Spaceport Woomera Woomera could become the world’s foremost spaceport by 2008.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected two American companies to supply cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).

The decision could provide hundreds of jobs in Woomera and the surrounding region, as well as boost development and tourism.

Woomera Board Chairperson, Stuart Knox, said the town would gladly accept

either company.

“Obviously we would welcome Rocketplane-Kistler or SpaceX with open arms and the benefits for Woomera would be huge, especially in the areas of development and tourism,” he said.

However, Mr Knox said that as far as he knew neither of the two companies selected by NASA had made any formal application to use Woomera as a spaceport.

Kistler and Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) from California, have won the right to share in up to $US500 million in NASA grants to develop launch vehicles and conduct orbital flight tests.

NASA’s acting Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Program executive Marc Timm said the decision to involve private companies marked a break in tradition for NASA. “This is the first opportunity NASA

has taken to engage entrepreneurs in a way that allows us to satisfy our needs and lets commercial industry gain a foothold.”

“It could, and should, have a profound impact on the way NASA does business,” Mr Timm said.

On it’s website Rocketplane-Kistler lists Woomera as one of two spaceports - the other being Spaceport Nevada in the United States – where it intends to launch it’s K-1 reusable aerospace vehicles.

However, just over three years ago Kistler Aerospace filed for voluntary bankruptcy (Chapter 11) with $US600 million in debts but managed to emerge from bankruptcy proceedings in 2005.

Rocketplane Limited then purchased the company for an undisclosed sum earlier this year.

Further doubt over RocketplaneKistler ’s ability to deliver is demonstrated by the fact that the K-1 vehicle has never flown.

The grace period for dog registrations ends on August 31.

Dog owners need to register their animals without delay or they could face hefty fines.

Roxby Downs Council Works Officer Peter Keller said he was aware of a significant number of unregistered dogs in the community.

“Dog owners should comply with the Dog and Cat Management Act or they will be fined,” Mr Keller said.

From August 31 dog owners will face an expiation fee of $80 for each unregistered animal.

Options for the future

Ongoing vandalism of playgrounds is an ongoing concern for Council workers and parents alike, with above: torn shade sails at the Curdimurka Street playground, and below: a Wheelie bin that had been broken and placed over a drink fountain at the Pine Crescent playground recently.

Vandals target playgrounds R oxby Downs Council Officers are concerned about ongoing vandalism in our children’s playgrounds.

In recent months the Hermit Street, Curdimurka Street and Pine Crescent playgrounds have all been vandalised.

In each instance the equipment had to be repaired or replaced.

At the Pine Crescent senior play-

ground a wheelie bin was ripped from its stand and jammed over a nearby drinking fountain, wasting a substantial amount of water and costing around $100 to replace.

“Wheelie bins are a constant target for vandals,” Roxby Downs Council Works Officer Peter Keller said.

Shade sails at the Curdimurka Street Playground were also torn and Council estimated the cost of repair at several hundred dollars.

The council now makes monthly checks of community playgrounds to ensure the safety of children.

Mr Keller said destruction of community property, broken glass and rubbish are amongst the things they are looking out for.

“It’s just another example of the council being forced to spend money on repairs that would be better spent improving facilities for the community.”

The future governance of Andamooka took centrestage at the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association (AP OM A) general me e ting la st Thursday.

APOMA’s chairperson, Pat Katnich, addressed the meeting and spoke of the need to plan for the town’s future with the impending expansion of the Olympic Dam Mine.

Ms Katnich put forward three possible models for the future governance of the town, which is currently administered by APOMA with some assistance from the Outback Areas Community Development Trust (OACDT).

The first option given to the meeting would be to continue with the current system unchanged – which does not allow APOMA any legal powers to raise revenue to carry out works in town.

A number of people in the crowd suggested voluntary monetary contributions would solve the revenue problem.

However, Ms Katnich replied that this option had been tried in the past with very little success.

The Monitor spoke with Ms Katnich after the meeting and she explained why voluntary contributions had failed.

“It would be great if everyone in town just said they would be happy to contribute a couple of hundred dollars each year to help run the town but we’ve tried that in the past and it just didn’t work,” she said.

“At a community meeting in 2004 the 150 people who attended made it clear they were comfortable paying a levy but they wanted it compulsory so everybody had to pay it.,” Ms Katnich said.

This second governance option would fall between the current administrative set-up and a local government or council model.

It would require legislative changes to the way the OACDT operates.

Any changes to the OACDT legislation would also apply to all unincorporated

areas of South Australia and not just Andamooka.

Andamooka is the largest town in the unincorporated region of South Australia and would drive any legislative change.

Ms Katnich said the ability to raise funds from within the town were crucial to the town’s future.

“Andamooka must be able to raise its own revenue so that we can carry out maintenance and improve the town,” she said.

“At the moment we have to rely on volunteers - which we can’t really keep doing – and cannot afford to pay professionals to carry out work. We need more funding because the town has outgrown the system,” she said.

The final option would be to form a local council.

Ms Katnich made it clear that if Andamooka embraced the council idea the town would most likely fall beneath the Roxby Downs Council as it was unlikely the SA government would support two council areas within 30km of each other.

All three options were hotly debated by the crowd with the positives and negatives of each system discussed.

Finally it was agreed a working party would be formed to compile a written report outlining the likely advantages and disadvantages of the three models.

The meeting also provided the opportunity to amend some items of the APOMA constitution.

“The APOMA constitution just needed to be updated to be relevant to the situation in 2006. It was written in 1992 and some of the clauses are no longer relevant,” Ms Katnich said.

The majority of the proposed clauses were swiftly accepted and carried but two were deferred until the Annual General Meeting on September 3.

Hot rock city Hot rock energy is being considered as a possible power alternative, and could become a focus in South Australia, according to recent reports.

