Kokatha keen to connect WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

T

he Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation’s board of management is looking to strengthen relationships with Roxby Downs residents in the coming months.

A proposed community forum would be one of the first steps and would provide an opportunity for the board to engage with locals and address their concerns. In 2014 the Kokatha people, as the traditional owners, were successful in their Native Title claim over more than 33,807

square kilometres of land. The land – which includes the Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Purple Downs stations – had always been for private use but was officially closed to the public in November last year via a notice sent out to residents. A project has since been under way to convert the land into a pastoral area, with livestock already introduced. The Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation is responsible for upholding the native title rights and interests and operates in conjunction with the Kokatha Mula Nations Land Council. CONTINUED PAGE 4

ore than 100 cars and 350 ‘Bashers’ will stop at Woomera as part of the 28th annual SA Variety Bash next month.

The eight-day, 2142km drive from Port Lincoln to Clare will be held from August 6-13. It will reach Woomera on Thursday, August 11, when participants will have dinner at the Eldo Hotel. The Variety Bash is about rewarding fundraisers for their efforts while giving back to the local communities they visit. This year the Bash will present grants totalling nearly $150,000 throughout its outback adventure. Variety SA chief executive officer Mark McGill said it was through the generosity of the Bashers that his organisation was able to assist children throughout the state. “Without events like the Variety Bash we would not be able to help as many children in need,” he said. The SA Variety Bash has so far raised more than $34 million since its inception for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. After leaving Port Lincoln, the 2016 event will travel north through Coffin Bay and Smoky Bay to Billa Kalina and down through Woomera into Port Augusta before crossing through Crystal Brook and on to the finish line of Ennis Park, Clare. Finding a pot of gold WRITTEN BY ANNE-MARIE SEAGRIM

W

e are seeing many people who have no clue that they may have a small fortune sitting in old super funds and life insurance including income protection.

It has been an exciting time for us helping people claim back what is rightfully theirs. I thought I would share a short story about a WorkCover claim I recently signed off for a young guy who had injured his back at work and couldn’t work. He was referred in by a lawyer who had helped him with his claim. I assessed his overall situation and found that he had five lost super funds. I helped him find those lost supers and discovered he had income protection and total and permanent disability insurance, which he had absolutely no idea that he held, within one of his supers. He is now on 75 per cent of his old salary and, as you can imagine, he is pretty happy he was referred to us. Financial planning is not just about interest rates, it is about value and service and making sure our clients do not have any regrets. There is $16 billion of lost super funds and we love helping people find them. Give us a call on 1800 818 933 if you need help finding your old super funds.

Roxby’s solar plant proposal WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

R

oxby Downs could be home to one of the biggest solar power stations in the world by as early as 2018.

Australian infrastructure investor Lyon Group is proposing the construction of a 100-megawatt solar plant to be combined with a battery storage array of up to 40MW. The power station is set to be one of many across the country as part of the Kingfisher project – a finalist in the Australian Renewable Energy Agency funding round for large-scale solar initiatives. It would connect into the National Electricity Market and would run power into a line

that links with working mine sites, including Olympic Dam. It is understood the construction of the $300 million solar plant would create 100 jobs. According to a recent article on the Renew Economy website, Lyon Group’s David Green said the combination of power generation and storage meant the facility could serve two purposes simultaneously. “The battery component of these projects provides greater energy security and energy quality, load shifting and management of ramp rates which is critical for major energy users with large swing loads,” he said. “So our pipeline initially focuses on regional, high-energy use areas on the fringe of the electricity grid but is rapidly expanding into other areas.”

