his year, the nation has been overcome with a case of the ‘uglies’. The Leukaemia Foundation has launched a new fundraiser aimed directly at the hospitality industry, called the U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the year.

With over 70 entrants already registered in South Australia, and Queensland, who has already culminated the competition, announcing its winner having raised over $8,000, the campaign is already considered a smashing success.

U.G.L.Y, which stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable You is a new initiative, aimed at raising community involvement and awareness of the severity and frequency of Leukaemia. The fundraising will officially start at the beginning of November, and be run throughout the whole month.

The Leukaemia Foundation was founded in 1975 and is the only national organisation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with Leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Services provided in aid of Leukaemia sufferers include counselling and support, disease – specific information materials, education programs and support groups, accommodation, transport and practical assistance. These services are provided free of charge to the sufferers and their families.

It is a not-for-profit organisation, whose support extends right over metropolitan, regional and rural communities. A successful and worthy foundation, considering there was 3100 new cases of leukaemia diagnosed in Australia in 2009.

“It’s all about raising money for Leukaemia Lymphoma, and all blood cancers in kids. Basically it’s just trying to get the community together to raise the funds,” said Mr Tuohy.

“The Tavern is excited to be involved, for the obvious reason - to help sick kids.

“I was nominated as the UGLY bartender because I have a great manager! No, I thought I drew the short straw but as soon as I looked into it I realised it’s actually a really good thing to be involved in, so I’m glad that I drew that short straw!

“All through November we’re going to be doing sausage sizzles, trivia nights, we’ve got a few things planned that haven’t quite been finalised yet, but we’re going to try and hold at least one thing a week, to raise money and bring everyone in – it should be a lot of fun for everyone.

“Donations from anywhere are definitely accepted, whether it be prizes for raffles, or anything at all! All money will obviously go straight to the kids. Just get involved and do what you can.

“A healthy competition between us and the club will be good! But ultimately, it’s for the kids, not us.

“We’ve set the bar low at the moment, just til we get everything worked out. We’ve set it at a $1,000 so far, but we want to raise much more than that.

“Every Friday night we’ll have a sausage sizzle, so proceeds from that will go straight to the kids. Other than that, there will be more plans announced later down the track.

“We’ll have fundraising boxes all around the Tavern.

he State Government release of the 2010-11 State Budget delivers some major new funding for key services.

According to the Budget, Roxby Downs Area School will get $660,000 of $860,000 in 2010-11 for new transportable accommodation for special education, expected to be completed

by March 2011.

Our region also benefits from an additional $4 million over four years to establish an Enterprise Zone Grant Fund for the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback to support jobs growth in these areas and help meet the needs of the mining industry.

In addition $0.5 million over 201011 and 2011-12 has been allocated to undertake a feasibility study on the establishment of an engineering hub to meet the needs of future mining and major development projects in the Upper Spencer Gulf region, and

the capacity of local industry to participate. This initiative delivers on a Government election commitment.

The Budget also contains changes to a number of revenue sources with the biggest reform, worth around $65.5 million over the next three years, coming from changes to the State’s mining royalties.

The mining royalty regime will be transformed to a new three-tier system to bring it into line with other jurisdictions and to ensure that mining companies pay an appropriate return from the revenue generated from extracting the minerals owned by all South Australians.

As for any specific investments related to the expansion, the State Government stated that “there has been a Government taskforce set up to liaise with BHP Billiton on its future expansion plans, so forward planning has been underway for some years.”

The infrastructure required to support the expansion is outlined in the EIS - the biggest document of its kind

produced in South Australia.

Increase of 13% in Country Health SA Budget 2010-11 – The Budget includes a total operating expenditure for the Health Portfolio of $4.46 billion – an increase of $424.5 million (or 10.5%) compared with the 20092010 budget.

Gary Stewart, A/Chief Operating Officer, Country Health told The Monitor that the Port Augusta, Woomera and Roxby Downs Health Advisory Council has endorsed a 10 year local health service plan for Port Augusta and Roxby Downs.

“This plan, which has been developed in consultation with the local community, acknowledges the need to consider the health service implications associated with the proposed Olympic Dam expansion.

“The plan has been submitted to Country Health SA and will be presented to the Minister for Health.

“SA Health will continue to monitor the health service needs of the Roxby Downs community,” he said.