The heat generating capacity of granites found in the Curnamona Craton region of the State would be studied as part of a continuing $100 million Renewable Energy Development Initiative (REDI).

The Centre for International Economics released a report last week which stated “hot rock” energy could generate 10 per cent of Australia’s electricity capacity.

In late July the Australian Government awarded funding to six renewable energy projects, under its $100 million REDI program.

Wakelin, said the Curnamona Craton’s Geothermal Resources project had been allocated nearly $2.5 million during Round Two of the REDI program.

“The Geothermal Resources project will seek to identify and map the granites in this region of South Australia,” Mr Wakelin said.

“It is anticipated the granites will generate heat and once an understanding of their heat-generating capacity and thermal conductivity has been established, the heating capacity will be mapped to assess the energy potential,” he said.

“REDI’s focus on research and development and commercialisation of renewable technologies fills a niche in Australian Government support for the sector and compliments other renewable energy and low emissions programs.

Responsible Police News pet ownership

At the second meeting of the Pet Management Sub Committee, residents met to discuss the issue of pet management in Roxby Downs.

The concern was universally expressed that with the next expansion of the Olympic Dam Mine looming, there would be a significant rise in the pet population of Roxby Downs.

Those who attended the meeting agreed it would be important to update pet management policies before the expansion took place.

Julie Beinke has two cats - “Bella” and “Scarlet” - and one dog.

Ms Beinke said all of her animals have been desexed and she believed the policies which govern dog and cat management should be the same.

Another pet owner, Gavin Ibbert, said he has 2 registered and desexed dogs.

“I encourage people to be responsible pet owners so we can all enjoy our pets and our wildlife as well,” he said.

Roy Ebdon kept a cat in Roxby Downs for 14 years and said he believed that all cats could be controlled to protect the native birds. However, to control cats, Mr Ebdon said, they had to be contained within a house otherwise they would roam and hunt for food.

Also present at the meeting was Reece Pedler, who has kept two desexed cats indoors and said he supported cat confinement to protect wildlife.

The following are the main incidents coming to the attention of the Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera Police in the last week.

Police received a report on Wednesday, August 16, concerning a serious criminal trespass on residential premises in Andamooka sometime in the last few months. Several firearms, a quantity of ammunition and safe containing items of value were stolen.

A Police Crime Scene Examiner attended from Port Augusta to collect forensic evidence to assist in the investigation. Police are particularly concerned about the theft of the firearms and ask that anyone with information contact their local police station.

The Woomera police, Woomera CFS and Glendambo CFS attended a gas leak at a Glendambo Roadhouse when a gas tank shut off valve failed to operate on Thursday, August 17.

The incident was managed by the CFS who remained at the scene until the arrival of maintenance workers from Adelaide.

A youth from Roxby Downs was reported by police for driving in a manner dangerous following a vehicle collision on Pioneer Drive on Friday, August 18. There were no injuries and only minor damage to the man’s vehicle reported in the accident.

In an unrelated matter on the same day an 18-yearold man from Roxby Downs was reported for supplying liquor to minors. The liquor was seized by police.

Police reported a 26-year-old man from Laura for driving while exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol on Saturday, August 19. Police will allege that the man’s blood alcohol concentration reading was 0.161.

A youth from Roxby Downs was reported by police for illegally using a motor vehicle on Saturday, August 19.

A second youth from Roxby Downs was also reported for illegal use the following day. These reports follow police investigations into a spate of vehicle offences which occurred in Roxby Downs during June and July 2006.

Investigations into these matters are continuing.

Police reported an 18-year-old Roxby Downs man for disorderly behaviour as a result of an investigation into an incident that occurred in Roxby Downs in January 2006.

Gas leak in Glendambo A Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) shut down the BP Service Station in Glendambo last Thursday.

Just before 9am an attendant telephoned the local Country Fire Service (CFS) to attend the potentially dangerous situation.

Upon arrival, the CFS volunteers extinguished all possible ignition sources and secured the area immediately around the 7500 litre, bullet-shaped, LPG cylinder.

Captain of the Woomera CFS Graeme Austin, said there was little work to do when they arrived.

“By the time we got to Glendambo there was very little gas left in the cylinder because most of the gas inside had already escaped,” he said.

Mr Austin said three members of the Woomera Emergency Service attended, along with two CFS personnel.

Roxby Downs CFS volunteers were called out to watch over Woomera while the Woomera team were controlling the situation in Glendambo.

Using special the software the program could calculate the approximate blood alcohol level of the persons after they had partaken of the number and type of drinks specified by the participant.

Most people who participated were surprised at the amount of time it took for the alcohol to leave the system.

Family Matters Imagine if you were the richest person on earth!

Imagine having so much money that you couldn’t possibly spend it on yourself (or your family) in your life time!

On a lesser scale, imagine if you had more money than the biggest ever Lotto win!

I’m sure we’ve all got a wonderful plan mapped out on what we would do if we won Lotto. Some of my work colleagues and I have had a bit of fun discussing what we would do if our work lotto numbers came up.

For many, winning lotto is some far off dream, but my wife and I know a couple in Queensland who actually won $10 million dollars on lotto!

Yep! 10 million dollars! But imagine if you had more than $10 BILLION dollars!

Well! We all know Bill Gates is the richest person on earth who is estimated to be worth over $54 billion dollars! It’s hard to imagine someone having so much money, but that’s what he is worth.

I don’t know about you, but I find it incredibly difficult to contemplate being a millionaire, let alone a multi-billionaire like Bill Gates!

And although I have never met Bill Gates, (and probably never will) I can’t help but admire the way he manages his wealth.

I’m sure he drives a much better car than my 2006 VZ Holden Commodore and I’m sure he owns and wears more suits than I do (he’d have to I guess because I don’t own a suit). But I can’t help admire what Bill Gates does with the billions he owns.