Lyon Group’s announcement comes at an opportune time as South Australian electricity prices begin to increase significantly following the closure of the Northern Brown Coal Power Station and the current maintenance work being done on the interconnector. BHP Billiton Olympic Dam asset president Jacqui McGill said the escalating prices and unreliability of power supplies had been a “significant concern” for the sustainability of the mining giant. Ms McGill said the company had been looking into its own ways of continuing sustainable operations through these trying times. “We have been working closely with the South Australian Government to find a resolution to this issue, and are grateful for their

intervention during this period of instability,” she said. “Throughout this challenging period, our team has done great work to safely reduce our energy use while continuing operations, with minimal impact to production.” According to Renew Economy, the Kingfisher initiative is just one of a number of large-scale solar projects being proposed for SA. Mr Green said the SA market was attractive because of its excellent solar resources and its high base load power prices, and it could also avoid costly upgrades of networks at the fringe of grid. “South Australia needs an answer to its renewable energy challenges, and we think our Kingfisher project is a big part of the energy solution for that state,” he added.

Mr Marks, who has been a part of the club for three years, has replaced Tony Harwood, who is set to leave town due to retirement. Mr Marks said there were going to

Kokatha Aboriginal Corp to host forum CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “We understand there have been concerns raised regarding access to Kokatha land for recreational purposes,” said Kokatha Mula Nations Land Council general manager Bill Ryan. “It is not intended for any excessive restrictions to be enforced. Roxby residents are welcome to access the land on the condition that responsibility for the care of the land, infrastructure and livestock is maintained. “Of course we would also ask that the privacy of the residents of the stations is also respected.” Mr Ryan said steps had already been taken to begin building strong relationships with Roxby Downs and surrounding areas affected by the pastoral leases. Meetings have taken place between Mr Ryan, BHP Billiton’s Chad Menzies, Senior Sergeant Terry Boylan and Roxby Council’s Anni Giles. The Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation already supports local and regional businesses and contractors by purchasing goods from them or using their services when possible. To further increase its connection with Roxby Downs, the Kokatha board has appointed local man David Hunter as the pastoral properties manager. “David has extensive experience in the pastoral business and a long-term association with the Roxby Downs community through his work with BHP Billiton, co-ordinating and supervising activities at Arid Recovery and working on various pastoral properties in the region and beyond,” Mr Ryan said. Four station hands are currently employed to help Mr Hunter on the three pastoral properties. Mr Ryan said these were positive roles for the successful candidates, who were able to gain and develop a diverse range of skills. “The properties also form a part of Kokatha heritage as sites of cultural importance for both the Aboriginal and European history,” he said. “Many Kokatha people have direct family ties with the stations where relatives lived and worked with past pastoral families.”

D

ust off your running shoes – the Roxby Downs Desert Dash is back for its eighth year and is set to take place on Sunday, September 11.

A 3km event has been added this year to coincide with the 5km and 10km races – which can be run or walked.

The Dash accommodates for all ages and all fitness levels, with families encouraged to enter as well. “The benefits of the event are not just for health and fitness – it is a community event bringing people together, it is a family event,” said Desert Dash committee member Scott Humphries. The course will remain the same, starting at the oval and heading out Olympic Way to

the Pimba turnoff, before returning to the oval. Last year’s Desert Dash attracted around 200 entrants, and Mr Humphries said he was hoping for similar numbers this time around. This year’s event will also include the Deadly Run series, which is aiming to attract indigenous athletes. It is one of a series of events that indigenous participants can compete in to qualify for

the Deadly Fun Run Series Championships held at Uluru. A new-look committee has been hard at work organising the Desert Dash. Maree Jackson, Phil Behrens and Sally Bryant have left and were replaced by Matt Frederick, Beck Cooke, Sally Natt and Mark Young. Mr Humphries said the committee was still looking for volunteers to help on the day and encouraged everyone to start training.

Mr Williams also levelled out the arena and the road leading into the grounds. “These works are greatly appreciated by the club for several reasons, the main one being the horses’ health,” said a club spokesperson. “A big thanks to TOLL Group from the Roxby Downs Riding Club. “All members and horses greatly appreciate this community service.”

Exhibition marks forum’s 10th WRITTEN BY RYNEISHA BOLLARD

T

he Roxby Downs Arts and Culture Forum celebrated its 10th anniversary with the opening of an exhibition in the roxbylink gallery last Thursday night.

