Kerbside recycling is here at last!

T

he first pick up cycle commenced today for the kerbside recycling and waste collection system with general waste and recycling (red and yellow lids) being picked up this week. Some important changes have occurred with Roxby’s new waste collection service. There will no longer be pick ups on Monday or Tuesday with general waste, this will make way for the new service that will include fortnightly recycling and green waste once a month. For this week only, the old ‘general waste bins’ (your current green bins) will be picked up along with the new ‘general waste’ bins (the red lidded bins) to avoid any inconvenience in havign to transfer waste! The new bins started rolling out from February 29 and information brochures and calendars have been distributed with specific dates for the new pick- up cycle. This information is also on Council’s website at www.roxbydowns.com. The existing green bins households already have will now become green waste bins. The smaller red lid bins will be for general waste and the yellow lid bins are for recycling materials that can be recycled, but not plastic bags. Many community members have been the driving force behind the recycling system and proposed the idea to Council a few years ago. Peter Keller, Works Manager of Roxby Downs Council said the Council has always been happy to introduce recycling but it has been tough to organise. “A new contract had to be set up. It has been an arduous contract process which was complicated by the number of alternative possibilities on where the waste goes,” stated Mr Keller. “Happily, we can say after eight months from when we first started the contract process the outcome has been positive that a local company has won the contract for the community.” Mr Keller reassured The Monitor it is positive that BSH Waste Solutions has secured the contract as it will be good for local jobs.

Most waste will be transferred to Adelaide where the appropriate facilities for the processing and long term monitoring of the disposed waste occurs. “It will greatly reduce the tonnage going into landfill,” said Mr Keller. “Council is really pleased this is happening!” BSH Waste Solutions Director, Brenton Smith said the roll out of bins was slightly delayed due to the heavy rain last week but the new kerbside recycling system is now ready to go. BSH Waste Solutions Waste Manager, Jason Rhyan said a total of 3,200 bins have been distributed but the rain last week put the process behind. Mr Rhyan has only been employed by the company for four weeks and has been involved in the colossal job of rolling out the bins. BSH Waste Solutions has not only assembled four 40 tonne containers of bins, but also distributed them and documented bin and house numbers so if bins go missing or are found elsewhere they can be traced back to the house. Community Board member and representative of the Environment Forum, Darren Smith is thrilled to have the new kerbside recycling in place. “The implementation of re-vamped waste collection and in particular kerbside recycling is an enormous leap forward for Roxby Downs,” he said. “It brings us more into line with the thinking of a young vibrant community, and I see it as the culmination of many years of discussion and lobbying by the Environment Forum. “While several of the key Environment Forum people involved over the years have moved on, I am sure that they would be smiling if they pick up The Monitor and see the headline. “Discussions over the years with Council were always positive and open to the idea of kerbside recycling, and I commend the Council for the way they included kerbside recycling as an option in the recent tender for waste management services for Roxby Downs.” Mr Smith concluded, “I congratulate all current and past members of the Roxby Downs Environment Forum for their part in this achievement, and

Tyler Smith from BSH Waste Solutions rolling out the new recycling bins I believe this will breathe new life into not only the Environment Forum, but also will highlight that change is achievable through our system of Community Forums.” Town Administrator Bill Boehm agreed saying, “Roxby Downs residents now have the ability to make a positive impact on our environment by recycling.” “The new service is in line with the South Australian strategic plan and waste strategy to avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle to decrease

our landfill waste stream and is a significant step toward a more sustainable town.” If you have not yet received a calendar or information regarding the new bin system please contact the Council on (08) 8671 0010 or visit www.roxbydowns.com for updated information. Enquiries regarding bin collections should be directed to BSH Waste Solutions on (08) 8671 1154.
