Roxby Downs Police Senior Sergeant Terry Boylan said the enormous crowd was well behaved.

He said there had been only two people charged with drink driving offences on Saturday night, which was in line with an average Saturday night.

“There were no incidences of note,” he said “We did continual foot patrols of the area where the pageant was being held and it was pretty good,” He said most people left the area at midnight as soon as the band Mr Buzzy finished playing.

“But there were no issues – and next morning it was pretty well cleaned up quite quickly,” he said.

He said the Roxby Downs community had acted responsibly and with respect at the BYO event, which would only help to secure the continuation of the BYO event into the future.

Library and Area School Chopper ‘drops raise for Red Shield Appeal in’ at BP servo R T

he Roxby Downs Community library and Roxby Downs Area School have joined forces this Christmas to entice to the community to support the 2013 Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

Community Librarian Kimberley Hargave said when she moved to town last year, she was surprised at the lack of community giving opportunities.

“We decided as a library team and community services team to be involved and got in contact with the Salvation Army,” Ms Hargrave said last week.

To their surprise, upon contacting the Salvation Army in Port Augusta, the Community Library found another local submission had been placed,

by RDAS. “Samantha (Thompson, Secondary teacher) and I talked about how we could work together in partnership to enable the community to participate in supporting the Salvation Army,” Ms Hargrave said.

Mr Agostino, who was joined by fellow business executives Cosi and John, had flown into town to discuss redevelopment options for the BP franchise.

“It’s early days,” Mr Agostino told The Monitor. “We’re looking to put a food offer here, over and above what we already offer. Until we obviously plan, draw up contracts and everything it’s a bit early to say.”

Mr Agostino, who has owned the BP in Roxby Downs for 25 years, said the

Agostino Group had identified a need for the redevelopment in Roxby Downs, but said it will occur in turn after the completion of other projects within the group.

BP Roxby Downs is one of 15 franchises owned by the Agostino Group, including service stations in St Peters, Parafield Gardens and Gawler.

So why did the service station moguls land in town?

“We were going to land at the airport and the pilot decided it was more convenient to land here,” Mr Agostino said.

“Our plan was to land at the airport, and then Terry (Luckett, Station Manager) was going to pick us up. “Of course if you want to give something to younger children, we’re certainly not going to refuse it,” Ms Hargrave said.

It is also asked that donated items remain unwrapped, and are

submitted to the Community Library by Friday, December 13.

Donations will be distributed locally.

“We hope that people come in and support this, and if you’ve got any questions just pop into the library,” Ms Hargrave finished.

Wedgetail Six event cancelled due to heat E

xtreme heat delayed the sixth Wedgetail event last Wednesday, a biannual emergency services exercise designed to test various facets and responses of Roxby’s essential services teams.

Wednesday’s temperature hit 40 degrees Celsius before 4pm and 4.30pm that day, and was still stifling at 39.7 degrees at 6pm that night, when the exercise started.

Despite the setback, Roxby Downs SAPOL, CFS, SES, SA Ambulance, SES and MSS Security went through the motions of the exercise, with plans to reschedule and undertake the event in the cooler months of next year.

Drink drivers caught Roxby Downs

w o l o c a l R ox b y D ow ns re sident s have lost their driver’s licence and another was reported for driving an unregistered car, after being detected driving at Roxby Downs.

Just before 10pm on Saturday night, a Police Highway patrol stopped a man driving a car without the headlights operating. Further checks revealed the car he driving was also unregistered and uninsured. When breath tested the man allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.073.

The 39-year-old man from Queensland was reported for driving unregistered and uninsured and drink driving.

Just after midnight on Sunday morning, local police patrols stopped a man driving a Toyota 4WD for a random breath test. The 31-year-old man allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.179 more than three times the legal limit.

The Roxby Downs man was reported for drink driving, his licence was disqualified for a minimum of 12 months and his car was impounded for 28 days.

All drivers reported will be summonsed to appear in the Roxby Downs Magistrates Court at a later date.

“Anytime the emergency services organisations and BHP Billiton get together to do a task, we always make sure that we learn from it,” said Senior Sergeant Terry Boylan last week.

“It’s unfortunate that some of the practical parts of this particular exercise were cancelled due to the extreme heat and we always have to mindful of the Occ (sic) health and safety of the participants.

