Local success at SA Regional Awards L

By Millie Thomas

ast Friday night at Roxby Leisure, assorted businesses and personalities from all over the Far North attended the 11th annual Advantage SA Regional awards. The sell out event was a hit, with local caterers Inspirational Foods pleasing the culinary delights of the guests and Roxby Leisure staff ensuring that all needs were attended. The 10 award categories were bombarded with a record amount of nominations from all over the area, with numerous wins and even a new addition to the Telstra Hall of Fame coming from our own Roxby Downs. The Monitor spoke with the Advantage SA CEO Nikki Seymour Smith about what the success of the night meant for Roxby Downs and about the recent profile change to Advantage SA. “I’m absolutely delighted with the outcome of the night,” said Nikki. “There’s a wonderful feeling around the room. For the first time to be here in Roxby, for me it’s just such a wonderful honour to meet so many people that are doing great things in the far north region. To celebrate their success with them, nominees, entrants and winners I’m absolutely delighted. “It’s actually moved a bit around the region (the awards), it’s certainly the first time in Roxby, so to have a sellout and to have so many people travelling – flying in, driving in from Coober Pedy, from Port Augusta, even from Adelaide to come in, it’s an outstanding success as far as I’m concerned. “What I’ve really loved in meeting people here this evening, particularly those who have come from Port Augusta, is

they’ve made a tourism trip around it so they’ve come here, they’ve spent time in Roxby they’ve had a look at the Sturt desert peas, the wildflowers and that’s absolutely fantastic. It’s not just about the night, it’s about exploring the region at the same time. There’s a lot more to Roxby than mining. “I look at the finalists and obviously they’re not actually going home with the pears, but they are really some amazing businesses. It’s great to see Exact Mining nominating themselves, they’re probably a less well known business so that’s great that they can receive an award, as far as we’re concerned, they’re doing great. “Kaye Doyle has been really instrumental in bringing the awards into this region. She really lobbied one of my staff members to say we’ll do it and look anything can happen. So Kaye, the Council, Bill and GHD who are a sponsor, my team who make this happen, to all of the category awards and sponsors and to the government of SA, they really make these things happen. “Thanks very much for your support Roxby, it is really encouraging. It’s great to be here and we hope that they will continue to support the awards. “We hope that the readers of Roxby continue to nominate so that they can get the due recognition they deserve. Often people fly under the radar and whilst that’s lovely, it is really important that we get them nominated and celebrate the success of what people are doing. “Because of the support that the Roxby community have given us it gives us the absolute confidence to bring the awards back here again, we’ll most certainly be back!

the Church, with a Baptism confirmation and renewal of marriage vows of Johannes and Carla Booyens. The couple was accompanied by their children Miguel and Michelle and brought tears to everyone’s eyes when they read vows to each other. Bishop Garry commented during the ceremony that “renewal of vows is even more special than the first marriage vows, because now they really know what they are doing.” After the service in Roxby Downs, Bishop Garry went to Andamooka where he conducted the Holy Communion, had a shared lunch and spent some time with the locals. Last time the Bishop was in Roxby, Reverend Mary had just arrived in town and according to him, she has been doing a great job not only in her role at the church, but with the other factions of the communities.

All domestic water in Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Olympic Dam is supplied from the Great Artesian Basin. The water is desalinated and chlorinated. Use water wisely in an arid climate.

“It is always a great joy for the Bishop to come and see that the church is doing well. And Mary is obviously making good connections, both with the Christians in town but also to the wider community, such as police, the mine and other organisations. “I am delighted with the way Mary has fitted into the Roxby and Andamooka communities and I hope she continues to do the good work she’s already done for the first few months,” he said. He also left a message to everyone: “I hope that everyone has a blessed and happy time at Christmas and that family, friends and God get some priority in the Christmas celebrations. I hope next year is even a better year for the communities and I pray God’s blessing on people from this town always!”

Bishop Garry moved by service After arriving in the early evening of Friday, October 22 Bishop Garry had an early Saturday morning when he had a men’s breakfast with locals, where he spoke about being a Christian man. Also on Saturday, the Bishop participated in activities with the children, as part of the KFC (Kids for Christ) program. “The activity with the children was really good fun. We painted rocks, had games, then we had a shared tea and an informal service, where I preached for. We had a really nice time,” he said. Roxby Downs Scout Group would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the community for their donations and continued support for our bottle drives. Our last bottle drive in September was a great success and we look forward to our ‘Monster Bottle Drive’ next year on Saturday February the 12th. It is a legal requirement from the council that people leave bottles and cans on their property line, not on the footpath or verge, we acknowledge the efforts of people regarding this responsibility and ask that they continue this as requested in our flyers and advertising. Bottle Drives are a major part of our fundraising and the monies are spent on equipment and helping to fund camps for our kids. The next major camp we are planning towards is sending the Cubs to a nine day camp in Canberra, January 2011. Preparations for this camp are well underway for this trip of a lifetime for these lucky 9 and 10 year olds.

Our Joey section has also been busy last term with Minute-To-Win-It competitions. Joeys had to work hard on their concentration skills as they tried to catch a ping pong ball with a container attached to the top of their heads. There was also the challenge of transferring smarties to a bowl using only a straw! Great fun was had by all and Joeys are now looking forward to a sleepover night later this term.

