Ms Culf won the Elders Community Individual Award for her roles in community programs such as The Big Warm Welcome and Strengthening Our Families, bringing her into contact with many new and existing residents in our town.

“It is an acknowledgement of the importance of providing support to the families in our community,” said Ms Culf. “There are lots of ways that I have contributed to this community over a number of years and I hope I have inspired others to get involved in our community too.”

friendship to new residents to assist them in settling into the area and establishing their own networks in the community. Her role at Roxby Health Services also allows her to provide assistance to families who need additional health services or support.

Ms Culf also makes time to support families with young children or those with additional needs, and manages the volunteer staff who assist in a social support capacity.

Malcolm Hewett and the Vincent Racing Team participate in Salt Lake Land Speed Racing, held at Lake Gairdner each year, and this year were awarded with the Viterra Sports Award.

The VRT is made up of Malcolm Hewett and a core group of four dedicated people; Al Fischer, Colin Kranz, Mark Hamilton and Will Lockwood; who have made the journey to Salt Lake.

Mr Hewett and the VRT initially ran a vintage 1950 street registered Vincent Rapide motorcycle in modified vintage gas, and modified partially streamlined vintage gas classes in 2000.

Working in a newspaper office

L

ast week I undertook my work placement at the local Roxby Downs community newspaper, The Monitor. I think working as a journalist would be an interesting career to pursue because journalists are always learning which allows them to progress in the workplace.

I worked closely with Millie Thomas and John Pick, but also Vanessa Switala, Jody Gow-Smith and AimeeLee Elson. They helped me learn so many new things when I was at The Monitor so I owe them a big thank you.

Reporters can work at

local, national and international newspapers although many other opportunities are available. Reporters can also work on radio and television which gives them the chance to travel all over the world.

Whilst at The Monitor I partook in many activities that involved different skills.

I found that communication, working with others and also working independently were the three main skills that I used. Throughout last week I learnt how to conduct an interview, take photos, edit them, prepare for publication, write stories and much more. I conducted two interviews myself and also went along to interviews that Millie carried out. This helped me learn the type of

questions a journalist should ask.

I am very interested in writing so my work experience at a newspaper office was very relevant to my future. I enjoyed the work I was given and liked the environment that I worked in.

The people at The Monitor were very welcoming and nice which is also a positive aspect.

I think it was really fun getting the chance to interview people and then write a story about it. I had the chance to experience that and many other skills whilst working at The Monitor. I am still unsure of what I want to do later in life, but working in a newspaper office is a career I will seriously consider.

CEG ramping up for mine expansion L

ocal apprentice and trainee employer Career Employment Group is feeling the roll on effect from recent government mine expansion approval.

CEG Roxby Downs Branch Manager Darren Lowe said rates of apprenticeship applications and similarly vacant apprenticeship positions in Olympic Dam have increased for the 2012 intake.

“With the workload that’s out there currently and the potential amount of work that needs to be done in the future, there is a huge potential for an increase in apprenticeship numbers and we’re gearing up to support that,” said Mr Lowe.

He said the structure of their current program is able to be scaled up in the occurrence that demand for apprentices and trainees jumps quickly.

“Everything we’re doing now is with the view of the potential expansion everything we have put in place can be scalable,” he said.

“If all of a sudden we’re asked to double our numbers, we just need to virtually double our staff. All the things we’re doing are in preparing for that.”

CEG are also expanding their program to be able to accommodate and foster all – whether they are the typecast for the industry

or not. “We’ve got indigenous apprentices that have come through as trainees…they’ve proved themselves as that and they’ve rolled on as apprentices.

“And we’ve got a female apprentice electrician who’s going really well. All the things we’re doing is all about supporting and making a program that’s robust enough to support everybody.

“We’re an equal opportunity employer and our program needs to support that – and it’s been quite successful.”

CEG have also altered their approach in school aged children, by working with the local school in an industry specific type career counselling.

CEG representatives speak to senior school students about core competencies needed not only to land an apprenticeship, but any career.

They have been working with the children through aptitude tests and mock interviews, amongst others.

“There’s been a lot of support from local companies to develop young people, it just makes so much more sense,” said Mr Lowe. “We’re in a remote area and we encourage local employment. It makes retention a lot easier, and it’s good for our local community, so we fully support that and that’s what we’re working towards.”

Mr Lowe explained that the pro-

gram helps show students the relevance of their subject later in life.

It also shows them how to achieve goals through secondary, tertiary and trade education.

He also said there is a focus on extra curricula activities such as community involvement, sports and part time jobs.

“We’re supporting the young people by giving them a goal, and we’re supporting the local teachers in saying, what your teacher’s saying is correct, and we do value it, and you will go far, and we will look for that in CVs,” said Mr Lowe.

In this sense, CEG acts as the ‘industry voice’, by sourcing what employers want and need, and communicating it back to the students.

