This option will be available for all eligible voters but our main focus is to provide Dawson Creek’s vulnerable population, including those in quarantine or self-isolation, a chance to vote in a safe manner.

The Mobile Voting stations that were held at the Rotary Manor Senior Citizens’ Home, the Rotary Village Senior Citizens’ Home, the Dawson Creek & District Hospital and the Heritage Heights Senior Citizens’ Complex will be replaced by the Mail Ballot Voting method for the 2020 By-election.

Junior Canucks set to open camp next weekend the Canucks camp, would have to quarantine before attending another one somewhere else.

The Fort St. John Huskies held their training camp last week and also had 30 skaters.

The Canucks had a young team last year and are expecting the same in 2020-21.

Dillon Giancola Sports Writer Better late than never, the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks training camp is a go at the Memorial Arena, September 26 and 27. Of course, the later than usual camp date won’t affect things as there is no official season start-date yet.

The Canucks are expecting 30 players to train and compete for a spot, with about 10 players returning. While 30 is less than they would normally get, the NWJHL asked its teams to cap camps to around 30 players as to limit the number of people at one place at a time, and to reduce the amount of players who would, after being cut at

Ezeard bows out, four in the running for DC by-election

“Last year we had the youngest we’ve ever had, with five kids 18 and under, still in school. It was a really good group and this year should be the same,” said Canucks GM Colby Wagar.

Goalie Matthew Enns is returning, leaving one spot open. Wagar said he invited four goalies to camp to compete for that spot. The team is anticipating some changes on the coaching side of things but no decisions have been made as of yet.

Soon after camp, exhibition games can take place (October 5 to 25, officially), though it remains to be seen who the Canucks can play, where, and how often. For the time being, Wagar said the club is focused on getting back on the ice first and foremost, and will go from there. sports@ahnfsj.ca The list of those interested in filling Blair Lekstrom’s seat has gotten a bit shorter.

Citing personal reasons - one name has withdrawn from the City of Dawson Creek by-election.

“Unfortunately I have had to writhdraw,” confirmed Wayne Ezeard last week to the Mirror.

Dawson Creek’s Eva Hutchinson named Van Lunen Fellow Tom Summer Dawson Creek Mirror Eva Hutchinson, Principal at Mountain Christian School has been selected for a 2020 – 2021 fellowship through the Van Lunen Center for Executive Management in Christian Schools at Michigan’s Calvin University.

The fellowship is entering its 13th year and brings together educators from 22 schools across the United States and Canada, and one from

Haiti.

The year-long cohort program is designed for school heads who seek professional development in their work as administrators of faith-based schools.

Due to COVID-19, all participants will be completing the sessions digitally this year, says Yvonne Ferwerda, director of the Van Lunen Center.

It’s expected that Hutchinson will complete an applied school project as part of the fellowship.

“It must be a project

that focuses on executive management skills, based on their educational background,” said Ferwerda. “She’s looking at a campus project.

Many of the projects are focused on a building project or capital campaign in order to do the building project.

Some are marketing and enrollment.”

Ferwerda added that projects will be refined and changed as the year progresses.

Monthly online sessions will be held in September, October,

and two online sessions in November 2020. It continues in January 2021 for five days, and ends with three days in July 2021.

Participant expenses are covered by the Van Lunen Center, including cost of instruction, lodging, meals, coaching and so on.

The Van Lunen Center was established at

Calvin University in 2007, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to provide world-class executive management training.

Continuing the Important Work of Being Your Voice in Ottawa

I was recently in Ottawa for the first in-person meeting of our Conservative caucus led by our new leader Erin O’Toole.

It was great to catch up with so many colleagues that I haven’t been able to see for months thanks to the Prime Minister shutting down regular sittings of Parliament in the spring and then proroguing Parliament until September 23.

I am looking forward to the coming weeks when our caucus will present our plan as a government in waiting to put hardworking Canadians first, lead our nation out of this crisis, and rebuild our great country.

While in Ottawa, I met with Richard Bragdon, our new Shadow Minister for Fisheries,

Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, regarding the challenges facing recreational fishing in Canada today. I also spoke about support for our outdoor recreational community and the need to balance the sustainable use of natural resources, societal and economic needs, and environmental protections.

This is especially true in our region, which has seen both the provincial NDP government and the federal Liberal government ignore the concerns of local leaders, businesses, residents, and our outdoor community when drafting caribou recovery plans.