From our private collections features artworks either created or obtained by forum members. These include tea cosies and sweaters knitted by Sandy Sumsion, along with a piece entitled Reconciliation by Mary Brennan that is owned by Jane Gloster. Forum chairperson Rachel Young said many members had come and gone and contributed to the community in various ways over the past 10 years. “They have inspired our community to sing, dance, act, create, paint, make, film, photograph and – probably the most significant thing of all – to dream creatively,” she said. Mrs Young said the forum – which had its first meeting on September 28, 2005 – involved volunteers getting together to empower, engage and educate the local community in the arts and arts practice. “As with any volunteer organisation, our membership has seen its fair share of ebb and flow, but throughout we have always kept hold of our vision and maintained our passion for the arts,” she said. “Volunteer organisations of any kind require energy and passion, and the Arts and Culture Forum has worked hard to sustain both.” Mrs Young said the forum had achieved many goals, with the Red eARTh Festival being at the top of the list and followed by the community mural and performances and workshops from a number of artists and creative companies. “None of this would be possible without the support of organisations who are willing to dig in and generously support our crazy ideas – both financially as well as in kind,” she said. “Our dreams would still be locked away in fantasy land without this assistance. “Significant partners of note include roxbylink, Roxby Downs Council, BHP Billiton, local businesses, Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School, Savills, Country Arts SA and other funding bodies. “We are very thankful for their generosity and look forward to their continued partnerships. “I would also like to thank the general public for their support over the many years – support as volunteers at events, or assisting with venues and logistics, cooking food, billeting artists and, most importantly of all, showing up to enjoy the workshops and productions that are on offer. “It always makes the hours of organising so much more worthwhile when other people genuinely gain from the experience and grow.” From our private collections is on display in the roxbylink art gallery until August 26. Meanwhile last Thursday’s event also served as the official opening of a historic and artistic display at the entrance to the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre. The display is set into the wall and features an engraved copper frame. Behind a glass panel there is a rotating wheel detailing key events in Roxby’s history. The project began in 2013 and has been a collaboration between BHP Billiton, Mrs Young and fellow artist Dave Kovac. BHP Billiton’s Chad Menzies said thanks were also owed to the Roxby Downs 25th celebrations committee, roxbylink and Roxby Council. Mr Menzies said the display was an “incredible” addition to the main street. He added that a time capsule would be installed in the ground below, and contributions of historic items were being sought to add to this. For further details, phone the Visitor Information Centre on 8671 5941. Arts and Culture Forum member Jane Gloster with one of her contributions to the exhibition, Reconciliation by Mary Brennan.

Fashion competition to take a new shape T

horoughbred Racing SA (TRSA) has recently announced changes to the Fashion at the Races competition.

These will affect the season running from TRSA’s first provincial meeting of the new racing calendar, the 2016 Balaklava Cup (August 31), until the 2017 Roxby Downs Races. This means next week’s regional heat will not be part of the new format but will be supported with the major prize of two tickets to the 2016 Melbourne Cup Day held at Morphettville, plus a night’s accommodation at the Oaks Hotels and Resorts, Glenelg. It will then be judged online during the following week, and the winner will be notified in time to attend the 2017 Balaklava Cup as a VIP guest. By altering the competition’s structure, the categories and the prizes available, TRSA believes more entrants will be attracted to enter an even more streamlined competition. TRSA is excited to commence rolling this new model out at the Balaklava Cup on Wednesday, August 31. In an effort to provide racegoers with an even better experience, TRSA will support the Fashions at the Races competition with a newly introduced consistent cash prize for the best dressed. The prizes will now be the same at each major racing event and Country Cup. These include cash prizes of up to $1000. The same goes for runner-up prizes and the new category of best dressed man. Up until now, clubs have had to source their own major prizes. TRSA is making this easier by providing the same major prizes for all competitions. However, there are still opportunities for each club to add their own categories and source local prizes in order to support the local community. The second major change is that the final will be shifted to a new online fashion hub created by TRSA. This new format will encourage more people to compete, and also removes the need to travel for the state final. Instead, the winners of each qualifying event will be profiled online and a judging panel will select the overall winner from these entries. The judges will be announced soon. A People’s Choice award could also be decided in this way. With the re-

