We’ve been duped, Coleman says as Liberals get ‘Plecas-ed’ Provincial politics the last three months has been an unprecidented political circus. The first two days around the fall session were worse.

“We’ve been duped,” said Rich Coleman to be avoided trampled by 20 odd journalists.

A Friday 9:30 am caucus meeting of the BC Liberal Party was missing Darryl Plecas.

“He’s sitting in the legislature by himself.”

Plecas, a former prison judge, left some MLAs gobsmacked by taking a $150,000 paycheck as Speaker of the House job, making him the non-voting, non-partisan chair of the legislature.

The move handed the NDP-Green alli-

ance a three-seat majority with Liberals looking to elect the MLA seat left vacant by Christy Clark.

Coleman called the move a double cross, noting Plecas had previously said he would remove his name for

consideration.

Another MLA that morning said the move reeked of a desperation and selfishness.

“Some of the stuff he had been saying, he was getting a reputation for being high maintenance.”

The NDP reached out to Liberal through a handful of conversations ultimately converting Darryl to the Orange side of the House.

Premier John Horgan was quick to note he was not part of the recruit squad.

“I had no discussions with anyone outside of caucus,” he said noting the move will ensure four years of stable government in the province.

“It brings stability to the session, and is a symbol that it sends to BC that three parties can work together for government.”

Another Liberal was less impressed with the day.

Budget 2017 update talks Education, Mental Health, little on north While election promises have been left by the wayside, education and housing will see increases, as new taxes on business and top income earners were highline points falling out of the BC Government’s Budget 2017 update Monday.

Minster of Finance Carole James said Monday prudent economic decisions were built into the budget work being done thus far.

“We expect BC to lead, but we are also cautious. Prudence is built into this budget.” Consumer spending continues to be source of strength and we expect 4 percent growth in 2018 in BC retail sales.”Housing starts remain high and strong, the highest level in a decade. Compared to other provinces, our trade diversity is diverse. With exports heading to US, Japan, China, other Asia locations and around the world. $499 million has been earmarked to add 1,700 affordable housing units in BC, ad more than 2,000

modular homes for the homeless.

“These would include 24/7 staff and support services,” said Carol, noting $681 million increase for the K to 12 system.

“We feel this is critical. We are committing to fully funding one of the larger budget changes since February,” she said. Another $322 million has been dedicated to a fentanyl response plan and $25 million to establish a Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction.

James said on many fronts, the Greens and NDP were close in policy.

“We share common values with the Greens - the difference is sometimes the path we take on how to get there.”

A $400 renters rebate and $10 a day daycare are still commitments, said James on Friday.

“It is time to carve a path our to begin investing in the province and the people.

The theme of a new Mental Health Ministry that can work with other ministries, health, education, child and families, for example, is great idea. It is about access. Right now there is just not enough services to go around,” said Gutray after the Budget update was released.

“We will be moving forward and earlier prevention and intervention creation. A public system with a focus of when someone asks for help, get it to him or her fast.

South Peace MLA Bernier said the Budget was as predicted.

“Most of the announcements are re-announcements.”

While questioned about a lack of attention to northern BC, Premier John Horgan said softwood lumber and wildfire suppression and prevention funding were in the books.

Bernier added a third to the list.

corners of the city, to the seafood I don’t ever normally eat, it is indeed a different world on the island.

Legislature actions get yelled throughout a hostel bar blocks away days later.

From voters on both sides of Government and decisions. Others are asking how did they do that, what did they do? And how?

You leave the office at 5 p.m. and make your way out to the staff parking lot. You see something sitting on the hood of your car, but cannot determine what is in the oddly shaped package.

Your friend Marg calls and says she has a present for you, can she stop by and drop it off.

Don’t open the door, don’t let Marg come into the house. Get in your car without touching the package and drive off, swerving wildly to remove the package from the hood.

It’s that time of year so it’s probably...zucchini!

Zucchini: the herpes of the garden vegetable family. Everyone is trying to get rid of it right now.