The most recent example of the negative economic impact these plans are having on our region is the decision by CMH Heli-Skiing and Summer Adventures, a business that supports the outdoor recreational community, to withdraw its application to build a new heli-ski lodge in Castle Creek, south of McBride, due to the uncertainty surrounding caribou closures in the area.

This multi-million dollar project would have been an exciting addition to our region’s outdoor adventure tourism industry. Instead, we

are now seeing yet another casualty of the NDP provincial government and Liberal federal government’s shortsighted policies when it comes to caribou recovery.

Once again, we all want the caribou to survive and thrive, however I am deeply concerned about the longterm negative impact these caribou agreements will have on our region’s economic development.

These agreements were signed without any real consultation despite public outcry from local residents, businesses, and community leaders, myself included.

I am looking forward to continuing to work hard on the issues that matter most to our communities and finally getting back to what I hope are regular sittings in the House of Commons when Parliament resumes later this month.

Linda Studley Better at Home It might have been during an English class many years ago, but it’s a pretty good bet that everyone’s written at least one poem in their life. The problem that many of us had with writing poetry way back in school was that we usually were ‘graded’ on it. That’s a shame, really, because it denies the real reason for writing a poem.

Writing poetry is a form of creative selfexpression and if it pleases no one but yourself, it has done its job.

Form poetry can be a challenging, enjoyable way to start writing poetry. There are forms of all sizes and configurations. Here are some guidelines and suggestions to start you writing Haiku.

Haiku are three lines long. The first line has 5 syllables, the second has 7, and the third

has 5. Traditionally, haiku are related to the seasons and nature, with the last line diverging from the first two, highlighting a contrast of some kind. Use words that convey images (try not to add ‘the’ or ‘and’ just to pad the syllable count!).

The Japanese poet, Basho, famous for his haiku, wrote: “An old silent pond | A frog jumps into the pond | splash! Silence again.”

Or you can stray from the traditional and write about anything that appeals or suggests itself to you. Like this haiku, “Unprepared I walk | into this day, not knowing, | not needing to know.” written by Linda Studley.

Imagine receiving a personal invitation to a royal wedding, all expenses paid, everything covered. How would you regard that invitation? What kind of preparations would you make?

What kind of arrangements would you need in order not to miss such a momentous event? Would you care? Would you have better things to do? Are you unimpressed? Jesus left us a parable regarding this very thing, and it would seem that life and people haven’t changed. He went on to say that our invitation to the Kingdom of God is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son and sent messengers to call those that were invited, but they were unwilling to come. They each asked to be excused for various, yet seemingly practical reasons.

Apparently they were all too busy and preoccupied to break their life’s pace to be bothered with the inconvenience of making the preparations needed to attend the king’s son’s wedding feast.

What about us today? Each one of us has been issued an invitation into the Kingdom of God through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

And that invitation came at an unimaginable price. Jesus paid for it with His blood on the cross.

Dear friends, we will not simply waltz into His Heavenly Kingdom because we think we are basically good people and we deserve it.

How presumptuous is it to assume that we can take lightly the sacrifice of the Son of God and then expect that the invitation is still open to us? All the cares and concerns of

life, valid as they may be, should not overshadow our need to get right with God by having our sins forgiven through faith in the sacrifice of His Son. Therefore, as the writer of Hebrews expressed, “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, an let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” So let us take the invitation of God seriously and not miss the narrow gate to His Heavenly Kingdom through which we all are invited.

Routledge: Save our sheep By now all of us are familiar with the term pandemic. A pandemic is defined as an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people.

Although, pandemic may be a relatively new word in most of our vocabularies, there is another pandemic that has been going on for decades. Mycoplasma Ovipneumoniae (M.Ovi) is a pathogen that is affecting wild sheep herds across North America.

Just last month, another outbreak of M.Ovi was confirmed in one of the sheep herds in the Interior of British Columbia. This resulted in provincial wildlife officials having to kill two infected wild bighorn sheep lambs as a measure to save the rest of the herd.

Historically, there have been a number of multi-age die offs resulting in entire wild mountain sheep herds in BC getting wiped out because of M.Ovi. This disease is transmitted when wild sheep come in contact with domestic sheep or

goats. Domestic livestock usually carry this pathogen with no signs of infection and are typically immune to its effects. Once transferred to wild sheep, the effects of M.Ovi are devastating; the only method to control further spread is euthanizing the infected wild sheep as there has not been a successful vaccine discovered.