REGIONAL HEAT CRITERIA 2016 Note: Entrants must be aged 18 years or over. Appropriateness of the outfit for the particular event and conditions  Entrants should dress with the weather in mind. If it’s a winter event, they should dress in the appropriate clothing (not a summer dress).  A dirt track and surrounds should also be considered, as footwear should be tailored to the conditions.  Entrants should not be dressed as if they are going to a night club – appropriate daywear is essential. Originality and confidence  The entrant’s personality and willingness to think outside the square should be obvious in their outfit.  They should look confident and happy in their outfit and wear something that makes them stand out in a positive manner. Attention to detail with accessories  For the ladies, appropriate headwear is essential, as is a men’s tie or neckwear.  The overall picture must be considered in the judging – bag, shoes, jewellery and headwear.  The entire outfit must be complementary and fit together.

moval of the state final event, this also means that once an entrant has qualified, they are ineligible to enter at future events in that season. The online fashion hub, which will launch next month, will also provide a new way to promote local businesses. For more information, visit: www. theracessa.com.au Meanwhile the 2016 Roxby Downs Races will also include its own prizes (sponsored by Roxby Hydraulics) for the following categories:  Ms Outback ($800 first prize, $200 second prize, $100 third prize)  Mr Outback ($250)  Best Dressed 5 and Under

 Best Dressed Under 10 Years  Best Dressed 17 and Under  Novelty categories will include:  Alliance Airlines Best Hat Female  ToxFree Most Creative Male  BSH Solutions Most Creative Female  Roxby Earthmoving Best Hat Male  Kalari Pty Ltd Snazziest Couple  57 Films Most Elegant Lady  RoxFM Best Hairstyle  WorkPac Best Fascinator Nominations for Ms Outback will be open at the Roxby Downs Racecourse on Saturday, August 6, from 11am to 1pm.

Appreciation of current fashion trends  Entrants must show that they’re aware of current trends and interpret these trends in their own way.  Elements of their outfit should reflect current trends without losing the entrant’s personal flair. Grooming and deportment  Entrants will be judged according to not only their outfit, but also the way they carry themselves on stage.  Hair, make-up and behaviour on stage will also be considered by the judges.

M

ark your calendar for Tue s d ay, August 16, as a precious piece of South Australian history will be brought to life at the roxbylink Auditorium.

The Red Cross Letters is a collaboration between the State Theatre Company of South Australia and Country Arts SA. The production is inspired by a bundle of letters (recently digitised from more than 8000 case files) kept at the South Australian State Library for more than 96 years.

Dry July an educational experience

ith cancer affecting so many people, Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) teacher Beth Elliott has taken up the Dry July cause to try and give back to those in need. Mrs Elliott said having the fundraiser fall during the school holidays had made her think more about the cause and even opened up a discussion with her younger children. “We know people that have been affected by cancer and (my daughter) Evie said maybe the money raised could go towards buying people hair,” she said. Mrs Elliott said she only had the occasional social drink,

which was why giving up alcohol had been relatively easy so far. She said she was thrilled to be taking part in Dry July with so many other locals as part of the H2O Heroes team. The large number of participants has meant more chances of getting the responsible drinking message across to the community. “It is good to see so many local people taking part in Dry July,” Mrs Elliott said. “Alcohol has become commonplace in society, and by doing Dry July it points out how much we do rely on alcohol when we are out doing something socially.” Mrs Elliott said she had been well supported by family, the staff at RDAS and the Olympic Dam Sporting Club. As of Monday she had raised around $500.

ouch football is returning to Roxby Downs after two years off.

