Where we’re going

Your voice.

You may say I’m a dreamer. As I sit and try to think about what is coming up ahead, I am overcome with thoughts about the recent past. About the women’s march on Washington. About how close to 500 people got together in the little city of Kamloops to join the millions of people around the world standing together in solidarity for women’s rights. And I am proud of each and every one of them. I am also excited that it happened at the same time as the #BellLetsTalk campaign. As women there is much silence to be broken. Even still. As

people there is much silence to be broken. And there’s still a long journey ahead before there is no more stigma on things like mental illnesses, abusive situations, equality, body acceptance, self worth … the list goes on and on. I do believe that someday there will be no need for marches. No need for protests. No need for trending hashtags to remind us it’s ok to talk. In the words of the great John Lennon .. Imagine all the people, living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I’m excited about what’s coming.

The changes, the tribulations, the growing pains as we work towards a peaceful tomorrow. There are awesome people and organizations right here in Kamloops that are building towards a better future. I encourage you to get involved in the things that speak to your heart. There are dozens of places to volunteer your time and energy. And then tell us about it! Let us help you spread the love. Vaginas coming back to Kamloops BY JULI HARLAND Photo from Vagina Monologues Kamloops The Kamloops Women’s Resource Group Society has been been producing The Vagina Monologues for close to fifteen years, raising funds for various user groups within

the community. This year it is KWRGS that will be receiving the funds raised, to help facilitate the many services that they provide to women and families in the Kamloops region. Written by Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues has been changing lives since

1996 when it made its debut off Broadway in New York at the Westside Theatre. The production is a collection of short monologues based on real women’s actual experiences, gives a glimpse at what it is to be, to feel, to live, as women of many backgrounds,

histories, demographics, sexuality, ability, outlook, age, and life experiences. The sensitive and, at times, very bold nature of some of the stories represented has garnished both praise and criticism from critics over the years. Even the women who read the stories have said that sharing the experiences of the women represented has changed them, given new perspectives, connected them. And that, ultimately, is the point. In 1998, Eve and others, including Willa Shalit, a producer of the Westside Theatre production, launched V-Day, a global nonprofit movement that has raised over US$100 million for groups working to end violence against women and girls — anti-violence through benefits of The Vagina Monologues. In 2011, Eve was awarded the Isabelle Stevenson Award at the 65th Tony Awards, which recognizes an individual from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations. The Monologues came to Kamloops,

at the start, as a work project for students. Since then it has become a mainstay for the organizers and an annual place of connection for many participants who return year after year to share the stories once again. “In 2001 we had social work practicum students that needed something to work on and the board agreed this was a great idea,” KWRGS representative and VM organizer Darcy Gorrill recalls. And aside from a couple of years of being produced through The Dish Society, Darcy and KWRGS have been faithfully producing the event annually ever since. “I went to Long Beach California with Bevin Avlier and Jacquie Brand to workshop with other people doing the Vagina Monologues and meet Eve Ensler,” says Darcy. “It become a passion because of past experience in my life and those around me.” Participants all have their own reasons for joining. Some as simple as wanting the connection of the tight knit group of women who share the journey. Some to honor the stories of their friends or families. Some to stand in or take back their own personal power. And some just because, hey, vaginas!

“The Vagina Monologues is the perfect way to get involved with fellow warriors and be able to support women in a huge way,” says long time participant Angie Doolan. “I’ve been a part of this movement since I was in high school, not only because of what we are raising money and awareness for, but because of the wonderful connections I get to make with woman in my own community. The Vagina Monologues has helped me grow as a woman and has taught me that we need to watch out for each other, men and women. A little support goes a long way!” There is still time to get involved! The production runs March 4th and 5th at The Rex, 417 Seymour Street. Tickets are available at Kamloops Live. There are various fundraisers on the go to support the Monologues, such as an online bachelor auction which will go live before Valentine’s Day, as well as silent auction and sales at the event itself. For more information on how you can get involved, get tickets, give sponsor or donation support, please contact Darcy at KWRSG: 250-5541112.