BC is home to four different species of wild sheep. The Stone’s Sheep is one of them and it is unique as it is only found in Northern BC. This gives us a global responsibility to look after this species so it doesn’t become the next Southern Mountain Caribou. Currently there are a number of programs that are monitoring the health status of Stone’s Sheep to determine if M.Ovi is present. Finding M.Ovi within the Stone’s Sheep population would be the last thing we as British Columbian’s would want to discover.

The Wild Sheep Society of BC is asking you — the public, the hunter, the non-hunter, the wildlife conservationists, and anyone who loves seeing wildlife on the

landscape — to visit its website to learn more. Please write letters to your local MLA, Agricultural Minister Lana Popham and to Premier Horgan. In the letter. outline your concerns for wild sheep that are dying from this disease and tell them the government is not taking appropriate action to address this issue. Then please contact our elected officials and request a meeting.

If we want wild sheep and other wildlife on the landscape, then we need to work together to get the message across that something needs to be done now. The Wild Sheep Society of BC respects the needs of domestic producers and recognizes the importance of this industry. Now more than ever, we need to work together to find a solution so both wilds and domestics can co-exist without massive die-offs like we have already experienced.

NICHOLS – the freedom to choose I had a deprived childhood.

No kidding. For 11 of my first 15 years I was under my parents’ exclusive tutelage. No school teachers’ dirty looks, no canes on my backside, no school-yard bullies, no TV and scant radio, and certainly no social media, so the values I absorbed were the values of a couple of adults who, from their old-fashioned, back-woods perspective, clearly understood their roles as parents in communicating to their children the skills and values they would need once they broke out into the wide, hostile, delightful, challenging, and wicked world.

Believe it or not, but my parents even taught me that there were no such beautiful little things as fairies with diaphanous, transparent wings – or hideous trolls crouching under bridges, or gentle elves shading in the ferns, or any other such mythical thing.

So my childhood was deprived of all those haunters of forest and glen. Even jolly old Santa could not get down our stove pipe.

Later, when I grew up, I learned that my parents were wrong at least about ferries.

Ferries do exist. I’ve sailed on them, prowled their decks, eaten their so-called food, leaned on the rails as whales sported in the waters beyond. Yes, ferries do exist; but I’ve never seen one with wings. As for trolls, elves, and other mythicals, my mature adulthood doesn’t really miss them.

Nor am I deprived.

That said, I am glad for growing up in the age and environment in which my parents saw fit to raise their children. We had everything we needed or wanted for mental and physical development.

And that said, I’m afraid that had we grown up in the now age and had the misfortune of falling into the clutches of the authorities for our truancy, our lives would have been sadly twisted. No authority would have approved my taking 36 months to do grade five.

a reckless family.

But we boys were having fun learning the things we wanted to learn.

I know, my parents didn’t exactly approve of my 36 months either but such was life then and there.

I did enter a regular grade 9 classroom in California with multiple teaching specialists about eight weeks before I turned 15 and I thrived. Life has never been the same.

Life doesn’t stay the same?

Skip lightly over a bunch of years to 2020.

That’s where we’ll be for the next few months.

Things are different now.

Parents have much less control over raising their children than my parents had when I was under their care and this is problematic. Indeed, I have distinct memories of the feel of a supple willow switch applied to my wet trousers by my mother’s vigorous right arm. The swift penalty helped me remember the rule: Stay away from the river unless I am with you. The natural penalty for the disobedience could have been fatal. I remember only one other such application of the willow switch.

It would seem that my parents had a definite care for their offspring and desired them to live past childhood.

It was a dangerous world even in those pristine days.

In 2020 such physical explanations or demonstrations of the rules are seen as child abuse and the child risks being removed from parental care and deposited to an uncertain future in foster care.

Was I abused? I submit, with evidence available, that those physical lessons did not constitute abuse of body or mind.

Aside from a few independent ideas, I’m as sane of mind and sound of body as they come these troubled days.

But happy I am that I am well past the age of raising children. Big brother’s sharp eyes and long arms are too ominously

obvious in 2020 – and getting more so according to reports you may read in alternate news sources. For an independent spirit the ties of family could be so easily sundered; to risk raising children according to one’s own wisdom and understanding is to risk losing them to the higher authority.