It is expected that the recent rise in local enthusiasm for rugby will draw more people to a similar sport. The competition is being run by roxbylink and kicks off on Thursday, August 4. It is open to everyone over the age of 14 years. Each side needs six players on the field and must always include two girls. “It is a social event, like mixed net-

ball on a Wednesday night, where whoever wants to play can come out for a run and there is a little final at the end,” said roxbylink’s Hannah Wurfel. “If you don’t know how to play you can still learn as you go. It is pretty easy to pick up.” Competition organisers are also looking for umpires to assist on game night, with payments of $70 available to those who are willing to help out. Anyone interested in putting in a team or helping out as an umpire is asked to contact Hannah Wurfel via email (hannah.wurfel@roxbylink.com. au).

Inaugural awards night wraps up season

T

he Roxby Downs Volle yball A s s o c i a t i o n ( R D VA ) h e l d it s inaug ural end-of-sea son presentation night at the Olympic Dam Sporting Club on Saturday.

Gareth Bryant and Brooke Essex were the top award winners, taking out the A grade male and female Most Valuable Player awards respectively. Essex, along with Randell Howse, was also named best on court for her side’s win in the grand final. Adam Barnes and Kelly Quinn took out the MVP awards in the B grade, while Sam Fishlock and Wade Ball were named best on ground for the B grade grand final, which

was won by Scared Hitless. RDVA president Simon Parker said all the award winners were thoroughly deserving and the presentation night was a perfect way to recognise these achievements and cap off the season. “Sometimes there has been a bit of a trend where the same people win the awards, but this year we had some new ones,” he said. “It was good to see others stepping up and playing some good volleyball.” Parker was also recognised for his commitment to the RDVA when he received a service award for eight years as president of the association. He said it had been a positive season with normal numbers taking part in the com-

petition and maintaining the same level of competitiveness. While the association’s trip to Port Lincoln to compete at a local tournament in March was unsuccessful, Parker said it gave them the chance to ‘blood’ some youth, with three players taking part in their first tournament. Parker said his attention was now already focused on next season, which is due to commence in just two weeks. He added that the RDVA would be entering a men’s and women’s team for the Port Augusta tournament on the October long weekend. BY PATRICK GLOVER

ocal riders Trent Smits and Taj Gow-Smith hold leads in their respective classes following round three of the South Australian Motocross (SAMX) Championship in Port Augusta on the weekend.

Mel Ferry won the A grade female runner-up MVP award at last Saturday’s end-of-season presentations.

Brooke Essex was named A grade female MVP and best on court in the grand final.

Wade Ball was named the B grade runner-up male MVP and best on court for the grand final.

Kelly Quinn was named the B grade female MVP.

Taj again impressed with wins in all six of his races across the 65cc (10 to under 12 years) and 85cc (nine to under 12) categories. This gives him a 36-point and 24-point lead in the classes respectively as he heads into the final round in a few weeks’ time. Smits collected two second places in the Motocross 1 Clubman class to sit four points clear of second. Zac Bradbery is also well positioned to finish on the podium after the final round. He is currently sitting second in the Motocross 2 Intermediate class after a second and a third on the weekend. Roxby Desert Motocross Club president Clint Gow-Smith said he was thrilled to see the local riders doing so well and being in such a good position in the state titles. “We didn’t expect this at all,” he told The Monitor. “We knew Zac and Taj were going to be around the mark, with Zac having won a junior title in his class last year and Taj’s strong performaces. “Trent was unlucky last year, he missed a few races, but he has put in this year and really improved. “Zac is still in with a chance, and hopefully we can get Taj and Trent through the next round with similar results and they can bring home a few state titles, which would be pretty cool.” Andrew Swanson and Ben Dixon were two other local riders who competed in the SAMX Championship’s senior and junior divisions respectively on the weekend. Swanson finished eighth and 10th in the Veterans A category to leave him in ninth overall, 76 points off the leader and just 31 off a podium finish. Dixon competed in the 65cc (seven to nine years) category and finished in eighth, seventh and sixth to have him sitting in 14th place overall. Gow-Smith said it was a positive to see all the boys doing so well and all improving at each event. “It was a pretty good round, with all the boys recording some of their best results,” he said. “All five boys improved this weekend or stayed consistent and overall that showed, with all the boys improving and Taj and Trent holding onto their leads.” The fourth and final round of the SAMX Championship for both the senior and junior divisions will be held at Murray Bridge on August 13-14.

