Sensational! By Vanessa Switala he inaugural Roxby Downs Multicultural Food, Music and Art Festival was held on Saturday with over 1,200 people attending the successful event.

T

Best Dressed individual was awarded to Ratidzo Chabayanzara.

The main event was held on Richardson Place from 3pm until 10pm and offered a vast array of various cultures. Roxby Downs has over 42 nationalities and the Multicultural Food, Music and Art Festival was fashioned to promote cultural diversity. The event included spectacular performances by Ghanain sensation African Soul artist Bortier Okoe and Chilean spectacular La Bomba Productions with many attendees dancing and being part of the fun. Preceding workshops from October 9 to 12 were held by kneeHIGH Youth Arts Workshop where young locals translated both local and international stories into big displays for the main event including a walking elephant puppet, palm trees, a mosque, a school of fish and a fleet of aeroplanes. Food stalls featured various cuisines from around the world including; award winning Adelaide restaurant Beyond India, Yiros supplied by the Roxby Downs Scouts, tapas and sangria, Chinese, sushi and fudge from around the world. Bortier Okoe from African Soul also supplied traditional Ghanaian food and made an appearance at the Roxby Downs Community Club on Friday night. Other performances included Chinese music with Hong, bush dancing, the Wholias live band, Sing Australia and DJ Senorita. Artefacts from around the world were on show along with countless children’s activities. Vivienne Holloway, Business and Cultural Development Consultant to Roxby Downs said the event looks like what the community had been waiting for. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” she added.

Ms Holloway said she believes the Roxby Downs Multicultural Food, Music and Art Festival will have to be run again due to the overwhelming response. “Given that the Red eARTh Festival is biennial, it’s probably best that this one is too. There is only so much money (and energy) to go around each year, and it’s best if we share it around to make each important event as good as it can be,” she explained. “Definitely the biggest success was the way the whole community came together to celebrate. Ms Holloway added, “I’m so proud of all the contributors who shared their culture through cooking, artefacts, dress, and performances, the event would have been nothing without them. And the amazing committee who worked so hard to pull it all together Grace Morokai, Cindy Harrichund, Sister Pat, Rachel Richards from St Barbara’s Parish School, Christie Follet from Roxby Downs Area School, Kath Messner – the kids’ corner hero, Sasha Yantewo, Nikki-Sue Brecker, Bryce from Andamooka Primary School, Mary Daly, Kerry Orr and Nicole Threthowan.” “None of our local events would work without the many volunteers before and at the event – big thanks to them. Massive thanks to the blokes who came to help set up and pack down (couldn’t have done it without them). And of course, events don’t run on love alone – thanks to the sponsors Country Arts SA, Multicultural SA, BHP Billiton, Ahrens/Olympic Dam Precision Engineering, Roxby Council, Bianco Constructions, Coates Hire, RoxFM and The Monitor,” she concluded. The Roxby Downs Community Board was awarded two grants to fund the event; $15,000 was provided as part of the Regional Arts Fund, an Australian Government program delivered by Country Arts SA and $5,500 as a Multicultural Grant as part of the State Government’s Multicultural Grants Scheme.
