Landry Women’s Institute report for March 2023

Women’s Institutes are changing with the times.

Surveys have shown that women now are preferring shorter business meetings followed by a time of sharing. Subjects for sharing could be a craft, a recipe, a good book, a health concern, a legislative concern, education in any form, any other area of interest in the community. This format allows members to visit while sharing.

At our February meeting, one member brought the materials needed to make to make playing card holders . Members then each chose to donate their holder to the Manor in Dawson Creek, as they think it more beneficial to make things that can be used by charities in the Dawson Creek area.

Landry WI are planning their annual community picnic, probably in June, at the old Landry School site. This has proved to be a popular event with neighbors getting to know each other and having pot luck dinner and old fashioned games for young and older folks too. Lots of fun for everyone.

Landry WI support women’s issues, children’s health, the economy and other local concerns. Members will attend the AGM for the Peace River District WI in April and plan to compete in the competitions. This year the meeting will be held in Cecil Lake north of the Peace River.

We can compete in 1. A fancy hat, 2. A fairy garden, 3. jewelry made from recycled material and up to 39 beads.

Roll call will be a purse or bag with personal items for men or women to be donated to a local charity. Landry members feel that competitions should be items suitable for donations to local charities. They should be creative and fun to do and useful for the community needs.

If you are interested in joining a group of women who like to get together and share ideas, while doing something useful in the community, find a Women’s Institute in your area.

For a list of branches in the Peace, phone Ruth Veiner at 250 782-5041 or Patsy Nagel at 250 784-0050.

Gun and Sportsman Show on

The Dawson Creek Sportsman’s Club is racked once again and taking aim at the Ovintiv Events Centre on April 1st and as they pull the trigger on the 43rd Annual Gun and Sportsman Show.

The two day event goes Saturday, April 1 from 9am to 5:30pm, and Sunday, April 2 from 9m to 3pm

The event is simply the largest gun show and sportsman show in the Peace Region with over 200 tables of firearms, knives, archery, ATVs and more.

PRRHD makes tax adjustment to support DC hospital replacement

With the Government of British Columbia and Northern Health working on next steps in the procurement process for replacement of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital – the PRRHD will implement a tax adjustment that will be capped at 27% of the forecasted final cost of the replacement project.

The design of the new state-of-the-art hospital is approximately 60 per cent complete and continuing to advance.

While negotiations with the previously selected builder in 2021 were not successful, and a new proponent is expected to be announced.

The final project cost and successful proponent are still being finalized and will be announced by Northern Health in a few months.

The provincial government, through Northern Health, and the Peace River Regional Hospital District (PRRHD) is funding the replacement project. The purpose of the Regional Hospital District is to cover the regional share (40 per cent) of capital costs of providing approved health care facilities and other grants.

To prepare for this request to support a potential increase in total project costs, the PRRHD will implemented the tax adjustment that will be capped at 27% of the forecasted final cost of the replacement project.

Reader comments: Parents call for more accountability after son’s mistaken prescription

A selection of reader comments on this story headlined above.

article indicates that they will be undergoing) to bring their procedure up to date, and ensure no further incidents occur. It does beg the question of how many pharmacies are operating incorrectly - something that the College of Pharmacists of B.C. would apparently be responsible for looking into. As I don’t know the industry, that’s my best guess. Poor parents - this must have been a terrifying ordeal for them.

Katelyn Desfosses:

Jaime Palmer:

Diane Horseman: Omg a child should never be on sleeping medications to begin with, stupid parent is what I think, and they need to re think what accountability means.

Daneka Hussey: I am quite sure that any pharmacist or pharmacy worker would consider this to be their worst nightmare, as I know several and they would be absolutely devastated to learn that they endangered a child.

That being said, they are human, and mistakes do happen in EVERY industry. It is one of the reasons why pharmacies have procedures, and why knowing about your own prescriptions is important, and knowing any side effects so if they differ you can seek medical attention is very important.

This pharmacy clearly needs to have some training (which the

I brought my month old foster daughter into emergency for a body cyst which needed antibiotics. I had to come back the next day for a second dose which they were going to administer through her pik line. When the nurse drew up the injection I noticed it was far more meds than what was drawn up the night before and, having worked in a medical clinic setting before, felt comfortable to say, “that looks like a lot more than the nurse gave us last time.” Thank God she actually went back to her paperwork to check (and didn’t just haughtily deliver those meds) and realized she had missed a decimal in baby’s weight and was about to administer 10x the antibiotic. Human error is a dangerous thing.

It is the patient’s/parents responsibility to throughly check over all medications before administering everytime. This isn’t the first time a person has been adversely effected. My old employment required staff to pick up and check meds weekly which 80% of the time there was some kind of mistake, be it dosage or change in medications that pharmacists were not made aware of or lack of communication as well as given other patients medications/blister packs by accident. Pharmaceutical industries/pharmacists making mistakes is a pretty common thing actually...more than we like to admit.