The continuing saga of chasing the fit lifestyle BY JULI HARLAND Photo by Lorinda Maruca Thank you for keeping up with the continuing story of my journey into fitness; otherwise known as the trials and tribulations of getting my fat butt fit. These last couple of weeks have been challenging, to say the least. I started off, after the last issue, with a gung ho attitude, motivated to the tits, and raring to go! My food journal was on point. My calorie count was enviable. And I had the energy of a teenager. Or at least that’s how it felt. And then life happened. My sister came out to visit for a week. And while I love seeing her, it also meant eight days of altered eating schedules, and maybe a little too much whiskey. Then my living room flooded. Which meant two days in a hotel room while it was fixed. Oh, and it was also on the day before my birthday. And my best girlfriend surprised me by coming to town for said birthday. Which, all combined, is a recipe for not the best eating habits. Now let me be straight up honest and say that I am full of the very best of intentions, but my follow through has always been a little lacking. My can do attitude was quickly replaced by celebrations and buffets and bar food. Surrounded by friends and family, and the lack of a kitchen due to the flood, we hit up the town and hit three different buffet restaurants, three different pubs for greasy fried plates of awesomeness, and downed far too many gin and sodas for my own good. The exercise level was low, unless you count walking around downtown

Juli and her best friend Tashja Janzen. “This seemed to be the epitome of what my week looked like,” Juli explained. in high heels searching for the perfect late night pachos as exercise. When I stepped on the scale a few days ago, for my weekly weigh in, I had gained two pounds. Well, shit. I had the usual thoughts of “I’ll never be able to do this. Why do I even bother? My self-control is a big steaming pile of failure. I’m going to be fat and miserable and dateless for the rest of eternity. I may as well crawl back under the covers and eat chocolate chip cookies slathered in peanut butter until I don’t care any more (which, by

the way, if you’ve never smeared peanut butter on your chocolate chip cookies, you’re missing out).” I completely forgot about my food journal for a week (sorry James). I missed a workout with my incredibly positive and ridiculously patient trainer, James (again, sorry). And I may or may not have spent half a day in bed with popcorn and bad made for TV movies feeling sorry for myself due to the crappy weigh in. Now here’s where, in the past, I may have just given up. Gave in and declared

myself as good as it’s going to get, and embraced the gooey goodness of Hagen Daaz straight from the container. But I didn’t. A new week, and a new persistence. James was awesome in being supportive about my terrible week. “We’ll just wipe the slate clean, and just move forward.” Simple, but needed. Then, I’m pretty sure as punishment, he upped our Mondays and Fridays to an hour rather than the half hour we’d been doing and before you know it I’m standing up,

sitting down, standing up, sitting down with what feels like a million pounds dangling from my weary arms (70, it was 70 pounds) while the ever smiling James continues with his questionable counting skills. And I love it. I’m so incredibly thankful for the continued journey. I’m thankful for having the support to get back on the horse after falling off oh-so-terribly. I’m thankful for James and his infectious positivity. And I’m thankful for you, the readers, who keep me accountable.

A mostly Trump-free look at the Oscar nominations Let me tell you, it is taking all of my strength to not fill this column with my crazy ramblings about U.S. President Donald Trump, and how only one day after the inauguration he already had his press secretary officially spreading lies to the media. But I’m not going to do that. Because the Academy Award nominations have been announced, and I think it will infinitely more positive to focus on those instead of the fact that we are now clearly living inside of a dystopian science fiction novel. Here’s the thing about me and the Academy Awards: I make kind of a regular thing about trying to predict the winners, usually without having seen any of the films in question. For the purposes of this column, I’m only going to focus on some of the more prominent awards for space consideration, and because how many people are going to care about what I wrongfully pick for Best Foreign Language winner (for the record, I’m going with The Salesman because it’s poster looked all kinds of intense). Starting with the supporting performers, I’m going to name Mahershala Ali as the winning supporting actor nominee for Moonlight. I haven’t seen any of the films in this category, but based on the description I read, this does sound like the kind of affecting performance that would win over the Academy. Over on the supporting actress side of things, I’m going with Michelle Williams for Manchester By The Sea. Everything I’ve heard points at this as being a pretty great film that pushes the right buttons in people, and Ms. Williams has four nominations behind her already, so I’m thinking 2017 might finally be her year. I’m thinking best

actor and actress are probably going to go to the pair from La La Land -- Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone -because they both took home those trophies at the Golden Globes (or at least they did in the musical or comedy category) and La La Land is getting all kinds of mad buzz. I’m also going with La La Land as the best picture winner. I realize that Manchester By The Sea is probably the more dramatic option, but I feel like, giving the fact that there’s a likely madman in the White House, the Academy might want to focus on something a bit more flashy and upbeat, like a musical. Also, all the buzz. Damien Chazelle is also probably going to take the director’s trophy for La La Land because, even just from the trailers I’ve seen, the movie is goddamn beautiful to look at. That probably means a