he Olympic Dam Barbarians (ODB) were again rewarded for their stand-out season, with three players taking honours at the Spencer Gulf Rugby League awards night on the weekend.

Nikaiya Graham was the big winner from the night, taking home the award for best forward, player’s player and most tries. This follows on from his best on ground award from the grand final and the ODB Player’s Player award recently. Jacob Coles followed up his Top Points Scorer award at the ODB presentation night earlier this month with the same award for the SGRL, along with a trophy for the most goals scored. Wi Pitau was recognised as one of four Club League Persons of the Year. Meanwhile the Barbarians will take to the field for the first time since their grand final win this Saturday. They will take on the Riverland Roos – kicking off from 2pm – at Barmera as part of their endof-season trip.

Footy finishing order set

WRITTEN BY ROSS WILSON

A

s the Far North Football League for 2016 meanders into the finals series in a couple of weeks, the finishing order of the ladder is set in stone with only three rounds to play. At this stage there are only two realistic premiership hopes – Roxby Districts and East Roxby. Unfortunately both Olympic Dam and Hornridge have been decimated by injury, and Coober Pedy has never been in the hunt this year. Although stranger things have happened, and the Magpies have somehow found a way, over the past few years, of making it to the grand final. On Saturday at the town oval the games went as predicted, with the Roxby Districts Miners coasting to an emphatic 48-point win over Hornridge and East Roxby registering a 252-point thrashing of Coober Pedy.

Roxby Districts d Hornridge

T

he Miners led from the start and, despite a Hornridge rally in the middle of the first quarter, were untroubled to win.

By quarter time the Miners led by 17 points and, after a very even second quarter, each side kicking a goal apiece, the margin was a competitive 15 points at the main break. Having a very functional forward line again stood out in the premiership quarter with the Miners kicking five goals and a further four in the last to see the reigning premiers just too quick and too classy. The difference between the two teams was the scoring power, with Sean McIvor and Kain Zeptner both chipping in with four goals each, to which the Magpies had no answer. Both sides were well down on full strength, and while it was an entertaining game it never reached any great heights as a spectacle. The Miners’ best players were Todd Paull off half back, Ricky Prosser, Callan Haugum, Spencer Crafter-King and McIvor. Brodie Farnham was brilliant for the Magpies, giving them plenty of drive from the centre, and Ash Baxter was everywhere and kicked three goals. Hornridge’s other best players were John Martin, Levi Rawlins and Ash Webster. The Miners won 14.10 (94) to Hornridge’s 6.10 (46).

East Roxby d Coober Pedy

C

oober Pedy could only muster 10 players and ‘borrowed’ four players from East Roxby to take the field.

This was a disaster from start to finish, and farcical as East Roxby was able to score at will with little to no resistance. This is the sixth time the Saints have been beaten by more than 200 points this season, and it has become a weekly ‘score fest’ for opposing teams. Full marks are owed to Scott McIntyre, who booted 30 goals. He could have probably kicked another 10 had he not missed several set shots or passed off to teammates at other times. Others picking up goals were Jason Lukich, Troy Mulders and Rob Kraack with three each. East Roxby ran out the victors by 252 points, 41.19 (265) to 2.1 (13). The best players for East Roxby were McIntyre, Jason Lukich, who I thought was best on the ground, Andrew Moss, Rhett Sims and Curtley Dadleh. The Saints were best serviced by their ‘ring ins’ James Beenham, Ben Crawford, Simon Rienstra, Rodney Weetra and Roy Boland.