Selling the potential of Vulcan – “the next Olympic Dam”

More drilling 30kms north of Olympic Dam

asman Resources Ltd hit the Sydney investor market last week promoting the Vulcan drilling as potentially the next Olympic Dam mine.

The 100 per cent owned Tasman Resources Lake Torrens project has 2,000 square kilometres of tenements just 30 kms north of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam. On 10th November 2009, Tasman announced the discovery of a new Iron – Oxide Copper Gold Uranium (IOCGU) system in the first drill hole VUD 001 at the 11km² Vulcan Project. This hole was drilled on the north-western portion of two previously untested gravity anomalies.

Assay results confirmed the IOCGU metal association, with an intersection of 53m down hole from 907m at 0.10% Cu, 0.04g/t Au, 0.021kg/t U3O8 and 0.4g/t Ag. This interval included a 10m intersection from 936m at 0.20% Cu, 0.05g/t Au, 0.047kg/t U3O8 and 0.5g/t Ag. Anomalous molybdenum and fluorine are also present. There is a distribution and strong correlation of copper, gold and uranium in the hole.

From five drill sites the company found strong mineralisation and with a further four to six holes to be drilled over the next month the objective is to outline a worldclass resource within the next 12 to 18 months.

In a report to the ASX executive chairman Greg Solomon said, the company contracted a low cost 2D seismic survey over the Vulcan IOCGU target. The survey took about a week to complete.

“Firstly, it will assist with mapping the distribution of the Pandurra Formation which was intersected in the final hole of the recent drilling program (VUD 005).

“Secondly, the seismic data are expected to p ro v i d e a n a d d i t i o n a l g e o p hy s i c a l v e c to r to the most prospective parts of the Vulcan target for the next phases of drilling.”

Diamond drilling at Vulcan is scheduled to resume in mid-October 2010.

Extra Defence Units to make use of Woomera and Cultana As more defence units will be based at RAAF Edinburgh and millions of dollars pumped into the economy, Woomera and Cultana near Pt Augusta will become important training areas.

About 1200 soldiers from the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment will move from Darwin to Edinburgh from December this year.

Defence Industries Minister Kevin Foley said last week the base had potential to expand further.

“Our aim is for Edinburgh to be a preferred location for future large-scale Australian Defence Force relocations,’’ Mr Foley said last week.

He said the government was lobbying the Commonwealth to expand the Edinburgh base. The Federal Government and Defence Australia make all decisions on troop movements.

“Combined with the upgrade and expansion of the state’s major test and training areas at Woomera and Cultana, there is no doubt that Defence would be considering what other units should be logically based in South Australia,’’ Mr Foley said.

A spokesman for Defence Australia said the department was undertaking a review of the country’s military bases, which would take up to 18 months to complete.

Fundraising ride from Roxby to William Creek

T

hirty-five riders have started organising a trip from Roxby Downs to William Creek and back with the aim to fundraise for the town and of course have families and friends get together for an amazing time.

Dave Secker is organising this adventure and he said there’s plenty of space available for those who want to come on board.

“Our idea is to get out there and not only have a good time, but also fundraise for something that involves the kids and youth in town. We want the money raised to stay here but we are still deciding exactly where it will go to. We want everyone’s input in this decision,” Dave said.

He told The Monitor the group is having a meeting on Wednesday, October 20, in the beer garden at the Tavern from 7.30 pm and

everyone that rides a bike and is interested to get involved or to know more about this should come along.

“We want everyone’s ideas but we also want a great event to be organised so we will form a committee on the night to get things happening.”

Dave said that the idea is to form teams of five people each and three bikes so riders can rotate during the trip. Entry fees for a team of five is $500 but for those who want to ride alone or have smaller teams will pay proportional fees.

“It’s ok for people to ride alone and not with a team; as long as they have a back up vehicle like every team, because we want to make sure everyone is safe.

“We are also going to have two mechanics that will go over each bike and make sure all the safety standards are in order. They will be following the bikes through the whole trip,” he said.

The group has Wardles as a major sponsor

but they are still calling for more sponsorship.

Teams are welcome to get sponsorship for the trip as part of their fundraiser as well.

The group also aims to get clubs or community groups to come onboard, even if it doesn’t involve riding.

“We will contact local clubs so we can have a breakfast together in the morning we are leaving and we also want to have refreshments every 100km of the trip, so we can stop for a rest, have a quick snack and a cold drink or coffee, as well as socialise with everyone that is on the trip. The stops would also help us keep track on where every bike is, so we can be sure everyone is fine,” Dave added.

