Toy Library fun for Roxby families P

By Millie Thomas

arents right across the globe have at times felt the pinch of meeting their child’s toy needs and expectations. Add in a remote locality and things can get tougher and even more expensive. Ali Webber and Sarah Kopman, both mothers of young children, last year discussed with their ‘mothers’ group’ the expense of toys and rapidly diminishing storage space, and sought to find a cheaper solution to suit all. The women decided a community toy library would best benefit Roxby Downs, taking into consideration the high percentage of pre - school aged children in the area. After many months of planning and dedicating up to 40 hours a week to the not for profit organisation, the Roxby Downs Community Toy Library is almost ready to open. “There wasn’t really that service here so we thought it was just something for the community to make living in Roxby a bit more comfortable and another thing for kids to do in the holidays,” explained Mrs Webber. Focussing on high quality and often larger toys, the program will be aimed at children from zero to four years of age and will be open for toy viewing twice a week, starting tentatively on April 24. “We’re going to be open to start with on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am til 12.30 and we’re just going to play that by ear,” said Mrs Webber. She explained the days and times had been chosen to coincide with current pre school programs at Roxby Leisure, Nippy Gym and Toddler Story Time, as an added convenience to parents. “We’re actually up on the stage at the auditorium, no kids are allowed up there, just the adults that will come and borrow them,” she added. The Library will have a range of fun

Laura Trotta, Sarah Kopman and Ali Webber with a small portion of the toys that are available through the newly established Toy Library.

and educational toys, as well as a section for special needs children, which has been funded by The Women’s Network. “We actually caught up with Karen Russell to get some sort of idea of special needs children and what type of toys that they need to develop certain skills,” said Mrs Webber. “We’re hoping that we can really provide some sort of real service.” Mrs Kopman added, “The donation from them (The Women’s Network) has gone on special needs toys.” Completely dependant on the support of volunteers, the library will extend its opening hours and expand the library. So far, the organisation has seen a limited response. “We’re not for profit, it’s totally community based so anything that we buy is all with funding and donations from people,” explained Mrs Kopman. Mrs Webber and Mrs Kopman estimated that of approximately 100 appeals for support, less than ten had replied. “We thought that we would easily get 20 (replies) and to date we have only had approximately 10 responses, which is a little bit disappointing” said Mrs Webber. However, local ‘mumpreneur’ Laura Trotta has offered substantial support to the group, through her business Sustainababy. “She’s been excellent and offered us discounts on all toys that she can source. She was one of our ten out of a hundred!” exclaimed Mrs Webber. Mrs Kopman also stated the organisation had received invaluable support from Roxby Council and Roxby Leisure in providing ideas, support and the venue. “None of this would be possible with