In CEG’s 16 year local history, “completion rates have been extremely high and those tradesmen often fall into permanent positions… we make sure they’re confident in their own ability,” said Mr Lowe. He also thanked all Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs based contractors for hosting apprentices, as ‘without all this, this wouldn’t be possible.’ “…Our goal is to ensure they get through their apprenticeship complete and competent, confident young people.

“We revel in building safer pathways to apprenticeship excellence,” he finished.

Celebrate Melbourne Cup at the only TAB operator in town!

By Millie Thomas Join the Roxby Downs Tavern staff this Tuesday for their annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon.

Each year, Tavern staff entertain Roxby locals by holding a three course meal in the café, complete with a sweepstakes and betting stall.

This year’s spectacular luncheon will be compiled by RD Jones Group Executive Head Chef, Peter Swiderski direct from Adelaide, and the Tavern’s head chef, Aaron Yang.

Clientele will be treated to a choice of creamy mushroom soup with garlic croutons or salt and pepper squid served on a coriander infused garden salad for entrée. For main course a choice between grilled chicken breast with spinach mash and bacon cream sauce, a sirloin steak with garlic potato, sautéed vegetables and red wine jus or Atlantic salmon with prawn risotto and basil oil.

For desert, there will be a choice of an indulgent ‘Mille Feuille’ – puff pastry layered with choco-

late cream or fruit salad served in a brandy snap basket and ice cream.

Women and men alike are encouraged to dress in their ‘Race Day Best’, complete with fascinators and glitterati galore, with prizes awarded to the best dressed and best hat.

Tavern Manager Matt Dawe and his staff are working around the clock to pull together a great day of frivolous financing and frolicsome frocks for this great Aussie event.

Tickets are $35 a head and patrons will be seated at a table of ten – of their choice or sporadically. Meal service times will be as usual – from 12pm to 2pm.

While working as Youth and Social Services Coordinator for Roxby Council, Mr Hough studied vigorously to complete his Social Work and Social Planning degree through Flinders University.

Resources and qualified supervisors were difficult to access due to the remote location of Roxby, and Flinders had to fly a representative up on a regular basis to help Mr Hough achieve the best results in his study.

In December 2010, Mr Hough became the first Hough family member to complete degree level education.

In early 2011 he became an educational supervisor, and Noarlunga TAFE SA student Caitlin McKinnon, completed her Community Studies placement alongside Mr Hough at Roxby Leisure.

As a leader in the young community, Mr Hough’s philosophy for engaging the youth; was to offer support, counselling and guidance, along with events and activities in a drop-in environment that they feel at home with; continued strongly throughout this year.

Advantage SA CEO, Karen Raffen, congratulated all winners from the region on their success. “Advantage SA is thrilled to recognise so many exceptional members of the Far North community for their outstanding achievements,” Ms Raffen said.

After 10 years of participating in the Salt Lake Land Speed race, the team had set the Australian record for its class twice, most recently at 243 kilometres per hour in 2009. That year they also surpassed their original goal of 240 kilometres per hour.

The team has achieved four World Land Speed Records recognised on the world stage to add to their two Australian records and have commanded attention to Australia at both race meetings.

The whole project has been financed by the team through various fundraising avenues, and all work done on the bike has been completed

by Malcolm, in his backyard shed in Roxby.

Mr Hewett, upon waking from nightshift last Thursday, was notified by The Monitor of his win. “I feel very proud and very thankful for the recognition,” said Mr Hewett.

“I feel very blown away by it. It sort of recognises our hard work, because it has been hard work over the years. Just very proud and very happy to have won!

“It shows that people in small towns, outback towns can succeed! We’ve had so much help locally from so many people; we just couldn’t have done it without them.

“It’s hard work but having success drives you.

Fossils Rock at Parachilna this weekend

T

his weekend the ancient Ediacara landscape near Parachilna will come to life in a newer form of rock as living legend Leo Sayer rolls into town.

Come 20th century fossils, one and all, to rock on at “Fossil’s Rock with Leo Sayer” in the Parachilna town square this Saturday.

The event is guaranteed to be spectacular. Held in the town square, the on stage stars won’t be the only ones to shine – Parachilna is recognised as one of the best places in the world to view the night skies.

Part proceeds of the event will

be donated to the Parachilna Town Square Project – an interpretive space of the first life on earth, encrypted in the spectacular fossils of the nearby heritage listed site.

The fossils found in the region represent the Ediacaran Period – a time between 570-540 million years ago – long before dinosaurs roamed the earth. It was a period when most of inland Australia was covered in a warm, shallow sea.

Geologist Reg Sprigg uncovered fossils from the era at the old Ediacara Minefield in 1946. These fossils included a whole community of soft-bodied organisms and are believed to be the first multi-celled animal life forms on the planet.

The region was recently recognised in an award-winning David Attenborough series on ancient life.

“The Ediacara fossils of the Flinders Ranges are of huge international importance for they give us a glimpse of the very first forms of life on earth,” Mr Attenborough said.