“We will be sitting down and making sure that we will look at what we did well, and what we can do better for next time and I’m sure we’ll be looking at running this particular exercise again in the cooler months in its entirety.”

The original exercise, was designed

to test emergency service reaction to an airplane that had crashed on takeoff. It would have involved volunteer ‘actors’ from local schools, playing the part of the victims.

Some skill sets were still tested in each different emergency service.

“Obviously because of the fact that the exercise didn’t pan out as we thought it would, I would suggest that some of those weren’t enforced,” Snr Sgt Boylan said.

Response times to call outs were tested, as was the handling of a media presence.

Commanding Officer Gary Pusey dealt with The Monitor representative in a calm, polite and timely manner.

1lb cannabis R found in Andamooka home

oxby Downs Police arrested a 55-year-old Andamooka man last week, after allegedly locating approximately one pound of cannabis at an Andamooka property.

The property was searched by Roxby police, local detectives and a police drug dog at about 1.30pm last Thursday.

21-year-old female driver was almost three times the legal limit when she crashed through road signs on the Bypass road early Monday morning.

Roxby Downs Police attended the crash scene at 2:40am and recorded the woman’s blood alcohol reading at 0.144.

The Roxby Downs woman was reported for drink driving and driving without due care, her licence was also disqualified for a minimum of six months.

“Drugs are an issue in all towns in South Australia,” Snr Sgt Boylan said.

“I don’t think Andamooka, Roxby Downs or Woomera are exempt from the issues of drugs in their community and police are always working and targeting those people in the community who deal in these substances.”

The man has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance and was bailed to appear in the Roxby Downs Magistrates Court at a later date.

lobal, young and active is this year’s theme f o r I nt e r n at i o n a l Volunteers Day (IVD), a theme that could not be more fitting for the volunteers of Roxby Downs.

Without volunteer contribution, events such as Roxby’s 25th birthday would not have been nearly so successful. Local volunteers are invited to attend a celebration for International Volunteers Day tomorrow night at the Dunes Cafe.

Are you ready to switch?

T he Digital TV switch over for Roxby Downs is only six days away – are you ready to switch?

While digital television has been available in Roxby Downs for a couple of months now, the official turn off of the analogue television service will occur next Tuesday, December 10.

Roxby Downs falls into the ‘Remote Central and Eastern Australia’ region, which is the last area in Australia to be officially switched over, and includes 87,900 residents and parts of South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Torres Strait.

Digital TV offers better sound and picture quality, as well as a much larger choice of channels and access to an electronic television guide.

A Household Assistance Scheme has been developed to

help some eligible Australians make the switch. It is designed to aid older Australians, veterans and people with disabilities or their carers.

If eligible, assistance can include a high definition digital set-top box, installation of the box by a government contracted installer, a demonstration of how it works and a 12 month warranty, service and technical support free of charge.

The Satellite Subsidy Scheme not available in the Roxby Downs area.

While most new television sets are ‘digital ready’ and will receive the digital broadcast with ease, older sets require a set top box, or VAST decoder box to view channels. Questions regard television sets can be directed to the Digital Ready Hotline on 1800 201 013.

International Volunteers Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow, offers opportunity to raise public awareness of volunteer individuals and organisation’s contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels.

Roxby Council Projects Officer Sasha Yantewo said volunteers make a large impact locally. “It could be in small ways, but just by simply driving the local bus, cooking the barbeque, any little odd job really significantly contributes to the community,” she told The Monitor last week.

Sasha estimated there to be approximately 80 different organisations that rely heavily on volunteers and 25 per cent of the population undertaking volunteering yearly.

“So considering people are on night shifts and mostly everyone has jobs – we don’t have a high unemployment rate - that’s pretty good!” she said.

Local CFS volunteer Anthony Alcock said he volunteers because he enjoys helping people.

“I just enjoy helping people and I’ve made plenty of good friends and had a few good laughs,” he said.

“In communities like Roxby, we’d be stuffed without people volunteering. Between us

and SES and the ambos etc. It keeps the town pretty safe!”

Education and Community Officer Anni Walsh from volunteer supported organisation Arid Recovery said its volunteers are vital to the organisation.

“They help with the trapping and monitoring of animals, general maintenance and also with community events like market days, the 25 year celebrations and things like that,” she told The Monitor last week.

