ast Thursday was International Women’s Day when women all over the world celebrated the vital role they play in enhancing economic security for their families, communities and countries.

International Women’s Day celebrates the important role of women while still recognising barriers for equality still exist.

The Dunes Café was transformed into the Outback Supper Club by the Women’s Network for the sell-out event with 80 frocked-up ladies attending.

Delicious home baked goods were supplied by the Roxby Downs Christian Community Church with fresh fruit, champagne, coffee and tea also available.

The Master of Ceremonies this year was Teresa Baddeley who, when not working at Roxby Hourglass Jewellers, volunteers her spare time to Rotary Club of Roxby District, Community Board, Red Sands and The Traders Associa-

tion.

Ms Baddeley hosted the event wonderfully ,engaging with audience.

“I think it’s great to be able to have a champagne, go out with the girls and have a chit chat,” she said.

Throughout the evening a candle lighting ceremony was held which has been adapted for Roxby Downs. The symbolic ceremony is coordinated by Women’s Network Chair Kaye Doyle and has been finely tuned to feature our region over several years.

Ms Doyle said the night was outstanding with tickets being sold out days before the event.

When asked what was the highlight of the evening Ms Doyle exclaimed, “There were so many, how truly wonderful is this event?”

“The presentation of the quilt had to be a highlight though, exciting that we have a group of ladies coming together and produce such a wonderful quilt representing their lives and Roxby!

“I thought also that our guest speaker (Cece-

lia Woolford) was a wonderful find and as she is working with the Andamooka community it was a great way to introduce to Roxby as well.”

Ms Doyle added, “IWD has always been close to me.”

Guest speaker Cecelia Woolford who was recently appointed as independent chair of the Andamooka Town Management Committee said it was a privilege to be speaking at another International Women’s Day event.

Ms Woolford spoke around the 2012 theme of supporting women’s empowerment speaking about money and her life.

“To me money gave me the ability to make choices,” she stated.

“I put myself through university by working behind a bar and earning $3.50 an hour.”

Ms Woolford said she was continually given university books for her birthday, Easter and Christmas presents as they cost so much.

“I suddenly realised I’m going to be broke for the next four years and I didn’t want to be poor.

“So I deferred, and I’m still deferred,” she joked.

Ms Woolford also discussed the loss of her husband after just 17 days of marriage and her new appointment in the Andamooka Town Management Committee.

Ms Woolford is an inspiring woman who runs a successful wheat farm and sheep stud on the Eyre Peninsula. She is also an ocean racer and has sailed in six Sydney to Hobart races.

During the evening a completed panel of the Multicultural Quilt was presented to the community which represents some of the 40 nationalities based in Roxby Downs.

Once complete, the Multicultural Quilt will be displayed in the Visitor Information Centre.

The 2010 ‘Story Board’ tradition was also continued with women filling out forms on where they are from and what brought them to Roxby Downs. The forms are then included into a book to be presented at next years event.

RDA educational workshop on tonight

free educational workshop will be held tonight by Regional Development Australia Far North (RDAFN) for employer awareness training.

The training course will include human resources, employer responsibilities and obligations, legislation and collaborative opportunities.

Managing Director of Emu Consulting, Dawn HawthornJackson will present the workshop. Emu Consulting specialise in Aboriginal Cultural Awareness, environmental management, communication and community engagement services.

Ms Hawthorn-Jackson is a qualified trainer and facilitator with customer service accreditation.

She also has significant experience in the Far North and provides business service support to industries, small and medium business operators, government agencies and community notfor-profit organisations.

Topics that will be discussed during the course will include planning, recruitment needs and costs, attracting and keeping staff, contracts and conditions, government support, university student placement opportunities and employer obligations and responsibilities.

A taste of harmony

The Roxby Downs Multicultural group will adopt the ‘Taste of Harmony Campaign’ for National Harmony Day, on March 21.

The A Taste of Harmony campaign is a national initiative that uses food to bring together multicultural societies. It encourages businesses and organisations to host a ‘Taste of Harmony’ lunch, with which employees bring a dish representing their culture to share with colleagues.

The event is now in its fourth year of operation, with almost 2000 workplaces registering in 2011.

Coordinator of

Strengthening Our Families and Welcome Projects, Cindy Harrichund said through adapting the initiative, the Multicultural Group hope to inspire other organisations to register for the campaign.

