Andamooka Opal to reassess options

By Vanessa Switala he Andamooka Opal Hotel will reassess the viability of keeping their doors open due to the recent cancellation of all BHP Billiton room bookings via email without any other notice.

T

Manager of the Matthews Group which owns the Andamooka Opal Hotel said they were now considering mothballing the business due to lack of clientele. On Monday, September 24, Mr Matthews met with accountants to discuss the hotel’s various options. “We’re going to assess the situation over the next three months, until Christmas,” he explained.

Mr Matthews said the Andamooka Opal will apply to the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for their annual two to three week closing period over the Christmas period. “This time we’ll try to coordinate it with the Tuckerbox so that we’re both not closed at once. That’s something we don’t want to see. We’ll make sure that we don’t both close at the same time, that’s the aim anyway,” he stated. Mr Matthews told The Monitor at the same time he will put in a submission to the commissioner to be able to restrict trading hours if need be, based on lack of trade. “In the meantime we’re going to apply to the licencing commissioner to possibly have the option of limiting some trading hours. That’s really what we’re looking at up until Christmas,

to not be obliged to be open,” he explained. “Hopefully in the interim we’ll get some answers from BHP (sic) as to what the likelihood of future work is, and we’ll have to assess it in the New Year. “But it’s not looking hopeful in my view. If it’s cheaper to put (the hotel) into suspension and just put a caretaker there that’ll be something we will really have to consider in the New Year.” Mr Matthews added, “And that will be something we will be monitoring each week.” Mr Matthews said the Andamooka Opal Hotel has already reduced staff to 50 per cent. “We’ve gone down from about 14 to 18 people on staff during shut downs, but we are down to about six or seven now,” he stated. Mr Matthews explained, “At the end of the

day, there’s only limited trade in the town. People don’t want to commute from Roxby to Andamooka at night. Obviously you can’t drink and drive, that’s just not viable up there, the kangaroos; it’s hard to get people from Roxby where the population is just to come across. “It’s fine on Sunday- that’s a day we wouldn’t be seeking to restrict trading. It’s more very quiet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. That’s what kills it.” Mr Matthews said the company will provide the public with a month’s notice if they decide to close the Andamooka Opal Hotel’s doors indefinitely. Continued Page 2...