I say that because I admire people who look to do good things for people without expecting anything in return.

I admire those who have the capacity to bring about change in the lives of others and are actually doing it and Bill Gates is certainly one of those people.

In a previous edition of the Monitor I wrote an article that drew a wonderful wave of response from a number of Monitor readers. The article spoke of orphan African children who had never seen a balloon in their life.

I talked about how lovely it would be if our world cared for each other before profit, power and progress.

Well, guess what?

If you haven’t heard, Bill gates is doing what a lot of world leaders aren’t…and that is caring for people who are unable to care for themselves.

Recently, the largest AIDS Summit (at Toronto) opened with a call for the disease to be wiped out by 2031, and the world’s wealthiest man vowed to spur the fight against the killer of 25 million people.

At the Summit, Bill Gates pledged US$500 million to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria diseases that can be cured by the right funding.

By the end of 2005, 40.3 million people were living with HIV/AIDS, including 17.5 million women and 2.3 million children under the age of 15.

There are obviously many other diseases around the world that could be cured by the right amount of funding but hopefully Bill Gates’ financial contribution, (and the determination of the HIV/AIDS Summit at Toronto) will rid our world of the horrible disease that killed 3.1 million people world wide last year.

Australia plays a leadership role in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Asia Pacific region and, through its Global HIV/AIDS initiative, has committed a total of $600 million from 2000 to 2010 to combat the HIV pandemic.

But on a local level, we too can contribute to the Global initiative to rid the world of HIV/AIDS by 2031.

Andamooka pipeline

The eagerly anticipated Andamooka water pipeline project is approaching completion.

Involving the South Australian Government, WMC and BHP Billiton, local indigenous groups, contractors from Andamooka, Roxby Downs and Adelaide, as well as townspeople getting the project this far has required a huge effort.

The water feeding the pipeline originally comes from the Great Artesian Basin but is desalinated at BHP Billiton’s plant on the Borefield Road at Olympic Dam. Andamooka Progress and Opal Miner’s Association (APOMA) committee member, Mike Freeman, said locals donated thousands of hours of volunteer labour, which saved approximately $200,000.

Mr Freeman said the idea of a water pipeline from the desalination plant to Andamooka had been around since the mid-1980’s when Roxby Downs was first established.

Previously Andamooka had to source water from Woomera when rainwater or the dams ran out.

“Putting in the pipeline should certainly reduce the cost of water in Andamooka because it won’t have to be carted so far,” he said.

“It’s been a very different task for everybody who has been involved. All of the groups and people involved have been very cautious with the project because we want to make sure everyone is happy in the end,” Mr Freeman said.

The project’s first step was to consult with local indigenous elders, who generously gave permission to proceed.

Next, APOMA wrote a grant proposal for the SA Government, which was presented to the Minister for Infrastructure, Patrick Conlon.

A grant of $400,000 was then given by the state government to the Outback Areas Community Development Trust (OACDT) to start work on the pipeline.

Construction of the trench then started, using the APOMA grader to cut through the soil while volunteers removed stones or debris which could foul the pipe when it was laid.

The pipe itself is Class 9 PVC 100mm piping and 4500 lengths arrived in Andamooka in mid 2005, which were then laid and the trench was carefully backfilled with environmental consideration in mind.

A high quality shipping container was then sourced and placed in Andamooka to house the dispenser units and the UV water treatment equipment.

Mr Freeman said he wanted to thank everybody who had been involved in the project for their efforts and all that needed to be finalised was the legal paperwork and then the water could be turned on.

Spring flowers in the Outback The Cancer Council, Australia’s flagship fundraiser, Daffodil Day, takes place on Friday, August 25, with all proceeds going directly to initiatives in cancer research, education, information, advocacy and patient support services.

The Cancer Council South Australia has recently appointed Gabrielle Overton to the position of Relationship Development Coordinator to work with community supporters across the state.

R e ce ntl y, G ab r i el l e c au g ht u p with former neighbour and journalist, Jamie-Lee Oldfield, to explore ways to help involve Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam residents in the Daffodil Day fundraiser.

The Cancer Council provides a range of services accessible to all South Australians, including The Cancer Council Helpline and affordable accommodation for people from regional areas undergoing treatment in Adelaide.

These services are made possible through sales of Daffodil Day merchandise - which will be available at the Roxby Downs Post Office and Woolworths.

Roxby Downs Council Development Officer, Michelle Hales, spoke with Gabrielle last week and will coordinate

an opportunity for interested members of the community to meet Gabrielle.

At the meeting Gabrielle will explain the vital work being done by The Cancer Council to reduce the impact of cancer, particularly in regional areas.

The date of the meeting will be published in an upcoming edition of The Monitor.

As a community-based non government organisation, The Cancer Council depends largely on the generosity of South Australians through donations and volunteering to maintain its services.

Whether you have had a personal experience of cancer, been touched by the disease through family members or friends, or just want to make a real difference to the lives of others, all volunteers are welcome.

Volunteer branches right across the state are involved with fundraising for The Cancer Council, including national events and their own home-grown fundraisers.

Examples are entering teams for Relay for Life, whooping it up at at a Girls Night In or perhaps turning the town pink for Pink Ribbon Day.

News in brief The Alcohol And Substance Abuse Partnership met on August 10.

The discussion included feedback from the Police, Roxby Downs Health Service, Outback Health Screenings, interested community members and a representative from Drug and Alcohol Services SA (DASSA).

The Partnership recognises the excellent work being done by the Roxby Downs Liquor Licensing Precinct Management Plan, Roxby Roadsafe, DASSA. However it was acknowledged that the Partnership has a role to play in raising community awareness about the risks and side effects associated with alcohol and substance abuse and in lobbying for more locally based counselling and support services.

A major concern is that people seeking help for their problems are unable to access the level of local support they need straight away and have to wait weeks for assistance.

