set up an exhibition of our drawings at the University and this was a resounding success. The trailer took centre-stage and the walls were adorned with amazing images of Woomera. It is a pity that the Woomera people could not easily attend the exhibition, however, the exhibition catalogue took the form of a foldout map and this will be sent to the Woomera Board for pinning up around town. For those who enjoy a drink at the Woomera Sports Club, two paintings by students Dee-Ann Simmons and Emerald Wise are set to make an appearance behind the bar in the coming weeks.

he CFS crew has been busy this past week with the Captain Graeme Austin heading to Ernabela, 500km North of Coober Pedy with training officers from Regional and State CFS. The officers included Region Four Training Officer Phil Tapscott, State Training Officer Scott Haynes and Yongala Brigade Captain Ken Campbell. This trip was organized to hand over a refurbished fire fighting appliance and provide training to the Captain Dudley Dagg and members of the newly formed Ernabella/Pukujta CFS Brigade.

remote community with a vital emergency service.

Brigade Cadet Leader Shelly Brown travelled down to Adelaide on weekend to attend the regional Cadet Conference which organises events and activities for young people involved in the CFS. C o n g r atu l at i o n s a n d thanks to Tapika Hakai who obtained his Heavy Rigid truck licence last week for the CFS. This licence is a valuable asset for CFS members to have to be able to respond the fire appliance in times of an emergency.

Operationally, the crew attended a small camper trailer fire 50 km south of Pimba during the week. Despite the best efforts of the team, the trailer was completely destroyed. The cause is believed to be accidental.

Basketballers get outside coaching experience

he Development Network Squad Program basketballers in Roxby Downs are a talented and fortunate bunch.

Not only do they receive regular training from a State Coach (Wes Knights) but they also have the benefit of gaining outside training from other state coaches.

The Development Network Squad Program (DNSP) is a program to identify and select outstanding basketball athletes aged 11-17 and develop their physical

and mental skills, individual skills and team concepts which will aid them to compete successfully at State and National level.

A couple of weeks ago, the Squad were visited by, SA Country Development Officer and State Coach Peter Todd, enabling them to not only improve upon their already profound talent and skills, but also to get outside perspective.

DNSP Coach Wes Knights explained to The Monitor the reasoning behind the visit, and how the squad is going, with State Tryouts looming.

“Peter came as part of an annual

regional visit. This is his actual job to travel to all regional associations and review development progress,” he said.

“Basically Peter reviews their skill level to assess how they are progressing against other associations and we discuss possible state representations from the squad.”

State Tryouts being only a matter of weeks ago, The Monitor asked Wes how the squad was shaping up. “We are getting there,” he said.

“The squad is working well and extending themselves regularly. I am pretty happy with their progress.”

Ethan Zeptner, Bailey Evans and

Toby Smith are all already State basketball players, and Wes thinks a few more members of the squad may have a good chance at becoming accepted. “From my experience I believe we could possibly have another couple of players make state teams these coming tryouts - Darcey Kenny, Shaun King, Lleyton Western and Adam Ryan.

“We also have a number of young girls in bottom age U14 who could be looking at State Representation in the next couple of years; currently they are not eligible as they are too young.”

The rates assessed on rateable land in the area of the Council will be based on the capital value of land for all rateable land.

Pursuant to Section 167(2)(a) of the Local Government Act the most recent valuations of the Valuer General available to the Council of the capital value of land within the Council’s area be adopted, totalling $722,311,400.

Fixed Charge Pursuant to section 152 of the Local Government Act 1999 a fixed charge of $425 is imposed in respect of each separate piece of rateable land in the Council area.

Hornridge win B and C Grade titles

n the B grade Hornridge played Miners Red. At their last meeting in the Semi Finals Hornridge were far too strong for the young Miners side from the very first whistle but despite less experience than the Magpies, the Miners team pulled out all stops to take it to the experienced and physical Hornridge team.

The beginning of the first quarter saw a fairly even game with both teams feeling each other out and eliminating nerves. By the quarter time break however Hornridge had a handy five goal advantage. Quarter time saw Hornridge replace Briggs with Howard at Wing Attack. Miners regained some of the ground lost in the first and at half time the margin was back to just

three.

With Briggs returning to the game in Wing attack for Hornridge and Miners switching Wilson for Abbott at Centre and Weir for Davis at Wing Defence perhaps hoping for increased drive through the midcourt. The changes however proved fruitless with Hornridge taking the lead back out to five by three quarter time.

The last quarter continued in the same way with Hornridge taking the premiership 39 to 34. Best on Court in the Grand Final, as picked by the umpires, was awarded to Belinda Petherick of Hornridge.

Hornridge and Olympic Dam the only clubs to feature twice on Grand Final night, faced off in the C Grade Grand Final. With Olympic Dam missing their key goaler Bartlett due to illness, Olympic

Hornridge B Grade Premiers Dam was forced to play unfamiliar combinations. Hornridge took advantage of opportunities in the first and by quarter time had established a six goal lead.

Despite changes by Olympic Dam at quarter time with McGuachie into Goal Shooter and Green into Wing Attack they were still no match for Hornridge who had also made positional changes bringing Williams into Wing Defence and Rigden into Wing Attack.

By half time, the Magpies had claimed the game with a ten goal lead. With more errors creeping into Olympic Dam’s game, Hornridge were too strong and capitalised on all opportunities to extend the lead to 14 by three quarter time. Enjoying the breathing space, Hornridge

Gems A grade premiership F

riday night was Grand Final night for the senior netball community and the crowds were not disappointed witnessing GHD Gems take the A grade premiership in their inaugural season and Hornridge take the flags in both B & C grade.

Gems played Olympic Dam in what was set to be a fast, skillful game. Gems made a strong start capitalising on Olympic Dam’s missed scoring opportunities with strong rebounds at the hands of Cuthbert and Mitchell. Gems found themselves with some breathing space at quarter time with a four goal lead.

The game remained even in the second quarter with Olympic Dam unable to reign in any of the four goal margin. The third

With Knights accuracy for Gems and Olympic Dam making some fundamental errors at crucial moments, Gems secured the game in the last five minutes of the final quarter with a five goal lead.