Anni said in the last six months, volunteers had contributed over 1300 hours of volunteertime.

“Our Arid Recovery volunteers are extremely dedicated.

Our volunteer hours are insane! The amount of volunteer work that our volunteers have done this year just astounds me,” she said. “Particularly with our bettong project we’ve been doing this year, they’ve been putting in a lot of late nights trapping.

“Our volunteers are just invaluable – we would be lost without them!”

Tying in with this year’s ‘Global, young and active’ theme, young volunteers will be quizzed by a Q&A panel at the IVD celebrations tomorrow night at the Dunes Café.

“It’s just a chance to honour, appreciate and celebrate the volunteers we have in our community,” Sasha said.

“Thank you to all the volunteers who do their bit in Roxby, it wouldn’t be the same without you!”

St Barbs ready to S welcome year nines

t Barbara’s Parish School continues to go from strength to strength and will expand to include Year 8s in 2013, and Year 9s in 2014.

Opened in 2000 originally as a primary year’s school, the two stage expansion has enabled students to continue their catholic education at St Barbs until the end of their middle school years.

According to Acting Principal Kylie Johnson, St Barbs is committed to offering a catholic education that motivates students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity.

She said on a number of occasions, the first ever group of Year 8s at St Barbs (16 in total) had been given the ‘opportunity to shine’, working conjunctively with that same school motto.

“The school has worked with other schools in the diocese and elsewhere to develop curriculum for these new levels,” Mrs Johnson told The Monitor last week. “The school is also the first school in South Australia to implement ‘The Leader in Me’ program which is a whole school transformational model that acts as a framework to improve performance in all other programs.”

The Leader in Me is based on Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and according to Mrs Johnson recognizes the maturity continuum of moving from dependence to interdependence.

She said it equips students with the self-confidence and skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.

“The 19 Year 8 students consolidated their leadership learning with a visit to the nation’s capital, Canberra,

in September,” Mrs Johnson added.

The school’s infrastructure has also undergone some remodelling to help properly accommodate for the new upper grades.

“The recent completion of the Food Technologies/Science room has enabled students to participate in a range of skills and understandings in regards to the importance of food in the wellbeing of all Australians,” Mrs Johnson said. “St Barbara’s Parish School has also refurbished three of its existing rooms to accommodate for students in year levels 8 and 9.”

Power Systems Manager Marcus Keller and Senior DC Technician Roger Dolling visited Port Augusta, Parachilna, Leigh Creek, Marree, Pimba and Roxby, promoting new energy storage technology suitable for commercial or residential properties.

The ZEN Freedom Powerbank can hold the same amount of energy in a 200 kilogram unit, as a 1.5 tonne gel battery unit.

“It can store enough energy to power the average household for two full nights,” explained Mr Dolling.

“Based on the average household using 20 kilowatt hours per day.”

Merry Christmas for the 2013 festive season!

Beetroot Walnut Salad Basil and

prosciutto lamb roast

Ingredients:

2 bunches baby beetroot, trimmed Olive oil, to grease 140g (2/3 cup) caster sugar 55g (1/2 cup) walnut halves 1/2 tsp sea salt flakes 2 bunches rocket leaves 80g goat’s cheese, crumbled 60ml (1/4 cup) extra virgin olive oil 1 tbs red wine vinegar

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Use a fork to prick beetroot. Place on a baking tray

and bake for 45 minutes or until tender.

Set aside to cool. Peel and halve.

2. Meanwhile, line a baking tray with baking paper. Brush a wire rack with oil.

Place over tray. Place the sugar in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Cook, without stirring, tilting pan occasionally, for four minutes or until sugar melts. Stir in walnuts to coat. Pour onto rack and separate walnuts. Sprinkle with salt. Set aside for 30 minutes to set.

3. Combine the rocket and beetroot in a serving bowl. Top with goat’s cheese and walnuts. Combine oil and vinegar in a jug and drizzle over the salad.

Tim Tam Balls

Ingredients:

2 x 350g heart-smart roast lamb rounds 2 x tablespoons basil pesto 6 x slices prosciutto, halved crossways Thyme and garlic roasted vegetables, to serve (see related recipe)

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. Line a roasting pan with baking paper.

2. Place lamb in prepared pan.

Spread each with one tablespoon pesto. Season with pepper. Arrange prosciutto, overlapping slightly, over lamb.