“You can make such great things with zucchini,” your coworker says as she deftly reaches around you and drops one in

your purse. My question is, if you can make such great things, with zucchini then why is everyone trying to get rid of them?

It wouldn’t be so bad if they would give you the things they created with the zucchini, but no, all you get is the darn zucchini. most efficient source of power that anyone can make. Like wind, solar can also be integrated with existing hydro, storing unneeded energy behind the dams and releasing it when needed.

IN CONCLUSION Integrating our rich wind and solar resources into our existing hydro capacity will more than meet future energy needs by enhancing our existing hydro electric infrastructure while eliminating the need for future dams like Site C. Rather than one huge, costly mega project, allowing wind and solar to naturally expand rather

than holding them back will provide long-term growth and permanent jobs rather than the boom and bust cycles of mega projects.

Working in the renewable energy field for the last 14 years in this province has been like getting stuck in the 20th century while the 21st century leaves us behind.

Yet the people of BC are ready for change. It’s time for BC to catch up. It’s time for this province to enter the 21st century.

Site C is now under review Don

PETTIT As a loyal Watt’s Happening reader you are no doubt well aware that the Site C dam project on the Peace River is under review by the BC Utilities Commission. Public submissions to the Commission were welcomed until September 30th. (An initial report is to be published on Sept. 20 followed by a further submission opportunity and final report on Nov. 1).

Following is an edited version of the Peace Energy Cooperative submission to the BCUC. Specifically it addresses their term of reference part D: “What portfolio of generating projects and demand-side management initiatives could provide similar benefits (to Site C)?”

WIND AND WATER A total of approximately 600 megawatts (MW) of wind power are presently operational in this region, with another 2000 MW waiting to be developed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Estimates suggest the Peace Region has some 10,000 MW of readily developable wind energy.

This wind resource is some of the best in the world, featuring a power capacity factor (PCF) of 40%-plus. (PCF is a way of comparing different energy sources. It is a measure of how much power a given facility actually produces allowing for repairs, downtime and overall system efficiency. BC Hydro states that the Site C dam PCF will be approximately 60%.)

The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) has submitted a study to BC Hydro explaining how up to 3000 MW of wind power could be successfully integrated into existing hydropower, improving the efficiency and reliability of both, while conserving our precious water/energy resource.

This proposal was ignored by the previous government, which at the same time reduced and then eliminated their calls for clean power from IPPs. As a result, the rapidly expanding BC wind industry ground to a virtual halt, and CanWEA summarily left the province.

If and when (and that’s a big IF) the province needs more energy, allowing the wind industry to expand while integrating it with the existing hydropower would supply us well into the future with excellent base-load reliability plus a new and expanding wind industry and related long-term jobs.

SOLAR Peace Energy Co-op has been engaging the public by conducting solar public information sessions and providing open house solar tours while installing dozens of rooftop grid-tied solar arrays for homeowners, small businesses and municipalities in the BC Peace.

We are astounded by the response we have been receiving.

Interest in solar is growing exponentially in this province, following a world-wide trend that has placed solar in the lead as the fastest grow-

ing energy source on the planet, driven by the unprecedented economic benefits provided by this technology and fueled by its rapidly decreasing costs.

Although BC Hydro is to be congratulated on the simplicity and efficiency of their grid-tie, net metering system for small energy producers, beyond that, solar energy has been largely ignored. Since selfproduced power is power that BC Hydro does not have to create, this seems a strange oversight.

A day in the life of a Peace Region MLA at Parliament When South Peace MLA Mike Bernier is not in this riding, you can often find him behind the wheel of a 1985 Fiero

You can catch MLAs working late into the night, then back the next morning before 7 am if need be.

The typical day indeed was a rough 7 to 7 when in Government, says Bernier.

He notes the mechanics are different when with a portfolio as a cabinet minister. Now he finds himself sitting on Opposition.

Regardless of where an MLA sits or what colour their party is - none are to leave the building when a session sits.