APOMA and OCA Board work on new town management model I

n a major departure from the much heralded Outback Communities Authority management of Andamooka, a new model is being developed in association with APOMA (Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association). After more than 50 years as the major governance authority in Andamooka, APOMA was stripped of many powers when the new authority appointed a town manager in Mr. Bob Jacobs about a year ago. News was leaked last week that Mr Jacobs is being transferred to Pt Augusta and that APOMA will become the responsible entity to the OCA Board in the future governance of the town. The new model currently being developed between the two boards will see APOMA again

become the main contact point for residents. Ever since the appointment of the Board, APOMA and its forthright chairman, Peter Allen have been critical there was no local representation on the new board, a point of disagreement with the Minister, Gail Gago. Although Andamooka still has no direct representation on the Board, APOMA will become the focus group for development giving them the opportunity to give valuable local opinion. OCA Chair, Mr Bill McIntosh told The Monitor, “As we committed at our 30 September meeting with the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association (APOMA), on Saturday 16 October the OCA General Manager and I held another

Regional success at Advantage awards From Front Page... Exact Mining, a contractor to the mining and civil industries both to the Olympic Dam mine and numerous other locations across the country were fortunate enough to win the Westpac Large Business award. Dave Tschirpig spoke about Exact’s success. “Its recognition for all of our work that everyone of us do,” said Dave. “ We didn’t expect to win.” “We deserved to win because of our diverse range of operations that we have and because within the community, we try and do as much as we can, I think that’s key. That comes back to the roots of the owners, and the support that they give to everyone. “Most important is the personnel that make it, I just run it! Pretty much thanks to each and every person that works for Exact Mining,” he said. The Hames Sharley Sustainability Award was won by the Roxby Downs Community Boards’ proactive subcommittee, Roxby Downs Environmental Forum. There to receive the award was Swiss born environmental enthusiast, Patrick Ibele. “I have been with the Environmental Forum for about three years,” said Patrick. “I was definitely surprised at being awarded with this award. I think it’s not just recognition for our Environmental Forum, its recognition that the environment itself needs to be so called saved. “ I think we have to do as much as we can to the environment to keep it up and going, not just for us, but for the future as well. “I would like to thank all of the volunteers,” said Patrick. Shane Hough, a public figure in Roxby Downs, despite having lived here under a year, was the very popular, very deserving winner of the Adelaide Showground Youth Award. “I was very surprised, it was pretty cool,” said Shane, who was strongly supported on the night by his proud family and friends. “I think the award repre-

sents the whole of the Roxby community youth as well, so it’s probably more a representation of that. “I have been working with the youth since the beginning of the year, so it’s been good. I have to thank my parents, my mum, seeing as she is standing right here! Roxby Leisure, RoxFM, the whole community gave me the opportunity to be able to roll out what I was doing,” he said. One of the big thrills of the night was the induction of local conservation project Arid Recovery into the Telstra Hall of Fame. This induction is initiated when a nominee has won a regional award three years in a row. It makes Arid Recovery only the fifth recipient of this award. It will, however, render them ineligible to be nominated in the regional awards for the next three years. Helen Crisp, former general Manager of Arid Recovery was honoured, but not surprised at the announcement. “It’s a real honour, it’s a great recognition of all of the staff, students and the hundreds of volunteers that have helped us over the years in 1997,” said Helen. “As many know, I’m just the representative face of what a lot of people have done over the years. “I was told about it earlier, so I did sort of expect it. It was really great recognition for all of the hard work we put in. “Probably the commitment of everybody involved contributed to this recognition, whether it be staff, students or volunteers and also the high level of research and monitoring that we do. “We’re not afraid to try new things and we’re not afraid to think outside of the square, and I think that makes us different to other conservation programs out there. “Without the support of the community we wouldn’t be there today, and without the support of our major sponsors; BHP, Denar, The University of Adelaide and the Friends Group we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” concluded Helen.

meeting with the APOMA’s Chair Peter Allen and members of the their executive. “The purpose of this meeting was to review our formal agreement explaining how the OCA and the APOMA share responsibility for managing local services and infrastructure. The detail of how we would share those responsibilities is still being considered and has not been finalised. “At the next OCA meeting, members will

consider a range of shared responsibility options, to ensure resources can be used most effectively to meet community needs. All options will first have been discussed with the APOMA before any final decision or announcements are made,” said Mr McIntosh. Both Mr Jacobs and Mr Allen were unable to speak about the new arrangement, but both expected there would be a statement by the Board and or the Minister in the next week.

cott and Jenny Lauder are about to relocate to Clare where Scott will move into the new and exciting sustainable energy industry of wind farm operations. The move from Roxby is with mixed feelings for the couple, but now the decision is made they are looking forward to new opportunities and new challenges. Scott worked for a contract company for 12 months flying in and out of Roxby until an offer from BHP Billiton when the family decided to relocate to Roxby two years ago. “I am leaving a central maintenance supervisor’s role with BHP Billiton to take up the position of Wind Energy Operations Manager with AGL in Clare. The decision was very hard but it all came down to what was best for the family,” Scott said. According to the couple, the experience of remote living had both good and bad sides. “We have a further appreciation for family and friends both here and back in Adelaide,” they said. Although they are very excited about the new experience, the Lauder’s will take lots of good memories of the Roxby community. “We love the Roxby community spirit, as well as the simple life style and all the volunteer work that everyone gets involved with and we will definitely miss that,” Jenny said. She also told The Monitor that “the initial step is always the hardest, the de-

cision to go. The logistics of it all! And saying goodbye to a town that has been our home for the past two years, friends and all is very difficult.” The Monitor family will also miss Jenny not only because she is a wonderful employee, but because she and her family have become special friends to the staff, greeting us all with loving and caring attitude, a big smile and lots of lollies. Managing Editor of The Monitor, John Pick paid tribute to Jenny’s work ethic and loyalty to the business. “Although Jenny worked restricted hours due to family commitments, she managed her workload well and was a delight to have in the office.” Jenny and Scott would like to thank their friends and co workers for the past two years. “Most people here miss the support of having family close by and friends have filled in that gap for us. “We’re sure Taya, our three and a half year old, would like to thank her little friends at Child Care for all the fun times, and the staff whom she loves. We hope to stay in contact with everyone,” they concluded.