cinematography award too. This is sort of boring, isn’t it? I could have just written the words La La Land over and over again to pretty much the same effect. I do want to point out, for anyone who might be interested in my thoughts about a movie that I have actually seen, I watched Arrival just the other day and it was fucking phenomenal, and having not seen La La Land, it would definitely be my choice of best picture. It’s one of those rare science fiction pictures that really cares about the science, and also leaves you with complex existential questions to ponder when you’re done with it. Does La La Land do that? I mean, maybe it does. It could. I wouldn’t know. Oh, here’s one more, a bonus prediction: Makeup and Hairstyling will go to Star Trek Beyond because it’s really hard to make aliens without really good makeup. The Academy Awards will air on February 26 at 4pm, assuming the world hasn’t ended by then. Sadly, the end of the world is notoriously hard to predict, even when you’re living in a dystopian science fiction novel. Kamloops author Dennis Staginnus recently held a book launch event for his new novel The Emerald Dagger at the library of the Beattie Elementary School. This is book is the second of The Raiders of Folklore series which started in The Eye of Odin. The books feature young adult adventures set against the backdrop of Norse mythology. Dennis read from his books and took questions from the crowd. Many of the attendees seemed eager to get at the heart of what inspired him and what led him to his use of Norse mythology in particular. “I’ve always had quite the wild imagination,” said Dennis. “When I was younger we lived in Revelstoke outside of the city, it was hard to get together with friends and play, so you start living inside your head, you build a great imagination.” But it wasn’t until years later that he started putting some of the ideas from his imagination down on paper. As he explained, he had started to love reading again, in part thanks to the work of Michael Crichton. But it was someone else who actually inspired him to start working. “Steven Spielberg came out with a movie in 2008 from a franchise that I loved quite a bit called Indiana Jones, and then in 2008 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out. And being a fan of the franchise, and then seeing that, it was terrible. “I left the movie theatre going, no, no, this isn’t how that kind of story

“I found that the stories from norse mythology, from the vikings, they lend themselves to easily to writing stories. I said, ‘Ooh, this is an awesome part, I can include this,’ I didn’t even have to make anything up, it’s actually right there.” — Dennis Staginnus

can end. So I go, why don’t I just start writing my own stories?” His first novel, The Eye of Odin, took David about four years to complete. Its follow up, The Emerald Dagger took only a year and a half. “So I am getting faster,” he says. Dennis explained that he found himself steered towards writing about Norse mythology because adventure novels involving many of the other mythologies had already found their way into book stores. And there was a bit of genetic connection for him too. “I am from northern Germany, there is some viking ancestry in my ancestry. “Not only that, when I did my research, I found that the stories from norse mythology, from the vikings, they lend themselves so easily to writing stories. I said, ‘Ooh this is an awesome part, I can include this,’ I didn’t even have to make anything up, it’s actually right there.

“They are trying to find the Eye of Odin, and if you know viking mythology, Odin, he gave up his eye in order to learn about the future, when Ragnarok or the end of the world was coming, so that in itself again is a huge plot point, and I took it straight out of mythology.” WIth two books already behind him, Dennis has more on the way, hopefully by the end of 2017. “There will be a third book coming out this year, but it’s not the number three. It’s going to be a prequel book based on short adventures, it’s going to be four short stories based on the main characters from the series. And I’m hoping that’s going to be out by about October.” You can pick up copies of both his novels at Chapters or at Amazon, and electronic copies are available at the popular online retailers like Amazon, Kobo, and Apple. For more information about Dennis and his work visit his web site at http://www. dennisstaginnus. com/

TAURUS (Apr. 21- may 21) Talk to superiors about problems that you feel are getting out of hand. Partners may try to argue with you; however, you must stand your ground. You'll look guilty if you don't lay your cards on the table. Do a little investigating if there is someone at work you don't trust. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Be careful not to push your luck or take too much for granted when dealing on either a personal or professional level. Limitation could set in if you've been spending too much. Friends may not be completely honest with you. Be very careful while in transit or while traveling in foreign countries. CANCER (June 22-July 22) It's time to reconnect with some of the people you used to know. Career changes may not be your choice right now, but in the long run they will be to your advantage. You may be sensitive to a point of absurdity. The locks, stove, gas, or electric wires may not be secure. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Get the red tape and the unwanted paperwork out of the way. You will earn recognition for the work you are doing. Try not to be too lavish with your lover. You may find yourself in a predicament with family members.