While slightly pomp and circumstantial, MLAs are to be given always an unfettered path to the hallowed hall of the inner chambers. If you are in the House, don’t leave.

“If you are in the bathroom and the bell is rung for a vote, you have minutes before they lock the doors.”

One time I was just out front saying bye to some peo-

ple and one of the Legislative Assistants ran out and said ‘no you got to come into the building.’ I was outside for a grand total of a minute, says North Peace MLA Dan Davies.

Davies was in a government MLA office for just a little bit longer - a week or so. His Opposition office is smaller in stature, with a slightly lesser scenic view of the inner harbor (read, none) and is hidden deep in the Legislature.

If Davies’ office is buried, one could say Bernier’s seems lost in the bowels of the building. He admits it is certainly a different frame going from Government cabinet position to sitting in Opposition.

“As a minister you have half a dozen staff working research, other matters. Now as the health critic, I’m given a binder. ‘Here’s the background’,” Bernier says.

He had three offices as education minister and a fourth as MLA in DC. A Ministry office in the Legislature, one downtown

with Ministry staff in the Education building and another in Vancouver.

This comes along with the day-to-day work of holding a constituency office more than 1,000 km away.

“There are always have local calls and concerns coming from the constituency as an active MLA,” he says adding the work can be well out of scope as an MLA in Victoria, but completely within the frame and theme of South Peace.

“Sometimes it is not a government discussion (and solution), but it certainly a community one.”

Bernier talks about the difference being on the other side of the floor.

“It’s about relative and relevant questions that don’t flounder - and have a direction,” he notes.

Floundering?

“Sometimes you have questions with no flow, no theme..

Floundering.”

Davies says as a proverbial new man on Legislative campus, he is all about looking forward. Bernier concurs.

“We’ve all heard about, ‘if they were in, this is what they would do.’ Now, they are in.

Where is the plan. They’ve had the time. Being in Opposition, it is about all of a sudden there is an announcement on portables in Vancouver. Okay, what does that mean for a school project in the Peace?

Into the coal chamber with Cox

He’s new the position and ready to rap the word about the mining industry. Bryan Cox is the President & CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia.

“It is an opportunity to help tell the story of this industry,” he says of the position.

Cox was in Tumbler Ridge over the weekend for the Northeast Coal and Energy Forum.

Cox acknowledges the divide that comes with coal - like many issues in British Columbia, lines can be drawn based on proximity, or the coast vs. the north.

“There is a global divide going that way on many topics, but I think mining is unique because we have an opportunity to knit the province together. Our operations are often rural in nature, but our suppliers are really everywhere throughout BC. Cox was selected as the Association’s new President & CEO in May of this year, after joining MABC as Vice President of Corporate Affairs in 2014.

He said Tumbler Ridge is another opportunity for ourselves, and the public to continue to build a dialogue.

He said conversation would help build bridges.

“Discussions are pretty easy to

have,” he says.

“The key to why we are here is we are trading against global associations and we are trying to be competitive.

Steel making coal is a bread and butter of north east, but commodities are what they are.”

Cox noted business is ups and downs.

“The trick is to be in control, as competitive as we can, but there is a cyclical nature to the industry.”

He said sunny days were on the way.

“We have weathered the storms and we have an incredible opportunity. We can build on it right now for the future of BC mining. Think of 11 tons of coal for a wind turbine. We can continue to be proud and be a leading producer, and a choice for the world markets.

FCC helps drive away hunger at McLeod School Farm Credit Canada launched their annual Drive Away Hunger by contributing $100,000 to school meal programs across Canada, including $1,000 for McLeod School just outside of Dawson Creek on the way to Chetwynd.

Relationship manager with FCC Debbie Garrison was on hand from FCC, as was Laurel Piper.

Garrison said FCC was looking for more ways to support those working to help alleviate hunger.

FCC offices across Canada are now collecting food and cash donations until October 13.

The launch precedes Hunger Awareness Week from September 18-22, 2017, which aims to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in Canada.