3. Roast for 30 minutes for medium or until cooked to your liking.

Stand, covered, for five minutes.

Thinly slice lamb. Serve with roast vegetables.

Ingredients:

(makes 22 large) 1 x Packet Tim Tams 1 x 250gm Block Philadelphia Cream Cheese 1 x 375gm Cooking Choc (Milk/Dark)

Method:

1. Crush the Tim Tams, add softened cream cheese and mix thoroughly (I used a food processor, but by hand works fine) 2. Roll into balls. (1 teaspoon of mix) 3. Roll balls in melted chocolate and refrigerate until set.

Merry Christmas for the 2013 festive season!

How to make a gingerbread house Ingredients:

6 x cups all purpose flour 1/2 x teaspoon baking powder 4 x teaspoons ground ginger 4 x teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 x teaspoon ground cloves or allspice 1/2 x teaspoon salt 1 1/2 x sticks (12 Tbsp) butter, softened 1 1/2 x cups packed light brown sugar 2 x large eggs 1 x cup dark molasses 1 x Tbsp water

Method

Make the gingerbread dough 1. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large bowl, set aside.

2. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed the butter and brown sugar until fluffy and well blended. Beat in the eggs, molasses and water until well combined.

3. Beat half of the flour mixture into the molasses mixture until well blended and smooth. Stir in the remaining flour. Knead (or use your mixer’s dough hook) until well blended. If dough is too soft, add a little more flour.

4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least two hours, preferably overnight. You can make it up to three days ahead of time. Let sit at room temperature for at least 10 minutes before rolling out.

Create and cut out pattern pieces Create cardboard templates to cut out pattern pieces and then roll out dough to about 1cm onto waxed paper, cutting around templates to create the walls and roof. Add doors and windows at this point if desired.

Make the gingerbread house pieces 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees 2 . Bake in oven until the edges are just beginning to darken, 11-15 minutes for the large pieces, 6-8 minutes for the small pieces.

Rotate the sheets half way through the baking for more even browning. Remove the sheets to racks to cool, about 15 minutes.

3. While the pieces are still slightly warm, lay the pattern pieces over them and use a large straight chef’s knife to trim off any parts of the pieces that have through cooking spread beyond the pattern. Remove pieces to cool directly on racks to cool completely.

Make royal icing Royal icing is not only used for decorating, but it is the mortar that holds the gingerbread pieces together to form the house. The following proportions should make enough icing for both: 2 large egg whites 2 2/3 cup icing sugar 1. Whisk together until smooth the egg whites and 1 1/3 cups of the icing sugar.

2. Add the remaining 1 1/3 cup of powdered sugar to the sugar egg mixture. Using an electric mixer, beat on high speed until the icing holds stiff peaks. If it doesn’t form stiff peaks, add more icing sugar 3. Place a dampened clean towel over the bowl of royal icing. Keep this towel over the icing to prevent it from drying out while you work with it.

4. When you are ready to mortar or decorate, fill a pastry bag with the icing. If you don’t have a pastry bag, you can make your own with a re-sealable plastic freezer bag, just cut off the tip (a small cut) of one of the corners of the bag.

Construct the basic house, mortaring the pieces together with royal icing Tip – Grab a friend – it helps to have a few extra hands. It also helps to use ‘props’ to lean against the walls to help hold them steady as you join them. Canned food from the cupboard is a good option for this.

1. Pick a solid base for your gingerbread house - either a flat cookie sheet, or a thick, sturdy piece of cardboard. If you want, line the base with aluminum foil or wax paper.

2. Pipe a thick line of icing along a short end of one of the side pieces. Press the iced side piece against the edge of either the front or back pieces. Hold in place for a few minutes until the icing is partially set. Repeat with the other side piece. Prop up with cans if necessary. Repeat with the other short edges of the side pieces and the remaining front/ back piece. Pipe icing along the seams, inside and outside of the house, to fill in any gaps and to add extra stability. Pipe icing along the edges of the house where it meets the base.

Let set for at least an hour before attempting to add the roof pieces.

If any of the gingerbread house pattern pieces break don’t panic – you can mortar them back together with some icing 3. Once the royal icing has dried enough so that the base structure is solid, you can go to work on the roof. Pipe icing all along the top edges of the structure, front and back and two sides. The roof pieces are a rectangular shaped. Place the roof pieces so that the long ends of the rectangle are running along the top of the house.