“That these delicate traces should have survived for over five hundred and fifty million years is in itself extraordinary. But the scientists who study them have been able to deduce in amazing detail how these creatures moved, fed and behaved.

“So it is thrilling news that there

is to be an interpretation facility at Parachilna, so that visitors may fully understand the meaning of these great discoveries.”

Fossils Rock will begin at 4pm, and Sayer will be backed by 2011 Telstra Road to Tamworth Winner Harry Hookey and local singers & songwriters John O’Dea and Jasmine Reschke.

egional Development Australia (RDA) visited Roxby Downs on Thursday, 13 October to visit BHP Billiton at Olympic Dam and discuss the expansion with Town Administrator, Bill Boehm.

All business advisors of (RDA) came together for the Quarterly Business Advisors Conference with RDA Far North hosting the event.

RDA business advisers help set up and grow businesses, assisting with market research, operational issues and financial matters. Each

RDA office also arranges workshops, training programs and events for local businesses.

Dean Liebelt, Business Advisor of Regional Development Australia Far North and organiser of the conference believes that Roxby Downs is a great place to be at the moment with the approval of the expansion.

“We are showcasing and looking at Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam and the expansion and how that will impact business and the community,” he said.

Adelaide Resources last week announced the commencement of drilling operations on the Corrobinnie Uranium Joint Venture.

The Corrobinnie Uranium Joint Venture, between the Company and Quasar Resources Pty Ltd, is searching for uranium deposits on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. The current drilling program will utilise aircore drilling methods to test a number of priority target areas in the Thurlga and Narlaby Palaeochannels, including follow-up drilling at targets identified by previous Joint Venture drilling programs.

Approximately 12,000 metres of drilling is planned. Gamma probe logging of the holes will be carried out using a portable slim-line logging system, while assay samples will also be collected for multi-element geochemical analysis. Results from the drilling program are anticipated to become available over the next two months.

A number of relatively close spaced drill traverses are planned to follow-up highly anomalous uranium intersected in 2009 and 2010 drilling programs in the Thurlga Palaeochannel.

BHP Billiton Safety Month

ergeant Bob Elliot from the Traffic and Training Promotion Section of the South Australian Police (SAPOL) has recently been in Roxby Downs after BHP Billiton invited him to provide road safety talks with their employees as part of their Safety Month.

Mr Elliott provides road safety presentations to schools and businesses throughout the state and provided a presentation for the Roxby community on Thursday, October 13 in the Outback Theatre.

BHP Billiton Olympic Dam’s Safety Month is now well underway with various presentations and workshops being held on site at Olympic Dam and in Roxby Downs to provide an extra focus on health and safety throughout October.

He is trying to get the message out to the community not to be involved in a crash rather than what happens if you are involved in a crash.

Mr Elliott stressed that the choices and risks drivers make can lead not only to fines but to injuries and deaths.

The presentations also include crash statistics on South Australian roads with the 16-24 year old age group making up 25-30 per cent of deaths.

Surprisingly, this year the 16-24 year old age group represents less than 10 per cent of deaths on South Australian roads, claiming six out of 85 deaths.

The worst age group for deaths on our roads this year has been the 31-40 year olds with majority of deaths due to not wearing a seatbelt and drug or drunk driving.

The Traffic Training and Protection Section works in conjunction with the Motor Accident Commission to reduce deaths and injuries on roads.

Mr Elliott said, “The Motor Accident Commission pays hundreds of millions of dollars per year due to deaths and injuries.”

He said that the main causes of accidents in country areas are fatigue, drug and alcohol driving.

Mr Elliott said that drivers should rest every two hours for at least ten minutes and share the driving when travelling long distances.

He also stressed the importance of only consuming two standard drinks in the first hour and one every hour after that for males and women should only consume one standard drink per hour if going to drive.

Mr Elliott would like the public to remember standard drinks are only up to 100 millilitres, no more.

He said the ultimate message is to reduce the road toll.

Mr Elliott would like to remind the Roxby Downs community that it is an offence to use fog lights unless it is adverse conditions or foggy. He had noticed drivers using them when they should not.

“There’s no doubt that safety is important to all of us at Olympic Dam every single day of the year, but Safety Month is a chance to put a little extra focus on the topic and bring some extra attention both onsite and in the local community” said Stefan Buys, Olympic Dam Asset President.

Others must now show leadership

M

uch has been written and said about Mike Rann in the past weeks leading to his departure after a long and illustrious career in politics and as leader of the Labor Party in SA. Like him or not, Mike Rann will go down in history as the man who unlocked the full potential of South Australia’s mining wealth and the man who changed his mind to open the door to uranium mining in the state.

In his parting gift to the State, Mr Rann has signed the indenture that will allow the expansion of Olympic Dam mine and it will be a very brave move by the Opposition to block its passage through parliament.

Although Isobel Redmond dislikes Mike Rann with a passion it would be tantamount to political suicide for her and her party to stand in the way of the expansion, and with it, the blocking of further investment in this State by any mining company or developer in the future.