The local community is not exposed to South Australian based commercial television and radio and is therefore not being exposed to State Government health awareness campaigns like Alcohol – Go easy.

The Partnership also recognised a need to run an awareness campaign for both employees and employers.

The Partnership identified a list of actions required to prepare for the next meeting which will be held in early September.

These include identifying key national health awareness dates like Drug Action Week that can be used to gather promotional material from, gathering of statistics and developing a resources list, tap into research reports recently produced by Flinders University.

At the next meeting the Partnership will identify actions that will result in some short term runs on the board.

Community Studies with the CFS W

hen Roxby Downs Area School student Matt Lewis signed up to volunteer with the CFS he did not realise he could use the experience to gain points towards his South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).

Mr Lewis (aged 17), who hopes to become a fire-fighter when he leaves school, was delighted when he realised the work he was doing could count for up to two SACE points.

“You can achieve SACE units for a range of things,” Years 7 to 12 at the Roxby Downs Area School Assistant Principal Joslyn Fox said.

“Music and drama exams, scouts, volunteering with the CFS or SES, all of those things can get SACE recognition.”

Mr Lewis is enjoying his time at the CFS and is learning a whole range of skills including Hazmat training, use of breathing apparatus, hose handling and

basic ladder skills.

He particularly enjoys training with the fire-fighters and would encourage fellow students to follow his example and sign up as a volunteer.

“The CFS is a great organisation, very committed. If you’re ever in a jam, they’ll help you out,” Mr Lewis said.

Captain of the Roxby Downs CFS, Brett Atkins said at the recent Volunteering Partnership meeting that he would like to see more young people becoming members.

“The average age of a volunteer is much older,” Mr Atkins said.

“I think it’s good when they come in young. People need to know that the courses offered by the CFS are nationally accredited. It can really help with their career prospects.”

The Arts and Culture Forum is working towards the publication of an online artists register on www.roxbydowns.com.

The Forum has set about the task of gathering information from local artists.

Local parents, unsung heroes Early in the morning or late in the evening, on weekends and holidays, a legion of unsung heroes are volunteering at our schools.

No task is too small. No call goes unheeded.

Whenever there is need, you will find them.

They are, of course, the parents.

From reading with the children, to refereeing on sports days, this band of worthy volunteers is always on hand to lend their support, and our schools would be much poorer places without them.

St Barbara’s Parish School has some wonderful parents that volunteer on a regular basis.

They work in the uniform shop, help out with the Learning Assisted Program, man the school library and pitch in with working bees.

The school read-a-thon that wound up this term was run and coordinated by parental volunteers.

Reading Recovery and Religious Education Coordinator Cynthia Thompson said parent volunteers were a gift to the school community.

“From driving the school bus and making resources, right through to listening to the children reading and working with them on a one-on-one basis, their invaluable help enhances what we as a school can offer our children,” she said.

The Roxby Downs Area School’s Parents and Friends Committee is another wonderful example of these tireless parents at work.

Run completely by volunteers, Parents and Friends raised $10,000 last year, which was put back into the school.

The funds are used to supply things the school might not otherwise be able to purchase.

Playground equipment, gardening supplies and seating are just some of the items the Parents and Friends

Committee have supplied in recent years.

President of the Committee Avril Luke said she believed what the Parents and Friends do was really important.

“It’s about putting something back, supporting the school that my three children attend,” Mrs Luke said.

Angela Lamb, who makes time to read with son Matthew’s class at RDAS every week, agreed.

“I think it’s good to get involved in their schooling,” Mrs Lamb said.

“It makes the kids feel really important when their mums come in and help.”

Volunteering - a youth focussed revival

Robert D Putman in his ground breaking work Bowling Alone analysed over 500,000 interviews and surveys across a 100 year period.

His work clearly identifies that, since the 1970’s, there has been a dramatic decline in the amount of volunteer participation and development in our communities.

Every category researched by Putman and his team showed significant declines of participation in community organisations.

The study showed there was no one main cause to this decline, and was attributed mostly to generational change.

One of the areas attributed to the decline in volunteer numbers was the slow steady replacement of the long civic generation - those aged in the 60 plus age bracket.

“Their less involved children (25 - 45 Year olds) and grand children – has been a powerful factor that might account for perhaps half of the overall decline”, the report said.

Other causes included the effect of electronic entertainment – above all television, plus the increases of pressure of time and money placed on today’s two income families.

The decline was not confined to any specific group - lower socio economic communities and privileged, affluent and well educated communities had experienced a volunteer decline as well as many religious, education, sporting, professional or social organisations.

So how are these trends reflected in Roxby Downs?

Community Development Consultant Ray Goldie said the greatest challenge was the lack of a retired older population, who were often the backbone of volunteering elsewhere.

“Retirees virtually do not exist in Roxby Downs,” Mr Goldie said “The community has a high proportion of two career families living busy lives which are time poor and money focussed,” Mr Goldie said.

He said electronic entertainment and the decline in volunteer numbers could be a significant factor in the local community, where the population was young and electronically and digitally savvy.

“Again it is Roxby Downs’ uniqueness, which in this case works against it, that exacerbates the never ending search for more volunteers.”

“The fact that the town has so many volunteers is a tribute to the community, but that does not deny the fact that those in the role need support,” Mr Goldie said.

Putman’s report states trends of volunteering opportunities will change to fit with today’s lifestyle and the needs of a modern day community.

“Maybe that’s where our focus should be, nurturing, training and developing a volunteer culture in our young,” Mr Goldie said.

“Now that’s an aim that would work in Roxby Downs favour.”

Sporting volunteers This week The Monitor has set aside a page dedicated to the volunteers who make Roxby Downs the vibrant community it is.

Like many groups or activities in town, sporting clubs are almost exclusively run by volunteer labour and provide youngsters and adults alike with a healthy pastime.