ndrew Chin, lead performer for Butterfly Music, has been entertaining children in the Catholic Schools system for nine years, and last week, the students of St Barbara’s Parish School had the pleasure of being exposed to his interactive workshops. They capped off the experience with a huge whole school performance at the end of the day. Performing Christian classics such as “If I were a butterfly” and “These hands”, Andrew’s highly energised and interactive performance saw the students come alive in sing and dance. The Monitor spoke with Andrew about his career and how he came about our little Catholic school. “The truth was I was sitting at the Adelaide Music Festival in 2006 and I remember the announcer saying ‘Roxby Downs’,” said Andrew. “I knew they had been using my music for a while, and I just thought geographically, wow, they have come all of this way! “I sent them an email the next day and said, look I’m just so impressed that you’ve sent your kids that great distance to be part of such a spectacular event and I said, I know that you use my music, and I’d love to come out there one day. “From that day on I had wanted to come up here, it was kind of special for me to come here, to the extreme end of the Catholic school system in South Australia.” A man of religion, Andrew combined his love of Christianity and experience of working with children to form his current career. Prior to this, he had taught primary school children for 20 years. He speaks of his experiences with Butterfly Music, and how our students are a cut above the rest.

I could easily take a couple to the studio and record with them, they were definitely of a high standard. “‘If I were a Butterfly’ is a great song, but probably ‘In the beginning’ is my favourite to perform. I remember when I did that song for the first time I just saw it come alive! When you see a little girl standing next to me that can sing every word, that’s a great powerful song,” said Andrew. “I did a series of workshops with the children from St Barbara’s. (Years Reception – Year two) workshops, (Years three to four) 3 – 4 workshops, (Years five to seven)5 – 7, and a choir workshop, each of them about 45 minutes they take a song each class and then the choir learn the back ups, so it all comes together at the end of the day. “The fact that the students have obviously heard my songs before helps, and plus you’ve also got their musical culture, they’re used to singing, they’ve got a pretty good singing teacher here, Sally, so the quality of their voices is good. “These are some of those children that I could easily take a couple to the studio and record with them, they were definitely of a high standard. “I’d definitely like to come back; it’s amazing to drive into the town. When you drive in, you just go wow, it’s just stunning to think of that facility you have in the centre of town,” he said.

If you’re a working parent expecting a child after January 1st, there’s something else you can expect From 1 January 2011, Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme will start. It’s a new entitlement for working parents, funded by the Australian Government. Taking time away from work for a new baby is a common part of working life. Paid Parental Leave will help parents spend time with a new baby, and help employers retain skilled staff. What is Paid Parental Leave? Eligible working parents of children born or adopted on or after 1 January 2011 may get 18 weeks Governmentfunded pay at the National Minimum Wage, currently $570 a week before tax, to help them care for a new baby. Am I eligible? Full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal, contract and self-employed workers may be eligible. You must have worked at least 330 hours (just over one day a week) for 10 of the 13 months before your new baby arrives. You can have up to an 8 week unpaid break between two working days and still be eligible.

You can earn up to $150,000 a year (individual salary) and still be eligible. Is it for both parents? Yes, usually the mother must apply for Paid Parental Leave. If you are eligible, you can transfer some or all of the pay to your partner (they need to be eligible too). The scheme gives families more options to balance work and family. When can I take it? You can claim up to three months in advance, and your pay can start at any time you choose from when your child is born or adopted. It will be paid in one continuous period from the start date and must all be taken within the first year after the birth or adoption. You are encouraged to apply early.

What about employer-provided entitlements? Eligible parents can receive Parental Leave pay at the same time, before or after other employer-provided paid leave or entitlements. The existing minimum entitlement to 12 months unpaid parental leave for long-term employees is unchanged. What does it mean for employers? From 1 July 2011, employers must provide Government-funded Parental Leave pay through their usual pay cycle to eligible employees who have been with their business for at least 12 months. Other eligible parents will be paid through the Family Assistance Office. Where do I find out more? To learn more about Paid Parental Leave visit the website or call the appropriate number below.

Last week’s Hot Topic: “How do you rate Roxby Downs as a purpose built mining town? Mining towns are all alike. People come and go and we work long and hard and play long and hard. That said I love Roxby. RM. After seeing the community in action last week at the Relay for Life I’d say Roxby Downs rates at the top of mining towns, purpose built or not. What a wonderful and generous town we live in. Jo. RD Relay for Life candlelight ceremony was beautiful. I am sure it touched everyone present. Well done to all participants. It was good fun! First time participant The shades in the main street look very nice and perfect for this time of the year. CM, Roxby Ok so I’m confused is it called Dunes Café or Dunes Child Care Centre? I went in for a quiet coffee one day but was shocked to see kids running freely through the café while Mums did nothing! I really feel for the poor girls behind the counter trying to keep things professional but how are they supposed to do their job when they are having to ask kids to stop running around or stop screaming? I understand that we live in a town with kids everywhere but seriously Mums it’s called having consideration for other patrons. Rather Stay at Home.

My suspicion that abortionists assume the right to kill any baby after birth who they try but fail to kill before birth, is now confirmed however, with the revelation that survivors of abortion are being deliberately neglected to death. One nurse even reports that she was told to drop a surviving victim of an abortion “into a bucket of formaldehyde” (The Age 7/10). News in brief . . . CFS announces fire season dates

The Country Fire Service (CFS) has announced when the official danger season will start in South Australia’s 15 fire districts. The season begins on November 1 in the NorthWest and North-East Pastoral, Flinders, West Coast, Eastern and Lower Eyre Peninsula districts. It will start in other districts on November 15 or December 1. CFS chief officer Euan Ferguson says landholders should be preparing now for the danger season. Outback floods warrant disaster funds

Outback floodwaters and damage left in the northeast of South Australia warrant disaster relief funding, says an outback station owner. The southern part of the Birdsville Track again was closed last week due to flooding. Outback residents will meet next month to discuss what they say is a disaster because of the flooding. Sharon Oldfield from Cowarie Station says she has not sold any cattle all year, which is having an economic impact. SA Government defends empty public housing

