Neighbourhood Watch in Roxby R

By Vanessa Switala

oxby Downs is a step closer to becoming a better and safer community after an information and registration night was held on Monday, May 7 for a Neighbourhood Watch group in Roxby Downs. The evening saw approximately 30 community members attend the meeting in the Roxby Leisure Auditorium. Numerous Roxby Downs SAPOL (South Australian Police) officers attended and Second Officer in Charge of the Far North Service Area Inspector Ian Humby along with Senior Officer First Class Wendy Priestley travelled from Port Augusta for the meeting. Neighbourhood Watch is the police and the community working together to enhance communication and safety. INSP Humby said, “I think its fantastic the number of people that are here tonight. “The purpose (of the evening) is to explain what Neighbourhood Watch is and understand what it is and also at the end of the day we are looking for a decision if you guys want a Neighbourhood watch in Roxby Downs,” he stated. SO1C Priestley explained Neighbourhood Watch and how the group would be beneficial to Roxby Downs. She said Neighbourhood Watch is about, “being a good neighbourhood and being good neighbours.” “Neighbourhoods have changed. “But we would like you to get back to being good neighbours. And that’s what this is all about, being good neighbours.” The vision of Watch SA (which Neighbourhood Watch falls under) is to protect South Australian communities and its mission is to provide a coordinated approach to community engagement that enhances community safety and facilitates community preparedness. SO1C Priestley told community members Neighbourhood Watch can also assist in school safety, per-

sonal safety, business safety and security. “You all want to live in a safe community. You want people to come and live here and build this community. “But no one’s going to come to a place like this if they’re not going to feel safe. And this is how the Watch groups contribute. “The concept of community safety goes beyond crime prevention and crime reduction. SO1C Priestly added, “It focuses on all issues and implements that impact negatively on the community’s enjoyment of where they live and work.” She stressed the community should always report suspicious behaviour to the police. “Don’t ever think the police are too busy, that’s what they’re there for,” she said. “It’s our job. We don’t know what’s going on out there necessarily without information; without your help. “We are only human. We have one set of eyes and ears each but with you on board we would have many sets of eyes and many sets of ears so therefore it’s a great help,” stated SO1C Priestley. “Crime prevention and crime reduction are consequences of the enhancement of community safety. “The safer a community is, the happier people are to live here,” she added. SO1C Priestley also went through Watch SA’s six objectives which are; to promote collaboration between police and all sectors of the community through the problem solving approach to crime; to reduce the incidents of crime and disorder and enhance public safety; to reduce and rationalise the fear of crime; to educate the community on security issues effecting them and methods of improving personal, vehicle and building security; to deter criminal activity by increasing the likelihood of apprehension and to increase the exchange of information between the police and the community including the reporting of crime and suspicious behaviour.