One hundred per cent of donations go to Canadian food banks, and anyone can visit www.fccdriveawayhunger.ca to make a monetary donation.

“FCC is in a unique position to bring together Canada’s agriculture community to share the food it produces with those who need it most,” Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay said in a statement.

Danyelle Dutka, principal at McLeod said the monies would be going towards breakfast and lunches, snacks for students.

“Some kids forget their lunch, others have a long bus ride if they are the first picked up and sometimes need a boost.”

He’s looking at running for the leader of the MB Liberal Party – but he hasn’t officially made a decision yet.

MLA Mike Bernier is examining the pros, cons, and potential, of a leadership run.

“I’m looking at the possibility and examining support,” he says.While the ?? session of the legislature kicked off this week; Bernier may be looking to add more dates to his schedule.

He said the leader of the party will be a key election.

“The important matter to remember with leadership, is it is all about listening. There is a diversity in population and the opinions of British Columbians, and we as a party have to recognize what we are doing wrong,” says Bernier.

“We have lost empathy. We

have a strong economy not to just have a strong economy, but to build other programs, social programs for example.

We should be looking at why we made certain moves and decisions and not what we decided.

Bernier expects to make an official decision, either to run as for Liberal Party leadership or not, within the next few days.

He notes regardless of his decision on the matter, the right candidate for the Liberal party.

“Leadership is (about) listening and who now is the right mix to run and the direct personality to run against John Horgan for Premier.”

Frank Burkitt was one of the many workers on the dam in the late 60s in Hudson’s Hope. While he’s since passed away, his sons, Grant and Stan Burkitt, followed in their father’s footsteps working at the G.M. Shrum Generating Station.

which Stan says is a testament to the town’s community mindedness.

Hudson’s Hope was almost like a work camp, but better.

Everyone worked at the dam, and everyone lived in the community. Lasting friendships were formed both in town and at the dam.

Frank was a carpenter at the Bennett Dam and Stan said some of his father’s best and longest friendships was made on his first day.

“He started in the powerhouse…and on that first day is where he met his closest friends for several years in our small town,” said Grant. “One was his foreman and one was a guy who started the exact same day as him.”

During the boom cycle of the dam’s construction, the Hudson’s Hope school peaked at 800 students— which is more than the current population of the community.

The Bennett Dam is currently in a refurbishment stage, as Grant says staff are replacing larger pieces of equipment on a yearly basis now, and the rip rap is 70 per cent placed.

“That’s common for every dam, a generator can only last for so long,” he said.

The W.A.C. Bennett Dam officially came online on Sept. 28, 1968.

DC Golf and Country club crowns 2017 champions The Dawson Creek Golf and Country Club held their 2017 Club Championship tournament on Sept. 9 and 10, and Brad Arnt was crowned king. It was a very successful tournament, with 60 players coming to play.

Arnt won the men’s championship flight with a score of 79-,6.

The men’s net champion was Tokey Robers with a score of 71,73.

A very windy Sunday afternoon bumped up most of the scores on Sept. 10, keeping things entertaining and close.

The winner of the Wes Harper Memorial putting trophy for least amount of putts taken was also Arnt, with 58 putts.

The other winners were Peggy Moch with the ladie’s super senior division with a score of 88,85. Esther Bachelor was the net winner

The Dawson Creek Junior Canucks have been extremely busy the past week and a half. After wrapping up camp over the Labor Day weekend, the team kept right at it with a 5-4 victory over the Sexsmith Vipers on Sept. 8 in Dawson Creek. Lastly, the team held a golf tournament at Farmington Fairways on Sept. 10.

The team had 30 players come out to camp, and it was very promising, according to Colby Wagar, the Junior Canucks general manager.

“The boys were very excited and looking forward to the game,” Wagar said.

The players did not disappoint the crowd of about 300, as they played very well and took it to the Vipers all game along. But the Vipers hung around, each time the Canucks scored, so would Sexsmith.

The Canucks were up by a score of 3-2 headed to the third, after Griffin Young scored the go ahead goal.