The Greens with just two votes in the Legislative Council are defiant in their opposition to the expansion, the desal plant and mining in general.

Thankfully they don’t carry much weight in this argument.

Not every aspect of the OD expansion is going to please everyone and some in the Opposition ranks are calling for a

royalty fund to further develop regional areas hosting mining, but then shoot themselves in the foot by insisting BHP Billiton invest in universities, sponsorship of the arts, charities and sporting bodies.

They should know BHP Billiton is already a very benevolent corporation. We in Roxby know better than most how it supports charities of all description matching dollar for dollar, how it was one of the first to gift $500,000 to the disaster in Somalia, how it supports the education of children of its workers and how it participates in national social programs in addition to local community activities to name just some of its philanthropic gestures.

Perhaps the Opposition should have done more homework before casting demands on BHP in a feeble attempt to put a stumbling block on the passing of the indenture.

Unless there is co-operation among the Labor and Liberal ranks with this future defining investment for South Australia, the Greens will claim victory and the expansion could be in jeopardy.

Mike Rann’s departure from politics may be welcomed in some quarters but it is well to remember he has delivered on his promise to sign off on the expansion to the State, now it’s up to others to show leadership and follow it through.

Burn incident at OD

A

local contractor was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital last week after an incident occurred on the Olympic Dam mine site.

Safework SA has been informed that the contractor went up in flames after being in contact with a highly flammable liquid. He ignited during a cigarette break sometime later.

They were also informed that the incident happened at about 5.40pm on Tuesday, October 18 in a designated smoking area near the Tails Disposals Area.

“We have been told that the injured man received First Aid at the scene, and was taken to the Roxby Downs Medical Centre before being transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital,” stated a SafeWork SA spokesperson.

“SafeWork SA has been in contact with mine officials to

ascertain further details on the incident including the review of relevant safety policy, procedures and practices for the work activities being undertaken prior to the smoke break.

“A SafeWork SA Mining Inspector will attend the site following assessment of this information.”

A BHP Billiton spokesperson confirmed that a contract employee had sustained serious burns to his body.

oxby Downs Area School held their Year four, five and six ‘Tribal Camp’ on Thursday, October 20.

Students participated in tribal activities during the day at the town and school ovals then returned to school to continue camp activities.

On Friday the students travelled on the school bus to the Roxby Downs Racecourse for further activity fun.

Students were encouraged to wear casual clothes in their tribal colours.

Dog owners need space

ith 750 registered dogs in Roxby Downs some residents are feeling the need for a dog park.

Monte Clements has been a resident of Roxby Downs for seven years but only purchased a Kelpie named Inu one year ago.

She has found it difficult to exercise Inu and her partner’s American Staff y, Sage, on a daily basis due to limited space for dogs to run freely.

Ms Clements said walking the dogs on a lead does not allow them to burn enough energy and there are usually sporting events which take place on the town oval most nights of the week.

“The backyard looks more and more like a bomb site,” she exclaimed.

“I’m well aware I got a hyperactive batterycharged working dog - but there was a method to my madness,” she added.

Ms Clements stressed the main issue is if she takes the dogs to the school oval she is constantly pulling the dogs off kids that are at the skate park or apologising to mothers as they protect their young children from her excited dogs.

“The issue isn’t that my dogs are untrained or dangerous- it’s just that they have no where to run without me pulling them off people that don’t want to deal with a dog,” she said.

“And, there is no guarantee that I’ll be able to let the dog off the lead for a good run at the oval or school grounds.

“Plus, I feel interaction with other dogs is important. It lets your dog have a social life, but is hard to do as there is no where in Roxby that is fenced and has running room for a group of dogs to play without you thinking about traffic or people,” she added.

Ms Clements strongly believes Roxby Downs would benefit from a dog park because, “Not everyone out enjoying the public space wants to be licked by your friendly harmless dog.”

“If the community want to prevent dog attacks and aggressive behaviour, it makes sense to have a space available for owners and dogs alike to go to encourage socially friendly pets and that get adequate physical and mental exercise,” she said.

In the South Australian Assessment Report for the expansion of Olympic Dam numerous parks and ovals have been proposed.

south-east of Roxby, a new park and skate park to the rear of the swimming pool and two new ovals are in the plans but, there is no mention of a dog park in the proposal.

Ms Clements has recently been busy discussing the issue with the Council and Vivienne Holloway, Business and Marketing Consultant for Roxby Council.

One idea that has been raised was to allocate certain time slots as ‘dog friendly’ times where dogs can run leash free on the town oval.

This would allow the community to know that there would be dogs present and also guarantee dog owners that there would not be sporting events on at those times.

But, Peter Keller, Municipal Works Officer at the Roxby Downs Council said that ‘dog friendly’ times on the oval would be impossible to enforce.

“The reason is the ovals are sports ovals, they are booked at the drop of a hat. The school gets priority,” he said.