Many of the town’s volunteers contribute to a number of groups at one time - one of these people is Mel Katzorke who helps out both swimming and junior netball clubs.

Mrs Katzorke explained people who volunteered never expect to be thanked for their efforts.

“Most of us do it for our children. It’s good for us to know that by making sure the sporting clubs are running our children have a place to go which encourages healthy activity and also keeps them occupied,” she said.

With so many young people living in Roxby Downs and participating in sporting activities, a corresponding number of volunteers are required.

“Overall there would probably be 30 parents who help out to run netball. There are 16 sides, minis and about 20 coaches, with at least 10 umpires. Some of the older juniors volunteer their time as well.”

“In the swimming club there are three or four coaches working Monday to Thursday during the week and six or so other helpers. But when the carnival is on I’d say there are at least 20 people helping out,” she said.

Mrs Katzorke said she supported the latest BHP Billiton volunteer initiative – the Matched Giving Program.

“Many of us involved in the sports clubs put in a lot of hours and it’s very encouraging for BHP Billiton to be doing its bit to help out,” she said.

the efforts of its dedicated members and followers.

Brett Atkins is president of the Desert Karts Club and also Captain of the Roxby Downs Country Fire Service.

“All of the members of our club volunteer their time to help out the club in one way or another,” he said.

“But without them we simply wouldn’t be able to have a club,” he said.

Unlike other sporting clubs which use public facilities, the Desert Kart Club (and Dirt Circuit and MotoX) have to maintain their own facilities.

Volunteers are needed to head out onto the racing track to grade and then roll the track to ensure it is suitable for racers to compete on.

During the recent State Kart Championships held in Roxby Downs Mr Atkins said he only managed to sleep a handful of hours between the Wednesday prior to the event and the Monday when it was finished. He even slept overnight at the track one night.

Mr Atkins said despite the effort required to host the State Championships, the club had its sights set on hosting the National Championship.

“At the moment we’re also building a shed at the course and we hope that one of the football clubs would be interested in using the facilities, when they’re finished, as their clubrooms,” he said.

Last year the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) helped around 50,000 South Australians and landed at Olympic Dam 117 times.

That means around three times a week the RFDS fly into Roxby Downs to help people in the area.

The RFDS provide an air ambulance service to Port Augusta and Adelaide and also transport specialist health professionals to Roxby Downs.

“We facilitate the provision of a range of allied health services by flying in health professionals,” General Manager of Public Relations and Marketing, John Tobin said.

The great work the RFDS do is supported on the ground by their local auxiliary groups. Mr Tobin was full of praise for their hard working volunteers.

“The Auxiliary groups are absolutely critical to the RFDS,” Mr Tobin said.

“They not only raise funds, they provide a grass roots level link to the community. We just cannot speak highly enough of them.”

The Roxby Downs branch of the RFDS Auxiliary has been raising money and awareness for nearly twenty years, and has been very successful.

Last year, twenty auxiliary groups across the state raised over half a million dollars. $100,000 of that came from Roxby Downs.

The money goes towards purchasing new aircrafts and medical equipment.

President of the RFDS Auxiliary in Roxby Downs, Marie McCormack,

attributed their success to the community.

“Roxby people are so giving,” Mrs McCormack said.

“It is easy to raise money up here because the community is so generous.”

Mrs McCormack, who has been affiliated with the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary since its inception, has four very personal reasons for supporting the Flying Doctors.

“They have saved my husband Leo’s life twice, my son’s and my brother’s. I just love them,” Mrs McCormack said.

On September 16 the RFDS Auxiliary are hosting their annual golf day and auction.

The goods are already rolling in.

White goods, televisions, toolboxes, a Melbourne Football jumper signed

by Todd Viney and a Simpsons collage are amongst the items that have already been donated.

The Auxiliary invites everyone to attend.

The nine hole Ambrose Golf Competition will tee off at 8.30am and the auction will commence at 1pm.

Dinner will be served at 6pm with meals costing $10 for adults and $2 for children.

A grand fireworks display is also planned, followed by more auctioning.

So come on Roxby, dig in and support the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service.

National Nurse Re-entry Scheme Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) is seeking applications from eligible nurses for scholarships under the Nurse Scholarship Program: Continuing Professional Education Scheme for Rural and Remote Nurses and National Nurse Re-entry Scheme.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SCHEME FOR RURAL AND REMOTE NURSES This Scheme is available for both Registered/Division 1 and Enrolled/ Division 2 nurses to undertake postgraduate Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses and for attendance at conferences (as presenters or delegates) held within Australia.

Scholarships are worth up to $10,000 each for up to two years of study. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents who have a current practicing certificate and they must be able to demonstrate that they are practicing in a rural or remote area of Australia.

NATIONAL NURSE RE-ENTRY SCHEME This Scheme is for both Registered/ Division 1 and Enrolled/Division 2 nurses whose registration has lapsed and have not practiced for five years or more. This is a national program and targets all nurses including rural and metropolitan applicants. Scholarships are worth up to $6,000 each for up to one year of study and are aimed at applicants intending to undertake, or are currently undertaking, an accredited or approved Australian nursing program or course that will enable them to re-enter the nursing/midwifery workforce in an Australian State or Territory.

The Roxby Downs Health Service has been boosted with the addition of two new staff members.

Gaye Smith is now an additional Community Health Nurse and will work alongside Sue Houlson in a part-time role.

Mrs Smith will be serving the communities of Roxby Downs and Woomera in her new position.

One of her main duties will be to run the immunisation clinic at the Health Service one morning every week to ensure the community has access to an effective immunisation program.

The immunisation clinic will be open on Tuesday from 9am until midday.

A Roxby Downs resident for the past 12 months Mrs Smith said she was also a young mother.