“Our multicultural group has adapted to this initiative and we are holding A Taste Of Harmony lunch to help build awareness, acceptance and understanding of multiculturalism within our community.

“We believe that harmonious workplaces and social groups are the starting point towards achieving truly harmonious, multicultural communities,” she added.

Taking into consideration that one in four Australian workers are born overseas, Ms Harrichund recognises the need for acceptance.

“And, as an active social group in this community we recognise the need to acknowledge and support our rich cultural diversity,” she said.

By registering for the event online, companies, clubs or groups receive a free promotional pack including posters, napkins, balloons and table toppers for their luncheon.

Bush tucker is an art form T

he official opening of the Red Mulga Office in Tutop Street exposed the talents of modest indigenous artist, Colleen Taylor.

Colleen, a descendant from the Bangarrla (Father: Robert Dare), Antakirinja and Yankunytjatjara (Mother: Millie Taylor) tribes showcases her work at the Red Mulga office.

Colleen moved to Roxby Downs with her partner Ron Boland and two of her five daughters, Daisan, 17, and Kelly, 15.

She started painting at the age of 18, after moving from Port Augusta to Alice Springs. Picking it up simply because ‘the other girls were doing it’ and she was bored, Colleen has turned her hobby into a successful career.

However, she did say her first few pieces of artwork were more modest than what she achieves today. “It was just flowers and snakes, they were the easiest things to paint at the time!” she joked.

Not only has Colleen dabbled in canvas art, but also in jewellery painting, bartik, linoleum printing and general arts and crafts.

Using acrylics on canvas, today Colleen steers away from painting a traditional ‘story’, and focuses many of her paintings around aboriginal bush tucker.

It involves ‘gulda’ (the sleepy lizard), wild peaches, honey ants, wild lemons and wild onions.

“It’s just something I enjoy doing I

suppose, I have done it for that long, just lifts me up when I’m down, and stuff like that,” she said.

“When you’re down, just go to painting and it just lifts you up, you’re in your own world.”

Colleen has led an accomplished artistic life, having been selected to display her art at the Festival of Pacific arts in Townsville, and at a world expo sition in Sydney.

She also painted clay jewellery and other pieces for an international arts company called ‘Walkabout Clay Crafts’.

Another of Colleen’s claims to fame is when her artwork went all the way over to the United Kingdom.

“A bloke came to me when I was at that art centre in Alice and asked if he could buy a card that I had done for Princess Michael of Kent, the queen’s cousin, so that went over that way!” she said.

Colleen painted for a lady by the name of Janet Devorak who has an art gallery in California.

Throughout South Australia, you may find Colleen’s work at Augusta Park Primary School on the curtains, Front office of Roxby downs Area School, Reinhardt Viljoen’s office (BHP), Port Augusta Hospital, Steve Marshall (Shadow Minister), in the bedrooms of a retirement home in Ceduna, and at fashion parades put on by the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.

With almost all of her contracted work being won via word of mouth.

“I’ve done a lot of pieces here

there and everywhere,” admitted Colleen.

“I’ve just got to look at a canvas, a blank canvas, and I already know what’s going to go on there.”

Prices for Colleen’s artwork ranges from $50 to $6000, and can be viewed and bought from the Red Mulga office during office hours, Monday to Friday.

For each International Women’s Day event the Roxby Downs Women’s Network donates proceeds to a worthy cause focusing on women. Biannually, the proceeds are donated to an international cause.

On the evening, women were encouraged to vote from the following causes; Samunnat Nepal - an organisation in Birtamod in Jhapa east of Nepal, Kipepeo, Kibera slum Nairobi in Kenya, My Care, Hope International, Fistula Foundation and The Birthing Kit Foundation.

This year a donation will be made to the Fistula Foundation.

Obstetric fistula is a problem among some of the world’s poorest countries where many women give birth without medical help.

If a woman’s labour becomes obstructed, they will endure days of painful prolonged labour.

The baby is unlikely to survive and if the woman survives, her body is broken by childbirth. These women are shunned by their families and com-

munities, many of them only young girls.

Hundreds of thousands of women are currently living this way, suffering from the treatable condition.

The Fistula Foundation provides funding for fistula repair, prevention, and educational programs worldwide to help eradicate fistula.