It helps if you have two people working together to place the roof pieces on the house at the same time so that they meet easily at the top center, and extend out a little bit, forming an overhang at each end. Gently hold the roof pieces in place for a few minutes until they are set enough so they don’t slide off when you remove your hands. Pipe the top seam of the house with extra icing. Let the house stand for at least an hour, and preferably eight hours before decorating.

Super succulent wreath

By Gail Heritage t is not only their inspiring shapes and often small size that make succulents the perfect plant to use, but also their lively little free spirits.

I

Succulents come in so many wonderful shapes, sizes, colours and textures offering endless combinations that can work in a succulent wreath, so experiment and be creative.

What you will need.

A selection of succulents - thrillers, fillers and spillers!

Spagnum moss and wire wreath: From your local garden supplier or pick up from our contact listed below next time you are in Adelaide.

Flexible wire : This helps to pin or wire plants or cuttings to the frame to help hold them in place.

Potting mix: Use a good quality one with small, medium and large product.

Poker: Chopstick, scissors, pencil or stick to help poke holes in the wreath to plant in your succulents.

Fishing line: Approximately 1.5 metres.

Instructions.

Soak moss in water until it is saturated. Squeeze out excess water and then slightly more than half fill the wire wreath, packing it in, but leaving a ‘trench’ in the middle for your potting mix to sit. Add potting mix to ditch as you go along, covering with spagnum moss, but creating pockets of potting mix to allow your succulents to take root. Do this all the way round the frame and then wind fishing line all the way around the wreath firmly to create shape and help hold all the product in place. You are now ready to plant!

Lay out the plants you intend to use in the shape of your frame in a ‘planting plan’. You can use cuttings from other plants, or new plants.

Make holes in the sphagnum moss and push cut-

tings and plants into place. You can wind wire around the stems of cuttings and poke through, winding the wire onto the frame at the back. Other plants can be pinned in place by creating long v-shaped pins, and pinning the plants to the frame. Once again you can poke the wire right through to the back and wind it onto the frame to make your wreath more sturdy.

Continue planting until you are happy with your creation!

General care.

You will need to leave the wreath lying flat for several weeks to allow the roots to establish. Don’t place in direct sun for several weeks, and a semi shaded position is preferable.

Rotate the wreath occasionally to allow plants to grow evenly.

Deep water soak wreath occasionally in a shallow dish for about ten minutes. Every now and then add liquid fertiliser to the water. In between a light spray of water will do the trick.

This idea comes from a recent workshop with Open Gardens Australia. The nation-wide group regularly opens private gardens to the public, and enables owners to raise funds for selected charities. More information about the South Australian program can be found at www.opengardens.org.au.

l t h o u g h O c t o b e r ’s Volunteer of the Month Jane Harris has been in Roxby for only nine months, she has been completely taken by our little slice of desert.

Jane arrived in Roxby nine months ago to serve as acting Assistant Manager for the Roxby Christian Community Church and is due to leave this week, but, she conceded, it will be hard.

“I just think Roxby is a wonderful place,” Mrs Harris said. “I must admit, I’m quite saddened and a bit teary to think that I might be leaving it til next March.

“When I came here, I thought, ‘oh yes, okay, I’ll be here, I’ll do what I have to do, I’ll spend time doing the things I enjoy and we’ll leave but, it’s going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done’.”

Mrs Harris has kept herself busy well and truly since staying in Roxby, having volunteered for Strengthening Our Families, the Multicultural English, Multicultural Group and Christian Community Church prayer groups. She has also visited young mums around town and conducted hospital visitations, as well as making regular trips out to Andamooka.

“I don’t have time to be bored!”

Mrs Harris laughed. And the reason she spends so much time helping others?

“Because I love it,” she said. “We

went around Australia with Bush Church Aid three years ago, that’s how I came to actually end up here, and we volunteered in many places we didn’t really even know existed and found it was just the most amazing experience.

“I love to be with people, I love to spend time with people and I love to think I might be able to help in a very small way.”

Unable to stay away for long, Mrs Harris and her husband Frank plan to return to Roxby in March next year, to do another nine month stint with the church.