Rotary vocational visit to ‘The Monitor’

By Celeste Lustosa The Rotary Club of Roxby District had a very interesting and different meeting on Monday, October 11 as they celebrated Vocational Service Month visiting and learning about the business of one of their members.

In the annual Rotary calendar, several months are designated to emphasise major programs of Rotary International. October is Vocational Service Month so during this period, clubs highlight the importance of the business and professional life of each Rotarian.

This year the Club had its meeting at The Monitor newspaper, where I was proud to show them the behind the scenes of a newspaper.

Amongst the things presented were what makes news, how to select what goes in which page, importance of advertising, deadlines, printing and up to the moment the paper arrives in everyone’s homes.

The Rotarians then asked questions and showed lots of interest in the fascinating media world.

Vocational Service is Rotary’s recognition of the value to society of all useful occupation, not just those which are pursued by Rotarians. It also promotes ethical standards in all occupations, including faithfulness and fidelity to employers, employees and associates, and fair treatment of them, their competitors and the public.

The Rotary meeting was pleasant and people enjoyed a great meal and fellowship at the office.

POLICE NEWS

Driver decamped accident scene

On Thursday, October 7, 2010 at about 11 p.m. a motor vehicle drove in a dangerous manner onto Axehead Street ROXBY DOWNS, mounted the kerb and collided with a live power box, pergola and tree. The driver of the white, Commodore, station wagon, decamped from the scene prior to Police arrival and is still outstanding.

Any information regarding the identity of this driver can be given to Roxby Downs Police.

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, at about 9.30 p.m. on Arcoona Street ROXBY DOWNS, a 30 yr old male was reported for driving with a prescribed concentration of alcohol. He blew 0.105 and was issued with a six month loss of license. He will be appearing in court at a later date.

Over the last week approximately five motor vehicles have been interfered with or broken into and items stolen, from the car parks at Camp 1. Can all victims please report any further incidents, so Police can gather information regarding possible offenders. Members of the public are reminded to remove any valuables from vehicles in these locations and if any information comes to light regarding any suspicious person, please contact Police and Camp Security.

TRAFFIC MATTERS Over the last week numerous traffic infringement notices were issued, in particular for speeding motorists. A provisional driver was issued a fine for failing to display ‘P’ plates, others for driving without seatbelts and protruding a limb from a motor vehicle.

New legislation will be coming into effect from the 31st of October 2010 in relation to the clamping of motor vehicles. All clamping related offences will increase from 7 days to 28 days. All driver’s are warned that their vehicles will be impounded for 1 month if committing prescribed offences in a motor vehicle.

he Arts & Culture Forum, along with members of the community, are looking forward to having another Red Earth Festival next year. For those who remember how great the last one was, it’s time to get involved and help it happen.

Rachel states that the possibilities are endless.

“Past Festivals have included singing workshops, exhibitions, poetry and creative writing, jewellery workshops, circus workshops, ‘RAW Dance’ company, ‘Cirkids’, oil painting, short film festivals, theatre production, music, life drawing, kid’s activities and photography.

“We are looking at running the Festival in August to coincide with the ‘SALA Festival’. This is a good time to put a call out to any artists who may be interested in sharing their skills by running a workshop during the festival,” said Rachel.

Previous Festivals have featured more that 15 local artists in a Festival period who have run workshops, that didn’t include those who performed. The Forum is hoping to attract new artists who are in town as well as to bring in some outside talent.

But Rachel explained that you don’t need to be an artist to get involved.

“We need a balance of skills to run a festival. Many people say ‘but I am not artistic’. That is ok, if you appreciate the arts then get involved. We can’t all be artistic; some people have to be good at administration and other tasks that artists leave unattended.

“Please don’t wait to be asked to be involved. Many artists/craftspeople come to town and leave town without letting people know of their skill. Some get upset because they don’t get specifically asked to participate. It is unintentional that talent is overlooked, often we don’t know about it. We need you to be forthcoming with your skills so that we can put more energy into producing an amazing Festival,” our talented local artist concluded.

The festival stemmed from the “Outback Fringe Festival” which had been an annual event held in the town in previous years. The change to “Red Earth Festival” came about with the formation of a new committee who had new ideas and ways of presenting them.