Public housing at Port Augusta is empty despite a high number of families on the waiting list, a South Australian parliamentary committee has been told. Lew Owens, an adviser to the Aboriginal Affairs Minister, told the committee the SA Government’s policy of selling 26 houses per year in Port Augusta was counterproductive and resulted in houses being left empty. Liberal housing speaker Vickie Chapman said there was a chronic shortage of public housing and a better system was needed. “The most concerning aspect of this is the decision of the Government to continue to leave houses empty rather than allow families and children to have a safe home,” she said. The SA Government said it would not treat Port Augusta any differently from other regions and 20 public houses were currently under construction there. Page 6 – Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Environmental Forum wins once again at Advantage SA Awards By Millie Thomas

T

he annual SA Advantage Regional Awards meant gold for Roxby’s Environmental Forum, who won the Hames Sharley Sustainability Award for the second time in two years, an accomplishment not to be sneezed at. The Environmental Forum, which was established in 2005 as a sub committee of the Roxby Downs Community Board is forever exercising their initiative in coercing the community into being proactive about the environment around them. The forum is made up of representatives from Council, BHP Billiton and members of the community. The group works togeth-

er to develop strategies and projects that progress the community vision. The forum is led by a group of like minded volunteers who are dedicated and enthusiastic about our town and the environment. The forum is an excellent way for community members to voice their concerns about the current status quo and strive to continuously improve the world in which we all live. The forum meets once a month, depending on the availability of its volunteers. Meetings normally run for an hour and are held at the Roxby Downs Council Boardroom, or the Dunes Café and occasionally at the local tavern. Patrick Ibele, who was at the event last Friday night to accept the award, was hum-

bled. “I have been with the Environmental Forum for about three years,” said Patrick. “I was definitely surprised at being awarded with this award. I think it’s not just recognition for our Environmental Forum, its recognition that the environment itself needs to be so called saved. “I think we have to do as much as we can to the environment to keep it up and going, not just for us, but for the future as well. “I would like to thank all of the volunteers,” said Patrick.

Efficient lighting - Install energy efficient globes and use low watt globes wherever possible. - Turn lights off when not needed – make the most out of daylight (it’s the next best thing to actually being outside!) - Create a romantic atmosphere and use subtle lighting, or use candles instead of turning a light on.

Roxby Downs has marked off another milestone in it’s continuing development, by having held it’s first ever house auction, instrumented by Raine and Horne realtors. Principal of Raine and Horne, Craig Sumsion, conducted the auction last Saturday October 23 and commented on it’s success. “It was not too bad for a first auction,” said Mr Sumsion. “It seemed to be a bit of a talking point around the town, it had a lot of exposure in the media with newspaper ads and radio ads and those sorts of things, so there were quite a few people there on the day. “We didn’t actually have a bidder, so we opened it on a vendor bid and closed it and held it over until midnight that night on a vendor bid. There are now a few people out there showing some business interest. “Now it’s a negotiated sale, so people can come in, make an offer on what they feel is suitable for them and really my job now is to negotiate a price between the purchaser and

the vendor, bring the two parties together and see if we can get it sold. “If people want to do auctions, it is an option for them. I mean I don’t mind doing them but they can be aggressive and a lot of people here, because of the way working hours are, it’s very hard to decide on when you do open inspections and these sorts of things. Most people here prefer to look at a house when they’re available. “At the same time, auctions are very much an aggressive sales campaign within very high and very aggressive markets. Roxby is not that aggressive. “The owners seem to be happy with the outcome, I mean they probably would have preferred the house be sold at the auction

under the hammer but with the amount of interest that the property and the campaign has created, I think that everybody is more aware that it is for sale more so than any other house in Roxby, so there’s a lot of interest and there will no doubt be a few people contacting me over next few days.”

ourettes is a neurological disorder characterised by tics, which are involuntary, rapid sudden movements or vocalisations that occur repeatedly. The person displaying these tics has no control over them and one of our special local kids has been recently affected by the disorder. Amber Goldsworthy-Speirs is well known in Roxby, having been involved in many things in the community such as Netball, Girl Guides, the MS Read-a-thon, the local Church, and she has even had her own column at The Monitor newspaper. According to her mother Alison Speirs, Amber started off with an unexplained twitching of her head which she could not stop and which got worse. “It was very worrying. We were referred to a Neurologist in Adelaide, who later confirmed Tourettes disorder to us,” Alison told The Monitor, in this exclusive interview that aims to let the people that are part of the family’s life understand what they are going through. “I started off with a slight twitching of the head; we called the hospital and they said to come in, the twitching got more obvious and more frequent. A few weeks later I was taken to the Adelaide hospital for an MRI, it was there that they also confirmed that I had tourettes and about a month later the vocal tics started as well as several other tics,” Amber explained. Her mother added “Amber does not have any tics when she is asleep, but I hear them

as soon as she wakes up. It is pretty full on having my daughter swear at me and her siblings first thing in the morning and through the day. Some days I find it hard to cope with this.” Alison says “It is quite embarrassing for Amber to go out in public at the moment, to be in a new situation or when she meets people for the first time, as she gets very nervous, which means her tics get worse. “At the moment she has many vocal tics so it is a bit obvious. It is also easier for her to avoid quiet places,” Alison said. “I think it is annoying as I can’t do some of the things I want or would usually do such as going to the movies, church and anywhere which is quiet. Another thing that is embarrassing is people may stare at me when I go down the shops and I may yell out random things or swear words,” Amber said. She added that schooling has been difficult as well but she has been receiving lots of support from family and friends. “Mum has been pretty good with everything (except for the occasional off day where she gets a bit emotional about it all) and Dad is still getting used to the whole thing (he is kind of in denial). My school/class has also been very supportive so I would like to thank every single one of them for that,” she said. Alison also explained “It is very up and down for us all at the moment as we learn to cope and manage her tics – it has only recently been diagnosed. Apparently it always gets worse before it gets better, and it is always worse around puberty.” She said some days the tics are easy to manage as they are pretty low key, and at