“Roxby Downs has won my heart, and it’s going to be very hard to leave it. It is an incredibly special place,” she said Mrs Harris decided to donate her $100 Big Sky Voucher to the Roxby Downs Area School Special Needs Class.

“One of the ladies in the church, her little boy goes to that and in the nine months we’ve been here I’ve seen such an incredible difference in him,” she explained.

“I feel that in any way I can help that group to develop these children more, I’m only too happy to do it.”

Now LED technology is available for home light bulbs which brings with it exponentially more energy savings and light bulbs which last ten times longer than fluorescents.

LED bulbs cost more to purchase however over time add up to big savings not only in energy bills, but also for the environment. In addition they don’t heat up like conventional light bulbs which means they are safer in the home and far less likely to cause house fires.

Most LED bulbs are rated to 50000 hours which means if used eight hours a day, their expected lifespan is 17 years.

Even if you are renting your home, it would be well worth while using these, and swapping them back for the original bulbs that were in the light fittings when you move out.

This technology is also currently being trialled for street lights in Roxby Downs with expected savings in power of up to 50 per cent.

What’s happening at RDAS? Museum visit

R

ecently we had the Museum of South Australia’s Outreach Program visit Roxby Downs Area School. The Team Six presenters were led by Leeanne Bloomfield. They used items in their presentations form the museum’s collection of artefacts to educate the students about South Australian natural history through time.

Carey Burke, a Palaeontologist, ran the ‘Bone Box’ session where students had hands on experience at identifying various fossils.

The visit included: • Nick Bailey the geologist took students on a 4.5 million year history trip of Aus tralia.

• Linda Builth and arachnids. Students called her the spider lady. Linda showed the students the vital role spiders played in controlling insect pests. She had lots of specimens that sent a few shivers through the classes.

• Birds with Brain Blaylock taught students

about the types of birds that are found in the Roxby area and their call signs.

• Emma Anderson entertained the recep tion students. With stories, songs, dance, poetry, observation, exploration, commu nication and handling of museum collec tion items.

• Karin Borovich from the Faculty of Sciences, Geology and Geophysics, Earth and Environmental Sciences talked about meteorites and had a meteorite that had originated from Mars.

The students really enjoyed the sensory rich experience, the presenters, the handling and being up close to items from the museum.

It was a school visit I am sure they will not forget for some time.

We would like to thank Leeanne and her team and BHP Billiton who sponsored the visit.

Employment opportunities program for Andamooka

By Millie Thomas nemploye d re sident s of Andamooka will be provided with an opportunity to get back into the workforce and contribute to their community in the near future with the introduction of Remote Jobs and Communities Program.

U

The $1.5 billion, five year program has been designed as an integrated and flexible approach to participation and employment services for remote Australia, and is planned to be implemented in 59 regional communities.

The program, which will replace Job Services Australia, Disability Employment Services, Community Development Employment Projects and the Indigenous Employment Program, will ask those that can work contribute 15 hours a week to allocated community projects in order to receive their Centrelink benefits.

The program will also see the employment of one works supervisor per 15 employees.

Andamooka Town Management Committee Community (ATMC) Administrator Deb Allen is excited at the work opportunities and up skilling the program will provide to the unemployed of Andamooka.

“Complete Personnel will provide funding for the tools, training and

PPE and will identify the people available,” Ms Allen explained last week.

“And APOMA will liaise with the local school, Frontier Services, CFS and other community groups to see if they have works they need completed and will prioritise what happens and when.”

The ATMC will also support the program, by offering administrative support.

APOMA initially met with Complete Personnel mid-November, to hand over information about the town, the community and its expectations to develop a five year community action plan that is updated annually against Government benchmarks.

The plan will then be used to measure the effect the Remote Jobs and Communities Program has on Andamooka.

The groups met again late last week to finalise program details.

“This will happen at no cost to the community. Everyone that works will get free PPE and there is opportunity for training if it is required,” Ms Allen said.

It is hoped the program will reduce unemployment, encourage community integration and pride and develop various community projects in Andamooka.

Santa rides into Andamooka

ver 40 motorcyclists decorated their wheels and gave toys in the spirit of Christmas as part of the annual Outback Tourer’s Toy Run last Saturday.

Cooper, 3, donated a toy for the annual Christmas toy run last Saturday.

The group met on Richardson Place on Saturday morning and made their way to Andamooka shortly before lunch.