Sexsmith would tie the game early in the third, but Wesley Shipton took the lead once again with a beautiful goal on a mini break, deking the goalie out to put the team up 4-3. But once again that lead would only last for a minute.

It was a refreshing face that scored the game winning goal with only a minute and 46 seconds left as Scott Fisher netted it. Fisher broke his jaw last season and hadn’t played since January, so it was real nice to see him get back into a game and perform well.

Wagar really liked the way the team

played, noting that Sexsmith had a big team that played “hit first, take the puck second hockey.” There was some first game jitters as well.

“I thought we outplayed them for the majority of the game,” Wagar said.

The Dawson Creek Minor Hockey Association has a referee shortage. Every year they could use help but this year they will be short on senior officials.

The first referee clinic of the year is set for Sept. 16. Clinic organizer Chad Spencer said it was too early to have registration numbers, but that there will be lots of younger referees around the 12 to 13 year old range.

But it is for the older officials that do the bantam and midget games where there is a lack.

“We always need guys that can do the older games. We’ve ran into a lot of problems where guys that could do the games now say they can’t do them, and we get desperate and have to bring in officials from out of town,” Spencer said. “There’s no signs of anything get-

ting better.”

One problem that arises because of the shortage is it becomes hard to hold tournaments for the older ages because of the lack of refs.

Another highlight was the play of goalie Simon Bower, who played his first ever game at the junior B level. He played a real steady game for his first time out.

As for the golf tournament, it was everything the team hoped it would be.

86 people came out to it, and the team had lots of positive feedback. Wagar’s wife Leslie organized the event in only a week and a half.

“One of my highlights was seeing the boys enjoy it. The people they were golfing with loved them, and it gets that community presence out there.”

The tournament was both a fundraiser and a means of integrating the team more with the community. Wagar said there were lots of people that had never gone to a Junior Canucks game that now cannot wait to go to the next one because they know someone on the team.

The next exhibition game for the Junior Canucks is a tilt against the Beaverlodge Blades on Sept. 15 at 8 pm in Dawson Creek. The next day, Sept.

16, they take on the Fairview Flyers in Fairview at 8:30 pm. sports@dcdn.ca

Referee shortage in DC Something they will be doing, however, is trying to retain the younger officials so that they continue to officiate as they get older.

“Our biggest goal is trying to encourage people to come out. Anybody that can step in to do some older kids right away would be a huge help to our association.”

Dawson Creek Seals Swim Club wrap their year

It’s a wrap, as the Dawson Creek Seals Swim Club finished their season with the B.C. Summer Swimming Association Provincial Championships in Kamloops. The meet ran Aug. 14 to 20.

12 swimmers participated from Dawson Creek. They all posted personal best times in almost every race they competed in, according to Carolyn Huttema, club president.

There were some medals won as well.

Tour de North

The 2017 Tour de North began this week, and there are two riders from the South Peace taking part. Paramedic Zoe Moshansky from Dawson Creek and media rider Trent Ernst from Tumbler Ridge are the two local riders cycling for the good cause of raising money for kids with cancer.

Moshansky grew up in the Okanagan Valley and would ride with the tour as they came through her town as a six year old. A resident of Dawson Creek since 2014, she loves her job as a paramedic because it allows her to help people. She considers the tour an incredible opportunity to help inspire others.

She raised 100 per cent of her goal, and $3, 718 in total.

Ernst is the former editor and publisher of the Tumbler Ridge News, and he calls himself a cancer sandwich.

He raised 10 per cent of his

goal, bringing in $4,278.

The event began Sept. 12 in Williams Lake, and the group made their way to Quesnel. Over the next four days they will make their way up through Prince George and Mackenzie, before making the trip from Chetwynd to Fort St. John on Sept. 17. On Sept. 18, they will make the final trek from Fort St. John to Dawson Creek.