SAM LAUNER’S FAREWELL

By Bev Zeptner

Regina Danielle Gilles, egan Qualmann, Ma dfield, Ol Keely, Traceyatpick, Kath Curkp m , Dee Berth Sa Launer

On behalf of the Woomera and Districts Football League, it is my honour to introduce to you one of the recipients of this year’s Merit Award. Since arriving in Roxby Downs in 1990, Peter Lindner has been heavily involved in the Olympic Dam Football Club, offering his services as a Captain, President, an award winner and a life member, to name but a few. Peter was one of the original movers in getting the Olympic Dam Football Clubrooms to be come a reality. Love or loathe the OD Devils, for anyone who has been to the town and seen the facilities it is a great example of what can be done in the bush to make our game greater. In his early days Pete was a staunch OD Devil but he always had the interest of the total league at heart and this was shown after he retried from playing and become W&DFL’s President and is now a member of the SANFLCFL. His attitude in these roles as when he was a footballer was that there were no such things as “can’t” and took on many challenges to ensure football thrived both in the town and in the

district. His “love hate “relationship with the council was a great example and quite humorous to those on the outside. In his playing days Pete was heavily involved in rep football for many years, mainly the Mortlock Carnival. Over time the leagues participation in this carnival fell away and there was no representative football. Possibly over a beer and a white wine with a partner in crime of his the concept of the “Miners’ Cup” was born. This is as most of us know is a interleague match between the W&DFL and the Broken Hill Football League played annually at AAMI Stadium as a curtain raiser to a Port Power AFL game. This again showed Pete’s “can do” attitude. Pete is the type of person who gets an idea in his head and follows through with it, no matter the challenges. His passion for finding ways to offer opportunities to local footballers is unrivalled, and sometimes controversial. And yet, these controversies seem to ignite a dormant passion within others, sparking conversations that often lead to the development of even greater football opportunities for locals.

Pete Lindner recognised for his efforts

Travel Greyhound invites you to see Australia with them G

By Celeste Lustosa

reyhound Australia is the country’s only national coach company. They travel to over 1100 destinations in Australia daily, ensuring that passengers can get off the beaten track and truly experience the beauty our country has to offer. At Greyhound, they have over 100 years experience and are one of the

oldest operating coach companies in the world. The company started its business in Roxby Downs on December 2007 and now have 11 drivers, nine coaches and two Coasters based locally to attend to our thriving community. Greyhound covers Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam and Roxby Village as well as caters to the mine site. “We also go to Adelaide and stop off in Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Port Wakefield and Bolivar on return trips. Our express service runs every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday leaving here at 11.00pm and get into Adelaide at 7.25am, leaves Adelaide at 18:00 pm and gets into Roxby at about 03:25 am,” said the company’s manager Elna Edwards. Greyhound Australia has a na-

tional fleet operating 365 days a year. They carry 1.3 million passengers over 29 million kilometres a year with a safety record second to none. “Greyhound wants you to have a great experience. So every Greyhound bus is driven by an experienced Coach Captain, who knows an awful lot about everything Australian, and a fair bit about nothing too, making for an entertaining trip!,” she said. Greyhound not only provides commuter and tourist services, they are also one of Australia’s largest charter bus company. The company provides regular contracted charter services to many companies and one-off charters to all types of events. Be it a football game, or a mining site, a school trip or a wedding, Greyhound can provide comfortable, reliable charter bus travel. Greyhound bus services allows you to take in the best Australia has to offer, and with a wide variety of ticketing options you can travel at your own pace, hopping on and off as many times as your ticket allows, or, you can simply choose your origin and destination and design your own trip along the way. With Greyhound Australia you

can do it all your own way, without the queues and security nightmares of airports. Every bus in their fleet is fitted with large, panoramic windows and oversized seats so that you can sit back, relax and let them drive while you enjoy the view. All of the large coaches have onboard bathroom facilities and our onboard entertainment always promises a barrel of laughs and drama. You’ll be travelling with people just like you, to places that look just like the brochures say. It’s a mighty fun way to see the land down under and who knows, you might just make a few new friends along the way. Greyhound is also a great supporter of our community. “We support the community as much as possible. We do discounted charters for all the schools and also the sports clubs in town. The Roxby Golf Club, Relay for Life, Roxby Races and The Bullride, among others,” Elna Edwards concluded. From the ocean to the outback, the mountains to cities, Sydney to Perth and right to the tips of our continent, Greyhound provides the most comprehensive travel service in Australia. When you travel by bus you get time to see, feel, touch, smell and taste your way across our sunburned country. So we really want to ask you: Have you SEEN Australia yet?

Tips for bus travellers ling limitations, such as blackout dates during which the ticket will not be honoured. Carry on bags must fit in the overhead rack or under your seat. Special rules apply to such items as skis and bicycles; contact the bus company for specifications before your trip. Greyhound suggests arriving at the terminal at least an hour before departure; get there even earlier, especially when travelling during busy seasons. Seats are not assigned, and boarding is usually on a first-comefirst-serve basis. Also remember that in coaches equipped with

Source: www.alltraveltipscom There’s something “zen” about long bus trips; being an anonymous face in the sea of travellers, being away from all the stresses and distractions of your every day life, losing yourself in a good book or allowing yourself to kick back and “zone out” as mile after mile rolls by you - sometimes for daysdemanding patience and affording leisure time that you will rarely find elsewhere. Bus travel is inexpensive, flexible, and widely available throughout Australia. Before purchasing a ticket, look into all possible options for the best deal. Students, seniors, persons in the military and children can usually ride at discounts. Companion fares offer a discount on one fare with the purchase of a full fare ticket. Advanced purchase tickets are usually cheaper than last minute. For the more freespirited adventurer, Greyhound Discovery Passes can be purchased for virtually unlimited travelling freedom within your chosen region for anywhere from four to sixty days. Be sure to inquire about limited time specials that might be running; even if you are making a round trip, sometimes taking advantage of sale prices on two one-way tickets can save you money. Keep in mind, however, that tickets purchased for limited sales usually have travel-

lavatories, the bathrooms can sometimes get- well, rank! - And getting stuck sitting near them can be unpleasant, to say the least. Any time the bus stops, know that it will depart without you if you are not back before the scheduled time. Make no mistakethe driver will not wait for you, nor will any belongings you leave in your seat or on the overhead racks be removed. If you miss the reboarding call, someone just may end up in your seat, leaving you stuck at the terminal to wait for the next bus.