Riders and members of the public generously donated toys for the cause with a trailer load delivered to Val Harrison and her team of hard-working volunteers at the Andamooka CWA. Donations included a trolley full of gifts from the Joeys from the Roxby Downs Scouts Group, as part of earning a Caring and Sharing badge.

A very hot Santa lead the convoy of bikes in the 30 degree heat to a refreshing morning tea at the CWA, where Andamooka children were ready to greet him.

Outback Tourers spokesperson Mal Smith said the gifts would be wrapped and delivered by the special helpers at the Andamooka CWA. “ There’s all sorts – bears and dolls trucks – for all different ages,” Mr Smith said.

“Toys this year will go to families around this local area that aren’t going so well, and Jamestown, the mid north… and also to New South Wales for fire affected families,” Mal said.

The Andamooka CWA volunteers will forward the gifts on wherever they are needed.

The Outback Tourers later enjoyed a few refreshments and lunch at the Tuckabox before making their way back into Roxby Downs for the pageant on Saturday night.

riday saw Andamooka take on Olympic Dam with both teams fielding fairly strong line ups.

Andamooka won the toss and elected to bat.

Despite 10 drop catches (from M. Hoffmann although managing to take a nice catch off his own bowling), OD were able to bowl Andamooka out for 105.

Pick of the bowlers were L Holbrook 3/5, Hoffman 2/7 and Hand 2/17. Hand was desperately unlucky not have a lot better figures with his team mates dropping five catches from his bowling.

Olympic Dam made light work of the run chase passing the total in the fifteenth over losing only one wicket in the process from a sharp catch from Ted. Wally Hand set the pace for the innings making 58 not out and was well

supported by Morris not out for 33.

Olympic Dam will no doubt be doing a lot of catching practice in the next few weeks in an effort to better support their bowlers.

The second game of the round was a one act affair with Rogues demolishing Hornridge. Hornridge batted first and were bowled out for 24 in the fourteenth over with new recruit S. McIvor taking 7/3. Other wicket takers were Boulton 2/8 and Willis 1/5.

As expected Rogues didn’t have a great deal of trouble passing the total after opening up with some of the younger players in their team. Willis top scored with 14 and K. Dadleh seven.

This week’s games start on Friday night with OD taking on Hornridge who will no doubt be looking to bounce back and Rogues facing Andamooka on Saturday night.

Taita re-elected as junior footy president

By Millie Thomas ox by D ow ns Junior Football Association President Matthew â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Taitaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Daddow was re-elected for a ďŹ fth season following the associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s AGM last week.

Mr Daddow said the committee had remained largely unchanged from the 2013 season, with Warwick Giles as Vice President, Karen Daddow as Secretary and Ally Steer as Treasurer.

The 2014 committee members include David Moyse, Libby Steer, Mark Young, Rein Geraghty and Jacqueline Quillman.

Mr Daddow said the committee will look into spending more time with the Auskick and Under 9 football groups, in order to appropriately prepare them for the more senior levels of football.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to teach them the skills required to put them up into the higher grades, which weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably lacked in previous years,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Daddow explained last week.

Up skilling is also on the agenda for junior footy next year, with hopes of sending players to Adelaide for Level Two Coaching Courses, and bringing a general strapping course to Roxby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just be for footy, that will be for all sports,â&#x20AC;? Mr Daddow said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kids might hurt their ďŹ ngers, so people need to know how to strap them!â&#x20AC;?

Mr Daddow said the Association hope to be involved in more representative games down south, and in particular hope to hold a game coinciding with the Minersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cup game, the date of which is yet to be determined.

ore than 20 local students underwent grading at the highly successful Roxby Downs Shotokan Karate Club on Sunday.

Members from the team recently made up the entirety of the South Australian Team which competed in Canberra, bringing home a swag of medals.

The gradings were judged by Senseis Malcolm Kadow, Deanne Hancock and Bill Natt in front of a large group of parents and fellow students at the Roxby Downs Area School gymnasium.

All students were moved to the next level.

The Best Female Trophy went to Yananai Chabayanzara, Best Male was awarded to Seth Parks and the Spirit Award went to Kyle Duance.

The club also hosted a Self Defence class on Sunday and will host a beep test tonight at 6.30pm in the school gymnasium.