One does not have to wield the willow to be caught in the crosshairs of big brother.

To believe differently about current popular ideas might be reason enough to forfeit one’s parental rights.

Our freedom to choose according to our conscience defines our humanity and

governments of every stripe are feeling the pleasure of exercising increasing authority over our lives. On guard!

Cherish your freedoms and resist all efforts to have someone else’s values imposed on you or your family.

By the way, the Ancients taught this particular wisdom: “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Does it always work? No, but the chances for a good outcome are better if parents actually train their own children.

Tom Summer Renowned international horsemanship clinician Glenn Stewart is still hard at work on his ranch in Baldonnel, following his passion.

With more than 30 years of horse experience, Stewart conducts clinics worldwide and offers Horsemanship Camps varying in length from four days up to a month at his home The Horse Ranch.

With COVID-19 ever present in our new normal, Stewart says he’s focused much more on the digital and publishes training videos to members on the ranch’s private Facebook group.

“This spring when COVID hit and everything shut down, we finally got to some stuff that we’ve been talking about forever, but just never seem to have time for,” said Stewart. “So we stayed home and got our online courses going, the stages that we teach people.”

The ranch offers natural horsemanship training in ten stages, a methodology that teaches riders to build relationships with

horses through understanding their psychology and nature.

Stewart says members have found the videos invaluable.

“They can do it with online lessons, so they can do it at home,” said Stewart. “It’s been a real bonus.”

Overseas clinics are still booked for Brazil and Costa Rica in January, says Stewart. This year was planned to be one of the busiest for the ranch.

Roughly 100 to 200 people attend the ranch every year for training, including returning students. The ranch is also on the hunt for an event planner, an office assistant, and a working student.

Stewart says the ranch continues to promote a sense of community for those with the right attitude.

“We take on anybody with a good attitude,” said Stewart. “If they’re hungry and interested, it doesn’t matter if they’ve had horse experience or not. Horse experience helps, but it’s not a dealbreaker at all.” tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

Dojo reflects on both the old and new with new karate school Dillon Giancola Sports Writer When the COVID-19 pandemic forced sports groups across Dawson Creek to pause operations, the Tanshin Dojo was no exception.

As the pandemic went on, running the dojo wasn’t viable, and Sensei Bill Dufour saw this summer as a good time to retire from running a dojo after 25 years of instructing karate in Dawson Creek.

His retirement created a void in the community for a second karate dojo and kyokushin school (the Dawson Creek Kyokushin Karate Dojo run

by Mark Fonda being the other), and several of Dufour’s pupils teamed up to form two new dojos in an effort to carry on the Tanshin lineage and serve the community of Dawson Creek.

“With cover and everything that happened, I thought maybe it was time to step away. 25 years is a long time,” said Dufour.

Leading the charge are Rachelle Miller, Dryden and Ken Sempai, and Anna, who have started the Shinkyu Dojo of Kyukishin Karate out of the KPAC Centre.

“I’m hoping for them to carry on what was going on in our dojo. I have every confidence they’ll be able to do that, they are a great bunch of people,” Dufour said.

“We are a continuation of the karate we all have learned, and our goal is to help our students embrace the joy and passion we have found through it, and to understand and have access to international experiences, instructors, and the history,” Miller said. “We want people to understand this is something you can do your whole life. Karate can open doors you never thought possible, and give you great friendships and the ability to understand yourself and others.”

Miller said they will be teaching students in the traditional kyokushin style, with three age groups for people to be a part of. There is the red group for ages 6 to 11, the purple group for ages 12 to 16, and the adults group for people 17 and over.

Karate dojos traditionally put all people over the age of 13 into one big group, but Miller said they wanted to give the adults their own group, and allow teenagers to grow and learn help others in their age group before moving on.

“We know the kids are ready to move up, but now we want to see how they operate with 11 year olds, for example, instead of moving up and always being at the bottom, age-wise, of a class,” said Miller.

Dojo gives Dawson Creek a traditional karate experience with a competitive edge Dillon Giancola Sports Writer The other karate school to emerge from the closure of Tanshin is The Dojo, run by Mike Deleurme and Tracy Short.

