Thomas shows brilliance in Year 12 results By Millie Thomas
R
oxby Downs local Thomas Russell has wowed his parents and friends recently, scoring a tertiary entrance ranking (TER) of 98.5.
Not only did Thomas achieve an exemplary score for his senior schooling in general, but he did it through the internationally recognised senior schooling program International Baccalaureate (IB), with his corresponding IB score equalling 39/45. Thomas completed years
four to eight in Roxby Downs, before moving down to boarding school in Adelaide at Prince Alfred College. The IB program he chose to complete Years 11 and 12 through is an alternative to SACE, and offers exposure not only to general curriculum, but also incorporates factors such as community service, and philosophical study. Over Years 11 and 12, Thomas studied standard level IB maths, beginners Italian, environment systems and societies, and high level physics, English and chemistry.
On top of that, he also completed the additional compulsory components of TOK (Theory of Knowledge) and an extended essay of 4000 words on a topic of his choice, to be graded on a total score of 45 for the duration of the course. He said he chose the program, which is notoriously more challenging than SACE, because of its well-rounded approach. “It’s more all-round sort of thing and it is a bit harder … you have to do 50 hours of community service, 50 hours of sport and creativity over
the two years,” Thomas said. Thomas completed most of his community service in Roxby Downs, helping out with community programs at the hospital, and coaching squash. He explained he learnt of a child who became upset after a squash coaching service left town, so decided to use his skills to help. “I knew some of the parents who had done that and one of them had said their kid was devastated that the service was gone, so I did some volunteer squash lessons with him, just a one-on–one
thing,” Thomas said. “He was very excited about it every time, so it was alright.” This year, Thomas plans to head straight to the University of Adelaide, to commence a four – year course in Petroleum Engineering. He is contemplating picking up a double degree in another form of engineering at a later date, but for now, he’ll just settle into being a university student.