The grants, which were presented to Therese Schofield of the Andamooka Football Club and Peter Allen of APOMA will help to recoup the high and varied costs of running a football club and help to further train and provide amenities to the local swimming pool, which needs to be updated to comply with changed legislation. The Monitor spoke with Therese, Peter and Lyn about the benefits of these grants. “Obviously, this year, Andamooka lost the tender for the bar at the Roxby Downs football oval, which was big income,” said Therese. “We decided to apply for the grants to recoup some of the money we spent on equipment throughout the season and all of our medical supplies and stuff like that, which just helps the club out because we have an enormous amount of costs as any other club would know. “It’s just wonderful that we were successful in receiving the grant,” said Therese. “We have never received a grant such as this before; it’s $3000 which is fantastic. It won’t recoup everything, but it’s a huge difference for us for the start of next season and recouping what we have got. It’s

just so much easier knowing that we do have some pressure off for next year. “We’re always buying shirts and socks and medical supplies and any other thing we need throughout the year.” She said, “We will discuss as a club what the money is going to go towards at the next committee meeting and see where it’s best set to go, but to me I think its best designed to recoup some of the running costs, because they are ongoing every year and every season. “I think we will apply for it next year and Lyn has said that they are great little grants and they’re available to everyone. “I’d like to thank Lyn Breuer and the Government. Also to all of the wonderful committee members that we’ve got who are doing the extra stuff to get these sorts of things,” Therese said. Peter Allen of the Andamooka Progress Opal Miners Association (APOMA) said the additional cheque that he received will help further the development of the town in keeping up with complying government regulation. “We received our grant for volunteer training for the swimming pool,” he said. “It will make sure that the pool can go ahead again this year with people fully qualified and with all of the resources. “We applied for the grant in August, so it hasn’t taken long. The timing is perfect because we’re just

coming into the swimming pool season. “It will be the same as last year, but some of the requirements have changed. They’ll be well resourced this year. “The training of the lifeguards is happening as we speak and then they’ll be resourced with a laptop computer to control the records and information that we have to and a whiteboard, medical supplies, all that sort of thing. “I’d like to thank Lyn,” concluded Peter.

Souls’ Day. We will be celebrating by remembering all those that have past. “We invite everyone to come along, bring a chair, a little table, a drink and light a candle not only for their loved ones but for all the souls,” he said. Joseph also said that a candle will be lit at each grave at Andamooka’s cemetery. “Last year we lit a candle on each grave and this year we will do it again. It looks really beautiful,” he concluded

Good Housekeeping at work and home Both these slides demonstrate commitment to housekeeping as the first step towards improving safety in the workplace. Both contractors illustrate simple and effective changes brought about by organisation and not accepting clutter as an acceptable

norm in the workshop. Poor housekeeping not only introduces a wide range of associated hazards but can impede access, cause damage/loss of equipment, allow accumulation of trapped debris (dust, paper, vermin) which may further exacerbate the hazard

Council is unable to assist and recommends that residents contact BHP Billiton main gate on 8671 8262 or BHP Billiton’s Environmental Sec on on 8671 8369. If available they will arrange for an experienced snake handler to remove the snake for you.

Roxby Downs is located in the North West Pastoral District and our fire danger season starts on November 1st until March, 31st and this is a time when people should clean around their houses. “We recommend for people that whatever they think looks like a fire hazard they need to trim it out,” said Trevor Kroemer, Fire Prevention Officer of Roxby Downs Council. The Council has also been working closely with BHP to get the company’s area and properties cleaned up too. “We will be dealing with BHP Billiton and getting areas cleaned up. “At this time, people’s back fences around reserves need to be cleaned. It is going to show up the people that throw things up around their back fences, which is wrong, because it’s not fair on people who do the right thing all year long to be cleaning up for other people as well as in the worst scenario have to deal with fire danger. Council will be monitoring and advise people to clean certain areas that might be a fire hazard danger. People can be fined and deal with legal consequences if they don’t clean up after a fort night. “Once people are advised they need to clean, they have two weeks to get it done and after that they need to face legal consequences,” Trevor said.

Local cricket season up and running

By Geoff Hayball

The 2010-11 Cricket Season kicked off on Saturday October 9 with two T20 games played on the Roxby Oval. The first game was between Rogues and Olympic Dam. Olympic Dam batted first and was 8/88 at the completion of their 20 over batting stint. Best of the OD Batsmen were Seb Holbrook on 28 and Craig Nicholls on 18. Best of the bowlers for Rogues was the veteran Barry Dadleh with 3/10 off 4 overs and promising young 13-year-old leg spinner Matthew Hayball with 3/17 off 3.4 overs. Rogues then went into bat with Paul Trotta and Adrian Boulton opening and they passed the 88 runs required with no wickets down in the 13th over. Boulton making a well compiled 51 runs not out and Trotta a good solid 35 runs not out. Straight after Andamooka played Woomera and I believe Woomera

won this game but unfortunately no stat sheets have been provided as yet. Saturday 16th October 2010 saw another double-header played at Woomera. This time the standard 40 over games. The first game played was between last year’s Premiers Wanderers and third placed Olympic Dam. Wanderers batted first and could only muster up 53 runs with Brad Cox top scoring with 25 runs and Ryan Briggs 17. Olympic Dam passed the score in the 20th over but not without a bit of a scare being 7 wickets down at the end. Best of the Wanderers bowlers were Ryan Selkirk 3/23, Simon Quinn 2/23 and Brad Cox 2/10. Best of the OD Bowlers were Jared Pyke 3/12 which included the season’s first hat trick and Rhian Geraghty 2/24. Best of the OD batsmen were M. Travis 30 not out and Brayden McEvoy 12 runs. Wanderers received a 15 run penalty for being 15 minutes late starting due to only