Previous Festivals have involved a very broad cross section of our community, age, interest, culture and gender. Some of the previous participants have been involved actively in the arts, some never experienced the arts and some have been artists who have been lying dormant and the festival has rekindled their flame.

The Arts & Culture Forum has begun preliminary discussions to get another festival done.

“We will be holding a brainstorming, ideas evening on October 27, at 7.30pm in the Dunes Café’. Light refreshments will be provided and we would like to invite all community members who are interested to come along and contribute.

“I encourage people to join us, sharing their ideas so that we can put together a festival that not only fits in with the vision of the Arts & Culture Forum but be an exciting Art Festival that our community embraces and participates in,” Rachel Young said.

Rachel also said that volunteers are needed for many tasks to make a festival happen. “Volunteers don’t have to be slaves to the festival, although once bitten by the festival bug it can be addictive.

Last week’s Hot Topic - Do think the three Australian soldiers should face manslaughter charges over deaths in a theatre of war?

This is outrageous! What young person would want to join the national armed forces under the threat of manslaughter charges by doing what they were sent to do, fight the enemy? Innocent people are killed in all wars. The one in Afghanistan is not different to WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq.

Anyone hiding behind innocent women and children are the guilty ones – NOT the Australian soldiers defending themselves against fire. Where is the justice? Not in Australia.

Nev. Australia is setting a very dangerous example by bringing charges against three Australian boys for doing their job in Afghanistan. If they are found guilty there will be mass resignations from the forces.

Eric C. Nobody will ever know what really happened when these children were killed. We can only go by what has been reported. It has been reported that they were killed during a battle between the Australian soldiers and Taliban insurgents. It has been stated that the Aust soldiers were defending themselves.

Are there different laws for manslaughter in a war situation as opposed to a day to day situation? I should hope so, otherwise a lot of Australia’s heroes would be in jail.

ET. I don’t think that the soldiers should be held accountable as they did not walk up to an innocent child and shoot them in the head. They were not aware that there were children in there when they did the raid. I think that it is hard enough for our soldiers as it is, no training in the world can prepare them for killing a human let alone a child. I think that this would effect them for the rest of their lives anyways. Haunt them in their sleep. We should be supporting our soldiers more in hard times like this, not putting them on trial.

ustralia has a very proud reputation of producing good sports, whether that be at the grass roots, State or National level and it must be protected at all costs.

Last week two incidents at the Commonwealth Games demonstrated a darker side to two athletes who weren’t prepared to accept the judges’ decisions. It reflected badly on them personally and also reflected badly on the other members of the 600 plus Australian team and that is not acceptable.

These so called elite athletes are role mod-

els for all the up and coming youngsters who want to pursue their sports to the top level and for them to behave badly sends the wrong messages.

We have so many other top athletes who just get on with it, even though they may lose a gold medal by a touch on the pool or a final lunge at the finish line on the track.

These are the champions. Champions when they win and champions when they lose.

Everyone can understand the frustration atheletes go through after years of training not to win gold or the disappointment they feel if they breach the rules during a race

and are disqualified. Everyone remembers the disapointment of our champion walker entering the Sydney Stadium during the Olympics only to be disqualified for not having part of one foot on the ground. She was obvioulsy upset and disappointed, not with the official but with herself.

There is no excuse for bad behaviour like we saw when two of our atheletes gave the finger to the judges last week. The same applies to local sports and footy in particular where tempers get frayed.

We must remember without umpires and officials there are no sports.

Interest sought for Port Bonython jetty The State Government is calling for Expressions of Interest for the refurbishment of the walkway and mooring access structures on the Port Bonython Jetty.

Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the refurbishment offered an exciting opportunity for companies or Consortia to undertake a major infrastructure project in an important region of the State.

“Port Bonython Jetty is a major hydrocarbon liquids terminal for South Australia, located at Point Lowly, approximately 19 kilometres north east of Whyalla,” Minister Conlon said.

“The impressive jetty is 2.4 kilometres long and the largest in South Australia.”

The jetty is owned by the State Government and access is provided to Cooper Basin Producers including Santos. The loading facilities, exporting LPG, crude oil and naphtha to domestic and international customers are operated by Santos.

“There are many potential dangers associated with giving strangers remote access to your computer,” Ms Gago says.

“Once they have access, they can obtain credit details and personal information to access your bank accounts or make purchases in your name.”

A

ustralia is a continent with a coastline that stretches more than 36,000km and which consists of more than 11,500 beaches.