“I have confidence (Deleurme and Short) will have a great dojo and do interesting things. Mike’s passion is competing and giving students the opportunity to do so,” Bill Dufour said.

Deleurme hopes to bring something a little different to the community from the other dojos.

Following Dufour’s retirement, Deleurme took some time to train at home and decide what he wanted to do gong forward.

“I want us to be a place for people to come and have a traditional experience, but also to come to train and fight. I want karate to be a lifestyle for our members, not something you try and quit after two years,” Deleurme said.

He knows all about coming back to the art after a time away. After growing up being a part of a Shodokan Karate dojo in lower-mainland B.C., and competing at a high level for a number of years, Deleurme took a break from karate when he moved to Dawson Creek for work in 1997. After a number of years away, and inspired by his then five-yearold child, Deleurme got back into karate and began training with Dufour. Now, he, his two children, and partner Short are hoping to bring that lifelong passion of karate to others.

“You may fall out of it a couple times, but you never quite quit, it always stays with you. It’s about having a balance in your life, building confidence and strength within yourself, and being a part of something,” Deleurme said.

For Deleurme and his family, it’s been a long six months away from training with other people together at a gym.

“I miss the people. You build a lot of camaraderie on those matts. I’m very excited to get back on the matts with both familiar and new faces, to get started, and do something good for the community of Dawson Creek,” Deleurme said.

Evaluate your herd for body condition - check Bovine Lameness Dr. Charlotte Corbett As cows come home from pasture, it is the perfect time to evaluate your herd for body condition, how well your calves have grown, lameness and pregnancy.

This is an excellent time to evaluate individual animals and decide whether or not they will stay in the herd.

Evaluating hooves are important for individual animal decisions, as well as their offspring’s potential and the overall health of the herd. There are many causes for lameness in cattle: these are a few of the most common ones.

Sole problems are common, especially with cows on rough, rocky terrain. Bruises, ulcerations and abscesses can occur.

The treatment for bruises and ulcerations is to remove the damaged tissue and

keep the cow dry and clean – either on pasture or in a heavily bedded pen. The most common lameness in cattle are sole abscesses.

Abscesses form when bacteria is able to get into the hoof from a defect in the protective hoof wall. The bacteria causes infection which increases pressure inside the hoof – this is the cause of the lameness. It is like hitting your fingernail with a hammer. The damage causes swelling below the fingernail. Releasing the pressure relieves the pain. The same treatment applies to cows – digging out the abscess is the most effective way of treating the lameness. Antibiotics will help but the abscess must be drained. Luckily, most of the time the abscess makes its own way out, bursting through the sole or coronary band. If left too long, the infection can spread to the

joints and tendons.

It is common to see cracks in hooves. These cracks run horizontal (around the claw) or vertical (from coronary band to the ground). Horizontal cracks are caused by systemic disease and are usually seen in dairy cattle who have been ill. Vertical cracks or “sand cracks” are caused by dry hooves. Hooves have a protective coating called periople that covers the hoof. When this layer is lost, the hoof dries out and damage occurs. The periople is lost in two ways – from the environment, such as sandy soil wearing it off or from damage to the coronary band. Sand cracks themselves are not a problem, but they can become passageways for bacteria to get into the hoof.

Foot rot is a common term

in the cattle business. Foot rot is caused by a bacteria that invades the soft tissue between the claws. Broken skin from trauma and wet conditions make it easy for the bacteria to get into the tissue. This condition is easy to treat if caught early – one dose of a penicillin or an oxytetracycline antibiotic.

If the first treatment does not work, it is not foot rot!

Poor hooves can cause more severe problems than an abscess. When the infection spreads, it can eat away at the bone and the joints. The good thing about cows is that they have two toes, called claws.

Claw amputation is a good way to salvage animals, whether it is a cow with calf at side or feedlot animals that aren’t quite market weight. The infected toe is removed, leaving the other toe to bear the weight. This

procedure is done in bulls as well, but usually only in a front limb. Since bulls need to bear more weight on the hind limbs while breeding, most of the time they break down very quickly with only one toe on a hind limb.

Most animals are culled, but some cows can raise more calves with no future problems.

Avoiding hoof problems can increase production, decrease veterinary treatment costs and keep your cows in your herd for more years. The main risk factors are genetic and environmental.

