Momentous Movember T

By Vanessa Switala

Bronwyn Laister (middle) will shave her head if OD Precision Engineering raise $10,000 in support of Movember.

en thousand dollars is pretty expensive for a haircut, but Olympic Dam Precision Engineering’s Bronwyn Laister is ready to put her head on the chopping block. The boys in OD Precision Engineering are growing ‘Mo’s’ in support of the Movember initiative but with a hair-raising twist… Bron will go bald if they raise the golden ten grand. The local staff has banded together to raise vital funds for the Movember cause, which sees many men sprout moustaches during November each year. The fun campaign aims to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health.

We all just want to see Bron without her hair.

OD Precision Engineering’s Phil Lacey

OD Precision Engineering’s Administrative Support Officer and Movember Team Leader Penny Bryant said the OD Precision Engineering team wanted to do their bit to support the initiative. “We have a majority male workforce, it’s a great male in-

itiative and a serious cause but this adds fun to it,” she said. General Manager of Olympic Dam Precision Engineering, Phil Lacey said an international investor from the United States of America has invested $200 in their team and was pleased their message had reached overseas. Mr Lacey laughed, “We all just want to see Bron without her hair.” Finance Manager Bronwyn Laister said it started as a joke. “I honestly didn’t think the

boys would do the Movember, and now we have heaps of them taking part,” she said. “I have set the challenge for the individual that raises the most can be the one to actually shave my head. I am feeling pretty confident that my locks will stay, however I do believe that Al from Transpacific has made it a personal ambition to help out as he is very keen to see my hair gone,” Ms Laister explained. Ms Laister said Roxby Downs is one place with a pri-

marily male population, and therefore the need to promote men’s health was extremely important. “Too many of our blokes stick their head in the sand and think it will never happen to them or they just simply ignore the signs. If we can get the awareness raised and help the guys feel more comfortable talking about these issues we are a few more steps in the right direction,” she explained. “And if shaving my head will help them get up and do

something then so be it. After all its only hair and it will grow back. A Mo can be grown and shaved but you can NEVER bring back a loved one.” The OD team will be holding a sausage sizzle at Mitre 10 this Sunday, November 18. Other fundraising activities are in the pipeline so stay tuned. To donate to the Movember OD Precision Engineering team go to mobro.co/ odpe. Donations can also be dropped into the OD Precision

Engineering office at LOT 4 Charlton Rd, Olympic Dam. Drop boxes for cash donations will also be distributed around town. The funds raised in Australia support equally the two main causes which are the biggest health issues men face. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the national depression initiative beyondblue.