New officers start work

oxby Downs Police Station now has two new police officers; Senior Constable First Class Kieran Baggoley and Constable Samantha Corneliusen.

Cst Baggoley commenced his first shift on Saturday, February 25 and was previously based at Sturt in Adelaide. He has been a police officer since 2005 and moved to Roxby Downs when his wife, Lauren won a job with BHP Billiton as an Occupational Hygienist.

“It was a combination of two things. One, I had been at the same station and I’d been in CIB (Central Intelligence Branch) for the last five and a half years and I wanted a new challenge and this opportunity came up when my wife applied for a spot up here with BHP (sic) so I thought it would be a good opportunity for me as well,” he stated.

When Cst Baggoley spoke with The Monitor he had only worked four shifts but believes the transient nature of Roxby Downs may be a concern for demographics within the community.

“One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a lot of locals in town who have been here for

25 years and there’s a lot of people who are transient- come here for two or three years at the most and there always seems to be ongoing issues whether it be disturbances between established members of the community and people who come in and out of town.

“I think there is a need up here to get that connection between people who come in and out very quickly and people that are established.

“Obviously it’s a lot easier said than done,” he added. “(The police) try to build that bridge so people up here understand it’s not Adelaide; it’s not the big smoke anymore it’s a different lifestyle up here and people up here expect a different type of behaviour.”

Cst Baggoley believes issues regarding disturbances can be resolved through communication with different demographics.

“It’s an expectation of a more peaceful lifestyle in the country and I think that’s the main issue.”

Cst Baggoley added, “Some people come up here because they want to earn a lot of money and good on them for doing it and get into positions that are highly sort after in the mining industry but also

because of the fact they earn a lot of money they indulge.”

Cst Baggoley worked previously near Glenelg in Adelaide and said he saw disturbances at licensed premises every weekend due to consumption of alcohol.

“In relation to alcoholism it does seem to be an inherent trait of country towns where socialisation does revolve around drinking alcohol and whilst there is the somewhat loutish behaviour at local pubs,” he stated.

“I’ve worked two or three nights out at The Tav (sic) or The Club (sic) and I haven’t been witness to any disturbances.

“It’s no where near as bad as I expected and it’s not as bad as it was in the city.

Cst Baggoley believes, “There needs to be a fine line between the act of socialising with alcohol and becoming an ‘alcoholic’ town.”

He said it is unfortunate if the community do not communicate with the police and report issues so they can be dealt with accordingly.

“I think it’s inherent within smaller towns that there is some trepidation with reporting incidents to the police which is unfortunate if it is the case.

people either ignore the problem don’t report it to us or take the matter into their own hands.

“If they ignore it it’s going to happen to their mate across the street or their mate two streets over.

Cst Baggoley added, “I think there is a need for people to understand that we are up here to make sure bad things don’t happen to people who just want to go about their life.”

“It’s the same thing throughout all country towns in South Australia.”

Cst Baggoley told The Monitor he thinks Roxby Downs is a great town and the community are nice.

“The town is what you make of it. There is a need to get involved with sport and community activities,” he said.

“If you sit at home watching television I think you’d get bored very quickly. I think there is a need to get out and be involved and I’m definitely going to be doing that in my time up here,” he added.

Cst Baggoley said the Roxby Downs police officers are travelling to Andamooka once a shift until the new police officer is stationed there.

He stated, “Just because there isn’t a permanent officer in Andamooka does not mean there is not a police presence.

Similarly, Cst Corneliusen recently began working at the Roxby Downs Police Station.

She originally started working as a police officer in 2009 at the Elizabeth Station and then was posted at Port Lincoln before transferring to Roxby Downs because her husband is employed as a boiler-maker at Olympic Dam. Cst Corneliusen commenced in Roxby Downs on Sunday, February 26 but said she has not had the chance to get ‘out and about’ as much as she would hope.

Cst Corneliusen said she is looking forward to working closely with both schools, in particular St Barbara’s Parish School.

“In recent meetings with St Barb’s principal, the topic of school and internet or cyber bullying

has been at the forefront of conversation,” she explained.

“The topic is not one of issue within the school at present; however, it is extremely important that students are made aware of the seriousness surrounding bullying.

Cst Corneliusen added, “I will be aiming to work closely with the classes and students individually.