Genetic causes include poor conformation of the legs and hooves as well as corkscrew hooves. Corkscrew hooves are twisted claws, usually seen in the hind limbs.

This trait is genetic and can decrease the number of years a cow is in your herd as it predisposes them to lameness. Culling the offspring of these animals can improve the health of your herd in years to come as the condition is often passed down. Other factors include mud, wet conditions, nutrition, and trauma. There is only so much we can do about the rain, but bedding cattle in the winter and spring, keeping them away from equipment, and avoiding watering from dugouts can all help to keep them healthy. Regular hoof trims can also decrease the incidence of lameness in your herd. Cleaning corrals annually can decrease the mud and manure, especially important for wet springs.

Pre-breeding vaccination with a foot rot vaccination called Fusoguard can be very beneficial, especially for bulls. A lame bull can have a huge impact on next year’s calf crop.

Especially with the wet weather we are having, hoof care is very important in your herd. “No hoof, no horse” is just as true in our cattle as well so take some time to check your cattle for lameness. Quick detection and treatment always has a better outcome.

North Wind Wellness Centre seeks support Tom Summer Dawson Creek Mirror

The North Wind Wellness Centre is seeking support from the Peace River Regional District for a pilot program that would see the creation of a 40 unit addiction and recovery centre in Farmington.

North Wind Director Isaac Hernandez says 28 acres of 150 owned by the centre in Farmington would have to re-zoned from agricultural use before breaking ground on the facility.

“We conceived the idea of this project back in 2014, having a treatment centre that would provide all the continuum of care for addictions, and that includes prevention, detox, and aftercare,” said Hernandez.

The Pouce Coupe site owned by North Wind is not being used for the new facility, confirmed Hernandez, noting the property is up for sale after arson destroyed Peace Haven in 2019.

Along with rezoning, North Winds is also asking PRRD for their support in construction advisory committee to help guide the process of the development of the new facility.

PRRD Chair Brad Sperling says the district’s involvement is limited to the committee, with no requests for funding yet.

“At this time the district has no involvement with this facility.

They are looking for participants to sit on the committee,” wrote Sperling.

The facility is located in Electoral Area D. Construction is expected to start spring 2021, with targeted completion of the first 40 units in fall 2022. The model will be scaled to 120 units in following years.

North Wind currently offers a ten bed program at their facility near Dawson Creek.

Their 45-day program has offered Indigenous and culturally sensitive addiction treatment for nearly 25 years, after being founded in 1996.

Eight of the 40 beds proposed would be used for detox, 16 for treatment, and 16 for aftercare. Hernandez says the model is based on existing standards found elsewhere.

“It’s a concept that’s quite popular in Europe, as well as the US. The US alone has 750 programs like that,” said Hernandez, noting the facility would be a first for BC and Canada.

It’s expected that new facility would cost roughly 10 to 14 million dollars, with funding provided through the First Nations Health Authority. tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

Peace region court docket Sentences and fines from Fort St. John and Dawson Creek provincial courts Sept. 8 to 11, 2020: Dawson Creek • Dannie Lee Wolff (born 1976) was fined $500 and given a six-month criminal driving ban for operating a vehicle while disqualified, committed in February 2018 in Dawson Creek.

Wolff was fined an additional $2,000 and handed a one year criminal driving ban for failing to provide a sample, committed in March 2018 in Dawson Creek.

High School Rodeo: Pouce Coupe (Moore Ranch) results The third rodeo of the B.C. High School Rodeo fall season took place at the Moore Ranch near Pouce Coupe last weekend, September 12 and 13.

It was a North Region-only affair. Jesse Jones of Dawson Creek and Fallon Jones of Prince George won the senior all around titles, while Ethan Nelson of Chetwynd and Nevada Jones of Prince George won the junior all around titles.

The North Region will be back at the Moore Ranch this weekend, September 19 and 20, for its final rodeo before the winter break.

Ditch the Two-Timer Dear Annie: I met this guy, “Bill,” through work.

We hit it off. He’d told me he was single. Later, I found out through a mutual colleague that Bill had a girlfriend, “Julie,” a divorced lady with two kids, but he wouldn’t be able to marry her because his family wouldn’t approve their marriage. So, I confronted him. He stated that she was not his girlfriend and that our colleague made the whole story up. Bill and I started dating, and, after a while, I found out that he was still seeing this lady and hanging out with her. I confronted him again, and he stated that it’s not going anywhere with her, and she knows that, too. I do not believe that. I think, deep inside, she thinks she is dating a loyal guy and is waiting for him to propose any minute.