He also stated the small oval is for the schools use and the larger oval is constantly booked out and set ‘dog friendly’ times would not work.

He said, “The way it’s worked here in the past, and I’ve been here six years and I’ve taken my dogs for walks down there (the oval) lots of times, its just a common sense thing that people have got by with. So people just respect each other, respect the school, respect the fact that if there’s football there well you can’t take your dog on there.“ Mr Keller stated the public can let their dogs off the leash on walking trails through the sand hills as long as they can verbally control the dog.

“On the streets you must have your dog on a two metre lead but if you walk your dog through those walks or let your dog go, you have got to be aware that if your dog can’t be controlled and it does cause trouble and it does happen to bite and fight with another dog, you could finish up losing your dog including big fines and even destruction orders.”

Carolyn from Andamooka holds a free community dog training session on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm at the Lion’s Park when she is not working night shift.

Mr Keller said, “We’re pretty accommodating, I suppose, because she does it around Lion’s Park and really the dog rules say that she is not supposed to be within a certain amount of metres of a public place like Lion’s Park but we allow her to

do it because we’re just squeezed for space.”

He previously told The Monitor, “Some councils have designated areas and parks where you can let your dog off the leash; we don’t designate the ovals, but unofficially we would allow owners to run their dogs there off of the leash.”

Mr Keller said a dog park has been proposed to the Council previously and has been on the Council’s agenda since he began with them six years ago.

In the Animal Management Plan which Mr Keller created four years ago, it is identified and highly recommended by dog and cat management that Roxby has a dog park.

“I put in there that we would try to get a dog park when the expansion went ahead because four years ago there was a full town plan with the expansion. The EIS Environment Impact Statement has the proposed town plan. You would be amazed what was in that. There was supposed to be a nice big park down where the cemetery is,” he said.

Mr Keller was hoping this could have been the site for a dog park but he said it would be at least five or ten years away.

He also said the Council support the proposal for a dog park but they have not received much

“It would be great if someone could come up with a solution for the Council.”

“Basically, I don’t have a solution. I have a problem without a solution.

“I feel a bit frustrated not being able to offer some kind of park for dogs. Even if we could come up with a patch of sand somewhere,” Mr Keller concluded.

The Adopted Animal Management Plan on the Roxby Council website was created in August 2007 and states, “There has been ongoing use of the Roxby Downs Main Oval and School Oval for off leash exercising of dogs and is used in an unofficial capacity where the dog owners respect the use of the oval by sporting bodies and the school and only use the oval when not in use. This needs to be addressed as soon as practical.”

The proposal for the issue of providing welfare for dogs stated, “That once the Township Master Plan is made available that Council formally identifies such areas that will be suitable for off leash areas for exercising dogs also to identify areas not suitable as off leash areas.”

Four years later there still seems to be no solution.

alloween - the infamous holiday has in the past been used to celebrate ghosts, ghouls and all things sinister from the world of the dead.

‘Trick or treating’ is tradition for children particularly in the USA but has crept into Austraila in recent years. Kids dressed as anything from ‘jack-o-lanterns’ to ‘wicked witches of the west’, hit the streets searching for sweets from willing neighbours.

But how can parents be sure that the doors their children are knocking on open to safe and friendly families or perhaps disturbing someone who is on shift work and catching up on sleep?

An observant Monitor reader called our office a couple of weeks ago with a great idea to help put those worrying parents’ minds at ease.

ON THE VERGE? From time to time people get confused about road verges, and in particular what one is? A road verge is the space between the property’s front boundary and the back of the kerbing.

It is not particularly thoughtful to park on the verge as it means pedestrians have to enter the roadway, and oncoming traffic, to navigate past your vehicle– this includes children on bikes and mums with pushers etc. Plant life can be damaged and compacted soil will not sustain healthy street trees and shady streetscapes into the future. Another risk by parking on the verge is driving into and damaging the green pillars that are situated on your property and contain live electrical wires – so, please do not park on a verge, you may endanger someone close to you.

LOST DOGS and CATS – after hours It’s very distressing to find out your pet has disappeared from home - and some pets are really good escape artists! We heard recently of a family’s traumatic day spent searching the entire town of Roxby Downs for their dog who had been picked up by a well meaning resident many hours prior. The quickest way to re-unite pets and their owners anytime after business hours is to contact the Council on their emergency number - 0418 892 870. An officer on call can then come and collect the animal and start the process of returning it to its owner.

Their family may be frantic with worry and it is less stressful on the animal to be returned quickly.

The emergency after hours contact number operates after business hours every day and this is the number to use if you find a dog or cat too!

WATER ACCOUNTS September 2011 quarterly water accounts have been issued and are due for payment by the 15th of November 2011. Direct debit and auto-payment options are available for all water accounts, please contact the Council for further information.

• The power is off and I can’t heat up my baby’s bottle! (Luckily our officer was an experienced mum and suggested the caller boil a saucepan of water on her gas stove).