“Fortunately, as I said, it isn’t a matter of dealing with a current issue, but we need to be mindful that not all bullying is reported.

“As the principal at St Barb’s and I have discussed, bullying is a deliberate action, and bullies need to understand that it might not be a big deal to them, but it is to someone else.

Cst Corneliusen said she aims to be tactful in how she delivers information to students depending on varying age groups.

“My role w ill involve making students aware of the seriousness of bullying and the consequences that can potentially result from such behaviour.

“I hope to work with students, teachers and parents alike, and look forward to continuing to contribute in other areas of policing and response, to ensure a safe environment for all those who call Roxby Downs home.”

Photography workshop a hit with local youth

eter Kapitola held his first photography workshop for the youth of Roxby Downs last Monday night with eight participants attending.

Five students from Andamooka have enrolled in the course, with Andamooka Primary School organising the mini bus to transport students to and from the workshops.

Youth Activities Officer, Nicole Trethowen thinks it is a fantastic way to offer the youth of Roxby Downs a skill they may not learn without a workshop.

She is thrilled to be working with Jodie Evans local librarian and ‘Youth @ your library’ organizer at the Andamooka Community Library.

“We’re really excited to have the Andamooka youth with us!” exclaimed Mrs Trethowen.

She said she is excited to organize more events where Andamooka youth can be involved.

Andamooka students Jeremy, Kirsten, Ali, Jessica and Elissa were joined by Roxby Downs locals Bill and Paris for the evening.

Mr Kapitola shared some background information and general knowledge of photography with the group assisting them with their individual cameras.

Mr Kapitola said he would like to hold more workshops as he has already done a lot of planning for the current workshops.

“I’ve actually had some interest from a few adults that would like to know more

about how to use their cameras better,” explained Mr Kapitola.

“So I’m thinking the next one will be an adult’s workshop.”

He believes the participants in the workshop now have a better understanding of how a camera works and what a lot of the jargon means.

Mr Kapitola simplified the explanation of aperture, shutter speed and film and sensor sensitivity during the workshop. He used blue liquid in a spray bottle with plastic containers which had different sized holes cut in the lids.

He said, “The blue liquid in the spray bottle represents the light coming towards your camera.

“The little droplets are like ‘photons’, which are the individual particles of light.

“The plastic take-away container represents the camera and hole in the lid represents the aperture, which we can make bigger or smaller to, let in more or less water (or light).”

Mr Kapitola added, “The paper at the back of the container represents the film or sensor. We can use a higher sensitivity (represented by using the absorbent kitchen paper), which lets in more light, but makes the picture more grainy or noisy.”

“The shutter speed is represented by how long I spray the bottle at the container.

“So you can see how all these things work together to control the amount of water that is absorbed into the paper, corresponding to how bright your picture will be,” he concluded.

Kirsten year seven, Ali year 10 and Bill year 10 make the most of Peter Kapitola’s knowledge of photography.

Mr Kapitola thought it was great to see children from Andamooka get involved in the workshop.

“It was great to see all the kids from Andamooka and that the school arranged the bus to get them here.

“It shows they really care about the students, not just what happens during school hours,” he stated.

Mr Kapitola is looking forward to seeing the results from the assignment he set the workshop participants.

Participants are to take 20 photographs of the same object from different angles and distances.

“This forces you to be more creative and think of different and interesting ways to take photos,” he

explained.

“I also asked for one photo that was really close up and we’re all going to try and guess what the object is.”

Mr Kapitola said now the students understand basic concepts, next week will be more hands on.

“We’ll go outside and take some photos as the sun sets, which is a good time for photos.

“We’ll experiment with longer shutter speeds in the low light, and should get some pretty interesting results,” he concluded.

The cogs are turning to get the karts rolling

oubt still lingers if the 2012 Billy Kart Bash will go ahead.

Event Manager Jack McGuire took to the airwaves Saturday week ago to ask RoxFM listeners to express interest in the event, in order to keep it going.

Mr McGuire needs both cash and in-kind support to get the event up and running for a third year.

Even he has doubted it’s triumphant return, until the good will of an expectant participant got under his skin.

“A lady phoned up, and said her son was making a billy kart in anticipation of the event happening,” explained Mr McGuire.

And that’s what got the kart rolling, so to speak.