“I understand both personally and professionally how hard it can be to move into a new town and raise children,” she said.

While Mrs Smith might be new in her role as Community Health Nurse she is not new to nursing, having worked in both Roxby Downs and Woomera clinics since last October.

“I was working in the Roxby Downs clinic when this wonderful opportunity came up and I decided to apply and was lucky enough to pick up what should be a challenging position,” she said.

“The difference between working as a community health nurse and working in a clinic is that I’ll be working towards prevention of health problems through promotion and education programs, instead of clinic work where you’re treating established health problems,” she said.

Before moving to Roxby Downs, Mrs Smith said she had worked as a nurse in Townsville for nine years and also spent two-and-a-half-years working in Melbourne.

“As a nurse I’ve assumed some pretty challenging roles in the past and have lived in some very different towns with diverse lifestyles,” she said.

One of Mrs Smith’s first initiatives will be to start a young mothers walking group, where the mothers would meet once a week and walk with their children and prams.

The benefits of the program would be to improve health through exercise, with a dose of socialising thrown in for good measure. On August 2 the Reserve Bank raised official interest rates a quarter of a per cent to six per cent, adding around $35 dollars a month to the average Australian mortgage repayment.

Prime Minister John Howard was philosophical about the rise.

“I certainly have today accepted, regrettable though it is, that there is a strong economic case for the interest rate rise,” Mr Howard told ABC television.

“I don’t like it, I’m sorry about it. But I don’t think the bank had any alternative.”

Australian Business Limited say home owners in New South Wales will be the hardest hit by the rate hike.

The average home loan in NSW is $257,000. The August interest rate rise will add $43 a month to a loan of that size.

In South Australia the average home loan is $176,400, this equates to an increase of $29 a month.

On August 2 the Sydney Morning Herald reported that a poll taken by Fairfax’s Property website, Domain. com.au, found that 45 per cent of people would delay buying a property because of the interest rate rise and around 30 per cent would struggle with the increased repayments.

For Roxby Downs residents the rate rise means a home loan of $350,000 will cost around $56 a month more, but local real estate agents feel the increase will have little effect on the local market.

“Our market is driven by the mine’s performance, and by investors looking for a high rate of return,” Lin Andrews Real Estate Sales Executive, Lorraine Aubrey

said.

“Due to the shortage of housing in Roxby Downs we have high rents, which means a high rate of return for the investor.”

Ali Webber of Wardle Real Estate also feels that the interest rate hike is unlikely to effect area sales, but has noticed a recent swing away from investors to owner occupiers.

“If people want to live here and they cannot get a rental property, they have to buy. It’s as simple as that,” Ms Webber said, adding that homes without leases sell more quickly and fetch a higher price.

“If anything the interest rate hike will affect the upper end of the market. People who were looking at properties worth $400,000 might have to settle for something priced at $350,000.”

Managing Director at Raine and Horne, Wayne Lawson, has also noticed a slow down in investors buying in Roxby Downs.

Mr Lawson attributes this cooling off to skyrocketing property prices in the area.

“The expectation of vendors has become very high,” Mr Lawson said.

“Therefore the yield of return has come down, making investing in property here less attractive.”

That said, Mr Lawson agrees that the interest rate rise will have little effect on the local real estate market.

“Interest rates don’t affect investors, the biggest sales in Australia happened when the interest rates were 17%.

For the market to fall, supply must exceed demand, and that isn’t going to happen any time soon.”

Looking for a way to save on homeowner’s insurance and ensure the safety of your family and possessions? One quick, inexpensive way to do this is to invest in smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

Due to the large number of home firerelated deaths each year and advances in technology, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are progressively being offered at more affordable rates.

Now that you can afford to protect yourself, what kind of smoke detector should you get? Well, there is a wide variety on the market today, but the most common categories are battery-operated, hardwired and “hot-linked.” There are pros and cons to each. Installing battery-operated smoke detectors is usually very simple. All it takes is a screwdriver or drill, a ninevolt battery and about 10 minutes. Most battery-operated smoke detectors need to be checked every few weeks to ensure that the battery is still working, but beyond that, nothing major needs to be done to maintain them. After battery-operated designs come the hard-wired detectors.

These are generally more expensive and, depending on the style, may require some minor electrical work. Although they do not have the problem of a dying battery, they could fail if a fire starts when your power is out or if your power goes out as a result of an electrical fire. Finally, the “hot-linked” category refers to systems that actually connect to your local fire department and are usually offered though various commercial security companies.

They are hard-wired detectors that con-

nect to an alarm system within the home, often in conjunction with a burglar alarm, and contact the authorities when the alarm is triggered.

Once you have decided what type of smoke detector to purchase, you should find out the basic differences among models. Some models detect ionization only. While they are good at detecting high-flame fires, they may not detect smokier fires for a while, increasing the risk of smoke inhalation. These models are generally the cheapest you will find at a given store and are often handed out by fire departments during fire safety promotions. Photoelectric models spot smoky fires well, but fail to detect high-flame fires as quickly. How do you solve the dilemma?

Find a model that uses both ionization and photoelectric detection. Some even have carbon monoxide detection built in for added security.

In addition to installing smoke detectors throughout your home, you should boost your safety by placing fire extinguishers in several rooms in the house, particularly the kitchen, any rooms with fireplaces and the bedroom hallway. These can be mounted on the wall and should be checked periodically to ensure they are still fully functional.

Save on your homeowner’s insurance and help protect your family and possessions. Install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers around your home and check them often!

Family reunites for 100th birthday Roxby Downs residents Shane and Tina Foster, (aka Crusty and Twisty), along with Stephanie Foster and Iain and Mitchell Boehm headed to Bunbury, Western Australia to reunite with family from all over Australia to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs Lillian Davies (Tina’s Maternal Grandmother).

