t was D-Day. Four very nervous, very hairy men awoke last Saturday morning with a flutter of anticipation.

What would that day bring? Maybe a couple of beers, a few good hours of football and most definitely, the buzz of clippers and the roar of support and acknowledgement from a reverberating Roxby Downs. Saturday, October 1, saw not four but seven locals lose their hair for cancer. Barry Mitchell, Josh Rose, Mick Gillespie, Merv Rogers, and wildcards Graham Warren, Ian Johnson and Kate Donohue went for the chop in front of a packed crowd, raising $70,000 for the Cancer Council SA. An approximate $35,000 of cash donations were made in the lead up and during the event, and in accordance with BHP Billiton’s MatchGiving scheme, this will double. The woman behind this incredible success, Mel Egginton was wrapt with the result. “It was just incredible,” she said. “The support has been amazing, the boys were fantastic, I reckon it’s taken about ten years off each of them, maybe not Rosie though, he’s still pretty young!” Graham Warren, local cricketer, sporting and beer enthusiast, MC and general man about town (let’s face it, there’s not much he doesn’t do) was introduced as the event’s ‘Wildcard’, voluntary shavee if $20,000 raised. As it turns out, $20,000 was just child’s play. “I didn’t doubt that we’d do well, though I never expected 35,” said Mel. “To be honest two

weeks ago I started getting nervous that we’d get the original $10,000, but even last week, the money that just started rolling in was absolutely insane. “Thanks to all those that have been involved, especially Graham, Ian and Kate for being our wildcards as having two very well known community identities and a Cancer survivor made the day even more perfect,” she said. The fundraiser even impacted Adelaide, with BHP Billiton’s metropolitan offices holding a fundraiser last week to add to the total. “From the bottom of my heart I sincerely thankyou,” said Barry Mitchell in his address to the club on Saturday afternoon. “It is just amazing, I can’t believe what a town like Roxby Downs is. I’ve been to a lot of places in my time in Australia and there is not a town in the world that is as generous as this place,” he said. He also pointed out that he and his visiting daughter made sure to buy a shaving set that morning for upkeep at home. According to Barry, Merv’s hair-free look is ‘average’ (Merv not only lost the remaining hair on his head but also his facial hair and eyebrows), expressed disbelief in the amount of time it took to tame Rosie’s mop and noted the change in Mick. All the jocularity though couldn’t hide his pride for Roxby. “As I said before, Roxby Downs is the most genuine, generously honest town in this country, we’re a hidden gem.”