Touching base with potential sponsors for the first time this year during his interview on RoxFM, Mr McGuire is still waiting for substantial support.

“At this point in time, I have had some response, not a great response because I think the message is just starting to flicker through.

“Hopefully, with the expression of interest, I’ll go back on the radio at some stage and hopefully push the barrier.”

Mr McGuire first became involved in the Bash in it’s inaugural year in 2010, helping mentor the people behind the idea, Carl and Renee Scothern.

The Scotherns have since left Roxby Downs, so Mr McGuire is also looking to source extra hands.

“I have asked Matt Holder to come on board as the main track marshal, so I’ve asked him to get as many people involved as he can, but its really only early days in reference to expressions of interest, trying to kick the momentum along.”

There are countless options in getting involved in the Bash, from selling drinks or keeping the scoreboard, to using the space as free advertising by setting up a stall – that is, only if you are not-for-profit, of course.

“If we don’t get people from the community getting behind for things like marshals, selling drinks and stuff like that, it’s just not going to happen, because I can’t do it myself,” said Mr McGuire.

“It would be a shame for the event not to happen, for lack of support in that regard.

“I think generally the community wants another event like that, but people are busy, people are working and they’re doing their thing.”

A major sponsor, who will be responsible for a large percentage of the monetary support and will ultimately gain naming rights to the event, is Mr McGuire’s key objective at the moment.

Sponsored for the past two years by Sodexo, Mr McGuire is open to all offers.

“For all intents and purposes, it’s still open for any company to become a major sponsor where they get naming rights for the event and they get the highest recognition, they get the highest raising of profile and that kind of thing.”

The event, whilst not technically a fundraiser will donate any ‘gravy that runs off ’ to a yet to be nominated community business or fund.

Last year, Mr McGuire gave $1500 cheques each to Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School and Andamooka Primary School.

Sing Australia meeting success

unday, March 4 saw the Roxby Downs Sing Australia Group meet for the first time with 20 community members attending.

Sing Australia meetings will now be moved to 7pm until 9pm on Sunday nights at the Community Church.

Next meeting will be on March 18 with a set contribution fee of $5 for adults and $2 for children per week.

Leaders Sue Durandt, Penny Knott and Dr Owen Lewis will relate officially with the

Sing Australia national office. Ms Durandt and Dr Lewis are also conductors with Mary Lewis and Kylie Dospisil elected as pianists.

Cherie Gaskin and Wendy Kruger will be looking after attendance and welcoming new comers.

Dr Lewis said the first meeting of the Roxby Downs Sing Australia Group went very well.

Putting such personal issues out there in cyberspace is a danger and as more and more people are finding out, it is something that can be accessed for years to come and can reflect badly on people’s job prospects, in cases of litigation - and we have all seen the outcomes of cyberbullying.

The first thing a potential employer does these days is check out a person’s past on cyberspace social media.

It is a lesson many people in Roxby Downs should heed as they bare their inner most thoughts, deeds and actions for the whole world to follow, if that is their want.

Facebook actions are being tested in the courts and will contribute to reputations and affect lives if allowed to go on unabated. Cyberbullying has already contributed to teenage suicide far too many times.

In a malpractice or car accident case, Facebook can be used to show that the plaintiff is not as seriously injured as claimed. If you put up a picture of yourself skydiving on Facebook, there is a real good chance you are capable of going back to work.

Nearly 500 million people use social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Much of what is posted on those sites is becoming fair game for the legal system.

There has been a lot of talk about how the Facebook explo-

Even after these warnings a recent survey in England revealed seven in 10 youngsters said they were unconcerned that their personal profile could be viewed by strangers.

Mr Tregenza succinctly cited the Reserve Bank of Australia in saying; “According to the Currency Act 1965, coins are legal tender for payment of amounts which are limited as follows: Not exceeding 20c if 1c and/or 2c coins are offered (however, it should be noted that these coins have been withdrawn from circulation but are still legal tender).”

Mr Tregenza told The Monitor all he wanted was to bank his two cents and he was outraged when he could not.

“I want my two cents worth,” he said jokingly.

“What’s the world coming to? I want to see justice done. This is a travesty!

“I am shocked and disgusted, I demand satisfaction,” he laughed.

“This has caused me great embarrassment.