The reunion brought together five generations of family for Mrs Lillian Davies’ 100th birthday at the Ocean Star Nursing Home in Bunbury on July 27, 2006.

“We have been planning this day for the last ten years, we all knew she would make the milestone achievement and she has been waiting for that telegram from the Queen forever,” Tina Foster said.

Gran Gran as she is affectionately known by family and friends celebrated her birthday with daughter and son-inlaw, Richard and Betty Hodges, her four grandchildren and their partners, eight great grandchildren and their partners plus three great great children.

Great great grandchild number four is eagerly awaited at the end of August.

Mrs Davies’ telegrams and cards from friends and dignitaries including the Queen of England and Prime Minister John Howard were read out by son-in-law Richard Hodges.

Born on July 27, 1906, in Wales in the UK, she immigrated to Australia with her daughter’s family in the late 1960’s.

After many years in Australia she became an Australian Citizen in 1999 at the age of 93.

Gran Gran can now add centenarian to her list of achievements.

ith the Royal Adelaide Show fast approaching, parents – especially those with small children – should be advised to look at what arrives in their children’s showbags.

The Office of Consumer and Business Affairs (OCBA) has already requested seven items be removed from showbags following an annual inspection.

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Jennifer Rankine said the offending items were deemed dangerous to some users.

“Every item in every showbag has been thoroughly checked and it is pleasing that just seven items were found to be hazardous,” she said.

“OCBA’s regular checks of showbags have meant that operators have become more aware of their responsibility to supply products that are safe, but inspectors will continue each year to ensure that no items slip through the cracks,” she said.

Most of the offending items – including a “Bob the Builder” tool belt, power tool set, musical instrument and a beanbag – were banned because they posed a choking risk to young children.

“I urge parents to look closely at the contents of bags and keep in mind the recommended ages for products. It is also wise to supervise children when they play with new toys to ensure they are being used properly,” she said.

Toys offered as prizes at Sideshow Alley are yet to be checked but OCBA will continue its inspections during the Show.

The bus zone on Richardson Place is being actively policed, as bus owners and drivers have become increasingly concerned about the large number of people who take it for granted that they can park in this area. Please be aware that there has been an increase in the expiation fee, which has gone up from $47 to $73, and remember that this is a bus zone at all times.

Dog Registration Dog registrations are now due and payable. Reminder notices are being sent out to current registered owners to 30th of June 2006. All dogs aged three months or over must be registered with your local Council. The purpose of this is to provide quick and easy identification of your dog, should he or she be found wondering, or become lost. The registered owner must be a person aged 16 years or over, and that person must notify Council within 72 hours if the dog is moved to a different premises, dies is or missing or the ownership of the dog is transferred to another person.

Vandalism Council has noted an increase in vandalism within the township. Council urges all residents to report instances of vandalism to the Police and Council. This is your community and your rates are being wasted by these types of action so your help is essential.

New owners old traditions Tandales Hair & Beauty has changed ownership but the new owners, the Spillman family, will continue to provide Roxby Downs and the surrounding region with professional hairdressing and impeccable service.

The Roxby Downs Cultural Precinct is hosting an exhibition by South African artist Annemarie Beukes this month.

‘From SA to SA’ showcases Ms Beukes private collection and will delight art lovers of all ages.

Ms Beukes moved to Roxby Downs two months ago when her husband began work at Olympic Dam and has been very impressed with the town so far.

“Roxby Downs is great, there is so much to do with the kids and the community has been really supportive.”

Ms Beukes, who studied at KwaZulu Natal University, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a teaching degree.

She specialises in graphics, etchings and lithographs and also enjoys creating figure drawings and portraits.

She is planning to offer art classes in her Roxby Downs home.

“I love to teach,” Ms Beukes said.

“We will start with the elements of art and then move on to pastels, oils, acrylics, drawing, etching and pottery.”

Country Arts SA Arts Development Officer Rodney Mitchell was very impressed with Ms Beukes’ work.

“It’s great to have Annemarie on board,” Mr Mitchell said.

“We were very impressed with the initiative she has shown, she has taken on a lot of the organisation of the exhibition herself. It is also great that the Cultural Precinct was able to offer her a place at such short notice.”

Psychic to visit Roxby Downs Visiting Roxby Downs on Saturday, September 2, will be Amanda De Warren – one of Australia’s best known and sought after mediums.

Amanda, who writes a column every month for Take 5 Magazine, will be performing two 2-hour shows during the day where she promises to accurately channel figures from the afterlife for audience members.

This tour is titled “Messages from Beyond” and will see Amanda travel all over the country.

“I love my job because I feel like I help people and also get the chance to travel. I’m really looking forward to going to Roxby Downs because most of the time I’m asked to do shows in big cities.”

“Unfortunately I won’t have the time to do any private channellings while I’m in town but people can call to do phone channellings if they are interested,” she said.

Amanda explained to The Monitor how she became a medium.

“I always had these feelings about things when I was growing up but ignored them and they went away until I was 39, when I witnessed the traumatic passing of a friend.”

“When my friend died I felt my grandfather was around, trying to guide me,” she said.

After that, Amanda said she visited a Spiritual Church and found she was able to very accurately channel those in the afterlife.

As well as operating as a medium for people, Amanda also performs animal communications, something which must have helped in her previous profession.

“Until my friend died I was a veterinary nurse and worked with Steve Irwin at Australia’s Zoo and Dreamworld too.”

“I’m, as far as I know, the only person in the world who can do animal communications and medium work as well,” she said.

“For me it’s not about the money but helping people and I’ve been told by plenty of clients that the work I do is life changing,” she said.

Amanda De Warren’s Messages from Beyond shows will be performed in the Leisure Centre’s function room on Saturday, September 2. The first show will be from 11am – 1pm, while the second show will run from 2 – 4pm.

Tickets are $35 and will be available at the door.