Naturally this is a tongue in cheek article and we stress that our staff are here to assist the community and are happy to do so. It’s just that sometimes we are not able to solve the problems that are raised.

Road safety in bushfires GIVE AWAY A Roxby Roadsafe message to help protect you and your family...

Cars are a very dangerous place to be during a bushfire, as they offer very little protection from radiant heat, and driving conditions are often difficult and stressful.

If you are aware of bushfires before you leave home, plan an alternative route and do not travel to the affected area. If you come across smoke while travelling, turn around and go back. Listen to the radio and ask locally for help to find a safe way through.

Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained for the journey you are undertaking. Keep several woollen blankets and a supply of fresh drinking water in your vehicle in case you are caught in a bushfire.

Research shows that sheltering inside a vehicle is a high risk strategy and it is highly unlikely that a person will survive in all but the mildest circumstances. The only way to survive a bushfire is to be nowhere near the threat.

Please keep you and your family safe from the trauma of bushfires by following these suggestions when travelling in bushfire season.

ndamooka Primary School have an Active After School program which is funded by the Federal Government. Students take part in one hour of fitness after school, three nights a week.

The Active After School Program hopes to make the most of the renovated pool which is opening this week.

The pool has been re-painted and has new shade sails which have been replaced by the Department of Education.

Angela Turner, Principal of Andamooka Primary School is looking forward to the opening of the pool for the children.

“It is just in time for summer because the kids here they need it because there is not

much else for them to do,” she said.

“Unfortunately, opening the pool has always been hard for us because unless it’s a school event, there has to be a lifesaver and another volunteer with them,” she added.

Getting trained as a lifesaver is a vigorous and complex one week course.

APOMA (Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association) has recently applied to the Outback Areas Trust to obtain funding for a lifeguard because they are expensive to have.

“The trouble is you rely on volunteers and I think we have only got two or at the most, three volunteers in town who are lifeguards.

So the pool can only be opened when they are able to (volunteer),” Ms Turner said.

“Hopefully this funding will come through and we will be able to use it for lifeguards to get the pool open.”

Ms Turner said people go into the pool after dark which is trespassing and may not be safe.

“It’s not safe for the kids to do that. But you can understand on a really hot day, when they are looking at the water, they just want to jump in. It’s not safe for them to do that without a lifeguard,” she said.

“It’s hard not to feel jealous in a way. There are two pools over there (Roxby Downs).

Another one just opened. As a town we just don’t have a council and we don’t have the resources to do that. And the kids, well they’re kids. They can’t go to Roxby unless their parents take them and sit at the pool with them,” she added.

The Active After School program hopes to make the most of the pool using it a few times a week in a supervised environment.

Andamooka embraces ‘Sports for Schools’ program

ndamooka Primary School is amongst the record number of South Australian schools to be involved in the Coles ‘Sports for Schools’ program this year.

The school will share, with many others, thousands of dollars worth of free sporting equipment for their students.

Local teachers, students and parents have been busy collecting last minute vouchers by October 18 to maximise the amount of new, free equipment they receive.

Vouchers are received for every ten dollars spent in Coles Supermarkets or Coles Online. Many of the student’s grandparents and relatives have been sending coupons to the children from Port Augusta and Adelaide.

Donations of coupons have even been made from maintenance people to Andamooka Primary.

Ms Angela Turner, Principal of Andamooka Primary School said last year the school received 12 basketballs from the ‘Sports for Schools’ program.

She said that most of those basketballs have now been lost so the timing is great to replace them.

A record 588 South Australian schools have been involved in the ‘Sports for Schools’ program this year since the launch in July.

Cole’s South Australian General Manager, Vito Borrello said, “We’re thrilled to see such an enthusiastic response to the 2011 ‘Sports for Schools’ program in SA. Last year set the bar high for registrations, so to have topped that by signing 588 schools so far is an incredible achievement.”

The program encourages customers to collect vouchers when they shop at Coles which their local school can exchange for free sports equipment.

‘Sports for Schools’ is the largest program of its kind in Australia providing over $7,000,000 of sports gear to more than 7,600 schools across Australia last year.

There are 850 new sports lines for schools to choose from including leading sports brands Sherrin, Speedo, Adidas and Wilson.

The program is partnering exclusively with

the AFL sponsor a nationwide network of school football ambassadors to promote the game and develop skills grassroots level.

Additionally, Coles is the official supermarket of the Australian Olympic team at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Coles Managing Director, Ian McLeod said, “By providing much needed sports equipment and through our partnerships with the AFL and the Australian Olympic team, Coles ‘Sports for Schools’ will help ensure that our young people have the opportunity to play sport for fun, to keep active and for those that can, to go on to greater sporting achievements.”

Sports for Schools ambassador and Olympic champion, Cathy Freeman said, “I’m lucky enough to have been able to develop my passion for sport but not all Australian kids get the same opportunity. Coles ‘Sports for Schools’ has already made a real difference to millions of kids across the country and now we all have the opportunity to do it again. Please get behind the program and lets give every Australian child the chance to enjoy sport.”