“I can’t believe that in this day and age these atrocities occur,” he said tongue in cheek.

The financial institution in question retorted to Mr Tregenza’s indignity by stating there was no way the system could accept a two cent coin and he was being a tight wad trying to bank such a small amount!

The manager of the branch said, “When the member first walked in our doors we knew we were in trouble.

“On this particular day, I could see the determination in his eyes and I wanted to squash it!

“For anyone else I may have made a call to see if it was possible, but for this member, anything I can say no to, I go for it.,’ she laughed.

Not many banks would have accepted two cent coins; probably not since the early nineties.

Area school inducts 2012 school leaders

oxby Downs Area School welcomed new student leaders last Tuesday in front of family and friends.

School Principal Kath Macalister told the student body it was an important and significant day for all elected leaders.

She said the role of the leaders was to speak to teachers on behalf of students, and encouraged all elected leaders to make the parents and school proud.

Guest speaker Rachel Young, a long serving member of the RDAS Governing Council and renowned local artist used an Aesop fable called ‘the wind and the sun’ to help depict to children some characteristics of good leaders.

She outlined a real leader faces the music even when he or she does not like the tune.

In parting, Mrs Young drew words from popular children’s author, Dr Suess’ ‘Oh, The places you’ll go’.

“Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to great places! You’re off and away! “ Yo u h a v e b r a i n s i n y o u r head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself

2012 Postie bash registration success

By Vanessa Switala The 2012 Postie Bash registration night was a huge success with all team positions being filled.

Registration night was held at the Oasis on Friday, March 9 from 7.30pm.

Unfortunately, if teams were unable to register they have now missed the opportunity.

This year’s Postie Bash will be held on June 23 and 24.

The Postie Bash organisers would like to challenge the local community to create a Postie Bash theme song and poem. There will be two divisions; kids under 15 years old and a open division.

March’s safety theme is suitable load restraint, a timely reminder for those choosing to go away camping, or even in everyday driving.

It is unlikely children will be as impressed with smashed chocolate pieces as they would whole Easter eggs, so even the Easter Bunny should take this into consideration.

What you may not know is there is often a greater chance of losing a load when braking at low speed than at high speed as it is easier for the brakes to grab at low speed.

Another interesting point is that a heavy load is just as likely to fall off as a light load, so regardless of if you’re transporting a bed or pot plants each are as likely as the other to fall off.

CFIT encourages all drivers to check and double check all facets of their vehicles before embarking on a trip away.

Some important points to remember include; - Checking tyre pressure, - Ensuring water and oil levels are high nd, - Making sure car and trailer registration is up to date.

Spills of hazardous substances such as oil or petrol can have a dire effect both on the environment and other road users at the time. It changes their driving environment suddenly and can result in sudden accident or worse.

Cleaning up of spills also falls straight back onto the wider community, at the cost of you.

Consider the implications of carrying an unrestrained load before your next trip. If the above points aren’t convincing enough, perhaps a consequential inclusive fine may be.

outh Adv isor y Committees (YAC) are groups of young people aged 12-25 years who work in partnership with local councils to provide advice on decisions that affect their lives.

YAC has two main aims: 1) Empowering young people aged 12 – 25 to actively identify and advocate for local youth issues and to contribute to broader community issues.

2) To encourage the community to develop and support ways for young people to become active contributors to their communities.

The YAC must have no less than five young people, hold a minimum of eight meetings per year actively seek views, opinions and advice on issues that affect young people.

In other local govern-

ment areas YAC is run as a subcommittee of the council, but Roxby Downs is a little different. The Office for Youth was contacted and was supportive of a proposal for our YAC to become a subcommittee of the Community Board, with some operational conditions but it’s all good news for the youth of Roxby Downs.

This will mean the YAC, as a subcommittee of the Community Board, will have a direct voice to Council, BHP Billiton and the community in general.

Andamooka Structure Plan Workshop It is anticipated that the Andamooka township could undergo significant growth in the near future with the expansion of the nearby Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs.

The McGrath Foundation aids the placement of Breast Care nurses in communities across Australia, as well as to increase breast awareness in young Australian women.

The event was organised by the Roxby Rogues Cricket Club, and the team was supplied with pink stumps, pink hats and pink wicket keeping pads to use on the night.

The event was well supported with many people wearing pink to the game.