A lifeguard service is a diverse operation with specific industry standards, across the public safety, training and development and medical research.

But it is not only on the coast that lifeguards are essential and that is why Roxby Leisure has eleven fully trained lifeguards and seven others being trained and ready for the duty by the end of this month watching the pools and making sure everyone is having a good time but in the safest way possible.

Roxby Leisure Operations Manager, Michael Esposito said while the pools are open there are always two eyes on the water at all times.

“We have one lifeguard for each 50 patrons at the Leisure Centre but the Australian standards are one hundred patrons for lifeguard, but with a minimum of two lifeguards working together at a time,” Michael said.

All lifeguards need to have a Pool Lifeguard certification, which is an annual qualification that needs to be redone every 12 months, along with the senior first aid and CPR courses.

“Every year we fly an instructor up from the Royal Life Saving Australia to conduct the training,” Michael explained.

“Roxby Leisure is working with Andamooka and Woomera pools so we use

it as an opportunity to train people for all the local pools plus if there’s anyone who enquires about it, we put them on a ‘expression of interest’ list and if there’s room available, we try to fit them in.”

“I am happy to say that during my time here we have had no major incidents at the pool. We had several minors, which include trips, bruises, but there have certainly been no majors.

“But to keep this as it is, with no incidents, it’s important for patrons to follow the instructions of the lifeguards. Basic things like no running around the pool, no back flips into the water, feet first entry needs to be respected and there’s a lot of common sense when you are dealing with water,” he said.

Kids under the age of 10 years need to be supervised by a responsible adult at all times and won’t be allowed in the pool alone, or in a group without a parent or an adult guardian.

Matthe w Kinnaird, Aquatic and Swimming Coordinator of Roxby Leisure, said that unsupervised children are a great challenge for the lifeguards.

“The main challenge for us is to make sure parents are supervising their own children. Lifeguards aren’t babysitters and we are here to protect the people as a whole.

“That’s why we have the under 10 policy, which says that if your child is under the age of 10, you will need to supervise your child at all times in the pool premises,” Matthew said.

Matthew has been a lifeguard for three to four years now and he enjoys

what he is doing.

“The ability to talk and interact to the patrons as they are swimming around and getting to know the regulars that come in is great. It’s a good kind of network.

“We do have a few dramas with kids being kids, when they don’t really take your instructions straight out but if you are firm with them, and explain what you are telling them and why they shouldn’t be running or doing certain things; if you give them a good reason for not doing what they are doing, they will be ok with it.

“The hardest thing is to tell a kid not to do something and then see their mum or dad do it. But we need to judge everyone by the same rules,” Matthew added.

Matthew also said that another great thing about the job is that if you’re lucky you might be able to go for a swim after your shift.

Another important thing when it comes to pool season is water quality and Michael said that Roxby Leisure maintains the correct chlorine, water chemistry – monitoring the chlorine levels, PH levels which has to be done every three hours. The life guards do the pool tests. “Come in and enjoy the pool, we have new pavers, new shades and the pool is looking beautiful. And if you bring your children, make sure you supervise them,” Matthew concluded.

It is now three days until the start of the 2010 Relay for Life. For some, this is the end of a multiple month long campaign, for others this is just the beginning.

Sponsors for the event have been gathered from far and wide (within the Roxby district) to enable that the event reaches it’s potential and achieves it’s goals; to raise money and awareness for cancer and to provide recognition for past, present and future cancer sufferers and those affected.

Michelle Suridge, branch manager at Auslec at Roxby Downs is excited at becoming a part of such a worthy cause.

“The Cancer Council is not a government funded organisation and with someone being diagnosed with cancer every five minutes, it is rare to find a person that hasn’t had their lives touched in someway by someone having cancer,” said Michelle.

“We have previously supported the Leukaemia foundation “shave for a cure” where Bianca (a co – worker)

and I raised $2800 by shaving our heads.

“In 2009, we at Auslec began our relationship with CanTeen with a percentage of sales of all private brands being donated to CanTeen, to support young people living with cancer” said Michelle.

Whilst Auslec has not submitted a team in the Relay, they are showing their support elsewhere. “We don’t have a team running, but will be there to support and help where we can during the relay. As a company we support the Cancer Council on a national level and have just had a research award named after the company - The L&H Group research award.

Friends like that are friends for life!