The crew stops in each community to connect with citizens and children. The Tour de North is a part of Cops for Cancer, which raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society in hopes to get rid of cancer and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

This year, Cops for Cancer has raised $149, 101. sports@dcdn.ca

Be prepared to tap your way into the DC fall

For anyone looking to get into the swing of things in Dawson Creek – here’s the story to tap into.

Mandy Steward recently moved back to DC from the coast, where she picked up a passion for swing dance, and jazz.

“It was one of those things I was introduced to, and just thought it was ‘jive’ then learned about the sub culture and community around dancing and music. It made sense,” she says.

Steward defines swing as a style of dance from swing style of jazz music in the 1920s1950s.

“During the swing era, there were several of styles of swing dancing: Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Charleston, Rockabilly Jive, etc. Today the most well-known of these dance is the Lindy Hop, which originated in Harlem in the early 1930s.”

While on the coast Steward discovered the Suburban Swing club located in Abbotsford, BC, and says she was mentored by professional dancer Benjamin Ricard.

“He started a school in Vancouver where I taught as an instructor, and was a part of its swing team for performances, demonstrations, and competitions,” she says.

“If you want to learn to dance better, you talk and dance with the best and better dancers, there is no better way.”

Steward has started a Mile Zero Jitterbugs class, beginning with adult swing classes out of KPAC earlier this year.

She says the swing dance community in DC is on the grow. Steward will be offering beginner Lindyhop and beginner Rockabilly jive classes starting October.

Steward is attacking the scene with many arrows in the quiver. She is on the hunt for local venues looking to host social dance evenings and events.

“I am working with new local venues like District co., and Iron Relics also with local musicians to put on social dance nights with a drop in beginners lesson,” she says.

The idea is to learn, or watch others learn before the live music starts for people to come out and socialize, or try something new.

An evening is planned for Oct 14th at District co.

Steward says you don’t need to be a dancer, or look a certain way to take up swing dancing.

“We come from all walks of life, there is no ability needed, we are all here learning.

We’re really looking for everyone from 16 to 80,” she says. editor@dcdn.ca

Eric Alfred Kuenzl June 26. 1957 - July 21, 2017

Eric Alfred Kuenzl lost a courageous five year battle with cancer on July 21, 2017. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 30 years, Sheree Myers - Kuenzl, stepchildren Danielle Temple and her husband Ken, Lindsay Myers and her husband Dale Arndt, Chad Myers and his wife Tammie and numerous beloved grandchildren. Eric also leaves his dear cousin Rob Kuenzl and his wife Kathy.

Eric was a lifelong member of the Dawson Creek and Toms Lake community. He was born in Dawson Creek on June 26, 1957 in what was then the St. Joseph’s Memorial Hospital to parents Anton and Eleanora, joining big brother Glen and big sister Helen, all of whom predeceased him.

Eric’s dad was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He instilled his love of the outdoors in Eric, teaching him bush craft, fishing and hunting skills. Eric maintained his love for these activities throughout his life. He was second to none in terms of his hunting and fishing skills. Eric and Dale were inseparable hunting partners who were as one person when on the hunt. Their skill always ensured a successful hunt for both families. Eric would bring his extraordinary stamina to these activities, sometimes walking comfortably through the bush for days on end.

Eric was more than just a hunter and fisherman. He recognized the need for conservation.

Several years ago, when a baby moose lost its mother, Eric created an enclosure on his property that allowed the moose to survive the harsh winter months. Eric’s kindness to animals extended to his beloved dog Rain, who was always at his side.

Eric attended Dawson Creek Elementary School, Central Junior High School and then South Peace Secondary School where he graduated in 1975. Eric brought his enthusiastic personality to bear on many interests. He was a fierce competitor at tennis, playing at the provincial level and beating players who were often 4 to 5 years older than him. Eric was a talented musician. In addition to playing piano, trombone and saxophone, he sang in a school choir which won many awards in provincial competitions.