Haley Mcpherson:

These parents are fighting for some accountability so this does not happen to another child …. I think it’s commendable

Sandy Sutton:

Yes! Both doctors and pharmacists should be held liable when making mistakes and careless decisions and diagnoses

Provincial: BC announces multi-year boost to subsidize vet. ed.

The British Columbia government announced Thursday it is permanently doubling the number of subsidized seats for people who want to train to become veterinarians and practise in the province.

Selina Robinson, minister of post-secondary education and future skills, said at a news conference that the government will provide $21.8 million over three years to subsidize more students from B.C. to attend the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan.

“Vets play a critical role in supporting animal health care in our agricultural sector for B.C. farmers and for B.C. ranchers, and of course for pet owners,” Robinson said. “We recognize the need for veterinarians is growing.”

B.C. has been funding 20 seats at the university, but Robinson said the new money will subsidize 40 students from the province to meet the growing demand for veterinarians, especially among farmers and ranchers in the Fraser Valley and Northern B.C.

National: Trudeau stayed in $6K hotel suite for Queen’s funeral

The Prime Minister’s Office says Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, stayed in a $6,000 per night hotel suite while attending the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II.

The stay at the Corinthia London hotel became the subject of public debate last fall when media honed in on the details of the $400,000 trip, after obtaining documents through access-to-information requests.

But Trudeau’s office and Global Affairs Canada did not respond to questions last month about who stayed in the expensive river suite, which features a butler service.

Opposition MPs on the government operations committee asked for a copy of all receipts and invoices associated with the trip last month.

The room was booked on Sept. 9, one day after the Queen’s death, for Sept. 15 to 20.

World: Track stymies Russian path to Olympics due to war in Ukraine

Track and field leaders signaled Thursday that it will be nearly impossible for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in that sport at the Paris Olympics next year if the war in Ukraine continues.

The World Athletics Council kept its ban on Russian athletes in international events in place “for the foreseeable future,” a move that goes directly against the International Olympic Committee’s efforts to find a way for Russian athletes to compete as neutrals in upcoming events.

World Athletics will form a working group to determine under what conditions Russians

might return to international competition, but for now, there is no apparent pathway.

“The death and destruction we have seen in Ukraine over the past year, including the deaths of some 185 athletes, have only hardened my resolve on this matter,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who has been the most outspoken sports leader on the topic since Russia’s invasion.

The move came on the same day World Athletics finally lifted a seven-year suspension of Russia’s track federation for a doping scandal that dates back a decade.

Cocaine Bear: it’s Jaws in the forest, bears instead of sharks. With cocaine.

Rob Brown

Like Cowboys and Aliens, or Snakes on a Plane the concept is all in the title. the trick is the execution.

Almost every animal versus nature these days owes a debt to Jaws, and Grizzly, Sukunka, I mean Cocaine Bear is no different.

Easily Elizabeth Banks’ most complete picture in terms of director’s vision.

The movie is self effacing and fun - something every movie should aspire to when the producers realize they aren’t dealing with Oscar fodder.

The plot starts not too dissimilar to most zombie flicks - a chemical spills into nature.

In this case, it is cocaine being tossed from a dealers’ plane.

While the performances of the leads are great - I think there are too many characters to A keep track of, and B, few to sympathize with.

Jesse Ferguson, Ray Liotta, Keri Russell, and Alden Ehrenreich are all fantastic, some of the kid performances are a bit of a miss.

The plot, which is Jaws in the Forest with a cocaine fueled bear, really does not develop after the first 30 mimnute set up.

A great fun movie heading into spring.

“Based on true events...” is likely the truest part of this romp.

Coming this week to the Creek.

DC Speedskating Club looks for volunteers

One of the oldest speedskating clubs in Canada is looking for some help.

“We’re in need of some volunteer help,” say officials with the nonprofit.

According to the South Peace Historical Society, the Dawson Creek Speed Skating Club began in the fall of 1956. Pat Underhill arrived in Dawson Creek from Calgary, in September of 1955 and immediately began organization of the sport.

Dawson Creek has a unique position in the organization of speed skating in Western Canada. Red Deer, Alberta is believed to be the first club formed, with Dawson Creek the second and Edmonton third, however Dawson Creek was the founder of the BC Speed Skating Association, forming in 1956.

$125,000 to enhance Hudson’s Hope ATV campground

The District of Hudson’s Hope says it is receiving $125,000 from the BC South Peace Mackenzie Economic Diversification and Stabilization Trust to complete the third phase of its ATV campground development at Dinosaur Lake.

“The Hudson’s Hope community is grateful to the BC South Peace Mackenzie Economic Diversification and Stabilization Trust for the

financial support towards its completion of Phase III of the Dinosaur Lake ATV Campground,” Mayor Dave Heiberg said in a statement.