A special mention should be made of umpire Graeme Warren, who used the theme as an excuse to wear his favourite colour; and also Paul Polujnikoff who batted sporting a pair of home made pink pads.

In all the game raised over $1600 which well exceeded the target of $600. Donations can still be made on line at http:// pinkstumpsday.gofundraise.com.au/page/NathanielAnderson. Credit should go to all involved in organising the game, particularly Nat and Tracey Anderson, Barry and Stacey Dadleh, Ben Crosby and ‘Legend’ for stepping up and helping with the barbecue.

n the final round before the finals, Roxby Rogues took on Andamooka in Roxby Downs on Saturday night.

The Rogues won the toss and batted but didn’t get off to a great start, slumping to two for 14, with Ben Hahn picking up a couple of early wickets. Tristian Baldey and Paul Polujnikoff then got the innings back on track, taking the score to 94 before Baldey lost his wicket for 28. Polujnikoff continued to bat well but could not find a partner to stay with him, and when he was run out for an even 50, Rogues were seven wickets down for only 110 runs.

The Rogues innings needed rescuing for a second time, and Matt Hayball (30) and Sachira Muthukumurana (18) were up to the task, putting on 50 for the 8th wicket. The innings ended shortly after with Rogues bowled out for 170.

Best bowlers for Andamooka were Ben Hahn with three for 21 and Budda Ross with two for 27.

also got off to a poor start, with Rainsford and Viney both in the shed within three overs, thanks to some good bowling by Adrian Boulton. Lock and Pattinson then combined for a 67 run stand, which included some big hitting by both batsman.

The dismissal of Pattinson to Brett Baldey for 36 triggered a collapse, with Andamooka losing 4 for 4 in 12 balls. This effectively ended the game, with only Ben Hahn delaying the inevitible, making 30 before he was the last man out with the score on 116.

Next week the finals begin with Rogues to take on Olympic Dam on Friday night, with the winner to progress to the grand final. Andamooka play Wanderers on Sunday to earn the right to play the loser of Friday night’s game. On Saturday night a combined Roxby Districts Cricket Association side will play a Twenty20 game agains the visiting Walkerville CC, who compete in the A1 grade of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association.

ong time car enthusiast Darko Filko has embarked on a year long project - rebuilding a 1968 Dodge Charger from scratch.

Mr Filko shipped the shell of the 68 charger from San Francisco in mid 2010 after indulging in a lifelong interest in cars.

The long and arduous project will see the rusted out American muscle car turn into the everyday drivable, right hand drive prized possession of the Filko household.

The charger’s engine is currently being rebuilt at Neal Automotive in Port Augusta, while Mr Filko continues to disseminate the car.

“I’ve tinkered with cars this year, but not to this extent!” said Mr Filko.

Hours of research has gone into this rebuild, including online Dodge Charger forums, the careful study of the car’s field service manual and general life experience with cars - as Mr Filko put it, ‘jack of all trades, master of none.’

“Having the field service manual for this as well as a guideline has been very helpful. When I take the bolts off, I know which ones go back and where,” he said.

Contrary to this article’s slightly misleading title, the ‘68 charger is not the exact model used in American hot rod film, Dukes of Hazzard.

“The Dukes of Hazzard was a ‘69,” explained Mr Filko.

“There are only subtle differences such as the rear lights are different and the front grill, but everything else is pretty much the same.”

Mr Filko added, “I have always been into cars, I guess the problem is when we moved up here we got Austar and all those Discovery channels with ‘Overhaul’ and that sort of thing.

“I won’t admit that I’ve actually got the first couple of seasons (of MTV program Pimp My Ride) on DVD. “That was what really sort of sparked my interest in doing up a muscle car.

“I looked for an Australian muscle car but I guess I was after more the uniqueness from something imported, something that you don’t see every day.”

To be able to have the car fully registered and road worthy, it had to be converted to right hand drive.

“Any car over thirty years old can be registered left hand drive but it has to be stock standard original, as it rolls off the production line,” explained Mr Filko.

“These cars are too boring like that, you want to have the extractors and all that sort of stuff, so to do that you have to convert it, so that’s the reason I’m going down that path.”

Ordering all needed parts online which only has an approximate two-week wait has made the process easy for Mr Filko, plus some help from mates.