Following graduation, Eric studied auto body repair at Northern Lights College and at Camosun College in Victoria. In Victoria, Eric shared an apartment with his good friend Bob Craig, who also attended Camosun College. He loved swimming at Thetis Lake and Matheson Lake where his laugh could always be heard across the water. In the 1970s, foosball was still new. Eric brought the same skills and determination to this game as he had to tennis and generally owned the table for the duration of the evening if he chose to do so.

Following graduation from Camosun College, Eric moved to Calgary, where he found work in a sheet metal shop. He took advantage of the proximity to McMahon Stadium and could be relied on to attend the CFL games, where he generally cheered for anyone except the Stampeders. Eric loved football and continued to follow it all of his life. As a fan of the New England Patriots, he generally finished each season a happy man.

Despite liking Calgary, Eric soon missed the north and knew that auto body work was his true calling. He said goodbye to his friends and returned to Dawson Creek. Eric loved to work with his hands. He could envision a project and create beauty out of metal. Cars would come in as wrecks and go out as masterpieces. Beautifully restored automobiles and handmade knives remain in the Dawson Creek area as a testament to his skill and dedication.

Eric began his career in auto body, working for Bud Hunter. Several years later he moved on to Russ’ Body Shop, N&N Autobody and the body shop at Aspol Motors. Later in his career, Eric opened his own business at Toms Lake. After his illness prevented Eric from continuing in auto body, he found employment with Danny Wilson at Mountain View Safety, which he loved and for which he was grateful.

Eric loved the open road. He and Sheree spent many happy hours in their motorhome, travelling to quiet places where they could visit friends and contemplate the beauty of nature. He would convince anyone he could, to “go RVing.”

Eric responded to his illness with his customary good humour, courage and determination. He would endure long flights to the lower mainland for treatment. During his visits to Vancouver, he would stay at the Jean C. Barber Lodge, a facility for cancer patients. Many of the residents would be down. Eric would have none of that. He would exhort them out into the world and his good humour soon had everyone laughing.

During his final days, many close friends, including Allan Robinson, Kevin Cowan and Pat Sales came to see him. Eric always had a strong handshake and a ready smile for his friends. One night during his treatment, Eric looked up at the starry sky and said, “I love life.” He sure did. Eric leaves a hole in the lives of the many friends and family who loved him but his memory will endure. The world lost a good one in Eric Kuenzl.

Sheree and the family would like to extend their deep thanks to Dr. Burger and to the dedicated nurses and staff on the palliative care ward at Dawson Creek Hospital. Sheree extends special thanks to Rob, Kathy and to Darcie Franks who drove her to visit Eric during his hospitalization.

They always lent their strength and kindness, on which Sheree depended during this sad time.

Sheree would particularly like to thank good friends Doug and Shelli Henschel and Mel Ridley for always being there for Eric in his final days.

Eric chose not have a funeral but hopes that his family and friends will have an opportunity to be together, raise a glass and remember their times together.

DYKE, Spencer Harold Richard Aug 15, 1946 − Aug 26, 2017 Tom Sawyer country boy. High school slacker. RCAF two years. West coast logger three years. Hippie dreamer three years. Married a woman from Paris. Got educated, drove the Alaska Highway to Fort Nelson in 1979. Taught 6 years. Drove South to Chetwynd, taught one year. Drove east to Dawson Creek. Three kids. Taught 15 years. First day of school each year: "You can call me Mr. Dyke, the Canoe Master, or Sir. I like ’sir’ the best. Any questions? No? Okay, let’s get started". Students are complicated. Made thousands of mistakes, but had thousands of good times. Retired early at 55, travelled eight years throughout the world, 77 countries. Wrote hundreds of stories. Lived, loved, and worked 5 years in China. At 65, hung his hat in Victoria and watched world pass by, aging, keeping hope alive. His motto was "Rust never sleeps".

At his request, a memorial will be held at a later date. Donations in Spencer’s honour may be made to 360Kids, supporting homeless youth, at http://bit.ly/2xxi9LH. Appreciations and funny anecdotes for his memorial may be sent to spencerdykememories@gmail.com.