I realized that Bill is just using Julie to kill time to have someone to hang out with because he doesn’t want to be alone. But he doesn’t want to commit to either one of us. So, when she is not available, I am available, and vice versa. I feel sorry for her because she has no clue what is happening. She is wasting her time on someone who won’t commit to her. I know her name, her Facebook account, where she lives and lots more. I want to tell her the truth about Bill, but Bill will know that it was me who told her the truth. I’m scared because I don’t know what his reaction will be, and he knows where I live. Dear Annie: My husband and I are in our early 70s. He is not all that healthy: heart disease, diabetes and asthma. I am pretty healthy but a bit overweight.

We had to have our 18-year-old grandson move in with us one year ago.

The move was due to horrid family issues with his mom. (That could fill a whole other letter!)

The issue is that he really would like to make frequent trips back to his hometown, which is 50 miles away, to visit his siblings and friends. We’ve been pretty limiting in letting him go, due to the coronavirus.

We let him go for two weekends, and he just did not seem to get it. He was lax in his use of PPE when visiting. He doesn’t think it’s a big deal. I do not know what to do. We want him to keep up with his friends and siblings but are terrified he will bring home the virus.

He is very involved on FaceTime and social media, but it is just not the same as hanging out, we know. We realize how hard it has been to be so far away from his siblings and friends. But we do not want to die! I really do not know how to best handle this. — Nervous Grandparents Dear Nervous Grandparents: Not wanting to die is a perfectly reasonable wish. Stand your ground with your grandson: He can wear PPE and practice social distancing on these trips, or he can stay home. The choice is his. We’re all feeling isolated and tired of living this way. Retired Sgt. Terrance (Terry) Murray Latimer July 24, 1941-August 17, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terrance Murray Latimer (Terry) on August 17, 2020, after a long battle with failing health and cancer. He was a fighter right to the very end, as those who knew him had come to expect. He was pre-deceased by his son Jim (Sylvette) in 2017, his parents George and Ellen Latimer and his sister, and only sibling Pat Harder.

He leaves to mourn his wife Marlene of 57 years, his son David (Lea), his grandchildren Alexandre, Marie-Eve, Elena and Ian who were the light of his life, numerous nephews and nieces and one special nephew John Harder (Ottawa) with whom he had a special bond over the years.

The family will honour his strong request for cremation and no funeral service.

Terry was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on July 24, 1941. After high school graduation (Blairmore class of ‘59) he joined the R.C.M.P and began his training in Regina, Saskatchewan in May 1960. He had many stories of early mornings in Regina grooming the horses in -30 C Saskatchewan winters. His first posting was in Dawson Creek, BC where he met his wife to be, Marlene Beilman. They were married in May 1963 and shortly thereafter were transferred to Prince George, BC. In 1967 they were transferred to Burnaby and their son Jim was born in 1968. In 1970 he was transferred to Chilliwack, BC where his son David was born the same year, and where he was promoted to Corporal in 1972. In 1975 the family was transferred to Kelowna, BC and bought their first house in Westbank. In 1977 they were transferred again to Victoria, BC settling in Sidney, and he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1983 he was transferred to E Division headquarters in Vancouver and the family settled again in North Delta, where he retired in 1995 after 35 years of service. In 1998 Terry and Marlene moved to Vernon, BC to finally enjoy retirement in the company of lifelong friends and neighbours. He always said he had the best neighbours you could hope to know or have. Terry was very proud of his family and was active in his kids sports and hobbies while they were growing up. He had a keen interest in the lives of his grandchildren and he loved playing guitar and singing the old country songs. Terry has left a big hole in the hearts of his family, who knew they could always rely on him for anything at anytime.

The family want to send a very special thank you to interior Health, the Red Cross, all the care workers and nursing staff at Hospice House in Vernon, and especially Dr Pienaar who went above and beyond for him in his final years. In Iieu of flowers, the family would suggest Hospice House, Cancer Clinic, or a charity of your choice in his name.

If tears could build a stairway to heaven I would climb those stairs and bring you back with me.