New primary students at Andamooka

From November 15 until 18, teachers along with 15 students from the year six/seven class will travel to Adelaide to receive the $1,000 prize from new Premier, Jay Weatherill.

Angela Turner, Principal of Andamooka Primary School said the students are all really excited. The prize money will be spent on accommodation for the students when they travel to Adelaide.

She said the students will also go to the Adelaide Museum and make the most of the trip.

The younger children at Andamooka Primary will have a Dinosaur Pool Party to celebrate.

Bryce Ingham, year six/seven teacher, organised the Be Active program at Andamooka Primary where students complete laps of an obstacle course then measure on a map of Adelaide to Melbourne how far they have travelled.

Students contribute to their ability completing as many laps of the obstacle course as they can; one lap of the circuit is equal to 500 metres.

Every time children pass the start they receive a dot on their hand, signifying the 500 metres they have travelled.

“Each week their goal is to beat their own score and try to get fitter,” said Mr Ingham. Students compete against themselves to complete more laps and build their fitness levels.

During their first week of the program the students clocked 22.5 kilometres. In the second week students collectively travelled 21.5 kilometres and 23 kilometres in the third week.

The students then measure on a map how far they have travelled using the key and mark their progress from Adelaide to Melbourne.

When the students pass through a town Mr Ingham shows them the street level view on Google Maps so they can visualise what the town looks like.

“So they feel they are running through it,” Mr Ingham said.

The students, so far, are almost at Ararat.

Through this project the students also learn map reading skills and maths as they graph the laps they complete each week.

“The aim is to see the graph go in the upwards direction,” Mr Ingham said in the hope the students are becoming fitter.

Although the project is long, Mr Ingham is certain the students are still motivated. He said when they document how far they are progressing on the map it re-engages them.

Students will also be involved in a ‘Come and Try’ Day held by Be Active where the children can play with others from schools around the state.

Each year students receive a certificate or medal for their efforts depending on how many years they have been completing the program.

Ms Turner said, “We lose a lot of balls but at least the kids are being active!”

All schools participate in the Be Active program and the program aims to send a message established by the South Australian Government to get South Australians more active, more often.

here seems to have been some confusion lately regarding the role of the Community Board and the Community Foundation. They both foster and promote community’s development but in different ways.

The following is an effort to enlighten the community, inspire discussion and enthusiasm and promote the important role each plays within our community.

THE COMMUNITY BOARD

T

h e C o m mu n i t y Board was established in 2005 and became an incorporated non profit association in late 2006. The Board was established in response to a recommendation from the Roxby Downs Community Plan (2005).

The Community Plan reflects the aspirations of the community and in particular that Roxby Downs is recognised as a; Healthy town,

forums and partnerships) that focus on particular sectors of the community.

These subcommittees organise events, activities, and projects and members are all volunteers. The Board and the forums are our collective link to governments, businesses and community and they seek opportunities for community development projects that enhance the quality of life in Roxby Downs.

A Community Board member sits on each forum or partnership creating a two way communication link with the Community Board. Current forums or partnerships include: Health, Education and Workplace Training, Community Garden, Arts and Culture, Sport and Recreation, Environment and the Women’s Network.

The Community Board is the peak community body in Roxby Downs and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Community Plan. It also has a lobbying function and advocates on behalf of residents.

Big Sky has established Community Foundations in Hedland (WA) and Moranbah (QLD) as well as in Roxby Downs. Each Community Foundation operates with a board of around seven people with representatives from Big Sky, the local council and the local community. The Directors of the Foundation are volunteers and were appointed because of their expertise in financial management, governance and community development.

Big Sky makes an annual donation to the Roxby Downs Community Foundation from the after tax profits of the Roxby Downs Service Centre . The aim is to en-

welcoming town, learning community, model environmentally friendly town, family oriented town and a place for personal development.

• health and welfare (all ages) • community infrastructure • sports programs and information Grant applications are thoroughly assessed to ensure that they meet broader social and community development goals. Grant application forms are available from the Big Sky Credit Union Service Centre in Tutop Street. All businesses that donate are included in promotional materials.

Swim and survive this summer!

By Millie Thomas Roxby Leisure is offering budding swimmers of Roxby Downs the chance to participate in the Royal Life Saving Society ‘Swim and Survive’ program.

Swim and Survive is a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Life Saving seeking to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all Australian children in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

Roxby Leisure Operations Manager Michael Esposito said after an extensive search, they have found a competent swimming instructor to lead the lessons.

After originally planning on starting swim lessons on October 17 this year, Roxby Leisure had to stall the program for lack of teachers. “I’d like to thank the parents and the families of the children who are wanting to participate in the swim school,” said Mr Esposito. “It has been challenging for us to find a qualified swim instructor, but the good news is we have found someone, Sue Grimm.”

Mrs Grimm is a local instructor who, a number of years ago, filled this same role at Roxby Leisure. She has worked as a swim instructor at various other aquatic precincts, since qualifying to teach in 1983.