HOROSCOPE

VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Short trips to visit others will do the whole family a world of good. Real estate investments could be to your advantage. You will reap the benefits if you put money into upgrading your residence. Don't involve yourself in the emotional problems of those you work with. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Make sure that you have all the pertinent facts before taking action. You need a change of pace. You can have quite the romantic ad venture if you take time to get to know your mate all over again. Avoid any gossip and be careful that you aren't misinterpreted. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Sudden changes concerning coworkers may surprise you. Your positive attitude and intellectual outlook will draw others to you. Don't jump the gun; you may find yourself getting angry at the wrong person. Don't lend or borrow. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Controversial subjects should be avoided at all costs. Misunderstandings could cause confusion and upset. You will find your vitality is lowered. It might be best to work on your own; if possible, do your job out of your home this week. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) You have made an accurate assessment of the situation and have come up with ideas that will save money. Your partner may be somewhat irritable this week. Use your quick wit to win points and friends. Children may pose a problem if they don't like suggestions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You may be frazzled this week. You must be extremely careful not to let relatives or friends interfere in your personal life. You will easily capture the interest of those you talk to. Make plans to do the things you enjoy.

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Try to keep an open mind. Listen to the advice given by others. You can make money if you get involved in real estate deals. When the work is done, they may serve you for a change.

How to handle a boyfriend who is fresh out of jail Our very own Ethical Bastard takes your questions about love, sex, and relationships, and gives you the straight goods on what ails you. Not your typical ‘Dear Abby’, our fella is trained and practiced in disciplined analytics. He is committed to equality and fairness without being subject to either feminist or MRA dogma (although he understands it). He’s an anomaly. A renaissance man. The modern male. Kink and sex-positive, and open for discussion. And while we think he’s pretty kick-ass, his advice is meant as points to ponder, not as a means to live by. Accept it, or don’t, at your own risk. Don’t forget to send your own questions in! You can do so at drbastard@ themixkamloops.com, or send us a message on our Facebook page. There are a bunch of anonymous email senders, we dig www.guerrillamail. com, but the options are endless.

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) You may find that you're being used. Short trips will prove to be more fruitful than you imagined. Do your own thing and everything will settle down. Compromise if you wish to have any fun at all.

Dear Bastard My boyfriend is just getting out of jail, and we will be living together for the first time once he gets out. My family doesn’t know where he has been, I’ve told them he had to move away for a year for work. I am worried about them finding out and I’m worried about how we are going to get along with all the restrictions that he has to have on him for the next couple of years. How can I juggle wanting to be with him, I love him, and keeping his past mistakes hidden?

By The Ethical Bastard drbastard@

themixkamloops.com *Ethical Bastard may not be as illustrated

— From a worried woman Dear Worried: I’m not sure it’ll be possible to make a relationship work (not easy under good circumstances) with all the restrictions, *and* keep it all on the d/l. I understand the hell that family can inflict if they don’t like your choices — but (we’ll assume) you’re a grown woman, and those choices are your right. It’s easy to say and hard to do, but I think you might need to forego the secrecy. You don’t need to take out a billboard, but when the time comes, you can say, yes, my man has made some mistakes, but he’s done his time and he’s in the right track — I believe in him and us. Don’t get sucked into long justifications or explanations: that’s just rope you’ll trip on or worse later. Short and sweet. The result will be misery, maybe. That can test your center, big

time. But that center will get stronger and more grounded for it. And your man, who could probably use an ally, will see that you are his. That’ll give you a good footing to negotiate the coming years as partners. Your family will get over it or they won’t. Some might even respect you for walking a hard road. Stick with those people. If you think they won’t get over it, you have to decide what you’ll give up to keep them. He might have to go. That’s a legitimate decision. Whichever way you choose, them or him, do it like you mean it. Slinking around isn’t sustainable; you’d just be wasting everybody’s time, and you and he will most likely come up empty-handed in the end. If you choose him and the whole thing fails you’ll hear some I told you so, but you can handle that. Eyes up, own the error, move on. Do not discuss details with those who want to beat you over the head with it. If in the end you find that you don’t get (or want) to keep him, or if you decide to leave him and keep your family, you still get to keep the confidence and self-respect that comes of doing hard things with commitment and integrity. If you stay together, that commitment and integrity will earn you his respect too — which is what you need to go the distance. — E.B.