The Trust was announced last year to encourage and support economic development, diversification and stabilization in areas impacted by the recovery of the Southern Mountain Caribou herds.

Canfor Taylor pulp mill restart not expected until 2023

Canfor says it doesn’t expect to consider restarting its Taylor pulp mill until next spring.

Michelle Ward, a spokesperson for Canfor, says, based on ongoing discussions with the company’s transportation partners, the supply chain backlog is not expected to significantly improve before the end of the year.

She adds that winter is generally a more challenging time for rail transportation.

“We have therefore been preparing to winterize the facility in anticipation that it will likely be next spring before we could consider restarting Taylor Pulp,” she said in an email.

This follows Canfor’s statement on Monday that production capacity at most solid wood facilities across the province will be reduced for two weeks, starting September 26th.

The curtailment will be followed by the resumption of reduced operating schedules until the end of 2022.

“We are temporarily curtailing production in B.C. due to reduced market demand,” said Don Kayne, the president and CEO of Canfor.

“We will leverage our global operating platform to prioritize the requirements of our customers.”

Canfor expects the curtailment to lead to a

reduction of approximately 200 million board feet of production capacity.

Employees will have the opportunity to work during the downtime to complete maintenance projects and other site activities to “limit the impact,” said a release.

In August, in its second-quarter results for 2022, Canfor said the Taylor Pulp Mill curtailment will continue until “more normal” transportation levels resume.

The initial Taylor mill curtailment was announced in February 2022, followed by a sixweek extension in March.

Marion Ruberta Neste 1936 - 2023

On March 18, 2023, Marion Ruberta Neste, our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home. She was 86.

Marion was born in Dawson Creek, July 25, 1936, to Robert and Noreen Sekyer where she grew up in a very close and loving family of nine brothers and sisters.

On September 6, 1955, she married her lifetime sweetheart and soul mate Claire Neste, who was the love of her life. They had a wonderful sixty-two years together until Claire passed away on July 5, 2017.

They raised four children, Janet (Mike Fraser), Brad (Wanda Anderson), Barry (Sheila Crane) and Judi (Keelin Jackson). As the family grew, they welcomed four grandchildren, Kaillah (Chad Peterson), Brody (Kaela Hanna), Keenan, Mikaylee (Devlin Baldwin) and five great grandchildren Kylo and Kade Peterson, Peyton and Huxlee Fraser, and Hylee Baldwin.

Her unconditional love and unwavering support for her family was always present. Her “can do attitude” laced with ever present humor and ability to laugh at herself gave all present the chance to experience happiness and laughter with her. She created a warm and loving home that included continual family gatherings centered around her talent for preparing the greatest meals and baking in the world!

Her inner strength so perfectly and silently displayed, was very encouraging and infectious. No challenge in life, whether hers, or family, was ever met with a “surrender” attitude. She believed and displayed with every cell in her body - that it was only a matter of not giving up and believing in oneself - which one could overcome whatever adversities life presented. Her victory of beating cancer - not once, but three timeswas testament to this!

Her love and strength were present until the end. We will forever celebrate the incredible fortune that she was our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She taught us the importance of loving family and to live life with courage. We will miss her immensely. Her unconditional love and the incredible life she shared will forever be with us. Bye for now...until we meet again.

She preceded the passing of her sisters, Bernice Shearer, Vivian Halverson, Donna Price and brothers George, Sid and Bobby. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and siblings, Gary, Audrey Cowger and Loretta Olynyk.

The family wishes to thank the amazing caregivers that gave such wonderful attention and love to Mom in her final years. Thank you to Dr. Ulrike Meyers and the palliative care nurses who are such loving caring people. We greatly appreciate them. At Marion’s request, there will no service held. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society at https://cancer.ca/en/

Knights of Columbus Dawson Creek continues legacy of support.

Foundation executive director, Heather Kohler, welcomed Grand Knight Gregg R. Apolonio Jr. and Knight Richard LeGear of the Knights Of Columbus Notre Dame Church, Dawson Creek Council #4680 for the presentation of their latest gift on March 20, 2023.

“The Council is always delighted to support the Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation. Thank you very much for all the amazing works you are doing,” said Grand Knight Apolonio. The $2,999 will be used to purchase a much-needed laparoscope for the Dawson Creek and District Hospital.

Bing’s Furniture and Appliances donation adds comfort and a sense of home to Foundation office

On March 14, the Foundation office received the generous donation of new furnishings from Ed Mah and Bing’s Furniture and Appliances.

“We wanted to create a warm space for visitors to the Foundation, a place where you will feel comfortable chatting about your experiences and learning more about what the Foundation does to support the community we live in,” said Brette Madden, Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation Board President. “We are so grateful to Ed for his meaningful commitment to us - he is a shining example of what it means to have a philanthropic heart,” added Heather Kohler.

Please stop by the Foundation office in the Hospital during the week to meet Heather and find out more about making a gift to benefit the Hospital and Rotary Manor.