Stephan Paul Lavandier Stephan Paul Lavandier, resident of Pouce Coupe, passed away at Edmonton, Alberta, August 30, 2020 at the age of 33 years. Stephan was the youngest child of Peter and Sharon Lavandier, joining the family on April 25th, 1987, a brother to Peter James and Victoria.

At an early age Stephan was a bright, inquisitive and artistic child. He had a keen sense of humour that made others laugh. When Stephan was 10 he traveled to Germany and Switzerland with his Oma. Stephan loved to be out at the cabin at One Island in his childhood years. He loved to catch frogs, minnows and larger fish.

Stephan graduated from South Peace Senior Secondary in 2005 and was accepted into VanArts Institute that fall. Stephan excelled at his work and was asked to stay on to teach students how to use the programs but he declined. He came back home and sent out his portfolio. In the meantime he went to work for different places, one of them being the building of the Dollarama store. He was such a good employee that the builder wanted him to continue on and help build the store in Ft. St. John. Stephan decided to enrol in the Northern Lights College carpentry class instead. While going to school Stephan also worked part-time at the Co-op grocery store. That was a grueling schedule he kept up until he graduated second year carpentry.

Before starting a career in carpentry Stephan and his brother PJ took a trip to Hawaii where he fell in love with the island and made plans to return again, maybe live there one day.

Stephan apprenticed under Frank Dyck Construction company and helped build his sister and brother-in-law’s house, his brother’s house and some other houses that Frank had on the go. Stephan enjoyed carpentry and the sense of accomplishment one feels when they finish a project. It was while he worked for Frank that Stephan began to notice a cough that would not go away.

He became too weak to keep up with the heavy demands of carpentry and went back to work at the Co-op. He was diagnosed with a very rare disease that was destroying his lungs. It was at this time that Stephan became more serious about his faith in Jesus. Stephan kept working but his hours became less and less as the disease progressed. Eventually he would be on 24/7 oxygen. Stephan was waiting for a double lung transplant when he passed into eternity.

Stephan was predeceased by his grandparents Gordon and Grace Rounds, Oma Erika Schmidt and Joseph Albert Lavandier.

He is lovingly survived by his parents Peter and Sharon, siblings PJ and Victoria (Terry) Dyck, nieces and nephew Taylor, Micah and Emma Dyck, uncles Tom (Gloria), Roy, Bryan (Mary) and David (Shellie) Rounds, Aunt Darlene (Doug) Rose and Aunt Bonnie Rounds. He also will be missed by his many cousins.

Due to ongoing COVID regulations, a funeral service was held privately. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in Stephan’s memory to the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation, 8440 112 St NW, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2B7 or the South Peace SPCA, 11418 3rd St, Dawson Creek, BC, V1G 4L5.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING FOR PROPOSED OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT & ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT TAKE NOTICE that a Public Hearing will be held at 9:00 a.m., in Council Chambers, City Hall, Dawson Creek, B.C. on Monday, October 5, 2020. Any member of the public, who feels they may be affected by the proposed changes to the City of Dawson Creek Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 4373, 2018, and Zoning Bylaw No. 4450, 2020 may comment at that time or may submit comments in writing to agenda@dawsoncreek.ca for inclusion on the Public Hearing agenda no later than noon on Friday, October 2, 2020.

The purpose of the OCP amendment is to amend the land use designation of portions of Chamberlain Park, from Parks, Natural Areas and Trails to Low Density Residential, to allow for the consolidation with neighbouring residential properties. In addition, a portion of 11617 Rolla Rd would have the land use designation amended from Light Industrial to Heavy Industrial to match the zoning. The OCP amendment would also remove the “Exemptions to Development Permits” section and instead refer to a separate “Development Permit Area Guidelines” document.

The zoning amendment would rezone portions of Chamberlain Park from P-1, Parks and Natural Areas to RS-1, Residential Single Detached. In addition, zoning will be removed from three road right of ways at 11617 Rolla Rd, 8th St and 1st St. Heavy Industrial zoning would be added to a portion of 11617 Rolla Rd. There are also numerous text amendments proposed: to allow for accessory structures in the RMH-1 zone, to clarify that human habitation is not permitted in a recreational vehicle, to add clarifying requirements for trade schools and add permitted uses to industrial zones. Furthermore, a site specific regulation would be added to allow for a reduced garage setback at 10701 Pinecrest Lane. The Official Zoning Map would also be updated to improve readability.