Jack Orr played strongly last week for The Miners (pictured with the ball).

having six players available due to work and other commitments. Two Woomera locals filled in to ensure there was a game and a big thank you goes out to them. The second game between Woomera and Andamooka I believe was won convincingly by Woomera but due to no results being forwarded – I cannot give any scores or individual results. Saturday October 23, 2010 – saw Rogues take on Andamooka at Roxby Oval. Andamooka won the toss and elected to bowl. Adrian Boulton and Paul Trotta got Rogues off to a flying start with a 70 plus opening stand before Boulton and then Trotta went in quick concession. The next six wickets fell reasonably quickly before veteran Barry Dadleh and newcomer Grant Mulders rescued the side to reach the 200 mark. Rogues finished on 205 runs. Andamooka then went into bat with conditions quite good but in a short period of time that turned to cold and wet. Andamooka started extremely well with Ben Platcha playing really well for 42 before well caught by Barry Dadleh. The rain persisted until at the end of the 11th over the game was abandoned due to the conditions with Andamooka 3/72 off 11 overs. The other game played at Woomera on Saturday between Wanderers and Woomera unable to print results as details not provided. Next weeks fixtures are: Andamooka V Olympic Dam at 8.30am on the Roxby Oval. Woomera V Rogues at Woomera commencing at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Male to lead Hornridge Sporting Club

L

ast week’s annual general meeting of the Hornridge what it takes to get the job done.” Craig also made special mention of the Sporting Club reflected on a very successful year financially and a more professional approach to football club’s treasurer Lorraine McEvoy who established a new financial system for the club as and netball. In a well attended meeting of around 20 members, Darren Male was elected unopposed to the position of president, with Tony Rigden, Craig Hancock and Lorriane McEvoy elected unopposed to the positions of vice president, secretary and treasurer respectively. A keen number of people put up their hands for positions on the general committee as well as the social committee, again reflecting the success on and off the fields of sport. Outgoing president, Craig Hancock presented a comprehensive report of the year’s activities, saying season 2010 showed the club is continuing to grow and achieve. “Our netball teams provided some great successes with our B grade and C grade teams winning both their respective grand finals.” He said the club had one of its best development years and he congratulated everyone for being involved. “We once again had a great year with membership with 50 plus footballers, three netball teams, our committee and coaching staff and our wonderful regular and new social members,” said Craig. He paid tribute to the club’s social secretary Clint Gow-Smith saying the success of running the bar is a credit to him and his helpers. “We learned a lot during the year and found that we do have

well as being heavily involved with coaching, umpiring and was the netball club’s league representative. Hornridge Netballers featured highly in the netball league presentations with Zoey Male being voted the Best and Fairest for C grade and the Rising Star award while Elyshiah McCarthy won the rising star for A grade. Craig mentioned the efforts of Brad Cooper who was judged runner-up in the Mail Medal and provided good leadership on and off the field. “Three of our young players Mitch Blackie, Dylan Male and Bowdie Kelly also received recognition at a state level representing our region playing for the West Adelaide U17’s squad in Adelaide. They all played brilliantly and showed they could have what it takes to compete at this level.” Following the reports and the presentation of the balance sheet, it was decided to call a meeting of the committee as early as possible to begin planning another successful year of the Hornridge Sporting Club. Already there is talk of a player recruiting drive and several

fundraising functions that will involve all club members. One of the main concentrations again this year will be the ongoing development of Hornridge as a complete sporting club combing football, netball and basketball and they are now off and running. Netball Association needs new committee By Celeste Lustosa

The Roxby Downs Netball Association is holding and AGM on November 1st, at 7.30 pm at the Dune’s Café and everyone is invited to attend this important meeting that will define a new committee for the year ahead. Michelle Paull, current president of the Roxby Downs Netball Association, said they are hoping to get more members, players, sponsors and people in general involved with the association and form a new committee for the 2011 season. “We want to encourage people to attend this AGM; have their say and get on board to take one of the positions – all positions are open at the moment, being the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer which are very key roles,” she said. Michelle has been the president for the past five years, and believes it’s time for her to step aside and let new members bring new ideas to the Association. “I have been the president over the past five years and I am stepping aside because I need to have a rest. My son is playing junior football and I need to have some flexibility

now to support him in his sport. I am also on a different roster and I have some work commitments as well, so I figured it’s time for somebody else to take on that role, and input different ideas, something new. “I believe if we have a strong committee and strong people in these roles, everyone does a little bit, complement each other and make it an easier work for everyone. “This is an established Association in regards to its financial position. We have worked really hard over the past few years to build up the bank, and the association has a nice pocket of money to see them through for a few years, as long as they continue to monitor and budget and work towards bringing sponsors on board, they should be able to sustain themselves for years and years to come,” Michelle explained. The association has a junior body which has around four teams in each grade, sometimes five, totalising sixteen teams for juniors. The seniors have five teams in each grade, with 15 teams in total. Each team has a minimum of seven players but mostly teams will have around team players, so we are talking about an Association that has provided a good service to hundreds of people. “By getting involved, people will have their

say; they might have many good ideas, but if they are part of the committee their ideas may get implemented. “We need people that enjoy netball, that have a history in the sport as well, so we can continue improving and growing. It’s really important for these people to get on board because we need that experience and knowledge to share so that we improve our association and the way we run it. “Other than the committee, everyone can get involved with a team, we encourage parents’ involvement as well because they are paying for their children and we need their feedback on what they would like to see done. It’s about what the players, the members want from this association. “We need everyone to come along and get involved in whatever they can; there are options available and you get so much out of it,” she concluded. Big day for Roxby’s rising swimming stars By Millie Thomas

