Our winners honoured ROXBY DOWNS AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
C
ouncils across Australia are charged with the task of coordinating community nominations for local Australia Day Awards and Roxby Downs Australia Day award winners were honoured today at a special event. Long time resident and community volunteer over the years in the town, Merv Rogers was named the town’s Citizen of the Year. Land Speed record holder Mal Hewitt was named Senior Sports Person of the Year, and Jackson Millard; Young Sports Person of the Year. In a first for the Australia Day Awards a ‘Team of the Year’ was also honoured and the inaugural award went to the Roxby Downs Area School Year 6-7 Country Netball Champions. In announcing the winners of the awards today Administrator of the Roxby Downs Council Bill Boehm said, “today as part of our country’s Australia Day celebrations, we are recognising great Australians and their contribution to our community and to the nation. This recognition of greatness happens at every level and ranges from acclaim for high profile Australians at national and state level to people barely known outside their own communities, but all stand equally, side by side, as champion Australians who epitomise what it is that make our nation, our community , our people great. “It has been a difficult task to select the winners with excellent nominations received, all of whom were worthy recipients of the award in their own right.” Mr. Boehm said Roxby Downs has an outstanding track record of rallying to important causes, individuals in need and volunteering. We are also becoming better at acknowledging our volunteers and champions which is an important attribute for our community to have. Today is one of those occasions where we can pay tribute to our local heroes. The Award for Australia Day Citizen of the Year goes to Merv Rogers, a man who is one of the longest standing residents of Roxby Downs of some 24 years and has been an active community contributor over all of that period. Whilst known and respected by many it is clearly time that Merv be formally recognised for his community achievements. Merv’s contributions to the Roxby
Downs Community are well known with all of the past and present organisations that Merv has been involved with. Merv has been fully and actively involved with the Roxby Downs Community Club as a member and then elected onto the Committee in 1996, serving on the committee until his election as President in 2008. The importance of the Community Club to the wider community cannot be underestimated as many thousands of dollars have been actively distributed to community groups over the years. During a very difficult time he worked tirelessly in many capacities, especially through a major development over the past three years when Merv was called upon to assist in the construction, employment processes, supervision and strategic planning of the Club. Merv’s role and his leadership, influence and local knowledge have been invaluable. His love and passion for the Olympic Dam Football Club is well known and has been recognised as a Patron to the Club. Even now Merv is still working behind the bar as a volunteer when many would have thought that he deserved a night off. In September 2010 Merv was also a worthy winner of “Big Sky Community Person of the Month” award here in Roxby Downs. Continued on page 2