By Millie Thomas Nadia Jansen van Vuuren has recently left the community of Woomera after spending nearly four years infecting the township with her friendly and humorous nature. Nadia, who worked as the secretary of the Woomera Board for three years (employed by BAE systems) has since moved down to Adelaide to pursue a career with Olga’s Fine Foods.

“We moved to Australia with our three children. I have my parents and my sister back in South Africa,” said Nadia. “We left South Africa for a combination of reasons, but mainly because of the crime situation and corruption and especially because of the children. They deserve better than what South Africa had to offer.

“It is a beautiful country, and I will never forget where I came from, but Australia has fantastic opportunities, the people are so welcoming and it truly is the best country in the world to live in and raise children in,” she said.

“In 2006 Louis was offered the position of Site Supervisor for Cowell Electric in Woomera,” said Nadia. “We had been planning to immigrate to Australia for years, so this was the perfect opportunity.

“Apart from all the com-

munity involvement that was part of my role as Secretary of Woomera Board, I also volunteered at the Observatory.

“When I first arrived in Woomera, I was part of our local Tribal Gypsy Belly dancing troupe. I was secretary for 5RRR Rocket Range Radio for a short time.

“What I will miss most is the freedom the kids had.

They walked everywhere and were always safe. It is a bit different in Adelaide. And of course I will miss the great friends I made while living in Woomera.

When The Monitor asked Nadia what she would miss least about Woomera, she was honest and blunt.

“Flies,” she said.

Even though Nadia has only just settled into Adelaide with her children and partner Stu, The Monitor asked of the possibility of her returning to Woomera to live…

“Never say never I suppose. But my future is in Adelaide now. My kids have the opportunity to go to a bigger school, Stu and I are together (no more 1000km travelling every weekend!) and did I mention the shopping in Adelaide?” she said.

That answer is enough to convince any geographically isolated woman of a definite answer!

Paula Mckenzie, who worked closely with Nadia during her time in Woomera spoke fondly of their friendship. “Nadia arrived in Woomera in 2006 from South Africa with her husband and three children, and the town was never the same again!” she said. “I learned how lucky we are in Australia to live in a safe and harmonious community, and I also learned a lot about partying the South African way!

Woomera hosts The Stony Deserts Forum

Almost 200 delegates, representing over 140 groups from Friends of Parks and the Department for Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) assembled at the Eldo hotel in Woomera on August this year to attend the 26th Friends of Parks Forum.

The Forum had four official sessionsFriday night, Saturday and Sunday mornings, where guest speakers spoke about the following subjects- A Social history of Woomera; The Strategic Defence Role of Woomera; Aboriginal pre-history and history; Ecological adventures in the Outback; Natural History of the Far North and Mound Springs of the Great Artesian Basin.

The fourth session was the Saturday night dinner where three awards were presented by DENR and three by the Friends of Parks board.

There were three tours to Woomera village and Range E; Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam villages and Andamooka.

These tours happened on Saturday and were repeated on Sunday.

A tour of the Mound Springs and Arid Recovery was planned for Monday, but the weather intervened, so an alternative tour was arranged for Coober Pedy; thankfully enjoyed by those who went.

conservation parks, heritage site, coastal areas, caves, flora and fauna to preserve those special places so that future generations can enjoy what we enjoy.

Each year a different Friends Group hosts the annual Forum.

“I have been to 17 Forums, from Ceduna to Berri to Millicent to Kangaroo Island. In some cases where there are several groups they have a steering Committee representing those groups. This was one of those cases where representatives from eight groups met regularly over the last 18 months in Adelaide, with the help of a contact in Roxby Downs, who gave us ‘on site’ help.

“I would like to thank Bree Galbraith for her invaluable input. These days email is also a great help, especially when planning a forum 500 km away,” said Chair of the Steering Committee, Lesley Hunkin.

Also according to her, “the feedback comments received were very heartening and made me very proud of the great job done by the Committee members.”

“I would like to thank Greyhound of Roxby for their sponsorship of their buses for all the tours; BHP Billiton for their sponsorship of the Forum; Bernie and Rob Kinnaird from Inspirational Foods, for the wonderful lunches they provided for the tour on Monday and to Arid Recovery for providing the BBQ on Monday night,” she concluded.

New coordinator at Youth Centre brings welcome spontaneity

With Woomera’s current population being 200 people, (compared to the days of boom, where the more like 6,000 people roamed the streets) facilities provided to the community are kept to a necessity.