O

ne of our most successful independent sporting clubs, the Roxby Swim Club, is about to start its competitive swimming season, launching with the annual Swimming Carnival, this year held on Saturday, November 13. The rising stars of the Swim Club will get a chance to compete against other clubs on home turf, and show the community what all the hype is about. Club President, Tony McGauchie spoke to The Monitor last week about the upcoming event. “Basically it’s to give our competitive swimmers a chance to compete against other clubs,” said Mr McGauchie. “We used to have our carnival later in the year but we actually brought it to November so it makes it sort of an early event of the season. Probably four or five other clubs will come up. We normally get the Port Augusta, Port Pirie, and a couple of clubs from Adelaide and Whyalla so it should be good.” Who would have ever thought that water sport clubs would prove to be successful in the desert? The success of the club is a milestone achievement for the town, but Mr McGauchie explains that they are still at a disadvantage to other clubs. “Our season starts a bit later than the normal season, the normal season starts in about May, but ours is only a Summer season,” explained Mr McGauchie. “We’ve only been in the pool for a few weeks so not THE MONITOR – Your Community Newspaper

much training has been done. They (the swimmers) are training quite well at the moment and hopefully they’ll do well. “We started doing some land training earlier on in the year, so we started training probably in September. If we had the facilities where we could train all year we’d obviously probably do a bit better,” he said. The day doesn’t happen without hours of dedicated planning and hundreds of dollars of sponsorship. “Our carnival day will start at about 6am, we’ll set everything up and get everything organised and then away we go,” said Mr McGauchie. “We usually finish at about four or five o’clock in the afternoon, so it’s a big day of full-on swimming all day. “One of the local guys, Harry Harrison is our announcer and Yvette Mooney is involved as well, and they’ve been doing it for years so they can keep the crowd pleased between events. “For the majority of the swimmers that we’ve got in the club at the moment it will be their first carnival of the season so this is the kick off for the competition. A couple of our senior swimmers have actually gone away to Adelaide earlier in the competition and swum a couple of times. “We haven’t really finalised all of our sponsors yet, we’re actually out canvassing for sponsorship of events at the moment,” said Mr McGauchie. ven the petulant showers of rain on Saturday could not keep the enthusiastic participants of the inaugural Greyhounds Corporate Golf Day at bay, with 65 entrants challenging the 18 holes at the Roxby Downs Golf Club. With special visitors from Greyhound Australia, Chief Executive OďŹƒcer Robert Thomas, Chairman Mark Menthe and General Manager, Osman Bahemia, the day was a smashing success. Robert Thomas commented on the success and longevity of this new event. “The event was an overwhelming success,â€? said Mr Thomas. “Even a few showers didn’t deter the teams from enjoying themselves. “We had 65 entrants of stroke and Ambrose teams. After the round of golf the participants enjoyed a barbecue and drinks as well as the all important awards ceremony. “We also raised over $400 for Canteen (the Australian organisation for young people living with cancer) during the day through raes and the mobile drink service. “We were extremely pleased with our inaugural event and it’s motivated us to be back bigger and better next year,â€? said Mr Thomas. Greyhound Australia was BHPB’s sole carrier last year and have supported numerous community events over their years at Olympic Dam. “Greyhound has been part of the Roxby Downs community for nearly 3 years and have supported community events such as the Bullride, Race events and Arid Recovery events to name a few. We thought it was time to have our own annual event where we can give something back to our clients, suppliers and locals as well as raising money for charity. “There are plenty of people to thank. Firstly the generous eorts of all of the

Greyhound team here in Roxby Downs led by our Olympic Dam Manager, Elna Edwards. The drivers and admin sta were all involved and made the day special. The Roxby Downs Golf Club Committee and members who hosted the day and were very welcoming to all of us and of course our very generous sponsors who provided prizes (and teams) include Greyhound Australia, Broadspectrum, The Workpac group, TranspaciďŹ c, Roxby Hourglass Jewellers, Roxby Sports Power, Olympic Dam Precision Engineering, Northpoint Toyota, Chives Restaurant, Norwood Hotel, MPS Building & Electrical, BLH Group of Companies, Savcor, Zealous and Ron Gee Enterprises. “Next year is a certainty,â€? he said. We probably won’t change the format too much as it was quite successful but we may have some surprises in store.â€? Manager of the Greyhound Australia Olympic Dam branch, Elna Edwards was relieved at the success of the event. “This was my ďŹ rst try at holding a golf open!â€? she exclaimed. “I think it’s more to get involved with BHP as such and the rest of the CFIT companies to socialise and to get to know each other outside

of work. “The members of CFIT, BHP and the members of the Golf Club were invited. “We had a stroke and an Ambrose, which is unusual, normally they have a stroke or an Ambrose, and so we’ve combined the two. “There was actually, believe it or not, 59 winners. I wouldn’t say you’d call them all winners, but there are prizes for 59 people! she joked. “It’s a lot, but it’s because it’s the combination of stroke and Ambrose. I’m basically following the golf rules from the golf club as to who is supposed to get prizes. “The day was a success, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Everybody loves golf – that counts in our favour!

What’s happening at the Roxby Downs Cultural & Leisure Precinct

Allan Robinson and his Workpac team were the overall winners of last weekend’s Greyhound sponsored Ambrose Golf Day at the picuresque Roxby Downs course. Allan was joined by Annarien Robbertse, Elicia Geraghty and Marta Sokolowska (pictured above) to take the prize from the Mark Bradley led team of Des Black, Ryan Ratzmer and Rodney King. In the Stroke competition run in parallel to the Ambrose competition, Glen Mungur continued his good form to with 71 o the stick. In the gardes, Neville Petherick took out A grade with 71, Tom Bilney B grade ďŹ nished with 76 and Dave Pattendon was C grade winner with 102.