“I’ve had mates up here who help me pull the engine out and bits and pieces, mainly because I don’t have the tools myself to do it and obviously getting the engine rebuilt itself but everything else is done and will be done by

myself,” he said.

“The goal for this year at this stage is just to get it back on its wheels but yeah look it won’t be road legal for another three or four years, which will be a shame.”

The interior of the car will be completely overhauled, with brand new convertible car seats with inbuilt seatbelts installed, plus a custom made dash and all new wiring.

The exterior, however, is still debatable.

“That’s a big, big question at the moment, because there’s three options I want to go,” said Mr Filko.

“It’s a Lexus colour, its called amethyst pearl. it’s virtually black, but it shines purple in the sun and it’s metallic as well, or the other option is to go gloss black with like a slight purple tinge to it or flat black, basically like it is.”

This teamed with stock standard original ten-inch wide, 14 - inch diameter slot rims will set off the desired look.

So far, Mr Filko said the project had been running smoother than anticipated, the only hold ups in the future being getting professional engineering approval for the car to be registered, and a certified welder to secure the right hand drive steering column and the new roof.

But until that comes, it will be constant work for years to come. “I have an arrangement one day of the weekend I can work on the car, as long as the other day is spent with the family.

The five-a-side outdoor event will consist of mixed teams with ladies, men and children all able to compete in the 13-year-old and above competition.

The soccer matches will be held every Sunday at 11.30am and will consist of 15 minute halves.

The ten-week tournament will finish with the top four teams playing in the finals.

Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first and second teams.

Teams must provide their own shin pads.

Teams without shin pads will not be able to play. Teams must also have a minimum of three players on the day otherwise they will forfeit the match.

A registration fee of $40 per team applies with game fees of $35 per team also apply.

Beth remains dedicated to OD netty B

eth Elliot has remained vigilant in her involvement in netball, despite a debilitating back injury in 2009.

The injury rendered Beth unable to play netball for her club, Olympic Dam Devils, but didn’t stop her from stepping up to take position as President of the Netball Club for over two years.

Under her guidance, the club has evolved from two netball teams to five, with all teams competing in some level of finals in 2011.

Beth has forgone her position for the 2012 season, handing the reins over to A-Grade Devils player, Ali Knights.

She reflects on her years helping build the Olympic Dam Netball Club.

“I think we’re a pretty close club and the netball girls are all out there to have fun,” she said.

did the various graded teams have to share only one netball court for training, but time on the court during games had to be shared fairly.

“I coached the A grade last year, so that was trying to not be seen as just trying to do stuff for my team, but for all,” said Beth.

“I went out last year, I remember the first training and going, ‘oh, I wonder if anyone is going to rock up! Is it just going to be me and two people sitting down?’ and then all of these people rocked up that we didn’t know!”

Beth helped orchestrate a recruitment phase a couple of years ago, which has evidently paid off for the club.

“A couple of years ago we did the letter drop, and tried to do the big promotion thing, and we wrote letters to juniors,” she explained.

“We had a couple of girls come out who weren’t able to play seniors, but they were happy to come out and train, which was great.

“I think that’s an area which our club lacks; because we don’t have that upcoming from juniors, which to me is the future.”

Above all, club unity was a major priority for Beth, but keeping that morale was not always easy.

“Having the five teams, I wanted it to work as a club,” she explained.

Due to the club having two teams both in B and C grade, deciding how to load the teams required due consideration.

Whether to load one of each grade’s team with the most skilful players to increase chances of a premiership, or spread the skill evenly was a tough decision for Beth.

She decided that an even spread of skill was the fairest policy.

“Some people didn’t agree with me, but it was my feeling that it wasn’t fair on the other team.

“I’m out there to have fun and if you get that far and be successful, well excellent, but to me, it’s more about that club morale.”

Quite obviously passionate about her role and netball, Beth said she only gave up the position to pick up employment.

“I enjoyed it, it was challenging, and the only reason I stopped is because I have come back to work and I’m back at work three days and two young kids, and everything else,” she said.

Beth will however remain on the Club’s committee, and act as Ali’s ‘right hand man’, offering help if she needs it.

However, Beth has full confidence in Ali’s capability.

“She’ll be good, she’ll be great,” she said. “She’s very organised as well and loves sport, any type of sport.”