One of these necessary services is Youth Services, this being confirmed with the new appointment of Renee Krause as Youth Centre Coordinator.

24 year old Renee has lived in Woomera for about three and a half months, all the while working at Spud’s Roadhouse in Pimba, and a matter of weeks ago securing her job at the Youth Centre.

She moved her whole house up to Woomera from the Northern suburb of Adelaide called valley view, including her cat Jerry and dog

The Monitor speaks with Renee about the big transition, and what plans she has for the Youth Centre in Woomera. “i absolutely adore Woomera, that is why i moved here,” she said. “I have never seen anything more beautiful in my life than watching the sun rise over the desert.

“I had visited here before the move and fell in love with the town. I randomly rang up for a job at Spuds Roadhouse four months ago and got the job within a day!

“I packed up my house and moved here 2 weeks later.

There is nowhere else i would like to be at this time of my life.

“The best part is the scenery, the worst part is getting used to small town life!

“I have qualifications in drug and alcohol counselling, and have worked in that field for a year.

“After I am done travelling and working I will go to university and get either a social work or a psychology degree.

“I was a member of the Salisbury Youth Council where I lead a team who organised a huge interchange event to promote reporting crime.

We had many high powered guests including the Commissioner of Victims Rights and the Minister for Youth in South Australia.

“We created a campaign called “make time to report crime” from scratch which is now being distributed all across South Australia in forms of pocket cards, post cards and posters.

“I am a spontaneous person who bores easily. I wasn’t ready to settle into a career in counselling yet as I want to travel the world then settle down when I am older.

“My lease ran out on the house I was in and I spontaneously applied for the job at Spuds, I got it and here I am!

The Youth Centre, which according to the town’s Community Plan was closed in 2002, is prospering under Renee’s care.

“We get from 4 to fifteen kids coming at any time,” she said. “At the moment I am just going with the flow and building a rapport with the youth before I plan big activities. Having said that we have been playing games together like the chocolate game and stuck in the mud. We also just hang out and chill and chat.

“I am starting a Woomera youth group for youth aged between 13 and 23. We will meet regularly and discuss what issues we want changed for the youth of Woomera.

“We will run community events and raise money for whatever the youth decide they want. At the moment I am in the process of recruiting the youth!

Modern new entrance for Council office Council’s reception area has recently undergone some structural changes and refurbishment. This work was undertaken to create more public space to accommodate the growing number of customers visiting the council office each day. The reception counter has been expanded and reorganised to improve customer flows. The entrance to the reception area has been moved and there is now a passageway to the toilets providing more privacy.

“We have found that, particularly due to Service SA transactions on Wednesdays and Thursdays, the number of people visiting the Council was increasing. We needed to have a look at what space we had and how it could be used more efficiently. Using an unused part of the foyer was the solution.”. Michelle Hales Manager of Community Development, Governance and Strategic Support said.

“There is a new area for people to do their tests for learners’ permits. Booths have been created for this purpose. This area is in the line of sight of reception staff which is an important part of the testing process. This now frees up the interview room for staff to have private discussions and meetings with customers. Although it is early days and we are still making some minor adjustments we have already had some positive comments from customers” Ms Hales said.

NRM LEVY – what does it mean to you?

Ratepayers will have noticed that a Natural Resource Management (NRM) Levy has been added to Council rates this financial year.

This levy will be charged annually on all rateable land and is collected

by Council on behalf of the SA Arid Lands Natural Resource Management Board.

NRM levies have been in place in other regions for some time through the provisions of the Natural Resource Management Act 2004.

The levy for 2010/2011 is a fi xed charge of $25 on rateable land. All landholders in the arid lands region are required to pay the NRM levy.

This includes landholders in council and out of council areas. The levy was previously only paid by pastoralists.

This change recognises that everyone who lives and works in the arid lands region has an impact on the environment. Everyone shares a collective responsibility to take care of the soil,

water, landscapes, native animals and plants and ecosystems. Everyone enjoys the benefits of natural resource management and the income of many people in (and outside) of the region depends on the sustainable management of the region’s natural resources.

This not only benefits the communities but also future generations.

The NRM levy will be used to provide additional funding to the SA Arid Lands Natural Resource Management Board to take care of the natural resources and to tackle the natural resource management issues confronting the arid lands region. These include climate change, feral animals, pest plants, soil erosion and impacts on ground water.

Night meet attracts big names

For the last two years, Roxby has been victim to a motocross extravaganza, and this year is no different.