New million-dollar fund set to boost arts in SA S outh Australian small businesses and arts organisations have a million-dollar incentive to form new partnerships, thanks to the SA Premier’s Arts Partnership Fund.

The Fund, being launched on 17 August, is a partnership between the State Government, the Australia Business Arts Foundation and Harris Scarfe.

“This is an innovative program that makes it easy for small-to-medium businesses to partner the arts, where the Fund will double any new financial commitment that a small business makes to an arts organisation, up to $10,000,” Premier Mike Rann said.

“The Fund will make our local arts scene more buoyant, lively and creative.

“This Fund is the first of its kind in Australia, and brings together small to medium-sized businesses and the arts community in a way that promises to provide tangible benefits for both sectors.

“Firms can now partner an arts company in the knowledge that the value of their contributions will be matched, dollar-for-dollar,

by the Fund.”

The Fund will benefit arts and cultural organisations like Urban Myth Theatre of Youth, through their partnership with Designer Direct.

Artistic director Glenn Hayden said partnerships between business and the arts at the local level made a lot of sense.” “…we welcome this new initiative with enthusiasm,” Mr Hayden said.

The SH ORTS Film Festival will also benefit, through its new partnership with The Prairie Hotel in Parachilna.

Shor t s co ordinator Natasha Phillips said the Prairie Hotel had enjoyed a long association with Australian film making.

“I was acutely aware of the contribution that The Prairie Hotel and its proprietors had made to the SA and national film industry as an iconic destination for film-makers.

Sometimes that’s all we need. Time to consider. Artists know that. So do Engineers. So do Hard Rock Miners.

Time to take a step back and give your brain time to process information.

Then come the deadlines, immovable lines in the sand drawn by well meaning people to protect our tax money against fraud and ill-conceived plans.

We need to give these gate keepers time to organise their schedules and meet enough times for them to feel confident in making decisions.

All very well, but let’s take that process back to where it starts.

What happens in the community when someone has a bright idea? How do we inspire others to join in a team?

Just recently I had the great pleasure of sitting around a table with a few people some would regard as, local heroes. It was a meeting of the Volunteering Partnership.

It was held at the Council Conference Room under the gaze of one of Mendelssohn’s wonderful abstracts.

It was a goodly proportion of the people behind the not-for-profit organisations that do service work around Roxby Downs and the region. I won’t name the people round the table, but they know who they are.

BHPBilliton was there too. Viviane Lander outlined the workings of the Matched Giving Program which allows for registered not-for-profits to attract a subsidy based on the hours their BHPB employed volunteer works for the cause, or based on money they might raise.

People say Generation Y is more individualistic, more eclectic, more disengaged from politics and not interested in working unpaid to make a better, safer community.

Being a parent of a Generation X physiotherapist and a Generation Y animation freak I guess I’m probably too close to the action to be objective Even though Generation Y isn’t queuing up to volunteer for anything much, there are still young men and women - and older people too - who are proud to learn the ropes.

They are learning skills they can use to go put out fires, render first aid, do lights for Sheila Culf, rescue native animals, plan for a Bird Flu epidemic, work in a crèche, or to direct a children’s play. Amongst other things.

The Arts and Culture Forum had to make some quick decisions this week because a deadline approached, and now it is past.

We have decided to act to ask the Regional Arts Fund to support a Project to bring Cirkidz to Roxby Downs and Andamooka in 2007.

The Arts and Culture Forum is run by community volunteers with administrative support from Country Arts SA, the Roxby Downs Council and the Community Board.

Now that the August Round Deadline has come and gone, it’s time to step back and do some thinking.

We could think about when are we going to have a Festival next? What is it about a 20-year Anniversary in 2008? And what will we call it when it comes?

The big news this week is the Annemarie Beukes Exhibition: “SA to SA” at the Precinct Gallery, which runs through to September 9 - this is local art at its best.

Body for Life challengers lose 3.27 metres The Body for Life Challenge is finished and some very impressive results have been recorded.

Twenty challengers completed the program, losing 40.3 kilograms of body fat and 327.4 centimetres between them.

In first place was Jen Weckert, while Denise Trewartha came second and Sharon Cadzow came third.

Ms Weckert, who lost an impressive 36.8 centimetres, was blown away by her win.

“It’s been great.”

All players are welcome and nominations must be in by 10.30am.

Colts Under 12’s The under 12’s always provide some exciting football and this weeks match was no exception.

Everybody played extremely well, but one young man in particular stood out - Nick Hombsch (Bulldogs).

Nick has proven all year that he has great skills and this week was no exception but he is just like many of the under 12’s who continue to improve every week.

Thomas Schott had a great match and captained the Hawks along with Ed Sach.

Special mention must also go to the two girls who play every week.

Under 16’s In the under 16’s the Bulldogs were lucky to have two players back.

One player was Jake Bowden who returned from his suspension, while Adam “Boof” Warren returned from a shoulder injury.

The first quarter was a quiet affair and neither team making much impact on the scoreboard.

The Bulldogs coach must have really fired the boys up at quarter time because in the second quarter they kept the Hawks scoreless, while the doggies kicked a handful of goals.

From then on the Bulldogs dominated, with Nick Fernandez and a fill-in Josh Elliot doing a really good job in the back lines for the doggies.

Jack Hombsch who played also stood out and played an awesome game in the centre and swapping to centre half forward.

The match was outstanding and the grand final will be a match to watch.

The Roos and the Wolves look likely to play in the grand final this season and to watch them last Tuesday was awesome because it was a tight match.

At three-quarter time the Wolves led the Roos 31-30.

The last quarter was packed with some really good efforts. One involved Spencer Crafter-King who received the ball from a throw in and carried it all the way down the court and tried to jump over Greg Williams and just missed the hard lay up.

In the end the Wolves were too strong and got up by three points.