She will teach all levels of swimming, from children as young as six months of age, right up to level seven of the ‘Swim and Survive’ program.

The six week swim school will start under Mrs Grimm’s instruction on Monday October 31, running through to Friday, December 9.

Lessons will be held at the Roxby Leisure pool on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays for the six

week program. “It is a six week program given that the school term is short and we’re starting three weeks in (to the school term),” said Mr Esposito.

“We’ve got limited spots available, so we will be contacting everyone who has come in and put their names on our expressions of interest page.

“Your instructor will put you in the level they think you will be most challenged in.”

Mr Esposito explained that as ‘Swim and Survive’ is a newly adopted program by Roxby Leisure, the challenge will be placing each student into their appropriate class.

However, if students have previously participated in the program elsewhere, they can simply pick up where they left off.

‘Swim and Survive’ will resume from the beginning of term one 2012, but in the meantime, Roxby Leisure is planning on holding swim lessons over the Christmas break.

The Royal Life Saving Society is also visiting Roxby Leisure from December 11 – 13 to offer Aus-Swim accredited swim instructor training. “Swim instructing is a very rewarding job,” said Mr Esposito, “but you need to have a passion for teaching aquatic education.”

Swim club embraces new season, new members, new sponsor

edicated competitive team, the Roxby Downs Swim Club opened their season last week with a come n’ try day.

The day welcomed new swimmers and new families as the club starts to rebuild after losing a number of senior swimmers.

Club President Tony McGauchie said some of the older children had moved away to boarding school or taken up part time jobs amongst other things, which prevented them from committing as much time to swimming.

“Now we’ve probably got a much younger squad than what we’ve had over the previous years but it’s really good, it still means the strength in

the club is through its younger swimmers and now they’re actually starting to come through as our senior swimmers,” he said.

During the off season, the Swim Club had been campaigning at local market days, trying to spark interest into new members, which Mr McGauchie said had been successful.

Regardless of some major changes to the swimming line up, he said the

mandate of the club remained the same. “It’s still a competitive swim club… all the coaches and the committee are committed to is basically operating a competitive swim club.

“We’ll train as a competitive swim club and when we go away we’ll compete as a team of competitive swimmers…it’s still business as usual and it’s about competition, the kids being fit and racing and swimming to the

best of their ability!”

Finally, local apprentice and trainee employers Career Employment Group have joined the foray in being the club’s major sponsor for the 2011/ 2012 season.

“That goes a long way to actually helping us run the club professionally as well,” said Mr McGauchie.

The club’s first competition will be at Crystal Brook in December.

Friday night saw a good crowd for the Twenty20 match between Olympic Dam Cricket Club and Hornridge Wanderers at the Roxby Downs Oval.

With ominous weather looming it was going to be a bit hit or miss whether the game was going to be able to go the distance, luckily the weather held off and Olympic Dam batted first but got

away to a slow start.

A solid partnership between Craig Nichols and Brad Rynne stabilised Olympic Dam’s innings - some late big hitting and luck saw OD post 122 after their 20 overs. After the break, Wanderers came out to bat being in the box seat, began their innings reasonably well but then lost a few wickets in quick succession.

OD too good for Andamooka The 40-Over format of the game blessed the Roxby Downs Oval in almost perfect conditions for playing cricket between the Olympic Dam Cricket Club and the Andamooka Cricket Club.

Again Olympic Dam batted first which saw Nigel Shinick in a rare cameo appearance for OD again opening the batting with Scott Peek. These two got OD off to a flyer with 120 odd runs being scored before Shinick was dismissed by a fine catch for a quick fire 79.

Numerous partnerships continued ticking the scoreboard over and when new recruit Ryan Bennett came to the crease saw some big hits and fast scoring to push the score to over 200. When Bennett was dismissed for 54 it brought the tail enders which saw a steady loss of wickets including a well deserved hat trick by Chris Osbourne (6/38) off the last over of the game - OD was all out with one ball to go for 234, with T. Mulders taking the other four wickets for 30 runs.

A mid-innings partnership between Craig Wilson and Ryan Selkirk pushed Wanderers closer to OD’s total. Unfortunately for Wanderers, Selkirk was dismissed by a blinder of a catch at first slip and a steady progression of wickets saw a halt to the run rate.

In the end, Wanderers fell short of the total, posting 106 off their 20 overs.

After the intermission, Andamooka with a run rate of 5.85 to chase down had to get off to a good start. But this unfortunately for Andamooka supporters was not to be the case, some exceptional fast bowling from Nigel Shinick (4 for 6) and Adrian “Whistle” Harris saw Andamooka in a world of trouble at one stage being 3/5.

Olympic Dam’s bowling and fielding proved the difference with the only resistance from Andamooka being a partnership between J. Gareth (26) and T. Mulders (28). Once that stand was broken, saw a steady loss of wickets which resulted in Andamooka finishing up all out for 84.