Past motocross night meets have attracted up to 1000 enthusiasts, all excited to see Riders from local and abroad race, jump and freestyle the night away.. New Roxby Desert Motocross Club (RDMC) President, Clint Gow-Smith has big plans for this year’s RDMC annual night meet, so clear your schedule for Saturday November 6, for this will be an event not to be missed.

Mr Gow – Smith speaks about what the public can expect from this year’s event, and wills everybody to come along to this family friendly event.

“We’ve got motocross freestylers, Jack Daniels promo girls, BMX freestylers for the first time, quad bikes for the first time and hopefully four or five different classes of racing on the night,” said Mr Gow – Smith.

Big names in the motocross freestyle industry will dominate the event, with plans of Ben Heindrich performing at the event. For those who are unfamiliar with Ben, he is best known for touring with the Crusty Demons and resides in Port Pirie where he is expected to bring morte local talent to the event.

“Ben is recovering from a big accident whilst riding on the Gold Coast, so hopefully he pulls through and can ride.”

Apart from the apparent success of the last two year’s motocross night meets, The Monitor asked Mr Gow – Smith why he, as this year’s president decided to continue with the event.

“The community demands such events I think,” he said. “We’re not affiliated with MA (Motorcycle Australia) so we can’t actually have competitive events

throughout the year. It’s the success of the past I guess, it’s just something the community now expects. That’s pretty much what drives it.”

Mr Gow – Smith and his family have lived in Roxby for nearly five years now and have been actively involved in the community in numerous ways.

“We’ve been involved in the RDMC since we moved up here with the kids, so for nearly five years,” he said.

“This year’s the first time I’ve been actually involved as a committee member and as president. No one else was going to do it, (take the position of president) and obviously with our constant involvement, our kids always being out there, someone had to put their hand up.

“This year we’ve basically got an entirely new committee, except for our treasurer Dale. We’re a bit light on for helpers this year, there’s a lot of families who have actually left the club. If we could get more people out and involved, the help would be great.

Anyone can join the club. We do family or individual memberships “It will be $10 entry at the gate for spectators and $25 day membership to ride if you are not a member. Anyone can ride but you must have ambulance cover.

“If you’re an active member, just pay your ten dollars at the gate and you can ride for the night! We will also be doing membership sign ups on the night.

One aspect that keeps events such as this alive is not only the invaluable sponsors, but also the volunteers. Unfortunately at this present time, the RDMC is still seeking the help of volunteers to make this night a success.

“Every rider needs to nominate a flaggy to keep the track safe while we’re racing. In general we need vol-

unteers to help out. Other jobs will include supervising the kids’ track (however, parents will still need to be there) and I’m putting a call out to members or friends of members just get actively involved on the day. The track will be closed for a week leading up for the working bee. Just get out there; there will be plenty to do.

But the talented young boy has gone a bit further this year and made his debut in a national competition.

The 2010 Australian Junior Motocross Championships had more than 670 bikes entering the competition, with 16 different classes and 455 competitors ready to prove themselves, stamping their name into the record books.

Long before the event started, an army of people were making their way to Lakes Circuit, just south of Newcastle and this crowd included our very own Liam - previously reported by The Monitor for his love of riding and great achievements.

The Junior Motocross Nationals happened last week in New South Wales, where Liam competed with 50 other children in his class, according to his father.

Liam is eight years old so at this stage he competes in the 50cc division 2.

“The nationals were a great experience, where there were riders from all over Australia, as well as other countries like New Zealand and the USA,” Mr Jenkins said.

While the season starts on Saturday, RDCA’s first big event is not until November 11 and 12, when the Sportsman’s night, Junior Coaching Clinic and T20 Celebrity Game are all being held, celebrating cricket in all its glory and raising funds for our ‘Flying Docs’ (RFDS).

The Monitor spoke with this season’s RDCA President, Craig Wilson who said there were many benefits of events like this. “We held these events last year and raised over $6500 for the flying docs and had quite a big crowd of approximately 1000 at the game- so it was very successful. The sportsman’s night was also very well attended and quite successful,” said Mr Wilson.

“We hold events such as this to promote cricket and encourage junior and senior players to join the clubs we have. It’s also to have a bit of a cricket party for the whole town to join in!”

Boof and Greg will captain opposing teams, and Wayne will wicket keep for both sides, in what will no doubt be an eventful and entertaining game!
